Turkey Detains Teenager ‘For Insulting President On Facebook’

Turkish court has remanded in custody a 17-year-old construction worker on charges of “insulting” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Facebook.

It is the latest case in which youngsters have been hauled before the courts in Turkey on similar charges, as activists express growing alarm over the limits on freedom of expression under Erdogan.

The boy, identified as F E, was detained at his home in western Tekirdag province after someone called the police emergency line to complain about his Facebook posts.

The court in Tekirdag placed him in pre-trial detention. No other details were given on the content of the posts.

Critics say Erdogan has become increasingly authoritarian since becoming president in August 2014 after more than a decade as prime minister and the number of prosecutions for insulting him have risen.

Students, journalists and even a former Miss Turkey beauty queen have been targeted.

Last December, a 17-year-old was arrested in his classroom and held for several days on the same charge and given an 11-month suspended sentence.

In November, two of Turkey’s most prominent journalists — Cumhuriyet newspaper’s editor-in-chief Can Dundar and its Ankara bureau chief Erdem Gul – were arrested on spying charges in a case that has caused global concern.

His behaviour has been criticised by Manchester MP Graham Stringer, who called for an inquiry.

Mr Stringer said: ‘My major concern is he is using the internet and posting things and that would allow him to threaten or abuse people.

‘He shouldn’t have access to the internet in that way. At the very minimum he is boasting about the luxury of his situation which many people will find offensive.’

A prison service spokesman has however confirmed that Tevlin has been stripped of his privileges and could even face extra time added to his sentence.

Tell EFCC To Leave Tompolo Alone, Ex-militants Beg Buhari

Former Niger Delta militants, weekend, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to leave ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, alone and follow the rule of law in its dealings with him. The erstwhile agitators, who met under the auspices of the Transformed Niger Delta Ex-militants Forum, asserted that some persons, who were envious of Tompolo, wrote a petition against him to the EFCC, but advised that the commission in the discharge of its duties should respect the rule of law.

In a communiqué signed by its national president, Meshach Bebenimibo and others, they said, “We appeal to the President as a matter of urgency to instruct the EFCC to follow due process within 1999 Constitution as amended.” At the meeting held in Warri were Prince Bebenimibo, Bayelsa , Edo, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Ondo coordinators of the group, Peter Ayeebide, Austin Peremobowei, Korebor Minama, Anthony Youbai, Oluwah Michael and Oloye Tamarayende.

They said: “We want EFCC to leave Tompolo alone because the petitioners are acting out of jealousy to indict and incarcerate him, that is why they are lying to the whole world that Tompolo sold the land for the building of Nigerian Maritime University, NMU, Okerenkoko.”

According to the communiqué, “The petitioners know the truth and the truth is that Tompolo only sold the International Diving Institute buildings at Kurutie community and the place was sand filled before he built the school. Among the structures are lecture halls, multipurpose pavilion, administrative block, vice- chancellor’s lodge and hostels for male and female students.”

“The previous government brought valuers and did all necessary legal things and collected VAT money before paying him about 90 per cent as agreed.

“We also urge EFCC to have a rethink and defreeze Mieka and GlobalWest accounts.” The group, however, commended President Buhari for his interest in the region, particularly the inclusion of fund for the Amnesty programme in the 2016 Budget presented to the National Assembly, saying, “We really appreciate your kind gesture.”

The president moves in a motorcade of about 12 vehicles as counted by reporters recently. The senate president and the speaker’s convoys comprise of an average of 10 vehicles each.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan maintained not less that 23 cars in his motorcade. The highest number of vehicles in Buhari’s ministers’ convoys is four while the lowest number is two as observed.
On the eve of inaugurating his ministers last month, Buhari warned his ministers-designate to avoid large convoys, long protocol and retinue of aides.
The president gave this directive at the end of the two-day retreat he organised for the new ministers at the Presidentail Villa in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the ministers, Minister of Labour Dr Chris Ngige said the new government “will be running a lean economy because we are going to block areas of leakages. Retinue of aides, protocol staff and large convoys of cars are things that will not fly in this administration.”
Checks revealed that there are 12 cars in Buhari’s convoy. Our correspondents observed this at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on December 7 shortly after the president arrived from a function.
The president’s convoy at that time just arrived from the Shehu Musa Yar’adua International Conference Centre where he attended the public presentation of the book “From Opposition to Governing Party: Nigeria’s APC Merger Story” written by Minister of Science and Technology Ogbonnaya Onu.

Nigerian Army Reveals How 14 Female Suicide Bombers Were Unleashed On Maiduguri

Fourteen female suicide bombers descended on Borno State on Sunday, killing 25 people and injuring at least, 85, the Nigerian Army has said.

Yushau Abubakar, a Major-General, said during a press briefing in Mai?duguri, Monday, said the suicide bombers blowing themselves into bits as they attempted to invade the city.

“The 14 female suicide bombers, who were between the ages of 12 and 18, attempted to entered Maiduguri with the intent to cause mayhem, confusion, and panic,” said Mr. Abubakar, the Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, who represented the GOC, 7 Division, Major-General Lamidi Adeosun.

The attack, one among a recent wave of violent assaults by the Boko Haram terrorists, came days after the Nigerian government claimed it had met its December deadline of defeating the insurgents.

Mr. Abubakar said the girls, who planned to carry out coordinated suicide missions through Asmari, Damboa checkpoint, Ali Dawari, Molai Kura, Baderi, and Jumari villages, were intercepted by soldiers on patrol.

Three of the terrorists, according to the army officer, detonated their Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) while seven others were shot dead by soldiers.

One of the bombers was arrested while three others escaped.

“I believe this development has averted what would have been a major disaster if they had gained entrance into Maiduguri,” Mr. Abubakar said.

“One of the girls went into a nearby house and requested for water to perform ablution but instead prepared herself and came to a nearby mosque, killing herself and one other person while 13 others sustained injuries.”

Why Banks Stopped Naira ATM Cards Usage Abroad

Indications have emerged on why banks stopped the usage of naira debit and credit cards outside the country. According to industry sources, the decision was reached because banks could no longer provide foreign exchange to settle the foreign transactions.

It was gathered that in the past three months, over $300 million was spent paying for transactions that were done abroad using naira cards. This is aside the business travel allowance, personal travel allowance and payments for ‘eligible for foreign exchange’ products and services.

Some banks had last week informed their customers that with effect from Friday, January 1, 2016, they would no longer be able to access funds from their accounts using naira debit or credit cards outside the country.

ATM_International_ban
This had spiked reactions on social media as Nigerians, especially those living and schooling abroad condemned the move.

However, a banking industry source explained that “For the last two to three months we spent over $200 million to $300 million dollars paying for naira cards.

“People carry 10 cards, travel and withdraw cash and they use these dollars to buy gold, air freshener, candle and other things in five to 10 suit cases, what they forget is that the money they spend is our reserves.

“The result is that we are unable to pay the owners of the card, MasterCard and Visacard because there is not enough foreign exchange to allot to them and if you don’t pay them you have a country risk and credibility issues for the country” the source elaborated.

The unofficial value of the Nigerian currency, the naira, has plunged because of the fall in the oil price which is its main export, as the country has so far spent billions of dollars propping up the currency since it fixed the exchange rate in February and tightened trading rules to curb speculation.

The nation’s foreign exchange reserves had continued to decline falling to $29.34 billion as at December 22, 2015 according to figures on the website of the central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Meanwhile, the CBN has denied giving the directive on the stoppage of naira credit and debit cards use outside the country to banks. Although the ban has been said to be personal decisions of the banks, insider sources within the apex bank said the decision has received the support of the central bank which has taken several steps to reduce dollar outflow.

In June, the central bank had banned businesses from accessing hard currency to import about 40 items. The list included Indian incense, toothpicks, plastic and rubber products, soap and even private jets. The amount that Nigerians could spend on credit cards abroad had already been reduced by the banks.

Kogi Assembly Crisis: Lawal Remains Impeached – Factional Speaker

Mr Godwin Osiyi (PDP-Ogori-Magongo) factional Speaker of Kogi House of Assembly, on Monday reaffirmed the position of 17 members that the embattled speaker, Alhaji Momoh-Jimoh Lawal remains impeached. Addressing newsmen in Lokoja, Osiyi said that the impeachment, carried out on Dec. 10 during plenary, through the resolution of the 17-member-signatories still stood.

He said that contrary to insinuations from different quarters, the impeachment of Lawal (PDP-Okene II) was not influenced by anyone. According to him, the impeachment is premised on six grounds arising from general feeling of discontentment among members. “This includes gross incompetence and lack of capacity and confidence to preside over the proceedings of the 6th Assembly.

Probe Maku For Deceiving Nigerians About Release Of Chibok Girls, Al-Makura

Gov. Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa State has called for the probe of the failure of Mr Labaran Maku to rescue the Chibok girls as the supervising Minister of Defence in the last administration. This is contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity ,Alhaji Tukur Ahmed, on Sunday in Lafia .

Maku-Al-Makura

The statement said the probe was necessary in the interest of justice and fairness to the parents and guardians of the 200 female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno. According to the governor, the ongoing trial of the accused persons in the embezzlement of $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase should not exclude “those who allegedly collected money in the name of securing the release of Chibok girls but never did”.

Al-Makura noted that the investigation will go a long in revealing “how Maku, as Information Minister deceived Nigerians on the purported release of the Chibok girls”. “It was alleged that the former Minister also collected several millions of Naira under the guise that they were negotiating for the release of Chibok girls from Boko Haram”, he added.

He pointed out that Maku’s recent assurance that he will speak up on the $2.1bn arms deal is a ploy to draw public sympathy. The governor also challenged Maku to explain his role in the Ombatse and Baba Alakyo Saga over the killings of 86 security operatives while he was supervising the federal ministry of defence.

The statement commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to defeat Boko Haram, saying the insurgents are in disarray. It called on all Nigerians especially the residents of the North East to support “this patriotic and honest drive to bring lasting peace”.

Businesses Have Lost N1.46tn To Forex Shortage – LCCI

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry said private operators have lost about N1.46tn as a result of the foreign exchange constraints being experienced in the country over the last six months.

This is coming just as the Federal Inland Revenue Service has hinted the citizens will pay higher taxes from next year as a means of shoring up the nation’s revenue.

The LCCI, in its 2015 economic review, said its third quarter 2015 business environment survey showed that a forex restriction by the Central Bank of Nigeria was one of the costliest policies in Nigeria in recent years.

The Director-General, LCCI, Mr. Muda Yusuf, in a statement on Sunday, said, “The private operators
across several sectors (fast-moving consumer goods, steel, furniture, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing) lost about N1.46tn in stalled business activities resulting from paucity of forex over the last six months.”

Citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics, he noted that the country’s real Gross Domestic Product fell to 2.84 per cent in the third quarter of 2015, compared to 6.23 per cent in the same period in 2014.

Sectors such as manufacturing and the services slipped into recession after recording successive declines over the last three quarters in 2015, the LCCI said.

The group noted that the CBN had, in response to dwindling receipts from oil export, adopted several measures such as the closure of Retail Dutch Auction System window, restriction of cash payment into domiciliary accounts and prohibition of 41 items from accessing the interbank foreign exchange market.

It expressed concern about the state of the economy and the effects of the CBN’s policies on the operations of manufacturing firms and other private businesses.

It said, “The CBN’s administrative allocation of foreign exchange signposted much deeper challenges for investors and the economy. As of December 18, 2015, premium at the parallel market reached a record level of 35 per cent against the official exchange rate as the naira crashed further to 270/$ in the parallel market.

“The LCCI and the business community are very concerned about the current state of the economy and the consequences of the CBN’s approach to the management of foreign exchange market over the last few months. We have previously engaged the CBN and other authorities through several forums to draw attention to the implications of forex policies on businesses and the economy.”

In its macroeconomic outlook for 2016, the LCCI said it expected the GDP growth to rebound slowly to about 3.5 per cent, which would be driven by the increase in government expenditure.

The group also stressed “the right mix of fiscal and monetary policies to stimulate the economy and attract domestic and foreign investments.”

It also expected the exchange rate volatility to persist, fuelling high inflation of about 10-11 per cent.

“However, correction towards real effective exchange rate in the form of exchange rate adjustment is likely in Q1 2016. This will reduce the pressure on external reserves,” it stated.

The LCCI said with the declining trend of global oil price and its attendant impact on government revenue and foreign reserves, general business outlook would remain tense.

It said, “Implications on cost of and access to credit will be undesirable. Businesses, especially those with high forex exposure, will continue to face challenges of meeting foreign obligations to suppliers and partners. This will also impact contractual trust and integrity.

“Risk of default in financial obligations in both public and private sectors will be high as macro-economic conditions and cash flow remain tight.”

The group noted that the CBN through its Monetary Policy Committee on November 24, 2015 resolved to reduce the monetary policy rate from 13 per cent to 11 per cent (the lowest since 2009) and the cash requirement ratio from 25 per cent to 20 per cent, in a bid to stimulate the economy.

The LCCI said the cost and access to fund remained a major challenge for businesses, especially Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, adding that through the year, lending rate of commercial banks, including fees and charges, ranged between 22 per cent and 34 per cent, depending on the customer profile, tenor and collateral quality.

Meanwhile, the FIRS has urged Nigerians and others doing business in the country to be prepared to pay higher taxes next year.

The service spoke in Ibadan through one of its accountants, Anuoluwapo Ijaduola, at a lecture on the dwindling crude oil prices and its effect on taxation organised by Excel Assembly Foundation as part of its annual general meeting.

He said, “We’ve all been talking about diversifying our economy; yes, it is good, but it is not the only way out. It will not happen overnight. Corporate organisations, other companies and individuals should be ready to pay more in terms of taxes. If we want the country to move forward, we must be ready to pay our taxes, even more than what we have been doing before. Borrowing money can only be a short-term remedy.”

Jonathan’s Administration Triggered Soldiers Into Mutiny – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, in an interview he granted the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation has accused the past administration led by Goodluck Jonathan of provoking soldiers to go into mutiny for sending them to battlefields without arms and ammunition. The President said;

“We investigated and discovered how funds that were pencilled down for arms procurement were diverted and shared by government officials who served the last administration.

“The government at that time sent the soldiers to the battlefield without arms and ammunition to prosecute the war. That was what led some of them to mutiny. They were arrested and detained because of this.”

Speaking on the December deadline given to the Nigerian Army to win the war against Boko Haram, Buhari said;

“If people are going to be fair to us, they themselves know that the Army is winning the war. You can no longer find any huge number of Boko Haram members in Adamawa and Yobe; only may be, in about three local governments of Borno in the area around our borders with Chad Republic. They are no longer in position to threaten the country, so we have won,” he added.

He also spoke about the arrest and ongoing prosecution of arms scandal suspects. Buhari said the government would use documents that were already in its possession to prove to the courts that the suspects stole and their ill-gotten wealth would be confiscated and they would be jailed.

Zakzaky Ran Parrallel Govt For 20 Years, Read Shocking Allegations By Zaria Residents

Residents of Zaria, Kaduna State, yesterday accused leader of the Shiite Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky of running a parallel government, through which he brought untold hardship on them for over 20 years.

The residents called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency ban the Zakzaky-led Islamic movement from their communities.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the spokesperson of the affected Zaria communities, Idris Mohammed Baba, alleged that members of the Shiite sect had held people in Zaria and Sabon Gari local government areas of the state hostage with impunity while they ran the parallel government in the country.

Baba also alleged that the Shiites had in May 2015, declared 24 youths persona non grata for challenging their activities in Gyellesu community where Zakzaky resides.

Narrating their ordeals in the hands of the Shiite followers for over 20 years in Zaria, Baba said, “my experience with Shiite followers is disastrous and terrible. At a point, Shiite boys threatened to kill me. There is one notorious Shiite boy call Ali, he is the leader of El-Zakzaky’s notorious boys who accompany him anywhere he goes.”

The spokesperson said members of the community were happy with the military action against the Shiite’s movement in Zaria about a fortnight ago because “we have fresh air now blowing in our areas.”

“Before, we couldn’t grant an interview to the world about the Shiite activities but now, we are sleeping with our two eyes closed. As a community, we wrote letters to the governments about the ungodly activities of the Shiites but no single action was taken. We no longer report Shiites to the police because they will never honour police or security invitation.

“These Shiites are authority unto themselves; they don’t respect authority, security and so on. We are Muslims but we discovered that Shiites activities are contrary to Islam. They carry dangerous weapons openly molesting innocent people in our areas. Human rights bodies should also look into our pains by Shiite sect,” he stated.

Alhaji Saidu Garba, one of the Gyallesu elders who also addressed journalists, lamented that the once booming economic activities in the area had been crippled due to the activities of members of the Shiite sect in the area.

According to Garba, “after El-Zakzaky was released from detention in 1999, he came and settled in Gyallesu and since then, there is no peace in our area.

“We thank Allah for touching the heart of government and the military for liberating us from Shiites untold hardship.

“Shiites killed many of our people who challenged their activities, we buried them and we couldn’t talk to the world because of their threat. We were living like slaves in our own land where the Shiite leader, Sheikh El-Zakzaky came and met us. We residents of Gyallesu are calling on the Federal government to ban Shiite movement in our community and Kaduna state as a whole. Government should put a stop to the Shiite’s ungodly activities in our area,” he said.

Fayemi Defends FG’s N6.08trn Budget

The Minister of Solid Minerals and former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said the N6.08 trillion 2016 budgetary proposal presented before the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari was not too much considering the level of infrastructural decay and other sundry problems confronting the nation.

Fayemi said the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing which was appropriated a staggering sum of N433 billion, the largest share in the 2016 budget could still not boast that the amount would be more than enough to turn around the infrastructural facilities across the nation.

Fayemi, who made the statement at Isan Ekiti yesterday, during a thanksgiving ceremony organised by his former aides to mark his ministerial appointment, said there is no amount that is budgeted to develop a vast country like Nigeria that is too much.

Fayemi also lamented the neglect of the mineral potentials of the country since independence, saying the sector has the capacity to turn around the country’s economy, considering its local consumption by industries and export benefits.
“The former governor of Lagos State who superintends over the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing with about N433 billion budgetary provision cannot say the amount is enough to turn around the facilities of this country if you look at what was involved.

“Lagos-Ibadan expressway alone will gulp N250 billion while the remaining amount may go with the second Niger bridge, so no Minister can say the amount budgeted is more than enough”, he said.

Fayemi assured Nigerians that the budget is targeted at improving their lives, promising that it will be pursued with passion to realize its focus.

“The budget presented by President Buhari has a focus and the focus is to improve on the well being of all Nigerians and to improve on the infrastructural facilities across the nation .
“So, what we need now is to prove our mettle by being innovative and be creative. We need to work very hard to actualize the focus of this budget and this will only be measured by the level of impacts we are able to make on Nigerian masses”.

On the enormous mineral potentials of the country, Fayemi said the Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in cement production is enough to attest to the fact that the country is richly blessed.
“Nigeria is well endowed. Our self-sufficiency in limestone for production of cement, marble , ceramic and many others in terms of local consumption and export rate, one would know that Nigeria is endowed.

“In my local community in Isan Ekiti here, we have clay and kaolin and that was why we are regarded as pottery capital of Ekiti. But what have we achieved or done with this potential? And this endowment can be replicated a thousand folds across Nigeria.

“In Ijero Ekiti, there a feldspar , tantalite stone, Kaolin and many others. Even just look at the stones across the country , if it is just to cut and polish and use as tiles, one cannot imagine the huge economic gains and the employment it will generate, let alone the export earnings that are involved.
“We have been getting cheap money from oil and now the cheap money is gone. Now, we have to look inward and that was exactly what the budget is targeted to achieve”.

Maltreatment Of Patients: NHRC Vows To Prosecute Erring Hospitals

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has said it would henceforth prosecute hospitals and medical practitioners over any alleged unprofessional conduct. Consequently, the commission has implored Nigerians to report to it, cases of maltreatment or negligence by both private and public health care centres in the country.

Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof Ben Angwe, who made the call during the official launch of a research report on Human Rights and Maternal Mortality, said it was high time hospitals were made to pay for every act of negligence suffered by their patients. Angwe said he was shocked to discover that some women were evicted from their hospital bed to the corridor, “barely an hour after they gave birth.”

According to him, “that kind of thing is highly unacceptable in a country which not only recognises human rights of its citizens, but also respects them.“ He said the commission, in the course of its pilot study on women’s access to health care facilities in the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory, also found out that over 90 babies that died shortly after birth, were abandoned in a mortuary by their parents.

He said it was disheartening for the commission to discover that sundry inhumane treatment are meted out on patients, especially pregnant women, in both private and public hospitals. The report focused on the six area councils of the FCT, where a total of 96 hospitals/healthcare facilities, comprising 51 primary, 43 private and government secondary and two tertiary healthcare institutions were surveyed.

Angwe said: “We are using this opportunity to urge Nigerians to report any unprofessional treatment they suffered in the hands of medical practitioners to us. “If a medical practitioner is alleged to have committed an act of negligence, that person must be prosecuted. We need cooperation to bring quack doctors that are busy killing people to Justice.”

Among stakeholders at the unveiling of the report yesterday were wives of the Chief of Defence Staff, Mrs. Omobolanle Olonisakin and the Inspector-General of Police, Mrs. Agharase Arase. The duo who are Presidents of Defence and Police Officers Wives Association, DEPOWA, and Police Officers’ Wives Association, POWA, bemoaned plights of pregnant women in the country who they said are badly treated by health officials in the hospitals.

Describing maternal mortality as a major challenge to gender equality, the NHRC boss said the magnitude of its incidence in Nigeria typified a form of social injustice against women. “Medical personnel who has been confirmed to have done an act of negligence will have to pay compensation. If it involves institution, the institution will make the victim become rich.
“It is only in Nigeria that a practitioner will be responsible for the death of a person and nothing happens and the personnel will continue his practice without losing his license.

“The tragedy of maternal and child death lies in the fact that that most of these deaths can be prevented if only all pregnant women have access to adequate ante natal care, skilled attendant at child birth, emergency obstetric care when pregnancy related complications arise and appropriate post natal care for mother and babies” Angwe noted.

PPMC To Prosecute Pipeline Vandals, Commence Truck Tracking

The Managing Director of the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Mrs Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, has warned that any oil pipeline vandal caught, will be prosecuted with their assets destroyed to serve as deterrence.

Mrs Nnamdi-Ogbue, who spoke to reporters when some pipeline vandals were apprehended on Christmas day, said that the pipelines are the only effective way to distribute petroleum products nationwide and must be allowed to function.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, said that Nigeria cannot give in to the point where vandals and saboteurs become more powerful than the government.

“Oil pipelines in Nigeria serve two purposes: to distribute crude oil to the country’s three refineries for processing and to distribute refined petroleum products across the country for easy supply to consumers.

“Frequent pipeline vandalism has made these two functions ineffective for several years,” he said.

“I’m Not Plotting Against President Buhari” – Former Vice-President Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has asked his political opponents to desist from fabricating lies in a bid to cause a disagreement between him and President Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku, who alleged that his political enemies were sponsoring propaganda to cause distrust, said he was not plotting against the President.

He said this in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Sunday.

He dismissed an allegation that he had been hosting political meetings at Burj Al-Arab, Dubai, to frustrate Buhari.

Atiku said, “This is the work of rumour-mongers planning to cause distrust and distraction in Buhari’s government. They do not mean well for the APC administration. With the challenges of providing good governance for the country and creating job opportunities for Nigerians, including reducing the impact of poverty, President Buhari needs all the goodwill and support in these endeavours.”

According to the former vice-president, the success of Buhari’s administration has been his preoccupation.

He said that contrary to the rumours being peddled by his political opponents, he was currently in Dubai with his family for physiotherapy on his injured knee.

He said it was unfortunate that at a time that energy should be channelled into helping the President actualise his change agenda, some were busy spreading deliberate falsehood to cause distraction.

He warned that his private affairs should not be politicised by anybody to achieve sinister objectives.

Atiku said he was entitled to enjoy his private life, including the right to attend to his health without being harassed and lied against by political opponents.

The statement read, “This is yet another plot by the enemies of our country and democracy to divide, divert attention and distract the APC in its avowed commitment to secure the country, provide jobs for the unemployed youths, build the needed critical infrastructure, enthrone a regime of probity and accountability and pull the country out of the economic woods it has been consigned to by locust years of mismanagement.

“Whether at home or abroad, the Turaki is preoccupied with his unassailable support to President Buhari and his administration, especially at this critical time, as he works assiduously to turn the fortunes of our dear country around and make Nigeria work for the greater good of all.

“Rumour-mongers are toxic to the progress of the APC and the country at large. The campaigns are gone, and therefore, all energies should be constructively devoted to the success of the Buhari administration.”

Rebuilding PDP Not Easy, Says Metuh

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said it is not easy to rebuild the party.

It also said that since the party lost power for the first time since 1999, it was meeting a stiff opposition within the party on how to rebuild it.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday.

Metuh, nevertheless, said he was confident that the forces working against the rebuilding of the party within its fold and outside would fail.

He said, “We have been rebuilding, but it is not easy. We are rebuilding, but there are different forces, and contending interests (working against it). It is not easy.

“On one hand, we are dealing with a ruthless ruling party, and we also have some divisive elements in our party who are genuinely accepting some influence in the administration of the party.

“Knowingly or unknowingly, they are embarking on distractions and distractions that would rather be in the interest of the ruling party than our growth.”

He said that since the party lost the general elections, it had tried to remain focus and play the role of an opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

As the spokesperson for the opposition party, Metuh regretted that some members of his party wanted him to be abusing the President (Muhammadu Buhari) with the hope that that action would boost the image of the PDP.

He said the APC did not win the elections by merely abusing former President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that some actions of the members of the PDP then helped in adding to the fortune of the APC.

He said, “But since we lost the election, we have tried to remain focus and retain the support of a very large number of our members to remain focus in opposing this government.

“Some of our members misconstrue an opposition party to be a party that insults people because that was what the APC was doing.

“People want us to insult the President and the ruling party to remain in opposition. Because we are not doing that, our people are not comfortable with that.

“They believe that we are too soft and they believe that we are too academic. They want us to be insulting the people. It was not by insulting the former President that gave the APC victory.

“We fuelled partisan support for the APC in some part of the country. ”

On the rumour that members of the outgoing National Working Committee of the party had shared offices ahead of the March 19 national conventions, Metuh said the allegation was unfounded.

Nigeria’s Budget Without Oil Realisable – Fayemi

The Minister of Solid Minerals and a former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has said the N6.08tn 2016 budget proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari is realisable.

The minister also said the budget was not bogus despite the dwindling revenues from crude oil.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, while criticising the budget, had said that, “It is only in a confused and clueless economy that government will plan to spend more when revenue has reduced by more than 50 per cent.”

But speaking in Isan Ekiti on Sunday during a thanksgiving ceremony marking his ministerial appointment, Fayemi said there was no amount budgeted to develop a vast country like Nigeria that was too much.

He lamented the neglect of the solid minerals sector since independence, saying the sector had the capacity to turn around the country’s economy, considering its local consumption by industries and export benefits.

He argued that the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing that received a staggering sum of N433bn largest share in the 2016 budget could still not boast that the amount would be more than enough to turn around the infrastructural facilities across the nation.

He said, “The former governor of Lagos State who superintends over the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing with about N433bn budgetary provision cannot say the amount is enough to turn around the facilities of this country if you look at what was involved.

“The Lagos-Ibadan expressway alone will gulp a sum of N250bn while the remaining amount may go with the second Niger bridge, so no minister can say the amount budgeted is more than enough.”

Fayemi assured Nigerians that the budget was targeted at improving their lives, promising that it would be pursued with passion to realise its goals.

“The budget presented by President Buhari has a focus and the focus is to improve on the well-being of Nigerians and to improve on the infrastructural facilities across the nation.

“So, what we need now is to prove our mettle by being innovative and be creative. We need to work very hard to actualise the focus of this budget and this will only be measured by the level of impact we are able to make on the Nigerian masses.”

Fayemi maintained that Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in cement production was enough to prove that the country was richly blessed.

How I Met With Don Jazzy And Became A ‘Mavin’ – Di’ja

Beautiful Mavin artist music artist Di’ja has been in the news for a while now following her controversial traditional wedding ceremony held in Kaduna state.

In an interview with City People Magazine, Di’ja opened up on her relationship with Mavin Records boss Don jazzy, described her kind of music and how her parents embraced her music.
When asked about how her relationship with Don Jazzy, Di’ja disclosed that:

Meeting Don Jazzy, I felt like I was reborn. I met him through my manager. He told we were going to
see a producer, I didn’t know where we were going so we ended up in Don Jazzy’s house. I didn’t even know where I was. I ended up meeting Baby Fresh, Altims and a few others. They started listening to songs that I had done before and I had this nervousness in me. Not long after, I saw a shadow behind me and when I turned around to see who it was at the door, it was Don Jazzy and I almost fainted, I just told myself to stay composed. It even got worse when Don Jazzy started listening to my songs, I just got so nervous. He told us he would get back to us and the next day he pulled a call through and that was it.

On when she finally signed on to Mavin Records, Di’ja said: “We started recording and we recorded quite a few tracks. At that time nobody was bothered about a contract or papers, we just wanted to work. From there I met Reekado and then Korede Bello. We didn’t even know there was a plan; we were just happy working and enjoying each other’s company. We recorded for about 8 to 9 months at that time before Don Jazzy even considered giving us a contract.
Speaking on how she chooses her kind of music, Di’ja disclosed that she enjoys been herself anytime she is about writing her song and it can take her up to five years to finish song.
She said: “I didn’t, like I said I just became myself. I can write a song for 5 years. I still have songs that I haven’t finished writing since 2008. This is because there’s just this thing about been yourself. Write your songs as they come from your heart. I like been crazy and I experiment my craziness while recording.”
Mavin artist Di'ja
“Sometimes I would be like Altims or BabyFresh please commot that thing and they would be like they love it and I should do it again. Sometimes I would beg them to take it off and when Don Jazzy walks in I would be like a little disturbed and he would encourage me to be crazy, be free and be myself, he would say be stupid, it is actually trying to be stupid you find your smartest moment. Because it is during that moment of been stupid you would realize something that would pay off. I think Music comes with a form of madness. You just have to be free, crazy, stupid and yourself. Don’t try to please everyone, please yourself even if it takes you to be crazy.”

Bishop TD Jakes was in church yesterday in this ripped jeans.

Only for a ‘concerned’ fan to lash out at him, after Bishop posted the photos on Instagram, that he is supposed to be leading by example and not wearing ripped jeans to the altar as it is worldly. Do you see anything wrong with Bishop Jakes’ attire? He replied the fan though. See it below:

States May Get Broke Again– Masari

At the backdrop of expected significant drop in revenue accruable to the three tires of government from the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, state governments may need fresh bailout arrangements as none of them have indicated plans to rejig budgets in line with the merging fiscal realities.

To underscore this development Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari said last week that some state governments in the country may find it difficult to pay workers salaries in the next three to six months as a result of the current economic hardship occasioned by falling oil prices.

The governor said this at the foundation laying ceremony for construction of three blocks of 12 classrooms, office block and a computer centre at Kadandani Community Secondary School in Rimi Local Government Area of the state by Continental Computers. “In three to six months time, some states will find it difficult to pay salaries due to fall in the price of oil in the market,” he stated in Hausa language.

Some of the state governments are already complaining that the recently settled issue of minimum wage may be revisited following the weakening of the revenue base. Some states are indicating that they would not review the minimum wage downward but they may be forced to retrench to reduce recurrent expenditure within available resources, otherwise the workers would be owed indefinitely.

Sokoto State Govt To Sustain Non-Discriminatory Fees In Schools – Tambuwal

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state on Sunday pledged to sustain the non-discriminatory policy on payment of school fees introduced by his predecessor, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko.

Tambuwal said this in Sokoto when he hosted the Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, who led members of the church on a Christmas courtesy visit.

He said: “As part of measures to boost communal harmony, my administration will sustain the policy of non-discriminatory fees paid by all students in public schools started by the last administration.”

The equally invited all Nigerians willing to contribute to the development of education to come to the state and exhibit their talents.

He enjoined Christians to also sustain the centuries old peaceful and harmonious co-existence with their neighbours in the state.

Okoh had earlier said that Nigeria can learn a lot from Sokoto’s peaceful disposition for rapid development of the country.

He said: “Even though there a one or two issues with conflicts in Sokoto in the past, that has not affected the overall peaceful disposition of the state.”

The cleric commended the Sokoto Government for its efforts in promoting harmony among diverse religious and ethnic groups in the state.

While urging all Nigerians to take the issue of protection of environment seriously, Okoh said the dangers posed by desertification is real and should be accorded the attention it deserves.

Monday Morning Explosion Kills Many In Maiduguri Mosque

At least 20 persons were killed in a fresh explosion in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Monday morning, as residents gathered around a mosque.

The explosion sounded as residents speculated that a fleeing Boko Haram bomber abandoned an improvised explosive device in the area during Sunday night’s attack on the city.

A police officer, said the victims had gathered to investigate if a bomb was truly abandoned in the mosque.

“I have never seen such foolishness when people would go peeping into a mosque to find out if truly there was an explosive deposited in a place. But sadly, the bomb went off and over 20 persons were killed and many injured.”

But the account of Malam Suleiman, a primary school teacher in the area, was slightly different.
“The people normally sit down around the mosque in the morning,” he said. ”The place is like a meeting point where neighbours converge to relax.”

“After the morning prayers they just sat down outside the mosque as usual and then the bomb went off. It was not suicide bombing like that of last night. It may have been planted.

“Many people died but I can’t give actual figure of the casualties”.

Army Nabs 7 Bomb Experts In Kaduna, Repel Boko Haram Attack In Borno

Soldiers of the Nigerian Army yesterday arrested seven Boko Haram bomb specialists in Kaduna, while plotting to attack the state with several improvised explosive devices (IEDs), Army officials said.

The officials said given the number of the bombs recovered from the arrested bombers, Kaduna State should count itself lucky that a major catastrophe that might have affected lives of innocent persons have been averted.

Spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, said the suspects were nabbed after a long period of investigation and intelligence sharing.

He said, “Another catastrophe was averted in Kaduna State and other contiguous areas when troops of the Nigerian Army arrested 7 suspected Boko Haram terrorists with bomb and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) specialists.

“The terrorists were arrested in Kaduna after painstaking surveillance and proactive intelligence operations over a period of time.

“From all indications, the suspects were in Kaduna to conduct suicide bombings, kill and maim innocent citizens in the state and other surrounding areas during the festive period. Recall that recently in Maiduguri, some of them were arrested while trying to detonate IEDs carried in food containers in public places.”

Troops Repel Attack in Borno

Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, last night came under attack by Boko Haram gunmen who were repelled by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, even as two female suicide bombers succeeded in detonating their explosives and killing many in another part of the city.

The attack, which many described as a desperate show of relevance by the insurgents, was coming days after the Nigerian government declared the insurgents defeated.

Sources in Maiduguri informed LEADERSHIP that the attackers attempted to invade the city through a village called Aladuwari, about 2km South of Maiduguri, but were effectively repelled by soldiers of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army.

But it seemed the Aladuwari attack was to create some kind of detour by the insurgents to enable two female suicide bombers invade the city from another flank.

The two female suicide bombers invaded the city and detonated their explosives at a crowded mini-commercial area.

Muhammed Abubakar, a vigilante operative who lives in Suleimanti area of Maiduguri, said the bombers detonated their explosives near FOMWAN Primary School located between Suleimanti and Jiddari Polo.

He said, “There were two explosions, one coming immediately after the other. Those who saw them said there were two women who began to scream as the bombs were about to go off”.

Spokesman of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Abbas Gava, had earlier informed LEADERSHIP that the gunmen were making an attempt to invade Maiduguri but were intercepted at Aladuwari village where they exchanged fire with soldiers.

Another female suicide bomber kill family of 15 in Maiduguri

In a related development, three wives of a Village Head and their 10 children were yesterday feared killed as a female suicide bomber attacked their residence in Maiduguri, witnesses said.

The woman, who took advantaged of the chaotic situation when soldiers were busy engaging Boko Haram fighters in a shoot-out during a repelled attack on the city, pretended as if Boko Haram was chasing her and ran into the compound of a village head, Bulama Isa.

A resident who witnessed the event , Ahmed Baba, said, “She ran into Bulama Isa’s compound, shouting ‘Boko Haram, Boko Haram.

“When the families of Isa came out of their rooms to meet the woman in the centre of their compound, the woman simply detonated the bomb hidden under her garment, killing the village head’s three wives and 10 children”.

Bulama Isa, who did not arrive at his residence at the time of the attack, managed to survive another suicide attack at the entrance of his home.

Sources said another female suicide bomber, who was lurking in the dark as the grief struck head of the family walked into his compound, jumped out and detonated herself. But the village head was lucky again. He was able to escape with minor injury, but the blast succeeded in killing a woman with her baby.

‘I Can’t Marry A Fair Complexioned Girl Unless I See Her Childhood Photo’ – M.I

MI has opened up on his phobia’s ,confessing to Potpourri (Vanguard) in an interview that he lives in mortal fear of fair girls because he believes most of them are not natural. He said before he would take one for a wife he would need to see a picture of her as a child just to make sure she is naturally fair and not artificial. According to him, most girls have bleached their skins for so long that it almost looks natural. He said:

Talking about the physical side of what I want in a woman, I want my children to be tall, so, she must be tall because I am not tall. Then I don’t care about complexion. If she
is fair, that would be a problem because I would have to see  her childhood picture to confirm if she’s natural or artificial. Most ladies that claim to be fair or appear to be fair these days get unnatural means to achieve it. So, getting her childhood picture would tell me all I need to know concerning her true complexion”, he declares

He however conceded that he would take in any girl claiming to have got pregnant for him if he has the proof that they have had sexual relations before.

“Yes, if I have a proof that we have been together and done it because I believe that the best way for a child to be raised is for  both parents to be around. Look at somebody like 2Face he has shown love to all his kids and they are very close. Not only that, he has also maintained a good relationship with the mothers. When such situations arise, the best you can do is to make the most of it by staying true to yourself and be fair to all concerned”

$2.1bn Arms Deal: Al-Makura Calls For Maku’s Probe As Supervising Minister Of Defence

Ololade Ajekigbe: Mourinho And The Wages Of Pride

A fall reminiscent of “Humpty Dumpty,” the character in the old English nursery rhyme. An ignominious exit. That was the sad and abrupt end of the erstwhile enviable love affair between maverick Portuguese football manager, Jose Mourinho and West London football club, Chelsea. For many Chelsea fans and football enthusiasts, the news that the Mr Controversial of the beautiful game had been given the boot came as a bit of shock regardless of the clear handwriting on the wall. It was still hard to believe, even though virtually everyone knew he had had it coming for a couple of months now. Simply because it was Jose Mourinho! Arguably the best coach in the world, and unarguably one of the top three coaches in world football. Alas, it was true. The footballing world’s non-conformist had been fired for the second time by the same club, making history as the first manager to suffer such a misfortune.

Why I do not care too much for Chelsea as a club, I have always been intrigued by the personality of the most successful manager in its 110-year history. The reason is simple- controversial people are always interesting. While controversial and equally successful people are doubly interesting. The 52-year old effortlessly boasts of the two characteristics, hence the unsurprising cult-like obsession with him among fans and foes alike. I am not happy about Mourinho’s sacking. I had hoped that somewhere along the line, he would get his groove (and by extension his team’s groove) back, and that they would at least find themselves within a fighting chance of making top four. For its entertainment value, I had also hoped that his running feud with Arsenal’s coach Arsene Wenger would continue to spice up our viewing pleasure. But again, that was not meant to be.

Following the “Special One’s” sacking, there have been rumours about the Chelsea players ganging up to ensure that a consistent poor run of form and results would degenerate into the inevitable ouster of their manager. It’s not so difficult to align with this school of thought considering the fact that Mourinho himself confessed to feeling betrayed by his players after their last loss to high flying Leceister City. The duo of Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been particularly fingered as the ones who spearheaded the locker room revolt against the Portuguese. Now, let’s assume this allegation is true, it is imperative to ask what may have triggered the “backstabbing” of a manager who was once loved by players and fans alike. As unfortunate as the outcome of events have been at Stamford bridge, I am inclined to believe that Mourinho’s pride which saw him at loggerheads with several people (ranging from Eva Caneiro to Arsene Wenger to a couple of referees and match officials) finally culminated in his unceremonious departure from the club that has been tantamount to family to him.

There’s a reason why the popular maxim “Pride goes before a fall” rings true till this day. For all his celebrated genius and knack for winning trophies, the man, Mourinho had one problem which is almost always bound to bring down anyone in a matter of time. Pride. He had a hard time controlling his tongue, and while it may be convenient to lay the blame of his misfortune at the feet of a few of his players or even the entire Chelsea team, it would be sheer ignorance or blind loyalty to assert that the manager could be absolved of any fault in the matter. It didn’t matter who he perceived to have wronged him, his caustic tongue was always ready to brutalize such a one without caring about the consequences.

Perhaps his biggest blunder was tagging Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger a specialist in failure; alluding to the long spell of trophyless seasons the latter has had to endure. He mocked Wenger. He fired Eva Caneiro, (the team doctor who did no wrong) without remorse. He made scathing remarks about a colleague’s (Rafa Benitez’s) wife without batting an eyelid. Let alone his frequent run-ins with match officials and the English FA. At different times, he’s been known to throw verbal jibes and even engage in mild brawls with rival coaches in the name of playing mind games. Mourinho became as likeable as a bad case of haemorrhoids in many quarters. He couldn’t keep riding his luck forever. It was always going to catch up with him at some point.

We all know that one person whom we always fear would become a tin god of sorts if they were ever fortunate to assume celebrity status. Personally, I have always believed that the reason why some people never attain a certain level of fame is because God already foresaw that they would become arrogant, rude and a law unto themselves. Not everyone can handle fame and the attendant attention that comes with it. Maybe if we tried to bear in mind that regardless of how much we seem to have achieved or how good we are at what we do, there’s always someone out there who has achieved much more and can do a far better job that we can, then we would be less likely to misbehave. It’s a way of thinking that will not permit us to think too highly of ourselves.

There’s always someone out there who’s more beautiful, more handsome, more successful and wealthier. What’s more, if those who are far better than us in almost all ramifications can manage to remain humble, then we,with our modest achievements really do not have an excuse to believe that we are the best thing to happen to humanity since Agege bread. Pep Guardiola won 14 trophies in the first four years of his managerial career, and is considered to be one of the best managers in the world. Yet, he has remained as self-effacing as ever. One wonders if Mourinho wouldn’t have achieved more success if he possessed some measure of humility.

Taking some time off coaching to reflect on his career so far with a view to becoming a better individual and manager might be the best thing for the Portuguese now. There’s no doubt that he is still very relevant in the round leather game, and will not stay unemployed for long if he so wishes. However, jumping into another job without taking time out to admit the mistakes of the past and chart a better course for the future will only mean that he has yet to learn his lesson, and it may only be a matter of time before he finds himself in a similar situation to the way he left Real Madrid and Chelsea. Making a mark but never really leaving a worthy legacy behind.

We Will Jail Arms Fund Thieves – PMB

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to ensure that all those involved in the arms procurement graft are duly prosecuted and jailed according to the laws of the jail.

Speaking with the BBC Hausa Service, President Buhari said it is one of the ways he intends to fund the 2016 budget, which is the biggest in the nation’s history and anchored on non-oil revenue.

“That is why those who stole monies meant for arms procurement and shared it among themselves are being arrested and are being shown documents so that they would be asked to refund the money or face prosecution; we would use those documents to prove what they stole, collect all the assets acquired from the proceeds and then jail them,” he stated.

He explained that the Customs, Ports and direct taxes on goods and services can fund the N6.08trn budget besides his determination to block leakages in how oil revenue is managed.

“We have also shown the changes we have made in the Customs; for instance, how much we are making from the Customs service; how much from petroleum, that is NNPC; how much we are making from the ports. There have been lots of leakages in these sectors. If we block these leakages, we would make much more money to run the country despite the fall in the price of oil.”

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) at the weekend predicted that crude oil prices may slump to as low as $20 per barrel in 2016.

According to report by the IMF Executive Board, the price of crude oil could drop to between $5 and $15 in 2016.

But while presenting the 2016 budget to the National Assembly, Buhari had said that “oil-related revenues are expected to contribute N820 billion while non-oil revenue, comprising Company Income Tax (CIT), Value Added Tax (VAT), Customs and Excise duties, and Federation Account levies will contribute N1.45 trillion.

“Finally, by enforcing strict compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 and public expenditure reforms in all MDAs, we have projected up to N1.51 trillion from independent revenues.”

The budget, the presidency said, is also relying heavily on the recovery of looted public funds and savings from the newly introduced Efficiency Units in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) by the new minister of finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

Buhari told BBC he was optimistic about the “Budget of Change” submitted to the National Assembly, which is the nation’s biggest budget estimate in history and at a time the price of oil had drastically gone down in world market, saying it was at the country needed now.

“As a government, we inherited N1.5 trillion domestic debts, and when foreign debt is added, we have about N2.2 trillion. Everybody knows Nigeria is not a poor country. We are rich, and we have human resources; the problem had been that leadership did not take curbing corrupt tendencies seriously,” he said.

The minister noted that blocking the leakages will be achieved because the leaders of these agencies had been bought into his administration’s change mantra.

“It is generally believed that a fish begins to rot from the head; once the head is rotten, the whole body is also rotten. We have tried to remove all the heads of the organisations, and most of the lieutenants have been changed,” he said.

“A lot is happening in this government that people do not appear to understand: many permanent secretaries of ministries have been changed; we used to have 42 ministers, now we have 36 because the constitution requires that each state of the federation must have a minister; we used to have 42 ministries, now we have 24.”

President Buhari further explained that his government allocated 30 per cent of the budget to capital projects because during the campaigns, he promised Nigerians he would tackle three major issues to pull the economy out of the doldrums: unemployment, security and corruption.

“Remember the campaigns, we said Nigeria is facing three major things and nobody disputed that assertion. Firstly, there was widespread insecurity – war in the north east while the country’s oil was being stolen at random in the south.

“Secondly; there was massive unemployment – 62 per cent of the nation’s population are youths from the age of 35 years downward, most of them are unemployed, including those who went to school and those who did not; that is a serious problem. Therefore, it has become necessary to restore peace and create employment. That is why we are returning to agriculture and mineral resources.

“Thirdly, bribery and corruption was basically suffocating the country. If we don’t kill these monsters, this country would go down.”

He stated that the programme initiated to assist the poor and vulnerable Nigerians by paying them N5,000 monthly would commence as soon as the budget is passed. He, however, added a caveat.

“It is not possible for everyone needing it to get it, but the federal government has said it would collaborate with the states and local governments. At the local government level, almost everyone knows each other.

“It would be easy to identify those to give who would go into trading, and how to get it back. It would be like a cooperative and we all know how it operates. Also, state governments would identify those who have capacity to employ more people and all we need to do is to empower them. Our people already know how to go about implementing these modalities to create employment for the citizens,” he said.

On the promise that he would end Boko Haram insurgency by December, the President said the war had raged on because of the corruption inherent in the prosecution of the fight since 2009.

“I want people to understand that after I settled down and got good grasp of what the country was going through, we removed all the service chiefs and appointed new ones. We also undertook an investigation and found out how the monies meant for arms procurement were diverted and shared by officials in the last administration. They sent the boys to the warfront without arms and ammunition, leading some of them to mutiny after which they were arrested and detained.”

Buhari said that, by his own assessment, the military had largely achieved the December target to end the war.

“We have been able to raise money and fund the war. Go and ask the people of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa how many of their local governments were under the control of insurgents and how many are currently still under the insurgents.

“Maybe we would not win the war completely by the end of the month, but the insurgents have now resorted to putting on explosive vests on young children, mostly girls aged 15 and below and then sending them to markets, mosques and churches to detonate. Boko Haram themselves know that the era of them taking over communities and local governments are over.

“If people would be fair to us, they would know that the Nigerian Army has basically met the deadline and are winning the war. You cannot find any significant number of Boko Haram members in Adamawa, and Yobe; only may be in about three local governments of Borno, in the area around our borders with Chad Republic. They are not in a position to threaten Nigeria now.

EX-AIG Urges FG To Tackle Injustice, Ignorance

A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Alhaji Bashir Albasu, has called on the Federal Government to address growing level of injustice, ignorance, poverty and corruption at the grassroots.

Albasu made the appeal an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of 2nd Edition of the 2015 Nigeria Security Exhibition and Conference (NISEC) in Abuja on Sunday.

According to him, terrorism is fuel by poverty, ignorance, poverty, corruption and injustice in the country, hence the need for the government to address the situation to restore peace in the country.

Albasu said that in addition to what the federal government was doing to fight insurgency, government should go to the grassroots to make sure that it prevent injustice and other factors that fuel terrorism.

“These are what fuel terrorism, going to Sambisa Forest to completely wipe out the terrorists is a very good and excellent effort.

But what do you do with what breed terrorism because if you wipe out the Boko Haram terrorists today without addressing the root causes of it the situation might resurface.

I remember 30 years ago, when President Shehu Shagari was in power, we had Maitatsine uprising in Kano which led to the death of over 10,000 innocent citizens.

The Military was used to subdue the Maitatsine uprising and peace was restored in Kano.

Similarly, in Maiduguri before the present security challenge there was another one but I have forgotten the name they were calling themselves, it was also knocked down by the Military.

And now we are fighting the Boko Haram. This shows that what we are doing is to allow the tree to grow and then cut the top of the tree and the branches.

That means the root is still intact in the ground and the tree will still grow again,” Albasu said.

The retired AIG, who is also the District Head of Albasu in Kano state, stressed the need for government to be proactive in tackling poverty and social injustice at the grassroots as a panacea to insecurity.

If we can be able to address these problems from the grassroots then we don’t have any business with terrorism because it will not grow,” he said.

He also advised government to provide basic social amenities to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to prevent them from becoming ready made reservoir for recruitment into terrorism.

“I was listening to the BBC Hausa service few days ago and some IDPs were interviewed in which they complained that there is no enough food for them to eat. They also complained about lack of hygienic condition in the camp and that there is no enough shelter for them to sleep.

If we allow this situation to continue some IDPs will be sneaking in and out of the camp, and if they have no jobs to do, no places to go, they might join terrorism,” said the traidtional ruler.

Albasu, therefore, advised the government to make sure that enough was being done to make the IDPs comfortable and as soon as possible rehabilitate their towns and take them back.

“This will make them useful and productive to their communities. But allowing them in camps and not providing what they need, we are also breeding another set of terrorists,” he said.

Olawale Rotimi: IDPs In Nigeria And A Call For Urgent Intervention

Among others, the growing level of violent attacks in Northern Nigeria has unavoidably led to the increase in the number of displaced persons in Nigeria. Due to siege laid by extremist in northern Nigeria, well over a million Nigerians are displaced and live in IDP camps in their own country.  There are varying statistics about the number of Nigerians living in IDP camps, according to the Displacement Tracking Index published in February 2015, 1,188,018 IDPs consisting of 149,357 households were identified in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states alone.  In addition to this, another 47,276 IDPs consisting of 5910 households were identified in Plateau, Nasarawa, Abuja, Kano and Kaduna states, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). In total, 1,235,294 IDPs were identified in northern Nigeria while the highest number of IDPs is in Borno state with 672,714, followed by Adamawa state with 220,159 and Yobe state 135,810.
According to the report been assessed, the IDP population is composed of the following:
·         53 % women and 47% men.
·         56% of the total IDP population are children of which more than half are up to 5 years old, while 42% are adults.
·         92% of IDPs were dis- placed by the insurgency.
·         The majority of the current IDP population was displaced in 2014 (79%).
·         The IDPs come mainly from Borno (62%), Adamawa (18%) and Yobe (13%).
·         87% of IDPs live with host families while 13% live in camps.
Boko Haram has killed more people than ISIS, particularly in 2014.  The Taliban which was rated as the deadliest group in 2013 was ranked third in 2014 despite killing over three thousand people in deadly terrorist attacks. In 2014 only, 32,658 people were killed by Boko Haram compared to 18,111 in 2013. This extremist has taken responsibility for deadly attacks in Nigeria’s capital and northern parts; with Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as the hotbed. These attacks have led to massive and incessant displacement of people in this geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Assessing the spate of displacement it spread across Nigeria and her neighbours. Aside government organized IDP camps, there are many IDP camps that are organized by people who escaped terrorist attacks in this zone while thousands migrated to peaceful parts of the country- south west Nigeria in particular. (How many IDP camps are situated in the south west?)
Despite efforts of the United Nations, its organs and other non-governmental organizations collaborating with the Government of Nigeria in order to ameliorate the conditions of IDPs and rehabilitate the victims, there are daunting challenges confronting victims of terrorist attacks in Nigeria. It is important to note that the thoroughly poor condition of IDPs in Nigeria reflects the impecunious condition millions of Nigerians live. There’s a wide gap of commitment to the welfare, security and rehabilitation of IDPs from the Federal and State government authorities. Briefly examined below, these are three major problems confronting government recognized IDPs camps in Nigeria:
Welfare: Displaced persons are finding it difficult to regain pre-conflict way of living because of the poor living condition; poor sanitation which exposes members of the camps to infectious diseases, poor medical facilities which accommodate growth of infectious bacteria, fungi and virus in their bodies, poor feeding which exposes them to malnutrition and poor condition of infrastructure such as power, water, roads e.t.c.
Considering the population of nursing mothers and children, several appeals have been made to previous and incumbent governments to ameliorate the condition of IDPs but created little or no result. Members of parliament representing affected regions have slammed the Federal and State Government Authorities severally but no result. Members of the IDP camps need the attention of the Nigerian government to ameliorate their conditions.
Security: In September 2015, the deadly terrorist group, Boko Haram in a suicide mission, attacked members of IDPs Camps in Madagali and Yola killing 12 persons. In one of the attacks, bombs were reported to have been detonated inside a tent at the IDP camp. This among others are security threats faced by members of IDP camps in Nigeria. Yet to recover from psychological trauma from loss of families, friends and properties, displaced persons are faced with security challenge coupled with a responsibility to protect themselves in their various camps. The inadequacy of security at the IDP camps opens them to attacks from terrorists and armed robbers.
Rehabilitation: Hosting IDPs in camps without solid rehabilitation plans makes them vulnerable to crime in a bid to survive. Members of IDP camps must be kept busy psychologically and rehabilitated economically to help them recover from the scourge of conflict.  Rehabilitation process of IDP camps members have been sufficiently low. There seem to be a deliberate attempt from the government to ignore the displaced persons; this is evident in several failed, unfulfilled promises made by government and the politicizing of IDPs. Today, the IDP camps is emerging a ground for politicians to score cheap political popularity by visiting to donate scanty items while leaving out long term solutions.
In addition to the comprehensive challenges stated above, it’s pertinent to also note that there are some IDP camps that are unrecognized by the Federal and state governments. This implies that, the figures of IDPs projected by the government are not accurate since they are limited to camps organized or recognized by the government. In a short documentary broadcast on Channels Television, tagged “Displaced Persons Seek Support of Government, NGOs”, Channels TV reporter, Victor Mathias, gave a statistical, analytic and visual plight of an IDP camp that the government has refused to identify despite the agonies faced by members of the camp. His submission is asserted below:
“The Malkohi IDP camp is located a few kilometres from the government recognized IDP camp in Yola and has no security, electricity, healthcare facilities, with little or no donation from the government, NGOs and International Bodies. With 215 households, 777 children excluding men and women, they find solace in the settlement after been sacked from their ancestral homes by Boko Haram. Some members have even contemplated suicide due to extreme pains from injuries sustained while fleeing from Boko Haram”
The reporter, Victor Mathias, also interacted with the Adamawa State Government through the Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Sajoh, who said the Federal and Adamawa State governments are aware of the existence of new IDP settlements but to integrate them into the government’s scheme, “proper” channel must be followed. Ahmed said until the government is informed through proper channel, no step will be taken to rescue these displaced persons.”
The above reported interaction between Channels Television journalist, Adamawa state government and an IDP camp reveals the poor condition the members of IDP settlements are exposed to and the nonchalance of government to help improve their plight. The refusal of Adamawa state government to recognize IDPs camps based on the claim that they haven’t followed “proper” channel violates responsibility of government to its citizens.
This disgraceful act against humanity also violates conventional conduct; Nigeria’s failure to responsibly accommodate Nigerians living in IDPs Camps within the country is too low a blow for the government. Recently in a similar development, we have seen European countries accommodate refugees from Syria who were displaced due to on-going war in Syria, unofficial immigrants accommodated in Europe. Again, Nigeria’s failure to accommodate her own citizens in IDP camps puts to question the commitment of the government to take responsibility for the security and welfare of the people. In the same vein, due to security reasons, IDPs in Madagali and Michika LGAs were not accessible for assessment by statisticians.
There is an urgent need to break protocols in recognizing and accommodating victims of deadly attacks in northern Nigeria. These bureaucracies are irrelevant for a compassionate government. All barricades against displaced persons must be lifted; government and its agencies should scout for displaced persons from settlement to settlement and bring them comfort, particularly in crisis ridden-area of the country. The attention of the United Nations Humans Right Commission, World Powers and NGOs should be drawn and quickened to this. Corruption and government irresponsibility shouldn’t infiltrate the IDP camps.

Tony Ademiluyi: Unmasking Budget 2016

President Muhammadu Buhari on getting to the National Assembly where he addressed a joint sitting apologized to the nation for the nauseating fuel scarcity in the country putting the blame on the doorstep of market speculators. However, there was no action packed strategy reeled out to Nigerians on how he intended to tackle the crisis beyond mere sloganeering. This contradicted the position of the garrulous minister for information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who put the blame at the doorstep of erstwhile President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. As the Spokesman of the government, we find this conflicting statement highly disturbing and points to a possible disconnect in the PMB cabinet so early in the day.

The budget at 6.08 trillion naira is the highest in the annals of our nation’s history saw it committing thirty percent of it towards capital expenditure. The President gave the nation hope that in future it will increase from that figure. The capital expenditure is aligned to meet the long term objectives to sustainable development. Given the vagaries of the oil and gas sector which is the mainstay of the economy, it made a whole lot of sense to peg the benchmark at $38 per barrel. However the decision to borrow a whopping 1.9 trillion naira representing about 2.16 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product is capable of greatly mortgaging the future of generations yet unborn. The borrowing agenda is still rather hazy: From which source? We hope it is not from the Bretton Woods Institutions as they have recently been lending their voice to the management of our economic matters. They have been ferocious in their call for the yanking off of the fuel subsidy without any framework for the building of new refineries to cushion the initial early effects. We cannot have amnesia to forget how their loans have crippled the economies of third world nations which we sadly have remained since independence due to our refusal to develop our own homegrown economic agenda that would best suit us. We must resist any temptation to source any of that borrowing from their sinister institutions. I recommend Walter Rodney’s evergreen masterpiece ‘How Europe underdeveloped Africa’ to be part of the reading list for those on the economic team. Nigeria doesn’t need any humungous borrowing. The proposed 1.9 trillion naira should be drastically reviewed downwards as there is no need to become a member of the Paris Club once more and go there cap in hand begging for debt reliefs.

For the first time, education is getting visible attention as it got the second highest chunk of the sectorial allocation with the vote of 369 billion. We commend the administration for heeding the call of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation for allocating at least twenty-six percent of its budgetary allocation to education. This isn’t up to that percentage but this is the best deal we have gotten so far. The proposed decision laid out by the Labour Minister, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige to employ 500,000 youths as graduate teachers is highly pro-people and youth friendly. It’s a much needed relief and soothing balm to the teeming number of unemployed and unemployable youths. However, half a million youths is a mere drop in the ocean when you consider the alarming statistics reeled out by the National Bureau of Statistics that over ten million youths are unemployed. Job creation anywhere in the world is private sector driven. As expected infrastructure as represented by the Power, Works and Housing Ministries got the highest chunk of the allocation with 433 billion given to it. It must go beyond votes. The enabling environment which would encourage entrepreneurs to spring up must be created. The reality of the information age has rendered the education – a byproduct of the industrial age largely obsolete. There should be a drastic shift in the curriculum right from the cradle to reflect this novel reality. There should be a national culture of self -reliance to get the nation out of the woods. The success of this culture is dependent on massive industrialization. The budget must be indicative of an agenda to get this sleeping giant industrialized in a manner reminiscent of the Asian Tigers. The budget implementation must take critical steps to curb import dependence and expand our revenue base through harnessing the power of human capital development. The move towards projecting the mining sector as the next thing after oil is a good one but the world has long advanced beyond mineral resources. Mineral resources is finite but that of human capital is infinite. We expected a budgetary allocation for the development of human capital if we are to stand on our two feet as a Sovereign Nation in a way typical of our Japan got up in barely nineteen years after the battering of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War.

The budget seems to have a job creation agenda which is a critical concern of the ailing economy. Renowned Political Economist, Prof. Pat Utomi called budget implementations in Nigeria a joke on Channels Television few hours before Buhari read out this one. We hope the implementers prove the erudite intellectual wrong. For the first time, the budget implementation won’t be a core function of the finance ministry as it has been transferred to the national planning ministry. Let us hope this signals a good omen for the New Year which will unfold in a matter of hours.

Let’s hope that the change slogan which this government used to bring itself into power doesn’t end up in the citizenry asking what is the difference between six and half a dozen?

Joseph Edgar: It’s A Class War, Stupid!!!

Nigerians, just like when Bill Clinton told the Americans during one of his election campaigns that it was the economy, I am also now telling Nigerians that it is a class war period.

Our sufferings and frustrations are not because we belong to any section of the country or because we are Igbos as the hapless Nnamdi Kanu and his ilk would have us believe it is simply because we remain the grass under the feet of a collection of elephants in a continous struggle for power both political and economic.

Our low level of education and enlightenment continue to put us in positions of servitude to be used and misused by the elites whose membership cut across ethnic lines and are kept together by their collective greed. The Marxists pushed this position in the 70s and we refused to see it. I have been mulling these thoughts and have decided to expand on it as I now have incontrovertible evidence that our oppressors do not take their decisions based on the integrity or otherwise of the people they claim to represent but are driven by the urge for the primitive and continuos accumulation of power and wealth.

Fela
My people, I watched this documentary on Nigeria and it was very clear that the civil war, several coups and economic bastardization that we have faced since we gained independence have been direct consequences of this struggle. Let me illustrate, I have always wondered why Fela the Late genius hated with a passion the Military especially Obasanjo and Yar’dua. The link is very clear, his mother was part of the independence push in the 50s. She attended most of the talks both in UK and in Nigeria. She fought gallantly and even dethroned a sitting Oba in the wake of her powerful incursions into politics. But immediately we gained independence she went into obscurity, cheated out of the fruits of her struggle culminating in her final humiliation by the OBJ junta. This was Felas grouse, how can his mother be so treated by these ‘vagabonds’ after all she had done for this country.

So what did he do, he fell back on the masses, taking advantage of their illiteracy and a need for release as a result of their massive poverty and suffering to rail against another section of the elitist club with which he was a major member by reason of his bourgeois birth. He wore the pants, smoked the weed all in his bid to show that he belonged to the masses. He succeeded to an extent but in death, his people came for him and took him away from the masses. They rewarded his family with political appointments, immortalization of his family name and all sort. Even today the Lagos state Government has given up although on lease as I hear a major part of our national historical monument – the Lagos Prison for his family to manage and maintain through his eldest daughter who is in a relationship with a talented Architect.

MKO Abiola

People, please open your eyes to the games of our masters. Another illustration is that of MKO Abiola, the purported winner of the June 12 Elections. He always regaled us with stories of his poverty, his poor upbringing and all. He did all these to curry the support of the masses in his fight against his colleagues as he struggled for power. He was not poor even in his youth, he was educated by Felas father in a school meant for elites and their children. Obasanjo attended the same school, (hope you are seeing the link) sent abroad to study and came back to join the Lagos University Teaching hospital from where he moved to some multi national and still as a very young man bought his first company. As a bonafide member of the elitist club, his colleagues in the military gave him all sorts of contracts making him one of the richest Nigerians of all time. During this time, he made very shallow contributions to the welfare of the masses. Making gratitious donations which were in no way compared to the massive wealth he had amassed through his prostituting with the military membership of the elitist club. All these was to hoodwink us and make us believe that he was a trusted ally.

But all his charade was blown open when he was bluntly told by his colleagues that the Presidency was not ‘for sale’. However in his stubbornness he continued, relying on the bridge he had built between himself and the people to deliver the Presidency. This failed him for he underestimated the power of his cabal of wolves, his ambitions were frustrated by the military junta and he jumped to the masses for help like they always do, but we had been thoroughly weakened by his activities and that of his cohorts in the elitist movement and he invariably lost his life.

The linkages are very strong. The same people and their children have been ruling us both politically and economically. They only jump at ethnic and tribal colorations when they loose out in their intra class struggle. Falling back on the poor people to fight for them, claiming to have been cheated because they belong to a certain tribe but conveniently forgetting to state clearly that they were just poor strategist in a club the majority of us will never belong.

Odumegwu Ojukwu
Let’s look at Ojukwu the leader of the Biafran Secessionist movement. His father was at the time the richest Nigerian. Ojukwu lived a life of privilege and attended the best schools. His education gave him a little advantage over the other members who were firmly divided into three class subdivisions within the elitist movement- the political, economic and military. Ojukwu played in all the spheres and did not understand why he should be subjugated to Gowon who played in only one space and was not as educated. The progrom in the North and the continued massacre of the igbos gave him the firm vehicle and platform to carry out what to me and some scholars was a purely egoistic Crusade which led to the killing of over 2m Nigerians. After the war, what did we hear, ‘no victor no vanquished’, Ojukwu had run away with his famous Mercedes Benz to live a life of luxury in exile. This kind of camaraderie was a slap on the face of all those who had lost their lives, suffered untold suffering and saw their destinies thwarted but what would you expect after a fight between ‘two brothers’?

The competition between the elites led to massive recruitments on all sides. The North carried out their Northernization policy, using the famed Barewa College as a bastion for recruitment into the civil service and the military school in Zaria for recruitment into the military. The west embarked on theirs too sending their scions out to the UK on scholarships mostly to study Law. That is why you hear of people like Fani Kayode being a third generation Cambridge educated lawyer. The Easterners also had theirs with what was then called the Argonauts, this was the Azikiwe led young Igbo Turks who were mostly educated and trained in the U.S steeped in the radicalism of the civil rights movements. Today you will see their children and descendants still holding forte.

People like Bola Tinubu, El Rufai, Buba Marwa, Dasuki, Femi Otedola, Aliko Dangote, Keem Bello Osagie, Udo Udoma are all direct descendants and beneficiaries of the bastion of elitist control.

How do these elitists perpetuate themselves in power? Its Simple. Education and in some cases marriage. They have identified very early the importance of education hence the continuos push for their children and chosen ones to get the very best in education and tutelage. They go to the very best schools in the world and get the kind of exposure that common people’s children will never get. In the olden days it was through scholarships opened to party members children and wards, today its making sure recruitment into choice jobs was strictly based on the level and quality of education preferably overseas degrees. Tell me how will a Shomolu man’s son no matter how brilliant compete?

They have also perfected the art of intra class marriage. They marry themselves ensuring continuity and spreading of bloodlines although firmly within the elitist circle. Any attempt to marry out of this class is rebuffed and frustrated until the usurper packs his bags and runs away.

Clear illustration, look at the Management of Forte Oil and the pedigree of its Chairman you will see what we are saying. From the Group Managing Director to the Chief Financial Officer are children with strong pedigree that can be traced back two generations. They also parade very strong educational qualifications and tremendous exposure. So how will someone who went to Makoko Comprehensive and graduated from our ASUU strike bedeviled institutions compete favorably with these people. So you see, it’s a class war my people.

Femi Otedola

Otedola himself comes from a strong pedigree that could be traced to the Awoist free education and scholarship platforms of the old western region. His father being one of the wealthiest people in the land emerged as the first ‘sleeping’ Governor of Lagos State and eventually today Femi is one of the wealthiest black men in the world. He is also perpetuating the elitist lineage by sending his own kids to the very best schools in the world, recruiting only the very best that his money can afford from a very shallow pool of labour and effectively limiting the rest of us no matter where we come from Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo or Ibibio to the servitude that remains our fate.

Now that it’s rosy, we are not hearing that he is enjoying all of these because he is a Yoruba man o. By the time, he experiences a small hiccup, maybe a little intra class struggle he would fall back on his people and scream for war that these Hausa people want to take his firm because he is Yoruba.

This is where Nnamdi Kanu is getting it all wrong. The igbos are not suffering because they are Igbos, they are suffering because of their position in the societal hierarchy which decides who stays where no matter where you come from. Why do you think the South Eastern Governors will never support his position? it’s because it may cause an imbalance of power and a restriction to resources. The Igbo elites will always look at Nnamdi Kanu as an orphan and treat him as such.

People, we are all suffering. Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbira, Ijaw. A poor man is a poor man. The same sickness in Onitsha is the same sickness in Kano. Have you seen the poverty in the North? Have you been to Makoko in Lagos? Have you been to the slums of Aba? We are fighting like fools because we do not know who the enemy is.

Biafra will not put food on the tables of the poor disenfranchised Igbo man, Biafra will not give him infrastructure, send his children to school or even give him a voice. The issue can never be Biafra, the issue is elitist suppression and full control of the levers of the economy emasculating the masses throughout Nigeria.

If you doubt me, let us allow Biafra go and you will immediately see the permutation replay itself with the rebirth of these same elitist people creating a new hierarchy and entrenching the same issues that led to the creation of Biafra. Another Ilustration, IBBs rash of new states did not solve the issues but indeed created a new set of minorities still suffering from lack. I was a minority in the old Cross River State and still remain. Minority in the new Akwa Ibom State with my grandfathers house still not joined to the National grid. So what are we talking about.

The solution is education. We must break the walls of illiteracy by liberalizing education. Let’s enlighten everybody so that we all can at least see issues in its true form instead of its present coloration along ethnic and tribal lines.

It is a class war and the sooner we realize this the closer we will get to the Uhuru.

Nigeria’s 4 Refineries Repositioned To Produce 10M Litres Of PMS Daily – Kachikwu

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, said the nation’s refineries had been repositioned to produce not less than 10 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, per day.

Kachikwu stated this on Sunday during his official visit to Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC).

According to him, the mission of the visit was to ascertain the current state of the refinery and identify areas of challenges for the workers at the refinery.

“A lot of work has been done and a lot manpower have been put in place. But a lot still needs to be done in order to put this refinery to work continuously and reliably,” he said.

He noted that a lot of progress has been made in terms of availability of fuel in the various cities and towns as the long queues are fast disappearing from the filling stations.

While commending the management of KRPC for keeping the refinery working for more than a week now, he however said there was room for improvement so as to move the current production level from 1.5 million litres to 2 or 3 million litres per day.

He expressed confidence that with more refineries coming on stream the fuel supply situation will continue to improve in the country.

While fielding questions later from newsmen, the minister said the Federal Government was doing all it could do to ensure the subsidy on fuel is resolved without inflicting more pains on ordinary Nigerians.

“Everybody is on the same page that we need to get out of it; should we sale product at a certain price or should we let free market rolling so that we can sky rocket prices,” he said.

According to him, the President says that product should go for N87 per litre for now and that he has given an approval to look at market trends and make adjustment if need be.

He assured that the administration was committed to ensuring adequate supply of petroleum products across the country.

The minister, who was received by the Managing Director of KRPC management headed by Mr Saidu Mohammed, was accompanied by top NNPC officials during the visit.

Minister Suspends Abuja Airport Officials Over Turkish Airlines fiasco

The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has ordered the suspension of three top officials of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, over the recent incident involving Turkish Airlines at the airport. Sirika disclosed this while briefing newsmen after listening to explanations by the airport officials on the incident on Sunday in Abuja.

He added that the ministry had also ordered thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the breach, as well as why the airline brought in passengers without their luggage. The suspended officials, according to him, are the Airport Manager, Terminal Manager and Head of Airport Security, who were ordered to handover to their next in rank pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The minister said the explanation by the officials of the airport that the security personnel on duty were overpowered was not acceptable, ordering for thorough investigation into the incident. He stated that the actions of the passengers by forcing their ways into the tarmac and blocked the aircraft from taking off was a security breach which must not be condoned.

He said: “There has been an unfortunate incident where some agitated passengers of the Turkish Airlines arrived without their luggage making them to force their way into the tarmac which is a breach of security. “The explanation given is not satisfactory because the primary purpose of the government is to ensure safety of lives and property of its citizens.

“The cardinal objective of this administration is to secure the country and manage it and we cannot fail in aviation and we cannot fail in this important assignment at a very important point. “We have ordered for the investigation into the matter immediately and all the people that are manning the various places; Airport Manager, Terminal Manager and Head of Security, should handover to the next man in rank pending the outcome of the investigation.

“As to the airline also, the Consumer Protection Unit of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been ordered to find out what happened, how compliant they are and deal with it accordingly,” he said. Sirika said the ministry was yet to get the flight manifest to be able to ascertain the number of passengers involved, which he added were many in number.

According to him, they got agitated and apparently they got access into the prohibited area because there was security lapse. The minister stated that the nation’s aviation sector had the capacity to grow, adding that it was already showing signal that it could tremendously contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to him, aviation is carrying by value, 31 per cent of the world cargo which make it a very important industry as the fastest means of transportation more efficiently.

He said: “With specific to Nigeria, you could see how we grew from Kano Airport where the first plane landed in the country to about 22 Federal Government-owned airports plus several other private owned airports. “On the whole, aviation, I can say, has grown to an appreciable level in the country and it has the capacity to grow more which is important to the economy of the country.”

Man Falls Off A Cliff Walking Head Down On His Phone

Time reports on a man who plunged to his death off a San Diego cliff on Christmas Day while he was distracted by an electronic device.

The man, who NBC 7 says has been identified as 33-year-old Joshua M Burwell of Sheridan, Indiana, fell 60 feet from Sunset Cliffs on Friday at 5 p.m. People who saw him before the fall said he seemed to be looking at either a cell phone or a camera while walking.

“Witnesses stated seeing someone distracted by an electronic device and he just fell over the edge,” said San Diego Lifeguard Bill Bender. “[He] wasn’t watching where he was walking, he was looking down at the device in his hands.”

After the man fell, three people climbed down the rocks to help rescue him and administer first aid.

“They acted quickly, they found a way to get down the cliff,” Bender said, according to NBC 7. “They put themselves at jeopardy…They administered CPR to the person in attempt to save a life.”

Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead when medics arrived on the scene.

“Just like driving and using a cell phone, you don’t want to be walking and using a cell phone or be distracted or anything,” Bender said.

FG Currently Not Paying Subsidy On Petrol- Kachikwu

Dr Ibe Kachikwu Minster of State For Petroleum on SubsidyThe Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, says the Nigerian government has suspended the subsidy on petroleum products as at today, December 27, as a result of the current low price of crude in the international market.

Dr. Kachikwu said the non-payment of subsidy would remain the same, as long as market trends allow.

He told reporters on Sunday in Kaduna that if crude prices increase, there would be a review which would be tackled under the newly introduced price modulation in the sector.

The price modulation, according to the Minister, is not an outright removal of petrol subsidy.

Nigerian Army Nabs 7 Boko Haram Bomb Specialists

The Nigerian Army said on Sunday that it arrested 7 Boko Haram bomb specialists.

In a statement sent on behalf of the Army by PRNigeria, the army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said the suspects were arrested in Kaduna “after painstaking surveillance and proactive intelligence operations over period of time.”

Read the Army’s full statement below:
Another catastrophe was averted in Kaduna State and other contiguous areas when troops of the Nigerian Army arrested 7 suspected Boko Haram terrorists bomb and Improvised Explosive making Devices (IEDs) specialists.
The terrorists were arrested in Kaduna after painstaking surveillance and proactive intelligence operations over period of time.
From all indications, the suspects were in Kaduna to conduct suicide bombings, kill and maimed innocent citizens in the state and other surrounding areas during the festive period. Recall that recently in Maiduguri some of them were arrested while trying to detonate IEDs carried in food containers in public places.
The arrest of these suspects would no doubt assist in the fight against terrorism in the country, more so as the military have technically defeated the Boko Haram terrorists in the field, the terrorists have resorted to attacking soft targets through suicide bombings, IEDs and harassing attacks on isolated communities.
Therefore, the public are please requested to continue to be more vigilant and security conscious by reporting suspicious persons and movements to the security agencies.
This request has become necessary because the terrorists have resorted to mingling with the public across the country after sensing the futility of their encounter with troops in the north east. Therefore, they adopt other methods of perpetuating violence in the society.”

Reuben Abati: What The Witches Said

“How was Christmas?”

“It’s come and gone. Life goes on. We thank God for the gift of life.”

“Life will always go on.”

“But without life, we can’t have hope.”

“Without hope, life has no meaning.”

“I am still in a Christmas mood though. I get a chance to rest a lot during holidays”
“Where were you?”

“I was in my home town, the city of hope. I refused to be deterred by fuel scarcity, the scarcity of cash and the scarcity of goodwill.”

“That your town where nobody sells a brand new car, no single car mart where you can get tear rubber, all the major streets are littered with Tokunbo vehicles on sale. Yeah, the town of hope.”

“Talking about hope, you know. During Christmas, I saw a story about Christmas in Senegal, showing how in a country with about 94% of the population being Muslims, Christmas is celebrated.”

“By Muslims?”

“Yes. Muslims wearing Father Christmas clothes, decorating their homes for Christmas and joining the small percentage of Christians to celebrate.”

“Are you sure the attraction is not commerce? Christmas is big business, and Senegal is a major tourist destination.”

“I think it is more about religious tolerance in that country and people learning to accommodate and enjoy diversity. For me, that is the message. People can belong to different religious faiths and yet live happily together.”

“Hmm. We need that message in Nigeria.”

“Ironically, something like that also actually happened in Nigeria, this Christmas”

“Where?”

 “In Kaduna.”

“When? How?”

“I learnt some Muslim women went to Kaduna prison to give food to prisoners to celebrate Christmas. “

“Christmas or Eid el Maulud? You know there were two events: the birthday of Prophet Muhammed (SAW) and that of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

“I am sure. The Muslim women visited the prison on Christmas Day. And at the Christ Evangelical Intercessory Fellowship Ministry, also in Kaduna, more than 150 Muslims attended Christmas Day church service.”

“If what you are saying is true, then that is great, beautiful, fantastic.  Religion has done too much damage in our society.  Can you imagine some people going to destroy somebody’s mother’s grave just because they do not like his brand of worship? People should stop killing the living and the dead because of religious differences. We should accommodate our differences and join hands to move Nigeria forward.”

“I know. But how far should this accommodation thing go? Should it also include witches?”

“Witchcraft?”

“Yes.”

“Hey, blood of Jesus!”

“Look at you. Where were you when the other day, the spokesman for the Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria (WIZAN) issued a press statement saying they the white witches of Nigeria support President Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign”

“White witches. Winch dey get colour?’

“Na so I hear oh. White winch, Black winch, Red winch”

“All of them winching, winching people from the pit of darkness. Chei, blood of Jesus!”

“The spokesman for White Witches said they are good people with members in every state of the Federation and that as patriots, if they are invited, they are ready to assist the government to bring corrupt persons to book.”

“Witches have a spokesman and a nationwide network, and they now issue press statements?  Father, your words are forever true. End time is here! And Nigeria never fails to surprise somebody; everyday, every minute, something new always crops up in this country.”

“I don’t get you. But you just spoke about diversity, accommodation, inclusiveness, and now you are contradicting yourself.”

“Not witchcraft please. Light and darkness cannot mix. I support freedom yes, inclusiveness and all that, but not the kind of support that will take me to Hell-fire.”

“Hell is in your mind. Heaven is a mythological construct. But look at the proposal. The witches want to help the government.”

“How? Will the Federal Government set up a Special Court for White Witches fighting Corruption?”

“I guess they will be very effective. See how you’ve been shivering since you heard that witches have become nationalists and change agents. Only the guilty are afraid.”

“Will they also help to resolve fuel scarcity issues, power supply problems, and reckless driving on our roads?”

“This is a democracy. Let all the flowers bloom.”

Witches don they get spokesman. I thought the law forbids anyone from belonging to a secret society, a cult and so on.”

“Well, as it is the white witches association is no longer a secret society.  They are now in the open. Don’t be surprised if very soon they advertise vacancies for membership.”

“God forbid.”

“Siddon there, dey talk. You’d be surprised how many media houses will collect the adverts, and publish, get paid for services rendered, and claim that this is a democracy.”

“Hmmm”

“See. Smell the coffee. The thing is that even this thing called government is a kind of witchcraft.  White, black and red witchcraft combined; that is what is called government!”

“And that’s why we need spiritual redemption.”

“Keep sermonizing. Were you not in this country when during the last general elections, the National Association of Prostitutes also issued a statement on how the elections should be organized?”

“Prostitutes also have a spokesperson? No shame?”

“It was their President that spoke. They even promised free sex. But I wouldn’t know if they made good on that offer.”

“Wait oh.”

“What?”

“I am trying to remember something.”

“What is that?”

“These your witches and wizards, didn’t they also make certain predictions during the last elections?”

“I don’t remember”

“They did. They openly endorsed President Jonathan. They said they didn’t see any vacancy in Aso Rock in their crystal ball, and they pledged their support.”

“May be the spirits changed and the witches also changed.”

“Ha!”

“It is called change. Once they wave that their broom”

“Witches use broom?”

“Yes. Once they wave that their broom over their magical pot… but let me just advise you, don’t go about questioning the wisdom of witches. It can be dangerous.”

“I am a child of Light.”

“Whatever you are, just know that when a witch strikes you…you can’t do anything to witches. Nobody can catch the air.”

“You are beginning to sound as if you are one of them. And if you are not, well, you may end up becoming a witch yourself.”

“Me? No.”

“It is like you like them.”

“I am just saying in a democracy, you are bound to see all kinds of things. That is why it is a democracy.”

“I know. That is why Donald Trump is getting good ratings in the US Presidential race.”

“Let’s leave witches alone, I beg.”

“But what have they said about this coming year, 2016?”

“How?”

“Any predictions?”

“You don’t need witches to predict any new year.  I can do it myself.”

“I said it. There is something you are not telling me. I wasn’t talking about witches. I was referring to the pastors who always look into the future.”

“Dey there. You don’t need to be a witch or a pastor to make predictions. When I reviewed some of my own projections for 2015, I was almost 80% accurate. You just need to learn how it is done.”

“How?”

“Okay, let me assist you. See in the year of our Lord, 2016, care must be taken in the aviation industry to avoid air mishap. In the course of the year, two prominent Nigerians must pray seriously against bereavement in their families. Two Governors are likely to face the threat of removal from office. And a former state Governor should be careful not to lose his son-in-law. I see fire outbreak in two major markets, North and South, with many casualties. Two First Class Traditional Rulers are likely to join their ancestors before the month of June.  Some directors in the public service will lose their positions.  I see earthquake occurring somewhere in the Pacific. There will be a boom in the Agriculture Sector. 2016 is going to be a year of bountiful harvest. More lives will still be lost to Boko Haram violence.  The Naira will remain unpredictable….”

“What kind of crystal ball do you use, if I may ask?”

“What crystal ball does your Pastor use?”

“My Pastor doesn’t use a crystal ball. He is filled with the Holy Spirit.”

“Many of these Pastors predict so many things and they don’t even get it right. And yet this year again, they will sell books of predictions to their congregation.”

“My own Pastor is a man of God. He is always at least 85% accurate, every year.”

“Well, I have made my own predictions too. You can either believe me or you believe your Pastor; you choose.  But you’d see that I am always very accurate.”

“You are just using commonsense, my friend.”

“And what does your Pastor use?”

“There are people who have the gift of prophecy, they can see into the future. Don’t blaspheme.”  “Don’t worry. When your pastor publishes his book of predictions, get me two copies, please. I am in a generous mood. I don’t have a problem helping him to make quick profit.”

“Only God can forgive you.”

“So, technically speaking, what are you saying?”

“I am saying, that technically, Nigeria will survive 2016, prophecy or no prophecy. God never forsakes his own people.”

“Okay. I understand, you mean technically, the current fuel scarcity will end.”

“Yes”

“And technically, power supply will improve, and we will not have any more Dumsor.”

“What is Dumsor?”

That is how technically, the people of Ghana, describe persistent power outages.”

“But how do our people describe it?”

“They say technically, all our problems will be defeated.”

“You mean, technically, all Nigerians will become prosperous in 2016?”

“Yes”.

“Actually, come to think of it, everything is technical.”

“Oh, certainly, once you understand the technique of the technicality.”

“Like the announcement that the pump price of fuel will be reduced to N85 per litre in January 2016?”

“Yes! You got it! Technically!”

“But I have been buying fuel at N130 per litre.”

“That is the technicality”

“I am confused.”

“That is because you don’t have a gift for technical things.”

“Like witchcraft, yes.”

“Don’t worry, you’d learn. Just have an open mind.”

“But look at this other matter. Even international airlines including British Airways, are now threatening to reduce their flights to Nigeria by early 2016.”

“So?”

“They say they can’t get aviation fuel in Nigeria and that the scarcity of foreign exchange has slowed down the Nigerian economy.”

“They should go and sit down. Otherwise we will give them the MTN treatment. Who is asking foreign airlines to start analyzing Nigeria’s 2016 Budget? If they like let them reduce all their flights. We will defeat those foreign airlines, technically.  In fact, Nigerians will start traveling to Europe, Dubai, wherever, by road. Nonsense!”

“What?”

“Yes, London by road, why not?”

What Mourinho Told Me After Chelsea’s Exit- Lukaku

Belgium star, Romelu Lukaku, has said that former Blues boss Jose Mourinho did not force him out at Chelsea and revealed the Portuguese was the first person to send him a message of support following his move to Everton.

“Choices have been made by me. By me. Not by them,” Lukaku told the Daily Express.

Mourinho has been criticised for allowing the Belgian to leave Stamford Bridge, initially on loan for the 2013-14 campaign before the move was made permanent by Everton the following summer.

Lukaku, who has scored in each of his last seven Premier League games, admits he is saddened by Mourinho’s exit and believes the criticism surrounding the former Chelsea manager is unfair.

“Everyone says it is Mourinho’s fault, but it is not his fault because I made the decision. I went to his office to ask if I could go.

“He was the first one to say, ‘Good luck.’ When I signed the deal [at Everton] at 11 o’clock, I got a text message on my old BlackBerry saying ‘Good luck, do your best and I will see you next season.’ He was the first, nobody knows that and that is why for me he gets immense respect.

In a press statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, President Buhari said he was greatly shaken and shocked by such large-scale loss of human lives in a single industrial accident, which casts a gloom on the families of the victims “who were looking forward to a joyous Christmas celebration”.

The President extended his condolences to the families of the victims, the people and the government of Anambra State over what he described as “this unfortunate tragedy on Christmas eve”, adding that “my heart and prayers go out to these grieving families at this difficult and painful moment”.

The Man To Be Edo State’s Next Governor- Oshiomole

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has said that someone who believes in the State and has the capacity to manage it will emerge as candidate of the All Progressives Party (APC) and win the votes of the people as the Governor in the 2016 gubernatorial election in the State.

The Governor disclosed this while addressing Benin Palace chiefs, led by Chief John Oviasogie, the Eribo of Benin, who paid him a courtesy visit in the Government House. He said he is concerened about who will emerge as the party’s flagbearer just like any other member of the party, assuring that there will be a level-playing field for all.

Receiving the chiefs, Governor Oshiomhole said, “from my inner insight of what this job entails, I believe we should look for people who believe in the State and have the capacity to run it. We have the right to educate the people about the person whom we think will be safe. Be rest assured that I am as concerned as yourselves because we have seen the damage which the wrong driver can do to our collective vehicle. Everything is the same, the only difference is the person who heads the government. May God give us a governor that will put Edo people first, that will respect the traditional institution and that will work for the unity of our people across the 192 wards.

“As I have said repeatedly, I think all of us must work together to ensure that we have a governor who, first and foremost, believes in Benin, and who believes in the State, because if someone does not believe in the State, and he has power, he will help himself. Running a government is different from running a private enterprise. When you are working for a government, the interest is the people of the State. The second is to have the capacity to manage finances prudently because you may wish to do your best, but you cannot give what you don’t have. If you don’t have the brain, if you don’t have the knowledge and you don’t have the capacity, you will not be able to do it. So, we need people who can apply resources creatively.

“We haven’t solved all the problems, but we have made a lot of progress, and I am sure if the next governor will continue from where we will stop, for eight years of uninterrupted progress, I am sure that Benin Kingdom will be wearing a complete new look.”

NNPC To Announce 85 Naira Fuel Pump Price In January

Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu says the NNPC will announce a pump price of 85 naira per litre of petrol in January 2016.

Dr. Kachikwu said that the new pump price is according to a PPPRA template which he signed off on Wednesday which will be the first reflection of the price modulation that will kick off fully in the petroleum sector by January 2016.

Dr. Kachikwu, who took a tour of the refineries in Port Harcourt on Christmas Day, said that the price modulation is to help ensure the fluctuation of prices to reflect the realities of the crude oil market.

He, however, said that all efforts were being made to get the refineries to start up to 60% production also in January that will supply about 11 million litres of petrol daily.

“If you look at the new PPPRA template that we developed and which I just signed off two days ago, when it is announced you will find out that for now (and I use the emphatic word of the President ‘for now’), the price of the refined product will actually be lower than 87 naira, It will be 85. We will probably announce that in January if the prices hold.

“What that does for you is that its modulating. If it goes up you move up, if it comes down you come down. So we take away the fact of having to go find funds to pay for these subsidies that we cannot afford.

“More importantly we try to be as close to the pump price that we have now as possible,” he said.

Speaking during the visit, Mr Alagoa Morris, Coordinator of the Lead Plaintiffs, said that the team’s advocacy visit to the commissioner was to solicit the support of the state government in the legal action.

He told Wills that the group commenced the legal action against Chevron in San Francisco on Dec. 9.

Morris, an environmentalist, noted that the efforts of the Bayelsa Ministry of Environment were commendable, and urged the government to assist the victims in their search for justice.

“The Lead Plaintiffs thought it wise to pay you this advocacy and courtesy visit, to formally inform you about the on-going cases in the U.S.

We also want to interact with you especially as your ministry also carried out some investigations on the incident.

Christmas: Buhari Urges Nigerians To Exhibit Virtues Of Love, Justice, Service To Others

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others.

The President made the call in a Christmas message to Nigerians, especially the Christian faithful, as they celebrate this year’s Christmas on Friday.

“I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s Christmas.

On this occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us all rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others which he taught.

There can be no doubt that a greater manifestation of these virtues and ideals in our lives will immensely help us to become a more united, peaceful, secure and progressive nation.’’

Buhari also enjoined Nigerians to reach out in love and compassion to fellow Nigerians who were in distress at this period of the nation’s history.

He, particularly, urged Nigerians to remember victims of terrorism and insurgency in the country, especially Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

According to him, the Federal Government will continue to collaborate with state governments and other stakeholders to ease the harsh conditions in IDP camps.

He said his administration’s ultimate objective was to quickly end insurgency and return the IDPs to their homes.

“We must never again allow any group to hold the nation to ransom under whatever guise.

Let us also not allow current socio-economic and security challenges to dampen our expectations for a better Nigeria,’’ he added.

The President stated that his administration had taken a number of measures to restore hope to the people.

According to him, the 2016 Budget defines his administration’s commitment to giving Nigeria a new lease of life.

“Our change slogan is not a campaign gimmick but a promise that must be kept.’’

He further expressed the determination of the Federal Government to bring about tangible changes in the lives of all Nigerians.

“In this regard, efforts will be intensified to recover stolen funds, block revenue leakages and enthrone due process, transparency and accountability.

“Public office is a public trust that must be held to the highest ethical standards.

“I wish all Nigerians a Merry Christmas.

“Please drive carefully,’’ he said.

DPR Begins 24-Hour Surveillance On Depots, Filling Stations

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) says it has set up a 24-hour special task force to supervise and monitor petrol sales at depots and stations.

It said that the task force would sanction depots and stations selling above the recommended price.

Mrs Dorothy Bassey, Assistant Director, Public Affairs in DPR, disclosed this in telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday.

Bassey said the special team was set up purposely for the Yuletide with powers to take over the sale of the product from those selling above the approved price.

She said that the agency had met with stakeholders to convey government’s displeasure on illegal sale of petrol above the stipulated price and the long queues at the filling stations.

The DPR warned that those involved in the criminal act would henceforth lose their licence under the new steps being taken by agency to enforce discipline.

“We have instituted 24-hour surveillance by special task force which we are not going to disclose their identity because we don’t want them to be harassed.

Bassey said that those selling petrol above the pump price were doing so at night.

She said that any station caught would be forced to sell at the official price “so that we don’t seal them to compound the scarcity”.

She said that the agency had some dedicated numbers on its Website through which Nigerians could send their complaints.

Meanwhile, some marketers, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the ongoing petrol scarcity would persist as government had failed to address issue of foreign exchange hindering fuel importation.

They said that marketers were willing to import fuel, but scarcity of foreign exchange remained a serious challenge.

NAN correspondent, who monitored sale of petrol in parts of Lagos on Thursday, reported that queues were seen in some filling stations on Ikorodu Road, Maryland and Alaka area.

Many stations were still not selling petrol.

Some stations in Epe, Ibeju-Lekki and Ikorodu were selling petrol between N100 and N 110 per litre.

An Islamic Scholar, Alhaji Miftaudeen Balogun, on Wednesday advocated for English Language lessons for students in Almajiri Integrated Schools in the country.

Balogun, the leader of Abuja Chapter of Dairat Jafariyat Fitorikat Tijaniyat Islamic organisation of Nigeria, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said that understanding English language, which was general language of communication in the classroom, was one of the major problems faced by the students.

The cleric said that this challenge scared many students to escape from the school and return to the streets to beg for alms.

“The school should organise extra lessons for the students, especially in English language and Mathematics. The school environment should be made more convenient and conducive for learning.’’

Balogun stressed the need for school administrators and teachers to be closer to the students and give them listening ears.

“Adequate and updated instructional materials should be provided by the government, NGOs, philanthropists, and other stakeholders in Almajiri education.

Other major notable problem is the inadequacy of food given to the students. However, the schools have qualified teachers who are NCE and university graduates.

Likewise the teachers are not only experienced but also punctual and committed to their duty.’’

Balogun said the food supply to the school should be adequate and regular.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Federal Government established the Almajiri Integrated Schools (AIS) to curtail the menace of street begging by children and youths in the name of pursuing Qur’anic Education.

Appeal Court Dismisses Ogboru’s Appeal Against Okowa

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, has dismissed an appeal that was lodged against the election victory of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, by candidate of the Labour Party, LP,? in the April 11 governorship election in the state, ?Chief Great Ogboru.

In a unanimous judgment, a five-man panel of Justices of the appellate court led by Justice ?Uwani Abba-Aji, upheld the verdict of the Delta State ?Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which had on ?October 24, ?affirmed Okowa’s election.

The appellate court said the tribunal was right when it ?held that the petitioner failed to prove that the governorship election was characterised by over-voting and manifest corrupt practices.

Besides, the appeal court panel maintained that Ogboru could not prove that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance to both the Electoral Act, 2010, and the Election Guidelines and Manual ?that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, issued for the purpose of the election.

“Where in election petition, there are allegations of irregularities and corrupt practices, the allegation ?must be proved beyond every reasonable doubt”, the court held.
It stressed that a petitioner challenging the outcome of an election on ground of irregularity, must show that ?such irregularity substantially affected the outcome of the election.

More so, the appellate court held that Ogboru failed to prove that but for the alleged corrupt practices, he would have won the Delta State governorship election.
Consequently, the appeal was dismissed for want of merit.
?
Ogboru had approached the appellate court, praying it to set aside the judgement of the tribunal.
?He contended that ?the total number of votes recorded at the end of the election, far exceeded the number of voters accredited by the card reader machines.

The appellant sought for the nullification of the governorship election and the declaration of a fresh poll in the state.
However, while refusing his prayers, Justice Abba-Aji ?who read the lead judgment, held that Ogboru merely relied on records of the card reader accreditation, without demonstrating the documents through credible evidence.
Justice Abba-Aji noted that the LP candidate never challenged the evidence of the respondents laid before the tribunal.

She observed that even witnesses Ogboru brought before the lower tribunal testified that the the card readers had challenges in many part of the states and that apart from the use of card reader, there was also manual accreditation.
The court held that the appellant ought to have established that the card reader machines functioned optimally in all the polling units in the state, before placing sole reliance on the card reader report.

Meantime, the appeal court has also dismissed three separate cross-appeals that were filed before it by Okowa, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The court held that the three appeals which also arose from the judgement of ?the tribunal, lacked merit.
Judgment is currently ongoing in a separate appeal that was lodged against Okowa by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its own governorship candidate in the state, ?Olorogun O’ tega Emerhor.

Minister Urges Media To Report Insurgency With National Fervour

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has urged media professionals to report issues relating to the fight against insurgency with national interest in mind.

The minister gave the advice during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos on Wednesday.

He made the plea against the backdrop of a recent publication, which he said was an attempt by insurgents to discredit the efforts of Nigerian military.

“As the Dec. 31 deadline approaches, Boko Haram and ISIS have launched their propaganda seeking to discredit the Nigerian military to give the impression that they (terrorist) are still holding sway.

A report in that regard was widely published in newspapers a few days ago.

This is not true, Boko Haram is dispersed and largely depleted; the insurgents are hungry, they are sick and desperate.”

He added that the sect had perfected plans to spread propaganda messages, especially during this festive season and urged the public to disregard such messages.

“In the days ahead, they (Boko Haram) will release propaganda videos through their usual channels.

We must not give this any play because it is nothing but a hoax.’’

He, therefore, enjoined media professionals to work in the spirit of national interest, saying “in this time of war, you cannot afford to be neutral.

“Yes, you must remain professional at all times and we are not asking you to do anything less but you must also act in the national interest always.

Acting in the national interest means not playing up the reports of the cowardly Boko Haram attacks on soft targets.

Acting in the national interest means not regurgitating the propaganda of Boko Haram and its fellow terrorist group, ISIS.

It means extolling the bravery and sacrifice of our gallantry; viewing the war from a partisan prism.

It also means rallying all Nigerians irrespective of our religious or political background to support the war.

“It is not a war of the north; it is not the war of any religion, it a war belonging to all of us’’, he said.

Osinbajo Asks NEPC To Drive ‘Zero-oil Plan’ For Diversification

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday mandated the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), to lead the drive for the Federal Government’s economic diversification programme through its Zero- Oil in Nigeria Plan.

Osinbajo gave the directive when the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEPC, Chief Olusegun Awolowo, paid him a visit and presented the “achieving Zero-oil in Nigeria’’ plan.

The vice president said the presentation was comprehensive and timely considering that President Muhammadu Buhari had presented the 2016 budget of N6.08 trillion to the National Assembly and harped on economic diversification to fund it.

He said that focusing on agriculture and petrochemicals might be a good way forward in the diversification and urged NEPC to develop step-by-step approach on how to achieve the plan.

Osinbajo restated Buhari’s determination to improve the revenue of the country through non-oil sector in order to depend less on oil revenue adding that the administration would encourage all organisations to key into the plan.

“I certainly look forward to working with you on this,’’ Osinbajo declared, adding that such plan was long overdue in the country.

Osinbajo said NEPC had a major challenge of ensuring the implementation of the plan but called for synergy among the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to achieve the objective.

Awolowo told State House Correspondents that “this is a plan that we think will really help Nigeria out of the doldrums we now face.

“We are facing a drop of revenue of over $30 billion; our revenue from oil has fallen from$70 billion to about $40 billion; That alone can kill a country if we are not careful.

This government has put in place that our number one priority is economic diversification’’, he said.

Awolowo said that NEPC is the apex agency for the promotion of non-oil products in Nigeria.

“So, we have come up with this zero oil plan which we are getting the stakeholders’ buy-in all over, and which our minister will formally come and present to Mr President.’’

According to him, the plan is to scale up production on many of the products, agricultural products and petrochemical products, that Nigeria has comparative advantage and take them out to the world and trade internationally.

“We are looking at sectors; the minimum sector we a looking at targeting is $20 billion; so if a product is trading below that, we are not interested in it.

That is our zero-oil plan and let’s target and take Nigerian products to the world, to the international markets, so that we can earn foreign exchange.

We are looking at scaling up our non-oil exports to almost $30 billion by 2025. So the zero oil plan is what we must sit down, what we must do, for example, on petrochemical products.

We are looking at scaling up production to almost some 10 million metric tons of petrochemical products.

We can do that. Why? We are a petrol economy. The by-products of this we are not trading it internationally.

And that is the only way we can get out of this present economic crisis.’’

Awolowo said NEPC was also targeting cocoa production and value addition.

“The powder and everything being traded is a $30 billion market. So we need to first scale up production of cocoa and then we now start processing and then exporting.

Because we are still exporting raw thing, the hubs, we are on 250,000 metric tons. That is nothing.

In all these, we are going to work with the Ministry of Agriculture that has already started the process.

We are now going to give them figures. We are now going to give them the market where they can sell these products too.

We are also going to work with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) to target investments.’’

The NEPC boss said that the country had been the largest recipients of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the last seven years.

“But FDI comes into Nigeria, it is coming into oil and it is coming into trade funds. We are now saying that FDI must come into manufacturing and industry; that is the only way that we get value addition; that is the only way we can create jobs; and this is key.

“The zero oil plan is the solution to Nigeria’s problems.’’

RMAFC Urges FG To Remove Fuel Subsidy Totally

The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has urged the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy because it had become a burden on the nation’s economy.

This is contained in a statement by its Head, Public Relations, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the subsidy had not served the masses as it was supposed to and therefore was not serving its purpose.

“It has become a major fiscal and financial burden to the nation and should therefore be discarded totally since the intended targets, the poor and middle income class, were often denied the benefits.

“The removal will drastically reduce the pressure on the revenue profile of the country just as it will free additional funds for the execution of developmental projects which would have direct bearing on the masses’’, it said.

It also said that the commission was fully organised and mobilised to complement the efforts of the Federal Government in the effective implementation of the 2016 budget.

It said the commission would do so by beefing up revenue generation from diverse revenue sources and ensuring timely remittances by all revenue generating agencies into the federation account for the rapid development of the country.

It also said that the major highlights of the proposed budget by President Muhammadu Buhari were in line with the commission’s mandate of monitoring accruals to and disbursement of revenue from the Federation Account.

It has also been advising the federal and state governments on fiscal efficiency and methods by which their revenue could be increased.

Mohammed in the statement recalled that beyond mobilizing revenue from traditional sources namely oil and gas and the non-oil sector, RMAFC had in the last two years been effectively engaged in promoting economic diversification through advocacy and mass mobilization campaign.

This, he said was aimed at boosting the revenue base of the nation and reducing overdependence on oil revenue by states and local governments despite the abundance of human and natural resources in the country which is the bane of economic development.

The Commission, according to the statement, would continue to engage critical stakeholders to devise strategies of reducing revenue leakages to the barest minimum.

FG To Develop National Transportation Masterplan, Says Amaechi

The Federal Government on Wednesday said it was in the process of developing a national transportation master plan that would help in diversifying the nation’s economy.

The Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed this while briefing newsmen after concluding the inspection of ongoing projects and facilities at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Amaechi was accompanied on the visit by the Minister of State for Aviation, Capt. Hadi Sirika and other top officials of the ministry.

The facilities inspected by the ministers include the new terminal building at MMIA under construction, General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and the perimeter fencing around the airport.

They also inspected facilities at the control tower, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) site.

Other areas visited were Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCOL) and the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO).

“The government of President Muhammadu Buhari is in the process of developing a national transportation master plan that will be implemented as a fulfillment one of his campaign promises to diversify the national economy while improving non-oil sector revenues.

“While reducing dependence on oil revenues, it will also develop the rural economy, reduce unemployment and urban drift,” Amaechi said.

He said that the transportation sector held the key to any economy and formed the basis of all socio-economic interactions, adding that Nigeria was suffering the bane of inadequate transportation.

According to him, the contribution of the transport sector to the Gross National Product, which is only 1.41 per cent, is unacceptable.

The minister said: “For a sector that plays a major role in the nation’s development, there is an urgent need to exploit the opportunities that abound within the sector to improve its contribution to the national economy.

“Countries like South Korea and Singapore have built their economies around a vibrant transportation sector.

“Although Nigeria is blessed with multiple modes of transportation that is the envy of many, these potentials have largely remained untapped.

“Our air transport and railways sub-sectors hold the key to unlocking the vast potential in our cities and rural areas.

The Buhari administration is determined to fully exploit the potential in the transportation sector.”

He said that the government, as a first step, would pursue the enactment of legislation that would open up the sector to new investments that would lead to economic prosperity.

Amaechi said among the bills ready for legislative action was the National Transport Commission Bill – an act to provide for the establishment of a National Transport Commission as an independent multi-modal economic regulator and other related matters.

He said the government was determined to revamp the railway sector with a view to enhancing national integration by encouraging mass transit of passengers and goods between and across the geographical regions of the country.

“The immediate impact will be the reduction of haulage of heavy cargoes by roads thus reducing road damage and increasing the life span of roads.

“The movement of petroleum products by rail will be re-introduced in 2016. As you are aware, we have commenced and almost completed the narrow gauge rehabilitation which will be retained for the movement of cargoes.

“At the same time, massive investments into the standard gauge to link most parts of the country with faster trains for passenger movements have begun.

“In 2016, we hope to complete work on the Abuja-Kaduna railway line as Mr. President is highly committed to it.

“Work will start in earnest on the standard gauge on the following routes: Calabar-Lagos line, which will transverse the following towns and cities: Obudu Cattle Ranch-Calabar-Uyo-Aba-PH- Yenagoa-Otuoke-Yenagoa-Ughelli-Sapele-Benin-Agbor-Asaba-Onitsha-Benin-Ijebu Ode-Ore-Sagamu-Lagos Seaports; and the Lagos-Kano: Lagos-Ibadan-Ilorin-Minna-Kaduna-Kano.”

According to him, the construction of new lines and rehabilitation of old railway lines will generate over 250,000 direct jobs and more indirect jobs, while having multiplier effect on economic activities.

Amaechi further disclosed that the ongoing airports remodeling projects at Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt would be concluded in 2016.

“The new terminal in Lagos will generate additional 15 million passengers annually, making a total of 30 million passengers yearly nationwide.

“The medium and long term plans will require significant investments to upgrade and expand infrastructures to meet current and future requirements.

“As a result of limited resources for capital projects development, government is exploring the possibility of private sector participation to towards the realisation of the industry’s potentials,” he said.

Amaechi also reiterated the need for the regulatory agencies to ensure the required safety standards at all times, stressing that the government would continue to invest in providing critical safety facilities.

On the maritime sector, he said government would implement policies that encourage private sector participation and investments towards diversification and growth of the nation’s economy.

“Government will streamline all the agencies in the maritime sector for a more effective and efficient performance to meet the expectations of all stakeholders,” he said.

On his part, Sirika said the ministry would soon meet with airline operators in the country to address the challenges facing the industry.

One Million Forced Out Of School By Boko Haram War – UN

An estimated one million children have been forced out of school as a result of violent attacks by Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria and its neighbouring countries, a new UNICEF report said on Tuesday.

The ongoing violence has led to the closure of more than 2,000 schools in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon, the agency said. Hundreds of others have been attacked, looted or burned by Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates to “Western education is forbidden”.

“The conflict has been a huge blow for education in the region, and violence has kept many children out of the classroom for more than a year, putting them at risk of dropping out of school altogether,” said Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF’s West and Central Africa regional director.

Fontaine said the “staggering” figure of one million children out of school increased the risks of them being “abused, abducted and recruited by armed groups”. How sad.

Checkout An Artists Incredible And Scary Images Of How The World Might End

Artist Steve McGhee has created apocalyptic images that seem to cover every possible way the world might end.

They include planes crashing down on New York City, blackholes opening up in Sydney Harbour and a large oil spill off the coast of France. Mr McGhee, from London, Ontario, believes his work could be influenced by the fact he watches far too many disaster movies. He said:

‘I guess it’s too many disaster movies. That and the fact that I’m fascinated by things we, as human beings, have little or no control over.Disasters happen every day, all around the world. We just hear about the more fantastical ones the media focuses on.’Every day someone, somewhere, is involved in a life-altering disaster. It doesn’t have to be a 300-foot wave crashing into a skyscraper.’

Mr McGhee uses various photography manipulation techniques to create his dramatic scenes.

He added:

‘The reaction is great. I get lots of complimentary emails, and I really appreciate those. My work reflects human error in some cases, and just the bad luck and sheer terror of the human experience in others.

‘Some people like it. Some not so much. My work is in no way intended to glorify or condone acts of terrorism or celebrate the loss of millions of souls who have perished in past events.

‘Rather it is a commentary on the frailty of human existence and made to honor the loved ones left behind to deal with their unbearable loss.’

Man With ‘F–K Cops,’ Horns & Nazi Symbol Tattooed On Face Is Arrested For Robbery

Police officers who arrested this man found something worse than guilt was written all over his face. Paul Wayne Terry, 27, has a clumsy looking tattoo which reads “f*** cops” on his forehead.

And to make him look even less law abiding, the Oklahoma man added to his facial inkings- two large devil horns, Nazi SS lightning bolts below his eye and a lipsticked kiss on his cheek.

It is alleged he and 30-year-old girlfriend Sonja Marie Moro broke into the home of her ex-boyfriend and robbed him of his wallet at knifepoint. It is also claimed that Moro begged for more cash but the pair ran away when the victim said he was going to call the police.

They were arrested by US cops on Saturday and officers noted his “distinctive facial tattoos”.

Terry has previously been convicted of domestic assault and battery, malicious injury to property and interfering with an emergency telephone call.

Rihanna Is One Of The Reasons Rita Ora Is Suing Jay Z’s Roc Nation Label

Rita Ora’s decision to sue Jay Z’s Roc Nation record label was reportedly sparked by her feud with Rihanna,The Sun reports.
It’s alleged Rihanna, who signed to Def Jam in 2005 when Jay Z was President before later moving to Roc Nation, played a part in Rita not getting treated as a priority at the company.
Rita also reportedly found out Rihanna had been offered all the hit tracks before she was, even though
she’s still yet to make a follow-up to her 2012 debut.

This was said to be the final straw for the star who is now suing the rapper’s Roc Nation label, which also has the likes of her ex Calvin Harris on their roster…

“Rihanna has never liked Rita and has been using her power at Roc Nation accordingly. This is the main reason the label’s execs have been uninterested in putting effort into promoting Rita,” a source told The Sun.
“Songs that might be submitted to her are automatically given to Rihanna, who may then hold them for months before deciding she doesn’t want them. The fact that Rita’s ex Calvin Harris is on their management books hasn’t helped either.

The source also said the label didn’t stop the millionaire DJ when he reportedly banned her from using songs he had produced for her album following their break up.

When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist. As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives. Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company,” it said.

Miss Colombia Offered $1Million To Star In Porn Movie

Miss Colombia could become the biggest thing in beauty pageants since Vanessa Williams … if Steve Hirsch, the boss of porn entertainment company Vivid Entertainment  has his way

In a letter published by TMZ, Steve Hirsch writes to Ariadna Gutierrez on Tuesday offering up $1 million.

He made his case with Vanessa Williams, another famous pageant queen, writing, “The only name that most people remember is Vanessa Williams,” adding the reason for her rise to fame was nude pics
in Penthouse.

Hirsch goes on with his pitch … “Celebrity sex tapes we have distributed have enhanced the careers of stars such as Kim Kardashian, Kendra Wilkinson, Pamela Anderson and many others.”

And Hirsch is willing to give Ariadna wide berth, saying, “You will pick your partners, the type of sex you want to have and how many movies you ultimately appear in.”

And Hirsch put a cherry on top by saying he would “commission the making of the first Vivid Girl Crown for you and we believe it will be grander than anything Miss Philippines will ever wear.”

Until he met his untimely death Monday at the South West Zonal centre, Giwa was among the Grade One Referees who took part in the Fitness Test expected of Referees willing to take part in activities of the NRA this coming season. After completing the 12 Laps of the High Intensity Test, Giwa reportedly lost consciousness.

The late referee from Epe Referees Society of the Lagos State Referees Council was immediately besieged by the standby medical team who rushed to the hospital. However, he was unable to survive.

Suffice it to note that before participation in the physical fitness test, an annual exercise organised by the Nigerian Football Federation in conjunction with the NRA, participants are expected to undergo medicals to ascertain their ability to be part of the exercise.”

NRA President, Azeez Tade who was shocked by the sad development, has on behalf of the
Referees’ body extended sympathy messages to the family of the deceased, Epe Referees Society
and Lagos State Council over the death of Giwa, stating that NRA has again lost a budding who
like others were in Ibadan to undertake the Fitness Test.

Tade stated that measures were put in place to check such occurrence while asking for prayers
for the soul of the departed.

Zaria Killings: Human Right Watch Says Over 300 Killed, Buried By Army

The killing of hundreds of Shia Muslim members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), by Nigerian army soldiers from December 12 to 14, 2015, appears to have been wholly unjustified, Human Rights Watch said today.

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the government should be sufficiently independent and impartial to hold those responsible to account.

Human Rights Watch interviewed 16 witnesses to the killings and five others, including local authorities, who said that Nigerian army soldiers fired on Shia Muslim members of the group at three locations in Zaria, in northern Nigeria.

The army said its confrontation with the Shia sect members who had erected a makeshift roadblock near a mosque resulted from an assassination attempt on the army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, whose convoy was passing by. In an internal military document seen by Human Rights Watch, the army said protesters appeared to be taking up positions near the back of the convoy.

“The Nigerian military’s version of events does not stack up,” said Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “It is almost impossible to see how a roadblock by angry young men could justify the killings of hundreds of people. At best it was a brutal overreaction and at worst it was a planned attack on the minority Shia group.”

The army carried out attacks at the Hussainniya Baqiyyatullah mosque and religious center, at the home of the Shiite leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Al Zakzaky, in the Gyellesu neighborhood and at the sect’s burial ground, Daral-Rahma, over the course of two days.

At least 300 Shia sect members, and likely many more, were killed and hundreds more injured, according to witnesses in at least two of the sites and a hospital source.

Soldiers quickly buried the bodies in mass graves without family members’ permission, making it difficult to determine an accurate death toll.

Amaechi Orders FAAN To Erect Befitting Headquarters

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday directed the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to erect an appropriate and befitting headquarters within the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for itself.

Mr. Amaechi, accompanied by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, and some key management staff of the agency, gave the directive at the FAAN’s headquarters. He gave the order shortly before embarking on a tour of the airport’s facilities. He said the present FAAN’s headquarters was not a befitting office.

Mr. Amaechi, who expressed his discomfort with what he observed, wondered why FAAN, despite its huge revenue-profile, could not build a befitting office for itself since its establishment.

He said that safety was not negotiable and that it should not be toyed with, adding that after safety, the next thing that should be discussed and uppermost to FAAN should be an appropriate office space.

“From what I have observed, this is not a befitting edifice and office that should house FAAN workers. Once we have discussed safety, the next thing should be the construction of new FAAN office,” he said.

Porn Star Offers To Teach Sex In Italian Schools

Porn star Rocco Siffredi, known as the “Italian stallion”, has launched a petition demanding sex education become mandatory in Italy’s schools and offered himself up as a teacher.

“I wanted to launch this appeal because sex is a magnificent thing,” he wrote on the website that began collecting signatures on Tuesday.

“I put forth my name and my experience, I make myself fully available to go into Italian schools and personally promote this initiative,” the 51-year-old added.

Despite efforts stretching back over a century and dozens of legislative proposals, sex education is not part of the curriculum in Italy’s schools.

The petition on change.org, addressed to Italian Education Minister Stefania Giannini, had gathered some 21,600 supporters by Wednesday.

“Pornography should be entertainment, but due to lacking alternatives, it has become a means to learn, especially for young people,” he said.

“I have been doing my work for 30 years and I have acquired enough experience to guarantee that what I do is not sex education,” he added.

Nigerians Abroad Sent $21 Billion Home In 2015

With about $21 billion sent home by Nigerians in diaspora in 2015, the country is the sixth largest receiver of remittances in the world, the Migration of Remittance Factbook 2016 has shown.

The country is also by far the largest receiver of remittances in sub-Saharan Africa, receiving a total of $34.8 billion this year.

The report, which relied on data gathered from January to December 1, 2015, was compiled by the Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development with support from the World Bank, German, Swedish and Swiss governments.

An analysis of the report also shows that the United States and the United Kingdom are by far the most lucrative destinations for Nigerian migrants. Nigerians at home received a total of $9.4 billion ($5.7 billion from the US and $3.7 billion from the UK) from both countries in 2015.

According to the report, the U.S. is the top remittance-sending country in the world. A total of $56.3 billion was sent out of the US to other parts of the world. The second largest remittance-sending country is Saudi Arabia with $36.9 billion followed by Russia ($32.6 billion), Switzerland ($24.7billion) and Germany ($20.8 billion).

The report also shows that the cost of sending money within Africa is the second most expensive in the world (the most expensive being the cost of sending money between Australia to the South Pacific country of Vanuatu).

For every $200 remitted from South Africa to Zambia, senders are charged 19 per cent. The cost is 17.4 per cent to send the same amount from South Africa- Botswana and 17.3 per cent from Tanzania to Uganda.

In comparison, it cost just 0.6 per cent to send the same amount of money from Saudi Arabia to Nepal and 3.1 per cent from the United Arab Emirate to anywhere in the world.

We Have Met December Deadline Against Boko Haram- Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said on Wednesday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.
President Mohammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won. I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hotbed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.

“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”

He said the military presence could be felt ”every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest. They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Mr. Mohammed, however, said that although there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature of insurgency globally.Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory. Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”

He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to support the military in the fight against terrorism in the country, saying that the military had availed itself creditably.

Saudi King, Abdulaziz Salman, whose country is the world’s top oil exporter, pledged on Wednesday to diversify the economy in a bid to shore up national finances dented by a slide in crude oil prices.

“The kingdom is keen to implement programmes to diversify income resources and reduce reliance on oil as the main source of income,” Salman said in a statement.
Salman, who ascended to the throne in 2015, said his country had maintained economic growth despite global economic fluctuations.

“This growth is due to balanced and wise economic policies aimed at keeping a balance between resources and spending,” he added.

Saudi Arabia’s finances are under pressure resulting from the plunge in oil prices.

The regional economic heavyweight relies on oil revenues to finance welfare programmes for its citizens and military involvement in Yemen and Syria.
