What Professor Osinbajo Told Me On His 60th Birthday – Bolu Akindele

This whole episode started when Kiki Osinbajo called me that evening. I rushed through my meal and finally picked the call the second time it rang. You see, there’s this thing with our conversations that just makes us keep talking on and on such that we never get fed up of it. From one issue to another and before you say Jack, we would have talked for almost an hour. So, now you understand the reason why I had to finish the meal before answering the call.

As usual, we went on and on with the gist and after some time of whining her about the political life, discussing some other pressing issues like the project we’re both working on, and giving reports of how far we had gone individually in pursuit of career fulfilment, she finally brought up the issue of her Popsy’s birthday. Her Popsy needs no introduction. If you couldn’t recognize her surname alone, I don’t know what to do with you. The exciting thing about her father’s birthday coming up in our discussion was that I had been given a special VIP invite to attend the special family and friends worship session at their home. Not only that, I was attending not as a photographer but as a guest. To say that I was excited is an understatement, I was extremely elated.

As much as I’m a regular friend of the family, I had only met Prof. Osinbajo a few times and it was understandable – his busy schedule. The first time we met one on one was when we both shared the stage to speak at one United Nations Symposium in 2015 and the other was when I had to photograph his grandson’s 1st birthday in 2016 but at those times, I couldn’t really say we met because we didn’t exchange much words. Just a few pleasantries here and there. So, now you know why this was such a big deal for me.

Right there on the phone, I had began to plan my clothing and flight arrangements as the Abuja airport had been scheduled for closure on Tuesday and all other logistics. Interestingly, Kiki had made arrangements for my accommodation at their house. That lady is just bae!

After a few minutes of her whining me about my new haircut (which I don’t want to talk about now), the loss of my phone and some other random things, we ended the call and I began my planning in earnest.

I arrived Abuja on Monday and I could literally feel the excitement in the air. There was so much buzz internally about it. I could literally feel 60 myself. Maybe it was because I’m practically a part of the family or maybe not!

Wednesday came so fast and we all gathered in the morning at the living room as planned. The worship was really tight! Unscripted and very real. You could check a few clips on kiki osinbajo’s IG handle @kikiosinbajo. I couldn’t do any updates cuz I was super electrified with the session. I just decided to enjoy and savour the moment while it lasted.

After about 45 minutes, Grandma (Prof’s mother) took centre stage. First, with her surprise cake and her many Yoruba choruses of thanksgiving to God and then she prayed for her son. In a couple of minutes, Prof himself admonished us all and it was all done, he had some other things to do. Prof left us in the living room whilst the rest of us continued in the celebration.

Then….

“Bolu!”

I could tell my heart skipped like 5 beats.

He called me again and this time was so sure it was Prof that called me. I wanted to enter the ground. I didn’t even know that he knew my name.

Was I expecting it?

Never!!!

How I walked down the stairs I can’t remember. All I can recollect now is that I met him down the stairs and errr.. I remember stealing glances at Kiki. She could see my nervousness clearly and was just having a good time smiling.

He held my hands and we walked into his room. He explained how that he had always saw the need to engage me in a discussion after we shared the stage at The UN symposium. Since my glasses were on, it was easy to dodge his eyes a couple of times. I was clearly shy. I looked around the room. It was massive. If this could be the other room, Buari talked about I think I want to remain in the other room abeg. It was a combination of both class and taste.

One word from him and I was back to reality.

He started by encouraging me not to give up on Nigeria. He shared some secrets of some of the things he currently envisions about Nigeria and our position globally. He clearly stated that it was of essence that I don’t give up on Nigeria and also carry this message to as many people as I could and ensure that they believe in the nation and do all that they can in their capacity to move Nigeria forward.

He also told me to build capacity now that I have the chance to do so. Reading books, listening to people of value, strengthening my relationship with God, Spending more time working rather than having fun are just a few ways of building capacity and ensuring that I am fully prepared for the future. He specifically said something about a transfer of the mantle of leadership to the youths and how that many of us young people who are clamouring for positions of leadership still aren’t fully prepared for what’s coming ahead hence the need for us to go back to our closets and grow deep.

He told me leadership isn’t always about the number one person. At this point, he smiled and then expressed his pleasure at how much work I was doing in this respect. He said he had read about 3 of my articles where I talked extensively on this and how it was necessary to rub this mindset into the heart of every young person. At this point, I glanced up into his eyes, my mouth hanging agape in wonder. That Osinbajo reads my blog posts came as a surprise to me. That meant that I was of course doing something right.

He told me to value my wife. He explained how valuable this instruction is if I would hold it very dear to me. He said people never know that the strength his wife possess has carried him thus far in his life. He stated clearly that it’s important to choose very wisely as that decision could make or mar ones destiny.

He also told me to respect the people ahead of me. To cherish, value and honor them with all of my heart.

He enlightened me on the need to pour all of my being into whatever my hand finds to do and be very diligent and skilled at it.

He moved on to share some other things but space wouldn’t allow me to share. He stretched out his hand and reached out for mine, closed his eyes and began to pray. I felt strength, freshness and peace all around me as he did this.

It was at this point during the prayer that I heard faint footsteps of movement which later became louder and louder till I finally opened my eyes.

It was my big sister leaving home for work and her movements in the house woke me from my sleep!

Spoiler!!

You see, this might just be one of my dreams but I still won’t forget what Prof. told me in the room. I’d hold them very firm to my heart and work hard to see these virtues at work in my own life

It doesn’t matter what anyone says, I met prof yesterday.

PS: It would also be nice if you took a cue or two from what prof. told me during his 60th birthday because of a truth, they are values I have learnt from his life.

VIDEO: Nigeria’s acting president serenades self on birthday

On the occasion of his 60th birthday, Nigeria’s acting president Yemi Osinbajo took a break from his busy schedule to serenade himself with an Igbo worship song alongside his wife, Dolapo.

In a footage posted on his Twitter page, Osinbajo is seen singing ‘Aka Jehovah’ by Gabriel Eziashi.

“Thank you everyone, for your kind words, I am humbled. I am grateful to God for 60 years. There is no me without Him. Saved by Grace alone,” he said in a message accompanying the footage.

This is not the first time Osinbajo will display his love for music publicly. In December 2016, he led a choir including former president Olusegun Obasanjo and military ruler Yakubu Gowon in a rendition of the 18th century hymn “O God Our Help in Ages Past”. The adventure was greeted with a mixed receptions.

Meanwhile, Osinbajo is expected to pay an official visit to Sokoto on Thursday.

While in Sokoto, the Acting President will take part in a two-day clinic organised for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), which is being hosted by the Sokoto State Government.

“During the events, the Acting President will hold interactive sessions with government agencies, financial institutions, operators and stakeholders in the MSME’s sub-sector, ” said Imam Imam, Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs to Sokoto State governor.

I don’t know my true age – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday admitted he did not know his true age.

He said his late mother merely told him she gave birth to him on a market day.

Mr. Obasanjo said this on Thursday at the 2017 International Youth Variety Day and Public Presentation of Olusegun Obasanjo’s Books for Children, as part of programmes for his 80th birthday.

The programme, organised by the Centre for Human Security, with the theme “Presidential Libraries Will Reduce Leadership Deficit in Africa”, held at theater hall of the Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

Mr. Obasanjo said while growing up, he had the challenge of knowing his real date of birth, because his parents were illiterates.

“At early stage in my life, I had the challenge of knowing my date of birth, and my peers always asked, while in return I persisted in asking my mother, who was an illiterate and had no records,” he said.

The former president added that when he continued to pressure his mother, the information he was given by his was that she gave birth to him on an Ifo village market day.

“When I continued to put pressure on my mother, she told me that she was preparing to go to market on the said day, and went into labour, and before others could return from the market, she had given birth to me,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

The former leader said he arrived at his current age when he considered the ages of some of his peers at the time.

“I’m not as lucky as some of my peers who know the dates of their birth. What matters to me is that I have chosen a date. If I don’t even know the exact date of my birth, at least I know my age group,” he emphasised.

The former president also spoke about morality in the society, lamenting that the era of genuine morality was fading, but needed to be revived in the interest of all and sundry.

“When we were growing up, if people doubt the source of your wealth, you will be ostracised. If your father goes out every night, the conclusion would be that your father is a thief, and if a family is seen and known to have engaged in crimes, the community will keep its distance from such family. All those values are gone, and how do we bring them back?” he said.

On the Presidential Library, Mr. Obasanjo said its benefits would be for both the young and the old.

Omoyele Sowore Celebrates His 46th Birthday In Front Of Police Station [Pictures]

Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore celebrated his 46th birthday yesterday.

However, the most interesting twist to the celebration is that Sowore’s invitation to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) yesterday coincided with his birthday.

Sowore had been invited to the SCID for an ‘interview’ which was later aborted as the Police Station reportedly lost one of it’s officers.

However, Sowore’s supporters decided to celebrate his birthday right in front of the police station. The police had no alternative but to cope with all the revolutionary singing that followed. Some of the police officers looked considerably embarrassed as Sowore and his throng of supporters celebrated away.

Pope turns down early 80th birthday wishes, says, “They bring bad luck”

Pope Francis on Wednesday quipped that people should not send him early birthday wishes because, in his native Argentina, doing so brings bad luck.

Francis turns 80 on Saturday. For the occasion, the Vatican has opened seven email accounts that can receive birthday messages in Latin, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, German and Polish.

“I thank you all for the wishes for my upcoming birthday, thanks a lot.

“But let me tell you something that will make you laugh: In my country early birthday wishes bring bad luck,’’ the pontiff said during his weekly audience.

Meeting the faithful in the Vatican’s Paul VI’s hall, Francis was presented with a cake from a woman.

It had two lit candles, one in the shape of an “8” and another in the shape of a “0” the pope blew them out.

Oscar Pistorius celebrates 30th birthday in prison.

Oscar Pistorius celebrated his 30th birthday in a new, more comfortable jail as his family insist “some amazing things are happening for him”.

The shamed athlete last month won his claim to be moved from to a newly-refurbished, “more relaxed” prison, aimed at “low risk, non violent offenders” and disabled inmates, where he is surrounded by acres of lush gardens and trees.

As part of his rehabilitation programme, Pistorius will be expected to grow vegetables and work in the orchards, according to a top lawyer with knowledge of the prison.

“It is the ideal place for Oscar,” a family source revealed. “It is all on one level, so he can move around easily, and the bathroom facilities are now much less dangerous for him.

“There are some worthwhile programmes of all kinds on offer and some amazing things are happening for him. He is in the ideal place for where he needs to be at the moment.”

Last week, the South African double amputee – who is serving six years for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp – quietly marked his landmark birthday at Atteridgeville Correctional Centre, in Pretoria, where bags of cards and letters arrived.

Many of them were sent to his family who live only a few miles away.

The prison, which has undergone a multi-million pound facelift and boasts upgraded bathrooms for disabled inmates, is described as “more family like atmosphere” by defence lawyer Llewellyn Curlewis, who visits regularly.

In Case You Missed Beyoncé’s Birthday Gift To Her Fans, Watch This!

Beyoncé can’t stop sharing the love even on her birthday! The “Formation” singer celebrated her 35th birthday on Sunday by surprising fans with the release of her Lemonade track “Hold Up” on YouTube.

The video, which was previously only available to Tidal subscribers, premiered in April as part of her new LP’s visual album, but now every fan can watch it on repeat online.

LOL! You Won’t Believe What This 105-Year-Old Woman Requested For Her Birthday

After 105 years on this planet, all Ivena “Ivy” Smailes wanted for her birthday was a bunch of “hunky firefighters” to sweep her off her feet — and that’s exactly what she got.

Thanks to the crew over at Addison Court Care Home in Crawcrook, England, Smailes was surrounded by 40 friends and family members along with five gorgeous firefighters from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service for her birthday last week. One of them even climbed through her window as an added surprise!

“[Ivy] sends us little challenges for her birthday every year and this year she asked for firemen,” one of the facility’s workers Debra Carter told ABC News. “We had the local fire brigade come … through the third floor balcony window. They were more than happy to help!”

Smailes says the experience was “out of this world” — and now that she knows what she can get away with, she’s even started planning for a bigger and better party for her 106th.

“She’s already said that next year she wants to meet Prince Harry,” Carter added.

OMG! See What Tyga Bought For Kylie On Her Birthday

Newly-blonde Kylie Jenner was given a white Ferrari by her boyfriend/husband/fiancé whatever for her 18th birthday.

The reality TV star celebrated her birthday with a knees-up at The Nice Guy in LA with friends and family, including rapper Tyga who Kylie is rumoured to be dating or could possibly be MARRIED to. We certainly think this pressie confirms that something is going on between them.

The party then moved on to another LA venue, Bootsy Bellows where Tyga took the opportunity to present Kylie with his little gift worth a mere $320,000 (about £200,000 in British speak) that was wrapped in a red ribbon. Aw, bless.

Understandably, Kylie was stunned but got over her shock to take it for a little spin with her mum, Kris Jenner.

According to the Daily Mail who deferred to car lovers mag Auto Express for Ferrari facts, the posh car has a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox that “shifts in the blink of an eye”.

Wow, we love nothing better than a fast-moving seven-speed clutch gearbox. And neither does Kylie by the looks of it.

And that’s not all: “The standard ceramic brakes deliver massive stopping power.” Nothing says love like massive stopping power.

Buhari Calls Obasanjo ‘True Statesman, Nationalist’ on Birthday

General, Muhammadu Bahari has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a courageous patriot, who tells the truth when he is convinced that leaders are going wrong. In a statement he issued through Garba Shehu, his campaign media director, Buhari said the former president “is a nationalist whose commitment to democracy and good governance are worthy of recognition and praise”.

Buhari acknowledged that, although Obasanjo is widely perceived as controversial, such perception should not overshadow his patriotism and remarkable courage to speak up when things go wrong in the county.

Buhari described Obasanjo “as a true statesman and nationalist who doesn’t abandon his country when it needs his voice to jolt the conscience of leaders to listen to those they govern”.
