How My Abductors Treated Me– Jonathan’s Foster Father

Uncle and foster father to former president Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Inegite Jonathan, says his abductors treated him well.

The Septuagenarian told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Bayelsa that his abductors gave him a preferential treatment before setting him free.

The victim was abducted by gunmen on February 17 and freed on March 23, after 35 days in captivity.

Jonathan’s foster father added that he was allowed to open his face while others were blind folded.

“I was properly taken care of by the kidnappers. I eat three square meals daily, my drugs was administered to me appropriately by the boys,” he said.

The chief said they even asked other kidnapped victims with him to start paying allegiance to him as the only person that was untouchable in the camp.

He said before they started treating him well, they argued between themselves from his house but on getting to the camp they resolved their issue.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr Asinim Butswat, said details of the release were not available.

Former president Jonathan had told the Police that he would not succumb to the demand for ransom.

Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience, visited the chief shortly after his release.

Jonathan’s Foster Father Regains Freedom

Less than 24 hours after Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Peter Ogunyanwo disclosed that  former president Goodluck Jonathan has vowed not to pay ransom to secure the release of his cousin who also doubles as his foster father, Chief Nitabai Inegite, the 72-year-old has regained his freedom.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Anisim Butswat, who confirmed the release of Inegite said details of his release are still sketchy.

Inegite and one of his nephews, Samuel Okies were kidnapped on February 17 from the residence of the Inegites in Otuoke. Two days after, Okies was found dead with his body floating on Otuoke River.

The kidnappers were said to have reduced their initial ransom from N50 million to N2 million but Jonathan insisted that he was not going to pay.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Police command, Mr Peter Ogunyanwo had disclosed in Yenagoa during the parade of 37 armed robbery and kidnap suspects  the decision by Jonathan not to pay ransom so as to discourage kidnapping.

“On the kidnap of the foster father of former president Gooluck Jonathan, Chief Inegite, I have met several times with the former president and he has insisted that he is not going to pay ransom. The kidnappers have reduced their ransom to about N2million but the former President said he would not pay it. We are on the trail of the kidnappers and we would get them. People should not pay ransom. Just like Governor Henry Seriake Dickson also did not pay ransom for the freedom of his sister, people should be discouraged from paying ransom so that the business of kidnapping would stop,” he said.

Ogunyanwo explained that since assumption of duty in the state, the command has enthroned a robust crime fighting strategy which has culminated in the arrest of 37 suspects in different parts of the state.

While disclosing that criminal elements are devising various ways to beat security network, he said the state Police command is up to the task to combat crime.

Ogunyanwo, who said the Police foiled a kidnap attempt of the newly sworn in chairman of the state Environmental Sanitation Authority, Robert Enogha, urged members of the public to come with useful information that would ensure that criminal elements are not allowed to operate in the state.

He stated that once investigations were completed in most of the  cases, the suspects would be charged to court in line with recommendations from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

EFCC Traces N3bn Transfers To Falae, Fani-Kayode, Others

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has traced N3.145bn transferred to the private accounts of some members of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation.

According to detectives at the EFCC, the money emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria and was transferred to the account of a company, Joint Dimensions Limited, and then sent to various accounts.

Authorities of the anti-graft commission said out of the money, the Director of Publicity of the organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, received N840m.

According to the documents sighted by our correspondent, the money was deposited into Fani-Kayode’s Zenith bank account, Maitama Branch with number 1004735721 on February 19, 2015.

The detectives said a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Olu Falae, received N100m through a company, Marreco Limited, where he is chairman. The fund was credited into the company’s United Bank for Africa Plc account number 1000627022 on March 25, 2014.

According to the documents, N320m was also paid into the bank account of the Goodluck Support Group, an association which played a major role in Jonathan’s campaign.

A former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa, and a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Viola Onwuliri, according to the documents, got N350m in two tranches. The first tranche of N150m was paid into their joint account with Zenith bank on January 13, 2015. The second tranche of N200m was credited into their account with Diamond bank.

A source at the anti-graft agency who pleaded not to be named because he is not authorised to speak said, “The money was paid by the Central Bank of Nigeria into the account of the Ministry of External Affairs Library, from where it was moved into the account of Joint Trust Dimension Nigeria Limited.

“It was from the Joint Dimension’s account with Zenith bank that the money was shared to various individuals and organisations for purposes that are not stated.

“Fani-Kayode was the chief beneficiary of the disbursement as he allegedly received a whooping N840m, paid in three tranches into his Zenith bank, Maitama branch account with number 1004735721.

“The first tranche of payment involving N350m hit the account on February 19, 2015. Another N250m was also paid into the account on February19, 2015 while N240m was similarly credited to the account a month later; precisely, March 19, 2015.

“The balance in this account as of December 31, 2015 was N189, 402.72.”

The detectives added that the Director of Finance of the campaign organisation, Nenadi Usman, also got N36.9m through her Zenith bank account with number 1000158311 on 7, Kachia Road, Kaduna.

Presidential Campaign Coordinator of President Goodluck Jonathan in Anambra State, Chief Okey Ezenwa, who is also the brother-in-law to a former Rivers State Governor, Chief Peter Odili, also got N100m, according to the source.

He added, “But as things stand, the fact that most of the payments were made in the weeks preceding the last presidential elections leaves very little to the imagination. Yet, one knotty question that confronts the investigators is the unknown figure behind Joint Trust Dimension Nigeria Limited and the account where the money was warehoused before being wired to sundry beneficiaries. The shadowy figure could help unravel the mystery shrouding the payments, once the veil is lifted.”

However, Fani-Kayode told our correspondent on the telephone that he never received money from the CBN.

Rather, he said the monies that were spent were received from Usman who was the director of finance of the campaign organisation.

The former Minister of Aviation said he never spent government funds but was told by Usman that the monies were sourced from private donations.

He said, “I served as the director of publicity and I was told to set up an account for the directorate, which I did. I never received money from the CBN but like all the other directors, we received money from the director of finance.

“I was assured that the monies were not public funds but were sourced from private individuals. I never knowingly spent government money all through. The monies were spent specifically on the campaigns. The accounts were audited and we were commended by the President.”

All attempts to get Usman proved abortive as her phone indicated that it was switched off.

Similarly, the phone number of Falae indicated that it was switched off when our correspondent attempted to reach him for comment.

However, the former SGF had said he received money to campaign for Jonathan through a former Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih

When contacted on the telephone, Udenwa told our correspondent that he never received any money as he did not even operate a Zenith bank account.

“I don’t operate a Zenith bank account, so, I don’t know what you are talking about,” he said.

How Jonathan’s Govt Blew N2.2b On Prayers- Ex-NNPC Chief

Besides the fortune sunk into phoney arms deals, no less than N2.2billion was spent on prayers against Boko Haram,  it was learnt yesterday.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration blew the cash on special prayers in Nigeria and Saudi  Arabia to win the war.

The cash was disbursed through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), following a proposal by a former Executive Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Aminu Baba-Kusa.

Baba-Kusa, in his statement of witness filed in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is facing trial with a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) and three others.

The others are Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited (owned by Baba-Kusa) and a former Director of Finance in ONSA, Shuaibu Salisu.

In the statement, Baba-Kusa said the N2.2billion was spent on prayers to hasten the defeat of Boko Haram.

The cash was released in two tranches of N1,450,000,000 and N750,000,000.

Baba-Kusa told EFCC investigators that the contract proposal was verbal.

But the suspect has promised to refund the N2.2billion by disposing of his assets.

Baba-Kusa said: “I approached the former NSA and discussed Boko Haram problems and I suggested there is need for prayers and he considered and accepted in 2013 when he first came to office.

“I personally sponsored many people locally and some few to Saudi Arabia. Some monies were later paid into our companies, which we paid to some of the mallams.

“I then arranged to recover my personal expense which I put into our own businesses.

“We have been spending a lot from our businesses and personal accounts. Money paid through UBA, First Bank and ECOBANK. For Acacia Holdings Limited(A/C 1017330319-UBA); ECOBANK(0122012650); and First Bank(Reliance Referral Hospitals Limited A/C 2022394057). The total amount is N2,200,000,000 from October 2014 to April 2015.”

He told detectives that he is not an expert, “but I used some of the mallams to organise in Abuja, Zaria, Kano, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Kaduna and Saudi Arabia covering 2013 to 2015.”

He added: “I give them funds as required from time to time, ranging from N500,000 to N30million, depending on their needs, traveling, sadaqat and others for local expenses and travels to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj.

“I reminded the NSA many times before payments were made. We grew up together with the former NSA with common friends in ABU.

“Most of the payments in cash were meant to give out cash to people that have been organising prayers. Some transfers to Acacia to other banks were for logistics and also to some mallams in cash.”

The suspect also confirmed that the prayer contract was not documented.

He added: “The proposal made to the former NSA was not documented by him or myself. The verbal proposal to him was for prayers to overcome Boko Haram within the shortest possible time.

“The engagement for prayers by organising some people to be praying was not formally written down.

“There was no amount of money agreed on. I said to him, I will start organising, which he agreed and said he will see what he would give at a later time.

Baba-Kusa said he had an estimate of over N700million spent “from my own resources before I started to ask for money from him”. Some of these funds came from disposal of some of my land in Abuja. One in Maitama, one in Gudu and one in Guzape. The Maitama was a little over N200million; Guzape (N80m), Gudu(N18m), he told the EFCC.

But, according to him, he kept no records of the money he gave to individual Mallams organising various groups. I requested for no acknowledgement from them when I gave money to them.”

He assured the EFCC that he would refund the said cash if he is able to dispose of his landed properties.

He said: “I am making efforts to dispose of my properties in Abuja which would be over the total amount of N2.2billion. If the sales go through and the amount from the sales is made in full, I will make full payment.”

In the 19 charges against the five suspects, Baba-Kusa, Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited are alleged to have “between October 2014 and April 2015 in Abuja agreed to do an illegal act to wit : dishonestly receiving property to wit: an aggregate sum of N2,200,000,000 being part of the funds in the accounts of the Office of  National Security Adviser and  that the same act was fine in pursuance of the agreement among you and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Vol.4, LFN 2004.”

$24bn contracts: Diezani Shuns Reps Panel

The immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday failed to appear before the ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives investigating the crude oil swap contracts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The former minister neither appeared in person nor sent a representative to the hearing of the committee, which is chaired by an All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Kwara State, Mr. Zakari Mohammed.

The committee had summoned Alison-Madueke and a former Managing Director of the Pipelines Product Marketing Company, Mr. Haruna Momoh, in connection with the lifting of crude oil worth $24bn in exchange for refined petroleum products.

Two crude oil trading firms, Duke Oil and Tranfigura reportedly lifted the crude oil between 2011 and 2014 without valid contracts.

The summons were issued after three former GMDs of the NNPC – Mr. Austin Oniwon, Mr. Andrew Yakubu and Mr. Joseph Dawha – had informed the committee that Alison-Madueke “approved” the contracts without signing any valid agreements with the firms.

On Wednesday, however, the former minister failed to show up at the committee’s sitting.

Momoh too did not come.

Instead, he sent his younger brother, Mr. Suleiman Momoh, to inform the committee that he was ill and would not be able to appear before the panel on Wednesday.

Mohammed was left bewildered when he called for appearances and realised that Alison-Madueke was absent.

He said the committee would take the “appropriate steps” to address the absence of the former minister, but he did not elaborate on the nature of the steps.

Mohammed stated, “Anybody who knows the former minister and Momoh should tell them that they are daring the parliament and we will take the appropriate measures against them.”

However, Momoh’s younger brother, Suleiman, rose to register an excuse that his elder brother was ill.

“He is ill and he will not be able to attend this session of the committee,” Suleiman added.

The committee rejected Suleiman’s excuse and directed him to tell Momoh that he must appear before the panel.

Meanwhile, the Federal Inland Revenue Service told the session that Transfigura defaulted in tax payments to the Federal Government to the tune of $642.5m.

The agency disclosed that in 2010, the tax value of the firm’s trading was $613.7m; in 2011, it was $2.7m; and $2.5m in 2012.

It added that the tax value in 2013 was $2.4m; and $2.2m in 2014.

The agency explained that after applying the relevant tax laws to the operations of the firm for the period covered, the total tax liability stood at $642.5m.

In the case of Duke Oil, the FIRS informed the panel that it calculated $4.7m as its total tax liability.

“The computation was based on the commissions Duke Oil charged on its services,” the agency said.

The committee also asked the Nigeria Customs Service to ignore a 2008 directive by the Ministry of Finance that the NCS should not inspect petroleum product cargo declared by importers.

The NCS had told the committee that the directive was given to forestall any possible delay in the offloading of products for distribution downstream.

Mohammed noted, “The Customs and Excise Act is more important than any letter from any ministry in 2008.

“We will invite the Permanent Secretary, who issued that directive, to appear before us and explain why it was necessary.”

“The NCS should ignore that letter forthwith.”

Breaking : Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan Govts Must Account For Recovered Loot – Court

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos in a landmark judgment has held that successive governments since the return of democracy in 1999 “breached the fundamental principles of transparency and accountability for failing to disclose details about the spending of recovered stolen public funds, including on a dedicated website.”

The court then ordered the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to “ensure that his government, and the governments of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and former President Goodluck Jonathan account fully for all recovered loot.”

The judgment was delivered on Friday by Hon Justice M.B. Idris following a Freedom of Information suit no: FHC/IKJ/CS/248/2011 brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The details ordered by the court to be disclosed include: information on the total amount of recovered stolen public assets by each government; the amount of recovered stolen public assets spent by each government as well as the objects of such spending and the projects on which such funds were spent. Justice Idris dismissed all the objections raised by the Federal Government and upheld SERAP’s arguments.

Details later.

BoT Gives Jonathan March Deadline To Reject Sheriff

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders are still quarelling over the choice of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as Acting National Chairman.

Some former ministers and members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) have raised a committee to meet with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who is to be told —reject Sheriff or face a mass exodus. The deadline is March.

Sheriff barged into a BoT session yesterday but members only promised to get back to him on his plea for acceptance.

The BoT resolved not to endorse Sheriff. It may advertise the job, a source hinted.

But the  anti-Sheriff forces in the party and some members of the National Working Committee(NWC) are pushing for the tenure of the acting chairman to end in March.

‘Ali Modu Sheriff Is A Wrong Choice As PDP Chairman’ – Doyin Okupe

Former Spokesperson of former President Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, says the appointment of Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP Chairman is wrong and also coming at a wrong time. He shared his thoughts on his Facebook wall yesterday. What he wrote below …

“The capability of our party, the pdp and its leadership to make grave errors of judgement is legendary. What is intriguing is that even out of power that tendency seems unabating. Alhadji Ali Sheriff is a longstanding political associate of mine and a very adroit and astute politician of perhaps a sublime class.
But for the post of the National chairman of the Pdp, He is a wrong candidate and also coming in at a wrong time. According to many of his proponents, his strong point is that being a man of great financial resources he will be favourably disposed to funding the activities of the party easily. But the antagonists believe that he is bringing along with his wealth a crushing weight of burden capable of fatally destroying the few strands of moral fibers on which a rejuvenation will depend on. For a morosed and severely prostrate political party, thanks to the overwhelming and effective propaganda machinery of the (opposition) party in power, this may yet be the mortal wound that may cause the eventual heamorrage of its long perplexed followership. The present crop of leadership of the pdp have not faired well. Impunity, presumptive reasoning, highly stratified and restrictive consultative processes, absolute lack of inclusiveness, mercantilism, group conceit with a resultant total disconnect with the main stake holders and the followership are some of the florrid signs and symptoms of the terminal disease that is killing this erstwhile great party. Some of us have vowed not to leave the party. We still will not leave the party. Better still in spite of the present situation of things we will continue to engage all who care to listen and deepen consultation across the country seeking help from everyone ready to help to revive this severely challenged sickened giant. But if it is the divine will of God that our present masters must kill PDP, then by the Grace of God we shall yet tarry at the graveside to bid it farewell.”

Diezani Approved $24bn Crude Swap Without Contract – Ex-NNPC GMD

A former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Austin Oniwon, confirmed on Tuesday that there was no formal contract between the NNPC and trading companies that lifted $24bn worth of crude oil from the country between 2011 and 2014.

Oniwon told the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Crude Oil Swap that a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, merely granted the “extension” of an earlier contract.

He said the extension was not a formal contract before he (Oniwon) left office in 2012.

The committee is chaired by an All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Kwara State, Mr. Zakari
Mohammed.

“There was an approval for the extension by the minister; I believe the records are with the NNPC,” he added.

The NNPC began taking 445,000 barrels of crude daily in 2010 for refining in a bid to meet the country’s local demand of petroleum products.

But when the country’s refineries failed to run, the NNPC resorted to exchanging the crude (swap) for refined products through an arrangement with appointed crude trading firms.

The original (first) contract was signed between the NNPC and two crude traders, Duke Oil and Tranfigura in 2010 to last for one year. It expired officially in 2011.

However, Alison-Madueke reportedly granted an extension of the contract without the NNPC formally signing another contract on the new (second) deal.

The committee had earlier heard from the firms that crude lifting indeed continued till 2014 before a contract was formalised.

One of the lawmakers, Mr. Michael Enyong, said, “These companies had lifted crude worth $24bn before the contract was signed in 2014 and backdated to look like it was signed in 2011 when the first one expired.”

The committee had put Oniwon under pressure after he consistently told members that there was no “breach” in the exchange arrangements throughout his tenure.

When he was reminded that there were evidence indicating that the contract expired in 2011, but it continued to run till 2014, Oniwon replied that Alison-Madueke “approved” the extension.

Oniwon also argued that as GMD of the NNPC, he did not require a presidential and Federal Executive Council approval to enter into the swap arrangements.

According to Oniwon, the 445,000 barrels of crude were the property of the NNPC, which it bought from the Federal Government at the prevailing rate for refining.

He added that the swap crude was different from the Federation Crude, the latter being entirely the property of the government.

Besides, he stated that only 150,000 barrels out of the 445,000 were traded under the swap deals.

He added, “I am not a lawyer, but I didn’t need anybody’s approval to take crude to the refinery for refining if the refineries were running.

“This crude had been paid for by the NNPC. If I needed to take the crude for exchange, I am not going to write the Federal Government. It is NNPC’s decision on what to do to guarantee regular supply of products in the country.

“That was the whole essence of the swap arrangement; to ensure that we had adequate products, which we achieved successfully.”

However, the committee insisted that the NNPC under Oniwon and the former minister breached procurement procedures by engaging in a transaction worth well above N100m without FEC’s approval.

Oniwon stood his grounds that he did not feel the NNPC required another approval, since the minister, “the immediate boss”, had approved the crude swap arrangement.

“If there was supposed to be a higher approval, it was the minister who should seek the approval, not the NNPC,” Oniwon added.

When asked what was the spending or approval limit of the GMD, Oniwon replied, “It was put at $10m.”

Oniwon’s successor, Mr. Andrew Yakubu, also appeared before the committee to say that he made efforts to review the swap arrangement with a view to correcting noticeable lapses, but that he was frustrated.

Yakubu, who assumed office as GMD on June 27, 2012, disclosed that he set up a team of experts from the legal and corporate divisions of the NNPC to carry out the review after which he sent a report to Alison-Madueke.

He added, “Among the issues we raised were the controversies generated by the swap arrangement, the need for contract valuation and how to improve on it to be more beneficial to our operations.

“I forwarded a report to the minister in April 2014 and the document never came to me until my removal (as GMD) was announced by 9pm on August 1, 2014.”

Yakubu advised the National Assembly to give more protection to the headship of the NNPC as a national oil company so that it could perform optimally at all times.

He noted that the current set-up, whereby the GMD’s tenure was left to the pleasure of the appointing authorities, called for an urgent review.

The committee directed the NNPC to search its records and produce Yakubu’s report.

Members also asked the corporation to produce evidence of the extension of the contract Alison-Madueke granted without a formal contract.

How GEJ’s Ex ADC Transported N10billion In 17 Suitcases To PDP Chiefs – Report

Detectives are questioning former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-Aide-De-Camp (ADC) on the disbursement of more than N10 billion oil proceeds to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nomination convention delegates.

Col. Ojogbane Adegbe is being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is on the trail of another key aide to the former President – Waripamowei Dudafa, former Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs.

Adegbe and Dudafa collected the cash — $47m and some Euros from the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA), it was learnt.

The money was diverted by ONSA from a Signature Bonus Account in the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN).
The N10billion is believed to have been diverted from oil receipts as follows: USD5.0M(November 14,2014); $47m( November 27, 2014); Euro 4.0M (December 3, 2014) and Euro 1.6M(December 24, 2014)
It was learnt that the former ADC was yesterday relocated from Mogadishu Cantonment for quizzing by the EFCC on the disbursement of the cash.
A source said: “We spent hours to grill the ADC on how he got and disbursed the $47million which was delivered to him in about 17 suitcases.

“The money was diverted from the CBN to bribe or settle PDP delegates to adopt ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for second term.
“We have asked him in the last 12 hours to account for how he came about the cash.

“He is also expected to provide the list of beneficiaries of the largesse. All the beneficiaries will be unveiled by the EFCC and they have to refund public funds.”
On Dudafa, the top source said: “We are tracking him down. We are trying to locate his whereabouts in Dubai and some Caribbean Islands.
“What is certain is that Dudafa has moved out of the country to avoid being arrested by the anti-graft agency.”

The N10billion was taken from the Signature Bonus Account( oil block account ) with the CBN.

In an October 29, 2015 to EFCC, the apex bank said: “Your letter ref: EFCC/EC/ CBN/ 12/163 dated 21st September 2015 to the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and the directive by the management that we provide some explanations, we wish to state as follows:

“The N10billion constitutes two tranches of N5.08billion each debited to the CBN/OAGF SIGNATURE BONUS ACCOUNT NO 400225220 vide OAGF memo Ref: FD/LP2015/1/28 DF to the Office of the National Security Adviser A/C Number 20172241019 with the CBN Abuja and the second was for credit into the account of National Security Adviser Account Number 1014199287 with Zenith Bank Plc Wuse II Abuja.

“The transactions were consummated on November 10, 2014. The mandate that authorised the withdrawal of USD47.0M was from the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA) with REF: NSA/366/S dated November 26, 2014. The mandate was processed for dollar cash payment to Mr. S. A. Salisu on November 27, 2014.

“The USD5.0M was via a memo from the ONSA memo REF: ACCT/86/VOL. 2/ 218 dated November 13, 2014. The National Security Adviser Account Number 20172241019 was debited and Dollar cash payment made to Mr. Wambai Ibrahim on November 14, 2014 in line with the mandate.
“The Euro 4.0M and Euro 1.6M transactions were via mandate from ONSA memo REF: NASS/ 366/S dated November 26, 2014. The NSA’s Account Number 20172241019 was debited and Euro cash payment effected as follows: Euro 4.0M on December 3, 2014 and Euro 1.6M was on December 24, 2014. These sums were released to Mr. S. A. Salisu as stipulated in the mandate. Attached are copies of all the relevant documents please.”

The CBN Governor responded to a letter ( EFCC/EC/CBN/12/163) of 21st September, 2015 by a former Chairman of EFCC,Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde.
The three-paragraph letter said: “ This commission is investigating a case of Abuse of Office and money laundering of funds for special services by the Office of the National Security Adviser which were withdrawn in November 2014.
“We seek your kind assistance to provide available information on the disbursement of the funds with copies of relevant documents, including transfers to foreign and local banks and cash withdrawals.
“Thank you in anticipation of your usual cooperation.”
In his Statement of Witness/Accused Person which had been filed in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), ex-NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki said the over N10billion was given to the ADC and Dudafa.
He said: “That I am aware in November, I cannot remember the exact date. My office requested the CBN to exchange N10billion from the account of the Office Nations Security Adviser domiciled in CBN. The money was exchanged and $47m and some Euros which I cannot remember the exact amount was delivered at my residence.
“The money was for delegates that attended the nomination convention for the PDP presidential nomination. The money was paid and sent to Hon. Dudafa(SSAP Household) and ADC(C-I-C) for distribution on the instruction of the President.
“Based on the statement of Director of Finance and Administration (Salisu), Ibrahim Wambai, and Yazidu Ibrahim, all the cash(both foreign and local) are usually given to them for official use.”

Colonel Ojogbane Adegbe

A usually credible source familiar with the development informed THEWILL of the arrest Wednesday.

The President Muhammadu Buhari administration has opened a wide investigation into how billions of dollars in state funds were allegedly siphoned by officials of the last administration.

Calls to Colonel S.K. Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, on Wednesday night were unanswered. But the spokesman later responded to THEWILL SMS, texting, “I have no idea” to our question on the arrest of the senior officer.

Also, calls to EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajaren were neither acknowledged nor returned before this update.

Jonathan And Alison-Madueke Named In Abuja Land Grab List

I acted within my powers, says ex-Minister Mohammed

The Senate is exploring ways and means of invoking sanctions against former President Goodluck Jonathan and some former ministers for allegedly appropriating reserved plots of land in Abuja.

According to the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the plots acquired by Jonathan and his ministers were designated as green areas, flood drains, city buffers, recreation centres, sewage lines, urban farming and city monuments.

At a briefing yesterday, the chairman of the Committee, Senator Dino Melaye, said the illegally
acquired areas fall within the highbrow Maitama District.

Describing the action of Jonathan and his ministers as “satanic”, Melaye blamed the immediate past former Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, for the “indiscretion”.

Besides Jonathan, the committee listed other beneficiaries of the “land grab” to include former Petroleum Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke and former Justice Minister Mohammed Adoke.

Other beneficiaries include former Trade and Investment Minister Olusegun Aganga; Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus and FCT Executive Director Ismaila Adamu.

Some of the beneficiaries have started erecting structures on the plots, which were “hurriedly allocated” in the twilight of the last administration. Certificates of Occupancy were hurriedly issued for the plots, the committee alleged.

Melaye said: “Senator Bala Mohammed, in his bid to satisfy some powerful Nigerians before the end of his tenure, disregarded the wisdom of his predecessors and the vision of the founding fathers of Abuja.

“He went ahead to implement Messrs Fola Consult Limited’s recommendation by allocating these important features/endowments, including the Maitama Hills, to these powerful Nigerians.

“It is pathetic to state that one of the allottees has erroneously burst a sewage conduit pipe and the entire area messed up with offensive odour which could trigger off serious epidemic within that location.”

Faulting Mohammed’s defence of the allocations, Melaye said the former minister’s action amounted to maladministration, adding that “it is satanic “.

He added that the committee plans to put a Stop Work Order on the various construction sites on the plots. Besides, the beneficiaries are to replace all the trees they felled during construction.

But Mohammed said the committee was misinformed on the allocations.

In an advertorial published in some national dailies, the former Minister said he never acted outside the limits of his powers.

In the advertorial, signed on his behalf by his Media Consultant, Mr. Emma Agu, Mohammed insisted that the Abuja Master Plan had never been inviolable.

According to him, the Abuja Master Plan is a dynamic road map for the city’s land use and infrastructure development, guided by the demands of change and time.

He added that his actions were informed by the need to ensure full utilisation of available resources and that the allocations were made in compliance with the Land Use Act.

According to him, construction was approved after the allottees had obtained building plan approvals from the Department of Development Control of the FCT.

He urged the Senate committee to seek adequate information from the FCT administration, stressing that the allocations could only be reversed by an incumbent Minister of the FCT.

PDP: APC Cannot Retract Itself From The Alleged Destruction Of The Nations Economy

The ruling party, All Progressive Congress () has always labelled the erstwhile ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party () for destroying the country’s .

But according to the PDP, the APC cannot retract itself from the alleged destruction of the country’s economy.

Deji Adeyanju, PDP’s new media director in a chat with Naij.com said out of the 19 northern states governors, 12 are former PDP members and elected officials. He questioned how the governors who were once in the PDP have now become saints and can be retracted from the APC allegation.

He said the APC should rather work on restoring the country’s economy rather than pointing accusing fingers.

He also questioned the new electricity tariff hike asking what happened to the change slogan the party promised during electioneering.

Meanwhile, PDP has announced a new date for its NEC meeting to next week following requests by critical stakeholders and leaders of the party.

In the new schedule, the meeting of the National Caucus of the party has been moved to Monday, February 15th at 7pm.

The meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) will now hold on Tuesday morning, February 16th while the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will hold at 2pm on the same Tuesday, February 16th, 2016.

Fashola Begs Nigerians To Accept Hike In Electricity Tariff, Faults Jonathan’s Privatization Of Power Sector

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has noted that the increase in electricity tariffs is the first major policy the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is coming up with, describing same as “a painful pill,” which consumers have to “swallow.”Fashola disclosed this Monday during the second monthly meeting with stakeholders in the power sector in Lagos, where he also inspected some projects at the Alagbon Transmission and Distribution Complex.

Fashola’s comments came at a time Nigerian workers under the aegis of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Trade Union Congress, TUC, joined by Civil Society Organizations embarked on peaceful protests against the policy which has grounded commercial activities in several cities in the country.

His words, “Importantly, I understand that people who have been disappointed over a long time will feel a sense of concern that again tariffs have gone up. But the truth is that these tariffs ought to have been there from day one. I don’t know why the government of yesterday was not courageous enough to tell us this was the price.

“It is a painful pill that I must appeal that we swallow. It is like quinine and malaria. It’s painful; it’s not sweet, I know that, but I do it because we are not left with many choices. This is the first major decision in power that this administration has taken. There are other problems.

“I can only appeal for some understanding and some trust that we do this in the best interest of our country. It is a hard decision, but I think down the line, we will have cause to look…”

The minister, who faulted the way the privatisation of the power sector carried out by the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan, said the sector was being plagued by several problems including gas supply shortfall and transmission issue.

‘We’ll Locate Chibok Girls, Others’ – Chief Of Air Staff Says

Few days after former President Obasanjo said that the missing Chibok girls will not be found again, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar, has expressed optimism that they will be rescued alongside other Nigerians kidnapped by Boko Haram. The Chief of Air Staff said this when he inspected various on-going projects of the Nigerian Air Force at its Tactical Air Command (TAC) in Makurdi, Benue State over the weekend.

“What I can tell you is that we are doing everything humanly possible to deal with all the challenges that there are in the current insurgency going on, that of course involves our trying to locate not only the Chibok girls but every Nigerian that is kidnapped. We are working day and night through intelligence gathering and surveillance. We are expending a lot of flying hours to make sure we are able to locate Chibok girls and every Nigerian that is kidnapped,” he said Obasanjo at a function in Ile-Ife on Friday February 5th, said searching for the missing girls would be in vain “Searching for the Cbibok girls would be in vain because nobody can bring back the girls for they are nowhere to be found. Nigerian leaders should stop deceiving the populace as Chibok girls cannot return again. The disappearance of the Chibok girls is as a result of non-challant attitude of the previous leaders who did not switch to action immediately, which constituted impediment to their return.”he said

PDP’s Defeat Saved Nigeria — Dogara

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, yesterday, declared that the Boko Haram insurgency would have destroyed Nigeria if President Goodluck Jonathan had remained in power, asserting that the defeat of his government saved the nation from imminent collapse.

While declaring that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was winning the war against insurgency, Dogara called on the President to immediately organize an International donor conference for the North East, saying funds realized from such a conference would be used to rebuild the war-torn region. The speaker stated this when he visited the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camp at Uhogua in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Addressing the IDPs, Dogara who, expressed shock at the number of IDPs in the camp, lamented that PDP’s government failed to tackle the war as expected. He said this created the current crisis in the country and commended Edo State government and the General Overseer of the camp, Pastor Folorunsho Solomon, for keeping the camp running. He vowed to ensure that the National Assembly played its part to ensure that IDPs were well taken care of.

“I want to thank God for the intervention in our affairs that he brought change in government. If we had continued like before, probably the Boko Haram fighters would have reached places like Jos by now. “It would have been millions of IDPs but God heard our prayers, he brought change in government. And the commitment in ending this fight has commenced in earnest by this administration.

“We have seen that attacks have reduced drastically. So it is hoped that very soon, may be this year, most likely most of us who are here today and want to go back to their communities may be able to do that. “They will go back without any fear of intimidation, we must do it because we have no other country but Nigeria.” The speaker, who donated bags of rice, beans, wheat, sugar and other items, promised to offset the bills of students in the camp involved in NECO and WAEC examinations. “I never knew that I will see this multitude of my own brothers and sisters. I have been told but maybe I did not believe enough, but the moment I stepped into the church, I saw a people that are determined not to be broken, in spite of the circumstances of their life.

“Apart from the war against terrorism, we in the House of Representatives are trying to pass a law that will establish the North East Development Commission. “So if that happens, it means we are going to have funds that will be used to rebuild the communities that you have come from when the war is over. And we will ensure that every fund meant for that is channelled for that purpose. Apart from that, there is a provision in the budget that will take care of you. “That is to say that the government has not forgotten you. And we have been encouraging private sector participation in managing the IDP crisis in Nigeria. “We have the victim support fund that is private sector driven. It is led by one of our eminent sons, Gen.T.Y.Danjuma.

“In addition, we have been calling on government to organize what is known as the International donor conference for the North East. “Just recently, it was done for Syria, so we want to reiterate this call for government to immediately convene an international donor conference for the North East. “So as soon as these funds start coming, we will make sure that wherever IDPs are in Nigeria, the hands of help to all IDPs in Nigeria will come. So as long as this government endures, you will always be in our heart. “Because we are in church, I will talk to you from the perspective of Christianity. I have not come here like any other politician, as I must sympathise with you, I must also encourage you. “I know the circumstances that brought you here because I am part of that region of the North East as well. And I remember that in my own local government, I had to concede one of my houses for IDPs from Yobe and some parts of Borno State.”

FG Debunks Jonathan’s Weapons Claim On Fight Against Boko Haram

The Nigerian government has said that whatever weapons that were procured by the Jonathan Administration for the military to prosecute the war against terrorism were substandard and could not have been responsible for the string of successes recorded by the military in recent times.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, described as “unfortunate and unsubstantiated” the statement credited to former President Goodluck Jonathan attributing the recent successes in the war to the weapons bought by his administration that were delivered after he had left office.

Mr. Jonathan tweeted about the weapons last week.

“The current administration continues to fight them with the weapons we acquired and collectively I am confident we will eradicate them,” he said referring to Boko Haram.

Mr. Mohammed said the present administration owes it a duty to put the record straight, especially because the issues raised by the former president are of public interest and borders on national security.

”The weapons, munitions and equipment which the former President said he bought were refurbished and lacked the basic components and spare parts. Additionally, the ammunition bought for both high calibre and small weapons have mostly expired, incompatible with weapons and grossly inadequate,” Mr. Mohammed said, according to a statement signed by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi.

”It is pertinent to state that the ammunition he was referring to were back loaded because they explode within the barrel when fired, thus leading to deaths and injuries among soldiers.”

Olisah Metuh’s Torn Statement Linked Jonathan To N400m – EFCC

Details have emerged about what the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, allegedly wrote in the torn statement which he made under caution while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on January 5.

The statements of the operatives who were said to have witnessed the incident and the “incidence record book” which gives details of the occurrence were part of the documents filed along with the charges of destruction of evidence preferred against him by the EFCC before a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

The court papers obtained by our correspondent on Sunday indicate that five operatives of the
commission witnessed the incident which was said to have happened on January 5, 2016, the day the PDP spokesperson was arrested.

Metuh allegedly tore his statement on January 5, 2016 while being investigated for an alleged fraudulent receipt of N400m from the Office of the National Security Adviser and money laundering allegation involving a separate sum of $2m.

The court documents indicate that the pieces of the torn statement have been kept with the commission’s exhibit keeper.

The entry number 049 in the incident duty log which was recorded at 4.30pm by an EFCC detective, Junaid Sa’id, on January 5, 2016, reads, “Destruction OF Written Statement: I have booked the incident of tearing into pieces of statement by Mr. Olisa Metuh, who was given his statement to endorse after volunteering his statement and he decided to tear into pieces the third page of his four-page statement.

“The torn statement has however been registered with the Exhibit Keeper. Entry made by Det. Junaid Sa’id.”

The document gives the timeline and details of how Metuh’s arrest was effected at about 10.55am in his residence at Prince and Princess Estate in Gudu, Abuja, on January 5, up till when he allegedly tore part of the statement at about.4.25pm on the same day.

It also indicates that Metuh had stated in the part of the torn statement that the account in which the N400m was paid was requested for by former President Goodluck Jonathan, for payments to be made to settle some debts owed by the PDP.

It reads in part, “12.30 hours: Mr. Metuh Olisa began to volunteer his statement under words of caution.

“15.30 hours: Mr. Metuh Olisa concluded his statement which was of four pages. I passed the statements to the team leader, CSP Ibrahim Musa, to read over and endorse accordingly but in the process of reading and after endorsing pages one and two, he swiftly tore into pieces page three of his statement which read that former President Jonathan had asked him to make available, account details owed by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the debts owed him personally and some media houses.

“He further stated that he gave the account details of Destra Investments Ltd. to the President and thereafter he received the payment of N400m into his company’s accounts which he used for specific assignments given to him by the President of which he was not willing to disclose for what purpose.

“I thereafter refused to give him page four of his statement for endorsement because I did not want him to tear it as well. This incidence (sic) happened in the presence of the following officers: Mr. Ibrahim Musa, Mr. Wetkas Michael, Mr. Bello Umar, Ms. Ibrahim, who were all carrying out their various assignments.

“16.30 hours: The torn page of the statement which is in pieces was registered with the exhibit keeper and the incident recorded in the incidence record book of the commission.”

Aluko Revelation: Read All He Said On #Ekitigate

A former secretary of the Ekiti State chapter of the governing Peoples Democratic Party,  Tope Aluko, on Sunday revealed how former President Goodluck Jonathan gave the then candidate of the party, Ayo Fayose, large sums of money and military support to help rig the governorship election held in the state in 2014.

Mr. Fayose however reacted swiftly, describing the claims by the former PDP secretary as simply a new distraction from the APC in Ekiti State.

The governor said Mr. Aluko deserved no response from sane minds.

Speaking on a political programme, Politics Today, on Channels Television, Mr. Aluko narrated how the state’s chapter of the party convinced Mr. Jonathan to part with huge sum of money and direct the military and other security agencies to cooperate with the PDP and ensure the party wins the election at all cost.

“Before the primaries, we had this believe that because Jonathan was coming out for second term and because we are going to be the first election in the south-west, at a meeting, we told him (former President Goodluck Jonathan) that north-east, north-west and north-central may not be too sure for him because the Hausas are clamouring for presidency and that you now have south-east and South-south, you must manage the South-west”.

“It was on the basis of that that we told him that he must manage South-west.

“Because of his interest, even before winning the primaries, we did so many security reports to tell Mr President then that he must make sure that we manage South-west zone and it was because of that that he gave us the head of security agencies,” Mr Aluko said.

The PDP chieftain was also quoted as telling reporters in Abuja that Mr. Jonathan actually gave Mr. Fayose $37 million (N4.7 bn) which was used to rig the election.

The then incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi, conceded defeat after the Independent National Electoral Commission, declared Mr. Fayose winner of the election.

Before the election, security operatives from the State Security Service, acting as a “Strike Team” arrested some chieftains of the APC, including then spokesperson of the party, Lai Mohammed and others.

Troops of the Nigerian Army also blocked all roads leading into the state, and the planes of some APC governors, including those of Rivers and Edo States, were denied landing rights.

Mr. Aluko on Sunday said the then Minister of  State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and that of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, were made to give attention to the election because “we know that APC was everywhere in the southwest and we must naturally capture part of southwest if we want to balance what our brothers in the north were likely to bring on”.

He also revealed that there was an agreement to take out some members of the APC to ensure that they do not give adequate support to their members.

“There was a strike team, a mixture of the SSS, military, the mobile police… that is about all.

“We had a meeting at Aso Rock on security and funds. We were given security and funds.

He listed the persons at the meeting to include Mr. Jonathan; the then national chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, Governor Fayose; and himself (Aluko).

“At the meeting President Jonathan agreed that if he needed Ekiti, he would support us to ensure that we delivered.

“At the second meeting we had Obanikoro, Jelili, Omisore… It was a combination of Osun and Ekiti people and they were discussing how we were going to move to take the South-west.

“Before the primaries, His Excellency, Ayodele Fayose, said that we can only win using the military,” he said.

Ibori Replies Attorney-General: “There Is No Ibori Loot Anywhere”

Read the press statement below…

Chief James Onanefe Ibori’s Media Office was shocked to read in the newspapers of Wednesday January 27, 2016, that the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said the Federal Government was priming itself to recover the sum of 6.9m British Pounds Sterling described as “Ibori loot”.

In a press statement, Mr. Tony Eluemunr, Ibori’s Media Assistant said ‘’there is no Ibori loot anywhere in the world.

Such money, whether in British pounds, American dollars or the Nigerian Naira just does not exist. This is because the Ibori London trial is not yet over. It is an incontrovertible fact that the confiscation hearing has not started at all, and remains months away into the future. This makes it disappointing that a high official of State such as the Attorney-General may have been misled into believing that an Ibori loot not only exists anywhere, but he even put a figure (6.9 million pounds) to it.

Mr. Eluemunor continued: “With all due respect to the Minister and the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, it is curious that such a misleading statement could have come less than a week that dozens of well-respected foreign media organisations including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), The Times of London, The Guardian of London,   and a host of Nigerian news outlets reported that the case against Ibori and his associates have become shaky as some operatives of the London Metropolitan Police have been accused of bribery and corruption in the course of their investigations. Thus at the Thursday January 21, 2016 hearing the prosecution was forced to withdraw its case against one of Ibori’s counsels, Mr. Bradesh Gohil. It had charged Gohil of leaking fabricated documents to media organisations and Members of (British) Parliament, but Gohil turned the case against the Police, accusing it of misleading the court with tainted evidence from corrupt operatives and of withholding key documents which could have proved police corruption.
The New Indian Express of Monday 25 January 2016 ventured further than the Times to report that Gohil, who was freed from jail last year, may now challenge his previous conviction, just as Ibori or any of his associates already convicted may also decide to do.
In representations to the judge, Stephen Kamlish, Gohil’s defence team leader accused the Crown Prosecution Service of “positively misleading the court and the parties as part of their deliberate cover-up of discloseable material”.
In response, the Judge said, “The crown has offered no evidence for one or both of the following reasons. One, that the allegations of corruption made by Mr Gohil are true, and not false. The second is that the crown has suppressed material both in this court and in other proceedings, including the trial of Ibori”. Then he said in words that must be sweet music to Ibori’s ears; “The crown offering no evidence can only mean the crown is not prepared themselves to explain their decision, either for the abuse of the court in bad faith or for the police corruption. In those circumstances, it is our duty to our client to raise these matters and this brings into question the safety of these (past) convictions.”  This means all the past convictions could be challenged afresh.
The New Indian Express continued; “A Met police intelligence report seen by the paper suggests an RISC employee telephoned a police officer working on the Ibori investigation in 2007 and allegedly told him his inquiries were “on the right track”. Separate documents shown to Gohil’s defence team are said to reveal the existence of 19 cash deposits into the same officer’s bank account. The Crown Prosecution had allegedly denied the existence of the documents”. However, it is on record that in the run up to the hearings, Ms Wass was directly accused by Gohil’s representative, Mr. Stephen Kamlish, of lying to the Court of Appeal and also lying to His Honour at the Southwark Court and disobeying his order for the Crown to disclose evidence in their possession which include the bank statements of Detective Constable John McDonald to the Defence before the start of the trial.
Eluemunor said that he assumed that the Minister may have been misquoted and so did not issue a rebuttal immediately. It was only when he failed to retract the statement after 24 hours that he decided to give Nigerians (including the Minister) the true perspective about the Ibori London trial and state categorically that the so called “Ibori Loot” Mr. Abubakar Malami saw as a “low hanging fruit ripe for plucking” must have been a terrible mirage. This has done nothing though to affect in any way the high regards Chief Ibori and his Media Office have for President Muhammadu Buhari, his administration and Ministers, including the Justice Minister, Mr. Abubakar Malami.  Chief Ibori wishes them well in their stated bid to leave Nigeria better than they found it.
 Signed: Tony Eluemunor

Media Assistant to Chief James Onanefe Ibori.

Jonathan Finally Speaks Up On Arms Deal Money, Boko Haram

Former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, attending a press conference at Geneva, opened up about issues that surrounded his administration amid criticisms and blames from the present administration.

At the press conference at the Geneva Press Club, he made mention of the trending arms deal money scandal and said his voice will be heard at the appropriate time. Read some mentions from his twitter account regarding the arms deal money and Boko haram war below:

2.1B Arms Deal: Mu’azu, Dikko, Jonathan’s Aide May Be Declared Wanted

As EFCC intensifies its investigations into the alleged stealing of $2.1 billion arms fund, former Chairman of PDP Adamu Muazu, former Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service Abdullahi Dikko Inde and four others may soon be declared wanted as they have all reportedly declined to honor invitations by the EFCC to answer questions in connection with the fraud.

According to The Nation, the others are former PDP Kebbi State governorship candidate Gen. Bello Sarkin Yaki, a former top official in the Office of National Security Adviser, Col. Bello Fadile, former Special Assistant to eformer President Goodluck Jonathan on Domestic Affairs Waripamowei Dudafa and a former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Mr.Abdulrasheed Maina.

Investigations by EFCC have shown that they all have questions to answer as they are alleged to have diverted the arms fund for the prosecution of the campaign for the re-election of Jonathan last year. EFCC sources gave a breakdown of what each of them allegedly collected from Dasuki’s office
The breakdown is as follows:
Muazu—(N500million cash allegedly from the Office of the National Security Adviser);
Yaki(N200million from ONSA);
Fadile(N100million from ONSA);
Dudafa( being investigated for N10billion given to the delegates to the PDP’s nomination convention);
Maina—alleged N20billion pension fraud
Dikko—N3.5billion incurred  on internet project
“Security agencies have given these former public officers enough time but they have not turned up to clear some disbursements and  expenditures traced to them. The committee is not saying that they are guilty but it is imperative for them to appear before the team handling these issues. They have up to one week to honor the invitation of the panel or else they will be declared wanted by the appropriate security agencies.”the source said
Another source said“Some of the accused persons on trial admitted disbursing arms cash to a few of these former public officers. For instance, Dasuki, in his statement, said he handed over N10 billion to Dudafa for disbursement to delegates to PDP Nomination Convention. A former Minister of Finance, Amb. Bashir Yuguda, who is standing trial, said Yakin benefited to the tune of N200million from some funds. Most of these people are holed up abroad. Let them come home. Once they are declared wanted by security agencies, it will be easier to extradite them home.”.

Adams Oshiomhole Justifies The Handcuffing Of Olisa Metuh To Court

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole says handcuffing embattled National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh to court by prison officials yesterday January 19th, was in order. He said this while speaking at the council members of the Edo state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalist NUJ yesterday January 20th

“I want to appeal to the media to join President Buhari in fighting the anti-corruption war because if we don’t, and we allow these people to harass the president to silence, all of us are in trouble. I saw some headlines querying why should Metuh be in handcuffs.
If people who steal he-goats, dried grass cutters are in handcuffs; I have been to the police station several times and I see young men who rob not more than N500,000 naira in handcuffs, they are paraded and made to seat on the floor. Why should certain set of criminals be treated as if they are not suspected criminals and serious crimes at that? When you all reported lavishly how under the former president, the former defense chief set up a military tribunal to try soldiers who ran away from battle field and they were condemned to death, it was only Femi Falana who was consistent in fighting their case. Those are Nigerians who were to be killed for running away because they couldn’t confront a Boko Haram that was well armed while they were asked to go and fight with their bare hands and we were told that weapons, ammunitions and everything had been provided. When Borno Governor said, ‘look, our Armed Forces are fighting with bare hands’, he was told to shut up. Now it is clear from current revelations that the money that would have been used to arm these young men who joined the army with pride and who on a good day have the courage to fight not only at home but abroad, but because they didn’t have arms, they ran away. They were sentenced to death. Thanks to Buhari, some have been commuted now to various terms of imprisonment which I applaud and I think even that one should further be reviewed, they should summit their uniform but remain free people. Now, those who shared that money, this is not the usual security money, this is special appropriation to fight Boko Haram, $2.1 billion, people just shared it, everybody was using their son, co-opting young children into this while other people’s children were sentenced to death. And anybody who partakes in that and they put him in handcuffs, they say, why should he be in handcuff because he is an elite and the media will report it without also showing us pictures of some Nigerians whose fathers are not known, but are not less Nigerian than any of us, who are always not only in handcuffs but are put on the floor in various police stations and paraded even before they are charged to court and we all look at them and turn to the next pictures, it doesn’t attract a commentary. Why should some criminals just be celebrated even when we all can feel the amount of damage, the consequences of their rascality on our collective wellbeing. I think the media should support the President. This is not President Buhari’s fight, and you know he had reminded us that if we don’t kill corruption, it will kill us. Now corruption is fighting back”he said.

Fall Of Naira, Economy: Blame Jonathan – APC

All Progressives Congress, APC has said that the financial recklessness exhibited by the previous government of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was responsible for the fall of Naira and dwindling economy.

It further stated that the People’s Democratic Government, PDP “squandered” the resources of the country, stressing the APC met nothing with which to run the country.

The position of the party was stated by the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Timi Frank while speaking exclusively to Vanguard in Abuja on Sunday.

Frank who asked Nigerians to be patient with the government of the President Muhammadu Buhari however assured the people that the president was committed to reviving the economy.

“Personally, I am worried about the current situation of the economy but again I am letting you know it is not our fault because this is what we met. We met a bastardised system. We took over from a government that destroyed our economy. The PDP government embezzled the wealth of our nation. So our economy is something we are fighting to survive.

“And I can assure you that our government is taking every necessary step to make sure we revive our economy and that everything will come to stay. Clearly, I can tell you that this is why the President is moving round to make sure our economy stands again.

“The current situation of our country today, I am asking Nigerians not to blame President Buhari because he is working very hard to make sure things go well with Nigerians that voted APC government to power. They will not be disappointed.

“So the blame goes back again to the previous government, the PDP government which squandered the resources of our country. And today, Nigeria as a nation is suffering because of them. But by the grace of God, things will be fine again”, he said.

‘Jonathan Ran CBN Like Idi-Amin’ – Soludo

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Charles Soludo, has said former President Goodluck Jonathan ran the apex bank like the former Uganda dictator, Idi-Amin. Speaking in an interview in the current Business Edition of The Interview, Soludo described the recent revelations from the arms deal scandal as startling. He said the Central bank under the last administration was “the ATM of the Presidency,”.

“Imagine a scenario where a president can order the CBN to create an intervention fund for national stability and CBN literally ‘prints’ say, N3 trillion, and doles it out cash to the Presidency to prosecute an election campaign or for just about anything he fancies. It
is a scary thought. We are going down a dangerous path that ruins the economy. I don’t know any other country where such is tolerated, except perhaps what I watched in a movie about Idi Amin and his governor of central bank.”

Jonathan Threatened To Cage Me– Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has revealed how former President Goodluck Jonathan threatened to cage him after May 29 for throwing his weight behind the candidature of President Muhammadu Buhari in the last general elections.

Speaking at a meeting with APC leaders across the three Senatorial Districts of Edo State on Thursday, a highly elated Oshiomhole said “around this time last year, the tension in Nigeria was such that Prophets of doom around the world were almost unanimous that Nigeria would not survive 2015 but as you can see, man proposes, God disposes.

“Around this time last year, in January, a few weeks to the election, many were saying quite recklessly on radio and television that we were finished.

“The former President, Goodluck Jonathan told our National Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun to inform me that after the election, he will put me, Adams, the son of Oshiomhole in a hole and I told Chief Oyegun to inform him to dig that hole very deep because although I am short, in the course of pushing me into the hole, nobody knows who will get there first.

“Since he is taller than me, he needs to dig the hole deep enough so that either of us can get in. In the end, he is inside the hole and I am busy putting dust into that hole”.

Judge Orders Tompolo’s Arrest As He Failed To Appear In Court Today

Justice Ibrahim Buba of a federal high court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the arrest of former Niger Delta militant, Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo for failing to honor a court summon this morning. Tompolo was summoned to appear before the court to answer to a N13 billion land acquisition deal he had with the last administration.

The EFCC is alleging that Tompolo fraudulently sold the land to the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The land is meant for the construction of the Nigerian Maritime University. Tompolo
had yesterday stated that he had not received any court order summoning him.

Leaked Letter Exposes Jonathan’s Pact With Political Parties

A leaked letter dated January 26, 2015 yesterday in Abuja showed that the signatory on behalf of the PDP, Anenih, reacted to the six issues raised by the SDP before it could support the re-election bid of Jonathan in last year’s presidential election.

The letter is said not to be different in character from those of other parties, like Accord Party, which also got N100 million from the PDP.
The leaked letter assured the parties they would be considered as worthy participants in the PDP government if Jonathan won the election.

The letter, titled “Inter-Party Co-operation” reads: “I write to sincerely thank you for your letter dated January 23, 2015, on the above subject matter.
“After due consultations with relevant stakeholders of our party, I am pleased to convey to you our decisions on the issues and to further inform you that the president and the leadership of our party have expressed delight and strong optimism to fully cooperate and work with the SDP in the circumstance.”

On the implementation of the report of the 2014 National Conference, which Falae’s party insisted on, Anenih stated: “Please be assured that the report of the National Conference will be implemented to the letter.  We believe that having regard to the fact that the National Conference was a baby of the President, he is in a better position to implement it.  And this is what he is doing.”

On “zero tolerance to corruption”, he responded: “There is no doubt that our party, the PDP and your party, the SDP, are on the same page on this issue.

Apart from the fact that this administration has done more arrests, investigations, prosecutions and convictions of corrupt cases, the President has continuously laid emphasis on the need to develop an appropriate technology to comprehensively combat corruption and its vices.

The approach, for example, has produced immense results in eliminating corruption that was associated with the distribution of fertilizers in Nigeria in the past.”

On the battle to defeat insurgency, the parties were assured that since it was ‘‘ the primary duty of government to protect the lives and property of citizens and secure the territorial integrity of the nation, the government has consistently made efforts to deal with the challenges of Boko Haram who have established their operational base somewhere between some states in the North-East of the country and the boundary with some of our neighbouring African countries.’’

He added: “Terrorism has become a global phenomenon and fighting it requires the co-operation of not just the entire citizens but the support of the international community.  The President is working on this.  In his recent visit to Borno and in a rally in Maiduguri few days ago, he assured the people that every inch of Nigerian soil currently under the control of insurgents will be recovered in no distant time.”

On how the government planned to deal with the nagging unemployment situation in the country, the PDP noted that it was a primary focus of the then administration “considering the various programmes designed and implemented since 2011; programmes such as SURE-P, YouWin, Agricultural and Industrial transformation, including the railways that have generated massive employment opportunities for Nigerians.”
The letter added: “The President intends to sustain the tempo and improve on existing records.”

On “reduction of recurrent expenditure and increase in capital expenditure”, he explained, “This is an area that the President is not only ready to give a critical look at but he is also prepared to welcome new ideas and positive contributions from leaders of the SDP.”

Out of the N260 million which Anenih allegedly received from Dasuki, Falae has admitted getting N100 million, just as the Accord Party admitted getting the same sum from him to prosecute the last elections in favour of Jonathan.

A former Political Adviser to former President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, also confirmed getting N63 from Anenih for political advocacy in the north. Unaccounted for is an extra N177 million Anenih said he spent from his pocket.

Acting EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, told journalists yesterday that while Isa had begun the process of refunding the money in his possession, Metuh had refused to do it.
? ‘‘From the records, Metuh got over N400 million. He has not said anything because we need the money to be returned so that it will be used for public good,” Magu said.

He continued: “What Dasuki gave Isa was N170 million and he admitted receiving the money. He was with us for four to five days and then he made a deposit of N100 million and entered an undertaking to bring the rest. That does not mean we will not prosecute him. But Metuh, instead of accepting to refund after admitting he collected money has preferred to go on strike.”

$2.1bn Arms Deal Scandal: Why We Have Not Arrested Jonathan – EFCC

Acting Chairman of EFCC Ibrahim Magu says the agency is yet to arrest former President Goodluck Jonathan because no document has been traced to Jonathan giving any approval for the disbursement of the money for any purpose other than arms purchase.

Speaking at a meeting he had with online publishers in Lagos yesterday January 11th, Magu said all those that have been arrested and questioned in connection with the arms deal scandal were people who disbursed or collected money for reasons other than the purchase of arms and ammunition. “All approvals by former president Jonathan did not mention that it was for political purposes” he said.

PDP Leadership Asks Jonathan To Speak Up On The $2.1bn Arms Deal Scandal

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Abdulahi Jalo, has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to speak out on the current $2.1 billion arms deal scandal. At a press conference in Abuja yesterday January 11th, Jalo said President Jonathan is still alive and should speak up on whether he authorized the former NSA Sambo Dasuki to disburse the money that was meant for the purchase of arms.

“As all of you know, no single kobo can be spent by the Federal Government without an act of the National Assembly. Money earmarked for arms purchase, some people diverted it to something else.
So many people that you cannot even expect were involved. Now, darkness has come to light. Jonathan is alive, he should clarify whether he asked the National Security Adviser to divert money meant to fight Boko Haram into his campaign. I’m from the North-East and I know the terrible security situation our people are facing there.

The money was meant to fight Boko Haram, and we all know that you can’t rule without peace. Now darkness has given way for the light. It was not only members of the PDP that shared the money; members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Accord Party and the Social Democratic Party, among others, also shared.

At least, Chief Olu Falae is not a member of the PDP. All of them should return the money. Then, (former) President Jonathan must speak on it. He is still alive. Has he ever said anything like this to Dasuki, ‘go and take from the money meant for the war against Boko Haram and share for my campaign’? It is time for him to speak up.”he said

BBOG To March To Villa To Demand For The Release Of Chibok Girls

The advocacy group for the release of the Chibok girls, Bring Back Our Girls Group BBOG, will be matching to the Presidential villa on Jan. 14th to continue their demand for the release of the Chibok girls. Leader of the group and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, while speaking at the group’s daily sit-out in Abuja yesterday January 6th, said the need for the march is born out of the recent remarks made by President Buhari during his media chat that the Nigerian govt has no credible intelligence about the Chibok girls.

“After our meeting with the President, we had promised not to disperse but continue to meet until the girls are back. But the feed back we got from the government, did not encourage us. It kept saying that there was no credible intelligence about the girls. On January 14, 2016, we will walk all the way to the Villa and we will remind the president of the promise he made in the Villa during our meeting with him and also during his inauguration and every time he spoke about our Chibok girls. We will remind him that if there is anybody that will be uncomfortable that the girls are not yet rescued, it should be him,” she said

Five Men Arrested In Bayelsa Over Attempt To Attack Jonathan’s Home

According to the police in Bayelsa, they have arrested five people over an alleged plan to attack former president Jonathan’s home in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

According to reports, the five men were arrested at a hotel close to the former president’s house as they put their plans in motion. Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Asinim Butswat, said;

“On the January 6, 2016, based on a tip-off, detectives from the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Vice unit
stormed a hotel premises in Swali community, Yenagoa, and arrested five suspects. The suspects are Asupha Emeka, 34, Ebipre Ebebi, 25, Samuel Joe, 27, Okilo Matthew, 25, and Timiere Matthew, 25”

The spokesperson didn’t say why the men plotted to attack Jonathan’s home but many believe it could be part of a plot to create tension in the state ahead of a supplementary election in southern Ijaw local government.

The spokesperson said the suspects are currently being interrogated.

“How I Shared N260million From Dasuki” – PDP Chieftain Tony Anenih

The last may not have been heard of how funds were disbursed into the bank accounts of some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The latest report is that of former Board of Trustees (BOT) chair Tony Anenih who has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), explaining how he disbursed the N260 million paid into his bank account from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The anti-graft agency is investigating this as it believes the N260million came from the misappropriated $2.1 billion arms funds.

According to the letter Anenih wrote to the EFCC, he said he gave N63 million to a group coordinated by a former Special Assistant to former President Shehu Shagari (National Assembly
Liaison), Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, for the 2015 presidential election. The Edo-born elder statesman however noted in the letter that he didn’t benefit from the money, but only shared it as he was instructed to. Anenih’s letter is coming less than 24 hours after PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh was grilled for 9 hours and has been detained over an alleged N1.4billion traced to a company in which he has a stake.

Brutus Ijigbami: President Buhari, Our National Interest and Court Orders

Nigerians are very forgetful of the past. Nigeria, under the watch of the Fmr President, could not successful keep terror suspects in custody because prosecutors failed to prepare a case. We had a system where court orders and injunctions stalled corruption cases and made a mockery of our fight to defeat corruption and insecurity across the country. This time, we have an executive that is willing to stretch its constitutional powers to keep Nigeria safe and recoup stolen fund, yet we’re starting to paint the President as a dictator.
Kanu is a threat to our national security. In advanced societies, suspects are detained for issues as trivial as traffic offence to keep them in custody while a stronger case is put together, why must Nigeria be different? Societies with strong intelligence communities engage whatever means is takes to keep terrorists and extremists out of circulation, must ours be different? Indeed, there are global concerns with regards to ethical issues in national security and intelligence activities of nations; developing countries should not be singled out as if we are the only ones involved in such. Indeed, the primary responsibility of government is to ensure its people live neither in fear of terrorism, external aggression nor poverty and other factors that undermine their peace and safety while it also sustains the fundamental rights of its people. However, many advanced nations have passed through periods of national crisis when liberties were exchanged for greater security, the balance between both being restored after such crisis, and Nigeria is at that point right now.
Within the last 10-15 years, advanced nations have defied international charters against enhanced interrogation techniques, illegal rendition, detention without trial and all sort of measures all for the sake of national security. We have not resorted to this unlike advanced countries. We have not rendered our terror suspects to Niger, as the US did to Egypt for torture, we have not built illegal detention facilities in Chad, like the US in Cuba, Kanu has not accused our security agents of subjecting him to waterboarding, so what is the fury about? We understand you did what was necessary for the safety of innocent people, just as President Buhari is doing the same. Nnamdi Kanu’s illegal entrance into the country with equipment for the purpose of undermining our national security is enough to get us worried, and get a responsible President to act.
On the NIMASA ex-DG and Arms thieves, I doubt if there is any law in Nigeria or anywhere in the world that restrains the authorities from re-arresting a suspect on different charges after he/she has been granted bail on others. Hence, we should not have to blame the President for identifying measures within our laws to use against corrupt public office holders just to keep them from jumping bail. We had a soft-spoken, gentle-looking President whose lame duck attitude cost us $2.1 billion meant for the war on terror and drove us where we are today, but we have moved on. Now we have a stronger, more willing leader in President Buhari, and the best we can do is support him to do whatever is right and just to keep us on the path of prosperity and security again.
As Nigerians we must understand that security is a collective task that requires the mutual cooperation of every citizen, and the understanding that our liberties will not be compromised as long as we remain law abiding and do not act in ways that endanger others, as Dasuki Sambo and his partners are alleged to have done to our soldiers and our  countrymen up North. We need to understand that a man that literally sneaked into the country using unconventional methods can sneak out using same methods; that we lack the intelligence capability to keep tabs on all suspects, and just like in past cases, corrupt public office holders may escape justice by choosing not to return to Nigeria if they are allowed to pursue whatever medical excuses abroad and extradition is not as easy as it appears. We are protected as law-abiding citizens, and we have in President Buhari what we have always desired, an active man with a great political will to frustrate corrupt public office holders, a step below President Buhari’s present level of high-handedness only brings us back to the era of impunity.

Chibok Girls Alive and Kicking, Says Journalist Ahmed Salkida

Ahmed Salkida, the only journalist known to have some access to the leadership of Boko Haram, has said credible sources have told him the Chibok girls are still alive, with some refusing to convert to Islam.

Over 250 schoolgirls were kidnapped from their dormitory in April 2014 and at least 219 of them are still believed to be in captivity, although there is yet no clue on their location.

But Salkida, in an op-ed for TheCable.ng, suggested that President Muhammadu Buhari should use state machinery to open up access to the militants rather than say he has no clue on the kidnapped girls whose abductions sparked off the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

Salkida wrote:

“Most of the Chibok girls, whether they are split into groups or not, are alive, multiple credible sources have told me, and if a deal to release them will weaken national security and endanger the entire country, then the federal government shouldn’t make a deal.

I am confident that Chibok girls and other captives can return to their families if the government is half as strong-willed as some of the girls in captivity that have refused to be married out or give up their faith.

The girls would have never backed out of any process, no matter how irritating it is. They would stay on and negotiate hard until they get a deal that will earn them their freedom and stop such abductions so that no one else can ever witness their woeful plight.”

Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau – from whom nothing has been heard in the last 10 months — once released a video of the schoolgirls and said he had sold them off to marriage. All efforts to free the girls have failed.

Total Sum Buhari Will Spend Running State House Compared To Jonathan- Report

President Muhammadu Buhari will spend N18.1 billion in 2016 to run the State House, Nigeria’s seat of power, an amount that is N11.5 billion more than what his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, spent in 2015.

The amount is also N5.9 billion more than what Mr. Jonathan spent in 2014 on the State House,  according to the details of the 2016 budget.

Mr. Buhari will, however, reduce the cost of feeding for the first and second families, when compared to what the Jonathan administration spent in previous years.

Mr. Buhari presented a N6.08 trillion budget to the National Assembly last week, promising more jobs, economic growth and a cut-down on frivolous spending. But details of the budget show that the State House will cumulatively receive N18.1 billion in 2016.

In 2014, Mr. Jonathan spent N12.2 billion on the State House, while in 2015, the government spent N6.6 billion for the presidential office, amid dwindling revenue occasioned by sliding oil prices.

The costs cover the State House Headquarters, the president’s office and the office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. They also cover the budgets of the State House medical centre and the Lagos Liaison office.

Jonathan’s Administration Triggered Soldiers Into Mutiny – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, in an interview he granted the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation has accused the past administration led by Goodluck Jonathan of provoking soldiers to go into mutiny for sending them to battlefields without arms and ammunition. The President said;

“We investigated and discovered how funds that were pencilled down for arms procurement were diverted and shared by government officials who served the last administration.

“The government at that time sent the soldiers to the battlefield without arms and ammunition to prosecute the war. That was what led some of them to mutiny. They were arrested and detained because of this.”

Speaking on the December deadline given to the Nigerian Army to win the war against Boko Haram, Buhari said;

“If people are going to be fair to us, they themselves know that the Army is winning the war. You can no longer find any huge number of Boko Haram members in Adamawa and Yobe; only may be, in about three local governments of Borno in the area around our borders with Chad Republic. They are no longer in position to threaten the country, so we have won,” he added.

He also spoke about the arrest and ongoing prosecution of arms scandal suspects. Buhari said the government would use documents that were already in its possession to prove to the courts that the suspects stole and their ill-gotten wealth would be confiscated and they would be jailed.

Gunmen Abduct Jonathan’s Cousin

Less than 24 hours after four armed gunmen kidnapped Governor Henry Seriake Dickson’s sister, Nancy Kemerovo Dickson, another set of armed men have abducted cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

She is the Commissioner for Local Government in Dickson’s government.

Investigations indicated that the woman, identified only as Mrs Otazi, was kidnapped in Ewoi community, Ogbia Local Government area of Bayelsa State.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the community Sunday afternoon and went for their target.

Police Public Relations Office (PPRO) of Bayelsa State police command, Mr Ansim Butwats who confirmed the  incident, however, said police are investigating the matter to know the identity of the woman.

A top security source said Mrs Otazi is Jonathan’s relative and that security operatives are already investigating the incident.

Buhari Denies Receiving $300,000 Compensation From Jonathan For Boko Haram’s Attack On Convoy

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to claims he received a compensation of $300,000 from former President Goodluck Jonathan after Boko Haram terrorists attacked his convoy in Kaduna last year.

In a statement by Femi Adesina, his special adviser on media and publicity, Mr. Buhari said he received “nothing untoward, illegal or tending to corruption” from Mr. Jonathan before or after the attack.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to reports making the rounds, especially on internet-based media, that President Muhammadu Buhari received $300,000.00 and up to five armoured SUVs from the Office of the National Security Adviser in the aftermath of the attack on his convoy in Kaduna last year.

“We unequivocally deny that President Buhari received $300,000.00 or any monetary compensation whatsoever from the Jonathan Presidency or any of its officials, in the aftermath of that attack, or at any other time since then.

“While it is true that one armoured SUV and one untreated SUV were sent to the President in the aftermath of the attack, the vehicles were in keeping with his entitlements as a former Head of State under the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (And other Ancillary Matters) Decree of 1999.

“Section 3, Sub Section 1 of that Decree provides that three vehicles will be provided for former heads of state and replaced every four years.

“There was therefore nothing untoward, illegal or tending to corruption in former Head of State Buhari and Presidential aspirant, as he then was, receiving vehicles, to which he was statutorily entitled , from the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

Arms Deal Fraud ‘I Was Acting On Jonathan’s Instructions’ – Dasuki Says

Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki who is being investigated in the current $2.1bn arms deal scandal, allegedly said that he handed N10 billion he withdrew from CBN to the former President Jonathan’s Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa & Aide-de-Camp on Jonathan’s instruction.

According to The Nation, Dasuki stated this while defending himself in a statement of Witness /Accused Person which has been filed in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of his arraignment soon. The statement reads;

“I wish to state as follows: That I have been publicly indicted and any statement may jeopardise my defence. Having been briefed by the EFCC investigators on why I was invited, I will answer the
charges in court. As such, I do not wish to make any further statement on the matter. That I am aware in November (I cannot remember the exact date), my office requested the CBN to exchange N10billion from the account of the Office of National Security Adviser domiciled in CBN. The money was exchanged at $47m and some Euros which I cannot remember. The exact amount was delivered at my residence. The money was for delegates that attended the nomination convention for the PDP. Presidential nomination. The money was paid and sent to Hon. (Waripamowei) Dudafa (SSAP Household) and ADC(C-IC) for distribution on the instruction of the President. Based on the statement of Director of Finance and administration (Salisu), Ibrahim Wambai, and Yazidu Ibrahim, all the cash (both foreign and local) are usually given to them for official use. I also noted the statement of Sagir Bafarawa whose company is Dalhatu Investment which he stated that he received the sum of N4,633,000,000 from the account of the Office of the NSA. I authorised the payment . The money was for vehicles, motorcycles for youth empowerment and women sent to Saudi Arabia. I got the proposal from the President. I do not have the proposal; it should be at the office in the Villa. I have seen the statement of the Zenith Bank account where N5billion was paid. I authorised the following payments, among others: Jabbama Ada Global Nigeria Limited (N400m); R.R. Hospital (N750m); ACACIA Holdings LTD (N1.25b); Barr. I.M. Bala (N150m); African Cable TV (N 350m); Nigerian Defence Academy (N159m); B.B. (N350m); Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (N125,503, 255.11); Coscharis Motors (N119m). “The payments were meant for various partners as earlier listed. I know Basha Nigeria Limited to be owned by Hon. Bello Matawalle. I authorided the payment of N380million for further disbursement to members of the House of Representatives as campaign contribution. I authorised the payment of N751million to HEIRS BDC Limited for conversion to forex from the account of the NSA. Money was used for operation in the Office of the NSA. I have seen the mandate from the CBN signed by me authorising payment of various sums of money to Dalhatu Investment for the reasons earlier stated. In respect of funds given to Amb. Bashir Yuguda between December 2014 and 2015, I authorised the payment of N1.5billion from the Office of the National Security Adviser for political campaign in the last elections. I remember paying DAAR Communications the sum of N2.120billion from ONSA for media activities for the Presidential Campaign 2015.”

Dasuki confirmed also payment of $146,639019.00 to E-Force Inter-Service Ltd
“I do not have any company registered in my name, I have no account with HSBC. All payments  made from NSA accounts within the period I was there were authorised by me.
The CBN confirmed that the N10billion was sourced from the CBN/ OAGF Signature Bonus Account.
The CBN made the clarification in an October 29, 2015 letter to the EFCC’s Director of Operations.
“Your letter ref: EFCC/EC/ CBN/ 12/163 dated  21st September 2915 to the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and the directive by the management that we provide some explanations, we wish to state as follows:
“The N10billion constitutes two tranches of N5.08billion each debited to the CBN/OAGF SIGNATURE BONUS ACCOUNT NO 400225220 vide OAGF memo Ref: FD/LP2015/1/28 DF to the  Office of the National Security Adviser A/C Number 20172241019 with the CBN Abuja  and the second was for credit into the account of National Security Adviser Account Number 1014199287 with Zenith Bank Plc Wuse II Abuja. The transactions were consummated  on November 10, 2014. The mandate that authorized the withdrawal of USD47.0m was from the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA) with REF: NSA/366/S dated November 26, 2014. The mandate was processed for dollar cash payment to Mr. S. A. Salisu on November 27,  2014. The USD5.0M was via a memo from the ONSA memo REF: ACCT/86/VOL. 2/ 218 dated November 13, 2014. The National Security Adviser Account Number 20172241019 was debited  and dollar cash payment made to Mr. Wambai Ibrahim on November 14, 2014 in line with the mandate. The Euro 4.0m and Euro 1.6m transactions were via mandate from ONSA memo REF: NASS/ 366/S dated November 26, 2014.
The CBN Governor was responding to a letter ( EFCC/EC/CBN/12/163) of 21st September, 2015 by former EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde.
The three-paragraph letter said: “ This commission is investigating a case of Abuse of Office and money laundering of funds for special services by the Office of the National Security Adviser which were withdrawn  in November 2014. We seek your kind assistance to provide available information on the disbursement of the funds with copies of relevant documents, including transfers to foreign and local banks and cash withdrawals. Thank you in anticipation of your usual cooperation.”
A Staff Officer Account 1 in the Office of the NSA, Yazidu Ibrahim said in his statement as follows: ” I can testify that in the last five years, for all the companies that were paid, VAT and Withholding Tax were never paid for any contract. Also, to the best of my knowledge, there is no tenders board and procurement unit at the NSA. The awarding authority for all contracts, remains the NSA. All payments for contracts are (sic) based on directive from the  DFA. Sometimes, there were accompanying documents  most times, there was nothing except account details of contractors. In the last five years, the SAS imprest account has been passed and ONSA is getting direct funding from the government. I want to state as follows: many of the contracts were fake because the payment were round figures. (2), many of the payments were related to the 2015 presidential elections and not for national security. Many of the cash payments were just looted. Many people in the ruling PDP got huge sums of money. The SAS imprest account is an account maintained by the NSA and the Permanent Secretary, Special Service Office. This is where money for the intelligence community is first paid before sharing between the ONSA, NSA and DSS.”he said.

I Was Acting On Jonathan’s Instructions- Dasuki

Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki has said he handed over the N10billion given to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nomination convention delegates to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa and the Aide-de-Camp.

He said the money was given out by the two aides, on the directive of Dr. Jonathan.

The former NSA said aside collecting the  cash, he had nothing to do with it.

As at press time, no slush funds had been traced to Dasuki’s personal accounts, it was learnt.

Dasuki, who protested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had subjected him to “media trial”, said such a treatment might jeopardise his defence.

Also yesterday, it was gathered that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) confirmed that the N10 billion was sourced from the Signature Bonus Account (oil block Account).

But the ex-NSA expressed regrets that he was being vilified by the EFCC when he acted on the instructions and approval of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

He said he had no foreign account and his local accounts are in Skye bank Plc, GTB and Standard Chartered Bank.

PDP, Jonathan Almost Destroyed Nigeria – El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Friday said the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government inherited a country at the tip of failure from the Peoples Democratic Party when President Muhammadu Buhari was inaugurated on May 29, 2015.

He said the kind of underhand dealings that went unchallenged under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan are stranger than fiction.

El-Rufai spoke at the opening of a three-day retreat organised for State House correspondents in Kaduna.

The retreat with the theme, “Journalism and the change mantra, State House in focus”  is orgnised by the Presidency and is being hosted by the Kaduna State Government.

In his speech titled “The choices before the State House Press Corps in enabling change,” the governor said consequences of the incompetence and thievery that reigned under Jonathan are only becoming clear to all.

He said the PDP simply ran the nation’s economy aground in what he called its 16 years of imperial rule.

He said, “The responsibility that has been thrust in the hands of the new government is immense. The APC inherited a country at the tip of failure.

“As is becoming clearer by the day, some of the things that went on under the previous government are stranger than fiction.

“The consequences of the incompetence, the thievery and the divisive ethos that reigned are only becoming clear.

“Nigerians are only beginning to realise that the Jonathan government, despite years of $100 oil, was borrowing to pay salaries. The PDP simply ran this economy aground.

“Our party and our president will do their level best to pick up the pieces, restore economic vitality and make life better for Nigerians.”

The governor however said that spirit of determination and commitment to positive change has to be actively shared by a critical mass of Nigerians.

He said change cannot abide when after voting out the PDP at the centre, Nigerians retain the party’s ways and habits.

He noted that journalism has an important role in the change mantra.

The governor said, “Tough decisions are on the horizon. Will the media afford a platform for a fair discussion of the tough choices that are looming?

“As the quest for accountability continues, will the narrative seek to uphold the public interest, or will it side with the formidable artillery corruption can deploy in its attempt to fight back.

“The choice before us is whether you help corruption to fight back, enabling the corrupt to protect their ill-acquired privileges or help the Buhari administration foster accountability and further the public interest.

“It is a stark choice between instant gratification of getting a piece of the corruption or sacrificing that for a better today and a more secure, fairer and prosperous tomorrow for our children.”

Stop Blaming Jonathan For Insecurity In North-East, Murray Bruce Tells Buhari

The Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray Bruce, yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop blaming his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, for Nigeria’s problems, and urged the government to instead focus on delivering democracy dividends.

He was reacting to an allegation made last Wednesday by the president that the past administration was responsible for the continuing insecurity as a result of widespread diversion of funds meant for the purchase of arms.

Writing on his twitter handle yesterday, Murray Bruce said: “This is seven months in the life of this government. We have heard that our problems were caused by the last administration. Okay. Now let’s hear of solutions.

“If we keep driving this car called Nigeria by looking at our rear-view mirror, it wont be long before we crash. Let’s focus on the road ahead.”

‘Jonathan Would Have Ruined Nigeria If He Was Re-Elected’ – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka yesterday during a programme titled, ‘Channels Book Club’ on Channels Television said that Nigerians made a good choice of voting Good Luck Jonathan out, else the country would have been ruined if he was allowed to rule for another four years. Soyinka said he is happy that he encouraged people to vote for Buhari, because his Government can’t be anyway compared to that of Jonathan. He said;

“We were left with two credible contestants in terms of catchment area for the nation. We had reached, in my view, the bottom. I became convinced that if this country underwent four more years under President Jonathan, the country would run aground completely. I looked at the record and said
this cannot go on, this has to stop.

“Then I looked at this man who had contested elections three times before and said he would not contest anymore and then decided to throw his hat in the ring. I talked to people and I said do you know what you’re doing?

“And after weighing all the options, I said let’s try a new one. And since in electoral terms, he was the one, I guardedly, with reservations, announced that no, not a continuation under Jonathan.

“And so very reluctantly, I want this on record, because I made it quite clear, I weighed the two of them and I said this nation stands a better chance under Buhari. And what has been coming out now? Look at all that has been coming out? Look at the figures (loot) which virtually hammer one into the ground just the sheer enormity of the robbery of this nation that is getting exposed progressively. It shows that we did not make a bad choice.”

Jonathan Was Inexperienced, Not Incompetent — IBB

FORMER military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, has disagreed with critics of former President Goodluck Jonathan who described him as incompetent saying Jonathan was rather “inexperienced” rather than “incompetent.”

General Babangida who spoke with The Interview magazine in the December 2015 edition which is currently on sale argued that Jonathan who lost his re-election bid in March “is a very pleasant person” and that he believed the former president meant well for the country.
Asked about the perception that Jonathan is a good person but was “incompetent”, Babangida replied:
“If you use inexperience, I will buy that.”
The retired general spoke on a wide range of issues, including the botched coup of 1990 and how his late wife, Maryam, woke him up in the middle of the night to alert him about the movement of troops at Dodan Barracks, which was the seat of power then. He denied that his life was saved by Sani Abacha, who was then the chief of army staff, and also denied reports that he hid in a bunker while the coup plotters were looking for him.
“They obviously didn’t have a lot of experience,” Babangida recalled. “It was during the fasting period. We were still in Dodan Barracks then. My wife got up from sleep and said she had noticed very unusual movement of troops from one end to the other. So she woke me up and said I should look through the window.
”I found troops moving from one end to the other. The next thing I heard was shooting going on. We tried to put a small party together. It was about 1.30am. Then the guards, the bodyguards said let’s check out of this place. I was a bit stubborn. I told them I was not leaving. It didn’t occur to me that we had a bunker at Dodan Barracks. We had, but it didn’t occur to me to use it. And so, they came. I said the only thing I would concede to, I would evacuate my family. My wife had her last born, who was just a few months old, with her. So they evacuated them to a safe house.
“So, I remained with a few bodyguards. We decided to get out and move around. We went to a safe house around Surulere. I had a bodyguard, Omuah. We just moved in there. From there, we established communication. I later established communication with Abacha, Raji Rasaki (who was governor of Lagos then) and the other. They had mobilised their troops.”
He maintained that “Abacha didn’t save my life in the Orkar coup. We worked together to crush Orkar’s coup.”

$2b Arms Deal: EFCC Confronts Dasuki, Dokpesi and Co. With Evidence Of Transactions

The special team raised by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the disbursement of $2.2 billion arms contract deal in the office of the former National Security Adviser, yesterday, confronted the major suspects with evidence of their illicit transactions.

The 27-member task force, which has Ibrahim Magu as a member, spent most part of the day to grill the suspects and asked them to speak up on any aspect of the transactions where their names or those who allegedly fronted for them, appeared.

The extended questioning of the high profile suspects, our correspondent learned, was to prepare the
ground for their arraignment this week.

However, Vanguard could not obtain a specific date of the week when the suspects are likely to be docked and the specific charges to be pressed against them.

It was gathered that the commission had outsmarted the key suspects by first securing a court order to detain them beyond the stipulated 48-hour threshold, thereby making it more difficult for their lawyers to secure their early release.

A top source said most of the suspects, who had earlier attempted to deny their involvement in the arms deal, were dumbfounded when confronted with concrete evidence of all the transactions they had made in the office of the ex-NSA.

“Many of the suspects, who were claiming ignorance of collecting huge sums of money from the office of the ex-NSA, were tongue tied when we brought them to face each other. I think they will soon appear in court to tell the world why they went to the ONSA to sign and collect huge sums of public money that was not meant for the purposes they were given,” an EFCC source said.

Dokpesi Disagrees with Earlier Statement

Apparently to clear the name of their patriarch, the family of Daar Communications owner, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, on Saturday, disagreed with an earlier statement the company released claiming that it got the $2.1 billion from the office of the ex-NSA for media and publicity work for the 2015 election.

In the latest statement released, weekend, the family turned around to say that the $2.1 billion was personally approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan for a holding company owned by Dokpesi following a private presentation by the owner to Jonathan.

The family also said that contrary to claims that the money was collected in respect of promoting the People’s Democratic Party’s campaign to win the 2015 polls, it was actually meant to showcase the under reported achievements of President Jonathan’s government.

Vanguard learned last night that the EFCC was making efforts to charge the suspects to court so as to free its holding facilities for more suspects who are to be taken up for massive looting of public funds in the last dispensation.

The cells of the anti-graft agency in Abuja are said to be almost overwhelmed with suspects arrested and detained in connection with the arms deals, for which the Presidency has vowed to press to a logical conclusion to prove to Nigerians that many top Nigerians looted the public treasury under the guise of buying arms and ammunition to fight terrorism.

Jonathan Commissions 1st Bayelsa Flyover

A former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has commissioned a flyover to be constructed in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

The flyover project was executed by the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson’s restoration government.

Performing the commissioning ceremony on Monday, the former President said that the construction of the flyover had given the state capital a face lift and had upgraded Yenagoa from a town to an emerging city.

According to him, the Governor’s political will to embark on such a daring project revealed his love for the growth and development of the state.

The project is poised to bring relief to the usual traffic gridlock experienced along the Ox-Bow Lake axis of the state capital which is one of the star projects of the present administration.

Also commissioned is the Azikoro Road dualisation project which brought respite to road users in the heart of the state capital.

“Northern Muslim Elites Are Hypocrites, They Laid Foundation For Boko Haram” – Bishop Kukah

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has accused some northern Islamic elites of indirectly sponsoring the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents.
Speaking on ‘the Muslim agenda for Nigeria: challenges of development and good governance’ at a conference organised by the Islamic Welfare Foundation at the Fountain University, Osogbo, Kukah said the fresh agitation for an Islamic state by Boko Haram could be traced to the promise made by northern leaders to ensure the total implementation of Sharia law.
He said, “A hypocritical elite continues to believe that it can claim the benefits of democracy but use it only to consolidate its hold on power. This is what has laid the foundation for what is now Boko

Haram.

“We must locate the current crisis of Boko Haram within the context of the inability of the northern Muslim elite to live by their own dubious creed of being Muslims. They preached Sharia Law but only for the poor. They preach a religion that encourages education, yet their own people are held in the bondage of ignorance.
“They did not wish to live by the same standards, so they decided to live their own Islam in the capitals of the world away from the prying eyes of their own people. Boko Haram began as a revolt against this mendacity, subterfuge and hypocrisy.”
“Now, I hear Muslims in northern Nigeria hiding under the cover of the facts by saying: ‘These Boko Haram people are not Muslims. They do not represent us’. Well, first, they are your own children. You must take responsibility for what has made them what they are today and to the rest of society.
“They claim they have been inspired by the Quran and no other holy book. They say they want to build an Islamic state. So, they are Muslims. After all, from the debates of the Constituent Assemblies of 1979, 1988, and 1995 and beyond, did their fathers and grandfathers not stage walkouts, demanding Sharia Law?
“The promise to institute Sharia has become the most potent tool for political mobilisation and organisation. Till date, the tactics may have changed, but the essence has not. Rather than face the tough questions of how and why over 15 million children in the northern states are on the streets; how and why the northern states are falling behind on almost every index of development, the northern Muslim elite continues to live for just the moment, with no plans for tomorrow.
“Should we pretend that a society that allows the forced marriages of its young daughters could frown on the idea of a group kidnapping and forcing young girls into sexual slavery? Islam must have an honest look at the mirror and have an internal discussion”, he stated.
The Catholic cleric urged northern leaders to stop pretending as if they did not know the root cause of Boko Haram.
He said they should ask themselves why Boko Haram was ‘headquartered’ in the North and not in other zones of the country.
“It is my considered view that northern Islam has to confront the realities of taking its religion into the modern world of democracy seriously. Muslims in northern Nigeria cannot accept democracy and reject the inclusive nature of its philosophy as it is the case today”, he added.

Roli Bode George Becomes Acting Chairman Of NDLEA

Roli Bode George, the wife of PDP Chieftain, Bode George has assumed office as the acting Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA. Her appointment comes after the former chairman of the anti-drug agency Ahmadu Giade retired from office on Wednesday November 25th after serving the agency for 10 years.
Giade handed over to the Roli Bode-George in a parade at the Ikoyi headquarters, Lagos. Roli was appointed DG of the agency in June 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“I Did Not Award Any $2 Billion Arms Procurement Contract” – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied claims by former NSA Sambo Dasuki that he awarded a $2 billion arms procurement contract while he was in office. Jonathan stated his position on the controversy surrounding arms procurement investigative panel, while speaking at a forum in Washington DC, yesterday November 19th

“I did not award any $2 billion contract for procurement of weapons. Where did the money come from?” he said

In a statement on Wednesday November 18th, Dasuki alleged that he bought some weapons worth over $2 billion which was approved by the former President. He also dismissed allegations that $59.8 million was stolen just a year before the end of his government

“In Nigeria, if you lose $59.8 million in a year, federal and state governments will not pay salaries. Of course we brought international audit teams, forensic auditors and they didn’t see that,” he said.

I Did Not Award $2Billion Contract For Arms Procurement- Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan at a forum in Washington DC, Thursday, waded into the arms procurement scandal surrounding the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, saying his government never awarded any contract in the range of $2 billion dollars.

“I did not award any $2 billion contract for procurement of weapons” Mr. Jonathan stated categorically querying, “Where did the money come from?” and repeating emphatically that “I did not award a contract of $2billion for procurement of weapons”.

A presidential investigations committee into arms procurement under the administration of President Jonathan revealed in its interim report that it found extra-budgetary spending by the Jonathan administration to the tune of N643.8 billion and an additional $2.2 billion in the foreign currency component, all managed and supervised by Sambo Dasuki, a retired army colonel.

Mr. Dasuki had said in a statement Wednesday that all contracts and accruing payments were made based on the approval of Mr. Jonathan, adding that due process and military procurement regulations were followed in all the transactions.

Jonathan’s Men Sponsoring Pro-Biafran Protests– The Igbo Conscience Group

A pan-Igbo group, The Igbo Conscience, says some former political office holders who served in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were behind the Biafran revolt.

The TIC said this was why the protests gained momentum immediately after Jonathan was defeated at the poll.

The leader of the group, Mr. Monday Ubani, who is a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch, said this at a news conference in Lagos on Wednesday.

Ubani noted that during Jonathan’s administration, many Igbo politicians were given juicy appointments.

He, however, added that the appointments did not improve the standard of living of the people of the South-East.

He said, “As recently as six months ago, the Igbo occupied and boasted of occupying prime positions in the country during the six years of President Jonathan’s rule. Why is it that immediately after the defeat of the past regime in March, the cries of Igbo marginalisation rose to high heavens with slanderous allegations against the President-elect?

“What were the merits the Ndigbo derived from this much-vaunted strategic placing in critical positions for six years? Should the Igbo be crying of marginalisation just a few months after sitting on the upper echelons of the country’s political and economic spheres if these political beneficiaries benefitted the Ndigbo with their positions?

“Should roads and other facilities in the South-East be as dilapidated as they are today if we benefitted from these former office holders, some of whom are sponsoring the present agitations?”

Ubani said many Igbo youths had been brainwashed into believing that secession was the only way to address national problems.

He said even the late leader of the defunct Republic of Biafra, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said that the Biafran struggle was a “struggle of the mind and not a physical one.”

He noted that countries like Pakistan and South Sudan, which seceded from India and Sudan respectively, had not fared better even after attaining independence.

He, therefore, urged the protesting youths to have a rethink.

Ubani said the philosophy of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra was at variance with Ojukwu’s and that was why the late Igbo leader never identified with MASSOB.

He said the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was an impostor and did not have the interests of the Igbo at heart.

Amir Abdulazeez: As PDP Continues To Mock Reality…….

Any proponent of competitive democracy and any advocate against one-party state would like to see the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) remain strong and vibrant enough to keep the ruling All Progressives’ Congress on its toes. Probably, only a fanatical APC sympathizer would like to see PDP become extinct in the current situation. The role of a strong opposition in a democracy cannot be overemphasized and without opposition, democracy becomes autocracy.

Many neutrals have recently began to have sympathy for the PDP neither because the party deserves such nor because it is showing signs of deserving such any soon, but because it is the only party that is in a strong position to keep APC on its toes-something the governing party itself needs to checkmate complacency. However, the question is: does the PDP have as much sympathy for itself? Apparently it doesn’t, because many of the party’s actions tend to de-market the party rather than promoting it.

No matter how well outsiders wish to see things go for PDP, it won’t be possible if the major stakeholders within the party are not willing to put their acts together. If there were other viable opposition options apart from PDP, majority of Nigerians would most likely go for them and back any among them to become the major opposition party in the country. Alas! There is none and considering what it takes to build a formidable national political party or to transform a dormant one in Nigeria, we can say, there would be none at least for the time being, except if an unforeseen miracle-like situation happens.

After the 2015 General Elections, the question on the lips of Nigerians was: how would PDP manage defeat? Others asked whether PDP would bounce back and if yes, how and when? The problem we are facing in Nigerian politics is that political parties are almost solely judged based on electoral performance. Therefore, in the eyes of many, PDP would only be considered to have bounced back if it takes over from APC at the next polls. From the look of things, PDP itself also narrowly look at things that way. The truth is, if PDP can still remain in existence, strengthen its organs, engage in massive grassroots membership drive and followership, give the nation a rebranded and innovative opposition, retain its states and win some elusive states like Lagos and have a decent presidential election outing in 2019, that would be enough success even if they don’t win back the presidency in the next 8 years. The PDP should not be exclusively looking forward to winning elections, it should think of ways it can set the standards and become the epitome of internal democracy, de-commercialization and de-monetization of politics, inspiring political consciousness and awareness as well as ideology-based politicking.

Is PDP ready to bounce back? It depends on what we take ‘bounce back’ to mean. However, we take it, the answer is, the party has the potential to bounce back, but it is not yet ready. Virtually, all of the actions and inactions of the PDP stakeholders since after April 2015 suggests that they are not ready to bounce back even in the next 16 years. When you find yourself in the midst of a self-inflicted mess, the least that is required of you to get out of that mess is to even believe that you are in a mess, sincerely acknowledge the role you played in putting yourself in that mess followed by genuine repentance.

Time and again, the PDP through many of its notable chieftains still boasts that it is the largest party in Nigeria and it is still the only party that has presence everywhere including the remotest parts of the country. Even a small kid knows this is not true, but such is PDP’s arrogance even as an opposition party. When they were in power, they declared themselves the largest party in Africa without depending on any scientific yardstick. The PDP is presently a regional party confined mainly to the South-South and the South-East and the truth is that if free and fair elections had held in those regions, APGA, LP and to some extent APC would have occupied most of the seats, ‘elected’ PDP members are now occupying. One needs not to wonder why 70% of total annulled 2015 elections by the tribunals across the country so far are coming from the South-South and South-East.

The PDP has been the biggest loser in all the decided cases by the election petition tribunals so far. Instead of the party to tell itself some home truths, galvanize and see how they can salvage the situation to enhance their chances of winning the re-run elections, they are busy accusing the APC and the presidency of influencing tribunal judgements. Would PDP ever accept half of what transpired in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states as elections if they were not the beneficiaries? PDP is accusing the Presidency of judicial interference probably because that’s what they use to do when they were in power and hence they expect others to be doing the same. It looks like PDP’s game plan is to continue with this propaganda to blackmail the tribunals into succumbing to their pressure and prevent them from doing their jobs adequately. If the party is not careful, some of the victories it recorded in some tribunals might be upturned after the cases might have been carefully reviewed in the appeal and supreme courts.

The way PDP has been lamenting its defeat in the 2015 elections is very funny. How many times have PDP actually won elections? If free and fair elections had been taking place, the party would have since become history, probably since 2003 or 2007. PDP should cherish the fact they still exist with some relevance. They have spent the last 6 months lamenting and advancing reasons why they lost, whereas they knew deep in their hearts that the party seldom wins any election post 1999.

Almost two years after, the PDP has continued to call the people that left the party as betrayers, traitors and ingrates. Uptill today, they have failed to move forward on this. The party has refused to accept responsibility, not to talk of addressing the issues that led to the exit of such people. The PDP has forgotten that it has been the biggest beneficiary of defections since 1999. Arguably more than 90% of all defections from 2001 to 2010 have been in favour of the party and none of the then opposition parties refused to move forward and plan ahead because of this.

Another disgusting habit of the PDP is boasting and crediting itself with Nigeria’s 16 years of uninterrupted democratic rule. This is childish and akin to a scenario where the military begins to boast and ask Nigerians to thank it for not carrying out a single coup since 1999. PDP are fond of making vague statements; nothing could have happened to Nigeria’s democracy with or without PDP. In fact the PDP-led Federal Government should be blamed of threatening democracy by supervising some of the worst elections in Nigeria’s history. If we may ask, how willing was the PDP government to allow the 2015 elections hold? How can a party known for one of the worst records on internal democracy entrench any democracy elsewhere?

Some PDP chieftains who have not completely lost touch with reality like their colleagues have admitted that the party has done so many political wrongs even if they refuse to agree that the party had failed to bring any meaningful development to the country. In short, the believe PDP has done very well in terms of governance. The question we should ask them is, between infrastructure, power, health, employment, Security, Agriculture and poverty, what single sector can the PDP point out to have achieved 75% success to justify the money it spent in 16 years? Where then is the development? PDP’s mistake is that, they keep judging themselves on inputs instead of results.

One other issue is PDP’s over celebration of the emergence of Ike Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President in an APC controlled government and citing it as ‘first in Africa’ and an indication of good things to come. First and foremost, what would have been the chances of Ekweremadu in that election if all 109 senators were around in the Senate Chambers when the election for the post of Deputy Senate President took place? Would he have contested? Hardly. Therefore, PDP cowardly took advantage of a situation courtesy of APC’s blundering and misjudgement. Morally, PDP should not have allowed any of its members to contest for any principal office in the National Assembly because in its 16 years rule, it gave no one any chance. It seems, PDP wants to become a ruling and an opposition party at the same time. This is evident as, it also wanted the Deputy Speakership of the House. One thing PDP doesn’t understand is that it is shooting itself in the foot. With the party holding the Deputy Senate Presidency, it is officially part of the Federal Government and must therefore partly bear the burdens of its wrongs.

It is a welcome development that the PDP organized a National Reform Conference that is aimed at rebranding and reshaping the party for future challenges. The problem however is that the aim of the conference seems to have been defeated already. Instead of PDP to concentrate on using the conference for self-assessment and rebranding strategies, speakers took turns and wasted useful time and energy in using it as an opportunity for bashing the APC and the President. There would be many upcoming tangible things to criticize Buhari’s government on and there would be ample time to do so, but PDP seem to be in a desperate hurry as if that is what will help it reclaim past glory.

The APC is the least of PDP’s worries currently. APC has many shortcomings and it will gather many more baggage as the journey continues, but no matter how bad the APC becomes, Nigerians may likely stick with it in 2019 if PDP refuses to truly reform itself and move away from its past. PDP should deal with itself and Nigerians would do the rest by dealing with APC. The PDP must be ready to present itself as an alternative which Nigerians can trust in the event of an APC failure. The PDP should look inwards and try to reform, re-shape and rebrand itself from a party with the image of impunity and cheating to that of justice and fairness and thereafter re-present itself to Nigerians. This would be better than mocking reality and the continuation to live in denial.

Fielding Jonathan For Election Was An Error- PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday admitted that presenting former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole candidate for the May 29 presidential election was an error.

Addressing journalists at a media parley in Abuja, the Chairman of the party’s National Conference Organising Committee, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said the PDP ought to have stuck to its zoning arrangement, adding that the fundamental mistake the party made was the breach of its power shift pact in 2011.

He said when President Umaru Musa Ya’Adua died in office, the party should have allowed somebody from the North to complete his tenure, instead of settling for Jonathan from the South as its presidential candidate in 2011.

Dokpesi also argued that when it was expected that the party would field a northern candidate for the March 2015 election, but party leaders unanimously adopted Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate, a decision he said led to the party’s defeat at the elections.

He also explained that the party, in the build up to the last general election, failed to uphold internal democracy, adding that there was impunity, imposition of candidates, breach of the zoning arrangement, and the absence of a level playing field for members.

President Buhari has pledged to respect the independence of the electoral body – INEC, promising that he would not interfere with its functions.

The President made the pledge while swearing in the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in the council chamber.

He observed that all Nigerians have a responsibility to safeguard the sanctity of democracy including transparent electoral process, free and fair elections.

The President also decried a situation where elections are cancelled without investigations into what led to such cancellations so as to prosecute offenders. He stated that perpetrators of electoral violence should be made to face the full weight of the law.

SURE-P: Senate Asks Buhari To Probe Jonathan

Citing  mismanagement of funds, the Senate, yesterday, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to begin immediate probe of his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, in his handling of the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P.

The red chamber said it was imperative that President Buhari ask his predecessor to account for every penny spent during the latter‘s administration on the SURE-P and other poverty alleviation programmes.

This came just as it ruled against the  implementation of the N5,000 monthly stipend to unemployed Nigerian youths as the President promised during his campaign.

The advice to probe Jonathan was sequel to an additional prayer moved by Senator Babajide Christopher Omoworare to Senator Bassey Albert Akpan-sponsored motion, entitled: “Urgent need to curb the soaring rate of unemployment in Nigeria,” which he presented for consideration during yesterday’s plenary.

After the initial recommendations of the motion, Senator Philip Aduda raised an additional prayer, urging the Federal Government to fulfill one of its numerous campaign promises.

“The Federal Government should immediately commence the payment of the N5,000 monthly stipend it promised during the pre-election campaign,” Aduda moved.

The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, rose and seconded the additional prayer. But Omoworare raised the Senate Standing Order 53(6) to oppose the additional prayer.

Buhari, Jonathan In ‘Secret’ Meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan met briefly at the new banquet hall of the presidential villa, Abuja, on Monday afternoon. The meeting lasted only 10 minutes, with no presidential aides in attendance. Jonathan, who arrived in a black Range Rover, was seen off by Buhari to the front of the venue after the meeting.

They shook hands, and Buhari waited until Jonathan’s car departed. They did not speak with reporters, while photojournalists were barred from taking pictures.

How Reuben Abati Sabotaged Jonathan- Edwin Clark

A former Federal Commissioner for Information, Edwin Clark, has alleged that Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, sabotaged the former president by failing to promote his image and achievements.

Against Mr. Abati’s claims that Mr. Clark no longer considered Mr. Jonathan his ‘son’, Mr. Clark said he still sees the former president as a political son despite gaining nothing from his presidency.

While expressing his resolve to quit partisan politics, Mr. Clark was recently reported as saying Mr. Jonathan “did not have the political will to fight corruption”.

In his response to Mr. Clark’s remark on the ex-president, the former president’s publicist wrote in an opinion article titled, “Clark the Father, Jonathan the Son” that the octogenarian was only making the disparaging remarks because Mr. Jonathan had lost the 2015 election.

“Who would ever think Chief E.K. Clark would publicly disown President Jonathan? He says Jonathan was a weak president. At what point did he come to that realization?

“Yet, throughout the five years, he spoke loudly against anyone who opposed the president,” Mr. Abati wrote.

Ijaw Group Counters Clark, Lists What He Benefited From Jonathan

A group, Ijaw Justice Forum, IJF, in Delta State, Wednesday, said it was malicious for former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark, to say that he did not get anything from the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.

In a statement jointly signed by the president and secretary, Karona Etonye and Ekenwan Akwagbe respectively, the group said it was surprised at media report quoting Clark to have said among other things to that he did not get any contract and never asked for job slots for either his children or relatives in Jonathan regime.

“This is the peak of ingratitude from a man, who called himself the ‘father’ of the former president.
He attracted patronage from the high and mighty from all parts of Nigeria and received gifts of cash and kind because of their perceived closeness of him to Dr. Jonathan.

“It is wicked and mischievous for Clark to say that he did not get anything from the Jonathan administration, including contracts. Perhaps, Clark made this statement to the Vanguard reporter in his dream, has he forgotten that his company was awarded a contract for the reclamation and shore protection of Amadi-ama community in Rivers State by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs during the Jonathan era? The group added.

They asserted, “It can be said and indeed correctly that Clark is the proverbial fowl that eats and cleans its beak or mouth on the ground so that there will be no trace of food particles on the sides of its mouth. This, he has done to several persons that occupied public offices in the past.

“Between 1999 and 2007, Chief Clark was one of the elders that benefitted most from the administration of Chief James Ibori in Delta State. As it is characteristic of him, he sponsored a so-called Delta Elders and Stakeholders’ Forum to petition the EFCC alleging that Ibori committed monumental corrupt practices while in office.

“It is quite unfortunate that Chief Clark at 90 can peddle lies and make them appear as if they were true. How would Clark say that he did not ask for jobs for his children or for his relatives? Has he forgotten the note he wrote to the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe asking him to use his good offices to make his younger brother, Mr. Isa Clark the Coordinator of the Sure- P programme in Delta South Senatorial District? The group further said.

It asserted, “Under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Chief Clark applied for and was granted licence to establish a private university, the E. K. Clark University in his hometown, Kiagbodo. The launching, which took place in the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja was attended by the who- is- who in Nigerian politics, including Dr. Jonathan himself.”

“To complement the federal government gesture, the NDDC awarded contract for the sinking of a bore hole in the university campus. It is incontrovertible that he had that huge patronage because of the former president. If he doubts it, we challenge him to come up with a new project and see how many Nigerians of substance will attend,” IJF said.

According to it, “There are many more gains that Clark made in the Jonathan era, never before in his political life has he gotten the kind of patronage he had under Jonathan.”

The group pointed out the Chief Clark contributed hugely to failure of the former president in the March presidential polls, saying, “The insults and abuses he rained on leading political figures across Nigeria attracted hatred to Jonathan and that affected negatively the outcome of the election results.”

Iyiade Raymond Dotun: An Open Letter To CAN President, Papa Ayo Oritsejafor

CALL UPON ME AND I WILL ANSWER YOU.

Sir, i am very delighted to write this letter to you and i am totally convinced that by the time you will be reading this, the spirit of the most high God will descend upon you and convey the originality and importance of the content of this letter to you. The major reason why i have chosen to write directly to you sir, is because i know you as a man that understands the principles and efficacy of spiritual violence and spiritual rage. You carry the characteristics of my heaven abode Apostle Peter. You can do almost anything for the sake of the gospel and i know without any iota of doubt that the spirit of the living God has filled every position in your life. My respect for your prophetic declarations is enveloped in the vault of my heart. There is nothing you can do either good or not good that can remove you from my list of highly respected men of God because i know you will not do what the spirit of God in you has not ordained or confirmed just like the Senate are in the position to confirm ministerial nominees.

The major reason why i write this letter directly to you would have been defeated if i had not appreciated God in your life in the first paragraph of this piece and now i can confidently proceed to the major part of this letter knowing fully well that the Lord has prepared a space in your heart to receive the words as they emerge.
Sir, a lot of people say that Nigeria will be great. I believe and agree with them but greatness cannot be easily achieved if there is a deficit of the needed force to drive greatness to position. Nigeria has a bright future but there are so many forces that stands on Her way to becoming very great. I must say that these forces do not care if Nigeria splits up like the red sea, these forces do not care if Nigeria slips off and scatter like a mirror. Sir, let me tell you a secret, in the face of God, Nigeria is a mirror of the world. Whenever God looks down to the earth and sees Nigeria, whatever condition or let me say whatever spiritual status he sees in Nigeria, that He’ll assume for the whole world. Sir, for greatness to be achieved, one needs to employ a greater force. Nigeria is becoming too cold spiritually, regardless of the number of churches that has evolved in the past few years. Excuse sir, the spiritual watchmen at the gates of this country are fast asleep and a lot of ungodly and unholy things have found their ways into this great city of God. There is a need for us to fortify ourselves and launch into the extravagance of that greater force.

I would like to restrict my reference to 1kings 18:1-46. So many years ago, in the days of Prophet Elijah;a great man of God, there was famine in the land of Samaria just as there is in Nigeria. The lord has promised to send rain but there are some forces militating against this promise and this is why we need to act fast. We need to challenge these forces with a greater force just like Elijah did. Elijah challenged four hundred and fifty men in the name of the Lord. Sir, the problems in this nation has challenged we the Elijah of this generation but we have always dodged it. This is the time for us to awake and utterly destroy the causative agents of these problems with a greater force;THE FORCE OF PRAYER. Elijah was just a man of God but in Nigeria here, we have many a man of God.

We are fit for this battle. In just one day, Elijah was able to defeat four hundred and fifty prophets and i know that in just one day, God can give us victory over the problems of this Nation if we lift our voices to him in prayer. Sir please let a day be set aside, a day that all the prophetic voices in Nigeria will come together under one roof and lift up their prophetic voices interceding on behalf of this country. I know that People are praying for this country but Lord i thank you, forgive my sins, protect me and my babe kind of prayer is not carrying enough fire to quash the problem we face in Nigeria. This is why we should all come together in one accord and cry to the Lord. We have you, Pastor Adeboye, Bishop Oyedepo, Pastor Iyiade and a host of other anointed men of God. Let us face the problems of this country in a spiritual battle. Let us pray together that the good Lord should send the rain of peace, blessing multiple ideas and other good things to this nation. God bless you sir. God bless Nigeria.

Reps To Probe Jonathan’s Airport Projects

The House of Representatives has decried the state and  status of the nation’s airports.

The lawmakers regretted that there was little to show for the huge investment made into the aviation sector by the Federal Government.

The House consequently directed its Committee on Aviation to investigate the N400 billion appropriated for the expansion, modernization and management of 17 domestic and five international airports by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The mandate of the committee is to ascertain the factors responsible for the “damning and embarrassing” status of Nigerian airports and report back in two weeks.

The decision of the lawmakers followed the adoption of a motion by Garba Datti  (APC, Kaduna), who noted that with the whopping sums injected into the aviation sector for the upgrade of airports, rather than turn out to be symbols of national pride, they have become objects of condemnation.

False Prophecy To Jonathan: Oritsejafor Replies Pastor Okotie

The statement by Pastor Chris Okotie that CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor deceived Goodluck Jonathan with false prophecy that made him contest and lost the 2015 election has been trashed.

Responding on behalf of Oritsejafor, the Director of National Issues in CAN, Sunny Oibe, in a chat with Punch, said people should ignore Okotie, that he is looking for popularity through Oritsejafor.

His words: “Well, it is laughable if Chris Okotie is making this spurious allegation…We will not like to take issues with Okotie…because doing that will amount to making him popular. He is looking for popularity which he doesn’t have through Pastor Ayo and he is not going to get it.

“Okotie knows exactly that what he is saying is not true. Nigerians should know that Pastor Oritsejafor is not among those pastors that make prophecies. He does not make prophecy and never said anything during the campaigns.

Why would he bring politics into the pulpit?

“This is where we Christians are getting it wrong. They are the ones misleading Nigerians. Oritsejafor never made any prophecy concerning Jonathan and the 2015 presidential election. I challenged any Nigerian with evidence to come forward.”

Oritsejafor Deceived Jonathan With False Election Prophecy- Okotie

The General Overseer of Household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie, on Sunday said that were it not Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor’s “false” prophecy to former President Goodluck Jonathan, the latter (Jonathan) would not have contested the 2015 presidential election.

He said that the former President had initially made up his mind not to vie for the election, but stated that Oritsejafor “deceived” him with tales of victory as prophesied unto him by God.

Oritsejafor is the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria.

Okotie, who said this while delivering a sermon in his church on Sunday in Lagos, said, “Pastor Oritsejafor deceived Jonathan with a false prophecy from God that he (Jonathan) would win the election convincingly.”

He said, “The man (Jonathan) became convinced to contest after Oritsejafor had told him, using CAN’s name, that God had ordained him the winner of the 2015 presidential election.”

Tony Ademiluyi: Amaechi; At Last

Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has always been rugged and dogged and seems to always come out of his political fights unscathed with his adversaries being made to continually lick their wounds. His ability to always bounce back after all seems to have been lost confounds even the most optimistic of his die-hard supporters.

In 1999, his position as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly was shaky as his opponent, Uchenna Okwukwu took him to court. Amaechi lost the case and it seemed the nunc dimitis had set in for the then 34 year old politician who had earlier been personal assistant to Peter Odili while the latter was the Rivers State Deputy Governor and special assistant on student matters to Rufus Ada George. Hope came for the Ikwerre born former student leader when the appeal was upturned in his favour and he went on to become a two time chairman of the Speakers forum at a time when his then colleagues were being yanked off like flies.

In 2006, he was clearly the favourite to succeed Dr. Peter Odili. He had been loyal to him for close to two decades and had paid his dues in the game laden with high wire intrigues. Like the pundits predicted, he won the party primaries with an extremely wide margin and then the unexpected happened. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on a visit to the state said his victory had a ‘k-leg’ and an overnight substitution of his name was done with his cousin’s Celestine Omehia replacing his. Odili was forced to turn his back on his loyal godson as an open or tacit support for him would spell doom for his much vaunted presidential or vice-presidential campaign which was gaining momentum at the time. Amaechi was now clearly on his own as many of his friends and allies jumped ship hearkening to the age long maxim that in the game of politics, there are only permanent interests and not friends or foes. He and his family were forced to seek refuge in Ghana when his usurper cousin held sway in Brick House, Port Harcourt. Ironically, the present Governor Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike who is now his arch enemy stood by him and was his Man Friday in his bid to get justice done. October 25 was a water shed day in the history of both the judiciary and politics as he was declared Governor even though he didn’t physically contest the elections.

His eight year was marred with controversies as he battled Jonathan till he did the unthinkable by not only defecting to the then opposition APC but led the onslaught against the agenda to kick out Jonathan by being Buhari’s campaign director.  Getting him to stand before the Senate to be screened as a minister obviously in compensation for his role was akin to getting an elephant to pass through the eye of a needle. There was a damning petition against him by the Integrity Group bordering on financial impropriety and gross misconduct while he was the state’s helmsman. His name was passed over thrice with different theories being bandied around. Some opined his grouse with Wike was what was responsible, others held that public opinion will swing against him and would make Buhari who had sold himself as an anti-corruption crusader to withdraw his name like he did to Alhaji Musa Ibeto, former Deputy Governor of Niger State.

In the end he was the first to get screened on October 22, 2015. His dressing was different from his usual attire with his making reference to it as he said he was dressed for peace. The minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio fired the first salvo when he said the PDP Senators would refrain from asking him questions as they had not had the time to study the report brought against him. After all this weeks? What were they possibly doing? Was it all planned as Amaechi was once part of them? The Senate Leader, Ali Ndume wanted him to take a bow and go since he was a former legislator albeit on the state level. His opinion was greeted with many cheers from some of his colleagues but Saraki insisted on his answering some questions.

He cleared the air on the panel report and said he was never indicted by it and got the chamber roaring when he said he had never taken a bribe in his life as he defined the hydra-headed monster of corruption. He harped on the need for a diversified economy with great attention being paid to agriculture and solid minerals. He expressed his grief at the high cost of doing business in the country and reiterated the need for more stable power supply. If made the Minister for the Niger Delta, his first task would be to complete the long abandoned east-west road as it was an economic gateway for the country as a whole. He made a surreptitious support for a state police as he never saw the Rivers State Commissioner of Police for three years while he was Governor which makes a mockery of the constitutional provision that designates the Governor as the chief security officer of the state. I expected one of the senators to ask him why he shut down the law courts for well over a year as that action casts doubts as to whether he truly believes in the rule of law. It shows his lack of conflict management skills and how would he possibly manage the corruption and crisis ridden bureaucracy which he is being touted to head?

His grilling which lasted for about fifty minutes was more of a soft landing for him as the questions were not as power packed as one would have expected since his nomination generated so much dust and controversy. Its sure that his confirmation is a done deal if his antecedents are anything to go by. He has crossed the Rubicon. We just hope he concentrates on his job and doesn’t get distracted in another needless battle with Wike as he sometimes allows his emotions get the better of him.

Good luck!

Reuben Abati: Clark, The Father, Jonathan, The son

I have tried delaying the writing of this piece in the honest expectation that someone probably misquoted Chief E.K. Clark, when he reportedly publicly disowned former President Goodluck Jonathan. I had hoped that our dear father, E.K. Clark, would issue a counter statement and say the usual things politicians say: “they quoted me out of context!”  “Jonathan is my son”. That has not happened; rather, some other Ijaw voices, including one Joseph Evah, have come to the defence of the old man, to join hands in rubbishing a man they once defended to the hilt and used as a bargaining chip for the Ijaw interest in the larger Nigerian geo-politics.

If President Jonathan had returned to power on May 29, 2015, these same persons would have remained in the corridors of power, displaying all forms of ethnic triumphalism. It is the reason in case they do not realize it, why the existent power blocs that consider themselves most fit to rule, continue to believe that those whose ancestors never ran empires can never be trusted with power, hence they can only be admitted as other people’s agents or as merchants of their own interests which may even be defined for them as is deemed convenient. Mercantilism may bring profit, but in power politics, it destroys integrity and compromises otherwise sacred values.

President Jonathan being publicly condemned by his own Ijaw brothers, particularly those who were once staunch supporters of his government further serves the purpose of exposing the limits of the politics of proximity. Politics in Africa is driven by this particular factor; it is at the root of all the other evils: prebendalism, clientelism and what Matthew Kukah has famously described as the “myownisation of power”.  It is both positive and negative, but obviously, more of the latter than the former. It is considered positive only when it is beneficial to all parties concerned, and when the template changes, the ground also shifts. As in that song, the solid rock of proximity is soon replaced by shifting sands. Old worship becomes new opportunism. And the observant public is left confounded.

Chief E.K. Clark? Who would ever think, Chief E.K. Clark would publicly disown President Jonathan?  He says Jonathan was a weak President. At what point did he come to that realization? Yet, throughout the five years (not six, please) of the Jonathan Presidency, he spoke loudly against anyone who opposed the President. He was so combative he was once quoted as suggesting that Nigeria could have problems if Jonathan was not allowed to return to office. Today, he is the one helping President Jonathan’s successor to quench the fires. He always openly said President Jonathan is “his son”. Today, he is not just turning against his own son, he is telling the world his son as President lacked the political will to fight corruption. He has also accused his son of being too much of a gentleman. Really? Gentlemanliness would be considered honourable in refined circles.  Is Pa E.K. Clark recommending something else in order to prove that he is no longer a politician but a statesman as he says?

As someone who was a member of the Jonathan administration, and who interacted often with the old man, I can only say that I am shocked.  This is the equivalent of the old man deleting President Jonathan’s phone number and ensuring that calls from his phone no longer ring at the Jonathan end. During the Jonathan years, Chief E. K. Clark was arguably the most vocal Ijaw leader defending the government. He called the President “my son”, and both father and son remained in constant touch.

There is something about having the President’s ears in a Presidential system, elevated to the level of a fetish in the clientilist Nigerian political system. Persons in the corridors of power who have the President’s ear- be they cook, valet, inlaws, wife, cousin, former school mates, priests, or whatever, enjoy special privileges. They have access to the President and they can whisper into his ears. That’s all they have as power: the power to whisper and run a whispering campaign that can translate into opportunities or losses for those outside that informal power loop around every Presidency, that tends to be really influential.

Every President must beware of those persons who come around calling them “Daddy”, “Uncle”, na my brother dey there”, “my son”, “our in-law”: emotional blackmailers relying on old connections. They are courted, patronized and given more attention and honour than they deserve by those looking for access to the President or government. Even when the power and authority of the whispering exploiters of the politics of proximity is contrived, they go out of their way to exaggerate it. They acquire so much from being seen to be in a position to make things happen.

Chief E. K. Clark had the President’s ears. He had unfettered access to his son. He was invited to most state events.  And he looked out for the man he called “my son”, in whom he was well pleased. Chief Clark’s energy level in the service of the Jonathan administration was impressive. Fearless and outspoken, he deployed his enormous talents in the service of the Jonathan government.  If a press statement was tame, he drew attention to it and urged a more robust defence of “your boss”. If any invective from the APC was overlooked, he urged prompt rebuttal. If the party was tardy in defending “his son”, he weighed in.

If anyone had accused the President of lacking “the political will to fight corruption” at that time, he, E.K. Clark, would have called a press conference to draw attention to the Jonathan administration’s institutional reforms and preventive measures, his commitment to electoral integrity to check political corruption, and the hundreds of convictions secured by both the ICPC and EFCC under his son’s watch. So prominent and influential was he, that ministers, political jobbers etc etc trooped to his house to pay homage.

In due course, those who opposed President Jonathan did not spare Chief E. K. Clark either. He was accused of making inflammatory and unstatesman-like statements. An old war-horse, nobody could intimidate him. He was not President Olusegun Obasanjo’s fan in particular. He believed Obasanjo wanted to sabotage his son, and he wanted Obasanjo put in his place. Beneath all of that, was an unmistaken rivalry between the two old men, seeking to control the levers of Nigerian politics.

Every President probably needs a strong, passionate ally like Chief E. K. Clark. But what happened? What went wrong? Don’t get me wrong. I am not necessarily saying that the Ijaw leader should have remained loyal to and defend Goodluck Jonathan because they are both Ijaws, patriotism definitely could be stronger than ethnic affinities, nonetheless that E. K. Clark tale about leaving politics and becoming a statesman is nothing but sheer crap.  If Jonathan had returned to office, he would still be a card-carrying member of the PDP and the “father of the President” and we would still have been hearing that famous phrase, “my son”. Chief E. K. Clark, five months after, has practically told the world that President Buhari is better than “his own son”.

It is the worst form of humiliation that President Jonathan has received since he left office.  It is also the finest compliment that President Buhari has received since he assumed office. The timing is also auspicious: just when the public is beginning to worry about the direction of the Buhari government, E. K. Clark shows up to lend a hand of support and endorsement. Only one phrase was missing in his statement, and it should have been added: “my son, Buhari.” It probably won’t be too long before we hear the old man saying “I am a statesman, Buhari is my son.”  I can imagine President Obasanjo grinning with delight. If he really wants to be kind, he could invite E.K. Clark to his home in Ota or Abeokuta to come and do the needful by publicly tearing his PDP membership card and join him in that exclusive club of Nigerian statesmen! The only problem with that club these days is that you can become a member by just saying so or by retiring from partisan politics. We are more or less being told that there are no statesmen in any of the political parties.

It is not funny. Julius Ceasar asked Brutus in one of the famous lines in written literature: “Et tu Brutus?” President Jonathan should ask Chief E. K. Clark: “Et tu Papa?” To which the father will probably tell the son: “Ces’t la vie, mon cher garcon.”  And really, that is life. In the face of other considerations, loyalties vanish; synergies collapse. The wisdom of the tribe is overturned; the politics of proximity dissolves; loyalties remain in a perpetual process of construction.  Thus, individual interests and transactions drive the political game in Nigeria, with time and context as key determinants.

These are teachable moments for President Jonathan. Power attracts men and women like bees to nectar, the state of powerlessness ends as a journey to the island of loneliness. However, the greatest defender of our work in office is not our ethnic “fathers and “brothers” but rather our legacy. The real loss is that President Jonathan’s heroism, his messianic sacrifice in the face of defeat, is being swept under the carpet and his own brothers who used to say that the Ijaws are driven by a principle of “one for all and all for another”, have become agent-architects of his pain. The Ijaw platform having seemingly been de-centered, Chief E.K. Clark and others are seeking assimilation in the new power structure. It is a telling reconstruction of the politics of proximity and mimicry.

Chief E.K. Clark once defended the rights of ethnic minorities to aspire to the highest offices in the land, his latest declaration about his son reaffirms the existing stereotype at the heart of Nigeria’s hegemonic politics. The same hegemons and their agents whom Clark used to fight furiously will no doubt find him eminently quotable now that he has proclaimed that it is wrong to be a “gentleman”, and that his son lacks “the political will to fight corruption”. There is more to this than we may ever know. Chief Clark can insist from now till 2019,  that he has spoken as a statesman and as a matter of principle. His re-alignment,  is curious nonetheless.

Jonathan’s Loyalists Write Buhari Over Lopsided Anti-graft Crusade

Political aides of former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday sent a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged disparity in the on-going investigation into cases of corrupt practices against some political appointees under the last administration.

The former political aides of the former President, under the aegis of the Voice of the South-South, declared that though they supported the anti-corruption crusade of President Buhari with the belief that it would be done with justice and equity, adding that the exclusion of the former presidents who are northerners and other APC stalwarts showed lopsidedness, selective justice and bias.

A statement issued yesterday at the end of an emergency meeting presided over by the state Chairman, Alex Dumbo and Chairman of the group’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Mr. Mike Ogiasa, stated that the cases of former Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke and the late D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha have shown the bias of President Muhammadu Buhari in handling anti-corruption matters.

According to the group: ”First, we observed that immediately the past Minister of Petroleum Resources was purportedly arrested in London, the Department for Security Service (DSS) promptly invaded her home in Nigeria. Apart from Mrs. Alison-Madueke, we are yet to see or hear the arrest of any of the rest 42 ministers who served in the immediate past administration…”

Jonathan Discovered Kachikwu To Replace Diezani– PDP

National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, said on Monday that it was immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, and not President Muhammadu Buhari, who discovered the current Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu.

Metuh said Jonathan was preparing Kachikwu as a replacement for ex-petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who headed the ministry till last May.

Metuh made the claims in a Channels Television discussion programme, SunriseDaily, monitored in Abuja.

The PDP spokesman, who was reacting to the decision of Buhari to supervise the Petroleum Ministsery, said that the NNPC helmsman was not a new discovery by the president.

Metuh said that the party would closely monitor Buhari as the minister of petroleum and would not hesitate to expose any wrongdoing in the oil industry under the president.

Metuh said: The PDP under Jonathan discovered the incumbent group managing director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), over two years ago.

“Ibe Kachikwu was supposed to be Minister of Petroleum under PDP two years ago; he is not a new discovery.

“If the President handles the petroleum industry and does anything dishonest, we will expose him and tell Nigerians,” Metuh said.”

Zayyad I. Muhammad: Boko Haram War; Between Buhari, Goodluck And The North East

Northeast Nigeria – the epicenter of most of Boko Haram’s frightening atrocities, has stories to tell, now and in the future. The stories will be punctuated by the names Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, Boko Haram and toxic leadership.
The Goodluck Jonathan chapter will be inundated with the sloppy handling of the Boko Haram war by the government at the centre, which led to the painful displacement of   a large number of people from their homes, incessant bombing of targets at will by Boko Haram, destruction of schools & worship centers. In addition, most land for subsistent agriculture became inaccessible; fear to send wards to schools was constantly instilled in parents. The Goodluck Jonathan regime did not wake up to its responsibilities until at the eleventh hour- when they wanted to win the 2015 presidential elections. Fortunately for Nigeria, the people of the northeastern states torn by Boko Haram senseless war- Borno, Yobe, Adamawa Gombe and Bauchi rejected Goodluck Jonathan.
The majority of the people in the northeast have confidence in President Buhari’s political will to win the war against Boko Haram, and they are very happy with the level of successes recorded by the military so far. The people of the northeast are experiencing the difference between the sloppy handling of the war by Goodluck’s regime and the doggedness and commitment being shown by the Buhari government.
Anyone who comes to the northeast now will see the obvious resolve of the present government to win the war- real-time pictures of success by the military; confidence on the faces of the soldiers on ground; the number of war planes and their activities in skies especially from Yola airport will certainly tell any doubting Thomases that Buhari is matching his words with action. When the 2015 presidential election was postponed, a foreign journalist told Buhari that the election was postponed because of Boko Haram. Buhari answered, “What is Boko Haram?” A commonsense definition of that statement by Buhari is that Boko Haram does not have the capacity to dictate to Nigeria.
Buhari is getting a massive approval from the northeast, because people can now see that the military is in the offensive mode- taking the war to Boko Haram not waiting for Haram to come. Now Boko Haram are being chased out of villages and their camps in bushes, unlike before when they were capturing big towns and annexing local government areas and renaming them.
The people of the northeast are with Buhari, because they now see the Nigerian soldiers are very confident; fully kitted; well-armed and tackling Boko Haram head on. The people of the Northeast are appreciative of Buhari’s approach to the war- because now, the rights of people and their humanity are always protected by the soldiers while the war rages. People now see the military as their shield and protectors unlike before when they feared both Boko Haram and the military.
With Buhari at the helms of affairs, most people in the northeast believe the war will soon be won and most common people now have confidence to give vital information to constituted authorities that will help the government in winning   the war.
Buhari is winning the Boko Haram war, the people of the northeast are happy and have strong confidence in the commander-in-chief and the feet on the ground.

I Spent N333m, Not N64bn, Jonathan Replies El-Rufai

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has denied claims by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State that his administration spent N64 billion to organize Nigeria’s independence celebrations for three years.

According to the governor, Jonathan spent N13 billion in 2011, N15 billion in 2012 and N14 billion in 2013 and N22 billion in 2011, bringing the total to N64 billion.

However, Jonathan denied the claim, saying only N332.6 million was spent during the three-year period and chided el-Rufai for deliberately lying to confuse the public and give his administration a bad name.

Jonathan, who responded to the allegation yesterday, described the huge figure as figment of el-Rufai’s imagination and a fabricated lie by a favour-seeker.

In a statement in Abuja, through his former Minister of National Planning, Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, Jonathan said: “For the record, a breakdown of our anniversary spending between 2012 to 2014 amounted to N332.6 million.

“We challenge the Office of the Government of the Federation to publish these details for the consumption of the public.

“A breakdown of our spending for this event between 2012 and 2104 goes thus: 2012, N107.6 million; 2013, N45 million and 2014, 180 million. So, the question here is where did the billions, as claimed by el-Rufai, emanate from?”

Corruption Must Be Kicked Out Of Nigeria – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on all Nigerians to work towards kicking out corruption in the country. He made the call while speaking with journalist at his home in Abeokuta, Ogun state to mark Nigeria’s 55th independence celebration yesterday October1st. According to him;

“Corruption must not have resting place within our society. We must kick corruption out because it destroys almost everything and I am not talking about corruption of money.
Corruption of attitude, nepotism, favouritism, they are corruption in different forms and all aspects of corruption must be kicked out of our society”he said He said at 55, Nigeria had not done badly as a country “.Fifty-five years in the life of a nation is comparatively young, growing and when you look at the life and history of those that you may call settled societies or reasonably mature countries, we are not doing too badly. They have had missteps just like we are having missteps; they have made mistakes and most of them have learnt from their mistakes” he said.

Happy Independence Anniversary ??NIGERIA??

Maxwell Adeyemi Adeleye?: Revisiting Governance By Propaganda In Nigeria

Nigeria is a geographical entity blessed with abundance of human and natural resources. However, despite the enormous resources at the disposal of the people saddled with the insignia of power in Nigeria, her life expectancy has drastically reduced from 52 to 41. The economy is crumbling. The banking industry is wailing. Vision 2020 is now a mirage. Unemployment is alarmingly increasing. Maternal child birth death is jumping up. Despite the current campaign against Corruption, the menace is still booming like the wave of ocean while the judiciary and legislatures, the presumed hope of the common man, have turned against the common people.
Despite the abundance of crude oil, countless-fertile hectares of land and rational and critical thinkers which liters the nooks and crannies of Nigeria, over 80million Nigerian people are still wallowing in abject squalor and filth, largely occasioned by the tactlessness and thoughtlessness of those saddled with the responsibility of managing the nation’s financial and economic lacunas (Omoruyi 2012).
My stance is that the nation of Nigeria is currently in awry because she has been under the siege of propagandists since independent. Liars, deceivers, hypocrites, rogues, pen robbers and pseudo-democrats have governed Nigeria more than those with genuine intentions.
The flood gate of mumbo-limbo was formally commissioned in Nigeria during the Murtala/Obasanjo Military administration and second republic and the trend has not ended. Nigerians were deceived with many degrees of projects that have ended in shamble.
The Ajaokuta Steel Company conceived during the Third National Plan from 1975 to 1980, to me, marks the beginning of propaganda in Nigeria. According to a Nigerian former Finance Minister, Okonjo Iweala’s Finance book titled- REFORMING THE UNREFORMABLE, The Ajaokuta Steel Company has gulped five billion US dollars (One trillion naira) from the nation’s purse with no useful steel produced from the company in the last 25 years.
The Obasanjo/Muritala’s OPERATION FEED THE NATION and GREEN REVOLUTION programmes designed with the aim of bringing relieve to the poor, eradicate poverty, hunger and abrogation of emptiness in the Nation of Nigeria was another propaganda that swelled the nation dry. The policy ended up putting Nigeria more in poverty and starvation. It was a ruse, a perpetual disaster.
The Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) invented by the Babangida Military Administration was another propaganda that still rings bell in the memory of Nigerians. The Policy designed to redesign, reshape and reform Nigerian economy ended up ruining the economy. SAP led to more inflation and devaluation of naira and embarrassing fall in price of Premium Medium Spirit (PMS). SAP was a hoax propagated by the Ibrahim Babangida (IBB)’s administration to enslave Nigerians to the western powers.
The much publicized National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS) initiated by the Obasanjo’s administration was another humbug that rocked the pages of Nigeria’s dailies with an amazing ease. NEEDs, according to Obasanjo was derived from the urgent requirement for value orientation, the objective of which is to sound the message clearly, that it is not business as usual. Therefore, the bedrock of NEEDS is its vision of a Nigeria with a new set of values and principles, which will facilitate the achievements of national goals of wealth creation, employment generation and poverty reduction. NEEDs was basically planned to work in the following areas of the economy -Public sector reforms, Privatization and Liberalization, Governance, Transparency and anti-corruption, as well as service delivery by government agencies.
However, Obasanjo left Nigeria more impoverished than he met it. The administration spent $16billion on power supply without giving Nigerians electricity to enjoy. Massive funds were invested on Ajaokuta Steel Company with no significant achievement recorded. All public landed properties were sold by the administration under the guise of privatization. The properties sold then were allegedly bought by those who are currently echoing CHANGE.
Nigeria under Obasanjo was rated by the Transparency International as the second most corrupt country in the world. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) set up to wage war against corruption ended up becoming a tool in the hand of Obasanjo to punish perceived political enemies.
Also, the Obasanjo led administration is reputed for conducting the worst general elections ever witnessed in the history of Nigeria’s democracy. The pump price of PMS witnessed 600% increment during Obasanjo’s reign. Many high profile politicians were gruesomely assassinated under the watchful eyes of Obasanjo. Inflation increased while the integrity of naira declined. As the Niger/Delta region was boiling due to insecurity caused by militants’ unrest, so also unemployment was increasing with a wide margin. Sachet water replaced pipe-borne water. Illiteracy increased from 45% to 61%. Agriculture was jettisoned for crude oil which could now be regarded as a curse rather than a blessing to the Nigerian people. Obasanjo killed the Nigerian telecommunication (NITEL), selling the nation to a South Africa owned firm-The MTN
Furthermore, the vision 2020 invented by the Yar’adua’s administration is another propaganda which the Nigerian bourgeoisies have been using to wheedle Nigerians. Vision 2020 was a policy designed, aiming that by 2020, Nigeria would be one of the 10 largest economies in the world, able to consolidate its leadership role in Africa and establish itself as a significant player in the global economic and political arena. Today, the story of vision 2020 is a confirmed delusion, and an illusion commissioned to swindle Nigerians.
The late Professor Dora Akunyili’s rebranding project has not been forgotten by Nigerians. Akunyili, the main propagandist of the Yar’adua’s administration, toured all the states of the federation to publicize and make known the phony achievements of her boss to credulous Nigerians. Billions of tax payers’ money was wasted on the project with nothing achieved.
The YouWin programme designed by the Jonathan’s government was a lingo. YouWin, according to its initiator, stands for Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria. It is an innovative business plan competition aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurial youths in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas. YouWin was designed to produce at least 1,200 millionaires monthly. However, the Jonathan admisntration ended with YouWin not producing 100 known millionaires.
The Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) was another propaganda which those at the corridor of power under Jonathan used to loot the common patrimony of Nigeria. SURE-P is a policy designed by theJonathan’s administration to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians following the partial removal of fuel subsidy on January 2012. About three hundred billion naira (N300billion) has gone to SURE-P with no significant achievement recorded till date. Most of the 1,600 buses said to have been purchased to ease the problem of transportation across the nation have not arrived the country four years after the programme was inaugurated. The then Christopher Kolade led SURE-P committee expended two billion naira (N2billion) on renting and furnishing of office accommodation for SURE-P across the nation.
In reality, what did the immediate past government of Jonathan successfully  transformed in Nigeria? He reformed the power sector yet, Nigerians did not enjoy constant power supply. Jonathan invested heavily on the education sector, yet, no Nigerian university was ranked among the best 1000 in the world. The then Information Minister, Labaran Maku led a good governance tour bankrolled by the Jonathan’s administration to over 20 states. Media reports have it that about two hundred million was expended daily by the Maku’s group. The tour ended in shamble!
The newly invented propaganda in Nigeria is CHANGE and FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION. Some politicians preached change to Nigerians prior to the last general elections and they (Nigerians) bought to their preaching. Same politicians who sold the nation’s properties to their cronies; who spent $16billions on power supply without giving Nigerians light to enjoy; who were indicted in Halliburton and Seimen scandals; who ran their states aground; who were indicted for pension fraud; who spent N138m to sink two boreholes; who allegedly spent N98bn on his party’s presidential campaigns; who liquidated Society Generale Bank; who have bought 40% of what is good and glitters in their state, who plunged their states into generational debts etc are presently entertaining Nigerians with fight against corruption and the word “Change”.
Today, we have a regime who claimed to be fighting corruption, yet, no looter has been convicted till date. Those who allegedly looted their states and the nation dry are now being granted bail on self-recognition. A former governor who was accused of stealing N280m was recently granted bail for N280m. A former National Security Adviser whom the Change Agents accused of treason and felony against Nigerian state was recently  granted bail on self recognition. The change agents claimed to be fighting terrorism, yet, over 1000 Nigerians were murdered within their 100 days on the corridor of power.
Today, the members of the most corrupt youth organization in Nigeria-the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are now being paid by our Change Agents to stage anti-corruption rally. The members of the most corrupt interest group in Nigeria-the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are now being engaged by our Change Agents to shout no to corruption.
Today, only the thieves who stole YAM under the Jonathan’s administration but refused to support the campaign for change prior to 2015 general elections are being accused of stealing. Those who wrecked their states and the nation but supported the change crusade with their ill-gotten wealth have been pardoned. Only those against the interest of Abuja are being persecuted.
Today, the leader of the change movement whom we were told was poor prior to his electoral victory on March 28 presidential election has just declared assets worth N3bn. Today, nothing has been added to the nation’s megawatts. The economy is crumbling under the change agents. The stock market is dying. The banking industry is now on RED ALERT. The organized private sectors are sacking and retrenching yet, the media is a-wash with noise of Change and fight against corruption. Which way Nigeria?

My Wife & I Have Been Hiding- Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that the death of Mrs. Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo forced him out of seclusion.

He said he elected to remain out of public glare since leaving office on May 29 and had wanted the seclusion to continue.

The former President spoke at the Ikenne home of the Awolowos after he led a delegation to visit the family.

He said: “Within this period, my wife and I have been hiding; we don’t even go out. We thought we’ll be hiding for at least 12 months.

“But in this particular case, we could not hide. So, we’ve come here to console and encourage our brothers and sisters that we are together.”

Ex President Jonathan Mourns HID Awolowo

Former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday mourned Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu  (HID) Awolowo, who passed on on Saturday at the age of 99 years, just two months away from her 100 birthday.

Jonathan said the present and future generations of Nigerian women and youths would miss Mrs.  Awolowo, who reportedly died in the company of her children after fervently praying for them and singing praises to God.

In a statement he signed, the former president expressed dismay at the news of the demise of Hannah, noting that she would eternally be remembered as the pillar and backbone of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, foremost nationalist and former Premier of the Western Region.

Jonathan urged all Nigerian women to emulate the virtues of Mrs. Awolowo, citing how she stood by her husband during his active days in politics; at the time of adversity and even after he passed away about 30 years.

Why OBJ Picked Jonathan As VP In 2007, Alamieyeseigha Opens Up

Revealing the intrigues that led to the choice of Jonathan as vice president in his country home in Yenagoa, former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, said it was part of Obasanjo’s grand plan to stop Alhaji Atiku Abubakar from succeeding him in 2007.

The former governor said from the discussions he had with Obasanjo, he knew that Jonathan was going to be the vice president of Nigeria as far back as August 25, 2005.

He said Obasanjo’s fear then, was that Atiku had secretly endorsed Alamieyeseigha as his running mate and had perfected plans to succeed him (OBJ) at the expiration of his second tenure.

Alamieyeseigha said the choice of Jonathan as vice president was to frustrate the emergence of Atiku and himself as  PDP flag bearers in 2007.

He expressed regrets that his impeachment, imprisonment and travails in office were part of the plot by Obasanjo, who he described as “devil incarnate” to stop him from becoming Atiku’s deputy.

His words: “For Goodluck, I knew that Jonathan was going to be vice president of Nigeria as far back as August 25, 2005.  Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, told me that since  Atiku and I wanted to take his job, that it would be over his dead body; and that unless he died, Atiku cannot be president of Nigeria.

“Obasanjo said since Atiku had picked me as his running mate, he would make sure that he dealt with and disgraced us. He said  he was going to use my deputy to rubbish me before everybody. So, I knew.”

On why he picked Jonathan as his deputy, Alamieyeseigha said he needed an establishment person and somebody who was not too ambitious.

He described Jonathan as humble and a man with strong character, who could be relied upon to handle a position of responsibility.”

Abdull-Azeez Ahmed Kadir: Anti-Corruption War; As Bishop Kukah Goes To The Confessional

Like President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, we are all Nigerians who have no any other country but Nigeria. And we need to stay here and salvage her. Especially after what she has gone through in the last six years in the hands of those entrusted with her care.

Nigeria was not only gang raped, but repeatedly stabbed, bleeding profusely and left to die. While she lay almost in coma, gasping for air, those entrusted with her well being were busy scheming for how to retain her in their possession, then sustain her abuse. But the Lord delivered us and we are on the path of salvation.

Talking salvation, what differentiate Bishop Kukah and President Jonathan from majority of Nigerians is that the two men are Christians. In fact, even at that, Kukah is a Catholic while Jonathan is Anglican. Nothing more. If they have more similarities, it is that they are both PhD holders. Even at that, their doctorates are in two varied fields. In fact, I cannot, will not and doubt not Kukah’s doctorate. His dissertation is a public knowledge.

So much has being written and said about the General Abdulsalami Abubakar led committee to the Villa and the subsequent media interview granted by Kukah purportedly speaking on behalf of the members. But no, Kukah spoke of, for, and by himself. May be a little opinion of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor; the gadfly of ex President Jonathan. But definitely not all the committee members.

If you know Cardinal Onaiyekan very well. If you know the Sultan; Abubakar Sa’ad III well, you will know that “probing corruption is not governance” as postulated by Kukah is not and will never be associated with these two eminent Nigerians. Check Sultan’s speech at the National Security Summit and see the contradiction. Kukah was on a solo flight to help fight for a friend; Jonathan. But he forgot the compass as well as forgot that the weather has changed so much since May 29, 2015. So he nose-dived and he crash landed. All Kukah tried doing was a class solidarity. Nothing more.

But the times have changed. This Kukah did not know or deliberately refused to acknowledge. In the process, his kite was not only shut down, his hard earned reputation took a nose dive too for the worst.

Kukah must have received ex President Goodluck Jonathan on a confessional where Jonathan must have confessed all his past sins. To which Kukah; a Bishop of the whole Sultanate Diocese must have solicited the Good Lord on behalf of the former President believing that God Almighty is ever forgiven as long as His servants confess their sins and atone for it.

Bishop Kukah have “boys” within the media cycle who always often help him gauge public opinion in the media, trouble shoot as well give him feedback on his utterances and actions. This time, the feedback must have been “Father, this one is bad. Make amends quickly”.

Kukah more than most Nigerians know that Buhari promised, during his political campaign to make anti-corruption a cardinal issue of his administration. Kukah know that curbing corruption, bringing criminals to justice is a great weapons of governance; a mean to an end and not the end. Kukah only tried short circuting the system and it blew in his face.

And as a good Catholics, Kukah thought of penitence, made a U-turn and went for confessional. But instead of walking down the short, humble, quiet and religiously revered aisle of the Church and before a fellow clergy, Kukah walked up the long, rich, noisy, politically charged corridors of the Villa and before President Buhari without an interface between them for his confessional.

That is after examining his conscience and decided to tell Buhari of the sorrow his statement has caused him and to what extent the media and most Nigerians were ready to gore him, Kukah went into the confessional. But instead of kneeling at the screen or sit with a barrier to confess his sin and sorrow, he sat on a round table to talk, face-to-face with the President instead of a Priest.

Though the doors of Buhari’s office were shut after his photo-ops with Kukah, and we cannot say what transpired between the two, one expected that Kukah might have began his confession with the sign of the cross, “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. My last confession was weeks, months, years ago”. But remember, Buhari is not a Priest but a President. Never mind both begin with “P”.

So, Kukah might have began instead with “Your Excellency. My last embarrassment and mis-quotation before this by the media was weeks, months, years ago”.

Buhari being a voracious reader like the Priest explores the Bible, might have read a quotation from what Kukah allegedly said on his anti-corruption and governance just like a Priest may read a passage from the Holy Scripture.

Kukah must have then gone ahead to state the sins, sorry, I mean the media mis-quotations that he could remember. Starting with the one(s) that was most difficult to say. ( I learn in the Catholic, in order to make a good confession the faithful must confess all mortal sins, according to kind and number.)

After confessing all the sins, I mean media mis-quotations that he remembered since his last good confession, the Bishop might have concluded by saying, “I am sorry for these and all the sins of my past life.” Or “I am sorry for the embarrassment my misunderstood explanations must have caused you, your government and the country at large” since he is before the President and not the Priest.

He then must have listened to the words of the President instead of the Priest who must have assigned him some penance. I also learn in the Catholic, doing the penance diminishes the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven.

After Buhari was done, for he is a man of few words, Kukah must have expressed some words of contrivance such as “Your Excellency, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my reported utterances which were misunderstood, because I dread the loss of your confidence and the pains of Nigerian’s anger. But most of all because I have offended you, my President, who is good and deserving of all my support. I firmly resolve with the help of your office, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my utterances. Amen”. The “amen” would have been said quietly without the President hearing because he is not a Priest.

Then he would have listened to the words of absolution, the sacramental forgiveness of the Aso Villa through the elected President. As he listen to the words of forgiveness, he might make the sign of the broom (symbol of the President’s party) with the President. Then President might have closed the visit by saying, “give thanks to the APC for the party is good,” to which Bishop must have answered, “for the party will surely endure in the Villa for four years fighting corruption.”

After this, Bishop must have thanked the President for forgiving him and resolved to do his penance. His penance must have been the resolve to return to the sacrament of reconciliation often, of talking less especially to the media, of supporting the government’s anti corruption drive and above all, atoning for past sins by telling truth to the guilty even if the guilty one succeeded for a decade and half plus a year with many sins to confess and ask for forgiveness.

As for Father Kukah and President Buhari’s anti-corruption fight, the Bishop has gone to confessional, so let others bear their cross before the lord of the manor. After all, a new Sherif is in town. The reason the Bishop kept a straight face, a sealed lips after walking out of his confessional with President Buhari in the Aso Villa. The Priest also confesses because he sins too.

Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan Spent N2.74 Trillion On Power Sector Since 1999

The successive regimes of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan committed N2.74 trillion to the troubled power sector in Nigeria.

The huge expenditure was disclosed by the Ministry of Power and the Niger Delta Independent Power Project (NDIPP) during the probe of spending in the sector by the Senate.

In his presentation before the Ad hoc Senate Committee on probe of power sector, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godswork Ighali said a total of N1.1 trillion was released for power project within the period under review.

He disclosed that for power projects, the Federal Government appropriated a total sum of the sum of N1.56 trillion, less the releases to the NIPP.

According to him, the amount represented a release of N948.2 billion and the sum of N155 billion as subsidy to cushion the expected shortfall in the revenue flow for the power projects.

Also giving account of spendings by the NIPP within the period, the Managing Director, Mr James Abiodun Olotu said the sum of $8.234 (N1.640) was spent on power generation, distribution, transmission and gas plants.

Senate Begins Probe Of Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Others Over Power Funds Mismanagement

Senate will today  begin an inquest into alleged mismanagement of funds appropriated to the power sector from the Olusegun Obasanjo civilian administration to date.

Jonathan, Yardadua and Obasanjo

In a statement, yesterday, by the Clerk of Senate ad hoc Committee on Power, Cletus Ojabo, the power sector probe will be in the form of investigative hearing/interactive session, just as there was an indication that former ministers of power will also be in attendance.

According to Ojabo,  the investigation would centre on funds appropriated for the power sector since 1999 and the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, adding: “ It is expected that all those who played key roles in the power sector since 1999, including ministers and heads of government departments and parastatals, will appear before the panel.”

It will be recalled that Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had last month announced a  13-man ad hoc committee to carry out a holistic investigation into the management of funds appropriated to the power sector from the Olusegun Obasanjo civilian administration to date.

Senator  Saraki had urged members of the committee to consider their reputation and integrity and come up with a report that would be acceptable to Nigerians. He lamented that a lot of money had been spent on the sector with no results, while Nigeria is still faced with the challenge of power supply.

The committee, which has Senator Abubakar Kyari, (APC Borno North) as chairman, was also saddled with the responsibility of looking into irregularities in the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN and to  also probe how the Obasanjo, Umaru Yar‘Adua and Jonathan administrations managed funds allocated to the sector.

The committee was charged with the task of looking into the entire power value chain including generation, transmission and distribution with a view to identifying what the problems in the sector are.

Saraki, who noted at the inauguration of the committee three weeks ago, that the task before the panel is huge, had however, frowned  at the continued absence of regular supply of electricity despite the country’s huge investments in the sector.

Kyari, in his remarks during the inauguration,  detailed the nature of the investigation his committee is saddled with, saying, “ To have a close look at the entire power value chain (generation, transmission and distribution) calls for a review of our policies in order to obtain optimum performances across the board.

According to him, “the abysmal performance of the generation segment is no longer news in view of the current deteriorating power supply which hovers around 4,600MW for a population of over 170 million people, despite the huge resources committed into it.”

What I Know About Buhari, Jonathan, Tinubu- Tunde Bakare

Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly and one of the conveners of the Save Nigeria Group, Tunde Bakare, has disclosed what he knows about some of Nigeria’s leading political figures.

Speaking in the second edition of The Interview magazine, which hits the newsstand this week, Bakare revealed how President Muhammadu Buhari chose him as running mate in 2011 and the role of the-then national leader of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), later the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the drama that followed.

Jonathan, Alamieyeseigha, others to attend Dickson’s declaration

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, are among prominent Ijaw leaders that will attend the event as the incumbent Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, declares for second term ambition next Tuesday.

Others expected at the event include the national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governors and National Assembly members.

The declaration will put an end to insinuations on whether Dickson, whose current first tenure will end on February 14, 2016, would be seeking a re-election in office.

The governorship election has been slated for December 5, 2015.
With his expected declaration on September 8, the governor will have to contend with other aspirants for the candidacy of the Peoples Democratic Party at a primary election to be held in October.

Commenting on Dickson’s declaration, Alamieyeseigha described the governor as a good product, that would be easy to market for a second tenure in office as Governor.

Alamieyeseigha stated this when Dickson paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday at his country home in Amassomma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

The former governor, popularly known as the ‘governor-general of the Niger Delta’ said Dickson had performed well and deserved a second tenure.

He said re-electing the governor would enable him to consolidate on the gains of the restoration agenda, stressing that it was only a man like Dickson, who had performed creditably well that could bring victory for the PDP in the December 5 governorship poll.

Party faithful, supporters of the governor from across the state as well as friends and well-wishers are expected to also attend the event, scheduled for 10am on Tuesday, next week.

N140bn Has Been Spent On 2nd Niger Bridge, Oshiomhole Insists

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, has insisted that he will not back down on his claim that the Jonathan administration expended N140 billion on the yet to be completed 2nd  Niger Bridge in Anambra State.

Oshiomhole-Onolememen

Similarly, the governor has stood his ground that the sum of $700 million was surreptitiously moved from the Sovereign Wealth Fund, SWF, for the same bridge, which has not risen above the foundation stage.

Oshiomhole, who made the claims in reaction to denials by former Works Minister, Mike Onolememen, asked him to apologise to Nigerians over his misdeeds as a minister.

In a statement released by the governor in Abuja, yesterday, Oshiomhole asked the former minister to direct his energy to the managers of the SWF, who had depleted the savings on the claim that the money was meant for the controversial bridge rather than attacking him.

Oshiomhole’s statement which was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Peter Okhiria, was made available to Vanguard in Abuja, yesterday.

“They told our committee that about $700m dollars were taken from the Sovereign Wealth Fund for the Second Niger Bridge project. Rather than crucify Comrade Oshiomhole for the disclosure, former Minister of Works should direct his energy and explanation to the managers of the Sovereign Wealth Fund who have depleted the savings on the explanation that it was meant for the 2nd Niger Bridge.

“Fully aware that not much has been achieved on that project, Onolememen and the managers of the Sovereign Wealth Funds should explain to Nigerians what really transpired instead of asking Comrade Oshiomhole to apologize to Nigerians.

“The real people, who should apologise to Nigerians for their many sins against the country are those who expended so much of our resources without any corresponding achievements to show for it.”

According to Oshiomhole, any right thinking Nigerian should be ashamed of the state of Nigerian roads, especially with the enormous resources budgeted for road rehabilitation and construction.

The governor regretted that rather than build new roads and rehabilitate them, the Ministry of Works under the former minister vandalised existing roads and made them almost impassable.

The governor said: “In Edo State, the Aduwawa end of the Benin-Auchi Road is almost impassable, especially during this rainy season. As we speak, erosion has cut off the Benin-Auchi road into two and motorists are going through hell passing through that road.

“What about Benin-Abraka Road; it is one hell of a road completely abandoned and vandalized. In the name of politics, they came trying to impress Edo people, but ended up depressing all of us.

“When we complained of utter neglect of Edo State in the scheme of things, they hurriedly brought caterpillars to site and vandalize the roads, pretending to be working.

“If you visit Federal Government roads today in Edo State, you will weep for Edo people. People should find time to pass through Uromi-Agbor road, a major highway connecting the eastern part of the country. It is an eye-sore, yet we had a Minister of Works who hails from Uromi.

“Former Minister Onolememen should explain to Nigerians how he expended the billions of naira that were budgeted for the Ministry of Works because what we have on ground as a product of such expenditure cannot score for any pass mark.

“Roads from Oyo to Ilorin, Ilorin to Jebba and Bida, from Ore to Ijebu-Ode, from Ikom to Calabar, Onitsha to Enugu are amongst the several roads that explain the sad commentary on the state of Nigerian roads.

“Aside from being death traps, they represent in graphic terms, the poor performance of the last regime in terms of road construction and rehabilitation. Rather than hide his head in shame, Onolemhemen is still oozing out diatribe against Nigerians. We deserve explanation and no amount of blackmail can stop us from speaking out about the fate of our country.”

Jonathan Holds Meeting With Ex-Ministers

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has met with some members of his cabinet in a bid to defend his integrity. He was said to have told the former ministers that he was “not a thief in office as being portrayed”.

He explained how he met President Muhammadu Buhari for 20 minutes on two issues, which include, advising Buhari against subjecting his person and former cabinet members to “media trial” on alleged corruption and; why the Election Petition Tribunals in Rivers and Akwa Ibom should be allowed to work unhindered.

He deplored what he called the involvement of the Department of State Security Service(DSS) on election-related matters in the two states.

According to sources, the meeting was held at Jonathan’s Abuja home  a few days  ago.

It was gathered that about 15 former ministers (including two who were recalled from London) and some former security chiefs attended.

One of the former media aides in the Presidency attended the “strictly private” session to put issues in the correct perspective at the right time.

But the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is central to the allegations against Jonathan, was absent.

Presidency Responds To Jonathan’s Ex Ministers

In a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam  Garba Shehu, the Presidency asked the Association of Ex-Jonathan Ministers to do a bit of self-reflection on the sort of government they handed to President Muhammadu Buhari back in May to determine for themselves if it would have been right for any incoming government, not just this one to ignore the issue of the brazen theft of public assets, perhaps the first of its kind we have ever seen in this country,

” In this  regard that there is no witch hunt or malice against anyone in the pursuit of the county’s stolen assets still stand . This war against corruption knows no friend nor foe.

“There is no intention to deny anyone of their good name where they are entitled to it and that President Buhari reserves the highest regards for the country’s former leaders including Dr Jonathan Goodluck who he continues to praise to the high heavens for the way and manner in which he accepted defeat in the last election.

“That singular action remains a feat that has earned the former president and Nigeria as country befitting commendations all over the world, the latest coming from Mr Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations who visited a week ago.

“For the purpose of emphasis, the issue of fighting corruption by President Buhari is non negotiable. It is sine qua non to the overall reconstruction of the economy and social systems  which suffered  destruction and severe denigration under the last administration. President Buhari will not be deterred or blackmailed into retreat and surrender…”

“You Have A Hidden Agenda Against Jonathan “, IYC Accuses Buhari

Ijaw Youths Council has called on President Muhammadu BUhari to extend his anti-corruption war to 1999 to cover the Obasanjo era so as to be taken seriously over his anti-corruption war.
The Ijaw youths, who are kinsmen of Jonathan, wondered why Buhari should skip the Obasanjo era and concentrate his probe on Jonathan’s administration, accusing him of having a hidden agenda against their son.

The National President of the IYC, Udengs Eradiri, who signed the statement released in Abuja last night, said it was suspicious for Buhari to choose to probe only the Jonathan’s administration and leave out Obasanjo.

The IYC noted that for the Buhari regime to be taken seriously in the anti-corruption war, the President must extend the probe to 1999 so as to probe the Obasanjo government and recover stolen wealth carted away at that time.

The IYC pointed out that while they were not opposed to the probe, they were however not happy that Obasanjo was being excluded from the probe because of the support he gave to Buhari during the last election.

“While we are not against any effort of the President to investigate previous administrations and indeed take steps against the scourge of corruption in the society, we hereby state without equivocation that the period covered by this probe is a suspect.

“It would have made a lot of sense for somebody who is genuinely interested in revisiting alleged cases of malfeasance which has held our nation back to either commence such an investigation from 1960 when the country became independent or from 1999 when Nigeria became a democracy after years of military dictatorship.

“The President’s decision to leave out the eight-year period covered by the Presidency of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, from 1999 to 2007, suggests that the current anti-corruption crusade is being manipulated to spare some sacred cows. We hold that this is unfair and that the tenure of Chief Obasanjo is being exempted because of the role he played in Buhari emergence as President.

“In fact, if there is somebody that should be probed, it should be Chief Obasanjo who lacked foresight and failed in the critical job to adequately arm our military, in spite of the huge funds appropriated for defence under him. If he had done so, the menace of Boko Haram would have long been dealt with in the early stages. It took the administration of Goodluck Jonathan to buy the weapons we need.

“This plan to exempt other leaders from the probe, if not corrected, could send out signals that the President may have come up with an anti-corruption crusade designed to protect Nigeria’s biggest crooks and to deal with perceived enemies.

“The President should be reminded that some of Nigeria’s biggest corruption-related scandals which culminated in the jailing of some foreign collaborators took place during this period that is being deftly exempted from the current investigation.

“A genuine crusade against corruption cannot take place in this country without touching some of these great scandals that are waiting to be addressed.
“It defies logic that our Dear President by this particular decision, appears to have drawn the curtain on the bribery scandal involving the six billion Dollars Liquidified Natural Gas Contract in Bonny, the KBR and Siemens Bribery Scandal, the Halliburton Bribery Scandal, which involved billions of Naira among others.

“The President should be graciously reminded that while the then Administration looked the other way, the United States Department of Justice fined a Japanese Construction Firm, Marubeni, to the tune of $54.6 million for bribing officials of the Nigerian Government to facilitate the award of the NLG Contract to TSKJ.

“Avoiding a probe into the historical corruption scandals of monumental proportions between 1999-2007 would portray our President as a man lacking in courage to confront the monster of corruption.
“This is the better thing to do rather than probing a dead man in the person of Late President Umaru Yar’ Adua,” the youth group noted.

Anti-Corruption War Is Non-Negotiable, Buhari Replies Jonathan’s Ministers

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday replied former Nigerian ministers who questioned the sincerity of his anti-corruption war, saying it is not intended to rubbish the name of anyone.
The ministers, who served in the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, had in a statement cautioned against selective anti-corruption war and warned against labelling the Jonathan government as corrupt.
In his response, Mr. Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, asked the country’s latest “trade union formation, the Association of Ex-Jonathan Ministers to do a bit of self-reflection on the sort of government they handed to President Muhammadu Buhari back in May to determine for themselves if it would have been right for any incoming government, not just this one to ignore the issue of the
brazen theft of public assets, perhaps the first of its kind we have ever seen in this country”.
“Earlier statements made in this regard that there is no witch hunt or malice against anyone in the pursuit of the county’s stolen assets still stands” Shehu said in a statement, Sunday in Abuja.
He added that the war against corruption knows no friend nor foe, he said .
Mr. Shehu said there was no intention to deny anyone of their good name where they are entitled to it and that President Buhari reserves the highest regards for the country’s former leaders including Mr. Jonathan who he continues to praise for the way and manner in which he accepted defeat in the last election.
“For the purpose of emphasis, the issue of fighting corruption by President Buhari is non-negotiable.
It is sine qua non to the overall reconstruction of the economy and social systems which suffered destruction and severe denigration under the last administration. President Buhari will not be deterred or blackmailed into retreat and surrender” he said.
He added that no one in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, can accuse President Buhari of undermining the economy when “all they handed over to him is at best, was a tottering economy hobbled by corruption and the absence of due process”.
He added that the situation in Nigeria has become worsened by the continuing fall of oil prices, which is expected to fall even further with the imminent full return of Iran to the global oil market. According to Mr. Shehu, all the president has been doing is to put things together, organize to defeat Boko Haram, pay outstanding salaries, clean up the mess left behind, improve security and restore Nigeria’s relationships with neighbours and the world.
“So what are former ministers afraid of in these things? Have they become a new trade union?
“Let this collection of ex-VIPs allow the President the peace he needs to handle the reconstruction of the economy and the nation in a manner that most serves Nigeria’s best interests.
“President Buhari does not need these types of distraction presented by the so-called association of former ministers”.

Jonathan’s Bodyguards Posted Out Of Villa

Department of State Services personnel who served as bodyguards to President Goodluck Jonathan have been posted out of the Villa to various state commands.

Competent sources at the Presidential Villa said that the signal for the posting of the over 150 bodyguards who had remained redundant following the directive by the ADC to President Buhari that they should leave the presidential villa came yesterday.

“Almost all of our personnel who were bodyguards in the villa have been transferred out of the state House. A new crop of bodyguards who were trained for the purpose have taken over. They will take over from the soldiers who were initially drafted to man the various beats hitherto occupied by the DSS personnel. That phase of transition is over” the source said.

President Buhari Names 13-Man Panel To Probe Yar’Adua, Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, set up a 13-member panel to probe two of his predecessors, late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on procurement of arms and ammunition for the Armed Forces.

The investigative committee’s mandate is to identify irregularities and make recommendations for streamlining the procurement process in the Armed Forces.

The committee, which was constituted by the the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno (retd), on the directive of the President, is headed by AVM J.O.N. Ode (retd.)
while Brig-Gen. Y. I. Shalangwa is secretary.

Other members are Rear Admiral J. A. Aikhomu (retd.), Rear Admiral E. Ogbor (retd.), Brig-Gen. L. Adekagun (retd.), Brig-Gen. M. Aminu-Kano (retd.), Brig-Gen N. Rimtip (retd.), Commodore T. D. Ikoli, Air Commodore U. Mohammed (retd), Air Commodore I. Shafi’i, Col A. A. Ariyibi, GP Capt C.A. Oriaku (retd) and Mr. I. Magu (EFCC).
A statement from presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, said

“the establishment of the investigative committee is in keeping with President Buhari’s determination to stamp out corruption and irregularities in Nigeria’s public service.
“It comes against the background of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian Armed Forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the northeast, including the apparent deficit in military platforms with its attendant negative effects on troops’ morale.
“The committee will specifically investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures and the exclusion of relevant logistics branches from arms procurement under past administrations, which, very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment.”

Meanwhile, the Presidency has declared that Buhari’s administration is not a government of probes but of due process, law and order.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, who spoke with Vanguard, yesterday, also stated the administration of President Buhari will not shy away from probing the government of former President Jonathan in the face of alleged fraud and corruption.

He spoke following an accusation of selective probe against Buhari by a prominent northern leader, Tanko Yakassai.
The presidential aide said there are sensitive matters arising from briefings and official engagements, which the President cannot overlook and described as laughable the allegation that Buhari has excluded other former presidents like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo because he was close to them.
He said:

“Let me say that officially, nobody is under probe, even Dr. Jonathan. People should not make mistakes about the fact that what is going on are routine investigations. These are matters that the President has found on the table.

So, there is nothing like a probe. If Jonathan will be probed, you would have heard of, may be, an administrative panel of enquiry or judicial panel of enquiry. But it hasn’t come to that. These are matters of routine engagements of due process of law and order.

“President Buhari in his campaign said his government was not going to probe into the past. We are not probing but as a responsible government, you cannot bring to the table matters such as we are dealing with and then, the President will wave them off.
“The Office of the President may be powerful but it is controlled, regulated by due process and the constitution of the country. The President cannot wave away matters that are arising from either handing-over or the routine briefings.

How can anybody say he was part of the Obasanjo military regime and that’s why he’s not probing them?

Speaking further, the presidential spokesman queried why the allies of former President Jonathan would wait until now to champion the cause of probing past governments before Jonathan.

He stated that it was Jonathan’s responsibility to probe the governments of Obasanjo and Yar’Adua.

“Let me tell you, if Obasanjo and Yar’Adua and all of the past governments before Jonathan needed to have been probed, why did Jonathan shy away from his responsibility? Why didn’t he probe them while he was in office? Why didn’t Tanko Yakassai ask Jonathan to probe Yar’Adua, Babangida, Obasanjo? Why do they have to wait for Buhari to come and do what he should have done?
“It is common sense. So, if he didn’t probe them, why should his people ask some other person to probe them? If they felt it was desirable to probe the past administration, as a party, why didn’t they do it themselves? Why do they have to wait for President Buhari?
“This is not a government of probes. It is a government of due process and law and order. President Buhari is dealing with the matters he has found on the table and he has no power under the constitution to wave them. If somebody had stolen Nigeria’s one billion dollars of oil, President Buhari is not authorized to wave it off under the law. He should ask questions. There is no probe going on now. People who are creating the spectre of probes in the country just want to create unnecessary fear.”

With Buhari, Our Dreams Of Nigeria May Be Coming True – Obasanjo

While receiving the executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students at his hilltop home in Abeokuta, Ogun state earlier today, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said with President Buhari as the leader of Nigeria, the dreams of a better Nigeria may be coming true.

“There is no angel here on earth. none. For me there is no messiah except Jesus Christ. but for me there are people, there are leaders who are mindful of what is required for the majority of this country and they are ready to take out time to do it. I believe that God has given us such a leader in this man. What we have seen in the last two and a half months is an indication that our dream may be coming true” he said.

Don’t Call Buhari ‘Baba Go Slow’, Neither Was It Right For You To Have Called Jonathan ‘Clueless’, Governor Dickson Warns

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has warned Nigerians to desist from calling President Buhari ‘Baba Go Slow’ saying a man that occupies the number one seat in the country should not be addressed that way. He said he wonders what those calling him the name stands to achieve and wonders how they want the international community to look at him. He also condemned those who called ex-president Jonathan too clueless saying it was nothing but wrong.

Dickson made this statement yesterday during a news conference at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Hear him;

“What are you saying when you call President Buhari ‘Baba go slow?’ In what light are you putting the President before the international community? When you refer to someone as ‘clueless’, what do you mean?”

Anyim Tricked Jonathan To Sign N1.2b Centenary City Deal, Says PDP Chieftain

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Anyim Pius Anyim unilaterally acquired the multi-billion-dollar Centenary City on the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road, Abuja, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief alleged yesterday.

PDP’s National Vice Chairman (Southsouth zone) Dr. Cairo Ojougboh said he was ready to face the ex-SGF in court to prove his sole ownership of the controversial housing estate.

At a media briefing in his Abuja home late Monday, Ojougboh, reacting to what he described as “the show of shame”, which he said Anyim sponsored against him on Monday,  accused the former SGF of acts of desperation “to cling onto his loot and spoils of office without putting into consideration the millions of Nigerians he is depriving of the dividends of democracy”.

Jonathan’s Administration Better Than Obasanjo’s- Anya

Elder statesman and President of Ndigbo Lagos, Professor Anya O. Anya, yesterday, declared that Nigeria is not yet a nation but that a nation will emerge out of her soon.

Anya made the statement at Sam Ohuabunwa’s Outreach, in Lagos, to mark the 65th birthday of Ohuabunwa, former chairman of Neimeth Pharmaceuticals.

The event was also to launch Ohuabunwa’s books, Sam Ohuabunwa’s Paradigm: Thoughts on Contemporary National Issues and The Port Harcourt Volunteer.

The professor, who chaired the occasion, said it was sad that Nigerians are not learning from history, averring that the much-criticized immediate past administration of Dr Goodluck Jonathan was better than that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

APC Lists Instances Of Looting In The Last Administration, Says No Worthy Leader Will Ignore Such Cases

Press statement from APC..

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as spine-chilling and mind-boggling the massive looting of the nation’s treasury by public officials, saying nothing but the total recovery of the funds will be acceptable to all patriotic Nigerians. In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said anyone who attempts, either by deeds or words, to sabotage the recovery efforts is not a patriot and deserves nothing but public opprobrium.

It therefore thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support for the Buhari Administration in its tough but important task of tracing and recovering the loots, while also ensuring that the looters face justice.
”It is absolutely gratifying that Nigerians are vehemently opposed to the few who would rather have the government of the day turn a blind eye to the looted funds and, in their words, carry on with the process of governance.
”Truly, what sort of governance can go on if the billions of Naira in a few hands are not recovered? In the first instance, the government needs every kobo of the funds it can muster to bring about the change it has promised Nigerians. Secondly, leaving such hair-raising funds in the hands of the few looters is dangerous, because they can use the funds to destabilize any government. In fact, no one will be surprised if the looters use their dirty funds to sponsor public demonstrations against the government’s determination to recover the funds.
”Thirdly, allowing those who privatized the commonwealth to get away is offering a thumbs-up for looting. No responsible government will do that,” APC said.
The party said that already, the looters have embarked on a relentless and an increasingly-bold campaign to discredit the government of the day and sabotage the funds’ recovery process, using newspaper columnists, ‘talking heads’ and otherwise respectable opinion leaders.
”They and their paid hirelings have tried to employ sophistry to muddle the waters, but Nigerians are much wiser, and will not succumb to the dirty antics of the looters’ megaphones,” it said.
APC said it is necessary to remind Nigerians of the kind of massive looting of the treasury that took place in the past few years, so they can better appreciate the seriousness of the issue at stake. It therefore listed some instances of the looting as follows:
– 3.8 trillion Naira out of the 8.1 trillion Naira earned from crude oil (2012-2015) withheld by NNPC
– 2.1 billion US dollars from Excess Crude Account unaccounted for
– Department of Petroleum Resources’ unremitted 109.7 billion Naira royalty from oil firms
– 6 billion US dollars allegedly looted by some Ministers of the last Administration
– 160 million barrels of crude worth 13.9 billion US dollars lost between 2009 and 2012
– 15 million US dollars from botched arms deal yet to be returned to Nigeria
?- 13 billion US dollars? in NLNG dividends mostly unaccounted for
?- 30 billion Naira rice waiver?
?- 183 billion naira? unaccounted for at the NDDC
?The party said the listed ‘missing’ funds constituted just a tip of the iceberg since they are mostly from a few sectors of the economy, mostly the oil sector, and were discovered even before the forensic audit now being undertaken in some key areas.
”The level of looting that went on in other sectors is better imagined, hence the need for all Nigerians to rally around the Buhari Administration to recover the loots, bring the looters to justice and to put in place measures to prevent such looting in the future,” it said.

N7bn Gone As Vice President’s New Residence Is Abandoned – Report

N9b extra vote stalls project
It was meant to be a worthy edifice housing the Vice President and one of the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration’s star projects. But, with N7billion already spent, the number two citizen’s official home now seems abandoned, subdued by weeds.

The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has abandoned the project, following the refusal of the 7th Senate to accept the inflation of the contract sum by N9 billion.

The builders have not been fully paid despite the release of the N7billion, The Nation learnt. Why
they were shortchanged was not clear yesterday.

The project is yet to reach 80 per cent completion, contrary to the facts presented to the Senate by the FCDA.

The contract was awarded in 2009 at N7billion. But in 2012, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sen. Bala Mohammed, came with a request for N9billion more to complete the project.

The variation was expected to accommodate a helipad. There was public outrage.

FCDA Executive Secretary Adamu Ismail later told the Senate Committee on FCT that the proposed additional N9 billion was slashed to about N6 billion by the Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP).

He said the variation was also meant to provide furniture, fencing, two additional protocol guest houses, a banquet hall and security gadgets.

The then Senate Committee on FCT, led by Senator Smart Adeyemi, however, rejected the request for the variation, which was more than 100 per cent.

Adeyemi said either N13 billion or N14 billion or N16 billion for the project was “indefensible”.

The abandoned residence has been overtaken by weeds.

Reptiles are moving freely at the site.

Although the weather-beaten red gate was under lock at the weekend, it was learnt that no fresh work had been done on the site since 2013.

A source said: “The construction of the VP’s residence has been abandoned by the FCDA since the Senate turned down the demand for variation.

“Despite the Senate Committee’s position, the former FCT Minister presented a memo to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) but ex-President Jonathan said the nation cannot afford 120 per cent variation.

“The former FEC resolved to complete the project within available budget. This is why the project is stalled. Definitely, we have a case of abandoned contract at hand.

“The same abandonment is applicable to the new residences of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

A representative of the construction company, Julius Berger Plc, refused to speak with our correspondent last night.

The source said: “Go to those who gave out the job please.”

A presidency source, said: “The uncompleted residence of the Vice President was not included in the handover note on the pending issues at the Presidential Villa.

“I think it might be part of the report of the FCDA. But it is sad that we have to cope with an abandoned project even at the seat of power.”

The Jonathan administration left N8.185, 575,211.50 debts at the Presidential Villa.

The report said the N8.1billion liabilities were outside the expenses on the renovation of the Defence House, the main residence/ president’s office, Aguda House/ Vice President’s office and guest houses under the transition programme.

The report said: “The primary challenge facing the State House has been the inadequacy of successive budgetary appropriations. The State House annual appropriations do not match its actual activities, thereby leading to regular recourse to additional funding from Intervention Fund from the Federal Ministry of Finance.

“About 283 of the temporary staff not found eligible for regularisation were with the approval of His Excellency, the President given contract appointments renewable annually, based on performance and fitness.

“However, payment of their salaries (an average of N8million per month) is from State House overheads provision, which remains a huge challenge to State House.

“The existing infrastructure for mechanical, electrical and associated components have aged and are performing well beyond their design lives.

“The proposal for their replacement/ upgrade has been reviewed and certified by the Bureau of Public Procurement in the total sum of N3,647,793, 305.76. However, due to paucity of funds, phased implementation is being adopted for the most vital and critical works, starting with Phase I in the sum of N693, 119,509.55.”

Buhari to recover govt houses from Jonathan’s men

President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded plans to recover all government property still in possession of government officials who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Federal Government’s assets including vehicles, buildings, generator sets and others were said to still be in the possession of the former government officials weeks after they had left office.

Irked by the development, Buhari was said to have set up a committee made up of civil servants and security agencies to identify and recover the unreturned public assets from the former political appointees.

The development is in continuation of ongoing efforts of the President to reclaim Nigeria’s stolen resources.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development to journalists on Sunday.

He said, “That is precisely the case. Even here at the Presidential Villa, there are cars and other property belonging to the government, which are yet to be returned.

“The property belong to the Nigerian people. We are not trying to humiliate anyone by asking them to return their cars or houses.”

The presidential spokesman however did not disclose the identities of former government officials said to be still in possession of government property.

But he expressed the conviction that the committee set up by the President would recover all the government assets.

When asked whether the state and local governments were facing similar challenges with retrieving government property from their predecessors, Shehu said that he was not in a position to confirm or deny this.

He added, however, that he would not be surprised if that was the case, as this attitude of holding on to government property even after leaving office must be a natural outcome of the culture of impunity that prevailed in Nigeria over the past years of the Peoples Democratic Party’s regime.

“But change has come. That is why we have to do things differently now. Imagine how much Nigeria will save by retrieving and re-using these government property instead of purchasing new ones for new government officials,” he said.

Jonathan’s Centenary City Project Was ‘Fraud’, PDP Chieftain Insists

he National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Southsouth, Dr. Cairo Ojuigbo, has questioned the integrity of ex-Goodluck Jonathan’s administration Centenary City Project in Abuja.

Ojuigbo, who spoke in Abuja through his lawyer,  Kayode Ajulo, alleged that the integrity of the processes leading to the project was doubtful.

The party chieftain,  who also chairs the Nigeria Export Processing Authority (NEPZA), was reacting to a report that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Anyim Pius Anyim sued him for maintaining a similar position in media interviews.

Anyim, in the N1 billion libel suit filed by his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), claimed that Ojuigbo’s position wasa slander on his person and could scare foreign investors.

Ojuigbo said had instructed his lawyer to file a counter-suit once he received the court papers.

The PDP chieftain, who expressed his determination to ensure that those behind the project, who acted unlawfully, were prosecuted, said he had petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Ojuigbo, who maintained his position, insisted that the “processes leading to the Centenary City, were elaborate and conceived to defraud the government and Nigerians.”

Senate to probe power sector under Obasanjo, Jonathan

The Senate on Thursday set up a 13-member Ad-Hoc Committee to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the management of funds so far appropriated for the power sector since 1999.

The Committee, headed by Senator Abubakar Kyari, was also given the task of probing the unbundling of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria by the Federal Government.

The Upper Chamber took the decision while passing a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, seeking the immediate reconnection of some parts of Borno State back to the national grid in view of the challenges the blackout was posing to his constituents.

The Senate urged the Federal Government to complete the Mambilla Power Project with the aim of improving electricity supply in the country.

It also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Transmission Company of Nigeria to immediately reconnect Maiduguri to the national grid.

It also directed the committee to conclude its investigations and report to the Senate within two weeks.

The senators, while contributing to the debate, also condemned the inability of the TCN to provide uninterrupted power supply to all parts of the country.

Ndume had expressed concern that Nigeria, with a population of over 150 million, produced only 4,600 megawatts, while South Africa with a population of about 40 million people produced 40,000 megawatts.

He observed that the disconnection of Maiduguri , the Borno State capital, from the national grid, as well as the degeneration of power supply across the country had affected the economy negatively.

Ndume also expressed concern that with an installed power generation potential of about 5,000 megawatts, the output distributed currently was about 1,950 megawatts.

He added that it was disheartening to note that Iran with over 77 million people “generates about 42,000 megawatts, while South Korea with over 49 million people generates about 60,000 megawatts of electricity.”

Ndume, who said that Maiduguri and its environs had been completely disconnected since the emergence of insurgency, complained that the situation had grounded economic activities in the state.

He said, “I buy diesel to run my generator and that costs me N10, 000 per day. No country can be said to be near development when there is no power.

“This Senate needs to investigate this to give the government support. For some years now, a lot of money has been spent but there is nothing to show for it.”

Senator Danjuma Goje in his contribution said that the motion was apt in view of the untold suffering that lack of power supply had caused Nigerians.

Senator Godswill Akpabio lamented that many companies had shut down operation due to irregular power supply in the country.

He lamented that in spite of the financial contribution by some states in the South to improve power supply, Nigerians were still grappling with lack of electricity supply.

He said, “In 2015, we are celebrating 4,000 megawatts, for me this is worrisome. We cannot have employment without power and Nigerians are complaining about the high cost and some localities which have not seen light for months are asked to pay high tariff.”

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, noted that the inadequate power supply in the country was a cause for concern, saying it had affected the economic growth of the nation.

He observed that the lack of power supply had plunged the country into further hardship, besides corruption.

He said, “We thought that with the Power Reform Act and the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, we will begin to see improvement with regard to power supply; unfortunately, it is not so.

“The Ad Hoc Committee that we set up should look at the activities of the Discos and what is preventing Nigerians from benefitting from the unbundling of the PHCN.”

Jonathan Did Not Lobby Our Committee To Stop Buhari’s Probe- Kukah

The National Peace Committee on Tuesday dismissed reports that it was lobbied by former President Goodluck Jonathan to stop President Muhammadu Buhari from probing his administration.
Mathew Kukah, a member of the committee chaired by former Military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, dismissed the report while answering questions from State House correspondents after the committee’s closed-door meeting with Mr. Buhari in Abuja.

He said though everybody is free to contact the committee to intervene in promoting peaceful coexistence in the society, the former president never talked to the committee for any form of intervention.

“Anybody is free to come to our committee, but President Jonathan never by telephone or by any other means sought to see the committee.

“We went to see him, but that was after we had already seen members of the political parties; we saw a few members of the civil society; we planned to see the speaker because we couldn’t see him yesterday.

“So this was a planned series of intervention essentially just to hear out everybody and I think the good news is that Nigerians are committed to a new nation.

“We are committed to ensuring that the gains and the blessings God has given us come to fruition.

“So, it was a very wonderful conversation that we had”.

This Government Is Alive To Its Responsibilities – Gov Tambuwal

Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said yesterday that, the current crop of leaders in the country are people who knows why they were elected by the masses.
Tambuwal, who lamented that, a large chunk of money meant for the development of key sectors were being diverted to fighting insecurity within the last five years, added that, insecurity was greatly undermining Nigeria’s growth and development.
Speaking while declaring open the 5th National Conference of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Tambuwal appreciated the institution for its contributions to humanity and national development.

Referring to the theme of the conference: “Security, National Integration and the Challenges of Development in Nigeria,” Tambuwal opined that, the theme was apt, hence it could help boost the already existing peace in the state.
“As I have mentioned earlier, the theme of this year’s conference is not only timely but absolutely critical to any effort at rebuilding our society and taking the country to a better place. Without doubt, insecurity is the most daunting challenge undermining the growth and development of Nigeria as a nation.

Jonathan Told Me & Obasanjo He Never Wanted To Be Vice-President – Donald Duke

Former governor of Cross River state Donald Duke says former President Jonathan told him and former president Obasanjo he never wanted to be the Vice president of Nigeria when he was selected to be the running mate to late President Umaru Yar’Adua for the 2007 general election. Donald Duke said this in an interview with news magazine, The Interviewer

“You don’t give authority to an unwilling person, particularly in a country like Nigeria. Umaru never wanted to be president. He was dealing with his health issues and wanted to retire and go lecture in a university. He was really offered an appointment at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Jonathan, on the other hand, had just been re-elected to be governor of Bayelsa and when he was picked, he was not so pleased. He said to Obasanjo and me, ‘I don’t want this job”.
If these two men never aspired to the office but were recruited to take on a responsibility as daunting as the management of Nigeria without mentally preparing for the office and having a grand vision of where they wanted to take Nigeria to, then there is a problem. The mental preparation is absolutely important. The vision can be scripted for you, but if you are not prepared and you have no capable team to help you follow through, it is grossly unfair. It is like converting a passenger on an aircraft to a pilot.”

Jonathan’s $200 Million Nollywood Fund Likely To Be Probed

A veteran thespian, Lari Williams, on Tuesday urged the government to inquire into the current state of the grant the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration gave to the entertainment sector. Williams told pressmen on Tuesday that he and others needed to know what had been disbursed and what had yet to be disbursed.

Williams added that a proper management of the sectors’ resources would help to keep it dynamic with the provision of requisite infrastructure and training schools for stage and movie performance. “There was a cash grant for the development of arts in Nigeria disbursed to the sector by the immediate past president but the practitioners do not know how the grant is being disbursed…”

Buhari Gives Hope To The Ogoni People With This Land Clean Up Action, Says APC

Complete Text of the Press Conference by the National Publicity Secretary of APC by Alhaji Lai Mohammed in Lagos, Aug 11th 2015

FAST-TRACKING ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP OF OGONILAND: PRES. BUHARI GIVES HOPE TO LONG-SUFFERING PEOPLE

President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval, on Aug. 5th 2015, of actions to fast-track the environmental clean-up of Ogoniland is undoubtedly one of the most significant decisions taken by the President since his inauguration on May 29th 2015.

Like one writer said: ”It is important to underscore here that the pains of environmental pollution and a looming ecological catastrophe are defining issues in the Niger Delta struggle – whatever that means. It is at the core of the Ogoni Bill of Rights of 1990 and later the Kaiama Declaration of 1998.”

Another said: ”Though, government is a continuum, it is instructive that a Nigerian president of non-Niger Delta origin is now the one who has taken the focused approach required to pull the region back from the brink of oil-instigated ecological disaster. Buhari’s decision to prioritise implementation of the UNEP report on Ogoniland speaks volumes for his determination to make the lives of people in the Niger Delta better.

”It is a strong statement that those who have tried to impute anti-Niger Delta sentiments to the coming of Buhari have gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick.”

This action of the President transcends all the needless arguments about the appointments so far made by him, because it touches directly on the well-being of a long-suffering people, people whose farmlands, drinking water, homes and sources of living have been deeply affected by hydrocarbon pollution.

Even if all the appointments made so far by the President have gone to the Niger Delta, that would not have been as momentous as the President’s approval of actions to fast-track the environmental clean-up of Ogoniland, a 1,000-sq-kilometre area that has been the site of oil exploration and production since the 1950s – and which has suffered pollution from oil spills and oil well fires.

The action also puts a lie to the antics of those who insinuated that the President would ignore those who didn’t vote for him in the March 28th presidential elections. As it were, undoubtedly the most far-reaching action by the President has been to the benefit of the Niger Delta, where he is not known to have garnered many votes! What a pleasant irony!

The President’s action has now breathed life into a four-year report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which hitherto has been gathering dust on the shelf since it was published on Aug. 4th 2011.

BACKGROUND TO THE REPORT

The Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland was commissioned by the Federal Government, which invited UNEP to undertake the assessment

The 2-year assessment was carried out by national and international experts assembled by UNEP, against the background of the fact that
there are serious threats to human health from contaminated drinking water to concerns over the viability and productivity of ecosystems

THE REPORT

The report revealed the nature and extent of oil contamination in Ogoniland and covered the following areas, among others:

– Contaminated land
– Contaminated groundwater
– Contaminated surface water
– air pollution
– public health

It represents the best available understanding of what has happened to the environment of Ogoniland, and the implications for the affected population.

HIGHLIGHTS OF SUMMARY

1. Though the oil industry is no longer active in Ogoniland (Shell pulled out of Ogoni in 1993), oil spills continue to occur in alarming regularity

2. Extensive pollution of soil by petroleum hydrocarbons in Ogoni

3. Pollution at depths of 5 metres

4. Pollution has reached groundwater

5. In one site, in Eleme LG, 8cm layer of refined oil floating on the groundwater serving community wells

Vegetation:

6. Damaged crops

7. Fish fawning places in Mangrove contaminated

8. Oil fires kill vegetation

9. Loss of Mangrove cover due to increased artisanal refining

Aquatic:

10. Surface water contains hydrocarbons. Floating layers of oil vary from thick black oil to thin sheens

11. Fish deserted polluted areas….fish sector suffering due to destruction of fish habitats

12. Wetlands degraded

Public Health:

13. Ogoni community exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons
– Outdoor air
– Drinking water
– Contaminated soil

14. Community members in some areas drink water with BENZENE, a known carcinogen, at levels 900 times above the WHO guideline
NOTE: EMERGENCY ACTION WAS RECOMMENDED AHEAD OF OTHER REMEDIATION EFFORTS

15. BENZENE detected in air samples at higher levels than stipulated by WHO

RECOMMENDATIONS (DIRECTED AT THE FG)

1. Establish the Ogoniland Environment Restoration Authority

2. Establish the Ogoniland Environment Restoration Fund with an initial capital of US$1 billion by oil industry and the FG

3. Set up Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration

4. Build capacity of government agencies so they can fulfil their mandates – especially that of the Nigeria Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

5. Organize public awareness campaign on pollution

NOTE: Despite the urgency stated in the UNEP report on the need to implement the recommendations, the immediate past government did nothing beyond establishing the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) in 2012, a full year after the report was submitted, and then leaving the agency to rot away.

For example, the UNEP report was clear in stating that ”Because of high rainfall in the Niger Delta, any delay in cleaning up an oil spill leads to oil being washed away, transversing farmland and almost always ending up in the creeks.”

What President Buhari has now done:

– The President has approved actions to fast-track the implementation of the UNEP report- as far as the recommendations directed at it (FG) are concerned.
– The actions approved by President Buhari, based on recommendations to him by the Executive Director of UNEP, the UNEP Special Representative for Ogoniland, Permanent Secretaries of the Federal Ministries of Environment and Petroleum Resources, and other stakeholders, include the amendment of the Official Gazette establishing HYPREP to reflect a new governance framework comprising a Governing Council, a Board of Trustees and Project Management.

The President also approved the composition of a Board of Trustees for the HYPREP.

Some US$10 million will be made available by stakeholders within 30 days of the appointment of members of the Board of Trustees for the Trust Fund who will be responsible for collecting and managing funds from contributors and donors. .

A new implementation template has also been evolved at the instance of President Buhari, and the environmental clean-up of Ogoniland will commence in earnest with the President’s inauguration of the HYPREP Governing Council and the Board of Trustees for the Trust Fund.

PDP: Jonathan, Party Leaders Move To Revive Party

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have begun moves to revive the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Jonathan and the party leaders have endorsed a blueprint for the revival and rebuilding of the party in preparation for the elections. A meeting was held on Monday at the Peoples Democratic Institute in Abuja to ratify the roadmap.

The meeting was attended by some party leaders, including Senator Ahmed Markafi and a former Minister of Environment, Laurentia Mallam.

The blueprint has already been circulated to all the party leaders. The roadmap has been well received by the party leaders and other important stakeholders.

Sunday Osanyintuyi: Wailing Wailers Academy Of Nigeria ( WWAN), Presidency & The People

I was one of those who took President Muhammadu Buhari’s assistant on Media & Publicity, Femi Adesina practically to the cross when he referred to the Nigeria main opposition party, PDP, as wailing wailers in May this year. I took that position for many reasons; one of which is name calling has no place decent democracy.  In very sane climes, oppositions are meant to put ruling administration on its toes towards viable and tangible developments. But same appears not the story here, Nigeria.
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had the honour to lead (if you like rule) our nation for 16 years without interference. The party held sway with a stamp of being the strongest political party in Africa nations.  During this period, needless to remind you that there were opposition parties among which the current All Progressive Congress emerged.  So, there was never a time any members of PDP referred to opposition party members as wailing wailers.  I stood against Femi Adesina for these and other reasons meant for another day.
But recently, the events among the two major political parties, APC & PDP are making me think Femi Adesina may be right after all for referring to his arch enemies as wailing wailers.  Femi took over the media assistant job from yet another competent, vibrant and dogged media warlord, Dr. Reuben Abati.  His touch of professionalism to presidency’s activities will be reported on this page another day.
Opposition, like I said earlier, is meant to be an alternative government in waiting. Hence, providing quality and well thought out directions on policies would be positive moves. Sad to say that just less than four months as a leading opposition in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has failed to maintain decency.  From internal rumblings to national show of shame, the recent news from the Wadata National Headquarters, Abuja of the PDP confirms the party has been injurious to us collectively in the last 16 years. Or please how do you explain a party in power for almost two decades unable to pay staff salaries under four months of losing power? An allegation of internal corruption is disheartened.  It amounts to pure charade having such jokers running the affairs of our country for this long.
Back to basics. The wailing wailers now have an academy with a serving governor in the south west as provost.  The same guy picked issues with President Muhammadu Buhari during the electioneering campaigns. He was bold wishing him dead.  Like Japheth Omojuwa puts it “The governor cursed and abused Muhammadu Buhari during the campaign, Buhari said nothing. He has been on PMB’s neck since he became president. Again, silence. I am sure when Buhari begins to bully him, let no small wailers wail”.
Up till now, the funny governor has not relented.  Hear him: “If President Mohammadu Buhari knows exactly where the stolen funds are kept and who looted the funds, he does not need all these public announcements. Rather, he should make public names of the looters and bring back the purported stolen funds, location of which he has identified. It is when he is able to bring back the money that he should make announcements of recovered funds.
“You don’t announce a process to the public; rather, you announce the results because that is what is of interest to the people. It is like you are announcing that you know where armed robbers reside, won’t they change their location?
“What the All Progressives Congress spin-doctors and their collaborators in the Presidency are doing is simple. It is such that when there is nothing to tell the people as per the rising Boko Haram attacks, dollar and other foreign currencies exchange rates, petrol pump price and other seeming failed promises of the APC Federal Government, they will accuse former President Goodluck Jonathan and his men of corruption, insult Peoples Democratic Party and make noise about fighting corruption.” If this not wailing, what is it?
Surprisingly, the governor with almost a year in the office without any tangible, concrete and visible achievement in his state but takes pleasure in attacking the president. He started by begging the president to allow him nominate a minister from his state when in actual sense such is not the story under his immediate past “hero”. I sincerely think the people of his state have to rethink him as a governor or they will live with the consequences of their decision pending his exit.
While I speak not for the presidency, the body language of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s towards corruption is clear. He had said both members of his party and any other party will face the music if found guilty of corruption. Was this the same under the immediate past administration? Can this provost point to one case of corruption fought by his boss to a logical end? Why shouldn’t this man be patient to allow President Muhammadu Buhari fail on his promise? Can the elites in his state call him to order to save the state from these national embarrassments? I think as a forward looking governor, he should find some alignments with the federal government for the overall benefit of his state rather than standing as a clog on the state’s wheel of progress.
Just today ( August 10th) the same governor has lashed out on President Muhammadu Buhari over the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari as acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, saying that her appointment does not conform with the 1999 Constitution. When did his man become a lawyer leaving his state crucial matters to suffer? He further stated that Zakari’s appointment “was dangerous to democracy” because she is an in- law to the president. How low can a state executive go to stay relevant? Leaving state matters to address non essential matters speak volume of the governor’s priorities.

Yet another wailer note for mentioning is the embattled National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Oliseh Metuh. From the visit of PMB to USA and yet to be appointed ministers, this spokesman has defiled every sense talk. He sees nothing right in the administration despite the no scandal enjoys so far by PMB’s administration.  Little wonder why he lamented recently on an online TV show: “It is cold out here. It is cold because people that have been with you for the past 10 years now decided to change because we are no longer in power. It is cold out here because people allowed themselves to be used against the party. It is cold our here because you are subject to the machination and conspiracy of the ruling party. But in terms of service, being in the opposition renews your commitment.
“The week that we lost the presidential election, some members changed. They are no longer committed and even the staff of the party are no more disciplined because there is no benefit to get. This has, however, separated those who came to reap from the PDP and those who want to really serve. Politics is about service. Those who want to serve will remain.” Wailing on the anti-corruption programmes of President Muhammadu Buhari, Metuh maintained that the government was selective. He described recent probes embarked upon by the government as political lynching. It is clear that most Nigeria politicians feed fat on the people. They barely can make a living outside government. Other wailing wailers are rife on social media parading ignorance.
To the presidency, it needs to be restated that power belongs to the people. The power that brought these set of men there will be invoked and deplored accordingly if the right things are left undone. The quality of lives must improve. Our decayed educational system must be revived with needed speed. Just today, West African Examination Council (WAEC) released May/ June 2015 results with almost 70% failed core subjects. For a thinking government, this should not only call for immediate actions but declaring emergency in the sector while reprioritizing our curriculum better. It appears the current academic curriculum in our schools do not reflect the realities. With the current trends in our educational system, the future is blink for Nigeria. Governments, at all levels, must give a clear stand on this.
Our politicians should get it straight that the era of stealing us dry is forever over. Accountability is the word. Every citizen is alive and sensitive to government policies and programmes. Every policy not beneficial to the entire citizenry will be resisted, refused and rejected. The current shenanigan at the National Assembly must be halted as soon as possible for proper administration to begin. It is rather dishearten to hear some elements are already scramming for 2019 elections as if they hold their lives.
The mission to rebuild Nigeria has started and must increase in speed. The train of progress has no party affiliation. The idea of new Nigeria should be inculcated into our school curriculum for the sake of our children as these old structure cannot sustain the house called Nigeria. The question will be when will these wailing wailers stop? I am sure the answer is until President Muhammadu Buhari stop to do the right things and join the band wagon of how politicians and corrupt civil servants used to do things for the past 16 years. Until then, I wish the Wailing Wailers Academy of Nigeria (WWAN) “Ijeoma” on their journey to abyss.

These Corruption Cases Are Things I am Just Knowing About , Jonathan Tells Pres. Buhari

Details are beginning to emerge from the private meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Nations reports that a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar facilitated the meeting.

According to the report, the meeting was at the instance of the 2015 Elections Peace Committee, after former President, Jonathan complained that President Buhari was not sticking to the peace accord they signed.

Jonathan was reported to have also sought for understanding on alleged corrupt practices and mismanagement of funds under his administration, with a source saying the former President claimed he was hearing about some of the graft allegations for the first time.

The report however claimed that President Buhari reportedly insisted that all looted funds must be returned to the nation’s coffers, adding that the President also restated his pledge that Jonathan had nothing to fear at all.

According to a source quoted by the report, the outcome of the meeting between Buhari and Jonathan formed the motive behind Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration at the weekend that the target of the administration’s anti-corruption war was not Jonathan.

The report further disclosed that the former President was not comfortable with the way Buhari moved against his ex-Chief Security Officer (CSO), ex-National Security Adviser (NSA) and some ministers, asking the Abdulsalami committee to prevail on Buhari not to rubbish him.

The source said: “For some weeks, Jonathan has been in the country to iron out some issues on his government.

“Based on Jonathan’s complaint, Abdulsalami made efforts – five times- to get in touch with Buhari but the ex-Head of State could not get through on time. I think Buhari already had security reports on Jonathan’s emissary.”

Abdulsalami was said to have been frustrated at a point and had to enlist other ex-presidents who prevailed on Buhari to allow the committee an opportunity to mediate.

The source added: “This was how Abdulsalami succeeded in securing an appointment from Buhari for Jonathan with a caveat that the immediate past President should feel free to bare his mind.”

The source further gave an insight into the discussions.

“Jonathan said he was hearing some of the allegations, especially financial sleaze, against his administration for the first time. He made it clear that he had nothing to do with some of these corrupt practices.

“He said whatever steps or actions the President intends to take; it should be within the framework of the peace accord the two leaders signed. Obviously, he wanted soft landing.

“He also pledged to cooperate with Buhari as much as possible on all steps he is going to take.”

On his part, President Buhari was said to have restated his pledge that Jonathan had nothing to fear, though insisted that there was no going back on the recovery of looted funds.

“The President reassured Jonathan that he has no personal agenda against him. But he insisted that whatever was stolen from the treasury must be returned,” the source said.

Buhari Orders EFCC To Trace Funds Stolen Under Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission to compile documents on funds stolen under President Goodluck Jonathan.

Reports reliably provided on Sunday that the directive was part of efforts to know the exact amount stolen under the Jonathan administration with a view to tracing them to foreign countries.

It was learnt that such documents would be needed by the international community, which had expressed readiness to assist Nigeria to recover the funds.

Buhari, had in a live programme, Good Morning Nigeria, on the Nigerian Television Authority, on July 27, said the international community was willing to assist Nigeria to recover stolen money.

He had said that his administration had started compiling necessary documents that would enable the international community to assist Nigeria recover the funds.

The President had stated, “We are trying to get these documents; we are getting cooperation from the international community. We are going very soon to make sure that those who perpetrated this crime against Nigeria will be faced with facts and be taken to our courts.”

What Jonathan Discussed With Buhari In Secret Meeting

Barely 24 hours before former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid President Muhammadu Buhari a secret visit in his residence at Aso Villa, the immediate past president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, was also at the presidential villa on a similar visit where he met with the president behind closed doors.

Just like the meeting Obasanjo had with the president on Friday night, Jonathan was said to have also met with Buhari in his official residence on Thursday night.

Special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, confirmed the meeting between Buhari and Jonathan. He, however, did not provide details of what the president and his predecessor discussed.

Adesina had confirmed Obasanjo’s secret visit less than 24 hours after Buhari met with Jonathan: “Obasanjo came like a thief in the night, but there are no details,” he joked.

Reports gathered, however, that at the meeting with Buhari on Thursday night, Jonathan commended the president for his effort so far in the ongoing war against Boko Haram.

A source at the president’s residence said that the former president also took time to clarify “certain controversies surrounding issues bordering on funds allegedly missing from the federation account, how the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was administered under his tenure and state of the country’s armed forces before he handed over to him (Buhari) as commander-in-chief.”

The source who does not want to be named further hinted that, on his part, Buhari assured the former president that he would do the needful in ensuring that anybody who is found culpable of corrupt practices during Jonathan’s administration faces the law.

Buhari To Probe Arms Purchase Under Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari will order an investigation into contracts involving the procurement of weapons for the military under the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this while featuring on a Channels Television programme, Politics Today, on Sunday evening. Shehu spoke a few days after the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, said he led a military that was ill-equipped.

A former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), had also said while some weapons and equipment procured by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were used to
fight insurgency during the latter days of his tenure, some others were still being awaited.

The presidential spokesman said Buhari was interested in taking stock of every naira that left the national treasury and for what purpose. He said Nigerians were aware that books were already being checked and the exercise was not limited to the oil sector.
He said, “The President is interested in every penny that leaves the Nigeria’s treasury.

“As you are aware, records are being checked right now, not only in the oil sector, but also in the various departments of g overnment.

“So, Mr. President is really interested in what has happened to the equipment that have supposedly been bought and supplied, some of which might be there on the ground or might not be.

“Only a thorough audit will actually reveal this. The disclosure has been made about substandard (equipment) in the Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.”

Shehu reiterated Buhari’s desire to urgently end the activities of the Boko Haram sect. While saying that normalcy is gradually being restored, the presidential spokesman noted that there is currently no territory in the control of Boko Haram.

“The insurgents have been degraded. They are in disarray without a central command and coordination,” he declared.
Shehu said the President would not send troops to the warfront without ensuring that they are properly equipped and taken care of.

“Just on Friday, at the National Defence College, Mr. President was committing himself to the fact that our military will be well taken care of in terms of their welfare, in terms of their equipment and in terms of the motivation they need to confront these insurgents.

“We are already beginning to see the fruits of this because as we speak right now, Boko Haram is in disarray.

“And what we are witnessing now; that is, occasional bombings and suicide attacks, characterise only one thing globally. And that is that, the dying days of the insurgency. It’s just a matter of time, we’ll get there,” he said.

FG Moves To Recover Debts From Power Firms

The Federal Government may recoup its money from debtor power distribution companies by calling on their bank guarantees.

This, it was gathered, had been brought before Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is the Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation.

Mid last month, the Federal Government ordered the power distribution firms to remit the outstanding amounts for capacity and energy invoiced against them since February before the close of business on July 24, 2015.

But two weeks after the expiration of the ultimatum, the affected power distribution companies have yet to comply with the directive.

Impeccable sources at the Federal Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company Plc told our correspondent on Thursday in Abuja that the Federal Government had through the NBET written to the Discos and their various banks notifying them of the intention to call on their respective bank guarantees.

A top management official of the NBET said the decision had not been implemented because the vice president recently held a meeting with operators in the sector and the issue was discussed.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the subject, said, “We have written to the Discos and we have notified the banks that we intend to call on the guarantees. But how much of the guarantees should we call on is something that we are evaluating. But I can tell you that there have been.

President Buhari Begins Total Probe Of Jonathan’s Govt

A total probe of the administration run by immediate past president, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is underway as the National Economic Council, NEC, Ad-hoc Committee on the Management of Excess Crude Account Proceeds and Accruals into the Federation Account, headed by the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, is to hire two international forensic audit firms to probe revenue that accrued into the Federation Account and how it was spent under former Dr Goodluck Jonathan as President.

Mr. Oshiomhole told journalists at the end of the first meeting of the committee in Abuja, yesterday that the auditors would cover the period January 1, 2010 to June 1, 2015.

It put paid to calls by the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, that Buhari should extend his
probe to the administrations of Jonathan’s predecessors, Alh. Umaru Yar’ Adua.and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Already, some revenue generating agencies have been invited to brief the committee which will take detailed briefings from all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs of the Federal Government that deal directly with revenue.

The focus will be on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Central bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, among others.

Other members of the committee included Gov. Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe, and Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom.

He said that the committee did not want its actions to be bogged down by political interpretations and that the members were not professionals. Even if they were professionals, he said that their duties as governors would not allow them the time to do a thorough work.

His words, “We held our first primary session today here with some of the revenue generating agencies that are supposed to remit funds to the federation account. We had a successful session with Customs, NPA, NEITI, SEC, FIRS, and quite a number of others and next week we will also hear from CBN, Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

For the remaining ones, we agree we are going to meet on Thursday next week, NNPC, NPDC, DPR, NIMASA and other remaining agencies.

We have started the work, with the idea to hear them out, what they have been doing, with particular emphasis on revenue accruing from these organizations and whether or not these have been remitted to the Federation Account for judicious distribution.

His words: “We realised that this is a task and given our mandate, even if we were professional accountants because we are sitting governors, we would not have the time to do a forensic audit which this assignment entails.

“Therefore, we have agreed in line with our mandate to appoint two reputable international audit firms to carry out a thorough forensic audit, not only of NNPC, which is more of excess crude, but other monies that accrued to the Federation Accounts. We have other revenues like bonuses, royalties, taxes, VAT that flow into the Federation Account.

“We are taking a holistic review of the entire process, looking at all the agencies that make contribution of funds to the federation account.

We are convinced that by appointing audit firms, we will allow professionals to carry out this exercise, so that it will be free of any political colouration and also we will ensure the outcome of the investigation will.

“We have learned, we have listened and asked questions. I think we all have a clear picture of what is happening in those organizations before now. Some have information to supply and we have drawn attention to those areas, they are willing to oblige. We believe in the end, we will be able to not just establish what had happened over the period but much more important, going forward with the changes the President has promised the country.

“It is not going to be business as usual. He started on a clean slate and everybody knows the new rules of the game and in particular as the laws apply to the various institutions are implemented in full. So I think we started very well. We are very confident that we are going to come out with something that is going to be of immense benefits to the Nigerian people”.

On the rationale for embarking on another audit report with regards to the alleged missing funds, he said “Some reports were produced by PWC but in that report the PWC expressed their frustration and pointed to the fact that they were not able to access all the information they needed and that what they were able to produce was to the extent of information that was made available to them.”

He added: “Audit can only be credible as much as information that was made available to auditors. The good news now is that with President Buhari, all the books will be open, no agency has any protection. Any agency that refuses to open the books then is ready to go on confrontation with the authority.

“The forensic audit will act on the whole truth and nothing but the truth so that all stakeholders will have basis to formulate good policies and that Nigeria will never find itself in this circle where huge sums of money are allegedly diverted and unaccounted for. Audit has become a way of life for all public institutions.”

On the duration of the audit exercise, Oshiomhole explained that the committee had looked at it professionally. “We are focusing on a five year circle. What we have agreed is that we are going to carry out an audit for five years from 1st January 2010 to 30th June 2015.

“If the audit report reveals that we need to go backward, then we can do that. But for the first instance, this is the period that we consider good.

“We can’t impose a time frame on them but will engage them and by Thursday we will be able to make it public. We need to listen to them and agreed with them on how much time will be okay for them. We are all in a hurry to ensure that the right thing is done. The emphasis is not on time but doing thorough job.

“By next week we will meet with the big ones and we will then be able to tell you the audit firms that we have appointed. They are firms I am sure Nigerians will have confidence in.

“At the end of the audit we will hear them out and reconcile them with what the laws says and arrive at a position. Given the volume of work and complicated nature of issues, we agreed we need professionals to carry out the audit. It is only the professionals that can handle it. It is not good to compromise”.

Anti-corruption war; PDP Challenges EFCC To Investigate APC Ex-Governors

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to also go after the corrupt leaders and members of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The Acting National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, gave the challenge when he received a delegation of members PDP in the senate at Legacy House, the party’s campaign office in Abuja.
Secondus, who called for President Muhamadu Buhari intervention, said that the anti-graft agency was only going after PDP members in its anti-corruption war leaving those who served under APC uninvestigated.

“ So far, statistics has shown that EFCC has only arrested members of our party, those who have served in previous government.
“But there are APC governors and members, who have served various governments, they have been left alone.

“We believe that a government that is serious with anti corruption crusade cannot be one sided or selective. It should be holistic,’’ Secondus said.
He called on the EFCC to also investigate APC governors rather than targeting only PDP ex-governors and ex-ministers.

“We have seen on the pages of newspapers allegation from Lagos and Rivers states on the ex-governors. What is EFCC doing to those allegations? ” Secondus asked.
The acting chairman, however, assured that the NWC would work with the PDP senate leadership to make sure that they were successful.
Secondus said that from the inauguration of the senate to the election of the senate leadership, the NWC was pleased with the process and those elected.

Also answering question on the allegation that the NWC spent 12 billion within nine months, Secondus said that the figure was not correct.
He said, “what is correct is that from the sales of forms, we raised over N11 billion.’’
“According to our party’s guideline and constitution, this N11 billion was meant to be shared among the states, local governments and the zones.

“The local government will have five per cent, the states; 10 per cent, and the zones; five per cent. That means 20 per cent is taken away from that.
“You are also aware that people went on assignment about 15 per cent is also taken away, the rest I can tell you was used for our campaign and elections.
“No body, no member of the NWC has embezzled any money,’’ Secondus said.

He added that the Staff Welfare Association who made the allegation had apologised through its letter to the NWC.

“We raise our money and we used our money, that is the correct thing,’’ Secondus added.
Earlier, Godswill Akpabio, who led the delegates, said the aim of the visit was to appreciate the NWC for endorsing decision of PDP senate caucus that led to their emergence as senate leaders.
Akpabio, who is the Senate Minority Leader, said that the senate PDP caucus unanimously endorsed the action of the NWC so far since May 29.

“We are very proud working with your committee, and today we pass a vote of confidence on the NWC under the leadership of Sencondus.
“We are saying that we are behind you as ambassadors of the senate; we will do our best, positively to project the image of PDP,’’ Akpabio said.

He urged Buhari to carry everybody along in his administration irrespective of their party affiliations.
He also condemned what he described as interference of the Department of the State Security Services (DSS) in the electoral matter by detaining INEC officials only in states being controlled by PDP.

He listed Akwa-Ibom, Abia and Rivers as states most harassed by the DSS while INEC officials in APC controlled states were not invited for interrogation.
“No country in the world can claim they have a democracy when it does not have vibrant and viable opposition.

“So any group aiming to kill opposition party does not believe in democracy,’’ Akpabio said.

On the PDP internal crisis, between the staff and NWC of PDP, Akpabio said that the senators were happy to note that the staff had written apology letter to the NWC.

Other members of the delegates include Sen. Abiodun Olujimi, the Senate Deputy Minority Whip and Sen. Philip Aduda, among others. (NAN

Former NSA Dasuki Releases Images Of Sophisticated Weapons Acquired Under Jonathan

The immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), has spoken of how the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan facilitated the acquisition of hitherto elusive weaponry in the last one year and recovered many local governments that had been occupied by Boko Haram terrorists.

dasuki2Sambo, who has been a subject of media focus since his homes in Abuja and Sokoto were invaded by operatives of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) the same week he left office on the eve of Eid -Fitri 2015, named some of the deciding acquisitions to include Alpha jets, APCs, MRAP vehicles, advanced artillery pieces, assorted arms and ammunitions, highly sophisticated surveillance drones, T72 and carried out modification of F7 supersonic jet fighters.
dasuki4Dasuki told PRNigeria that “The armored tanks have comprehensive NBC protection system, just as we deployed Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles that we bought and could withstand improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and ambushes. The vehicles had protected our troops from the land mine threats.
dasuki3“We are glad that we also provided assorted Armoured Personnel Carriers to transport troops to the battlefield. They are armed for self-defence and to provide protection from attacks from shrapnel and small arms fire.
“All these were acquired in the last one year after years of frustration by Western powers who denied us of the equipment and sabotage our efforts to acquire same from other sources which are reasons for some delay in delivery.”
dasuki5According to him, some other arms already paid for by the previous administration are due to be delivered soon. “It was unfortunate that some elements are frustrating the efforts as we even had to query some suppliers for delay in delivery of arms and ammunitions,” he added.
dasuki6The former NSA disclosed “we utilised some of these equipment to recover more than 22 local governments under Boko Haram terrorists and ensured that Shekau did not disrupt the 2015 election as he had threatened. Not only did we ensure that the elections were peaceful, Shekau has never spoken to threaten anyone again since then.”
Responding to critics of past administration on security issues, he said: “In attempt to rubbish individuals for whatever reasons, political or otherwise, we should be careful not to rubbish sensitive institutions and their personnel that might still be in active service.

“It is unfortunate that some elements hide under the cover of anonymity in the media to rubbish some of the sacrifices we made. They should the take the courage to come out publicly by identifying themselves with their baseless allegations. ”

Why Buhari Wants To Probe Only Jonathan- Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun does not hesitate in baring his mind on happenings within the polity, his party and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a chat with select journalists, Odigie did exactly that as he shared his thoughts on a number of touchy issues in the polity. Excerpts:

Your party, last week resolved the seeming intractable crisis rocking the APC caucus in the House of Reps, how did you achieve that?

We are glad that the misunderstanding in the House of Representatives has been amicably resolved; thanks to the intervention of Mr. President who once again made it quite clear with everybody, that there is no alternative but to listen to what the party says.

He emphasised the fact that all of us were what we were and what we are, thanks to the platform that the party provided for everybody.

I think his message resonated very intensively with all the members of the House. Yet, he did not interfere. I want to make that very clear. His parting words to us was that the presiding leadership of the House and the party should go and resolve whatever issues there are that were militating against the resolution of the problem. And that exactly is what happened.

When we were leaving there, the press was very anxious to hear that A, B and C have been appointed to whatever positions but that is not what happened. I promised that within a few hours, it would be resolved. Precisely, I said that by the next morning, the nation will be glad knowing that this issue would have been resolved and put behind us.

We left there and went a few hours later into consultations and discussions with the presiding officers of the House of Representatives. Let me take this opportunity to pay tribute to their maturity, to their sense of responsibility. I pay tribute to their loyalty to the party and above all, tribute to their sense of general good, meaning the patriotism displayed by the Speaker and his Deputy.

It did not take long, necessary concessions that had to be made were made. The very next day, I think you all witnessed the general jubilation that greeted the final resolution of what was proven to be an intractable problem. One behind us, one to go. Everybody has ended up being happy with the solution that was proffered to the problem of party position primarily being upheld.

But some members appear to have been cheated in the way the matter was resolved. Are you not concerned that the South East could not get anything in the sharing arrangement adopted by the party?

The sharing process is not over. I want everybody to get that very clear. In the House of Representatives, it is not yet over, all the zones yet to get anything will be taken into consideration when other positions in the House are being distributed, I have no doubt.
