Adetunji said that the number of injured persons had yet to be ascertained.

“I received a call at about 22:00hours on Sunday that there was a crash on Ngurore Bridge on Yola-Numan Highway.

“On arrival at the scene, we discovered that it was a truck carrying cows and passengers that lost control and fell into the drying river,” the commander told NAN.

According to him, six dead bodies were deposited at the Federal Medical Centre and nine at the Specialists Hospital.

He advised motorists to shun night driving as well as avoid transporting humans and animals in the same vehicle.

Arik fails to pay compensation to passengers for baggage delay

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says Arik Air has not compensated its passengers whose bags were delayed on the London-Lagos route in December.

According to Sam Adurogboye, spokesman of NCAA, Arik has also not paid the N6 million fine imposed on the airline for contravening the provisions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs).

The NCAA had on December 27 ordered Arik Air to pay the sum for violating part 19.7.2 and 19.17.2.1 (ii) of the Nig.CARs 2015.

The NCAA also ordered the airline to pay its passengers, whose baggage were delayed on the London-Lagos route between December 2 and December 4, $150 each as compensation.

It directed that the N6 million fine must be paid within seven days of receipt of the letter, while the $150 compensation to the passengers must be made within 30 days.

Adurogboye told NAN that the airline had not complied with the sanctions.

“The NCAA has done its part in sanctioning the airline in accordance with international civil aviation rules and regulations,” he said.

“However, Arik Air has a right to appeal against the sanctions and I am sure that they have done that and we have to wait until the determination of the appeal before taking any further action.”

Adurogboye also said that no formal complaint had been made to the NCAA concerning the recent incident involving some aggrieved passengers and a staff of Arik Air at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

According to him, the NCAA is only concerned with regulating civil aviation and has no security outfit to prevent such incidents.

“We only appeal to aggrieved passengers not to take the law into their own hands,” he said

“There are various security organisations at the airport who are responsible for that but the duty of the NCAA remains that of air safety.”

VIDEO: Angry Passengers beat up Arik Air Staff over 10-hour flight delay

It has not been the best of times for Nigeria’s largest commercial airline, Arik Air in the last couple of months.

Passengers have taken to social media to call out the carrier for poor customer service and delayed flights.

Today, the anger got physical, as passengers assaulted an official of the airline, who was reportedly fighting with another passenger.

Reports filtering in has it that security agents attached to the airport have swooped in to return clam to the trouble spot.

A Twitter user shared the following video:

UPDATE: All passengers on-board released from hijacked Libyan plane

All passengers have been released from a hijacked Libyan plane in Malta, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said on Friday.

There were 111 passengers and seven crew members on board the Afriqiyah Airways A320 jet that was on an internal flight from Sebha to Tripoli in Libya.

The plane was forced to divert to the Mediterranean island of Malta after at least one hijacker threatened to blow the plane up with a hand grenade.

Earlier, women and children were released.

The BBC reported that the hijackers have been arrested.

They are believed to be supporters of the late former leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

Mr. Muscat had said that his country’s security forces were standing by.

He said on Twitter that the passengers list included 82 men, 28 women and one baby.

The BBC report said the hijackers surrendered after most to the passengers had been released. The seven-member crew are also believed to be have released afterwards.

Arik Air passengers stranded nationwide as shutdown by protesting workers intesifies.

Aviation unions on Tuesday shut down the operations of Arik Air, leaving hundreds of the airline’s passengers stranded across the country.

The strike was embarked upon by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers(NAAPE).

The unions embarked on the joint strike following the airline’s failure to pay seven months salary arrears and other alleged anti-labour practices.

The unions said the industrial action would continue indefinitely until their demands are met by the management of Arik Air.

They shut down Arik Air’s flight operations at both the local and international wings of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos and also barricaded the airline’s corporate headquarters within the airport premises.

As early as 6:00 a.m, the aggrieved workers stormed the airport chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with various inscriptions, denouncing the actions of Arik Air’s management.

Addressing the protesters, Mr Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary, NUATE, said the unions decided to ground Arik Air for safety reasons.

Abioye said : “Arik Air has refused to pay workers salaries for seven months and we know that a disgruntled worker is an accident waiting to happen.

“The airline has been defaulting in taxes and other statutory deductions from workers remunerations.

“The management has refused to allow total unionisation of its employees, in compliance with extant labour laws and with respect to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He also demanded for the immediate reinstatement of five of the airline’s employees who were sacked for their involvement in unionism.

Abioye further alleged that Arik Air was owing about N13 billion and N6 billion to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), respectively.

According to him, the airline was also indebted to its aviation fuel suppliers and ground handlers and should therefore be declared insolvent by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Also speaking, Mr Frances Akinjole, General Secretary, ATSSSAN, said the unions were prepared to embark on the strike for as long as possible.

“Things cannot be business as usual for Arik. A pilot who is disgruntled can crash an aircraft deliberately. An engineer who is being owed salaries can sabotage the aircraft.

“So we need to ground Arik Air until the management shows that they are responsible,” Akinjole added.

Some of Arik Air’s passengers at the General Aviation Terminal resorted to changing their travel plans as there was no staff to attend to them at the airline’s counter.

One of the passengers, Ms Tomisin Olukare, said she bought a one-way ticket from Lagos to Abuja at N42, 000 three days ago.

“I came this morning and there is nobody to attend to me and my flight is supposed to leave by 10:00 a.m., so I am really confused,” she said.

Another passenger, Mrs Chika Emmanuel, said an agent assisted her in buying an Air Peace ticket for Abuja immediately she sensed that there was going to be a disruption on Arik Air operations.

Emmanuel said she would be demanding for a refund of her ticket from Arik Air when she returns from her trip.

When contacted, the Corporate Communications Manager of Arik Air, Mr Ola Adebanji, said the airline would soon issue a statement explaining their position on the situation.

Check out these new set of rules for Uber users.

Uber has released a new set of guidelines and rules that riders must adhere to if they want to continue to use the taxi service.

Some of the rules, which mostly target the riders, also apply to the drivers.

“It’s a universal truth we were all taught by our parents. And something that’s important here at Uber,” an Uber news release said.

“That’s because whether you’re a passenger trying to get from A to B—or a driver wanting to earn money—we want everyone to enjoy the ride.”

Breaking any of these rules could get you banned from using Uber ever again.

Damaging drivers’ or other passengers’ property

Damaging the car, breaking or vandalising a phone, intentionally spilling food or drink, smoking, or vomiting due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Physical contact with the driver or fellow riders

As our community guidelines make clear, you shouldn’t touch or flirt with other people in the car. As a reminder, Uber has a no sex rule.

That’s no sexual conduct with drivers or fellow riders, no matter what. And you should never hit or otherwise hurt a driver or fellow passenger.

Use of inappropriate and abusive language or gestures

Asking overly personal questions, using verbal threats, and making comments or gestures that are aggressive, sexual, discriminatory, or disrespectful.

Unwanted contact with the driver or fellow passenger after the trip is over

Texting, calling or visiting someone in person after a ride has been completed.

Remember, in most countries, you can call and text your driver directly from the Uber app without ever having to share your personal phone number.

This means that your phone number stays anonymous and is never given to the driver.

Breaking the local law while using Uber

Bringing open containers of alcohol or drugs into the car; traveling in large groups that exceed the number of seat belts in the car; asking drivers to break local traffic laws such as speed limits; or using Uber to commit a crime, including drug and human trafficking or the sexual exploitation of children.

Fresh Scandal Hits Arik Air As Passengers Are Left Stranded at New York’s JFK Airport

Hundreds of passengers have been left stranded at the New York John F. Kennedy International airport on Thursday as economic crisis forces distruptions in Arik Ariline’s operations abroad.

The passengers created a ruckus at the airport as Arik’s W3 108 New York-Lagos flight, which was to depart at 11.45am (5.45pm) local time in Nigeria, was initially delayed and then cancelled by the airline without giving any information to the passengers for almost 6 hours.

Nearly 20 New York Port Authority police officers were deployed to quell disturbances that nearly flared into violence at the Arik’s airline ticket counter.  Dozens of irate passengers were forced to wait for up to 10 hours due to a series of delays that went largely unexplained by the carrier. Some passengers claimed to have flown into New York from other states as early as 7am.

Waiting passengers said they were given no food or temporary accommodation as compensation. Some passengers were seen hurling insults at anyone spotted wearing Arik Airline uniform.

The Christmas season is the perennial headache for airlines anywhere — quickly herding hundreds of passengers onboard, getting them out of the aisles, into their safety belts and making sure that the plane takes off for its destination on time and getting their luggage. But Arik  airline shocking record in this regard has led to a new worry.

With the delays piling up and the airline struggling to deal with the consequences, irate travelers are turning aggressive and protests are not uncommon at the counter. Angry passengers have in recent weeks reportedly smashed up check-in desks in Lagos, Enugu, New York, London and Abuja.

According to  Per Second News report, some airports have simply stopped announcing the airline’s delays over the PA system to avoid antagonizing delayed travelers.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Tuesday ordered the airline to pay compensation to affected passengers on board those flights whose luggage were delayed by the carrier for almost a week now.

Arik to face Consumer Protection Council over alleged shoddy treatment of passengers

The Consumer Protection Council, CPC, has summoned the management of Arik Airline to appear before it.

The summon followed complaints of alleged ill-treatment by passengers of a recent London-Abuja Arik flight. It is to allow the management of the airline provide facts relating to the allegations, the CPC said in a statement on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that Arik Air and no fewer than 40 aggrieved passengers have been at loggerheads over the non-arrival of their baggage, five days after their flight landed in Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the aggrieved passengers on Tuesday disrupted the airline’s operations and also allegedly damaged its check-in counter at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

Consequently, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, on Wednesday directed Arik Air to return all delayed baggage of the passengers within 24 hours and compensate the affected passengers with $150 each for their troubles.

In his reaction, the airline’s Associate Vice President, Ground Operations Department, Femi Kukoyi, apologised to the passengers.

While assuring them that an aircraft was en-route Lagos from London and would arrive with about 300 bags by 7 p.m., Mr. Kukoyi said that the remaining would be brought in by another of its aircraft by 5 a.m. on Thursday.

In its Wednesday statement, the Consumer Protection Council disclosed that those summoned to appear before it on December 19 are the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Ikhide; the Chief Operating Officer, Conor Prendergast; and the Managing Director, Chris Ndulue.

“The said passengers, many of whom had connecting flights to Cameroon, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Ibadan could not continue their journeys as a result of the non-arrival of their luggage from London, while some passengers on the said flights could not have access to personal supplies, baby food or medication,” the statement said.

It added that “Arik Air Ltd did not provide the passengers with temporary accommodation for transit; neither was there any customer service desk to assist the passengers in resolving their individual complaints.”

The council however disclosed that it had issued the summons in line with Sections 8, 15 and 18 of its enabling Act.

It would be recalled that on December 25 and 31, 2015 as well as January 9, 2016, Turkish Airlines had similar experience with its Flight 623 from Istanbul to Abuja. It, however, refused to respond to the Council’s summons and the ultimatum of the Attorney General of the Federation, leading to criminal prosecution of the airline and two of its principal officers for alleged criminal violation of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) Act.

The Turkish Air prosecution has been fixed for February 9, 2017 for hearing.

REPORT: Uber can now track your location even after your ride is over

Uber has started tracking users for five minutes before and after exiting their ride, the company recently announced in its update.

It may not be as intense as CIA-level spying, but users aren’t very comfortable with the update.

Prior to this latest update, Uber only collected location information during a passenger’s trip and only while the app was running in the foreground. No data was collected after the drop-off.

Uber claims the upgrade will help end the frustration experienced when drivers and passengers can’t locate each other.

Explaining the update on its website, Uber said: “Uber collects your location data from the time of trip request through five minutes after the trip ends, including when the app is in the background.”

Uber, however, explained how to turn off the feature:

  • On Android: Settings ? Apps ? Uber ? scroll to “Permission” ? toggle “Location”
  • On Android Lollipop (5.1) and earlier: Settings ? Location ? toggle Off
  • On iOS: Settings ? Privacy ? Location Services ? Uber ? choose “Never”

Trapped Passengers Rescued From French Alps Cable Cars

Dozens of people trapped overnight in cable cars dangling at 12,000 feet in the French Alps have been rescued safely, officials said Friday.

At least three children and their families were among 33 passengers forced to spend the night in the cabins after weather conditions and the onset of darkness meant the operation to bring them down was halted late Thursday.
The passengers’ ordeal began at about 4:30 p.m. local time Thursday when two cables crossed over each other, a local government official told CNN.
The cable cars became stuck in position, leaving 110 people trapped. French and Italian helicopters were called in, and rescue teams managed to get 65 of them to safety.
Hours later, workers were able to bring down 12 more passengers, who walked to a connecting cable car that took them to the Italian town of Courmayeur.
But Clement Delisle was among those who had to spend more than 12 hours above the mountain valley. He said he and his friends and family had been on the cable car for about 10 minutes when it stopped unexpectedly near l’Aiguille du Midi.
“After two hours, we started getting worried,” he told CNN. “We called and they told us the helicopters were on their way as there was an issue with the wires.”
“Right as the helicopters were about to evacuate us, a cloud of fog started setting in. So the helicopter skipped us, and when they finally circled back … it was nighttime and they could no longer evacuate us.”

Qatar Airways Makes Emergency Landing As Engine Bursts Into Flames Midair

A PLANE was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines burst into flames mid-air.

The Qatari Airways aircraft had been en route to Doha from Istanbul when it experienced problems. Initial reports suggest the flight QR240 caught fire during take-off on Thursday just after midday, local time. The Airbus 300 was forced to make an emergency landing, returning to Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, in Turkey.

Reports claim there was a explosion as the plane was taking off, forcing the pilot to quickly return to the airport. Video shot from the ground shows sparks flying from the left engine. Damage has been reported to the blades of the engine.

A statement from the Gulf carrier said: “Today’s QR240 from Istanbul Ataturk Airport to Doha has returned to Istanbul and has landed safely.

The passengers have disembarked as normal. The pilot followed all QR safety procedures.”

But an airport official has countered local media reports of a fire, and claimed the plane’s landing gear failed to retract after take-off.

They could not confirm whether a fire had broken out despite smoke spotted on footage.

Dana Air Pilots Go On Strike, Passengers Stranded

Dana Air pilots have gone on strike in protest of the non-payment of their salaries, grounding the airline’s operations and leaving hundreds of passengers stranded nationwide.

“The strike started this morning and passengers that were supposed to travel this morning are stranded,” a source at the airport said.

According to the source, the airline had continued to sell tickets to passengers earlier today in the hope that the dispute would be resolved.

It was gathered that the airline has, however, started making refunds with some passengers booking flights with other airlines.

Union Stops Arik Passengers From Entering Abuja Airport Hall

Over 200 passengers of Arik Air were stopped from entering the departure hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Wednesday by angry aviation union members.

The passengers were directed to converge at the crowded ticketing counter of the airline despite passionate pleas by some of the travellers to the unionists.

Some of the angry union members stationed themselves at the way leading to the departure hall for outbound passengers, they checked the tickets of travellers who made their way to the departure hall and those with Arik Air tickets were turned back.

Our correspondent gathered that the union members arrived at the airport early and commenced the exercise of denying Arik Air passengers entry to the departure hall as early as 6.30am on Wednesday.

The situation dragged for several hours, a developmnt that forced the carrier to suspend its flight services on Wednesday.

Most of the affected passengers felt dejected as many of them were seen trying to catch another flight with a different airline, while others left.

“This is painful and I feel dejected already. Must we suffer this much in Nigeria? Can’t unions and businesses in their sphere of operations settle amicably without putting innocent citizens through untold hardship for once in this country? This is sad!,’ were the words of an affected traveller who simply gave his name as Greg.

The unions, it was gathered, were demanding that the airline should clear its about N12.5bn debt owed the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

Similarly, the union members also stopped the carrier from carrying out its operations at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

This was confirmed by the airline’s spokesperson, Mr. Banji Ola, who stated that the FAAN workers’ union on Wednesday morning blocked the operations of Arik Air at the GAT, Lagos.

FG Orders Investigation Into Why Aero Passengers Disembarked Using Ladder

The federal government has directed an immediate investigation into the use of an unauthorized equipment by Aero Contractors Airlines at the conclusion of a charter flight to Bauchi over the weekend .

Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika who directed for an immediate investigation said the incident is inconsistent with Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS).

A statement by spokesman of the aviation ministry said the investigation will determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident with a view to developing and implementing measures that will prevent a reoccurrence of the unsafe and unacceptable procedure that exposed passengers to high risk of serious injury.

He reiterated that if the airline is found culpable, the full weight of sanctions within extant laws and regulations would be applied on it.

The minister assured the traveling public that the ministry of transport in collaboration with Nigerian Civil Aviation  Authority (NCAA) will ensure strict adherence to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations as well as ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices by all operators.

A special charter flight operated by Aero to Bauchi, on Saturday, had problems with unserviceable equipment by the airport management in disembarking about 34 passengers from Abuja.  As a result, the passengers had to use a ladder to disembark.

Man Hilariously Narrates How He Was ‘Maltreated’ By Aero Contractors Staff

Lol, if only everyone can take their pains like this. I mean this is a real story but he still found humour in it. So nice… Please read below…

Me I had sworn that no matter how badly treated I was by a Nigerian Airline I won’t say anything. I will just be quiet and watch them disgrace themselves. So for years, I have been very silent with the rubbish they have been meting out on not only me but millions of Nigerians who unfortunately have to use them. From delayed flights, to outright cancellation.

From bumpy rides in rickety planes that have seen me peeing on myself and screaming Jesusssssssss, to smelly air hostess with dirty armpits who behave as if they are the best things since slice bread , in all these I have kept my peace and not said anything. I did not even talk when the whole Arik crew descended on my friend the Amiable Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and beat him silly simply because he asked why his seat was given out, I didn’t whimper o.

Maybe that is why, today they brought the fight to me. Me,Ajanaku, the Elephant, Aero people try me today. It all started when I got a text last night as usual postponing my morning flight in Abuja from 8.45am to 11.00am. The fact that I had an 11.0clock appointment that I had been chasing for years did not make me talk, the fact that the client had flown in from America and would be early for the meeting after flying for over 13 hours and me who had just 55minutes to fly would be late did not make me talk. So I took it all in my stride and slept off.

In the morning, I took my time and jumped into traffic and the usual Lagos traffic killed me. I arrived at their counter at exactly 10.30 for the flight and one very dirty Aero staff screamed at me with spittle gushing out of her mouth like a volcano erupting and throwing ash everywhere, ‘ we have closed the counter’ she screamed turning her back and showing me a split in her skirts. I smiled believing that this is NIGERIA and this is Ajanaku that I will surmount this challenge. I called out at her and in my smoothest Don Jazzy voice, I pleaded for help. She was livid, looked at me sternly and asked if I did not understand English, that it was over and gleefully told me that the next flight was for 5 o’clock in the evening.

At this time, my cool evaporated and I started begging. I pleaded as if my life depended on it and at this point about 6 of their lowliest paid staff, all with different kinds of body stench descended on me and telling me categorically that I had to leave and come back by 5pm. I begged and begged and begged all to no avail. I even told them that we all voted APC and that the change had come that they should please temper Justice with mercy. This served to only anger them the more as they immediately started mocking me and laughing at me. Guys, the most painful thing in all these, was the fact that they were still checking in other passengers o. Those with huge and plenty luggages where being given VIP treatment while me in all my Gucci Shoes and trousers was left stranded and being advised to either go to another airline the or should start trekking like all these people trekking for Buhari.

At this point someone in authority strolled in and decided to assist and then I knew what my sin was. He asked them to open the system to see if there was more seats, he stared at the system like the tyrant he was, with the power of life and death. He sent a signal to the Pilot, not to dare move that plane until he decided what to do and after staring at the system for what seemed like an eternity gave judgement, I should be upgraded to first class. I thanked him and prayed that God should bless his mistress and that his wife will never catch him, but as he was walking away, his leprous colleagues called him back and told him that I had complained about being delayed for four hours on my last trip and as such I did not see any reason why I could not board after just being late for 30 minutes.

My people, Emperor turned with all the dignity he could muster and gave instant judgement, no more seats and that was final. I stood there looking like a class clown. I could not believe this was happening to me. The circus midgets all immediately burst into imbecilic laughter and stuck out their tongues at me.

Out of frustration, I left them and went to the medview counter, where the Angels there gave me a seat on their 12 noon flight. I thanked them and paid but decided to go back to Aero counter to vent. My people, I for Kuku just go my way o. Na police dey wait for me o. The goons had called Police for me and you know police, na who first report na him get case. The bleached police man demanded for my phone and asked to go through my picture gallery that I had taken pictures of the Aero staff.

That’s how the man went through my phone, enjoyed himself with all the – you know the kind picture that will be there na- took his time and decided which ones he will delete and which ones he will keep and in all these the minions where still laughing and still checked people into a flight they had said was full an hour ago.

I thank God for the NCAA people who came to my assistance. Took me to their office took my complaints and calmed me down. They said they had been receiving series of complaints from harassed and humiliated passengers and will certainly do something this time.

So my people, Aero used to be my favorite airline, but with this kind of harassment and being treated like a thief I have left them and taken my wahala somewherelse. You can be sure, I will not miss their shitty service, I will not miss their cheap onboard flight, I will not miss the unpredictability of their services, I I’ll not miss their rickety planes, I will not miss having to ‘settle’ their poorly paid and under trained staff and I will certainly won’t have to kneel down and beg to be boarded simply because I mistakenly mentioned that if they could delay me for four hours, they should be a little bit more tolerant with my 30minute lateness, even though the flight was still on ground and checking in was still ongoing.

As I write, I am headed to the Airport with my heart in my mouth. One of the goons had threatened to cancel my return ticket and that I will never fly Aero. I asked him if his father was Ibru that he should try it. My people maybe I should join the Trekkers.
