The NCC flagged of it’s 2017 Year of the Consumer programme with an event which held at the head office in Abuja.

In attendance, were dignitaries across the country. Senator Adeola Yayi, Honourable Herman Hembe and Honourable Fijabi who was on seat to represent the Honourable Speaker of the Federal House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara.

 

In a statement signed and made available to Omojuwa.Com by Mr. Tony Ojobo, Director of Public Affiars, said the commission will use the flag off to unveil the strategy and series of activities aimed at empowering and protecting the consumers of telecommunications services in Nigeria.

It added that throughout the year, improving the experience of the consumer will be the major focus of the Commission working with other key stakeholders vital to the success of the campaign.

The flag off for the year round programme, which held at the NCC headquarters in Abuja, is expected to attract consumers across the country, top government officials and key stakeholders in the industry.

The Abuja event coincides with the commemoration of the World Consumer Rights Day, WCRD, 2017, themed; ‘Building a Digital World Consumers Can Trust’.

Key components of the Year of the Consumer include creation of greater awareness on Quality of Service, Electromagnetic Magnetic Fields, EMF, Do Not Disturb, DND, and NCCs 622 complaint line.

The campaign hopes to secure the support of network operators towards meeting set targets and key performance indicators, KPIs on quality of services especially as it affects drop calls.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta had said in Abuja that consumer protection and empowerment is one of the eight pillars of the 8- Point Agenda of his administration, revealing that the Commission is dedicating the year to the welfare of telecom consumers.

The Senate President who was ably represented by Senator Adeola Yayi. Yayi in his speech reiterated the plan of the senate to introduce a consumer protection bill which will not only protect consumers but also check the excesses of industry players who engage in unfair competition practices due to undue market dominant advantages.

Honourable Fijabi who represented the HOR Speaker, Yakubu Dogara also spoke on the need for laws that protect consumers from unfair practices by service providers and also keep telcoms on their toes.

During the course of the event, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta seized the opportunity to unveil the faces of NCC in person of comedian Helen Paul of the Tatafo fame and movie actor Ali Nuhu of the Kannywood fame.

Nigeria’s Didi Akinyelure, a business journalist with CNBC Africa, has won the  BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.

Nigerians would once again experience fuel scarcity as Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and its Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, will as from today embark on an indefinite nationwide strike, in protest of governments failure to carry out Turn Around Maintenance, TAM, of the nation’s refineries. 2. A 32 year-old Sani Saidu from Gombe State is currently in the custody of the Lagos state Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Yaba , Lagos, over an of alleged murder of his master. Saidu allegedly murdered his master, a truck driver because he wanted to divert the petroleum tanker he was driving. He confessed that he murdered his boss because he needed N150,000.

3. There is an ongoing crisis at the Lagos State University, LASU, as the general congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of the institution, weekend, suspended its Exco members led by Mr. Adekunle Idris over poor leadership style.

4. Human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana SAN, has petitioned the United States-based Coca-Cola Company, for failing to respect international standards in its manufacturing process and for also refusing to allow its products to be inspected by the Consumer Protection Council of Nigeria, CPC.

5. Even though the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has said that the owner of the gas facility that exploded in Akure, the state capital, has no approval to operate in the area, he has promised that his government will compensate victims of the explosion and as well pay their medical bills. He made the promise at the Truama Centre in Ondo where some of the victims were receiving treatment.

6. The Force Headquarters on Sunday insisted that before security details can be restored around Tambual, he should apply to the police. The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu said police can only approve Tambuwal’s request as a governorship candidate and not as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

7. Former Niger Delta Militant, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo has denied the ongoing media reports that he has acquired six warships for the protection of the waterways. Speaking through his spokesman, Comrade Paul Bebenimibo, Tompolo said there was no element of truth in the rumour as the gunboats had been in the care of NIMASA for over two years and not under his care.

8. The Peoples Democratic Party has accused the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari, for allowing an alleged cabal controlled by a former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Tinubu to choose his running mate for him. This was contained in a statement the party issued on Sunday.

9. The All Progressives Congress on Sunday said the party was yet to settle for Buhari’s running mate. 2. The Lagos state police are in search of a 13-year-old girl, Chikwuo Ezennia, who reportedly fled her house with a yet-to-be-identified man, who is alleged to be her lover. The girl who has record of fleeing her home to stay with men was in Lagos for holiday, but alleged that she was being maltreated in her aunt’s house and would be staying away for one week. Report says she was seen with a man.

3. Lagos state has been chosen as the venue of December 10 presidential primary of the APC. Report says eight thousand delegates are expected to participate in the convention. The primary will hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

4. Olubukunola Onabanjo, the daughter of the late governor of Ogun state, Chief Bisi Onabanjo has resigned her appointment as the chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission. in her reason for the decision, she said the governor had accused her of having a ‘soft spot’ for a former governor of the state, Chief Olusegun Osoba.

5. The All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Rivers State, Mr Dakuku Peterside has said that the allegation leveled against him by the Rivers Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that he is a cultist was not only unkind but uncharitable and evil. He has vowed to challenge any attempt by anybody or a group of persons to tarnish his hard-earned reputation.

6. Nigeria is now 39th most corrupt nation in the world. According to the Corruption Perception Index 2014 released by the global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, on Wednesday, Nigeria scored 27 out of a maximum 100 marks, occupying the 136th position out of the 175 countries surveyed for the report.

7. Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party from Rivers State, numbering over 200 stormed the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja, protesting against the alleged plan by the party and the Presidency to impose a former Minister of State (Education), Mr. Nyesom Wike, on them as the party’s governorship candidate. The protesters who took over the party secretariat forced the secretariat to shut down, as the entrance was blocked.

8. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday in Abuja said that the conduct of the 2015 general elections in the North-East would be based on advice from security agencies. INEC says only assurances from security agencies on the safety of its personnel, materials as well as free atmosphere will determine whether election will hold in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in 2015.

9.A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has said he will appeal the Federal High Court judgment on Tuesday where his bid to return as PDP chairman was dismissed. Tukur through his lawyer, Mr. Adeboro Adamson, on Wednesday told journalists that the notice of appeal would be filed in the Court of Appeal, Abuja, on Thursday.

10. About nine persons were reportedly killed and scores injured as gunmen, suspected to be Fulani marauders, on Tuesday evening invaded Ashige community of Lafia East Development Area of Nasarawa State. Report says the incident occurred at 5pm when the gunmen attacked farmers who were returning home from their farm.

1. The Police yesterday disrupted a peaceful protest against incessant Boko Haram killings in the north. The protest was staged by a coalition of youth group under the umbrella of Arewa Liberation Movement in Kaduna. Some journalists covering the protest were assaulted by the anti-riot policemen mobilized to the scene. The march started at about 8:30am at the popular Lugard Hall Roundabout.

2.Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has compared President Goodluck Jonathan’s reign with that of the biblical king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, describing Jonathan as a President that patronizes impunity. Soyinka in paper presentation in Lagos discussed Jonathan’s government and the current events in the country, using the title; “King Nebuchadnezzar – The Reign of Impunity.”

3. Crisis ensued at the Ebute Meta area of Lagos on Tuesday at the end of a primary election conducted for two candidates of the All Progressives Congress ? Oladele Adekanye (Lado) and Bashiru Oloto who are aspiring to grab the APC ticket to represent the Lagos Mainland Constituency 1 in the 2015 elections. Four youths were shot dead, while several others were wounded, as 20 vehicles were also vandalised in the ensuing violence.

4. The senators agitating for the impeachment of President Goodluck Jonathan have agreed to begin the impeachment process on December 16. One of the Senators spearheading the move in the Senate, Senator Alkali Jajere, disclosed the latest plan on Tuesday in Abuja. He said that the Senators have agreed to commence the process on the said date.

5. The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has alleged that some prison officials must have collaborated with the gunmen that invaded the Ado Ekiti federal prison, asking the Federal Government to investigate the Monday attack on the prison.

6. The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday cried out that the Department of State Service, SSS embarked on a second raid on the party’s data centre in Ikeja on Monday night. In a statement by the party through its Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, it said the action of the SSS was the height of lawlessness.

7. The First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Tuesday faulted media reports that she was imposing governorship candidates in some states ahead of the 2015 general elections. In her denial, Mrs Jonathan said she could not have performed such a role because she was not an elected official of the state nor a PDP official.

8. About £315 million Abacha loot would soon be returned to Nigeria by the State of Jersey, the biggest territory in the Channels Island. This was disclosed by Mr Michael Birt, the Bailiff of Jersey durig a dinner in honour of Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK during a state visit to the Island.

9. Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, yesterday, warned the Federal Government to desist from retrenching workers under the guise of austerity measures. The President of the Association and its General Secretary, Bobboi Bala Kaigama and Alade Bashir Lawal, in a statement said any attempt by government to sack workers or reduce their salaries would be resisted.

10. A man and his wife were knocked down and killed by a drunken driver in Ode Irele, Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday. Report says three of their grandchildren equally sustained various degrees of injuries as the car ran into them while they were in front of their house at Gbaleju area. The driver of the car, identified as Abisoye Wobo, was allegedly drunk and was returning from a burial ceremony.

Based on Federal Government’s request, the United States has announced the cancellation of the training of a battalion of the Nigerian Army. A statement issued from the Information Office of the US Embassy in Abuja, on Monday, said the early termination of the programme was regrettable as the aim was to train the army on counter terrorism.

President Jonathan’s visit to the Obafemi Awolowo University continues to cause more problems at the institution as six students of the school were injured in a clash between two factions. While one of the factions is reportedly anti-Jonathan, the other is in support of the President.

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram on Sunday night, stormed the Federal Prisons in Ado Ekiti and set their members in prison custody free. Report says the gunmen succeeded in killing one person suspected to be a prison official, and also set freed their injured colleagues in prison.

Several people were killed in both Damaturu, the Yobe state capital and Maiduguri, the Borno state capital when gunmen invaded both state capitals in what appeared like a coordinated Boko Haram attack. While the Damaturu attack was an attempt to take over the government house, the Maiduguri blast was a suicide attack at the Monday market.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed on Monday granted an ex parte application seeking leave by the PDP to commence its suit against Tambuwal. PDP is seeking the removal of Speaker of the House Representative, Tambuwal since he is no longer a member of the PDP that sponsored him to the House, having defected to the APC.

A former Federal Commissioner for Information and South South leader, Chief Edwin Clark has cautioned governors of Rivers and Katsina states, Rotimi Amaechi and Ibrahim Shema to be careful with their political statements that are capable of heating up the polity. While he faulted Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s statement on Wednesday, November 19 during the Salvation rally in Abuja by the All Progressives Congress, APC, he scolded Shema for referring to those in other political parties as cockroaches that must be crushed.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the release of the detained five officials of the All Progressives Congress, terming their continuous detention as illegal. The detained staff include Chinedu Atuche, Fayemi Olaposi, Augustine Onuchukwu, Ebun Ilori and Esther Enem who were arrested by the Department of State Services during a raid of the APC data office in the Ikeja area of Lagos on November 22.

Ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, otherwise known as Tompolo, has denied recent allegation levelled against him, that he was behind the abduction of 14 journalists in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State. He said the allegation was not only untrue but misleading. He denied the allegation in a statement he personally issued.

Report says Mr. Odia Abraham, father of Master Omonigho Abraham, the four-year-old boy, who was attacked by two dogs in Igando area of Lagos State, against experts’ advise discharged his son from the hospital. Odia removed his son from the Burns and Plastics unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, where he was receiving specialist care, insisting that healthy granulation tissue growing on his son’s skull must not be removed.

Report says wife of the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, Amina, is currently mourning as she reportedly lost few of her family members in the multiple explosions that hit the Kano Central Mosque on Friday last week. Mrs Sambo hails from Kano state.

1. The Senate yesterday in a closed-door meeting, questioned service chiefs for about eight hours over the insurgency situation in the north-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Those who appeared before the Senate were Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Adesola Amosu; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah; and the Director of the Department of State Service, Mr. Ekpeyong Ita.

2. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has cautioned the opposition-APC to stop attacking President Goodluck Jonathan and his office, else the party will be forced to take a drastic action against it. PDP Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh handed down the warning in a statement yesterday.

3. Report says over 60 people were killed yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital when two suicide bombers believed to be Boko Haram member detonated some explosives in the city market. Report says 97 people were equally injured in the explosion.

4. In an effort to confront the falling oil prices at the International market, the Central Bank of Nigeria has further devalued the naira by 13 naira. Naira now exchanges for 168 per 1 dollar. CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele disclosed this while briefing journalists shortly after the MPC meeting at the bank’s headquarters in Abuja.

5. An ex Police Commissioner of Lagos State, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, on Tuesday ‘blasted’ both the police and the Department of State Security over their disagreement on the prosecution of the Nyanya blast suspect, Sodiq Aminu Ogwuche, leading to the striking out of the case for lack of prosecution. He said the disagreement between the two agengies raises fundamental questions.

6. Report says salaries of the missing 30 mobile policemen in Borno State would be stopped by April next year, if the men did not show up at their squadron units before then.

7. The Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers has asked Governor Ayodele Fayose and the embattled Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin, to stop the ‘cat and dog’ fight for the interest of peace in the state. The Council lamenting that a domestic matter had been taken outside the state, warning that both parties in the state be called to order.

8. A final year student of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST, was yesterday arrested by the Police during a cult initiation ceremony at the back of the university. Police Spokeman in the state, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, said a graduate of Cross River State University was also arrested during the ceremony. 1. Considering that the war against Boko Haram has no ‘end’ in sight, the Federal Government on Monday and for the third time resolved that the state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states be extended. The decision on the extension was taken at a meeting of the National Defence Council held on Monday.

2. Report says some PDP Governors have threatened to work against the party in the 2015 governorship election as they are reportedly angry with the party Chairman Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, for allegedly manipulating the result of the ward congresses in their respective states. Some of the angry governors, according to report are Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, Gabriel Suswam of Benue State, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State and that of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke.

3. A political drama ensued yesterday in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti state as the Peoples Democratic Party members in the state House of Assembly appointed Dele Olugbemi as Protem Speaker in the absence of the Speaker of the House. The PDP that had seven lawmakers in the 26-member assembly were reportedly joined by three unnamed persons. Report says all APC members of the House were stopped by security men from getting into the Assembly complex.

4. Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Convener of Save Nigeria Group and the General Overseer of Latter Rain Assembly,has said that former President, Olusegun Obasanjo killed students’ unionism in the country. While speaking at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, on Monday, Bakare said Obasanjo, as the then Head of State in 1978, used extreme force to frustrate Nigerian students during the ‘Ali Must Go’ protest.

5. The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Gbenga Ashafa, has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC will not be divided over the entrance of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal into the race for presidential ticket. He made this statement at an empowerment programme in Lagos.

6. The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress , Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, had on Mondaytermed the celebration of the Nigerian military over the recapture of Chibok from Boko Haram as a disgrace. Oyegun said it was a big disgrace that the rag tag militant captured Chibok from the hands of the military in the first place.

7. The #BringBackOurGirls campaigners were yesterday ignored by the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and Minister of State for Education, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, in their protest to the Ministry of Education over the killings of schoolchildren by Boko Haram in the North-East. The protesters who were at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja from 4.10pm to 5.45pm were not attended to by the Ministers.

8. Femi Fani Kayode’s legal battle against the EFCC is almost over as out of the amended 40 count-charge, bordering on an alleged offence by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC charged against Fani-Kayode, trial judge, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, discharged and acquitted the accused of 38 counts, while ruling on a no-case submission filed by the defence ( FFK) on behalf of the accused.

9. Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, Monday, said poor leadership was responsible for current national debacle. Soyinka advised that the country should rise above its present standard and equally raise a monument for the missing Chibok girls.

10. At least four persons were reportedly killed yesterday in Owerri, Imo State and Abonema in Rivers State, in different bloody attacks. In the attacks, several others sustained bullet wounds. Report says two of the deceased were killed at Ama Hausa, Owerri, Imo State capital, following a misunderstanding between a Hausa trader and an indigene of Owerri. The other two, according to report were killed when two rival cult groups clashed at Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Good morning, here are ten things you need to know this morning.

1. No fewer than 30 persons were feared killed and 60 others seriously injured after suspected Boko Haram members attacked Azare GSM market in Bauchi State on Sunday.

The latest attack is coming barely one week after the insurgents bombed the city, killing several persons.

2. The alleged planned defection of Governor Suswam of Benue State from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, became glaring yesterday after President Goodluck Jonathan and top party leaders shunned his 50th birthday bash.

The event, which took place at the Aper Aku stadium, Makurdi witnessed a low turn out as civil servants in the state are said to be at war with the governor over their unpaid four months salaries.

3. As schools resume in crisis-ridden Borno State today, the state government has announced that it would enlist the services of local vigilantes, called Civilian JTF, to provide security in public schools.

Students of public schools in the state are expected to return to classes today after being shut on March 16 due to security challenges.

Dr. Mohammed Dongel, the Chairman of the 19-man committee on the resuscitation of primary school education in the state made this announcement in Maiduguri on Sunday.

4. Controversial Islamic scholar and activist, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has once again voiced his conviction that Nigeria would boil if President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari contest the 2015 presidential election.

Gumi told Sunday Sun that the ongoing attacks by the Boko Haram sect may not end soon as the insurgents were being backed by the United States.

5. The All Progressives Congress on Sunday wrote off the almost 60 months of the Peoples Democratic Party-led administration, saying that it was one of the worst in the nation’s history.

The opposition party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary laughed off the scorecard reeled out by President Goodluck Jonathan during his declaration for the second term as “a scorecard of failure” and “claims of phantom achievements.”

6. President Goodluck Jonathan will today decide on the next line of action on Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states at the expiration of the emergency rule imposed on the three north-eastern states.

The states have been under emergency rule imposed following the continued activities of members of the Boko Haram sect.

There have been speculations that President Goodluck Jonathan may impose “total emergency rule” on the states by appointing military administrators to take over from the state governors.

7. On a good note, the authorities of the Nigerian military have said that the Special Forces have recaptured the town of Chibok in Borno State from the control of Boko Haram.

It was stated that the troops had secured the town and had restored normalcy to the area.

8. A former National Publicity Secretary of the now rested Congress for Progressive Change, Rotimi Fashakin, has said Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, would choose a southern Christian as his running mate.

Fashakin, a prominent figure in Buhari’s campaign organisation, ruled out the possibility of Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, a fellow Muslim, emerging as Buhari’s running mate.

9. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Fr. Mathew Kukah, have given assurance that Nigeria will not partition after the 2015 general elections.

The duo told Punch in separate interviews that Nigeria will remain united, no matter the drums of war being beaten by some persons who do not wish the country well.

10. Frontline Lagos lawyer and rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN, has raised the alarm that the $1bn loan the Federal Government requested to tackle insurgency in the country, may be diverted for the 2015 elections.

  He said this on Saturday during a national symposium to commemorate the first memorial anniversary of late Pro-National Conference co-founder, Baba Omojola.

Piers morgan who said  he was offered a two year deal from CNN to host 41 interviews and shows said he took the decision not to accept the two year deal as he has  decided to go try his hand on another job.
