I’ve never been linked to any certificate scandal – Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he has never been linked to any “scandal or controversy” concerning his academic qualifications.

Reacting to a publication which named him among ‘prominent Nigerians with certificate scandal’, Jonathan said there is no justification for his inclusion.

Speaking through his media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan said his academic qualifications can be veirified at the schools he attended.

The former president noted that his classmates from primary school to the university were still alive to corroborate his attendance.

“Our attention has been drawn to a story by a national newspaper of March 26 edition where Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was mentioned as one of the ‘prominent Nigerians with certificate scandals’,” the statement read.

“We really don’t know where this is coming from, but we wish to remain unambiguous in our assertion that this is obvious falsehood, since the former president has never been linked to any doubt, scandal or controversy concerning his academic qualifications.

“We are not aware of any probe, allegation or litigation relating to his very well known academic qualifications. For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to restate that President Jonathan’s educational records can easily be traced to St Michael’s Primary School, Oloibiri and Mater Dei High School, lmiringi, where he obtained his first school leaving certificate (FSLC) and General Certificate of Education (GCE), Ordinary Level respectively, as well as the University of Port Harcourt, where he received his Bachelor of Science, Master and Doctoral degrees.

“Luckily, many of President Jonathan’s classmates from primary school through the university are still alive and are traceable.

“It is therefore obvious that there is no justification for this abstruse association, as there is nothing linking the former president to the story.

“Again, we advise media organisations to always cross check their facts in order to avoid falling for the convenient choice of publishing false information.”

WAEC certificate valid for life – Registrar

The Registrar of West African Examination Council, WAEC, Iyi Uwadiae, says the certificate issued by the examination body is valid for life.

Mr. Uwadiae, who stated this at the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Forum in Lagos said that examination conducted by WAEC “is an achievement test’’ which remains valid forever.

He spoke against the backdrop of recent moves to increase the validity period of the Unified Test and Matriculation Examination (UTME) result, conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), from one to three years.

“WAEC is an achievement test. So, ours is to say at this level, like in Nigeria, we are for senior secondary.

“So at this secondary level, our result is saying that you have achieved this.

“It means you have gone through educational system for this period of years and you have achieved this.

“Therefore, you are qualified to move to the next stage, that is tertiary institution.

“Or you can go and work; a job that requires academic achievement for that level. That is what ours is saying.

“So, a look at our achievement test, which we conduct, and saying that you have at secondary school level, you have achieved this and you can go to that.

“Ours is to say you have achieved and you have achieved, so it is valid for life.”

In the case of UTME, the WAEC registrar said it was a “selection test’’ which, he noted, was for one situation.

“There are various variables that are looked into to say these people are selected for a particular examination for a particular academic year.

“So, we may say that that examination will be valid for only that because it is specific to a particular year for a particular exam and for a particular purpose.

“So you can say that what is valid here may not be valid for the other one (examination), so for one year, yes because it is a selection text.

“In selection test, you compete and you go; so, to say okay you have done it this year, this result is valid next year, no; the situations; the variables, they are not the same.

“So, as an educationist, I will say that one is difficult. But it is left for the exam body (JAMB) to explain.

“They are the one to say whether their results will be valid for ten year, five year, three years, I cannot say much on that but I know it is a selection text and selection test is for one situation.”

He, however, said that employers of labour or higher institutions, to which the holder of West Africa Senior Secondary Examination Certificate is seeking employment or admission, could subject such candidate to ability test to confirm his or her suitability.

4,403 Teachers Fail Certificate Screening Test In Ebonyi

Over 4000 primary school teachers in Ebonyi State have failed a test conducted by the state’s Universal Basic Education Board to determine the originality of their teacher training certificates.

Chairman of the boards investigating committee, Prof. Anthony Ani, who disclosed this in Abakaliki, the state capital over the weekend, said out of the 9000 teachers screened, half of them were discovered to have fake teacher training certificates.

He said, “The board should, as a matter of urgency, compile the names of teachers, especially those who presented statements of the result, testimonials, and photocopies and forwarded such names to acclaimed graduating institutions for verification and authentication.”

Ani also called for concerted efforts to revamp basic education in the state and recommended that teachers with severe medical challenges should be advised to seek medical attention with government support or be retired from the system, in line with government regulation.

INEC Issues Certificate Of Return To Obaseki

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issue a Certificate of Return to the Edo State Governor-elect, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, who won the September 28 governorship election in the state.

In his address, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State, Mr. Sam Olumekun, described the election as historic in the history of the commission and Edo people, noting that an inconclusive election would have violated the constitution, which was the reason why the election was postponed.

Olumekun said: “It is a historic day not only in the lives of our new leaders but also in the lives of the people of Edo State. It is the dawn of a new era.

“An inconclusive election would have pushed us to an electoral crisis with barely two weeks to the 30 days before handover, Edo people will appreciate why we had the election on September 28. That is why the commission left no stone unturned in conducting the September 28 election which was conclusive.

He also thanked INEC officials, security agencies and other stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure a successful outcome, noting that “of course you are aware that we did not lose any lives.”
He added that the job of “conducting an election is the joint duty of all stakeholders who play their part in ensuring a peaceful and credible election takes place, urging Obaseki to “kindly remember that the people’s interest and welfare is paramount.”

Certificate Forgery: Nine Ekiti Assembly Members To Face Trial

The Federal Government is planning to prosecute nine out of 26 members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly for alleged forgery of their academic results.

A security said in Abuja on Sunday that  the decision to prosecute them was based on the outcome of “an intensive investigation carried out by the Department of State Services into the state lawmakers’ certificates.’’

The DSS, it was gathered, carried out the investigation into the credentials submitted by the politicians to the Independent National Electoral Commission during the last general elections.

It was gathered that the probe was sequel to a myriad of petitions sent to the agency and the Police by aggrieved members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress.

Investigation was said to have been carried out in schools allegedly claimed to have been attended by the lawmakers and their former places of work.

The source explained that the files of the affected lawmakers had been sent to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.

The source added, “We have investigated the academic credentials of the lawmakers based on petitions sent to us by the politicians in the state.

“The petitions were based on alleged false declaration of academic qualifications and alleged age falsification in the papers presented to the INEC.

“We have been able to know that petitions against nine members of the State House of Assembly are genuine.

“We have already presented our report and we are expecting the office of the AGF to study it and prepare the charges against the suspects.”

Lawyer Withdraws Suit Seeking Buhari’s Disqualification For Lack Of Certificate, His Life Allegedly Threatened

Legal practitioner, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, has filed a notice at the Federal High Court in Abuja to discontinue the suit he instituted seeking the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari for lack of certificate.

Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe had alleged that Buhari was not qualified to aspire for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because he did not sit for the Cambridge West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961 as he claimed.

The notice of discontinuance dated June 27 and obtained reads: “Take note that the plaintiff in this originating summons, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, hereby discontinues this action.”

Checks revealed that following the withdrawal of the suit from court, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi will today sit and accordingly strike out the case.
Though Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe did not give any reason for withdrawing the case from court, It was gathered that it might not be unconnected with alleged threats to his life and members of his family.

In an interview last month, Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe had alleged that there were some subtle threats on him to withdraw the case from court.
He had said: Of course, I am concerned and my family and friends are too; I am not naïve and some subtle threats have already been made. For now it is small comfort that if anything happens to me, even if disguised as an accident or anything, Nigerians will know exactly who is responsible.

“In any case, it was Professor Wole Soyinka, I think, who once said in one of his books that ‘The Man Dies in Him Who Keeps Quiet in The Face of Tyranny’ or something of the sort. Speaking of which, I am amazed at the conspiracy of silence by Nigerians. It is astounding is it not, that in the light of this very apparent rape of our constitution, laws, indeed the very essence of our democracy, all of our civil society advocates and activists have gone deaf and dumb in the face of tyranny.

“All those voluble persons (and I don’t want to name them; they know themselves and Nigerians know them too), who pretend they are activists or keepers of the moral conscience of the nation astonishingly can’t see or appreciate what is happening. This country really misses Chief Gani Fawehinmi; he was the only fearless, credible, true and genuine conscience of the nation, not the pretenders we have today; all the others only make noise when it suits them and their interests but look the other way once they are compromised. None of us today, can tie Gani’s shoe-laces.”

Find Out How PDP Chiefs Forged Buhari’s Document

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders seem to be hanging on tenaciously to their puerile stand that All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has not come clean on its academic qualifications.

It emerged yesterday that the PDP Presidential Campaign Council manipulated a Cambridge University e-mail to justify its claim that Gen. Buhari’s West African School Certificate’s statement of result was forged.

PDP Campaign Council spokesman Femi Fani-Kayode has been accused of doctoring an e-mail from Cambridge.

An accountant and blogger, Mr. Suraj Oyewale, claimed in a message published by Premium Times that the e-mail received from Cambridge by his friend, Sodiq Alabi, was doctored by Fani-Kayode to achieve another purpose. Fani-Kayode has not disputed this claim.

Oyewole said: “The controversy over the secondary school results of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, continues as the  University of Cambridge has said that Hausa Language, which is one of the subjects listed by Buhari, was not offered in its examinations in 1961.

“The disclosure was contained in a statement from the office of the Director of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation claiming it came through an e-mail dated Thursday, January 22, 2015 from the institution’s Archives Delivery Service Officer, Jacky Emerson, to one SODIQ ALABI who requested for confirmation if the examination body offered Hausa Language in the 1961 West African Certificate Examination it organised.

Electronic Certificate: The Buhari Lesson

Beginning with an apology for the header picture because I have so much respect for General Buhari; not because he is a presidential candidate, but because he is 72. We have allowed ourselves to be carried away with political frenzy and have forgotten easily that this man, aside being a former head of state, is old enough to father most of us that call his name anyhow.

The header picture is just a perfect illustration of how this whole certificate issue has been blown out of proportion. There is even a “Park, Buhari Pull Over” video. #Sigh.

Now back to the topic, electronic documents were probably non existent at General Buhari’s time, but his experience today is a lesson for every digital age individual. I have written about what every graduate must do long before this whole drama began. (Check blog archive and find “Things Every Graduate Must Do”).

As a graduate of this time and dispensation, if you cannot scan your credentials and save them In your email or any inbox, then you can be likened to someone who rubs Vaseline on an unbathed body.

Gone are the days when you laminate them because fire can lick that plastic off your papers. Saving your credentials electronically may not be an eternal solution, but believe me, it is the best we have for now, especially if you have a political ambition.

Finally, I tried not to get religious but cannot help it. The Holy Book teaches us to honor our father and our mother and it shall be well with us. And we wonder what is wrong with our nation. Keep insulting every politician that is older than you or old enough to be your father. A country that has no respect for authority or the elderly does not deserve good leadership. Period!!!

Why Bello Isyaku was Summoned On Buhari’s Certificate

Contrary to reports that the principal of Government College, Katsina State, Bello Isyaku, has been questioned about the college’s release of Gen Muhammadu Buhari’s secondary school certificate results, the state’s commissioner of education, Professor Kado Kurfi, has explained what really happened.

According to Prof Kurfi, speaking with Daily Trust at the weekend, the principal was only invited to Katsina state Ministry of Education to verify the results he released.

“No query was issued; why do I have to do that? We invited him to verify if indeed he was the one that released it and to ensure that it is genuine,” the commissioner said.

It will be recalled that since the principal released Gen Buhari’s secondary school results, there have been mixed reactions as to whether the results are genuine or fake.

‘Even Jonathan Didn’t Complete His PhD’–Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has predicted a victory for Buhari at the general elections next month and has insinuated that even Jonathan is aware that his days in office are quite numbered. Obasanjo pointed out that all the attacks being aimed Buhari’s way had to do with the knowledge in Jonathan’s camp that Buhari will win the popular votes come the presidential ballot.

“I see Buhari as the next President and Jonathan is aware of that, and that is the reason they are hitting him everywhere to put confusion in his camp. But a General is always a General… “ Obasanjo was quoted as saying by Greenbreporters.

The former President said the truth of the matter is that Jonathan is aware that Buhari is qualified to contest for the Presidential election but that “some hawks with Jonathan do not want him to contest because they believe that he will win and come for them”.

Obasanjo said the issue of Buhari’s certificate came up before the 2007 general elections and the former military ruler was given a clean bill of health to contest because investigations had proven that it was a non-issue.

“The issue (of Buhari’s certificate) came up in 2007, and we investigated and found out that his WASCE is with the military and that was why he was allowed to contest in 2007. Buhari cannot listen to anyone about his certificates because as a General of the Nigerian Army, he will speak when he chooses, not by Femi FaniKayode and Okupe asking him to”, Obasanjo said.

Army Denies Having Copies of Buhari’s Credential

The Nigerian Army has just revealed that it does not have copies or originals of General Muhammadu Buhari’s certificates as claimed in an affidavit he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Director, Army Public Relations, Brig, Gen O. Laleye who made this known Tuesday in Abuja while addressing the press said the General applied to join the military as a Form Six student of the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina on 18 Oct 61on the recommendation of his school principal.

He said: “His application was duly endorsed by the Principal of the school, who also wrote a report on him and recommended him to be suitable for military commission.

“It is a practice in the NA that before candidates are shortlisted for commissioning into the officers’ cadre of the Service, the Selection Board verifies the original copies of credentials that are presented. “However, there is no available record to show that this process was followed in the 1960s.

“Nevertheless, the entry made on the NA Form 199A at the point of documentation after commission as an officer indicated that the former Head of State obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961 with credits in relevant subjects: English Language, Geography, History, Health Science, Hausa and a pass in English Literature.

“Neither the original copy, Certified True Copy (CTC) nor statement of result of Major General M Buhari’s WASC result is in his personal file.”
