Over 1,000 migrants attempt to jump high double fence between Morocco and Spain

More than 1,000 migrants tried to jump a high double fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Sunday in a violent assault that saw one officer lose an eye, local authorities said.

A group of 1,100 people from sub-Saharan Africa trying to reach Europe stormed the border fence just after 4 am (0300 GMT) on New Year’s Day in an “extremely violent and organised” way, said the central government’s representative office in Ceuta.

None however managed to get through, bar two who were badly injured and taken to hospital in Ceuta, the office said in a statement. A similar assault on December 9 saw more than 400 migrants enter the tiny enclave.

Five Spanish policemen and 50 members of the Moroccan forces were injured, including one who lost an eye, it said.

A Moroccan interior ministry statement said that of those members of the security forces who were hurt, 10 were in a serious condition.

Ceuta and Melilla, another Spanish territory in North Africa, have the European Union’s only land borders with Africa.

They are one of the entry points for African migrants seeking a better life in Europe, who get there by either climbing over the border fence, swimming along the coast or hiding in vehicles.

On Monday, a French national was arrested for trying to board a ferry out of Ceuta with a camper van where 12 Algerians were found hiding, “car sick and sweating,” police said.

According to local authorities, of the 1,100 migrants who stormed the border Sunday, just over 100 managed to climb up the external fence and stayed on top for hours.

Footage shot by the local Faro TV shows one man perched at the top of the six-metre (20-foot) high fence, sitting uncomfortably near rolls of barbed wire, his head hanging down onto his chest.

Eventually as darkness turns to light, he slowly climbs down to a space between both fences and lies down as a Spanish policeman fetches him a bottle of water before taking him to an entry back into Morocco.

Separately, coastguards said they had rescued 52 people who were packed onto a small boat at sea south of Malaga on Spain’s southern coast.

Falconets crash out of U-20 World Cup despite win against Spain.

Nigerian Under-20 female football team has crashed out of the FIFA World Cup in Papua New Guinea despite their victory over Spain in their last group game.

Chinwendu Ihezuo scored the winner in Port Moresby to secure all three points for Peter Dedevbo’s ladies but it wasn’t enough to see them through as they failed to overcome the goal difference deficit.

Coming into the final Group B clash, the Falconets knew result from the other game between Japan and Canada will determine their fate as victory would give them a chance of progressing to the quarter-final.

Nigeria needed a nine-goal swing to overtake Spain in second place, but were down after seven minutes when Alba Redondo scored from a poor Falconets’ defending.

The Falconets responded five minutes later, Charity Reuben nodded down a Nigerian corner, with Ihuoma Onyebuchi finding enough space and time to fire home from inside the penalty area.

The Europeans were left to rue that their misses as Ihezuo fired home 12 minutes from time, after a defensive mix-up between Carmen Menayo and Marta Cazalla.

Japan finished as Group B winner with six points after dismissing Canada 5-0 at the National Football Stadium, Port Moresby.

Japan, Spain and Nigeria were tied on 6 points each but the Asian giants and their European counterpart moved on in the competition with a superior goal difference over the Falconets.

Photos of 21 Nigerian Prostitutes Who were Beaten if they Didn’t Bring in €1,000 a day, Rescued By Police in Ibiza, Spain

A major operation carried out by the Spanish police in association with the Office of Criminal Investigation in Germany and Europol has led to rescue of 21 Nigerian prostitutes and the arrest of 24 suspects, including members of ‘Supreme Eiye Confraternity cult, in the exclusive districts of Ibiza, Spain.
The prostitutes, some as young as 16 were lured to the Spanish mainland with fake promises of jobs and then forced to work 14 hours a day. The were beaten with brooms and sticks if they didn’t bring in €1,000.
“The network captured very young victims among the lower classes of the major Nigerian cities, deceiving them with false job offers in Spain,”
“Once in our country, they were forced into prostitution in marathon days, being beaten if they did not earn the money demanded by the gang,” said a police spokesman.
Investigators said Ibiza was chosen for the summer because of the high influx of tourists, with the gang totalling controlling the streets of the exclusive areas. They were kept in one apartment and only allowed out occasionally to buy food or to keep an appointment with a client.
“If they didn’t earn 1,000 euros a day, they would be forced to kneel for hours and beaten with sticks and brooms,’ said the spokesman.
Police found that 17 women were forced to share one apartment of just 30 square metres, with three to four girls sleeping in one single bed. The vulnerable women were given employment offers ‘too good to refuse’ in view of their poor circumstances but once captured, were unable to escape. They were subjected to voodoo rituals and sworn to loyalty contracts under the threat of family members being killed.
The women were smuggled into Europe on boats and planes and were only told their job offer was false when they arrived in Spain.
They were then told they would have to pay up to 50,000 pounds to be freed and could do so through prostitution.
Those arrested included two women said to be the ringleaders who had ‘years of experience’ in recruiting vulnerable girls. Police said they took elaborate steps to avoid detection, often moving the women from house to house.
One of the gang was arrested in Germany where he had tried to hide and five others were found to be members of the 1960s cult called ‘Supreme Eiye Confraternity’.
The money earned from prostitution was sent to Nigeria via Madrid where a bar was used as the front. Seven properties were raided in Spain and Germany and 20 bank accounts blocked.

Spain Nominates #PanamaPapers Leak Minister For World Bank Job

The Spanish government brushed aside global concerns to name its former Industry Minister, Jose Manuel Soria, as the country’s proposed representative at the World Bank.

Mr. Soria’s nomination is coming despite being linked with an offshore company listed in the Panama papers leaks earlier this year.

Although he denied any wrongdoing, Mr. Soria was compelled to resign his appointment last April, apparently to forestall any negative backlash on Spain’s caretaker government, the conservative Popular Party (PP).

But, few months after, the Spanish government has sent his name as its nominee to be voted one of the 25 executive directors by the189 governors at the Washington-based Bretton Woods institution, the Economy Ministry said on Wednesday.

Mr. Soria was named in the Panama Papers leaks scandal with details about his relationship with U.K. Lines, an offshore firm owned by the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.

Gary Neville Opens Doors To Valencia Fans On First Day

New Valencia coach Gary Neville has taken a step towards endearing himself to the club’s fans by allowing supporters to watch his first full training session in charge on Monday. Neville was appointed on Wednesday, but watched on from the stands at the weekend as Valencia salvaged a 1-1 draw against European champions Barcelona under the caretaker charge of Voro and Gary’s brother Phil Neville.

Open training sessions which the fans can attend are a long-running tradition in Spanish football, but many clubs have scaled back the practice in recent seasons seeking greater privacy to prepare for games. Indeed, Valencia hadn’t had an open training session for nearly a year and the news was warmly welcomed by fans on social media.

Neville’s first game in charge is on Wednesday as Valencia look to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in three years. The Spanish side need to beat Lyon at home and hope Belgian champions Gent fail to beat the already qualified Zenit St Petersburg.

Spain To Play Belgium In November Friendly

The Euro 2012 champions will prepare for the tournament in France with an added match against Marc Wilmots’ side

European champions Spain will step up their preparations for Euro 2016 with an international friendly againstBelgium in November.

Spain will travel to Belgium on November 17, four days after hosting England in Alicante.

Spain and Belgium have qualified for next year’s European Championships in France after topping their respective groups.

Next month’s fixture will be the first meeting between Spain and Belgium since 2009.

David Silva and David Villa scored braces as Spain routed Belgium 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier.

Belgium have not beaten Spain since their quarter-final penalty shoot-out win at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

David De Gea Called Up To Spain Squad

The goalkeeper has earned a spot, despite not playing for Manchester United this season, while Juan Mata and Diego Costa return.

David de Gea has been called up to the Spain squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers next month, despite being frozen out of the Manchester United side.

De Gea has not featured for the Red Devils since midway through their pre-season preparations, with manager Louis van Gaal refusing to field the goalkeeper while speculation persists over a transfer to Real Madrid.

However, the 24-year-old has been handed a spot in Vicente del Bosque’s squad to face Macedonia and Slovakia, along with United team-mate Juan Mata.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa also earns a place after regaining full fitness, but Juventus forward Alvaro Morata has been overlooked.

“We are very confident in Diego Costa, that’s why he is here,” Del Bosque said to reporters.

“Thiago excites us, we think he’ll be our future.

“[Cesar] Azpilicueta is getting continuity in the starting XI, we trust him. We can use him as central or wide player.

“Mata has been with us for almost forever. He’s here for the competition in the team.”

Spain host Slovakia on September 5 before facing Macedonia away three days later.

Spain squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Porto), David de Gea (Manchester United), Sergio Rico (Sevilla)

Defenders: Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos (both Real Madrid), Gerard Pique, Marc Bartra (both Barcelona), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Jordi Alba (Barcelon), Bernat (Bayern Munich)

I Was Right To Leave Liverpool For Barcelona, Admits Suarez

The former Reds striker left the club last summer and, after winning four major honours since his arrival at Camp Nou, he is sure that he made the correct choice to move to Spain

Luis Suarez says that winning the treble in his first season at Barcelona more than justified his decision to leave Liverpool last summer.

Suarez made the switch from Anfield to Camp Nou last August and was immediately rewarded with silverware as Barca swept the board last term.

Luis Enrique’s side added the Uefa Super Cup to their bulging trophy cabinet on Tuesday, meaning Suarez has now won four major honours in a little over 12 months at the club – a feat that convinced the Uruguayan a move away from Anfield was definitely the right option.

Speaking to Sport360, Suarez revealed: “It was the right decision [to sign for Barca].”

“Winning trophies was a part of my decision in joining Barcelona, but also as a family we knew it was the right decision even before I won a trophy.

“I am very happy at Barcelona – I am at the best club in the world.

“It couldn’t have gone better, to achieve what we did in my first season was a dream.”

And Suarez is eager to replicate last season’s success.

He added: “If you look at some of the players here they have won trophies season after season, and that is my aim now.

“We enjoyed our moment last season, but now it is about a new challenge.”

Eight Year Old Ivorian Boy Smuggled To Spain In Suitcase (SEE PHOTO)

Police found an eight-year-old Ivorian boy hidden in a suitcase that was smuggled across the border into Spanish territory in north Africa, an official said on Friday.

A 19-year-old woman took the case through a pedestrian crossing from Morocco into the small Spanish-governed territory of Ceuta on Thursday, a spokesman for the Civil Guard police force said. “When they put the suitcase through the scanner, the operator noticed something strange, which seemed to be a person inside the case,” he told AFP.

“When it was opened they found a minor, in a terrible state.”

The boy said he was eight years old and from Ivory Coast, according to the spokesman. The Civil Guard arrested the woman, who was due to go before a judge.

They also arrested the boy’s father when he tried to cross the border a few hours later. The father is Ivorian and lives in Spain’s Canary Islands.

Thousands of migrants each year risk their lives trying to enter Ceuta and another Spanish territory bordering Morocco, Melilla, in search of a better life in Europe.

Many Africans try to scramble over the seven-metre (23-foot) fences that separate the Spanish cities from Morocco. Others smuggle themselves over the border hidden in vehicles and cargoes or try to swim or sail from shores on the Moroccan side.

Earlier this week a 23-year-old Moroccan was found in a shipping container in the port of Melilla. He was dehydrated after four days cooped up without food or water, since the container was left unattended over the May holiday weekend.

Spain Ebola Patient at ‘Serious Risk’ of Dying

A Spanish nurse who is the first person known to have been infected with Ebola outside Africa is at “serious risk” of dying after her condition worsened Thursday, officials said.

Teresa Romero, 44, is “very ill and her life is at serious risk as a consequence of the virus,” Madrid’s regional president Ignacio Gonzalez told parliament.

A spokeswoman for the La Paz-Carlos III hospital where Romero is being treated told reporters: “Her clinical situation has deteriorated but I can’t provide more information,” on the patient’s request.

Romero helped treat two elderly Spanish missionaries who died after returning from west Africa with Ebola in August and September. She tested positive for the disease on Monday.

Her case has heightened concerns that the worst epidemic of Ebola on record could spread from west Africa, where it began late last year. It has since killed nearly 3,900 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Ebola Victims may Include Dog in Spain

Ebola’s victims may include a dog named Excalibur. Officials in Madrid got a court order to euthanize the pet of a Spanish nursing assistant with Ebola because of the chance the animal might spread the disease.

DOG

At least one major study suggests that dogs can be infected with the deadly virus without having symptoms. But whether or how likely they are to spread it to people is less clear.

Lab experiments on other animals suggest their urine, saliva or stool might contain the virus. That means that in theory, people might catch it through an infected dog licking or biting them, or from grooming.

“Clearly we want to look at all possibilities. We have not identified this as a means of transmission,” said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The nursing assistant and her husband have been in isolation since she tested positive for Ebola earlier this week. She was part of team at a Madrid hospital that cared for a missionary priest who died of Ebola.

The Madrid regional government got a court order to euthanize their dog, saying “available scientific information” can’t rule out it could spread the virus.

The dog’s owners don’t want it killed. Carlos Rodriguez, a Spanish veterinarian and host of a talk show about animals, said the husband messaged him from the hospital, trying to grant him temporary custody of the mixed-breed dog.

But now that there is a court order, “I can’t stop this happening,” Rodriguez said. The husband “asked me, crying, to at least make sure the animal does not suffer.”

The Spanish animal rights group Animal Equality complained that authorities wanted to “sacrifice the animal without even diagnosing it or considering the possibility of placing it in quarantine.”

It’s not clear how effective quarantine would be, since infected dogs don’t show symptoms and it’s not known how long the virus can last in them, or how long tests would have to be done to check for it.

Dr. Peter Cowen, a veterinarian at North Carolina State University who has advised global health experts on animal infection disease risks, says killing the dog is “clearly an overreaction.”

“I think it’s very unfortunate they are thinking of euthanizing that dog. They should really study it instead,” he said. “Ebola has never been documented to be spread by a dog,” and that’s clearly not a major route of spread in the outbreak in Africa, he said.

Ebola’s source in nature hasn’t been pinpointed. The leading suspect is a certain type of fruit bat, but the World Health Organization lists chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines as possibly playing a role in spread of the disease. Even pig farms may amplify infection because of bats on farms.

The possibility of spread by dogs — at least in Africa — was raised by a 2005 report. Researchers tested dogs during the 2001-2002 Ebola outbreak in Gabon after seeing some of them eating infected dead animals. Of the 337 dogs from various towns and villages, 9 percent to 25 percent showed antibodies to Ebola, a sign they were infected or exposed to the virus.

“I think it’s possible” that dogs might spread Ebola, but it’s not likely in the U.S. or other places where dogs aren’t near corpses or eating infected animals, said Sharon Curtis Granskog, a spokeswoman for the American Veterinary Medical Association.

In Dallas, health officials are monitoring 48 people who may have had contact with Ebola patient Thomas Duncan, but “we are not monitoring any animals at this time,” said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services.
