Isis Bans Football Referees In Syria Because They Enforce ‘Laws Of Fifa Not Sharia’

So-called Islamic State declares implementation of international rules ‘illegitimate’

Isis has reportedly outlawed football referees in one of its Syrian strongholds because they implement Fifa rules “in violation of the commands of Allah”.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory or Human Rights (SOHR) said commanders had also drawn up a list of rules detailing how injured players can be compensated by their opponents under Sharia law.

Monitors reported that the so-called Islamic State had declared the implementation of international football rules “illegitimate” inDeir ez-Zor governorate.

Local sources told SOHR militants told football organisers referees would be banned because their decisions “do not judge according to what Allah has revealed” and are “a violation of Allah’s command and the Sunnah”.

A system of “Qisas” for injured footballers was also brought in, referring to the retributive justice system enacted under Sharia law, where victims can claim compensation or exact revenge.

The reported ban was decided by courts established by Isis to rule on issues of Islamic jurisprudence according to its extremist ideology.

It came before the start of league matches due to take place between teams in the group’s territory around Deir ez-Zor city.

“We’re lucky because the football we play does not run using Fifa’s name – then the organisation [Isis] would have stopped games once and for all and not just refereeing,” a player told SOHR.

The account could not be verified but would be in line with several other prohibitions brought in by Isis as it seeks to impose its bloody interpretation of Sharia law.

Smokingsatellite dishes, dancing, watching foreign television and private internet access have all incurred the wrath of the so-called Islamic State.

Any alleged infractions to its exhaustive laws can be met with punishments including flogging, shooting, beheading and burning.

Isis is currently battling to maintain control Deir ez-Zor city amid an offensive by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

The group has suffered a series of significant defeats in its territories across Syria and Iraq in recent months and was dealt a new blow this week with the killing of propaganda head Abu Muhammad al-Adnani.

Manchester City Leave Star Out Of Champions League Squad

If Manchester City thought that Yaya Toure and his agent kicked up a fuss when they forgot to buy him a birthday cake then they’re about to receive a barrage of abuse for leaving the Ivorian out of their Champions League squad.

The big midfielder was always expected to be doomed when City announced the signing of Guardiola as their new manager back in January but so far the former Barcelona midfielder has stuck around the Etihad. Still though now he’s around he might have expected some football.

Pep Guardiola

Yaya was sold by Pep to City when the pair were at the Camp Nou so perhaps his omission isn’t that big a surprise but after he didn’t get a move in the summer it seemed he might play some part in the sky blues season but clearly not. Here’s the full squad:

Goalkeepers

Claudio Bravo, Willy Caballero

Defenders

Bacary Sagna, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Aleksandar Kolarov, Gael Clichy, John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi

Midfielders

Fernando, Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gundogan, Jesus Navas, Kevin De Bruyne, Fabian Delph, Leroy Sane, David Silva, Fernandinho

Attackers

Nolito, Sergio Aguero, Kelechi Iheanacho

Yaya Toure

The move by the former Bayern Munich manager will likely speed up the process of Toure leaving the Manchester club with a move to China or the MLS likely once their transfer windows open later in the season, after all no one else can afford his ridiculous wages.

Time for Toure to buy himself some cake and find a nice spot on the sofa!

Swedish Defender Sent Off For Celebration After Scoring Hat Trick (See Video)

A Swedish defender was given the shock of his life after a referee gave him red-card for an idiotic celebration.

The defender identified as Medi Dresevic playing in the third tier division of Swedish football for Norrby IF last night thrashed Tvaaker 6-1 thanks to a hat-trick from 24-year-old defender Medi Dresevic.

But, his celebration of running to the stands and applauding himself did not go down well with the referee who had handed him a first yellow card earlier in the game.

He was duly sent off and received some harsh words from his Norrby teammates. He’ll miss their next game. Watch the video below and tell us if he did anything wrong here or the Referee was just being high Handed giving him a second yellow that led to a red Card.

Marcus Rashford Is Spending His New-Found Fortune in Exactly the Right Way

He’s a great kid, isn’t he?

Marcus Rashford picked up where he left off from last season at the weekend with Manchester United’s late, late winning goal at Hull City, maintaining his side’s perfect record for the start of the season.

Hull City v Manchester United - Premier League

United know his value, and his talent. They tied him down to a new long-term contract earlier this summer, and the teenager has made a pretty penny from his new deal. Importantly, though, his money doesn’t seem to be going to his head. Instead, he’s spending his new found fortune in the exact right way.

Rashford is reported to have put a portion of his £25,000-a-week wage to himself, his mum and two brothers into a luxury £800,000 house – just three miles away from the house he grew up in.

The 18-year-old is renting the place at £5,000-a-week, but he’s having a luxury house built for a reported £1m at the same time. The family will then move into that new place once it’s completely built, but they’ll just have to make do with this place for now.

It’s got six bedrooms and a sauna, so things should be fine. Good lad, Marcus.

I Have Never Watched United Play Under Mourinho – Guardiola

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has claimed that he has not yet watched Manchester United play, as the two teams prepare to face each other on September 10 at Old Trafford.
Both clubs have won their first three games of the Premier League campaign ahead of the Derby.

Guardiola, who will reignite his rivalry with United boss, Jose Mourinho, told reporters: “Still I didn’t see Manchester United playing, so now I have 10 days to see United, Borussia Monchehgladbach and other teams.

“We have to make an amazing performance to win at Old Trafford. I can imagine the atmosphere. I am looking forward to living that experience.

“Hopefully, they [City’s players] come back with no injuries and in a good mood and we can do it.”

Saisia: Nigeria Should Pay Me My Money And Let Me Go

Former coach of Nigeria U23 Eagles who won bronze at the just concluded 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil, Samson Siasia, has blasted the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and Sports Ministry over the non payment of his salary.

Speaking on his quitting as coach of the team, Siasia said today:

“This is not really resignation; my contract was arranged to end with the Olympics. And so the contract has ended.

“What is very important is that I get every kobo that I am owed. I need the money now than ever and I believe I have really endured and I have been cooperative.

“I spoke with a reporter but I guess the one who are referring to was extracted from the interview I granted somebody else. What I was asked was my entire story at the Olympics and this included Atlanta camping.

“Of course a lot of things happened that I can’t be really happy about especially the way the team was portrayed. But that is over as my contract has also actually ended. What is left now is my cash and that is very, very important.”

Thierry Henry Becomes Belgium Assistant Coach

Former France star Thierry Henry has been named as the new assistant coach of Belgium, the national coach announced Roberto Martinez announced on Friday.

“Thierry is an important figure. He will bring something different. He agreed right away to join us,” said Martinez, who was appointed at the start of the month to succeed the sacked Marc Wilmots.

Official: Man City Sign Bravo from Barcelona

The Chile international has moved to the Etihad Stadium on a four-year deal to replace Joe Hart, who is now expected to leave the club before the transfer window closes

Manchester City have completed the signing of Claudio Bravo for a fee believed to be in the region of £17 million.

Bravo will earn around £100,000 per week after signing a four-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, almost double what he earned during his two-year spell at Camp Nou.

The 33-year-old could make his City debut against West Ham on Sunday afternoon, and will also be registered in Pep Guardiola’s Uefa squad list for this season’s Champions League campaign.

He won two La Liga titles during his time with Barca, although he did not receive a medal from Uefa when the Catalans won the Champions League in 2015 because he did not feature during their European campaign.

It is believed the opportunity to play in both the league and the Champions League was a major factor in the Chilean’s decision to link up with Guardiola.

Bravo arrived in Manchester on Tuesday to complete his move, although it is believed he was not present at the Etihad on Wednesday night as Joe Hart started what could be his final game for the club.

Barca had been keen to secure a replacement for the double-winning Copa America keeper, and the arrival of Jasper Cillessen from Ajax on Thursday morning allowed Bravo’s move to be completed.

Mikel Obi To Donate His Own Share Of $200,000 Gift From Japanese Surgeon To His Teammates

After Japanese multi millionaire surgeon Katsuya Takasu kept to his promise by donating $390,000 to Nigeria’s team that won Bronze at Rio 2016, reports now have it that Mikel Obi has agreed to donate part of his own share to his U-23 teammates at the just concluded Rio 2016.

Some earlier reports had revealed that the NFF wanted to take some share of the gift from the surgeon, but the NFF over the weekend dismissed such reports in a series of tweets saying they only wanted to ensure due process.
“Mikel has insisted all of us will get our share of the money. That we should not mind what the people in the NFF are saying.’ one of Nigeria’s Under 23 players told AfricanFootball.
“He will make available this cash when he comes for next month’s AFCON qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo.”
”A team meeting has already resolved that both players and officials will receive equal amount of the cash with Mikel himself agreeing to give part of his own share for the chief coach (Siasia) to get more than the rest of the squad.”
‘The sharing formula agreed was a flat rate for the 22 players (18 accredited players and four alternate players) and 10 officials.”
Mikel earns about £75,000 per week at London club, Chelsea.

Allegri: Pogba Left Because I Beat Him At Basketball!

Massimiliano Allegri has joked that Paul Pogba decided to leave Juventus because he lost to his head coach at football and basketball challenges.

Manchester United signed the France international in a world-record £89million deal this month and he is expected to make his second debut for the Premier League side when they face Southampton on Friday.

Allegri revealed he had not had the chance to speak to Pogba since his Juve exit, but spoke positively about their relationship and jested over the possible reasons for leaving.

“We had a very good relationship, like I do with all the players,” Allegri said. “Maybe he was still hurting because he lost to me in a challenge at football and basketball, so it was for that reason he decided to leave Juventus!”

“We didn’t speak because among other things he was in America until the day before he went to Manchester.”

Fiorentina are the visitors to Turin on Saturday as Juve begin the new Serie A campaign looking to win the Scudetto for the sixth year in succession, with Allegri wary over his side’s tough start to the campaign.

The head coach said: “This year, once again, we had five new players coming in and we’ve only had 17 days to work together, so we’ll certainly need a bit of time.

“That’s why in the first few matches, over and beyond the question of playing well, we need an important approach in terms of character. These are difficult games, all the more so because we are at the beginning of the season.

“Fiorentina is just such a game. You can tell by looking at them last year, and by their statistics, that they always do well in the first half of the season.

“They’re a brilliant team and they changed nobody. They still have the same players they did last year, so they’ll have an advantage compared to us. It will be difficult.

“I won’t be talking about the transfer market, but the club is speaking with its actions and doing a great job to boot. We’ve brought in some great players, we’re a different team from last year.

“We have 15 days to complete the squad, then there are players on other teams who I don’t want to talk about at all.”

Guardiola: Hart Can Go If He Wants

The Manchester City boss says his goalkeeper has not made a transfer request, but admits he would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave

Pep Guardiola says he will allow Joe Hart to leave Manchester City this summer if the goalkeeper asks for a move.

Hart has found himself on the sidelines so far this season, with Willy Caballero preferred in goal for the games against Sunderland and Steaua Bucharest.

Goal understands City will soon clinch the signing of Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo, and that Hart is keen to leave after a difficult start to life under the new manager.

And Guardiola says he would allow the England No.1 to go if he came and requested a transfer, although he did insist he will improve if he decides to stay.

“Yes of course,” he said at a press conference. “I want happiness for the players, I dont want them to stay here if they don’t want to stay.

“All the players here have a contract, if they decide they are going to stay they are going to stay. But they know the situation when I spoke with them. The situation, I spoke individually with them, so they know exactly what the situation is.

“I don’t know if the players are not happy here, or if they want to stay. They decide the future because they have the contract. If they want to stay, they will stay. We will fight together to achieve, if they want to leave because they prefer to play every game… but I’m not speaking about Joe, speaking about all the players at the club.

“There is no doubt about that.”

Guardiola spoke at length about the Hart situation, explaining why he has been left out of the opening games and how he can improve in the future, but in highlighting that he was brought to the Etihad Stadium to deploy his vaunted gameplan, it is yet another clear sign that the England No.1 just does not fit into his plans.

“I was clear with what I was looking for. I am here at Manchester City because they contacted me to play the way I like, the way I grew up from 13-14 years old, and I am here to try to convince the players.

“Up until the 31st of this month everything is open with the people who are coming and the people who are leaving.

“In September I will know exactly which people are going to live together, fight together, enjoy together, to discuss together all the situations that are going to happen during the season.

“Maybe Joe will stay here and be a player who will fight with the other goalkeepers to convince me to play [him]. It’s simple like that. He knows from the beginning what I feel and what is the situation.

“After that I know he may be staying, he may be leaving, the same case for other players. That’s what it is.
“Nothing has changed.”

Although Hart’s chances of winning his place back would appear especially slim if Bravo completes his move as expected, and the Guardiola has suggested he simply is not suitable, the Catalan admits it is possible that he can stay and improve, citing the example of Eric Abidal.

“I said to him in the first moment: If he stays, he’s going to improve,” he added.

“He’s going to understand what we want, what we want from our goalkeeper. I met a lot of players at the beginning who had their problems – I’m not talking about the goalkeepers – they had their problems at the beginning, but after one month, two months, six months, one year, they became one of the best players in that position. That can happen.

“But when Willy played those two games, right now, in that situation, [it is because] he is better. Today. But that doesn’t mean it [can’t change] in the future. They have to decide if they want to stay or if they want to leave. If he wants to stay here I want to help him, after every week I am going to decide.

“An example: I met Abidal, the left-back from Barcelona, and in the beginning, the way we played, he had a problem. And at the end, he became the best left central defender in Europe, in my opinion. Fast, intelligent, strong in the air, in the build-up he was a masterclass.

“But he took time, in the beginning he was not the best, as we demanded. We demand of a central defender and goalkeeper that they have to play. They don’t only have to defend. They have to defend, and they have to play. And the goalkeeper, the first thing they are looking for, is to be safe, to keep the ball. For me it’s the most important thing, but after, it’s to play with the ball, they have to help us to create a good build-up. That’s why I’m here.

“And in the future, of course [Hart] can do that, but now in this moment, because Willy was in the whole pre-season, he was two or three weeks more than Joe because he was on holidays after the European Cup, and because I saw so many things, in those games I decided to play with Willy, but it doesn’t mean that Willy is going to play all the season, it doesn’t mean that Joe isn’t going to play.

“That I explained to Joe in China. I try to be clear with my players. I know Joe’s quality, I have a lot of respect, it’s not an easy decision for me to say now you don’t play, and I’ll play Willy, but I was clear what I’m looking for, to help us. We are not an academy where you have time. Here we have time, but not a lot of time. We won 5-0 at Bucharest and everybody says you are very good, but before you never know what is going to happen. Now in the big teams you don’t give me time to create something, people don’t have patience in that level, people have results now, immediately.

Pogba Will Play Against Southampton, Mourinho Confirms

The France international was unavailable for the Red Devils’ first Premier League fixture because of a suspension carried over from Juventus but could feature against the Saints

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Paul Pogba is ready to play ‘some minutes’ in Manchester United’s clash with Southampton on Friday.

The midfielder missed out on the Red Devils’ first Premier League match of the season due to a suspension carried over from his time at Juventus, while a lack of pre-season training had also cast doubts.

However, Mourinho revealed that the Frenchman is nearing full fitness and is likely to feature against the Saints.

“We played against Leicester with players with less training than him and we saw that match as a way to improve them and accelerate the process,” the Portuguese told MUTV.

“With Paul it’s a bit the same – he hasn’t played in one single minute of any pre-season matches but has done almost two weeks of work with us, sometimes with the group, sometimes separately, and he is okay now to play some minutes.”

FIFA Cancels Yellow Card Shown To Mikel And Two Others Against Denmark

Three Nigerian players have been given the all clear by FIFA ahead of Nigeria’s semi final game against Germany, after it was confirmed that the cautioned they picked up against Denmark has been wiped out.

The trio of Muenfuh Sincere, Usman Muhammed and team captain Mikel Obi had their caution wiped out, hence will approach the tie against Germany without any fear of a possible booking that

will see them miss the final if they beat the Germans.

FIFA amended it’s tournaments rules few years ago, canceling single yellow cards picked up during quarter final games to stem the tide of key players missing final games due to accumulated bookings.

Going by the rules, only the deputy captain of the Nigerian team Azubuike Okechukwu is suspended for Wednesday semi final clash against Germany, as the booking he picked up against Denmark was his second of the tournament.

Former Fifa President And IOC Member Dies Aged 100

Former Fifa president Joao Havelange has died at the age of 100.

The Brazilian was predecessor to Sepp Blatter at world football’s governing body, serving from 1974 to 1998.

He resigned as Fifa’s honorary president in April 2013 following an investigation into bribery allegations and was admitted to hospital the following year with a lung infection.

He was an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member from 1963 until 2011, resigning because of ill health.

Havelange represented Brazil in swimming at the 1936 Olympics – the year he qualified as a lawyer – before his election to the IOC.

As Fifa president he led the World Cup’s expansion from 16 to 32 teams, with six competitions held under his tenure.

However, his career was also mired in controversy over bribery allegations.

In 2010, a BBC Panorama programme accused Havelange and son-in-law Ricardo Teixeira of taking millions of dollars in bribes from Swiss marketing agency International Sport and Leisure (ISL) to retain the company as Fifa’s sole official marketer.

His resignation from the IOC five years ago avoided an investigation into the ISL allegations, which Havelange had denied.

In 2012, Teixeira stepped down as head of Brazil’s football federation, a position he filled for 23 years, and resigned from the 2014 World Cup organising committee after coming under pressure over corruption allegations, which he also denied.

RIO 2016: “Stay Away From Us”, Dream Team Tells Dalung.

The Nigerian U-23 team at the Olympics holding in Brazil has warned the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung to stay away from the team.

The players whose next match puts them up against Germany in the Semi-Finals of the competition noted that the Sports Minister is a distraction to the team and hence his visits to the camp is unnecessary.

According to reports, the team warned the Sports Minister and his delegation against coming anywhere close to the dressing room before and during the match.

One of the top players in the team on Monday night said: “We are set for the semi final clash with Germany.

“We have perfected our game plan to qualify for the final and win the gold medal for Nigeria like our 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games colleagues”.

I Won’t Go Back To Chelsea Without An Olympic Games Gold Medal – Mikel

Rio de Janeiro – Nigerians appear to pin hopes in Dream Team VI, going by steady manner that the team has been inching toward the medal zone in the ongoing Rio Olympic Games’ soccer event. Even though the team had been dogged by a myriad of problems, thrown at them by the haphazard manner of preparation for big events including the ongoing Olympics, the team has hardly let that come in between them and victory when it mattered most.
Captain Mikel Captain Mikel “We are ready to die to wrestle the Olympic Gold,’’ members of the Dream team have resolved shortly after they overcame the Danish team to win the ticket to meet the Germans in one of the semi-finals of the soccer event of the Games. Chelsea star player, John Obi Mike, captain of the team and one of the three overage players, said he did not want to return to Chelsea, his club, without an Olympic Games gold medal. He vowed to delay his return to his English Premier League side after helping Nigeria to reach men’s football semi-final against Germany in Sao Paulo on Wednesday.
He added that he was determined to have the Games gold to declare in his luggage. “I hope to go back to Chelsea as the Olympic champion. That is my aim,’’ vowed the 29-year-old Obi, who scored the opener in the 2-0 quarterfinal win over Denmark in Salvador on Aug. 13. “I came out here to do my best to help the team with the gold medal. “That has always been my objective. It’s my aim and the players all want the same. When you have a group of players all wanting to achieve the same thing, hopefully it will go well at the end. “Hopefully, the semi-final will go well on Wednesday and then we will be in the final and win the gold medal’’.
An ex-Eagles’ goalkeeper, South Africa-based Idah Peterside, said the team could defeat Germany when they clash in the semi-final. Peterside said from Johannesburg, that the match would be tough. “ The semi-final against Germany will be tough. We can win the match. We all have to pray for them and wish them well’’. He said the presence of striker Etebo Oghenekaro in the match can boost the country’s chances because he has potential to score goals. “ Etebo`s presence will be a great boost to the team. I hope he is okay and fit for that match,” he said. He noted that the Dream team has recorded great results in the course of the games. “All that matters now is the Gold. I am optimistic that this result is achievable’’.
The team will be certain to have the backing of many lovers of Nigerian brand of soccer because many Brazilians have not forgotten the raw deal they had at the 1996 Atlanta Games, when the original Dream team beat them to gold. The venue of the match, Sao Paulo, will offer a good setting, if the boys can reproduce the sparkle that they have shown since the start of the completion right from the tight and strangulating circumstance that dogged their path to Manaus for the opening match.
In spite of late arrival at the venue of the first match in Manaus, they hit Japan 5-4 to set the tone for a challenging event. They also defeated Sweden, 1-0 but gave a second string side the opportunity to concede 0-2 to Colombia. The result did not upset the balance as the two previous victories were enough to see the team through quarters. With a huge number of Nigerians in Sao Paulo and environs, the National team would not lack vital support to forge ahead.
Although the team did not impress during the last group match against Denmark, losing 0-2 but many said they had since put that behind them since it did not affect the team’s progress to the crucial quarters. Mike Adjuya, a Brazil-based Nigerian soccer agent, said: “I have since forgotten about the loss. Many other Nigerians will be there at the Arena Corinthian to show solidarity to the team.’’ “The team needs us now. We shall be more organised in providing the vital support.
The team will make history. I will be happy to be part of it, ‘’ noted Chinedu Nwosu, a Nigerian and Sao Paulo businessman. “I am confident the Dream Team will prevail. They have Olympic Games’ soccer pedigree. That is what has seen them through to this stage. “I have seen that Nigerian spirit of rising to occasion when a challenge presents itself, especially the many obstacles that have dogged their getting to this stage.
They are fired up now. They have a way of dismantling big soccer nations. “I see a Nigeria-Brazil finals and it will be a good advertisement for World football,’’ noted George Aluo, the Sports Editor of the Sun Newspaper, in Brazil covering the Games. Coach Samson Siasia said he was confident that his boys would deliver. “The dream is a gold medal. This vital possession I want.
I know all my boys want this as well.’’ Mikel reckons that his team has already defied the odds in reaching the last four. “It was a bit frustrating coming down here, but while we were in Atlanta we knew that we had a good shot at getting to the final or winning the tournament.’’ “With the problems we have had getting to this stage, it is just absolutely amazing and we just have to keep going.’’

Sports Ministry Refunds Mikel’s $4,600

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports has refunded the $4,600 paid for the team in São Paulo on their way to Salvador by the Dream Team’s captain, Mikel Obi.
The ministry also assured players and officials of the team that they will be given all that is due to them.

The Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Chinyeaka Ohaa, said this while addressing the players and officials after the 2-0 defeat of Denmark in Saturday’s quarter final match in Salvador.

He said, “I am happy to be a Nigerian, because in spite of all the challenges, you have taken the world by storm; you have by your performance given happiness to more than 160 million Nigerians.

Football is the biggest unifying factor in Nigeria today. From Mr. President to the average Nigerian you have made everyone proud today.

“I am humbled by your efforts, your commitment, your patriotism. I want to assure you that your sacrifices will not be in vain. Aside whatever the NFF have for you, we will as much as possible make you happy, if only you will be patient with us. Today, with your performance, I am convinced that you will get that gold.”

In his response, Mikel said, “We want to thank you for your fatherly support. In truth, there have been a lot of challenges, but every time we go onto the field, we forget about everything and make sure our fatherland comes first.

“We have done that so far and we will continue to do that, but we need more motivation.”

‘I Can Qualify Nigeria To World Cup, I Have The Heart Of A Winner ‘ – New Super Eagles Technical adviser Rohr says

Gernot Rohr, who was on Tuesday confirmed by the NFF as Super Eagles new technical adviser says he believes he can qualify Nigeria to the Russia 2018 World Cup and even take the country to the latter stages of the tournament.

“I am enthusiastic to get to work. This is a big challenge because Nigeria has big players everywhere and has the ability to do well internationally.

‘ he told the NFF official website. “I have a German heart – the heart of a winner,”
“I have confidence that with the right atmosphere and the right support, the Super Eagles have the capacity not only to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, but get to the latter stages of the competition.”
NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, happy with the German’s appointment on a two year deal said;

“We are happy that this has been sealed and we can now focus on other arrangements for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in October,”

This Season’s Result Will Determine My Future At Arsenal – Wenger

Arsene Wenger has acknowledged that his future as Arsenal manager hinges on the new season’s results, but stressed that he planned to keep working no matter what.

Wenger has just one year left on his contract and, as he enters his 21st season as Arsenal boss, faces pressure to deliver a major title. The Frenchman — who has said he will not make a decision about his future until next summer — told BBC Radio 5 Live on Wednesday that “what I will do after will depend a little bit on how the season goes.”

Wenger, speaking at the Premier League launch day in London, also told Sky Sports that he realised his tenure might be coming to an end. “You never know. You have to do it as if it is your whole life, but you know as well that you can stop at any moment,” he said. Discussing links to the England job following the departure of Roy Hodgson after a dismal Euro 2016 campaign, Wenger said: “I think I have shown that I respect my contracts and I respect loyalty highly. I did always that with Arsenal.”

But the manager, who recently said he was “scared” of retirement, added that he had no plans to walk away from football if he did not get a new deal with the Gunners. “What I will do is continue to work as long as I have the physical potential to work, no matter in what kind of position,” he said. “I will always work.”

Although Wenger’s future is likely to remain a topic of discussion throughout the season, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said it would remain business as usual. “I have not seen anything different in him,” the England international told Sky Sports. “I see the same hunger, if not even more. “For me, he has been great over the years and he continues to be. I think he shows that with his hunger every year. He just keeps going each year.

“I think he really feels like he can win and do something special with this team.”

United To Pay Pogba Transfer Fee In Two Years

Manchester United bought Paul Pogba for a world-record €105m plus a potential bonus fee of €5m, Juventus confirmed Tuesday.

“Juventus Football Club can today confirm that Paul Pogba has completed a move to Manchester United for a fee of €105m to be paid in two financial years,” the Italian club said in a statement.

“The consideration may increase by €5m on achieving given conditions in the course of the duration of the contract.”

The sum beats the previous record set by the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013, “thus making Pogba the most valuable player in the sport’s history”, Juventus said.

United said earlier that Pogba had signed a five-year contract but did not reveal the cost. The British media had put it at £89m (€105m), not including agent’s fees.

The sum paid for the 23-year-old French superstar eclipses the £85m Real Madrid splashed out for Bale.

Inter Sack Roberto Mancini

The Nerazzurri have dismissed the ex-Manchester City boss just under two weeks before the start of the new Serie A season, with Frank de Boer set to take over the San Siro reins

Inter have confirmed the sacking of manager Roberto Mancini just under two weeks before the start of the new Serie A season.

The Nerazzurri’s Chinese owners have decided to wield the axe following the club’s heavy 6-1 defeat against Tottenham in a pre-season friendly in Oslo.

Mancini, 51, had been under pressure at Inter due to the club’s failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League with a fourth-placed finish last term, having been top of the table as late as January.

And Mancini has since been dismissed on the back of just one win from five pre-season friendlies, with former Ajax boss Frank de Boer poised to replace him at the helm, Goalunderstands.

“Inter would like to place on record its thanks to Roberto for the work carried out with the team since joining in November 2014,” said a club statement.

“Last season the club led Serie A until the Christmas break, ending the season in fourth place and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

“We thank Roberto for the work and commitment he has shown the club over the past 20 months.”

Mancini, who guided Inter to three Serie A titles between 2004 and 2008, returned to the club for a second spell in November 2014.

The former Manchester City boss led Inter to eighth during the 2014-15 campaign and brought in a number of big signings last summer in an attempt to lead the club back into the Champions League.

However, Inter finished 13 points behind third-placed Roma and were also beaten by Juventus on penalties in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge Can’t Believe Manchester United Treatment of Bastian Schweinsteiger

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge can’t believe Manchester United have frozen Bastian Schweinsteiger out in a bid to get him to leave the club.

The Bayern Munich president knows the German midfielder well from his 17-year stay at the Bundesliga champions.

Schweinsteiger only left Bayern last year in a £6.5million move, signing a three-year deal as Louis van Gaal attempted to strengthen his United squad.

He did struggle to stay consistently fit in his first season at Old Trafford and could do nothing to stop van Gaal leaving the club after a disappointing campaign in charge.

But Schweinsteiger is a Champions League and World Cup winner and, despite being 32, is still a quality player when healthy.

Jose Mourinho obviously disagrees, exiling Schweini from the first team, forcing him to train with the youth team, according to reports.

He’s been linked with a return to Bayern – something new Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti has denied.

And despite ignoring talk of going after Schweinsteiger, Rummenigge has criticised United for their treatment of the German legend.

Speaking in an interview with sueddeutsche.de, Rummenigge said: “I could hardly believe when I read it. This never happened before at Bayern Munich and never will happen.”

“In the future players will think twice before joining such clubs, who treat them more radically when they want to get rid of a player than a club like Borussia Dortmund or Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga would do.

“It seems like this is the price players have to pay if they join these clubs.”

That’s a pretty robust attack from Rummenigge on Mourinho and United when neither Schweinsteiger or the club have confirmed that he’s been frozen out.

Wayne Rooney Chooses His Toughest Opponents in 12 Years at Man Utd

Wayne Rooney is preparing to celebrate more than a decade at Manchester United by walking out at Old Trafford for his testimonial against Everton tomorrow night, 12 years since swapping the two clubs and signing for United.

And as the England skipper contemplates entering the final stages of his career, the 30-year-old has been taking a stroll down memory lane, and looking back on memorable moments.

Yesterday, we told you how Rooney had identified Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes as the two best players he’d played alongside at the Red Devils, choosing the pair ahead of the various different stars he’s lined-up alongside.

Now Rooney has picked out his toughest opponents, with several famous names entering the reckoning.

Speaking to his official website, Rooney said: “There’s been so many over the years but I’ll try and pick one for each position. The best goalkeeper I’ve come up against is Iker Casillas, he’s won everything you can in the game and is one of the best goalkeepers of all-time.”

“The best defender is probably John Terry, he reads the game well, he is physical and very tough to play against. For midfield I’d say Xavi, he’s got everything, brilliant passing, vision, creativity and leadership. The best striker has to be Lionel Messi, in my opinion he’s the best player ever and I’m honoured to have shared a pitch with him.”

Arsenal Legend Lauren Claims Gunners Don’t Need Riyad Mahrez… As They Have Theo Walcott

According to reports Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has met with Arsene Wenger and is ready to sign for Arsenal, however one Gunners legend isn’t a fan of the move.

Yes, ex-Arsenal defender Lauren believes the north London club don’t need Mahrez as they already have a plethora of attacking talent, including Theo Walcott.

Speaking to Standard Sport, the 39-year-old said Arsenal need to sign players who are more direct and aggressive.

He said: “Mahrez is not needed at Arsenal.

“He is a very good player, but how many similar players in terms of technically proficient, creative midfielders and widemen do Arsenal have already?”

Lauren spent six years at Arsenal and is widely considered one of the clubs best ever right-backs, winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups.

He added: “They have Mesut Ozil, they have Jack Wilshere, they have Aaron Ramsey, they have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, they have Theo Walcott – Arsenal don’t need Mahrez.

“Arsenal have always had dynamic players – but they need to change that style a little bit, maybe be a little more direct, with more aggressiveness, and determination – which means players with a different style than Mahrez can offer.”

Lauren’s comments will surely worry the Arsenal faithful, who were left infuriated by a string of poor performances from Walcott last season.

Meanwhile Mahrez won the Premier League Player of the Year trophy as the Foxes went all the way to win their first Premier League title.

Manchester City Sign Sane

The 20-year-old winger has joined the Citizens from Schalke on a five-year deal for an initial fee believed to be in the region of £37m, which could rise to £42m based on add-ons

Manchester City have completed the signing of Schalke winger Leroy Sane on a five-year deal.

Sane had been linked with a number of clubs throughout the summer but has opted to move to the Citizens, with the Premier League club parting with a reported £37 million to secure the signature of the 20-year-old.

It is also understood that the deal could eventually rise to £42m due to add-ons.

Sane, who came through the youth ranks at Schalke, scored 13 goals in 57 senior appearances for the club and was also named in the Germany squad for Euro 2016.

And the young attacker has now revealed that he cannot wait to begin work under Pep Guardiola as the new Premier League season draws near.

“I feel really good, I’m happy to be here and happy that it has all worked out. Now I can settle here in Manchester and play for City,” he said.

“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career.

“I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players.

“I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

Sane becomes Guardiola’s fifth signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Aaron Mooy, and the Catalan coach has lavished praise on his latest recruit.

“He is a special talent, and an exciting player that I think our supporters will enjoy watching,” he added.

“He has great technical ability, is comfortable on the ball and there is much to admire about the way he plays football. He is fast, enjoys creating chances for others, works hard for the team and scores goals, too. He also has a very positive attitude and will fit in well with our squad.

“At 20, he is still developing as a player but he is already a member of the German national side and I think he will be a fantastic asset to our Club. We are very happy he decided to join us.”

“I Was Unfairly Treated At Manchester United” – Moyes

The Scot, now Sunderland manager, insists that he was not given a fair crack of the whip at Old Trafford, but maintains that his spell at the club made him better

David Moyes believes he was harshly treated by former club Manchester United as he looks ahead to his tenure with Sunderland.

Fronting the media as Sunderland manager, Moyes opened up on his time at Old Trafford, where he was sacked less than a season into a six-year deal with the Premier League giants.

However, Moyes – who was ultimately replaced by Louis van Gaal ahead of the 2014-15 campaign – has now hit back at his former employers after his move to the Stadium of Light.

“I’ve said all along that I was (unfairly treated). When you sign a six-year contract and you end up there ten months, yeah, I believe I was,” said the Scot.

“But that is life in football. Ultimately the key is to win football matches. I didn’t win enough football matches.

“You must say there were mitigating circumstances. And I think you could say there are maybe things that have gone on since then, that would actually justify that even more so.”

Nevertheless, Moyes believes that his brief spell at United did wonders for his career.

“It gave me an unbelievable idea of what it is at the top,” he added.

“I believe that’s where I can work and that’s where I should be working, and my level is that, because that is what I saw in the time I was there.

“You don’t get offered those jobs, you don’t get offered big jobs, if you’ve not done something. You don’t get offered the Real Madrid job, the Barcelona job, the Manchester United job, if you’ve not had something to suggest that there’s a reason for that job.

“Yeah I am better [as a manager]. I have had several opportunities, big ones, but timing is so positive. The timing for this job at Sunderland was right. It feels good to me.”

After being fired from Old Trafford, Moyes went on to coach Real Sociedad in La Liga, where he was also sacked after a promising start.

“Messi is The Best Footballer Of All Time” – Pope Francis

Pope Francis says that he thinks Lionel Messi is the best footballer of all time.

Pope Francis said this in Krakow, Poland, during lunch while on a trip for the World Youth Day gathering, according to sport-english.com.

He was joined by 12 youths and one of them asked him, “Who is better, Maradona or Pele?” and the pope responded, “For me, Messi,” without giving further explanation.

A response that the participants at the lunch enjoyed – and none of them were Argentine.

Reports say nearly three million pilgrims made it to the mass he was celebrating on the final day of a five-day to Poland, as the 1,050th anniversary of Poland’s adoption of Christianity was celebrated.

Wenger: ‘Powerful’ Oxlade-Chamberlain Has It All

The England international was on target for the Gunners against Guadalajara and the manager is desperate to have him at full fitness for the new season

Arsene Wenger is keen to get Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fit for the start of Arsenal’s Premier League campaign because “he has it all”.

Oxlade-Chamberlain initially suffered knee ligament damage in the Champions League clash with Barcelona in February, but a further injury in May ruled him out of England’s Euro 2016 campaign.

The 22-year-old scored his second goal of pre-season in Sunday’s 3-1 friendly victory over Guadalajara with a sublime solo effort and the Arsenal boss is eager to have him ready for competitive action when they face Liverpool in the top-flight opener on August 14.

“[He gives us] power, penetration. He has it all, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It’s difficult [to say] what he doesn’t have – that’s why I would like him to get to the level he can go to,” Wenger said.

“Maybe he doesn’t completely believe himself how good he can be and that’s the final step for him.

“It’s a very important season for him. He has been out for a long, long time. He has been injured and did not go to the European Championship, like he should have done if he had been fit.

“That’s why I’m cautious with him. I gave him 45 minutes [against MLS All-Stars], now 70 minutes [against Guadalajara]. I hope I can get him through and fit for the start of the season.”

Granit Xhaka has been Arsenal’s only big-name signing of the close-season, but the club have been linked to the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Riyad Mahrez and Alexandre Lacazette.

Wenger, however, would not be drawn on whether any new additions were imminent.

“We have not closed any deal with anybody at the moment,” he said.

“You speak about Mustafi. Is it Mustafi or anybody else – we haven’t concluded anything at the moment.

Arsene Wenger May Buy An “Experienced Striker” Soon.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has admitted that he is trying to sign an “experienced” striker this summer.

The Gunners have already signed Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding and Tasumo Akano, but with only Olivier Giroud as their recognised forward, Wenger is still searching for a new player.

Speaking after his team defeated the MLS All-Stars 2-1 in San Jose, Wenger said: “At the moment I have not too many attacking options in terms of experienced players,” he said.

“But let’s not forget we still have a few players at home.

“There are also a few players who did not play [against the MLS All-Star team], like [Santi] Cazorla and of course [Mesut] Ozil and [Aaron] Ramsey are at home. [Olivier] Giroud is also not here.

“So we have options but we will still look outside to find one more.”

EPL Transfer Funds: “Rivals’ Budget Quite Scary” – Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says “it’s quite scary” to look at the money being spent to strengthen his Premier League rivals ahead of the new season.

Wenger spent £30 million on Granit Xhaka in May, but has yet to make another major signing, while the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea have both brought in several expensive reinforcements.

Manchester City are also closing in on a big-money deal for John Stones that could reach as much as £50 million, while United have agreed a record-breaking fee of €120m to buy Paul Pogba from Juventus, sources have told ESPN FC.

Wenger is still searching for a striker and a forward as the Gunners try to improve on their second-place finish with a first Premier League title since 2004. But the Frenchman has acknowledged that the money being spent by other clubs will make things a lot more difficult in the upcoming campaign.

“It’s a big ask, because when you look at the Premier League, every club is hugely ambitious,” Wenger said after Arsenal beat the MLS All-Stars 2-1 in San Jose, California.

“You look at the cheques that everybody signs and it’s quite scary. That’s what the Premier League is about at the moment.”

Wenger is entering the final year of his contract and is under huge pressure to deliver a big title. When asked if another top-four finish in the league — which he has delivered in all 20 of his previous seasons — would be enough this time, the Arsenal boss said: “It’s never enough. I personally believe that no matter what you do, it’s never enough.

“You have to give absolutely everything to take the best out of the team. I believe that we know what we have to do, because we were second last year, we had 18 teams behind us.”

The Gunners will have to make do without Per Mertesacker for several months after the centre-back sustained a serious knee injury and Wenger reiterated in an interview with ESPN that he still wants an offensive and a defensive signing before the end of the summer transfer window.

“We were a bit short on goals scored [last season], so we will try certainly to strengthen a little bit in that department,” Wenger said. “Defensively we need to bring some more experience into our squad. I think in the middle of the park we have enough players.”

Meanwhile Arsenal’s rivals continue to splash the cash.

Bastian Schweinsteiger Retires From International Football

The midfielder brings an end to a 12-year spell with the Germany national team, during which he won the World Cup and picked up a silver medal from the European Championship

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has announced his retirement from international football after making 120 appearances for Germany.

The 31-year-old is one of his country’s most capped players and featured in five games for Die Mannschaft at Euro 2016 as they reached the semi-finals before losing out to hosts France.

Schweinsteiger, who made his debut for the national team in 2004, won one World Cup title as Joachim Low’s men beat Argentina in the final in 2014, after finishing third in 2006 and 2010. He also picked up a silver medal from Euro 2008.

And the Manchester United midfielder has published a statement declaring that his time with the German national team has come to an end.

“I have recently asked the coach to not nominate me for the national team anymore because I would like to retire,” he wrote.

“I was allowed to collect 120 caps for my country and I lived some moments which have been indescribably beautiful and successful.

“Jogi Low knew how much Euro 2016 in France meant to me because I really wanted to win that title we have not been able to win since 1996.

“It was not meant to be, I have to accept that.

“By winning the World Cup in 2014 we achieved something on a historic and emotional level that I cannot reproduce in my career.

“That’s why it is right and reasonable to finish it and to wish the team all the best for the qualifiication for the 2018 World Cup.

“With this decision I leave the national team that has always been a precious family for me. I hope that the connection will still remain strong in one way or the other.

“I would like to say to our fans: ‘It was an honour to play for you guys. Many thanks for everything that we have gone through together’.”

Nigeria’s Olympic Squad Suffering in Training Camp, Siasia Owed 5 Months Salary.

Head coach of Nigeria’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia, has revealed that he is being owed salaries for five months, by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Siasia is currently in Atlanta, Georgia with his squad, as they continue to prepare for next month’s Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

“We are suffering in Atlanta. We have not received any money since we arrived this training camp. I have not been paid for the past five months,” Siasia said.

“We will not hold the country to ransom by threatening not to play our matches, but the government has to come to our rescue.

“I know that by the time the Olympics will be over, our monies will not be paid.”

The Dream Team VI are scheduled to fly to Brazil from USA on Friday.

Nigeria Official Re-ignites ‘Lesbian’ Claims In Women’s Football

Football Federation (NFF) official has blamed lesbians for recent poor performances of the country’s women’s team, repeating a claim that FIFA has previously condemned.

The Super Falcons are the most successful African nation in the game, having won the continental title a record nine times and competed at every Women’s World Cup since it started in 1991. But they have failed to qualify for this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and were also under-par in last year’s All Africa Games in Congo.

NFF vice-president Seyi Akinwunmi blamed the decline in the women’s game nationally to same-sex relationships, which are illegal in religiously conservative Nigeria.

“Lesbianism kills teams,” he complained at a meeting of sports writers in the southwestern city of Ibadan on Saturday, in comments reported in national newspapers on Monday. “People are afraid to talk about it.

The coaches also take advantage of the girls, so there is much more to build in female football.” Akinwunmi was not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP.

Alicia Keys To Perform At First Champions League Live Show

Alicia Keys is to become the first singer to play live at the opening ceremony of the Champions League Final.

The show will see the singer perform to around 80,000 people in Milan’s Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on 28 May and to TV audiences in over 220 countries.

Keys, who will be debuting new music in the show, said playing to such a huge audience was “pretty insane”.

European football’s governing body Uefa said Keys’ inclusion “heightens even further the appeal of the match”.

Keys, who recently joined Season 11 of NBC’s The Voice in the US, said she was looking forward to returning to Italy, a place that feels like home to her.

“My mother’s family is from Italy, so whenever I go, I always feel the most loved,” she said.

“I feel like it’s a homecoming of love in a lot of ways.”

Uefa said Keys’ performance will usher in a new live entertainment era for the final, which intends to “merge the worlds of world-class music, entertainment and sports, as well as celebrate design and fashion as a nod to the host city, Milan”.

“This is going to be a powerful moment in history and one that represents the spirit of all the similarities we share no matter where we live and who we are,” Keys said.

“I’m honoured to be a special part of such a beloved experience.”

The 2011 opening ceremony at London’s Wembley Stadium saw Tinchy Stryder perform a specially-written rap about the game between Manchester United and Barcelona.

Official: Antonio Conte Confirmed As New Chelsea Manager

The Italy coach will remain in charge of the Azzurri at Euro 2016, after which he will take the reins at Stamford Bridge having beaten off plenty of competition to land the job

Antonio Conte is the new manager of Chelsea, the club have confirmed, with the Italy boss ending months of speculation by finally penning terms in London on Monday.

The 46-year-old has put pen to paper on an THREE-year contract but will not take charge of the club until after the European Championship in France this summer, where he is looking to guide the Azzurri to only their second continental win.

Chelsea have been looking for a long-term successor to Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese was sacked in December, with popular interim boss Guus Hiddink unwilling to take on the job permanently.

The Blues are still unbeaten in the Premier League since the Dutchman took over – their 15-game streak is the longest undefeated run in the division this season – and still have a slim chance of qualifying for Europe.

The lack of Champions League football has not put Conte off, however, with the Italian beating off competition from the likes of Copa America-winning coach Jorge Sampaoli to land the Stamford Bridge job.

Conte arrives in England with a hugely impressive CV, having won the Scudetto in three consecutive seasons with Juventus between 2011 and 2014 and helping lay the foundations for the Old Lady’s recent dominance of Italian football.

He fared less well in the cup competitions, however, losing the Coppa Italia final to Napoli and failing to progress further than the quarter-finals of the Champions League – even crashing out at the group stage in his final season at the club.

After replacing Cesare Prandelli as Italy manager two years ago, Conte oversaw an unbeaten qualification campaign for Euro 2016, though he will step down to take charge of Chelsea after this summer’s tournament.

“I Could Retire In The Summer” – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The 34-year-old had previously confirmed interest from the Premier League, but his next move could be one that no-one had anticipated as he considers calling it a day

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has said that he could retire in the summer, when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain will expire.

The 34-year-old Swede has been subject to a great deal of transfer speculation with his time in France apparently winding down, with clubs all over the world interested in the free agent. However, the veteran attacker, who is on course of his best ever scoring season, has produced a curve ball by suggesting he could hang up his boots.

“Anything could happen next summer… maybe I’ll just retire,” he told TV4. “Nobody’s thought of that possibility. I would prefer to go out at the top.”

Ibrahimovic has previously confirmed that there has been interest from England, where West Ham have confirmed they are seeking to make an eye-catching move for the striker, and though he reiterated this, he said there is some way to go before any decision is made.

“When all the cards are on the table, I’ll see which direction I want to take,” he said.

‘Johan Cruyff Put Dutch Football On The Map’ – Gullit

The former Milan midfielder, who played alongside the Dutch great for Feyenoord during the eighties, has lauded his impact on football after hearing the news of his death

Ruud Gullit says Johan Cruyff was responsible for “putting Dutch football on the map” following the former Netherlands forward’s death.

Cruyff passed away from cancer at the age of 68 on Thursday after a wonderful and inspirational career as player and coach, most notably for Ajax and Barcelona.

Gullit, who played alongside Cruyff as a youngster at Feyenoord, has hailed him as an important mentor throughout his fledgling career and for the impact he had on raising the profile of Dutch football.

He told Telesport: “I’m shocked. I thought he was doing better.

“Netherlands have lost a face in the world. He’s the one who put our football on the map.

“He was decisive for my career.”

Manchester United Worth $1billion Less Than When Louis Van Gaal Took Over As Manager

Manchester United has suffered a spectacular financial decline in the last one year. It’s been revealed that over $1billion has been wiped off the club’s share price value from July 2014 to March 2016.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal took over management reins at the club in the summer of 2014, after leading Holland to third place at the World Cup. Since he joined Man U, the club’s share price has dropped by $6.25. It went from $19.58 to $13.33, on the close of the New York Stock Exchange on March 23 2016. Over the same period, the US stock market has risen by 3 percent.

“Football clubs typically don’t present a particularly attractive investment proposition because their revenues are lumpy, and their employees are rather expensive,” said stock market analyst Laith Khalaf.

“Mistakes on the pitch can be costly for shareholders too – in 2015 Manchester United’s broadcast revenues dropped by £30 million as it failed to qualify for the Champions League in that season. So far this year things seem to be picking up with a bounce in revenues, but if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League this season, next year could be a fallow one for investors.”

Ibrahimovic Offered £59million Deal To Move To China

The man with the biggest ego in football, otherwise known as Ibracadabra, has worked his magic again. Who else gets an offer this huge? The PSG star is out of contract at the end of the season and with many top clubs falling over themselves to land the talismanic striker, he can have his pick of the bunch. One offer that has stood out though is from the Chinese Super League, the Asian nation is so eager to have the 34-year-old, the government is willing to finance a deal.

If he settles for the lucrative deal, it will be the ideal ride into the sunset for a player whose trophy cabinet creaks under the weight of his many medals.

‘I Was Scared Meeting Terry, Drogba, Shevchenko’ — Mikel

Nigerian star, John Mikel Obi has revealed that he was consumed with fears on his first day at Chelsea’s dressing room becuase of the presence of superstars, such as John Terry, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Andrily Shevchenko among others.

The latest edition of the official magazine of the club, known as ‘Chelsea’, features an exclusive interview with John Mikel Obi. The elegant enforcer will reach the 10-year mark in the summer.

In fact, the Nigerian can still remember vividly his first day at our Cobham training round when he joined as a fresh-faced 19-year-old.

‘I came into the dressing room that day literally shaking,’ he recalls. ‘I saw the players that were in there – the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Claude Makelele, Geremi, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko – it was crazy. And I was just 19

‘I was shaking the whole day because I couldn’t talk to any of them. I didn’t know what to say to guys like that. They were really nice guys, but it was scary. It can be tough coming into a dressing room like that as a younger player. You had to earn the right to be among them.’

He has certainly done that over the years, and this season he has played a key role in the Blues’ improved form in the new year. Guus Hiddink has spoken about him in glowing terms and Mikel is pleased with his role in the team.

‘I love doing my defensive duties, but at the same time I love having the ball and always trying to be available so we can play out from the back,’ he said. ‘This is something we’ve talked about, something the manager has stressed – trying to play out from the back so we can always be in control of the game. I think doing this we have much more possession of the ball.

‘I like having the ball and making the team play. When I was young, my natural position wasn’t as a defensive midfielder so maybe that gives me a bit of an edge.’

‘Samson Siasia Has Better Coaching Pedigree Than Oliseh’ – Onigbinde

Former CAF and FIFA instructor and one time coach of the Super Eagles Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has hailed the appointment of u-23 coach Samson Siasia as the new Super Eagles interim coach, saying he is better suited to the job than Sunday Oliseh, who was temperamental and didn’t have any experience for the role.

“When Oliseh was being appointed, I did not raise objection to it but I was particular about his background,” Onigbinde told completesportsnigeria.com. “And with the new people that have come on board, I believe they have better coaching pedigree than Oliseh.
And that was my objection when Oliseh was appointed, question of experience and behaviour, those were the two issues I raised. And during his tenure, he exhibited lack of all those things clearly. Siasia has been there once and I hope he would have learnt his lessons. I remember when he first came, in a meeting with the technical committee, I cautioned him on a certain step he was taking. I have no reason to hate any football coach in this country or anywhere, but we are talking about the fate of our country. And just about two weeks ago, as if I knew, I sent a message of commendation to Amuneke.” He added: “What is important is they getting there and doing what they are supposed to do. Where they feel that they have problems, if they see some people around them who could put them through, they should not hesitate because nobody is an island.”

‘I Had To Foul Lucas!’ – Mikel Unfazed By PSG Error

The midfielder conceded the free kick which Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored from, via a deflection off the Chelsea man, only to cancel out the strike in the 2-1 loss

John Obi Mikel has dismissed criticism over his part in Paris Saint-Germain‘s opening goal asChelsea lost in the Champions League last-16 first leg, insisting he had to foul Lucas Moura.

The midfielder was penalised for bringing down the Brazilian just over 25 yards from goal, before turning his back on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s strike which deflected off him and into the net.

Mikel, though, made amends with the last action of the first half, taking advantage of slack defending in the PSG penalty area to hammer home from a corner.

“I had to fall in because Lucas was going deeper and deeper into our 18-yard box,” Mikel told BT Sport. “I had to – if not get the ball – foul him, which I did.

“Then the free kick just skipped off my feet and went into the back of the net. But we came back strong as well, but we’re very disappointed to have lost the game.”

Chelsea fell to a 2-1 loss, with substitute Edinson Cavani netting a late winner, but Mikel insists it was a case of mission accomplished after securing a valuable away goal.

“Our aim was to come out here and get a goal and we’ve done that,” he said. “We still have the second leg to play, so we have to take that back home and capitalise on.

“We must make sure we build on that. We know they’re a very good team.”

NFF Fines Sunday Oliseh $30,000 Over ‘Insane’ Video Rant

The Nigerian Football Federation has reportedly fined Sunday Oliseh $30,000 for his ‘insane’ outburst last week in which he claimed that his former colleagues and critics were insane to ask for his sack just because he had lost two games in 11 matches the Super Eagles have played since his reign.
The 41-year-old posted an 8-minute video on his website to hit back at what he called the ‘insanity’ of his critics. The coach has since apologized to the NFF for his outburst aimed at the Nigerian media as well as his critical former international teammates.

It is also believed that Sunday Oliseh will consult his lawyers to contest the fine imposed on him by the football body.

On Tuesday, top chiefs of the football body led by Amaju Pinnick held a meeting with the sports minister Barr. Solomon Dalung on the future of the embattled chief coach.

After Nigerians and football lovers criticized the Delta born coach for not appreciating his job by calling his critics insane, the embattled Super Eagles took to twitter to address the situation..

He Tweeted;

“When I spoke of critics I did not mean the general public of Nigeria! I would never dare refer to my beloved country men as insane!”

“How dare I insult 170 Million people who I love and have shown me so much love. Please forgive the error of editing! God bless you all.”

Since Sunday Oliseh assumed leadership of the Super Eagles following the sack of Stephen Keshi, he has not been short of controversies.

Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike have resigned from the Super Eagles following squabbles with the coach while following the team’s exit from the just concluded CHAN, Oliseh blasted the NFF for not properly motivating the players by not paying them their salaries .

Giwa Versus NFF : Court Adjourns Hearing To March 10

A Federal High Court sitting in Jos on Wednesday adjourned the case filed by Chris Giwa to relist his case against Amaju Pinnick, President, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), to March 10, 2016.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that Giwa had approached the court to declare him the President of the NFF and, the election of Aug. 26, 2014 that brought him, be upheld.

The case was withdrawn following pressures from major football stakeholders and threat by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), to sanction the country.

But Giwa, through his counsel, Mr Habila Ardzard, filed a request that the case be relisted.

Counsel to NFF and the Ministry of Sports, Mr Damon Dashe, filed an affidavit and requested for more time to prepare for the defense.

The defense counsel also requested for an adjournment to enable the lead counsel Festus Keyamo who was absent in court on Wednesday, to appear in the next hearing.

The judge, Justice Musa Kurya, accepted the request and adjourned the case to March 10 for hearing.

Vardy: I Pinch Myself Every Day

The striker says he would “never in a million years” have thought he would be the Premier League’s top scorer

Jamie Vardy has admitted he “pinches himself every day” after reflecting on his remarkable journey to becoming the Premier League’s top goalscorer.

Vardy’s 18-goal haul has helped to fire Leicester City to the top of the Premier League – five points clear of second-placed Tottenham.

The Foxes defeated Manchester City 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to cap off a dream week that saw him sign a new three-and-a-half year deal.

“I do have to pinch myself every day really but it has taken a lot of hard work to be honest,” said Vardy, who was playing non-league football and working a full-time job only three years ago.

“It wasn’t nice playing and having to work full-time all day, so I had to put the work in at first just to get a half-decent club.

“It’s a rise that I wouldn’t have predicted to happen but it’s credit to me for the work I’ve put in as well.

“I literally wish I could play football every day and can carry on playing.”

The 29-year-old said his apprenticeship in the game made him appreciate his job more than most professional footballers.

“You hear some players say that it’s just a job for them but for me it is nothing like that,” he said.

“I’ve worked so hard to get here and I want to keep being here as long as I can. I enjoy every minute of it.

“When I was at Halifax I never thought I would earn a move to the Conference but I got that, then kicked on and from there you would never have thought there would be a move to Leicester, then playing for England.

“You would never have thought it in a million years. But it has happened. It has all worked out well but there has been so much hard work put in it’s untrue.”

Mata Angry With Chelsea Draw

Diego Costa’s injury-time equaliser denied Manchester United a win on Sunday, leaving the midfielder annoyed at their inability to see the game out

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata revealed his frustration after his side’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Jesse Lingard gave United the lead on 61 minutes but Diego Costa’s injury-time equaliser meant Louis van Gaal’s side had to settle for a point.

“We played very good football,” Mata told Sky Sports.

“Coming here to Chelsea isn’t easy, but particularly in the first 30 minutes and in the second half we played well – we had it so close.

“But Chelsea were always pushing and they scored a late goal and we didn’t have any time to get another goal. It’s frustrating.”

Despite his annoyance, Mata said he was happy with United’s recent form.

“When you win and when you play good football, confidence grows,” he said. “I think we’re showing now that we can play a high level of football and can play attractive, offensive football.

“That’s what we’re trying to do – that’s what the fans want to see, so we try our best in every game. I think the last three or four games we’ve played really well.”

Oliseh Flees Nigeria, Accuses Staff Of Witchcraft

As the zero hour approaches for the must win double header AFCON qualifier against the Pharaohs of Egypt on March 23, Sports Vanguard can reveal the real reasons why coach Sunday Oliseh may continue to tinker the Eagles from his base in Belgium.

After contracting a virus in one of his official assignments, camp sources informed that the former Juventus player has alleged occultic manipulations by his enemies on his life and has vowed to flee far from the country to where they could not fly to attack him.

Oliseh

“He is always scared in camp and suspicious of even members of his back room staff”, a close source to the team informed.

The source said that the outspoken coach allegedly confronted his staff and warned them that there were many witches and wizards who were trying to undermine the success of the Eagles.

“He warned those fond of putting their hands in their pockets before shaking him to desist or keep their handshakes as he feared they touch objects concealed in their pockets before offering to shake him”, the source said. Also, the coach alleged that many of the people surrounding him do not believe in the success of the team as he claimed that they don’t rejoice when the Eagles score goals.

Beyond the trivial accusations of witches and wizards, Sports Vanguard also gathered that the coach had written to the federation to pay his outstanding N10 million accommodation fee as agreed in his contract(N5 million for 2015 and another N5 million for 2016) if they want him to reside in Nigeria as he said he would not stay in the hotels when the Super Eagles are not in camp.

Suarez Rules Out Neymar Leaving Barcelona

The former Liverpool striker insists there is no chance of the Brazil international leaving the Spanish champions despite reported interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United

Luis Suarez insists there is no chance of Neymar leaving Barcelona in the summer, despite the mounting speculation over his future.

The Brazil international is currently involved in a protracted wrangle over a new contract which has alerted the likes of Manchester United and even Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old’s situation has been further complicated by the ongoing investigations into alleged fraud and corruption relating to his move to Barcelona in 2013.

But Suarez, speaking after he and Lionel Messi scored all seven goals in the thumping Copa del Rey first leg win over Valencia on Wednesday, dismissed any notion of Neymar swapping Camp Nou for the Bernabeu or the Premier League in the near future.

“I am convinced that Neymar will remain at” Barcelona,” he said.

“The club supports him, and I am sure that he will play here for many years.”

Mesut Ozil Dethroned As Europe’s Assist King After a Blank 2016

After drawing a blank in his last four appearances for Arsenal, the German has now been overtaken, while Tottenham fans may be surprised to see Roberto Soldado in the top 10

Thought Mesut Ozil was Europe’s assist king? Think again! After four straight blanks in the Premier League, the Arsenal star has been dethroned at the top of the creator charts.

The Germany international made a stunning start to the campaign, racking up 16 assists by Christmas and looked certain to break Thierry Henry’s long-standing record.

While Ozil still very much has his sights trained on Henry, he has nevertheless been toppled at the summit of the European assist rankings this term after failing to setup a single goal since the turn of the year.

Instead, it is now Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan who leads the way with the most assists of any player in Europe’s top five leagues, having collected 17 in all competitions this season according to Opta.

Admittedly, the Armenian only has nine league assists compared to Ozil’s 16, but he has been prolific in Dortmund’s cup competitions while the German has yet to create a goal outside the Premier League this season.

Mkhitaryan has assisted six times in the Europa League (including qualifiers) and twice more in the DFB-Pokal, with his most recent assist coming in the 3-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

After helping Barcelona run riot against Gary Neville’s Valencia, Neymar is now tied with Ozil on 16 assists, making him the most creative member of the fabled MSN attack.

Any further competition for the European assist crown is likely to come from Angel Di Maria, currently tied in  fourth place with 12 assists, with Kevin De Bruyne’s contribution likely to stall following his injury setback.

Meanwhile, Tottenham fans may be surprised to see a familiar name sneak into the top 10, with Roberto Soldado tied with Cristiano Ronaldo and Douglas Costa with 10 assists this season.

‘Valencia Dressing Room Is In The Sh*t’ – Mustafi Apologises For Barcelona Drubbing

The defender revealed the mood in the dressing room after Gary Neville’s side suffered a 7-0 trouncing in the Copa del Rey at the hands of the world and European champions

Shkodran Mustafi admitted the mood in the Valencia team is horrible as he apologised to supporters after his side suffered a heavy 7-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Luis Suarez scored four goals and Lionel Messi netted a hat-trick as Barca gained the advantage in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.

Los Che are winless in La Liga under Gary Neville and the coach has refused to resign in the wake of the trouncing, despite calls for him to do so and apologise.

Mustafi was sent off just before half-time with Barca already leading 3-0, and the Germany international refrained from blaming himself, insisting the players must show a reaction.

“We want to say sorry to the supporters and to the people who are working for the club,” he told reporters.

“But you can’t ask for forgiveness without giving a reaction. It’s not the time to talk about other sides.

“We have to lift ourselves up and that is not easy. In the coming days we have to front everything like men.

“I do not look at who made the errors. In the good and bad moments we are together as one.

“The dressing room is in the s**t at the moment, but I believe in this team, and that is why I signed for this club. We were a team last year, and we are this year.

“For many people this has been the worst game of their career.

“We need to lift our heads like men and grow. The dressing room has to lift. The return leg is not to overcome the score, but to ask for forgiveness.”

Manuel Pellegrini To Chelsea: ‘Chilean On Blues Managerial Wishlist This Summer’

Outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is likely to be linked with the Chelsea post in the coming weeks as the Blues search for a long-term successor to José Mourinho.

The Portuguese was sacked in December after a disastrous Premier League title defence saw Chelsea languish closer to a relegation struggle than the title race. Guus Hiddink is currently interim manager but the Dutchman has expressed little desire to take the position beyond the end of the current campaign.

Pellegrini can boast the third best win ratio in the Premier League era – behind just Mourinho and former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson – and offers clubs a brand of off-field tranquillity of which Mourinho is often incapable.

The Express speculate the Blues are considering an intriguing swoop for one of football’s elder statesmen next summer if a move for first-choice target Antonio Conte, the Italy manager, fails to materialise. 63-year-old Pellegrini is thought to be reluctant to retire when he leaves the Etihad this season and may be inclined to rival his former employers for honours in England.

Conte is preparing to lead the Italian national side to the European Championship in France this summer with bookies placing them as sixth-favourites at this early stage.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has revealed he will try to tempt out-of-contract captain John Terry into signing at Selhurst Park.

The 35-year-old announced following the 5-1 victory against MK Dons in the FA Cup fourth round that Chelsea have notified him they will not offer him a new contract.

Speaking ahead of his side’s encounter with Bournemouth on Tuesday night, Pardew said he has failed to lure the former England skipper to join him on several occasions.

“He always sniggers at the suggestion. Of course I will ask one more time. I’m sure I’ll bump into him again and ask the question.”

Terry joined the Blues at the age of 14 and played 696 games for the club along the way to lifting four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League with the Blues. He says he will look abroad for new employers, however, out of loyalty to Chelsea.

Jackson Martinez Joins Guangzhou Evergrande

The Colombian has become the most expensive signing in Chinese football history, with super-agent Jorge Mendes brokering a deal that sees Atletico Madrid make a €7m profit

Guangzhou Evergrande have officially completed the signing of striker Jackson Martinez fromAtletico Madrid for a Chinese record €42 million (£31.8m).

The deal smashes the previous £21m record Jiangsu Suning paid Chelsea for midfielder Ramires, a benchmark that did not even last a full week as the Chinese Super League’s immense recruitment drive continues.

Clubs in the top two tiers of Chinese football spent more than €200m collectively during January, with Martinez and Ramires also joined by the likes of Gervinho and Fredy Guarin in moving to the increasingly star-studded league.

Martinez moves to China on a four-year deal after successfully completing a medical and agreeing terms late on Tuesday and flies directly to Dubai to link up with his new team-mates on their winter training camp.

The Colombia international will now be managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari and will link up with fellow South Americans such as Paulinho and Ricardo Goulart.

The 27-year-old only joined Atletico in the summer, struggling to make an impact at the club following his €35m move from Porto amid rumours of a falling out with fiery coach Diego Simeone.

Credit: Guangzhou Evergrande

Incredibly, that means Atleti have actually made a €7m profit (£5.3m) on a player that scored just two goals in 15 uninspiring La Liga appearances, as well as netting a solitary goal in the Champions League.

Infamous super-agent Jorge Mendes, most closely associated with Cristiano Ronaldo, helped broker a deal that sees Martinez become the most expensive transfer of 2016 so far, and the biggest signing in Chinese football history.

Although Martinez struggled at Atletico, he had an impeccable record at former club Porto; the Colombian bagged at least 20 league goals in each of his three campaigns in Portugal, racking up 92 goals in 132 appearances in all competitions.

Van Gaal Welcomes Guardiola Arrival

The Manchester United boss is looking forward to renewing acquaintances with the Spaniard, who he worked with during his time in charge of Barcelona

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has welcomed Manchester City’s appointment of Pep Guardiola.

Van Gaal was Guardiola’s manager during their time together at Barcelona and made the former midfielder his captain at Camp Nou.

The Spaniard has since followed his old boss into management and enjoyed great success during his time in charge of both Barca and Bayern Munich.

His next challenge will see him replace Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium next summer, where he will immediately become a rival of Van Gaal, though the Dutchman says he will be happy to see him.

He said: “He is my former captain so I am very pleased to see him. And I can speak Spanish so it is very convenient for me!”

Van Gaal was talking after United’s 3-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday night, which came courtesy of goals from Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.

‘Terry Could Still Earn A New Deal’ – Chelsea

The Blues captain announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the current campaign but the Premier League champions have issued a response

Chelsea have hinted that captain John Terry could yet be offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge, despite the defender confirming that he will be leaving the club when his current contract expires at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Following Chelsea’s 5-1 FA Cup win over MK Dons on Sunday, the club captain told reporters that he had been made aware that his deal at Stamford Bridge would not be renewed and indicated that he would look to continue playing outside of the Premier League.

But following Terry’s revelation, Chelsea have issued a statement hinting that the door may still be open for the 35-year-old to sign a new deal at the club.

“He is a fantastic servant of Chelsea Football Club and a superb captain and, as such, the club will keep the channels of dialogue open,” the statement read.

“While no new deal currently on the table, that situation could change in the coming months.”

In an emotional admission following the MK Dons game, Terry had admitted that the situation around his contract could change, should a new manager come into the club and want the 35-year-old to stay on.

“They said that when the new manager comes in, things might change. It’s a no at the minute,” Terry said.

“Unfortunately it was a no. It’s not going to be a fairytale ending, I’m not going to retire at Chelsea.”

Ramos: Neymar to Real Madrid? Football Is Unpredictable

The defender has admitted he wouldn’t be surprised to see the forward move to the Bernabeu in the future but ruled out ever joining Barcelona

Sergio Ramos has admitted “football is unpredictable” after being asked if he thought Neymar would ever join Real Madrid.

The former Santos man was reported to have met with a Madrid delegation ahead of the Fifa Ballon d’Or gala in Zurich.

The 23-year-old quickly denied such a meeting ever took place, while Barcelona coach Luis Enrique revealed last week that he expects Neymar to sign a new contract sooner rather than later.

That has not stopped Ramos from hailing the Brazil captain’s talents, however.

“Neymar is a great player who can make the difference,” the defender told reporters.

“Football is unpredictable and there will always be transfer rumours.

“But the one thing you will never see is Sergio Ramos joining Barcelona.”

Madrid supposedly see Neymar as the long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been linked with Manchester United, PSG and a move to MLS in recent months.

However, Ramos is keen for the Portugal international to stay at the Bernabeu for many more years to come.

“As Madrid captain, I would like to see Cristiano here for many more years,” he added. “He is a real star.”

Neymar Returns, But Arda Out For Barcelona-Athletic Copa Clash

Luis Enrique’s side take a 2-1 lead into the second leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-final against and are boosted by the Brazilian’s return.

Neymar is set to return to action for Barcelona in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final clash against Athletic Bilbao.

The Brazil captain sat out Barca’s 2-1 Liga victory at Malaga on Saturday with a hamstring injury but has been named in Luis Enrique’s 18-man matchday squad alongside fellow forward Luis Suarez, who has completed a two-match Copa del Rey suspension.

Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta have recovered from a bout of flu, but fellow midfielder Arda Turan is still laid low and will miss the match.

Holders Barcelona take a 2-1 aggregate advantage into the Camp Nou encounter against last season’s beaten finalists following last week’s first leg.

Munir and Neymar scored first-half goals before prolific striker Aritz Aduriz struck a minute from time to give Athletic hope.

NFF Apologises to Nigerians over Super Eagles’s Failure at African Nations Championship

The Nigeria Football Federation has apologized to the Federal Government and the good people of Nigeria for the Super Eagles’s failure at the 4th African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

Leading the Group C table before kick –off of the final matches on Tuesday, the Super Eagles failed to fly in a 0-1 defeat by Guinea in Rubavu that eliminated Nigeria from the continental houseparty in Rwanda.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick reiterated that the African Nations Championship is “both developmental and preparatory for bigger challenges,” and said without mincing words that the Federation would now shift focus to the qualification race for the bigger Africa Cup of Nations.

“We apologise to Nigerians for the poor outing of the Super Eagles in Rwanda, but we toe the line of CAF which states that CHAN is a developmental and preparatory competition. Of course, as Nigerians, we love to win always, and we feel bad when we don’t.

I want us to take the positives from this tournament. A player like Chisom Chikatara broke onto the global platform and players like Usman Mohammed, Chima Akas, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Austin Oboroakpo and Ifeanyi Mathew confirmed their class.

“For me, it is disappointing that we did not progress. But the NFF will now focus on the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, and start preparations early for the remaining rounds,” Pinnick said.

The Super Eagles have a quick, top-of-the-table double –take against Pharaohs of Egypt in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying race, with the first leg in Nigeria on March 23 and the return leg in Egypt five days later.

In June, the Super Eagles take on Chad in N’Djamena before hosting Tanzania in the final round of matches in September.

Bale’s Agent Slams ‘Disgraceful’ Transfer Leak And Demands Investigation

Details of the Welshman’s transfer from Tottenham have been revealed, detailing that he cost more than Cristiano Ronaldo

Gareth Bale‘s agent Jonathan Barnett has described the leaked details of the Welshman’s transfer to Real Madrid as “disgraceful” and demanded an investigation.

Website Football Leaks published documents detailing the star’s transfer in 2013 which state the world-record figure paid by Madrid to Tottenham.

It is claimed the Santiago Bernabeu club parted with €100,759,418 for Bale – more than the €94m fee paid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 – despite their previous insistence that Bale’s deal cost closer to €91.59m.

Reports in Spain also suggest Tottenham were forbidden from disclosing details of the transfer fee, which is understood to have been paid in four installments.

Barnett is furious at the leak and has called for apologies from the Football Association, telling Telegraph Sport: “There should be an inquiry and an independent investigation because it’s outrageous.

“There also needs to be an apology from the Football Association to the clubs and the player.

“I think it’s disgraceful that people can get hold of this sort of stuff. It shows complete disregard for both clubs and the player.”

A British journalist claimed this month that Madrid had instructed him not to mention Bale’s world-record fee during an interview with the 26-year-old.

“Real Madrid are a club so worried about image that when I interviewed Bale it was requested to me, ‘don’t put in the article how much Gareth Bale cost’,” Jonathan Norcroft of The Sunday Times told the BBC.

“The reason for that is because it was a world-record transfer fee, but Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t like to see that someone else cost more than him.”

Victor Valdes Announces Man Utd Departure

The Spanish keeper looks set to end his Premier League nightmare after a rocky year at Old Trafford, with a loan move to Belgian side Standard Liege widely expected

Victor Valdes has announced his imminent departure from Manchester United via Instagram.

Valdes had been linked with a loan move to Belgian side Standard Liege, with reports suggesting Man Utd would help supplement the Spaniard’s wages.

The 34-year-old has endured a rocky time at Old Trafford, with boss Louis van Gaal leaving the shot-stopper out of his squad following a refusal to represent the Red Devils’ U21 side.

Valdes has been told that he has no future in Manchester under Van Gaal’s reign, though now looks set end his nightmare with the club and continue his career elsewhere.

The former Barcelona keeper took to social media to post a message that reads: “Thank you all for your support during these months of hard work for me, I will never forget! See you soon!”

Turan: Barcelona Team-Mates Are Scared Of Me!

The winger says his new team-mates are wary of his temper after he threw a boot at a linesman during a clash against the Catalans while a Atletico Madrid player.

New signings are often the subject of practical jokes inside football dressing rooms, but Arda Turan has revealed his Barcelona team-mates daren’t cross him in fear of his temper.

The winger threw a boot at a linesman during Atletico Madrid’s clash with Barcelona in January last year, before swapping the Vicente Calderon for Camp Nou in the summer.

Arda Turan – who only made his Barca debut at the start of this month after the club’s transfer ban came to an end – has joked he now has a reputation inside the dressing room.

You could say his team-mates don’t want to put their foot in it…

Real Madrid Deny All Charges And Will Appeal Fifa’s Transfer Ban Decision

Real Madrid have confirmed that they will appeal Fifa’s decision to hand them a transfer ban for the next two transfer windows, insisting they have done nothing wrong.

Both los Blancos and city rivals Atletico were handed the sanctions for irregularities regarding the transfer of players under the age of 18, but Real have outlined the steps taken to ensure they followed the appropriate procedures in a new statement.

Atletico have also confirmed that they will appeal the ban, though both teams are free to continue signing players in the current January window.

“Consequently, Real Madrid will appeal this decision by Fifa using all sporting bodies, considering it absolutely unacceptable,” concluded Madrid’s length statement released on Thursday afternoon.

Arsenal Paid Price For Stadium – Toure

The former Gunners defender believes the club’s move from Highbury to the Emirates in 2006 cost them several Premier League titles

Former Arsenal defender Kolo Toure says the club’s Emirates stadium is the reason behind their 10-year wait for a Premier League title.

The Gunners played at Highbury before electing to build a new 60,000-capacity ground, which they moved into in 2006.

Arsenal’s last league title came in 2003-04, when the club went unbeaten for the whole season – and they have only won four trophies since.

But Toure has heaped praise on manager Arsene Wenger for his efforts since then, after the club forced to drastically reduce costs for several years to help balance the books.

“I am not inside any more but there has been a lot of change. A lot of players left the club, guys like Patrick Vieira, leaders left the club and it was quite difficult, but this policy started when they started the new stadium,” the Liverpool defender

“Everything changed. They needed to sell some players, cut the wage bill and that is all about it.

“I think they lost so many experienced players. Patrick Vieira was a leader, Robert Pires was a top player, Thierry Henry left and sometimes you need experience at the club and then a young player can learn, that is one of the things.”

He added: “Wenger is a top manager, he has shown that unbelievably. The thing I like is this manager can make an average player one of the best players in the world.

“He did that with so many players – [George] Weah… Vieira was in Milan not playing a lot… Thierry Henry was at Juventus and he made him one of the best ever.

“He did that with me because I started from nowhere. He took me to the next level and I always respect him for that.”

Arsenal are top of the Premier League ahead of Wednesday’s clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

‘De Bruyne Agreed Bayern Munich Move Before Manchester City Transfer’- Agent

The Belgian’s agent admits only the German champions’ refusal to meet Wolfsburg’s asking price stopped the midfielder from remaining in the Bundesliga

Kevin De Bruyne had agreed a deal to join Bayern Munich before ending up a Manchester City, according to the midfielder’s agent.

The Belgium international joined City at the end of August in a club-record move that cost upwards of £55 million, including add-ons.

But now De Bruyne’s representative, Patrick De Koster, reveals that the 24-year-old would have ended up at Pep Guardiola’s side if the German champions had paid the asking price.

“Kevin’s heart was beating for the Bundesliga, where he broke through at Bremen and became a star at Wolfsburg,” De Koster told Sport / Foot Magazine.

“I’m convinced he would have played for Bayern if they had been able to pay the asking price.

“We reached a personal agreement with Bayern after two meetings. The deal has collapsed on the asking price.

“I think that Bayern wanted to pay €50 million, but no more. In the end City won the race and Kevin is super happy with his move. He adapted fast on and off the pitch.”

FC Barcelona Register 77 Players As Transfer Ban Ends

Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal are now eligible to make their belated Blaugrana debuts but the Catalans have also strengthened across all categories and age groups

Barcelona have registered a whopping 77 players following the expiration of the Liga side’s 14-month transfer ban.

The Catalans were sanctioned by Fifa for breaching rules regarding the acquisition and movement of players under the age of 18.

However, while Barca were prevented from registering new arrivals for the past two transfer windows, they were not blocked from doing deals.

Indeed, both Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal were signed last summer, from Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, respectively, and the pair are now eligible to make their belated Blaugrana debuts.

Barca have already lifted the Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup this season and will now hope to retain their Champions League, Liga and Copa del Rey titles in 2016.

However, as well as strengthening Luis Enrique’s first-team squad, last season’s treble winners have also snapped up another 75 players across all categories and age groups, with the club’s ‘B’ team bolstered by six new arrivals alone: Jokin Ezkieta, Moi Delgado, Chemi, Robert Goncalves and Dani Romera.

“I Won’t Coach When I Retire, I Want To Live Like A King” – C. Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo says he has no desire to go into coaching when he retires from active football like former teammates Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs. The 30 year old Real Madrid and Portugal star player says he has much more interests outside of football and does not foresee a coaching, management or presidential role when he hangs up his boots.

”There is another life after football,” he said in an interview with El Mundo’s Papel. ”I think at first it will cost a bit, but if you ask me now if I want to coach, I say no. Neither a club manager or president. You can say you have the best job, money, cars, houses..But that is not everything. An example, on Saturday there is a boxing match in Las Vegas and I would like to take my family and friends but I cannot because I have no time. But after (football) I want to live like a king.”

Ronaldo is Real Madrid’s all time record highest goalscorer and won a third Ballon D’or last year.

Messi Out Of Club World Cup Semi-final

The Blaugrana forward is last-minute absentee for the match with Guangzhou Evergrande after coming down with an injury

Lionel Messi has been ruled out of Barcelona‘s Club World Cup semi-final as a result of renal colic, the club have confirmed.

The Argentina international had been training as normal in Japan and was expected to line up from the start against Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao in Yokohama.

The European champions stated earlier on Thursday that Messi is suffering from renal colic and will therefore sit out the game, while his involvement in the final or third-place play-off will be determined by his recovery.

Barca are already likely to be without Neymar against Guanzghou, with the Brazil star still short of full fitness despite returning to training this week following a groin injury.

The former Santos forward posted a picture from training with the caption “I’m back” but head coach Luis Enrique has already warned he will not take any unecessary risks over his fitness.

EPL: The Top Four Is Gone, Says Mourinho

Jose Mourinho conceded Chelsea have no chance of finishing in the Premier League’s top four after Monday’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester left them languishing just outside the relegation zone.

Mourinho’s side are 14 points behind fourth placed Manchester United with 22 matches remaining and even the Blues boss has given up on the crisis-torn champions’ hopes of making up that gap.

Goals from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez condemned Chelsea to their ninth defeat in 16 league games and they are now just one point above the bottom three.

“The top four is gone, clearly,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

mourinho

“I don’t accept we are in a relegation battle.

“You look at the table and we are there but you think you are in a relegation battle if you think you are there for three or four months. I don’t think that.”

Chelsea’s latest flop in a dismal season left Mourinho admitting he was growing increasingly frustrated by an astonishing slump that could lead to his sacking.

“When some of your players don’t hit the levels they are capable of it is hard to see,” he said.

“This season we are doing so bad for some reason, although not all of them.

“We were the best team for 20 or 25 minutes, maybe for a maximum of 30 minutes. Then Leicester were the best team for an hour.”

Already beset by reports that he is close to being axed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, Mourinho hoped he had bought himself some breathing space after leading his side into the Champions League knockout stages last week.

But the loss to Claudio Ranieri’s surprise leaders will turn the heat back up on Mourinho and he responded by vowing to work even harder on the training ground.

“To turn things around, I know only one way: working at the top level,” he added.

“Day by day in training I have no complaints with them. But is it frustrating to see what they are doing in training and what they do in matches, then clearly yes.”

Manchester United Going Backwards Under Van Gaal, Says Ferdinand

The former defender says the next six months are crucial and finishing outside the top four may mean the club miss out on Pep Guardiola or Carlo Ancelotti

Manchester United players are too afraid to express themselves and are going backwards under manager Louis van Gaal, according to former defender Rio Ferdinand.

Van Gaal has been criticised for his defensive style of play but the under-pressure Dutchman has showed no signs of swaying from his rigid approach despite the club’s five-match winless run.

United lost 2-1 at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, adding to their Champions League group-stage exit midweek.

And Ferdinand said something has to change, sooner rather than later, with United fourth in the standings, four points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

“Players are playing it safe because they are afraid of the consequences if they try to take chances,” Ferdinand told The Sun.

“Manchester United are going backwards again and I don’t see that changing because the manager will not change.

“They have to be allowed to express themselves.”

Van Gaal is under contract until 2017 but faces an uncertain future amid increasing fan frustration.

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola and former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Ferdinand added: “Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti will be available this summer and the question is will they be able to do a better job than Van Gaal?

“The board and owners might want to be loyal to Van Gaal after investing so much in him but they also have to do what is best for United.

“And if United finish outside the top four, that will be catastrophic.

“It might rule out the chance of getting either Guardiola or Ancelotti.

‘Fake’ Mourinho Is Finished As A Coach – Adrian Mutu

The Romanian, who was sacked by Chelsea for testing positive for cocaine in 2004, accused the Blues boss of only knowing of negative ways to draw a reaction from players

Jose Mourinho is “fake” and “finished” as a coach, according to former Chelsea player Adrian Mutu.

The Romanian, who currently plays for Pune City in the Indian Super League, endured a difficult relationship with Mourinho during their brief spell together at Stamford Bridge in 2004 which culminated in Mutu being sacked after testing positive for cocaine.

The 36-year-old accused the Chelsea manager of lacking man management skills and taking a negative approach to drawing a reaction from his players during periods of poor form.

“He has been a great coach in the past but, as a person, he is fake,” Mutu told the Mirror .

“He only looks after himself, and has no consideration for how his players are feeling and thinking. You could not go and talk to him

“As a coach, he is finished. There is no way back for him. How do you come back from something like this [current form]?

“You can see now how many of his players look unhappy. Why? He is the reason. He cannot talk to players like they should be spoken to.

“The first thing he does is he goes to the biggest player in his team, and tries to make him angry.

“No matter who it was, John Terry, Frank Lampard, it is just what he does for fun. That was just his way of doing things, and he won’t change .

Gary Neville Opens Doors To Valencia Fans On First Day

New Valencia coach Gary Neville has taken a step towards endearing himself to the club’s fans by allowing supporters to watch his first full training session in charge on Monday. Neville was appointed on Wednesday, but watched on from the stands at the weekend as Valencia salvaged a 1-1 draw against European champions Barcelona under the caretaker charge of Voro and Gary’s brother Phil Neville.

Open training sessions which the fans can attend are a long-running tradition in Spanish football, but many clubs have scaled back the practice in recent seasons seeking greater privacy to prepare for games. Indeed, Valencia hadn’t had an open training session for nearly a year and the news was warmly welcomed by fans on social media.

Neville’s first game in charge is on Wednesday as Valencia look to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in three years. The Spanish side need to beat Lyon at home and hope Belgian champions Gent fail to beat the already qualified Zenit St Petersburg.

News Alert!! Real Madrid Expelled From Copa Del Rey

Real Madrid have been expelled from the Copa del Rey after the suspended Denis Cheryshev was selected to take on Cadiz.

The winger opened the scoring on Wednesday night but it soon materialized he should have sat out the clash after picking up a ban in the competition while playing for Villarreal last term.

Van Gaal: Man Utd Need Signings – But It won’t Be Easy!

The Red Devils have been widely criticised for their style of play this season, and the Dutchman says that they will look to strengthen their squad in the “difficult” window

Louis van Gaal wants to add to his Manchester United squad in the upcoming transfer window but says January is a “more difficult” market than the summer.

United sit third in the Premier League table ahead of Saturday’s home game against West Ham but, despite being just one point adrift of leaders Manchester City, Van Gaal has faced criticism for his side’s functional and often underwhelming recent performances.

The club have scored just seven goals in their last nine matches in all competitions and are suffering with a raft of injury problems, leading to speculation that Van Gaal may attempt to bring in more firepower when the transfer window reopens next month.

However, speaking at his pre-West Ham media conference on Friday, Van Gaal sounded a warning about his chances of strengthening the squad before the end of the season.

“They are always contact injuries and you cannot afford that. We have a lot of contact injuries and also long-lasting injuries so that’s our problem,” the Dutchman explained.

“So we are looking [at players for January] but as you know it is not so easy to buy players and in January it is more difficult. We are looking but it is not for sure.”

Van Gaal also revealed that captain Wayne Rooney is out of Saturday’s match and may miss next week’s crucial Champions League trip to Wolfsburg due to a “nasty” ankle injury, while defender Marcos Rojo is facing a spell on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulder in training.

Rooney To Miss West Ham Game With ‘Nasty’ Injury

The Manchester United captain was taken off in their previous match against Leicester City and manager Louis van Gaal reveals that the problem was more serious than first thought

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will miss the Red Devils’ game against West Ham due to a “nasty” ankle injury.

The England captain was forced off during Saturday’s match against Leicester City and Van Gaal says that the problem is worse than originally thought, meaning he is likely to miss their Champions League match with Wolfsburg.

“The injury of Wayne Rooney is more heavy than we thought,” he told MUTV.

“It’s a nasty injury. When we go on, it’s been getting worse. We have to let him train to make the ankle stronger; that’s very important. I cannot say [for how long he will be out] because the doctor shall decide that with Wayne, of course. He is training well in the rehabilitation.”

When asked in his subsequent media conference if Rooney is out of Tuesday’s crucial clash against Wolfsburg, Van Gaal replied: “Yes, I think so.”

The United boss also explained that defender Marcos Rojo is out of the match after injuring his shoulder in training, while Ander Herrera and Phil Jones remain sidelined.

Young forward Jesse Lingard, however, is fit to return to the side as he seeks to make his 10th appearance of what is becoming a breakthrough season at Old Trafford.

“It’s [Rojo’s] shoulder, the same as last year, in a training session. It’s very unfortunate, also in the positon of Luke Shaw so I have a great problem,” Van Gaal continued. “Lingard is coming back, which is good. Jones is still injured so we have six injuries.”

With absentees piling up, the Dutchman admits that he has been resting his players a lot in order to keep them fresh ahead of the busy Christmas period.

“The week after next, we have two weeks that we can have more recovery,” he noted. “I have already given the players two days off this week.

“I’m giving them a lot of rest because I think it’s necessary. Nevertheless, we have six injuries, most of which are contact injuries. You cannot avoid those because football is a sport with direct resistance. We are unlucky, I have to say.”

Ronaldo Doesn’t Deserve To Be A Ballon d’Or Finalist – Dani Alves

The Portuguese has been named among the finalists to win the award, along with Lionel Messi and Neymar, but the Barca star has now criticised his Real Madrid rival

Barcelona right-back Dani Alves insists Cristiano Ronaldo does not deserve to be a Ballon d’Or finalist, and says Neymar has become the second best player in the world behind Lionel Messi.

Both Messi and Neymar have been named among the finalists to win the award, along with the Real Madrid superstar, who has scored 16 goals in 18 appearances thus far this season.

Alves, though, does not think Ronaldo should not still be in the running.

“Messi is a bit ahead, because of his influence on the game,” Alves told reporters. “I think at this moment, Neymar is second best in the world.

“Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t deserve to be among the Ballon d’Or finalists. It’s not only about scoring goals.”

President Demands Penalty Shootout For A Football Game After Watching It For Just 65 Minutes

Abdul Aziz decided he’d seen enough of the Super Cup match between Tafarrogh Zeina and Laskr and requested that the game be settled by a penalty shootout

We’ve all been there. Your team is heading for an inevitable stalemate but you’re obligated stick it out watch the full 90 minutes of drudgery unfold before your weary eyes… that is unless you’re the President of Mauritania.

Having seen 65 minutes of the Super Cup between Tafarrogh Zeina and Laksr, Mohamed Abdul Aziz, who only arrived at half-time, decided he’d seen enough and requested that the game, which was locked at 1-1, end there and then and be decided by a penalty shootout on account of his “busy” schedule.

Under significant pressure the match officials ceded to the President’s demands with Zeina Tafarrogh eventually winning the shootout, claiming glory and afterwards receiving the trophy from Abdul Aziz whose unique take on the laws of the game, if anything, is to be admired.

After the match the President said: “Finishing the game early did not break any laws – this game was a single entity and not related to any other competition. Football is famous for its flexibility, especially when all parties agree.”

‘Something Is Wrong Between Lewandowski And Robben’ – Matthaus

Reports have claimed the Poland international accused the winger of being selfish during the 4-0 win over Stuttgart

Former Bayern Munich star Lothar Matthaus believes there is a problem brewing between Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben.

Reports have claimed the Poland international was furious with Robben for shooting rather than passing to him several times during the 4-0 win over Stuttgart on November 7.

Robben has since dismissed suggestions his relationship with Lewandowski has turned sour, while coach Pep Guardiola was quick to defend the winger, stressing he does not want him to change his style of play.

Nevertheless, Matthaus is not convinced the situation has been resolved entirely.

“I see a potential source of unrest in attack,” Matthaus wrote in his column for Sport Bild.

“Lewandowski continues to fuel the ongoing discussion about Robben’s selfish attitude and that is rubbing off on the Dutchman, hurting his confidence.

“You can just see that there is something wrong between Lewandowski and Robben.

“The two of them should go out for a beer to iron things out. And Robben should pay for it…”

Cocu: I Hope Man Utd Fans Don’t Boo Moreno

The Mexican defender is expected to be targeted by the home fans after he injured Luke Shaw in their last encounter but the PSV coach hopes that is not the case

PSV coach Philip Cocu is hopeful Manchester United supporters will be forgiving of Hector Moreno, who inflicted a broken leg on Luke Shaw in September.

Cocu’s PSV make the trip to Manchester for their Champions League Group B clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday, with United full-back Shaw a notable absentee.

Shaw suffered a horrific double fracture in his right leg following a robust challenge from Moreno in the 2-1 reverse loss in Eindhoven two months ago.

Moreno and Cocu visited Shaw in hospital after the incident and the travelling PSV fans will unveil a “get well soon” banner for the England international at the stadium.

Speaking ahead of the game, Cocu was asked if he thought Moreno would be targeted by United fans and the Dutchman replied: “I hope not.

“It was a very bad injury. Hopefully Luke Shaw will get back soon.

“He is a fantastic player. The most important thing will be that he is back on his feet shortly, joining the team and playing for Manchester United, but we don’t know what will happen tomorrow in the game.”

United top the group on seven points from four matches, one clear of PSV and Wolfsburg.

Westerhof Blasts Oliseh, Says He Can’t Take Nigeria To The 2018 World Cup

Former Nigeria head coach Clemens Westerhof has said Sunday Oliseh can’t take the national team to the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
Westerhof, who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations title with the Super Eagles in Tunisia, made his stance known after Nigeria beat Swaziland 2-0 on Friday.
Following the victory, Oliseh told the press he was proud of his team, and Westerhof said it was nothing to celebrate.

“Congratulations, you beat Swaziland 2-0 in the return leg match of the preliminary round of the qualifiers,” But does that really call for celebration? Yes, there are no minnows in football but who are Swaziland to hold the Super Eagles to a goalless draw?T
he Super Eagles won 2-0 in Nigeria but is it not a game the Super Eagles should be winning 6-0, 7-0 under normal circumstances? What type of football do they play in Swaziland?
“Swaziland is not the first match Super Eagles have played under Oliseh. There has not been any difference between their first game under him and the game with Swaziland.I’m sorry, with Oliseh, the Super Eagles may not go to the World Cup in Russia,” Westerhof declared.

Arsene Wenger: Paris Attacks Hurt Laurent Koscielny Deeply – I Didn’t Recognise Him Against England

Arsene Wenger admits he may have to leave Laurent Koscielny out of the Arsenal side for Saturday’s trip to West Brom as he fears the defender has not recovered from the trauma of the Paris terror attacks.

The Gunners boss, who was in Paris on Friday when at least 129 people were killed, said Koscielny was ‘deeply affected’ by the atrocities and was unrecognisable during France’s 2-0 defeat by England on an emotional Tuesday night at Wembley.

And Wenger will consult the central defender to decide whether he is 100 per cent focused on football before deciding whether he can play at the Hawthorns.

Koscielny played in Friday’s friendly against Germany which was targeted by suicide bombers before both squads spent the night inside the Stade de France because of ongoing security concerns.

In pictures – The build-up to England vs France:

Asked about the difficulty of players focusing on football, Wenger said: “I think Koscielny is a good example because he had a fantastic game against Germany. And you could see that on Tuesday night he was not himself.

“It affected him deeply and I didn’t recognise the player I saw on Friday night on Tuesday night.

“I will talk with him. It’s a big game for us on Saturday, so I will talk to him to see if he is completely recovered and focused.

“You have to trust the player in these situations. Today in the Premier League you don’t get away with it with 80 per cent focus. You have to be completely committed.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud also played against Germany and came on as a substitute at Wembley.

And Wenger said: “They both will need to show resilience and desire to play. I will look how deeply they are affected.

“Sometimes it hits you more two or three days later than on the night. On the night you protect yourself or not know what’s going on. But slowly you realise the shock is always a bit after. They have gone through that game but I will talk to them to see how much they are up for it.”

Wenger had been due to attend Friday’s match at the Stade de France but watched the game from a nearby hotel and was shocked by news of the terrorists’ attacks.

He said: “I was not at the game but I was not far from the event and I think everybody who was in Paris on Friday night was in shock. The whole city was shocked.

“France is, like England, a tolerant and generous country and to discover how much your own citizens hate you and hate the country is of course a huge shock for everybody. You wonder what is going on there. Why does this country get this kind of treatment?

“I believe at the moment nobody in France has found an answer or a real explanation for what’s going on and why, because what was targeted was the way of life, basically. Football, going out, listening to music. It’s more way of life that is targeted than any individual community.

“I was more under shock than fearful for my safety, but you could be scared of what was going on because it was four different places attacked in the centre of Paris so you don’t feel secure anywhere.

“I was late for an appointment, I was late to the stadium so I decided to watch the game in the hotel where I was. In the end in the hotel we were quite secure, but the streets were empty, completely empty.”

Despite the traumas of his own players, Wenger insists the French FA president Noel Le Graet was right to declare that the Wembley friendly should go ahead without consulting the players.

He said: “The French Federation decided to play the game. If you make a a vote of players, you might have half who wants to play and half who doesn’t want to play. What do you do then?

“At some stage we have to be responsible adults and show strength and not to lie down. You must stand up and in England you have a history of that, and I felt England have dealt always with the situation very well by saying, ‘Let’s get on with our lives and show we are strong’.”

Wenger praised the response of the FA and England fans during Tuesday’s tributes at Wembley.

He said: “I would like to thank the English community and English football who have shown great solidarity. Of course, it was a shock, a huge shock for our country and our football as well. The football world has responded the way you want it to respond in a big union and a big togetherness.

“You always think after this kind of event: do you continue or do you stop your life, to play? For me they made the right decision and I believe the event on Tuesday night has shown that it was the right decision.

“I think it was fantastic for France and it showed the class of England to see the arch of Wembley in French colours was something that had a strong significance for French people. England handled this situation with a lot of class.”

Wenger claimed that it was an ‘over-reaction’, albeit an understandable one, for Germany’s friendly with Holland to postponed after a security alert but believes it was the right decision for Belgium’s clash with Spain to have been called off as police were targeting Brussels as they hunted fugitive terrorists.

The Arsenal manager said: “I feel the danger in this kind of situation is to over-react a little bit. I think that’s what happened with Germany and Spain-Belgium I’m not sure, because in Belgium was a big centre of terrorists who live there. I think that was cautious. Germany maybe overreacted a little bit but you can understand that.

“You have a bit more of a question of security, because it looks like it’s not the end of it, in France especially.

“A way for us is just to get on with life and to respond in a positive way to the situation, because you cannot cannot stop just everything. We have to continue with our lives and try to get as well people to focus on something else.”

Security Concerns ‘Inevitable’ Ahead Of Clasico – Iniesta

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta admitted on Thursday it is impossible to ignore security concerns ahead of Saturday’s huge clash between Real Madrid and Barca in the Spanish capital just days after a series of deadly attacks in Paris.

The Spanish government have promised security measures on an unprecedented level for the match that will see a capacity 81,000 fans descend upon the Santiago Bernabeu with 2,400 police, stewards and emergency services set to form a triple ring of security around the stadium.

“The situation generates concern for everybody. It is inevitable, I think we all agree on that,” said Iniesta.

“From what I know and what the security forces are saying, all possible measures will be taken and everyone should collaborate so that before, during and after the game a sporting spectacle can take place and it is the game that is the focus for such a special day for the world of football.”

The Stade de France, where France were hosting Germany, was one of a number of targets struck during the attacks on Friday that left 129 dead and over 350 injured.

Iniesta was part of the Spain squad that travelled to Brussels for a friendly against Belgium on Tuesday only for the game to be suspended less than 24 hours before kick-off due to the elevated terror threat.

“Fear isn’t the right word, but there was concern,” Iniesta added.

“We went because it seemed like everything could take place normally despite the situation we were in before they took that decision. A completely correct decision.”

However, he wholeheartedly backed the decision for games across Spain and the rest of Europe to go ahead this weekend.

“It is a shame that people aren’t talking about sport, football or the spectacle, but it is the reality we live in and we can’t ignore it.

“We have to try to return to normality. On Saturday, it is not just Madrid and Barca that are playing, but many games and hopefully everything goes as it always has done.”

Suarez: “Real Madrid Players Will Not Target Messi’s Knee”

The Uruguay international striker has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season thus far and says that the Argentine will not be unfairly targeted by Real’s defenders

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez does not expect Real Madrid players to target Lionel Messi‘s knee in this weekend’s Clasico.

Messi has been out of action since injuring his knee against Las Palmas in September, but has returned to training ahead of Saturday’s clash at Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is also set to feature despite struggling with a shoulder problem, and Suarez says neither player will be subjected to rough treatment.

“I don’t think anybody will try to hit Sergio Ramos’ shoulder and I do not think anyone will try to hit Messi’s knee either,” Suarez said at a news conference on Wednesday.

“We are colleagues and professionals. Messi has been training with the squad, but it is up to the coach to decide whether he will play.”

Barcelona hold a three-point lead over Madrid at the top of La Liga heading into Saturday’s match, but Suarez does not feel this weekend’s game will be decisive in the title race.

“We have to be happy with our recent performances, because we have been doing a good job without the best player in the world, travelling to the Bernabeu three points clear of Madrid,” the in-form Uruguayan added.

“Games like the Clasico are the ones that are decided by great players, but it will not be decisive in the race for the Liga title.

“There are still a lot of games left and Atletico Madrid also have a role to play.”

Saturday’s match represents a special occasion for Suarez as he returns to the stadium where he made his debut for Barcelona last October.

He continued: “It is always a special feeling to play in a stadium like the Santiago Bernabeu. It is even more special because I made my debut for Barcelona at the Bernabeu.

“Madrid are Madrid. We know what we have to do and we must be very focused right from the start.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: “It Is Too Late For Premier League Move”

The striker has been linked with a move to England but says it’s unlikely he will play there at this stage of his career

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has all but ruled out a move to the Premier League at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old’s contract with PSG expires at the end of the season and he has yet to make a decision about his long-term future.

Ibrahimovic has been linked with a move to Manchester United, but a transfer to England now appears unlikely.

“I think it is too late to come to England,” the striker told Sportsmail. “I am very happy at PSG. I have six months to go on my contract and we will see what happens afterwards.

“I am enjoying it, I enjoy every day on the field. While I am playing at the top level I just want to enjoy it and do my thing. I do not know where I will finish my career, let’s wait and see.”

Ibrahimovic netted twice in Sweden’s 2-2 draw with Denmark on Tuesday to send his county through to Euro 2016 and he has admitted he will probably retire from international duty after the tournament in France.

“I am looking forward to the Euros,” he added. “It is probably going to be my last tournament with the national team and I am very excited because before these two play-off games there was all this kind of talk that we were not able to beat Denmark.

“Now we are very happy and I am satisfied. It will be magic for everyone.”

“I Play Like Cristiano Ronaldo” – Bebe

Rayo Vallecano attacker Bebe feels his playing style is similar to that of Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Former Manchester United attacker Bebe has likened his style to that of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, while also voicing his admiration for Didier Drogba.

Bebe has impressed this campaign at Rayo Vallecano after previous disappointing spells with United and Benfica and he believes his style of play is similar to that of his illustrious compatriot.

“My idols? Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo. I have the same way of running and the same shooting style as Cristiano,” Bebe told AS.

“He’s definitely one of my favourites.”

The 25-year-old failed to make the grade at United after joining from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2010, but he still has fond memories of his time at Old Trafford.

“It all happened very quickly, a total surprise. One day I’m training and the next they’re telling me that I’m going to sign a five-year contract with Manchester United. I thought it was a joke. I wasn’t there long, but I enjoyed it,” Bebe added.

“It was every kid’s dream, it was insane. I was playing with the best in the world. It wasn’t easy, the first week I had to take a deep breath, but I got used to it. I adapted and tried to fit in.

“Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney really impressed me. A few months earlier I was watching them on TV and suddenly here I was running, jumping and talking to them. Giggs really caught my attention, I saw how they loved him, always asking for autographs, pictures, jerseys.”

W/Cup Qualifier: Oliseh Surprised Me With Choice Of Players – Swaziland Coach

Swaziland’s national football team Coach, Harris Bulunga, said that Super Eagles’ Coach, Sunday Oliseh’s choice of players upset his game plan in a World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria.
Bulunga made the remark after the Super Eagles beat Swaziland 2-0 in the match played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Moses Simon scored Nigeria’s first goal in the 51st minute while Defender, Efe Ambrose, nodded in the second goal in the 84th minute.
According to Bulunga, we expected Oliseh to field Mikel Obi. We did not see him and it was a surprise to us.
“Sunday Oliseh surprised us with his tactics and choice of players. The Nigerian midfield was generally slow in the first leg in Swaziland.
“In today’s match, the Nigerian midfield was more mobile and fluid and they created more chances in the match’’, he said.
The Swazi coach said the Eagles midfield was more coordinated in the game today.’
He also tipped the Eagles to go places in the World Cup qualifying matches.
Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, said the Swazi’s did not come out to attack.
“We had to make changes during the break to open them and score’’, he said.

Samson Siasia’s Mother Kidnapped

The mother of current head coach of Nigeria’s U-23 football team, Samson Siasia has been kidnapped.

According to reports, gunmen stormed the family residence of the Siasia’s in the early hours of Tuesday morning at Odoni community of Sagama Local Council Area of Bayelsa State and forcefully whisked away Siasia’s mother on a motorcycle.

Bayelsa State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Ansinim Butswat, has confirmed the incident saying that the matter has been reported, but details were still sketchy.
Speaking to the media on the incident, a distraught Siasia has expressed his confusion at the occurrence of the event. Siasia said: “Right now I am confused, from the story I got, three men on motorbike stormed my parents’ house in my village Odoni in Bayelsa State, shot sporadically into the air before taking my old mother away on a bike.
“What do they expect from me? I don’t have money, I am right now on national duty, and need all the time to concentrate on this very important national task. So, I beg them to please release my mother so that I can concentrate on this task of qualifying the U-23 National Team for the men’s football event of the Rio Olympics.”
In a statement released on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) website, NFF president, Amaju Pinnick has appealed to the kidnappers to release the 72 year old mother of the coach. “This is quite disturbing. We are just preparing for a crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, and the U-23 boys are already in The Gambia for a pre-Cup of Nationstraining camp. Why this?
“All we can do is to appeal to the kidnappers to free Samson Siasia’s aged mother. Samson is on a critical national assignment presently and the last he needs is this kind of distraction,” Said Pinnick. As at the time of this report, it was revealed that the kidnappers are yet to demand ransom from the family.

Siasia, U-23 Team Escape Plane Crash In Ghana

Nigerian U-23 team and their coaches including Samson Siasia escaped a plane crash on their way to Gambia on Sunday morning when their plane developed technical faults mid-air forcing the crew to make an emergency landing in Ghana.

The team were on their way to Gambia where they are expected to hold a 10-day pre-Africa U-23 Cup of Nations camping. The tournament, an African qualifying championship for the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics, will hold in Senegal later this month.

Report on the website of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, says though the team had eventually landed at their destination Sunday evening, they experienced near-death situation before they could get to The Gambia.

It was gathered that the ARIK Air aircraft conveying the team from Lagos lost a tyre on landing at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra. The airplane that was on ground in Accra was then deployed for the purpose of flying the team to The Gambia, but that also lost an engine on take –off and the pilot had to make a quick return.

ARIK, however, provided another aircraft that flew the delegation to The Gambia through Dakar.

Meanwhile, Coach Siasia has wielded th?e big stick by dropping Kingsley Sokari, Nzube Anaezemba and Daniel Etor for what he termed indiscipline.

Siasia said the players were sent packing after they requested to leave the camp to go for their Club’s (Enyimba) last NPFL game of the season against Sunshine Stars in Lagos, even after he (Siasia) had told all the players they could not leave camp.

“I feel bad in taking this decision, but discipline must be maintained for us to achieve success in Senegal. All players in camp were told not to leave camp as the team would be traveling this weekend to The Gambia for pre-Championship training, only for these three players to come and ask to be allowed to go play for their club as they wanted to be part of the victory parade. I had no option but to allow them leave and also in the process, leave them out of the team.”

Siasia then wished them well in their pursuit of club glory, while urging them to wish the national team well.

Barcelona Or Real Madrid Wouldn’t Win The Premier League – Pique

The Catalan defender, who has played for Manchester United, believes it would be too tough for Spain’s biggest clubs to win the title in England

Barcelona would not win the Premier League if they were given the chance to compete in England’s top flight, according to the Catalan side’s defender Gerard Pique.

The 28-year-old, who played for Manchester United between 2004 and 2008, says that neither Barca nor Real Madrid would stand a chance in their first season because going to places like Stoke City is “really tough”.

Manchester City have been knocked out of the Champions League to Luis Enrique’s side for the last two seasons, while Madrid and Atletico have both accounted for Manchester United and Chelsea recently.

Pique, however, doesn’t believe dominance in Europe would be reflected if Spain’s biggest clubs tried their luck in the English league.

“I think that if Barcelona or Real Madrid goes to the Premier League then the first year of playing there, there is no chance of winning it,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

“I think [this] because if you go to Stoke, or other types of teams, then it will be really tough.”

The Spain international, who recaptured his best form last season as Barca won the treble, also feels that English teams would struggle if they had to make the move to the Mediterranean.

“It’s a debate – we could spend hours on it,” he continued.

“If Manchester United or Chelsea go to Spain then the same. No chance to win the league.”

Aderonke Bello: The Dominance Of The Igbo Tribe In Nigerian Football

Growing up in a family that loves football has shown me a lot about the great footballers we have ever had in Nigeria.
I recall the likes of Samuel Okwaraji, Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Christian Chukwu, Emeka Ezeugo, Mikel Obi, Onyekachi Apam, Uche Okechukwu, etc. All the above named great footballers are Igbo men, as most of the footballers of such calibre to have ever come out of Nigeria are from the tribe.
When observing trending issues on the social media sometime last week, I was privy to discussions and sometimes arguments by some stakeholders and learned people in sport about the fact that the Igbos are dominating the national teams, both male and female, while some accused the team handlers of partiality in their squad selections. Many insinuated that the guys are always the ones they called because they feel they are better talented in football. However, this does not exclude the female players.
Nigerians are interesting people in its entirety when it comes to tribal issues, truth be told, they dominated and are still dominating football in Nigeria. Kudos has to be given to them, worthy of acknowledgement.
Having said that, as a proud Yoruba woman, most of my friends are Igbos, so, no one should accuse me of tribalism or picking on this wonderful footballing tribe. They have collectively brought glory to our great nation Nigeria in so many ways. In recent times, the squad that won the 2013 African Cup of Nations was full of the Igbos, even the 2013 world cup winning U-17 squad. The upcoming dudes are Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidiebere Nwakali and many others, to name but two. Looking at the Nigerian Leagues across the Nation, on its own, most of the players plying their trade there are of the Igbo Tribe.
Moving out of the country right now, the statistics of the players in different leagues abroad in the Scandinavian countries, the middle belt, even in Yemen, are of the Igbo Tribe or descend. I feel they should be happy and proud of their inputs and contribution to local and global football while they rightfully enrich their pockets in return. Many of them have adopted other countries due to the lack of chance to feature for their Nation. They are of great determination, these folks represent us well with their sportsmanship.
I remember a super eagles player, Sunday Mba who scored the winning goal at 2013 AFCON, Mikel Obi, young Kenneth Omeruo was also superb with the strong input from the now retired Emmanuel Emenike.
Statistically, about 70% overall national participation goes to the Igbo guys while the remaining 30% is shared amongst other tribes. Critically speaking, some people from other tribes fade away so soon while the Igbo guys stand the test of time, and are more devoted to the game, conversely, have lengthy footballing careers, I wonder how they do it. What is their secret recipe?

Reasons behind their love for football are many and after a deep thought and questions raised, I realized that, this set of people like the game of football more than the rest of the tribes in the country, and also get more encouragement in doing so.
It can be attributed to a number of reasons, singularly or additionally; Physical prowess, as they’re genetically sturdier than the other tribes; Better encouraged by the number of successful Igbo players; Their enterprising nature afford them the ability to foresee the riches that may lie ahead despite the short-termism of the career; Its better embraced as a way out of poverty within the community; Simply better enjoyed in practice than the other tribes; Better scouting network within the tribe.
Meanwhile, you can hardly see a Hausa girl play football and also, only few Yoruba girls come out to play the round leather game, can we safely blame this on their religion and culture? Of course yes!
Some scouts will rather an Igbo footballer, because it is widely believed that they take football more seriously. Another thing that came to my mind is that the igbos are business oriented and one fast way to big money is through football. I really thank them for their efforts and I hope they keep contributing their skills to bringing glory to the Nation through football.

‘Arsenal Does Not Necessarily Need God To Win’ – Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in a bizarre interview with French magazine L’Equipe’s Sport spoke on a wide-range of topics including time, religion and more. When he was asked for similarities between his faith and his football and whether he has a “mystical power” over his players, he said;

“I am only a guide. I allow others to express what they have in them. I have not created anything. I am a facilitator of what is beautiful in man. I define myself as an optimist. My constant battle in this business is to get out there is beautiful in man. We can at this level portray me as naive.

“At the same time, it allows me to believe it and it often gives me reason.” Wenger who early in his career used to read from a book of prayers before matches says he doesn’t do that again and doesn’t feel his team needs ‘God to win.

“Unfortunately today, it works less! At the same time, fortunately, it means that my team does not necessarily need God to win. The only time possible for happiness is the present. The past gives regrets and future uncertainties. Man quickly realized this and created the religion. It forgives him what he has done wrong in the past and told him for the future not to worry. I’m always afraid of being late and not to be ready, not being able to accomplish all that I planned. My personal relationship with time is scary. To go back in time, to look behind yourself is equally staggering. First of all, you’re frightened because there is less to come than the time already spent. If you wallow with that feeling, it’s definitely scary and sometimes you feel guilty.”

Vardy Named Premier League Player Of The Month

The England international has been in brilliant form, helping Claudio Ranieri’s side climb to third in the league, just a point behind leaders Manchester City and Arsenal

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been named the Premier League Player of the Month for October, continuing a remarkable season for the Foxes.

Vardy has been in blistering form so far this season, netting five goals in four games in the month of October, helping Claudio Ranieri’s side on the way to three victories.

Leicester currently sit third in the Premier League table, one point behind leaders Manchester City and Arsenal, having defied all expectations ahead of the start of the season.

The 28-year-old has been at the heart of the Foxes good form, rising to the top of the league scoring charts with 12 goals already this season and can match Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive Premier League matches when Leicester take on Newcastle on November 21.

Vardy’s latest, becoming his ninth goal in successive games, came with a penalty in the 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday, taking his form into November.

“Manchester United Must Start Making Life Easier For Themselves”- Bastian Schweinsteiger

The German says he experienced 10-man defences in the Bundesliga

Manchester United are making strides towards breaking down defensive opponents says Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Reds finally shattered West Brom’s 10-man blockade at Old Trafford on Saturday with second half goals from Jesse Lingard and a late Juan Mata penalty.

But the German midfielder concedes the Reds still have to get better and understands the fans frustration with United’s possession style and lack of excitement.

“You recognise what the supporters are saying but football is not only attack,” says the 31-year-old.

“There are teams with different game styles and they also win titles. But especially in home matches we have to press and go forward.

“We did well offensively against West Brom. When you are playing a team who defend with ten men it is not easy to find the gaps. There is still room for improvement but we did improve on breaking a team down.

Schweinsteiger speaks excellent English
Schweinsteiger speaks excellent English

“Teams defending is not exclusive to England. In Munich it was exactly the same. It was difficult then with opponents defending heavily. I saw recently Bayern drew 0-0 at Frankfurt because Frankfurt were defending.

“It happens but you have to find solutions and this is where we can still improve to make it easier for ourselves.”

Wenger Reveals The Quality He Admires Most In Sir Alex Ferguson

The pair were rivals during Arsenal’s title battles with Manchester United but the Frenchman has revealed that he keeps in touch with his former adversary

Arsene Wenger admits the quality he admires in Sir Alex Ferguson is the former Manchester Unitedmanager’s ability to “reinvent himself”.

The duo were long-time rivals during United’s title battles with Arsenal but the Frenchman has revealed that he remains in contact with Ferguson, who won 38 trophies in his time at Old Trafford.

“For me, at this level, Ferguson is an example,” the Arsenal manager said in an interview with L’Equipe’s Sport & Style Magazine.

“For starters, he always knew how to reinvent himself, how to evolve. He did not stand still in success. It is a quality of his that I appreciate. He always knew how to challenge himself. Even if he did it instinctively.

“But he had other passions. He liked horses. Wine. He knew red wine better than I did. Recently, I met with him and I said to him: “Alex, do you not miss it?”. He responded to me “not at all”. I was at that moment disappointed and comforted. It gives me a reason to hope for myself.”

When asked about the prospect of retirement and whether he had a passion outside of football, Wenger replied: “No. That is where my natural anxiety comes from.

“I am not Ferguson. I do not have a substitute and I am not interested in looking back either. Like writing a book about what on my experiences. I suffer when I see former players who come back to see me and who are no longer fully happy.

“To be presented as Mr X, the former Arsenal player, and not for what he is today is painful. Having to be what you once were is a form of suffering. I hope, in my after-life [life after football], that I can be something other than the former manager of Arsenal. Coach kids. Be useful.”

Chelsea Are The Tiger Woods Of Football – Gullit

The Blues fell to their seventh defeat of the season against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday and the former manager has now spoken out on the crisis

Ruud Gullit feels opposing teams no longer fear Chelsea and has compared the ailing Premier League champions to golfing icon Tiger Woods.

Woods, a 14-time major winner, was widely regarded as the finest golfer to play the game for much of his career, but a massive slump in form has seen the American fall to number 362 in the world rankings.

Chelsea have endured a nightmare start to the 2015-16 season, with their loss at Stoke City on Saturday their seventh in just 12 Premier League games this term.

Jose Mourinho’s side sit 16th in the table – some 13 points off a top-four place – and Goal understands that the Portuguese is now hanging on to his job by a thread following a player revolt.

And former Chelsea boss Gullit told Sky Sports: “Chelsea are like Tiger Woods.

“In the beginning everybody who was competing with Tiger Woods already knew that they had lost the game. Now people see him and Chelsea and think: ‘We can beat them.’

“They lost that aura of invincibility. They lost it. You can feel it. You can sense it. The players also sense it that the opposition is not afraid of you anymore. You only get it back by getting results.”

However, Gullit feels that Mourinho is the man to turn the Blues’s form around in the coming weeks and months.

The Dutchman added: “In Holland there is a saying, Mourinho he has to drink the last drop of the cup of poison. To the last drop. If the last drop is done then things will change. I think he is the only one who can change it.  He can change it.

“If he had said after the last game: ‘I’m wrong. I didn’t need to do that. I was emotional. You’re right. I should have this punishment.’ Then everyone would forgive him.

“In the past when the team won with Mourinho, it was Mourinho who won. When they lost, it was Mourinho who lost. All of a sudden this year, he was blaming the players. Now it was Mourinho who won and the players who lost. That was a bit of a difference I saw. He was criticising his players. Beforehand he always guarded his players. Protected them.”

Mourinho: I Might Not Watch Chelsea’s Clash With Stoke

The former Real Madrid manager is banned from the Britannia Stadium due to an FA disciplinary charge, but says his assistants are prepared for all circumstances

Jose Mourinho admits he does not know if he will watch Chelsea‘s clash with Stoke City after rejecting the chance to appeal his stadium ban.

Mourinho saw his appeal against a suspended stadium suspension relating to comments made to the media rejected on Thursday, and he insists he “already knows the result” of a potential second appeal after being punished for his behaviour during the club’s 2-1 loss to West Ham.

The Blues boss will travel with the side to the Britannia Stadium before leaving the team in the hands of his assistants, and claims he has made no plans as to where he will watch the match.

“I have no plans, maybe I sit in street corner with my iPad, I don’t know,” he told reporters.

“If I cannot contact with the game maybe I don’t even watch the game. I can’t contact with the game so what’s the point? Live score, results, maybe.”

Mourinho, though, says the Blues are well-prepared for every eventuality, with the Portuguese having thoroughly briefed his backroom team.

“If the first 10 minutes we are playing with seven men they are not prepared for that, they have to decide themselves. The game isn’t predictable, you don’t know the direction but we can try to reduce that and that we did,” he added.

“The most incredible scenarios that you can imagine, let’s go to extreme scenarios. At half-time winning 4-0, at half-time losing 4-0 and in between those you have 1000 options. Be dominating and controlling the game, being dominated and not having control, having problems in this area, in that area, injuries, four red cards, we went through all these different scenarios and they are prepared.

“What I think is important is for them to feel protected by the fact that it is my responsibility and it is just for the players to play and for the assistants to be with them and be supportive.”

Chelsea were knocked out of the League Cup by Stoke on penalties, but rubbished the suggestion that his side would go in search of revenge, insisting they have nothing to avenge.

“Revenge for what? What’s the problem? Why? We played a good game, people were nice to us, our supporters were fantastic, no problems between supporters, a great football match, a good referee, a good show for everyone,” he added.

“One team scores one more penalty, one team left happy, one team left unhappy, everything was normal, revenge for what?”

Super Eagles In Free Fall On FIFA Rankings

The fortune of Nigeria on the monthly Coca-Cola FIFA World Rankings witnessed a further downward trend as the Super Eagles did not only lose seven places, but failed to make Top 10 on the African continent.

Nigeria, who were on number 52 in October, fell to 59 in the latest ranking made public by FIFA on Thursday. While the likes of Cape Verde climbed nine places, from 41 in October to 32 in November and DR Congo climbed five places, from 60 in October to 55 in November, star studded Nigerian team failed to make positive impact on the world ranking.

Ivory Coast dethroned Algeria from their number one spot in Africa as the North African team lost seven places in the latest ranking. Algeria were on number 19 last month, but dropped to 26 this month, while the Ivorians are 22 in the latest ranking.

Ghana’s Black Stars are third in Africa with their number 30 on the ranking with Cape Verde (32), Senegal (39), Tunisia (41), Cameroon (51), Congo (52), Guinea (53), DR Congo (55) completing Africa’s Top 10 in that order.

Egypt (57) and Nigeria are on numbers 11th and 12th respectively.

Bayern Were Superior To Arsenal, Admits Cech

The former Chelsea goalkeeper has acknowledged the Gunners were not good enough to hold off the German giants, but is adamant they can still progress in Europe

Petr Cech has admitted Bayern Munich were superior to Arsenal in Wednesay’s Champions League encounter at the Allianz Arena, but refuses to give up hope of reaching the knockout stages.

Arsene Wenger’s men had recorded a 2-0 win over the Bundesliga champions in the reverse fixture, but were outclassed in Munich as Bayern cruised to a 5-1 win.

“It’s tough to take but in a way you have to accept that the team you were playing against was superior to us today in everything they did, especially in the first half,” Cech told the official Arsenal website.

“You now need to win two games and we need to make sure that the head to head against Olympiacos is in our favour. Then you can go through.

“Everything is possible. We have two games to play, we have to regroup and continue fighting until the last minute.

“It was not a day we wanted, but every game comes thick and fast. You need to make sure that you recover and move on to the next one.”

Arsenal sit fourth in Group F with three points from four games, trailing second-placed Olympiacos by six points.

Pogba Needs Time To Grow Into Juventus Role – Del Piero

The 40-year-old believes Juve’s new number 10 must be given more time to develop into the role, following calls for improvement from Massimiliano Allegri

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has called for patience towards Paul Pogba after his slow start to the season.

Pogba has struggled for form since taking over the iconic number 10 shirt in Turin at the start of the campaign, and this has coincided with the Serie A champion’s worst domestic start in over 30 years.

Despite setting up Stephan Lichtsteiner in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Borussia Monchengladback on Wednesday, coach Massimiliano Allegri urged he still must improve.

Yet Del Piero feels he must be given time to grow into the role.

“Today it [the no. 10 shirt] is being worn by a very young and very talented player who half of Europe want to sign,” he said.

“Let’s give him time to learn, to make mistakes and to grow.”

Del Piero – the 2006 World Cup winner – also refused to rule out a playing comeback, despite last appearing in an official match in December 2014.

“I’ve never said [that I am definitely retired]. Football is my passion but there has to be a time when you officially say it is time to stop,” he added. “Who knows what will happen.

“I’m going through a period of reflection at the moment. I will always live my life through football, even if I end up doing something else and I’ll never fully turn my back on it.”

Carrick Defends Van Gaal: ‘I’ll Take Winning Over Tactics’

Having been criticised for their pedestrian style of play, the midfielder says tactics are over-analysed in the present era of football when games are being won

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick feels criticisms of Louis van Gaal‘s tactics are misguided and insisted they should not be a concern if his side are winning.

United have been criticised for their possession-based game under manager Van Gaal, who has showed no sign of moving away from his rigid and risk-free approach, despite growing frustration among supporters.

Chants of “attack, attack, attack” were sang during United’s 1-0 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday, while the withdrawal of Anthony Martial for Marouane Fellaini was met by boos.

Carrick, however, feels complaints over tactics should not be made given they are winning games.

“It’s about winning, isn’t it?” said Carrick. “Winning games and trophies.

“Of course we want to play exciting football and score loads of goals, but it’s not always easy when teams are coming and putting 10 men behind the ball. It’s difficult.

“I think there’s an awful lot made of tactics these days. People like to talk about that a lot more now than they did in the past.

“Different managers have different systems and the way they set the teams up. That’s just the nature of the game.

“Obviously our game is based on possession and dominating teams with possession. But at the end of the day, you have to score. That’s the name of the game.

“I don’t think it’s more conservative [under Van Gaal]. I just think it’s slightly different, in some ways, but not all ways.

“I thought we were more dynamic and aggressive in terms of attacking and getting forward quickly and getting crosses in the box.

“If you win 1-0 then the tactics don’t get discussed that much. That’s the way of things. It’s fine lines isn’t it?

“Yes, there are things as a team that we do differently to how we did them in the past but to me, that’s just obvious when you have a new manager and he has different beliefs.

“There’s a lot made of tactics and things at the minute, but as players we can’t get too involved in that. We just do what the manager tells us.”

“Van Gaal Told Us To Ignore Frustrated Man United Fans” – Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard say Louis van Gaal instructed Manchester United to shut out the chants from supporters unhappy with the performance against CSKA Moscow

Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard said manager Louis van Gaal told his players at half-time to “ignore the fans” in the 1-0 Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford.

United supporters vocalised their frustration towards the Dutch boss throughout the European tie, chanting “attack, attack, attack” at Van Gaal, with his preferred possession-based style wearing thin with fans accustomed to a more direct approach.

The home side had failed to score in 404 minutes before Wayne Rooney’s headed winner with 11 minutes remaining, and Lingard – who supplied the assist – admitted he was trying to excite the fans.

“I was trying to be as direct as I could and get the crowd on their feet,” the 22-year-old attacker said.

“Obviously I had to be direct at the right time, so we had to be patient sometimes. I’m glad the goal came.”

When asked what advice Van Gaal had given the players during the interval, Lingard said: “Just to keep going and perform the same as the first half. Be patient, ignore the fans and keep playing your own game.”

United moved to the top of Group B with their victory and hold a one-point lead over PSV and Wolfsburg.

Gareth Bale Set To Be Fit For El-Clasico

Despite missing Wales’ friendly with Netherlands, Chris Coleman says the Real Madrid star is expected to be fit for El Clasico later this month

Wales boss Chris Coleman has suggested Gareth Bale will be fit in time for El Clasico on November 21 despite not being selected for the friendly with Netherlands in Cardiff.

Bale is not in the squad for the friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on November 13, with Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey also not selected, as the pair recover from calf and hamstring problems respectively.

Madrid forward Bale limped out of his side’s 3-0 win over Levante in the first game back following the international break, in which he helped Wales qualify for Euro 2016.

And Coleman explained it was a case of not wishing to gamble on Bale’s fitness rather than anything more concerning.

“I think, having [had] the correspondence with Madrid, he’ll probably figure in the next game for them [after the international break] I would imagine,” he explained.

“But they want to use this time wisely and carefully and get him up to speed. We respect that.

“Gareth also wants to do what’s right. It’s not in our nature to take risks with players.”

Bale is likely to be involved against Barca in the first Clasico of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu – the rivals currently level on points at the top of La Liga.

On Sunday, Bale posted a picture of his return to training on Twitter with the message: “Back on the pitch stepping up my rehab!”

John Terry Hits Out At Robbie Savage Criticism

The ex-England captain has previously been criticised by the former Blackburn Rovers midfielder and has now hit back with a devastating retort in a press conference

John Terry is happy to receive criticism over his Chelsea performances, as long as it doesn’t come from Robbie Savage!

Jose Mourinho’s side have failed to win any of their previous four games in all competitions and sit 15th in the Premier League table following six defeats in 11 fixtures so far.

The Chelsea captain has been criticised for his displays, with television pundit Savage tweeting “it could be the beginning of the end for Terry” following his half-time substitution in the defeat to Manchester City earlier this season.

The 34-year-old admits he is happy to be questioned by decorated former players such as Rio Ferdinand, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville, but has blasted Savage, suggesting he was not successful enough to castigate him.

“It’s a case of, for me, we are where we are as a group. I’ve come under criticism, individually, from certain players who I’ve looked up to,” Terry said.

“I take it on the chin from Rio, Carra [Carragher], Neville. [From] the best in the game, I take it in. When certain other people speak, maybe I don’t listen.

“When players who haven’t had a career come for people who’ve achieved what I achieved – Robbie Savage being one. He’s dug me out a couple of times.

“You take it as a footballer, as an individual. I’ll take it from people like Rio, Carragher and Neville. From others? No.”

NFF Says They Will Not Sack Samson Siasia

Despite intense media speculation that national U-23 team coach, Samson Siasia would be sacked soon, a member of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ahmed Yusuf Fresh has informed that the football house has no intention of sacking the Olympic silver medal-winning coach.

Speaking exclusively to Sports Vanguard yesterday, Yusuf said:

“There has never been a time we in the technical committee or at the executive committee level discussed any such thing. I am a member of both committees and never has that come up for discussion.”

Fresh admitted however, that Siasia was queried after what was taken as an affront against his employers.

He added: “But that was not enough for the media to suggest that it would lead to Siasia’s sack.

“Siasia was queried and he has since answered to the query. It is a normal administrative procedure which should not call for speculations that are unfounded. There is no intention to sack Siasia,”he repeated.

“I Am The Best Candidate To Run World Football” – Michel Platini

Michel Platini has insisted he remains the best candidate to run world football despite his ongoing suspension from the game.

UEFA president Platini has been given a provisional 90-day suspension while a £1.3 million payment he received from FIFA is investigated.

That has thrown into doubt his eligibility to stand in February’s election to replace current FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who has also been suspended by the governing body’s ethics committee.

Platini is one of seven candidates in the race but will only be on the ballot in February if his ban is lifted

However, Platini insisted he would not be thrown off course.

“I am, in all humility, the most able to run world football,” he said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

“This suspension prevents me from campaigning and fighting on an equal footing. It clouds what is really at stake in this election for the future of world football.

“Even if I cannot go out campaigning, I fully consider myself a candidate. Today, I have the sense of being a knight from the Middle Ages, in front of a castle. I am trying to get in to bring football back, but instead I’m having boiling oil poured on my head.”

Platini was suspended earlier this month when it emerged that he had been paid £1.3m by FIFA in 2011 for work completed nine years earlier.

However, Platini insisted everything about the payment — which was made three months before a FIFA presidential election in which Platini opted not to challenge Blatter — was above board and properly handled.

“The two million [Swiss francs] represents the equivalent of four years’ salary arrears that FIFA owed me when I was the president’s special adviser. The president himself offered me a contract and a salary that I accepted,” he said.

“So to be clear: Was there work provided? Yes. Is an oral contract legal in Switzerland? Yes. Did I have the right to reclaim my money even nine years later? Yes. Did I produce a proper invoice as FIFA required? Yes. Was the money declared to the taxman? Yes.”

Asked directly about claims that the payment was effectively a bribe to keep him from standing in 2011, Platini said: “These other allegations are not based on anything.”

Seven candidates have been confirmed and will stand in FIFA’s presidential election which also includes Michel Platini.

He also played down the idea that Blatter’s decision to pay him so soon before the election was effectively a trap.

“I don’t want to believe in conspiracy theories,” he said. “Yes, I have waited a long time to reclaim what I was owed. But the only mistake is that I let several years go by.

“I had faith in the word of the FIFA president and I knew he would pay me one day. I was lucky enough not to need the money, but just because I don’t need the money doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be paid for my work.”

Blatter had also given his account of events in the interview he conducted with the TASS news agency this week.

Asked about the contract with Platini, Blatter had said: “When he was chairman of the organising committee for the France World Cup, he told me at the end of the cup, ‘I would like to work for you.’ And I said this is great because we all already worked with him. It was in 1998.

“And then he said that ‘I am very expensive.’ I said OK. So he said, ‘I am worth one million a year.’ I said, ‘I cannot pay this, it’s impossible.’ And he said, ‘OK, then pay me later.’ So we have made some contract, where he got some money, but not one million.

“He was working until he was elected in 2002 to FIFA Executive Committee and UEFA Executive Committee. He stopped his working contract because he was then an official of FIFA. He never touched this item until 2010.

“In 2010 he approached the financial director of FIFA by saying, ‘Hey, listen, FIFA owes us money.’ I was informed about that and I said, ‘OK, let him make an invoice of this, what we owe him.’ And then he said we owe him two million Swiss francs. And then I analysed that and I said OK.

“Yes, it’s a contract we have made. And it’s a principle I have in my life that if you owe money to somebody, then you pay it. Then we paid it. That’s all. And this money was not paid for any other reasons.”

“Kelechi Iheanacho Is More Than A Finisher” – Manchester City Coach Pellegrini

Manchester City and Nigerian youth prodigy,Kelechi Iheanacho scored one and gave two classic assist as city beat Crystal Palace 5-1.
The Nigerian youth prodigy has been receiving rave reviews from coach Pellegrini and city fans.

Manuel Pellegrini hailed new Blue hero Kelechi Iheanacho for his goalscoring full debut … but it was the two assists that really made the boss smile.

And the Engineer, usually reticent to lavish praise on individuals, especially young ones, said he had “no doubts” the Nigerian has a big future.

His performance evoked memories of Daniel Sturridge – and he has the same self-confident swagger,
on and off the field.

The 19-year-old grabbed the attention as the Blues cruised into the League Cup quarter-finals with a 5-1 thrashing of Crystal Palace to set up a home tie with Championship side Hull.

But for Pellegrini, the way he squared the ball for Kevin de Bruyne to score the second, and then expertly teed up Manu Garcia for his first City goal, meant much more.

“Kelechi for me is not just a finisher,” said Pellegrini. “He played very well. He must improve his control.

“But he always played with his head up so he made two important assists. He set up Kevin de Bruyne and after that, with more space, made a goal for Manu Garcia.
He can play behind the striker and arrive in the box to finish, as he did for his goal.

“It was very important for him to make a very good performance – he is a very good player.

Dynamo Kiev Considering Segregating Black Fans From Other Supporters To Alleviate Racism Fears

A stadium chief at the club has said a ‘black sector’ could help after four black men were attacked in the ground last week

Dynamo Kiev are considering segregating black fans from other supporters in their stadium to minimise the risk of racism in the ground.Four black men were attacked in the home section during last week’s Champions League draw with Chelsea.UEFA are yet to decide on what disciplinary sanctions they will hand to the club after the shocking footage emerged.Volodimir Spilchenko, director of the stadium, has revealed a ‘black sector’ is one way in which Dynamo are considering trying to combat the problem.”We are trying, maybe, to make a special sector (for black fans),” Spilchenko said. “In order to avoid the manifestation of racism.

A journalist suggested the idea, to which Spilchenko replied: “We’ll probably listen to your offer.”The appalling video shows a group of men spotting the black supporters, before chasing them in a targeted attack.Dynamo have previously had to close part of their stadium after racist behavior from their supporters towards Everton players in the Europa League. However, Ukraine Football Federation vice-president Ohor Kochetov denies there is a racism problem at the Olimpiyskiy Stadium and even questioned the black people who were attacked. Kochetov told the Ukrainian news portal Vesti: “[The presence of the black fans] in the sector that is always occupied by the ‘Rodychi’ ultras is highly surprising to everyone.”People of that category (black people) have never been there. Initial information indicates that these people were without tickets and were holding flares.”Maybe this was a specially planned provocation. These are all questions that require answers.”

‘Guardiola Will Move To The Premier League… Sooner Rather Than Later’ – Henry

The Arsenal legend thinks the Catalan boss’ competitive streak and desire to win trophies will not allow him to stay away from English football for much longer

Thierry Henry expects Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola to manage a Premier League club in the near future.

Guardiola’s contract with Bayern expires in June, and the former Barcelona boss has indicated he is in no rush to sign an extension.

And Henry, who won two league titles and the Champions League under Guardiola during his time at Barca, believes the 44-year-old is well suited to Premier League football.

“I think eventually he will come,” Henry told Sky Sports News. “He’s a competitor, he will want to win a title in every league possible.

“It will suit him, being here in the Premier League. He’s a great guy, [and he has a] great view of the game. He’s one or two steps ahead, he’s in control of everything, the way he loves the game is second to none.

“He is one of the best managers I’ve ever had. One thing that strikes me with him that you don’t see, he’s one of those guys who’s very demanding and [the] discipline that he has is on point. You need that amount of discipline to perform on and off the field.”

Henry added: “He already speaks English, by the way… maybe that’s one thing that tells us he will come sooner rather than later.”
