I don’t know my true age – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday admitted he did not know his true age.

He said his late mother merely told him she gave birth to him on a market day.

Mr. Obasanjo said this on Thursday at the 2017 International Youth Variety Day and Public Presentation of Olusegun Obasanjo’s Books for Children, as part of programmes for his 80th birthday.

The programme, organised by the Centre for Human Security, with the theme “Presidential Libraries Will Reduce Leadership Deficit in Africa”, held at theater hall of the Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

Mr. Obasanjo said while growing up, he had the challenge of knowing his real date of birth, because his parents were illiterates.

“At early stage in my life, I had the challenge of knowing my date of birth, and my peers always asked, while in return I persisted in asking my mother, who was an illiterate and had no records,” he said.

The former president added that when he continued to pressure his mother, the information he was given by his was that she gave birth to him on an Ifo village market day.

“When I continued to put pressure on my mother, she told me that she was preparing to go to market on the said day, and went into labour, and before others could return from the market, she had given birth to me,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

The former leader said he arrived at his current age when he considered the ages of some of his peers at the time.

“I’m not as lucky as some of my peers who know the dates of their birth. What matters to me is that I have chosen a date. If I don’t even know the exact date of my birth, at least I know my age group,” he emphasised.

The former president also spoke about morality in the society, lamenting that the era of genuine morality was fading, but needed to be revived in the interest of all and sundry.

“When we were growing up, if people doubt the source of your wealth, you will be ostracised. If your father goes out every night, the conclusion would be that your father is a thief, and if a family is seen and known to have engaged in crimes, the community will keep its distance from such family. All those values are gone, and how do we bring them back?” he said.

On the Presidential Library, Mr. Obasanjo said its benefits would be for both the young and the old.

Drama as PDP asks Supreme Court to sack Gov Ayade over false age declaration

A drama played out at the Supreme Court, yesterday, as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, asked the apex court to remove Governor Benedict Ayade of Cross River State from office over allegation that he falsified his age.
The party, through its lawyer, Mr. N. Ibegbulam, told the apex court headed by Justice Bode Rhodes Vivour that it was in support of an appeal by Mr. Joe Agi, SAN, against Ayade. Agi who is also a chieftain of the PDP in Cross River State had in his appeal, insisted that Governor Ayade lied about his age.
The appellant who came second in the governorship primary election of the PDP, held in the state on December 8, 2014, adduced exhibits before the court showing that Governor Ayade had in three different affidavits that were deposed to on oath, supplied conflicting dates as his year of birth.
Specifically, the evidence before the court showed that the 3rd respondent (Ayade) had in the Nomination Form, Code PD 003/G, which he used to contest the Cross River State election, stated on oath that he was born on March 2, 1969. However, the age declaration he attached to the form, which his brother Frank Ayade swore to before a Cross River State High Court sitting at Oleh on February 1, 2007, indicated that the defendant was born in 1968.
Moreover, the plaintiff tendered in evidence, a document that showed that the governor, while applying for admission into the University of Ibadan, gave an age declaration stating that he was born on March 2, 1966. The bio-data was allegedly issued by the University itself.
Meanwhile, when the matter came up for hearing yesterday, the, PDP, told the apex court that it was satisfied that Ayade violated its Electoral Guidelines by furnishing it with wrong data about his age. Ibegbulam said, “My Lords, after due consideration, we apply to concede to this appeal and consequently apply to withdraw the 1st respondent’s brief of argument dated May 17.
“We urge your lordships to find merit in the appeal and apply Article 14(b) and 15(2) of the PDP Electoral Guidelines which disqualifies any candidate that gives false age declaration.”After listening to the parties, the apex court reserved its judgment till December 9.

This Is The Ideal Age Difference In A Relationship

They say age ain’t nothing but a number if you really love each other, but are certain age gaps — or lack thereof — more likely to end in tears? According to a study conducted by Emory University in Atlanta, there’s an ideal difference that can heighten your chances of a lasting relationship.

The study looked at 3,000 people and found that the greater the age gap, the greater the risk of a breakup. These are just patterns, but the results could come down to partners having conflicting goals and interests at different stages in their lives.

Researchers found that couples with a five-year age gap are 18 percent more likely to split than an equal-age couple, while that figure jumped to 39 percent with a 10-year age gap. For couples with a 20-year age gap, the statistics aren’t looking very hopeful, with chances of separation rising to 95 percent.

As for that ideal age difference, researches believe that a one-year gap is the sweet spot, with the chances of divorce standing at a much smaller 3 percent.

Still, as we said, this is just data, and, while researchers may have noticed patterns, every couple is different and other factors — like children, behavior, and plain old compatibility — can impact the results also.

As Hugo Mialon, one of the researchers behind the study, said: “It could just be that the types of couples with those characteristics are the types of couples who are, on average, more likely to divorce for other reasons.”

Democracy Has Come Of Age In Africa- Osinbajo

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said that with the conduct of peaceful elections and transitions from one government to the other on the continent, it was clear that democracy had come of age in Africa.

A news release issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Mr Laolu Akande, in Abuja on Tuesday said Osinbajo made the remark in Conakry, Guinea, at the inauguration of Prof. Alpha Conde’s second term in office.

“It shows that democracy has come of age in Africa. All over, you can see the demonstration of peaceful elections, peaceful transitions from one government to another”, the Vice President said.

According to the release, Osinbajo, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the ceremony attended by several African presidents and leaders, noted that peaceful elections were producing right leaders on the continent.

He explained that the conduct of peaceful elections in African countries “point to the fact that democratic elections in Africa could produce leadership in the right way,” stressing that “we are seeing that everywhere in Africa.”

While lauding the leadership of the Guinean President and congratulating the people, Prof. Osinbajo described President Conde as “a great leader, a person who has committed himself to developing his people; a leadership that focuses on development of infrastructure and human capital”.

Couple Unhappy Because People Refer To Them As Father And Daughter

74-year old Keith and 34-year old Michaela have told how they are often mistaken for father and daughter because of the staggering age difference between them. The pair met five years ago and Michaela says she is madly in love.

“I had always been interested in older men and Keith was just my type. We’re just the same as any other couple, but admittedly Keith does get mistaken for my dad when we’re out,” Michaela said.

Keith is equally as besotted; “When we met I was 68, which was the same age as Michaela’s dad, but I didn’t find it strange, I didn’t care about age, I was attracted to her and that was all that mattered.”

In all her family supported her, despite her husband being the age mate of her father. She said; “When I introduced Keith to my family, I knew they’d be supportive as I’d dated older men in the past. I wasn’t surprised that my dad, was really happy that I’d found such a gentleman.”

The only problem they however find embarrassing is people referring to Michaela as Keith’s daughter.

“Patience Jonathan Is As Old As Buhari But Hiding It With Make-Up” – Borno Women Blast Patience Jonathan

Retired female civil servants in Borno State have launched a scathing attack at the first lady, Patience Jonathan, over her broadsides on former military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari, and her comments regarding the violence in northern Nigeria.
The women, under the Forum for Retired Female Civil Servants in Borno State, particularly expressed outrage over Mrs. Jonathan’s repeated attacks on Mr. Buhari, who is the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, President Goodluck Jonathan’s major challenger.
The women pointed at Mrs. Jonathan’s description of Mr. Buhari, 72, as a “brain-dead” old man.
The women said Mrs. Jonathan has no reason taunting the former general as she could be older, if she wears no make-up.
“Patience Jonathan is saying that Buhari is an old man and recently they stoned the convoy of Buhari’s wife. If Buhari is old, I believe that Patient Jonathan is not any younger than Buhari to say
the fact because as a woman, we know how women hide their age behind make ups to look younger, therefore, we are saying enough is enough,” said Aishatu Ngulde, who spoke on behalf of the Forum.
The women said they decided to speak out because they had become irritated by the personality attacks by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
“We are here today because we have been pushed to the walls and anyone that is pushed to the walls has to react.
“They say we gave birth to children and throw them on the streets to become Boko Haram,” the women said.
The group also accused the wife of the president of not showing concern to the plight of Borno women, thousands of whom have become widows or have lost their children due to the ongoing Boko Haram conflict.
”The First Lady has never come to Borno state but we have seen her supporting even other countries; never has she come to see for herself what the Borno people are actually passing through. She only sits in Abuja and passes judgement on what she knows nothing about.”

GMB: Is Age Really a Problem?

I have heard of different propaganda against GMB but the particular one i will like to treat here is that of his age. They say GMB is too old to lead Nigeria. The only question I will like to ask them is is GEJ presently offloading dangote cement trailer or laying NNPC pipeline that requires Energy in Aso-rock that could justify such statement???

The Prof. that supervised my postgraduate project is over 70 and was able to bring out the best in me through my work. My external supervisor attested this by saying “this is a Ph.D work submitted by a masters student” He would wake me up in the middle of the night and early in the morning to remind me of his ultimatums and would always read every page of any work he gives you no matter how voluminous they may be. Most of the young lectures don’t either have time or energy to function so closely to this man. Won’t it be an injustice to then compare this old man with the young ones who I cant’ really ascertain their level of productivity?

I also met a man in 2007 who was close to 70 at that time and was contesting for a seat in the senate. He had a well documented and printed blue print for his mission in the senate with all the statistics there to back it up. He happened to be the only legislator I have seen to have a well prepared plan for their mission since I have been following politics. Unlike a lot of those who just come and blow grammar to deceive us.

These two scenarios are enough to prove to us that age shouldn’t be enough to discard the best brains around. Let’s look at what anyone has to irrespective of the age, tribe or religion.

We all know what Buhari is bringing on board at this crucial time of our existence as a nation is to fight corruption which is about 80% of the reason our country is travelling backwards. He may not have the swaggs, good oratory skill or exposure as some people will say (incidentally GEJ doesnt have either of them all). We can all get them as bonus from his aides and cabinet members. Even the Bible said “seek ye first the kingdom of God and all other things shall be added unto thee”
For me and my family we are with Buhari this time around not with GEJ as we did in 2011.
