Arsenal star Chuba Akpom set to dump England for Nigeria

Just like his clubmate Alex Iwobi, Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom is set to join the growing ranks of English-born footballers ready to play for Nigeria.

Though Akpom, who is currently on loan at Brighton, is yet to make a categorical statement on his international commitment, he, however, joined the Super Eagles’ Barnet training camp in England this week.

The 21-year old has played for England’s U-16 and U-21 sides.

The players were invited to join the Nigerian squad for a training match on Monday, for assessment by the technical crew.

Referee, Mark Clattenburg quits England for Saudi Arabia.

Famous referee, Mark Clattenburg, has quit the English Premier League (EPL) to continue his career in Saudi Arabia.

Clattenburg has now taken up a job with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF).

The Professional Match Official Limited (PGMOL) has issued a statement praising his contributions to the English game.

“PGMOL would like to wish Mark Clattenburg well as he prepares for his move to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation,” the statement read.

“Since joining the PGMOL Select Group in 2004, Mark developed into one of our top officials, refereeing at the highest level and setting standards for others to follow.

“His accomplishments are numerous and last season saw Mark achieve a memorable treble, on top of another consistently excellent season in the Premier League, as he officiated three major cup finals – the FA Cup final, the UEFA Champions League final and the UEFA Euro 2016 final.

“Mark is a talented referee, he has been a great asset to the English game and hopefully an inspiration to those who want to get into refereeing at the grass roots of the game.

“We understand this is an exciting opportunity for Mark as well as further underlining what high esteem English match officials are held throughout the world game.”

Clattenburg took charge of his first Football League game as a 25-year-old in a third division match between Chesterfield and York City.

Four years later, he had ascended to the Premier League, where his first match was Crystal Palace’s game against Everton.

Buckingham Palace offers £30,000-a-year to run the Queen’s personal Twitter feed

BUCKINGHAM Palace is offering a £30,000 salary for a job as the Queen’s personal tweeter.

“It’s finding new ways to maintain The Queen’s presence in the public eye and on the world stage.

“This is what makes working for the Royal Household exceptional.”

According to the ad, the right candidate must be university educated with an “eye to the future” and experience of managing websites.

According to the ad, the right candidate must be university educated with an “eye to the future” and experience of managing websites

The Queen also personally tweeted on her 90th birthday in June last year.

She posted: “I am most grateful for the many digital messages of goodwill I have received and would like to thank you all for your kindness. Elizabeth R.”

Queen Elizabeth II marks sapphire jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest reigning sovereign, on Monday set a new record as the first British monarch to reach her sapphire jubilee, with 65 years on the throne.

The queen, now 90, rose to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25 upon the premature death of her father, King George VI.

As with previous milestones in her long reign, Queen Elizabeth is likely to spend Accession Day privately at her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, eastern England.

Despite her reluctance to celebrate publicly, the occasion will be marked in Britain.

At the Tower of London, in the capital’s Green Park and all around the kingdom, gun salutes will be fired in tribute.

Sapphire is the 65th anniversary gemstone and a photograph has been reissued of the sovereign wearing a suite of sapphire jewellery given to her by her father as a wedding gift in 1947.

The 2014 portrait by David Bailey shows her wearing the glittering necklace, dating from 1850 and made of 16 large oblong sapphires surrounded by diamonds.

“She has very kind eyes with a mischievous glint. I’ve always liked strong women, and she is a very strong woman,” the photographer said at the time.

– Coins, stamps and salutes –
The Royal Mint is marking the anniversary with specially-designed commemorative coins, ranging from a £5 coin to a £1,000 solid gold one-kilogram coin — which actually costs £50,000 to buy.

The £5 ($6.25, 5.80-euro) coins feature the imperial state crown, rotated to show off the Stuart sapphire.

They also bear words from the famous quote in her 21st birthday speech to the Commonwealth back in 1947: “My whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.”

Meanwhile the Royal Mail has issued a £5 stamp in a sapphire blue colour.

“It’s very, very difficult to dislike her,” Andrew Gimson, author of “Gimson’s Kings and Queens”, told AFP.

“She’s never answered back, she’s always been above politics.

“On the whole, our politicians are very unpopular” with ordinary citizens.

“They’d much prefer having this dutiful woman carrying out this role.”

– Victoria’s record eclipsed –
Queen Elizabeth became Britain’s longest-serving monarch ever in September 2015, surpassing the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, a record she said was “not one to which I have ever aspired”.

She also became the longest-reigning living monarch in the world in October last year following the death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Queen Elizabeth’s three big jubilees were the silver jubilee in 1977 — after 25 years — marked by street parties and a world tour; the 2002 golden jubilee — at 50 years — featuring a pop concert at Buckingham Palace; and the diamond jubilee in 2012 — for 60 years — which saw a river pageant on the Thames in London.

As head of the Commonwealth, she has also been the monarch of Australia, Canada and New Zealand for 65 years.

With her advancing age, Queen Elizabeth is gradually handing over more duties to younger members of the royal family.

Her 34-year-old grandson Prince William, who is second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, is stepping down as an air ambulance pilot this year to carry out more royal duties on his grandmother’s behalf.

Queen Elizabeth Narrowly Escapes Being Shot By Palace Security

In what would have been the most disastrous domestic accident of this century, a Security personnel at the Buckingham Palace, nearly shot Her Majesty, as she was mistook for one of the several intruders.

The Queen was said to be taking a stroll around the palace following insomnia, a sleep disorder, she suffered. Palace sources say, the queen occasionally takes a late-night stroll when suffering from insomnia. The sources however added that, she most times fails to let her security staff know.

Experts in the working of United Kingdom monarchical system say, such incidences are the experiences one gets, as a member of the archaic hereditary UK monarchy that you have armed guards watching over you at all hours.

But that apparently almost backfired for the Queen when she decided to take a late-night walk around the palace grounds and came close to being shot.

From time to time her majesty is said to struggle to sleep. During a spell of insomnia, the 90-year-old will occasionally put on her coat and go for a short stroll, an ex-guardsman told The Times.

Late one night, he said he was patrolling inside the perimeter of the Palace walls when he spotted a figure in the darkness.
Thinking that he had caught a potentially dangerous intruder, sneaking into the Royal residence at 3am, he shouted: “Who’s that?”

But to his surprise, it was actually the Queen.
“Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you,” he is reported to have said, on impulse.

Perhaps realizing this wasn’t the tone to be used when addressing the Queen, he told The Times he expected a telling off. But the Queen reportedly took responsibility for putting him in such an awkward position.

“That’s quite all right,” she replied. “Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”

It is believed the encounter happened at the Queen’s normal weekday residence, Buckingham Palace.

In 2013, Prince Andrew was also mistaken for an intruder and confronted by armed police as he walked in the vast gardens.
Police said no weapons were drawn but issued an apology to the prince, despite the palace having been subject to several real security breaches in recent years.

In August, a 22-year-old man was arrested just after 4am after climbing over a security fence. He was spotted by officers monitoring CCTV.

In May, Denis Hennessy, 41, climbed over barbed wire and roamed the palace grounds for  about 10 minutes while The Queen, Prince Philip, and Prince Andrew were in residence.
When he was found by officers he repeatedly asked them: “Is Ma’am in?”
Before that, in 2013, a man scaled the perimeter fence and was found at around 10pm actually inside the building, in one of the State Rooms. None of the royals were home at the time.
The news of the near-shooting comes at a time when the public is particularly tuned into the Queen’s wellbeing. The elderly monarch was not seen for a fortnight over the Christmas period due to poor health.
She missed a New Year’s Day church service at Sandringham because of a lingering heavy cold, and just a week before that she and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, were forced to delay their journey from Buckingham Palace to their Norfolk estate after she fell ill.

Donald Trump set to meet the Queen on state visit.

The Queen is reportedly set to invite Donald Trump to Windsor Castle on an official state visit to the UK.

According to several newspapers, senior government officials are said to be drawing up plans for the visit as early as next year, as they ponder how to cement the “special relationship”.

The President-elect reportedly told Prime Minister Theresa May during a phone call last week that his late Scottish mother was a “big fan” of the Queen, according to the Sunday Times.

Mrs May could use the state visit to curry his favour, the newspaper added.

The move would also allow Mrs May to swat away claims that UKIP acting leader Nigel Farage has closer links to the tycoon, which have been dismissed by Downing Street.

A spokeswoman for No 10 said: “No visit has been organised but the Prime Minister is looking forward to welcoming the president-elect to the UK when he chooses to visit.”

Mrs May has been invited to visit Mr Trump at the earliest possible opportunity and she is expected to travel to the US after he is inaugurated on 20 January.

But a state visit by Mr Trump to the UK would allow her to roll out the red carpet and offer a meeting with the Queen.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “State visits and other meetings with overseas heads of state are organised on the advice of the Government.”

The reports came as Mrs May faced fresh calls to deliver what will be seen as a “hard Brexit” from a group of 60 Conservative MPs including prominent former cabinet ministers.

Michael Gove, Iain Duncan Smith, John Whittingdale and Theresa Villiers urged the PM to pull Britain out of the European single market and the customs union.

They claimed getting out of the single market free trade zone was crucial for the UK to become free of Brussels regulations.

Eleven Labour, DUP and UKIP MPs also reportedly backed the call.

A Government spokeswoman insisted there were “no binary choices” in the UK’s future trading relationship with the EU and that the Government would pursue a bespoke deal rather than an “off the shelf” solution.

She added: “That’s why the Government is painstakingly analysing the challenges and opportunities for all the different sectors of our economy.

“The Prime Minister has been clear that she wants UK companies to have the maximum freedom to trade with and operate in the single market – and to let European businesses do the same here.”

Rooney rejected move from Manchester United to China.

Wayne Rooney’s agent met with Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan, according to the club’s chairman

Wayne Rooney said he wanted to stay at Manchester United when offered a move to China, says Beijing Guoan’s honorary chairman.

Lou Ning claims the Chinese Super League side approached the 31-year-old United captain in the summer, and met with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford ahead of the new Premier League season.

However, according to Ning, Rooney has shown a desire to remain in the English top-flight until factors out of his control determine otherwise.

“We indeed made an approach for Rooney at the beginning of the season but he’s informed us that he wants to stay in Manchester United,” Ning told a Beijing radio sports show.

“Rooney says he’ll keep playing in the Premier League as long as his health allows. We even met with his agent.”

Jose Mourinho has left Rooney out of his starting line-up on a number of occasions this season, while the England skipper also lost his place in interim manager Gareth Southgate’s team.

Rooney is under contract at United until 2019 and Mourinho has insisted the former Everton striker is “going nowhere”, despite being linked with a move back to the Toffees as well as abroad.

Ronald Koeman also fuelled suggestions Rooney could return to where he began his career when the Dutchman admitted he would be pleased to have him back at Goodison Park.

BREAKING: Akpeyi, Iheanacho and Iwobi arrive in Eagles camp.

The England-based duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi have arrived in the Super Eagles camp ahead of this weekend’s crunch 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Algeria.

Both Iheanacho and Iwobi were in action in for their respective Premier League teams over the weekend.

As confirmed on the Super Eagles official twitter Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa are also in.

FA back away from Wenger with preference for English manager

The FA have distanced themselves from Arsene Wenger becoming the next England manager after confirming their preference is for an Englishman.

Football Association chairman Greg Clarke, while answering questions from MPs on alleged corruption in football, said the governing body “would like an English manager if we can get one”.

He said: “But if we can’t, we’d like someone who has managed extensively in the Premier League so he understands the English football system, its development, the EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan) etc.

“And I think we’d be crazy to appoint anyone who has never worked in English football. So it’s a taxonomy.”

Arsenal boss Wenger recently stated he was open to managing England “one day” but backed interim boss Gareth Southgate to take on the job full-time.

Southgate fits the criteria having managed Middlesbrough in the Premier League for three years between 2006 and 2009, when they were relegated.

Current Englishmen managing in the Premier League are Eddie Howe, Alan Pardew, Sean Dyce and Mike Phelan.

Steve Bruce, who recently took over at Aston Villa, was interviewed before the job was given to Sam Allardyce in the summer and is one of just five English managers outside the top flight that have Premier League experience.

Leeds United boss Garry Monk is another, as well as Neil Warnock, Steve McClaren, who failed to take England to Euro 2008 as boss, and Southend manager Phil Brown.

Facing a grilling from the Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee on Monday, FA chairman Clarke defended their handling of Allardyce’s departure after he was filmed by a newspaper discussing how to “get around” FA transfer rules.

Clarke said Allardyce “gave 100 per cent to FA commitments as manager” and “significant enquiries” on the ex-West Ham boss “raised no significant issues” before his appointment.

Clarke confirmed a financial settlement was made with Allardyce to terminate his contract by mutual consent, but he did not disclose the amount because of a confidentiality agreement.

Asked to justify the pay-off in light of grassroots issues, including a lack of funding, Clarke said: “I obeyed the law of the land and took the advice of a QC. Any right thinking person would rather spend money on facilities. But we will always obey the law. We took external advice.”

You Can’t Criticise Rooney – Lingard

Nobody should be criticising Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney because of what he has achieved in the game, according to Jesse Lingard.

The winger – recalled to the England squad and hoping to win his first senior cap in the World Cup qualifier against Malta on Saturday – does not feel that his skipper at club and international level deserves recent negative publicity for his performances.

Rooney has lost his place in United’s starting XI and has also seen his position for the national team questioned despite being kept on as captain after Euro 2016 by former manager Sam Allardyce and new interim boss Gareth Southgate.

“I think that, really, because [of what he’s achieved], no-one can say anything [bad] about him,” Lingard told reporters of England’s record goalscorer.

“He’s determined to get back and hopefully he can do that. I think he’s very determined.

“Even though he hasn’t been playing for the club, he’s still supporting us and he’s going to get back into the fold. He’s remained captain here, which is great, and that will be great for his confidence as well.

“I’ve known Wayne for a long time and he’s very determined to play. He’s got a love for the game which hasn’t left him. He’s been a top professional on and off the field for us and we look up to him as well.

“For the club, he’s a great leader for us – as young lads, we can speak to him whenever we want and he always helps the young lads, which is good. He’s been doing it now for a couple of years.”

Rooney has only scored once in 11 appearances for United and England in 2016-17.

UEFA Announces Champions League Changes

European football’s governing body has confirmed the top four ranked associations will receive four automatic places in the Champions League from 2018-19

UEFA has announced the top four ranked associations will receive four automatic spots into the Champions League from 2018-19, bypassing the qualification process.

The governing body has released a series of changes which are set to come into Europe’s elite club competition.

Amongst the changes are a new club co-efficient system starting from season 2018-19 and also a new system for both seeding and revenue distribution.

More to follow.

This Season’s Result Will Determine My Future At Arsenal – Wenger

Arsene Wenger has acknowledged that his future as Arsenal manager hinges on the new season’s results, but stressed that he planned to keep working no matter what.

Wenger has just one year left on his contract and, as he enters his 21st season as Arsenal boss, faces pressure to deliver a major title. The Frenchman — who has said he will not make a decision about his future until next summer — told BBC Radio 5 Live on Wednesday that “what I will do after will depend a little bit on how the season goes.”

Wenger, speaking at the Premier League launch day in London, also told Sky Sports that he realised his tenure might be coming to an end. “You never know. You have to do it as if it is your whole life, but you know as well that you can stop at any moment,” he said. Discussing links to the England job following the departure of Roy Hodgson after a dismal Euro 2016 campaign, Wenger said: “I think I have shown that I respect my contracts and I respect loyalty highly. I did always that with Arsenal.”

But the manager, who recently said he was “scared” of retirement, added that he had no plans to walk away from football if he did not get a new deal with the Gunners. “What I will do is continue to work as long as I have the physical potential to work, no matter in what kind of position,” he said. “I will always work.”

Although Wenger’s future is likely to remain a topic of discussion throughout the season, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said it would remain business as usual. “I have not seen anything different in him,” the England international told Sky Sports. “I see the same hunger, if not even more. “For me, he has been great over the years and he continues to be. I think he shows that with his hunger every year. He just keeps going each year.

“I think he really feels like he can win and do something special with this team.”

EPL Transfer Funds: “Rivals’ Budget Quite Scary” – Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says “it’s quite scary” to look at the money being spent to strengthen his Premier League rivals ahead of the new season.

Wenger spent £30 million on Granit Xhaka in May, but has yet to make another major signing, while the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea have both brought in several expensive reinforcements.

Manchester City are also closing in on a big-money deal for John Stones that could reach as much as £50 million, while United have agreed a record-breaking fee of €120m to buy Paul Pogba from Juventus, sources have told ESPN FC.

Wenger is still searching for a striker and a forward as the Gunners try to improve on their second-place finish with a first Premier League title since 2004. But the Frenchman has acknowledged that the money being spent by other clubs will make things a lot more difficult in the upcoming campaign.

“It’s a big ask, because when you look at the Premier League, every club is hugely ambitious,” Wenger said after Arsenal beat the MLS All-Stars 2-1 in San Jose, California.

“You look at the cheques that everybody signs and it’s quite scary. That’s what the Premier League is about at the moment.”

Wenger is entering the final year of his contract and is under huge pressure to deliver a big title. When asked if another top-four finish in the league — which he has delivered in all 20 of his previous seasons — would be enough this time, the Arsenal boss said: “It’s never enough. I personally believe that no matter what you do, it’s never enough.

“You have to give absolutely everything to take the best out of the team. I believe that we know what we have to do, because we were second last year, we had 18 teams behind us.”

The Gunners will have to make do without Per Mertesacker for several months after the centre-back sustained a serious knee injury and Wenger reiterated in an interview with ESPN that he still wants an offensive and a defensive signing before the end of the summer transfer window.

“We were a bit short on goals scored [last season], so we will try certainly to strengthen a little bit in that department,” Wenger said. “Defensively we need to bring some more experience into our squad. I think in the middle of the park we have enough players.”

Meanwhile Arsenal’s rivals continue to splash the cash.

Vladmir Putin Sends Attack Submarine Into English Waterways Just Days Before England vs Russia Clash At Euro 2016

Russian president Vladmir Putin has sent an attack submarine (kilo-class submarine Stary Oskol) armed with missiles and torpedoes into the English Channel, just days before England play Russia in the Euros according to a report by The Sun UK.

According to the report, the submarine will pass through the Dover Straits at 10am today.

England’s Royal Navy had intercepted the Russian submarine in the North Sea, and this action by the Russian president could spark a full blown out retaliation from NATO and the UN. It is not clear yet whether Putin was trying to intimidate England or if he was trying to attack the UK.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon was quick to hail the Royal Navy for snuffing out Putin’s latest attempt to intimidate the UK ahead of the Euros.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: “This shows that the Navy is maintaining a vigilant watch in international and territorial waters to keep Britain safe and protect us from potential threats.

Lampard: Why England Wasted My Partnership With Gerrard

The midfielder is still at a loss as to why him and the former Liverpool man failed to click for England, but says they were let down my a succession of managers

Frank Lampard admits he has regrets over his England career and his inability to form an effective midfield partnership with Steven Gerrard.

The pair – who now ply their trade in MLS for New York City FC and LA Galaxy respectively – were talismanic figures for Chelsea and Liverpool but didn’t click together at international level.

A succession of England managers failed to get the best out of the two men while playing in the same side, though Lampard believes more could have been done by the coaches he played under.

He told Sky Sports‘ ‘Monday Night Football‘: “I think there were times when they [England managers] could have done something different. I certainly would take personal responsibility if I don’t reach certain levels.

“I think there were times when we could have been managed better, there could have been a way to get the best out of us.

“When we were both in our prime playing regularly for Chelsea and Liverpool, scoring goals, being involved heavily, we went away with England sometimes and you’d play in a 4-4-2, Stevie’s asked to sit, Stevie’s on the left.

“I played with Capello for years in the holding role and I was never playing like that for Chelsea ever. There was something missing, I felt, when I look back at my England career.

“I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s because we play against each other every week and there’s little groups, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea.

“And when you’re Argentinian, and they are all playing all over the world, they come home, it’s a big family, and there’s a different spirit. I’m not sure we ever managed to get that togeth

Allardyce: I Deserved The England Job In 2006

The former West Ham manager believes he should have been preferred to Steve McClaren and revealed that he met with David Beckham to discuss the Three Lions position

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce thinks he warranted the job as England coach in 2006 and hopes to be among the contenders when the position becomes available again.

Allardyce, then in charge of Bolton Wanderers, was linked to the role following the exit of Sven-Goran Eriksson, but Steve McClaren was instead appointed by the Football Association (FA).

It is a decision which still frustrates the 60-year-old, who agreed to succeed Dick Advocaat as Sunderland manager on Friday, but he hopes to get another opportunity of leading the national team in the future.

In an extract from his autobiography, serialised by The Sun, Allardyce wrote: “I should have got it and, as I’m a better manager now than I was then, I believe I should be in the running whenever it comes round again.

“That’s not vanity or being full of my own importance. My track record entitles me to be considered.

“I’m ambitious and I still want the England job, but I have less chance now even though I’m better equipped to do it.”

The former Newcastle and West Ham boss revealed that he went as far as arranging a meeting with David Beckham, then a Real Madrid midfielder and the England captain, to discuss his desire for the position.

“David said ‘the next manager needs to have experience to handle Champions League and World Cup games’, but I didn’t agree,” he continued.

“I got on the front foot and asked David to lunch in Madrid … he could see I was serious and I think I left having convinced him I could do it.

“He said if anybody at the FA asked him about me he wouldn’t have a problem, but he didn’t think he would have a say.”

Guardiola Walks Out Of Bayern Munich Press Conference

The 44-year-old, whose contract expires next summer, has been linked with the England job but is currently reviewing an offer to remain with the Bundesliga champions

Pep Guardiola walked out of his Bayern Munich press conference on Friday after a reporter asked whether he could become England’s next manager.

An article in The Sun has claimed that the Football Association are targeting the 44-year-old as a potential successor for Roy Hodgson, who could leave his role after Euro 2016 if England’s campaign is a failure.

Guardiola’s future at Bayern has also been the subject of constant speculation as his contract with the Bundesliga champions expires at the end of the season.

But when asked if he would consider the role with England, Guardiola replied before leaving the room: “Come on, next question. Next question, please. No. I am the coach at Bayern Munich. Thank you.”

Earlier this week, Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed Guardiola is currently considering a “great offer” to stay with the club.

“I am optimistic about Pep’s renewal. We have a great offer on the table, which you cannot just shove aside,” Rummenigge told Bild.

“We have a first-class team, a fantastic club, a great stadium and a wonderful city to offer. We will have a serious conversation with Pep in the upcoming weeks and we will see what comes from that.

“I want to win the Champions League again – with Guardiola in charge.”

On The Ball : The Rise Of Dele Alli By Edward Okaro

In this piece, I’ll be talking a little bit about the two things I absolutely adore as an avid football/soccer fan:

(a)The Barclays Premier League (The most watched league in the world) and

(b) My beloved Nigerian National Men’s Football team (or the Super Eagles as they are fondly called)

The subject to which these two things are centred around is none other than promising Nigerian born starlet Bamidele ‘Dele’ Alli and I’ll be giving you the low-down on this precocious young talent.

WHO IS DELE ALLI?

Alli's outstanding season with MK Dons led to him being named young player of the year

Bamidele Jermaine ‘Dele’ Alli was born in the town of Milton Keynes on the 11th of April 1996, where he joined the youth setup of Milton Keynes Dons as an 11 year old. Such was his undoubtable talent that he broke into the first team five years later at the tender age of 16, during the 2012/2013 English Football League One season. He became a regular fixture in the team and had his most prolific spell in the 2014/2015 season, where he came into global reckoning with an inspired performance against Premier League Giants Manchester United in the Capital One Cup, a match which MK Dons won 4-0. This led to him being scouted constantly by some of the biggest clubs on the continent including the likes of Liverpool (the club he supported as a boy), Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur amongst others. Rumours even began circulating that Alli had been convinced to join Liverpool by Steven Gerrard, his idol. Speculation continued on where his future would lie until February 2015 when he signed for North London giants Tottenham Hotspur for £5 million. He was immediately loaned back to MK Dons where he continued to impress and ultimately helped his team to Promotion from the Football League One with an impressive return of 16 goals and 9 assists from midfield. Despite being only 19, Alli has gone from strength to strength and already has some noteworthy individual accolades to his name such as the Football League Young Player of the Month for August and January, Football League Young Player of the Year award for 2014/2015 and was named in the Football League One Team of the Year.

STYLE OF PLAY

Many comparisons have been drawn between Alli and his footballing idol, Liverpool Legend Steven Gerrard, because of his eye for a killer pass, quick thinking on the ball and impressive shooting ability. But the most noticeable attribute of this young man in the games I’ve seen him play is his work rate, his 39 League starts a testament to his remarkable stamina levels.

PROSPECTS

Alli secured a lucrative move to Tottenham Hotspur in January

On the club front, the future seems to be bright for the 19 year old, since Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino prides himself on bringing through young talents into his first team. You only need to look at the likes of Harry Kane, Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason who have seamlessly made the transition to the first team, with Kane and Mason being called up to the England senior squad this past season. On the international scene however, there still seems to be a bit of uncertainty over where his allegiance will lie considering that he is eligible for Nigeria through his father and for England through his mother. There are even rumours about Ex-Wimbledon striker John Fashanu, who is of Nigerian descent, contacting Alli about the possibility of him opting for Nigeria. Seeing as head coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, has in recent times placed his faith in talents from the diaspora (Williams Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun come to mind), don’t be too surprised to see him lining up in the green and white of Nigeria anytime soon……not that I or any other true fan of the Super Eagles would be complaining!!!
