Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sues Rita Ora

Jay Z’s record label is suing singer Rita Ora for £1.6m ($2.4m) for breaking her contract and failing to produce promised albums.

The civil lawsuit has been filed in New York just six weeks after the British star sued Roc Nation in Los Angeles.

Ora claims she was pushed aside by executives and that the agreement she signed in 2008 at the age of 18 violated California law.

The X Factor judge has only released one album with the label, her self-titled debut in 2012.

Roc Nation claims it has spent $2.4m on her and has “tirelessly promoted [her] career, investing millions of dollars in marketing, recording and other costs, which was instrumental in guiding Ms Ora to her current level of success and fame”.

However, a second album has failed to materialise despite Ora reportedly signing a five-album deal.

Page Six in the New York Post quoted Ora’s lawyer, Howard King, who said: “Jay Z has personally and graciously promised Rita complete freedom from Roc Nation, the details of which are now being finalised.

“We believe that Roc Nation’s distributor, Sony Music, has required Roc Nation to file this action to preserve whatever rights Sony might have pending resolution.”

Rita Ora’s decision to sue Jay Z’s Roc Nation record label was reportedly sparked by her feud with Rihanna,The Sun reports.
It’s alleged Rihanna, who signed to Def Jam in 2005 when Jay Z was President before later moving to Roc Nation, played a part in Rita not getting treated as a priority at the company.
Rita also reportedly found out Rihanna had been offered all the hit tracks before she was, even though
she’s still yet to make a follow-up to her 2012 debut.

This was said to be the final straw for the star who is now suing the rapper’s Roc Nation label, which also has the likes of her ex Calvin Harris on their roster…

“Rihanna has never liked Rita and has been using her power at Roc Nation accordingly. This is the main reason the label’s execs have been uninterested in putting effort into promoting Rita,” a source told The Sun.
“Songs that might be submitted to her are automatically given to Rihanna, who may then hold them for months before deciding she doesn’t want them. The fact that Rita’s ex Calvin Harris is on their management books hasn’t helped either.

The source also said the label didn’t stop the millionaire DJ when he reportedly banned her from using songs he had produced for her album following their break up.

Rita Ora wants out of her contract with Jay Z’s Roc Nation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In a new lawsuit filed on Thursday, Rita alleges her career has suffered and she’s been forced to pay for promotional events out of her own pocket, claiming the recording company’s diversification into other fields has weakened their music interests.

The lawsuit states:

“When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist…As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives. Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”

Even Beyonce and Jay Z go through rough patches in their relationship. An author who is writing an unauthorized biography about Bey’s life is claiming that she and her husband separated for a year when there were rumors that Jay cheated on her with Rihanna!

Beyonce, 34, and Jay Z, 45, have been through their fair share of break up and separation rumors, but this one is scandalous! In an authorized biography about the 34-year-old’s life, the author, J Randy Taraborrelli, 59, wrote that the powerful music couple reportedly went their separate ways for about a year when it was rumored that Rihanna, 27, and Jay Z were hooking up. The break up reportedly happened when Rihanna released “Pon De Replay” in 2005, roughly a year after Jay first received a demo of that track. It was then that the cheating rumors started. “Beyonce didn’t know what to make of this, and it actually ended up breaking them up for a time,” J Randy told Entertainment Tonight of the alleged split on Oct. 22. “They spent maybe a year apart from each other because Beyonce just wasn’t sure what to make of the situation with Rihanna.” But, the 34-year-old got over the rumored infidelity because she went on to marry the music mogul in 2008 and have a child with him.

The 59-year-old writer even added that the two popstars are on good terms. “It’s safe to say that Rihanna and Beyonce are friends,” J Randy said. Apparently the rumors of Jay and Rihanna’s affair was reportedly made and spread to the media by publicists to boot the 27-year-old singer’s profile. Even though this whole incident happened years ago, the author believes that Rihanna’s presence is the source of some of the couple’s fights. That includes the brawl between Jay and Beyonce’s younger sister, Solange, 29, at the Met Gala in 2014. 

J Randy claims he spoke to some people close to the “XO” singer and revealed the brawl happened because Jay wanted to go to Rihanna’s Met Gala after party but she refused to. “It was a whispered married couple’s argument that would have gone by completely unnoticed had Solange not overheard it,” he said. “Solange has always been Beyoncé’s biggest protector.” But, even the award winning author claims he’s not sure that’s what caused the fight. “I think it’s safe to say the only people who know for sure what happened are Bey, Jay, Solange, and the bodyguard who were in the elevator,” J Randy said. Well, what can we say? Sometimes crazy things happen when there’s a billion dollars in an elevator.

And the busy rap mogul and entrepreneur – who is rumoured to be expecting his second child with wife Beyonce – was spotted leaving a meeting with one of his clients in New York on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old star, who already shares three-year-old daughter Blue Ivy with his Crazy In Love singer spouse, looked relaxed as he strolled out of a Manhattan office building.

Dressed in all black, the hip-hop star sported jeans, a sweater and luxurious black coat with fur collar and lapels.

On his feet were some statement bright white trainers.

Ahead of the 99 Problems hit maker was New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith who was seen exiting the building minutes earlier with paperwork in hand.

Geno, 24, was one of the first athletes to sign to Jay Z’s agency Roc Nation Sports which he launched in 2013.
