Suspension of ASUU members not to victimise union – AAUA

The authorities of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, has said that the recent suspension of some lecturers in the institution is not aimed at suppressing the labour unions in the institution.

The lecturers, who were leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, AAUA chapter, were suspended a few weeks ago for allegedly disturbing the peace of the institution.

The affected ASUU members include the chairman of the institution’s branch of ASUU, Dr. Sola Fayose; the immediate past Chairman, Dr. Busuyi Mekusi; Vice-Chairman, Dr. Dorcas Alase, and Assistant Secretary of the union, Dr. Sola Olorunfemi, as well as one ex-officio member.

In a statement issued by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Michael Ayeerun, on Monday, the institution said that it took the action as part of its routine administrative procedure aimed at restoring sanity and order.

The statement read in part, “The suspended lecturers were disciplined because they went round the campus disrupting normal academic activities, and prevented others from carrying out their assigned academic and administrative duties and not because they were mostly members of the executives of the local chapter of the ASUU, as being insinuated in some quarters.

“They were suspended in line with the extant laws of the university after a head of department and a dean of faculty wrote to the management alleging physical and verbal assaults on them and the disruption of their departmental and faculty board meetings by the suspended lecturers.”

PDP National Caucus Endorses Move To Reconcile Members

The extended national caucus of  PDP has endorsed the peace move by the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee to reconcile with the disputed National Chairman of the party, Alhaji  Ali Modu Sheriff and his faction.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen after the party’s caucus meeting.

Adeyeye said that the purpose of the meeting was to brief the caucus on the move and get its endorsement.

The caucus is made up of PDP governors, National Assembly caucus, Board of Trustees and other stakeholders.

“Members of the caretaker committee are not there on their own, they were appointed by the party and they have to carry the party along in all they are doing.

“The peace move has been finally endorsed and supported by members of caucus without any dissent voice,” he said.

Adeyeye, however, said there were no factions in the party but aggrieved members.

“We don’t have factions in PDP. There are some of our members who are aggrieved.

“We are making moves to ensure peace in the party,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls  that Makarfi and Sheriff in September expressed determination to settle the party leadership crisis.

The peace committee is expected to be inaugurated on Monday to reunite the party.

[Video] Boko Haram Members Praying In Large Numbers

Members of Boko Haram under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau has released a video showing thousands of its members praying during recently concluded Eid ceremony; the militant group showed members in three separate praying grounds in Borno and the Lake Chad area.

However, the leader of the faction, Shekau was conspicuously missing in the video. The group used the opportunity to threaten President Muhammadu Buhari, insisting its members are still many and remain resilient despite the military action that killed scores of its foot soldiers and reclaimed Nigerian territory under its control.

Military Arrest 3 Suspected Niger Delta Avengers Members

The Nigerian Military has announced the arrest of three suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) believed to have carried out the August 8 attack on the military check point in Nembe in which four soldiers were killed.

The soldiers attached to Operation Delta Safe were all killed and the suspected NDA members made away with their gun boats, arms and ammunition.
The attack was said to have irked the Defence Headquarters and the ODS was directed to launch a manhunt for the killers and ensure their arrest to bring them to justice.
According to investigations, intelligence gathering by the ODS led troops to the hideout of the suspected militants at Okiama community in Okigbene clan  Southern Ijaw local government area.
Though the raid did not yield the desired results, as the suspected militants had escaped, ODS troops recovered some items including military accoutrements.
On Monday, troops following the trail provided by intelligence officers intercepted the suspected militants at Epebu community also in Southern Ijaw local government area, and after a gun duel that lasted for about an hour, two of the militants including the leader was killed while three of them were arrested.
Commander of ODS Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, in press briefing to parade the suspected militants, disclosed that large quantities of arms and ammunition and the gun boat that was stolen from the military check point in Nembe were recovered.
9 AK 47 rifles, 1 FN rifle, 4 HK 21 MGs, one G3 MG,  3  GPMGs, 20  AK 47 magazines, 2  G3 magazines, 1  FN magazine 1, container of gun powder. Others are 1 Epenal gun boat, 1,145 rounds of 7.62mm metal link, 2,485 rounds of 7.62mm ball cartons, 370 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 1,356 rounds of 7.62mm NATO.
Okojie said that there was no place to hide for criminals. He also warned those planning to declare what he referred to as an “imaginary independence” to have a rethink as the ODS was prepared to clamp down on them.

Lawyer Urges Buhari To Grant Amnesty To Boko Haram Members

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to grant amnesty to Boko Haram members in the wake of the defeat being inflicted on the insurgents by the Nigerian military.

In a statement issued Sunday, Mr. Adegboruwa said one year after Mr. Buhari declared war on the group, it had become clear that they may not be totally defeated immediately.

“It would seem, from all indications, that it will require a long drawn out war, for which we trust that our president and the military are well equipped and prepared,” Mr. Adegboruwa said.

“It is in the light of this that I am urging the president to seize the momentum of the victory being recorded against the insurgents, to extend an olive branch, to their accredited and authentic representatives, for some reprieve, by way of amnesty.

“After all, Boko Haram once named the president himself as their chief negotiator, in the last dispensation. So, in the same way that the president is engaging the Niger Delta militants, he should extend same to the insurgents, to achieve sustained peace, which will in turn put an end to the deplorable crises being experienced in the various IDP camps and indeed usher in development in the North East region.”

Mr. Adegboruwa’s suggestion came following a reported ambush by the Boko Haram group of over a dozen officers and soldiers of the Nigerian military, last week.

According to the Nigerian army, 19 personnel comprising 16 soldiers and three officers were declared missing after an ambush on troops at Guro Gongon village in Borno State.

“Our hearts and prayers go to the president, the military and indeed the families of these very gallant soldiers, believing firmly that in due course, they will all be rescued alive, by the power and grace of God,” said Mr. Adegboruwa.

“I join other Nigerians to commend the president, for the victories so far recorded against the terrorists, even though this would have been better celebrated with the rescue of the Chibok girls.

“This has indeed reinforced the view in many quarters, that the president would have been better placed as a minister of defence, in a true democratic environment.”

Certificate Forgery: Nine Ekiti Assembly Members To Face Trial

The Federal Government is planning to prosecute nine out of 26 members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly for alleged forgery of their academic results.

A security said in Abuja on Sunday that  the decision to prosecute them was based on the outcome of “an intensive investigation carried out by the Department of State Services into the state lawmakers’ certificates.’’

The DSS, it was gathered, carried out the investigation into the credentials submitted by the politicians to the Independent National Electoral Commission during the last general elections.

It was gathered that the probe was sequel to a myriad of petitions sent to the agency and the Police by aggrieved members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress.

Investigation was said to have been carried out in schools allegedly claimed to have been attended by the lawmakers and their former places of work.

The source explained that the files of the affected lawmakers had been sent to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.

The source added, “We have investigated the academic credentials of the lawmakers based on petitions sent to us by the politicians in the state.

“The petitions were based on alleged false declaration of academic qualifications and alleged age falsification in the papers presented to the INEC.

“We have been able to know that petitions against nine members of the State House of Assembly are genuine.

“We have already presented our report and we are expecting the office of the AGF to study it and prepare the charges against the suspects.”

House Of Reps To Conduct Public Hearing On U.S. Sexual Allegations Against Members

The House of Representatives says it will convene a public hearing as part of its investigations into an alleged sex scandal involving three of its members.

The hearing will allow Nigerians weigh in on the matter and be transparently engaged in the investigations as promised by the House leadership, Nicholas Ossai, the chairman of the House Ethics Committee, said.

The scandal allegedly occurred in the U.S. state of Ohio early June.

The allegations were contained in a petition forwarded to Speaker Yakubu Dogara by U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, on June 9.

In the correspondence, Mr. Entwistle said three Nigerian lawmakers, Mohammed Gololo (APC, Bauchi), Mark Gbillah (APC-Benue) and Samuel Ikon (PDP-Akwa Ibom), solicited sex from a hotel attendant and tried to engage the services of prostitutes while attending a leadership training program in that country.

The three lawmakers deny the allegations.

The speaker, Mr. Dogara, has also asked the United States government to prove its claim.

Military To Rehabilitate Repentant Boko Haram Members

Abubarka made this known when he featured on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum on Thursday in Abuja. He said that the operation was to rehabilitate, reintegrate, empower and de-radicalise surrendered members of the group. “Nigeria being a signatory to UN conventions, we have to comply fully with that portion of convention.

“Even if you arrest or capture an enemy or prisoner of war, by international law, you are to treat him with all human dignity; you must do that, as long as you are a signatory to UN convention.

“We evolved a policy by the defence headquarter and that operation is called operation ‘Safe Corridor’.

“Operation safe corridor is an operation trying to rehabilitate, reintegrate, empower and de-radicalise those, who surrender and those, who are captured.

“It is not in any way amnesty. We are trying to comply fully with international best global practices and that is why we came up with that.

“The Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Abayomi Olonishakin with other service chief agreed to this and they came up with this, which is the first of its kind since the terror of Boko Haram.

“And very soon, we will have a camp somewhere in the North- East where they will be kept for empowering and reintegrating and de-radicalising them.’’ However, he said that the military was not in any way relaxing in finding out the sponsors of boko haram.

“We are not in any way relaxing in finding out those who are sponsoring but those who are really active in the insurgency are our first target.

“The recruitment style of this insurgency is extremely worrisome; we are doing all we can to ensure that we block them though programmes that we have evolved.

“It has gone a long way in making them to surrender.’’ Abubakar said that the military in 2015 came up with security operation that targeted the insurgency. He said following the operation, a lot of boko haram members surrendered when they knew they would not be killed if they did so. He said that insurgency was something that was unpredictable, boundless and transitional.

DHQ Establishes Camp For Repentant Boko Haram Members

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) yesterday announced the establishment of a rehabilitation camp for repentant Boko Haram members under an exercise known as Operation Safe Corridor.
Defence spokesman, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, said in a statement yesterday that the camp’s establishment was in furtherance of government’s efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate surrendered and repentant Boko Haram members.

“The main focus of Operation Safe Corridor is geared towards rehabilitating and reintegrating the repentant and the surrendering Boko Haram members back into normal life in the society,” General Abubakar said.
He added: “The repentant terrorists in the camp will be taken through various vocational trainings so that they can be useful to themselves and be empowered to contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of their fatherland.”
Abubakar said the Defence Headquarters appealed to militants who are still carrying arms against their fellow citizens to repent and benefit from the numerous opportunities offered by the camp.
He added that the military’s final onslaught against the remnants of the Boko Haram group would continue unabated until they are completely neutralized.
“The reluctant Boko Haram members should therefore see wisdom in surrendering now, thereby saving themselves from the imminent calamity that is about to fall on them in the event of the military mop-up if they continue in their unwholesome acts,” he said

Shiites Allege Plan By Military To Clamp Down On Members

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, yesterday accused the military of making attempts to clamp down on the group in Katsina State.

The group said that: “Reports from Katsina today (Wednesday) indicated that the Nigerian Army is amassing troops in an attempt to clampdown on the Islamic Movement in the town.”

A statement by the spokesman of the group, Mallam Ibrahim Musa, said that: “Early in the morning armed troops were seen surrounding the main Juma’at mosque, where a peaceful maulud procession of the daughter of the prophet, Nana Fatima (AS) was scheduled to take off.

“Seeing this and due to the peaceful disposition of the Islamic Movement, the venue of this yearly event was changed to another neighbourhood of the town, and the procession went round some major streets of the town and ended without any incident.”

He added that: “However, to our consternation, reinforcement was brought from neighbouring formations of the army, and roadblocks were mounted on almost all the major roads leading to Katsina city.”

Musa continued: “We have been reliably informed that the army is set to replicate the wanton destruction of lives and property it carried out in Zaria last December. The army it seems has vowed to attack the Markaz Islamic Centre in the town any moment from now, possibly kill all its occupants and raze it to the ground, just as it did to Husainiyya Islamic centre in Zaria.“

Cameroon Sentences 89 Boko Haram Members To Death

Cameroun has sentenced 89 members of the Boko Haram terrorist group to death over terror charges.

In contrast, Nigeria where the deadly insurgency started and has recorded tens of thousands of deaths caused by the violent sect, has only convicted a handful of terrorists to prison terms.

Rather than convicting terrorists, who have been caught and detained in special prison facilities in mainly northern Nigeria, the federal government has been expending huge resources on their rehabilitation.

According to a BBC report, a Camerounian military court tried the insurgents over their roles in several attacks in the northern part of the country which borders Nigeria. Since 2009 when Boko Haram launched its campaign of violence, Cameroun has been its next target after Nigeria.

Why I Am Fighting Corruption, Buhari To Members Of Nigerian Community In India

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his main target for fighting corruption was to stop corrupt individuals from seeking to occupy public offices for selfish gains.

This is even as he stated that his government would not relent in the current anti-corruption war, stressing it would continue to many years.

According to him, the prosecution of alleged criminals would serve as a deterrent to others, stating that he was committed to curbing corruption, plugging all loopholes in public sector accounting and deploying available resources for the good of all Nigerians.

The president spoke, Wednesday, during a meeting with members of the Nigerian community in New Delhi, India where he is attending the 3rd Summit of the India and African Nations.

President Buhari also prioritized the recovery of looted funds, saying he was conscious of the devastating consequences of the illegal diversion of public resources meant for national development into private bank accounts.

He said: “The anti-corruption campaign will be on-going for many years. We are committed to the enthronement of good governance that plugs the loopholes in public sector accounting, and the use of scarce resources for public good.

“We are determined to demonstrate exemplary leadership that will make our citizens to change their ways in a manner that lays a solid foundation for reconstruction and development.

“I am confident that our approach to fighting corruption through value re-orientation, improved internal processes and systems and the rule of law, as well as enhancing the capacity of the various anti-corruption agencies and institutions will prove more enduring in addressing this evil.

“In the meantime, we will continue to prosecute those who have been indicted for corrupt practices and ensure that stolen funds are recovered, to serve as deterrence to others who nurse the ambition of seeking public office solely for illegal personal gain”.

Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, has stated that neither him nor any member of the Assembly was sacked by the Elections Petitions Tribunal on Monday.

He said: “I heard over the news that the Speaker and 20 others have been sacked by the Election Tribunal. No member, not even the Speaker has been sacked. The lower Tribunal gave judgement in their opinion. In their judgement they argued that there should be a rerun within 90days.

PDP Begins E-Registration Of Members

Following criticisms of the actions of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its National Working Committee have initiated online system of registration for its members across the country.

This mode of registration by members was once suggested by some aggrieved members within the party, known as PDP Renewal Group, but was rejected by the national leadership of the party and its governors.

Also, stakeholders of the party had insisted that this mode of registration must be introduced by the party.

Following the dismal performance of the party during the last general election, some members of the party have been calling for the sacking of the entire members of the NWC in order to give another set of leaders the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the party.

The criticism that trailed the poor performance of the party during the elections forced its Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, to resign.

Senate Sets Up Committee To Review Members’ Salaries, Allowances

The Senate has set up a committee to review the salaries and allowances of lawmakers. This was revealed Tuesday by the Senate president, Bukola Saraki.

He said the Adhoc committee was set up to reassess the structure, and review the level of openness, of members’ pay to ensure that the budget is in line with current economic realities.

Mr. Saraki said the step was taken due to controversies in the media on the allowances and salaries of the lawmakers. “In the last few days, there have been different reports on allowances for the National Assembly members,” he said.

“I reckon it to be false and reckless which has prompted the need to stir up transparency in allowances to avoid misinformation,” he said.

He said it was due to the same reason that he met with the officials of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

He stated that it was to ensure that the country gets an accurate presentation on the true state of all salaries and allowances.

He also announced the immediate composition of an 18-man Senate adhoc committee comprising of three senators for each geopolitical zones to develop a legislative agenda for the 8th Senate within the next couple of weeks.

“The task before us is enormous and Nigerians voted for change and we hope that we deliver to them tangible change,” Mr. Saraki said.

“The clear issues that agitate the minds of the people are the government revenues, the current fiscal crisis in many of our states, the unsustainable cost of governance in the country and the rising cost of doing business in Nigeria.

“This concerns have also agitated our minds individually and collectively and we must provide answers because it can no longer be business as usual.”

He added that the Senate either buckles up and face the realities to forge ahead to ensure a better future for the next generation or turn a blind eye to the extravagant facts that are staring us in the face.”

“Without doing so, we will not have the authority to ensure transparency in ministry and others for public good,” said Mr. Saraki.

Boko Haram Members In Riyom- Plateau Lawmaker

The member representing Riyom Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Daniel Dem, has alerted on the presence of members of the Boko Haram in his constituency. Riyom and neighbouring Barkin-Ladi LGA in northern Plateau had recently been attacked, the most recent being in Riyom on Saturday, May 9, in which two people were killed.

Dem, who is the Majority Leader of the state House of Assembly, recalled that in the past few days, several attacks had taken place around Riyom, especially in villages such as Bagai, Bachit and Rim. He urged the federal government not to allow the creation of another “Sambisa Forest” in his constituency.

A similar alarm was raised just before the general elections when the head,  Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD Centre), Dr Yakubu Sankey, expressed fears over increased violence and unusual movements which some of his workers sighted in remote parts of Riyom and Barkin-Ladi. Dem called on the Special Task Force (STF) to take immediate steps to protect his people.  But STF spokesman, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, dismissed his fears, saying there is nothing like Boko Haram in Plateau State.  “It’s just talk, there is nothing like that,” Iweha told Daily Trust in Jos.

Activities at the Niger State House of Assembly were disrupted again on Wednesday when policemen ordered the new Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Isah Kawu, who was elected on Tuesday, and 20 other members out of Assembly complex.

The Police and other security agents locked up the gate to prevent the coming in or going out of people, especially the Assembly workers, as they fired tear gas canisters in the complex.

Our correspondent gathered about 300 armed policemen and other security agents were deployed in the Assembly to ensure that the legislators could not conduct plenary for the day.

It was learnt that Kawu and 20 House members left the complex to meet at an undisclosed location. Their next line of action could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Niger State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mr. Olusola Amore, declined an interview with newsmen during his visit to the House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, the embattled Speaker, Mr. Adamu Usman, who was reportedly impeached on Tuesday, insisted that the new leadership was illegal

“What they did is unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect. We are still the leaders of the House of Assembly. I am happy they did not accuse any of us of financial mismanagement,” he said.
