Bastian Schweinsteiger set to leave Man. United for MLS side, Chicago Fire.

Manchester United have agreed to let midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger join MLS side Chicago Fire.

A deal between the clubs was agreed on Monday and is subject to a medical and visa being secured.

The former Germany captain, 32, has signed a one-year contract, according to the Chicago Tribune newspaper.

“I’ve always sought opportunities where I hoped to make a positive impact,” Schweinsteiger said in the Tribune. “My move to Chicago Fire is no different.”

Schweinsteiger, who led Germany to World Cup victory in 2014, had talks with Chicago Fire last year but opted to stay at United beyond the end of the January window.

However, Fire requested the midfielder join them now and, as Schweinsteiger was unlikely to play any significant part at United for the remainder of the season, the Old Trafford club have sanctioned his exit.

Last week, he trained with some junior members of the United squad while the remainder prepared for their Europa League game against FC Rostov.

“In the locker room, he will be a huge example of a champion,” Chicago Fire manager Veljko Paunovic told the Tribune.

“He still is somebody that can show that on the field and [demonstrate] how our guys have to work, prepare, behave, think and work together in order to get to that level.”

Schweinsteiger, who was signed by the Old Trafford club under former boss Louis van Gaal in July 2015, trained alone or with the Under-23 side at United after Jose Mourinho took over as manager last summer.

He returned to the first-team set-up before a Europa League game against Fenerbahce in November and played his first game for the club this season in an EFL Cup win over West Ham on 30 November.

However, he has made just three further appearances for the club – scoring one goal – with his last outing coming as a substitute against Saint-Etienne in the Europa League on 22 February.

Yaya Toure may leave Manchester City for Manchester United – Agent

Yaya Toure would consider a shock move to Manchester United if he leaves Manchester City at the end of the season, according to the Ivory Coast midfielder’s agent.

Toure is out of contract once the current campaign is over and his representative Dimitri Seluk has started talks with interested clubs.

The 33-year-old has had a stormy relationship with City boss Pep Guardiola and was surprisingly left on the bench for his team’s Champions League last 16 second leg defeat at Monaco on Wednesday.

Asked if he would be interested in United, Seluk told Sky Sports News: “Why not? Jose Mourinho is a very good coach. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was together with Yaya in Barcelona.

“I understand this is two clubs who are rivals but for me, for example, this is not a problem from Yaya or from me. This problem will be from Manchester City staff.”

Toure was frozen out by Guardiola earlier in the season after a row between the manager and Seluk, before the situation was resolved in November.

Guardiola has previously said contract matters will be dealt with at the end of the season, but Seluk says there is no guarantee Toure won’t have agreed a deal with another team by then.

“Some clubs have contacted me. Now we have three options. I don’t speak about Yaya and China or the MLS. He will play in Europe. I have spoken with clubs in different countries – Italy and Spain,” he said.

“I said to Manchester City that we will start negotiations with other clubs about the future of Yaya. After that, if Manchester City want, they can start negotiations. If they don’t want then we will find another club.

“Yaya can, tomorrow, sign a contract with another club and after that for Manchester City it is too late.

“From yesterday we officially started negotiating with different clubs about his future.

“We waited until March 15 for what Manchester City will say but until now Manchester City don’t say anything. Before March, we didn’t negotiate with anybody because Yaya does a lot with Manchester City, so we waited.

“But we cannot wait until the last minute, until June, and have no negotiations with anybody.”

BREAKING: Ibrahimovich to serve three-match ban after accepting FA’s charges

Manchester United has been dealt a severe blow as Zlatan Ibrahimovich is set to serve a three-match ban after accepting the English FA’s charge of violent conduct in an EPL match in which Zlatan was seen pulling an elbow action on Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings.

As well as the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea, Mourinho’s former club, at Stamford Bridge on Monday, Ibrahimovic will miss the Premier League games away to Middlesbrough and at home to West Bromwich Albion on April 1, after the international break.

The Swedish striker had until 6pm on a Tuesday to respond to the FA and opted not to contest the charge, despite claiming in the wake of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford that Mings had “jumped” into his right elbow. The incident was missed by referee Kevin Friend at the time but it was determined that the incident merited a retrospective red card when the footage was reviewed on Monday.

Manchester United draw Rostov in Europa League last 16

Manchester United have drawn Russian club Rostov in the Europa League last 16.

Jose Mourinho’s men reached the knockout stage with a 4-0 aggregate victory over Saint-Etienne, having finished runners up in their group.

Man Utd are the only Premier League club remaining in the competition after Tottenham were eliminated on Thursday.

The full last 16 so far is:

Celta Vigo vs Krasnodar

APOEL vs Anderlecht

Schalke vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Lyon vs Roma

Rostov vs Manchester United

Olympiacos vs Besiktas

Gent vs Genk

Kobenhavn vs Ajax

I’m staying at Manchester United, says Wayne Rooney, denies China move.

Wayne Rooney will remain a Manchester United player, the striker said in a statement released on Thursday.

The 31-year-old said he’s not ready to leave the Red Devils for the Chinese Super League – or anywhere else – just yet.

The presence of his agent, Paul Stratford, in China had given life to speculation that his time at the club he joined in 2004 had come to an end.

But the United legend says he wishes to remain a part of the Jose Mourinho-led team.

“Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Man United,” Rooney’s statement said.

“I hope I’ll play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts.

“It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.”

Rooney has already announced plans to retire from international football after next year’s World Cup in Russia.

His desire to lead England to the tournament may have been the motivating factor behind his decision to continue his professional career in United.

Rooney’s agent in China for transfer talks.

Wayne Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford held talks in China on Thursday amid mounting speculation over the Manchester United captain’s future, British media said.

Rooney, 31, has been sidelined by manager Jose Mourinho heightening expectations he could leave United for the mega-rich Chinese Super League.

Guangzhou Evergrande, Beijing Guoan, Jiangsu Suning and Tianjin Quanjian are said to be among those interested in United’s all-time top scorer.

However it remains unlikely that any move would be complete before the transfer window shuts next Tuesday.

Rooney missed Wednesday’s Europa League last-32 second leg in Saint-Etienne through injury, but dominated conversation in France.

Mourinho said that Rooney’s future was in his own hands in comments at his pre-match press conference that only fuelled the speculation.

“You’ll have to ask him,” Mourinho said. “You have to ask him.

“Of course I can’t guarantee (he will be here). I can’t guarantee that I’m here next week, how can I guarantee that a player is here next season?

“What I can guarantee is that if Wayne one day leaves the club it is not because I want him to leave the club. That’s the only thing I can guarantee.

“I would never push – or try to push – a legend of this club to another destiny.

“So you have to ask him if he sees himself staying in the club for the rest of his career or if he sees himself moving.

“It is not a question for me because I am happy to have him.”

Pushed on whether it was possible Rooney could leave in the next week, Mourinho retorted: “You have to ask him, not me.

“I was very open with you in the answer. I don’t want him to leave.”

Rooney’s deal at Old Trafford runs until mid-2018, with United holding the option to extend it by a further year.

He is United’s record goalscorer and has won five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy since joining as an 18-year-old for £27m from Everton in 2004.

A return to boyhood club Everton and move to Major League Soccer could be other avenues for Rooney, but are unlikely to offer wages anywhere near that available in China.

Former United team-mate Carlos Tevez, ex-Chelsea midfielder Oscar and former Watford striker Odion Ighalo are among those to have recently made big-money moves to the Far East.

However, a switch to China could bring Rooney’s England career to an abrupt end.

The country’s all-time top scorer has won 119 caps and is closing in on Peter Shilton’s record of 125 appearances.

Rooney has already announced plans to retire from international football after the next year’s World Cup in Russia.

“Winning the FA cup is very important to Chelsea”, says Mourinho

José Mourinho will return to Stamford Bridge for a second time this season to face his former club, Chelsea.

Manchester United, the FA Cup holders, were hammered 4-0 earlier this season at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League game.

Mourinho praised his side’s display at Blackburn on Sunday but expressed concerned over a potential fixture pile-up before the FA Cup game at Chelsea.

“No reaction,” Mourinho reacted to the FA cup draws.

“I have to play Saint-Etienne, I have to play the EFL Cup final, I have to play hopefully another opponent in the Europa League.

“I have to fight for a top-four position in the Premier League. I have so many things to think about.

“Chelsea can only think about that because they are champions and they have nothing else to fight for.

“So the FA Cup I believe is something important for them.

“The match is in one month’s time, so I don’t want to think about it.

“We’re going to fight for the FA Cup, but the League Cup is the one we have a 50 per cent possibility to win.

“And the next one is to get a result against St Etienne on Wednesday and be in the last 16 of the Europa League.”

Red Devils have not won at Chelsea since October 2012 and Mourinho was humiliated on his last visit there in October.

Antonio Conte’s side subjected Mourinho to his heaviest Premier League defeat.

Manchester United wouldn’t celebrate top-four finish – Carrick

Manchester United midfield Maestro Michael Carrick insists a top-four finish in the Premier League would be no reason to celebrate.

Despite a 15-match unbeaten league run, Jose Mourinho’s men are sixth in the table, albeit just two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

With Chelsea seemingly running away with the title, as many as six clubs are fighting for the three spots behind Antonio Conte’s team.

But Carrick – a five-time league winner whose future at United is uncertain – said no celebrations would be had if Mourinho’s side secured a top-four spot.

“It’s not something we’d celebrate, if we finished third, fourth or even second,” he told the Mirror.

“You only celebrate when you win, but the Champions League is a big part of this club. It’s where you want to play, it’s where the best players want to play.

“So in terms of attracting players and all that type of stuff, the club is geared up for that, of course it is, but you can only celebrate winning, really, and finishing top.”

Part of their long unbeaten run has seen United held by the likes of Stoke City and Hull City in recent matches.

Carrick said qualifying for the Champions League was the minimum expectation at Old Trafford.

“In terms of the top four, you can’t say it’s unthinkable not to make it because it’s there. You’ve got to achieve it, you’ve got to earn it,” he said.

“We’ve certainly got everything there to give us the best chance of reaching that goal, but the top four has got to be the bare minimum, really.”

United look to continue their top-four push when they host Watford on Saturday.

Manchester United debt increases by £71.6m

Manchester United’s net debt has increased by £71.6 million in the space of three months to £409.3m, the club’s quarterly financial report has confirmed.

The report, which covers three months up to December 31, 2016, shows that the club’s total overheads rose 27.1 per cent between September 2016 and the end of the calendar year. This comes despite the new Premier League TV deal coming into effect, with the gains being offset by the loss of Champions League revenue.

United have put the loss down in no small part to the significant drop in the value of the pound since the referendum in favour of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, citing the strengthened US dollar as another factor.

However, United do expect to return record revenues once more after topping the Deloitte Football Money League for the first time in over a decade in 2015-16.

In delivering the report, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “We are pleased to be competing for the first available trophy of the season when we travel to Wembley to face Southampton in the EFL Cup final this month.

“The robustness of our business model continues to be reflected in our strong quarterly financial results and we remain on track to deliver record revenues for the year.”

One curiosity in the report is the inclusion of Bastian Schweinsteiger under ‘exceptional items’, with the German midfielder’s return to Jose Mourinho’s plans in recent months being reflected in the accounts as a £4.8m boost to the squad’s value.

Schweinsteiger was excluded from the first team by Mourinho at the start of the season but has since made a comeback and has been added to their list of players eligible to feature in the Europa League. United begin the knockout stage with the first leg of their tie against Saint-Etienne on February 16.

Manchester United not my dream club – Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has admitted that Manchester United is not his dream club, but he only signed for the Premier League team because it is bigger than Borussia Dortmund.

The Armenia international moved to Old Trafford last summer after three years with Dortmund, during which he scored 41 times and provided 49 assists in 140 appearances in all competitions.

“United might not have been my dream club to begin with, but they have always been among the best clubs in the world for me,” Mkhitaryan told Sport Bild.

“Manchester United are a bigger club than Borussia Dortmund, everyone knows that and we should just accept that.

“It was a new challenge for me that I could not turn down.”

The 28-year-old also laughed off insinuations that he left Dortmund because of money.

“I find it hard to understand criticism that I joined United for the money. That is simply wrong,” he added.

“Had it all been about money for me, I would have left for Shakhtar Donetsk for Anzhi Makhachkala rather than Borussia Dortmund.

“But that was not what I wanted. I wanted to keep on developing.

“My decision to leave Dortmund was not a decision against the club. It was just time for a new challenge.”

“Chelsea lacks style”, Jose Mourinho takes a swipe at Premier League Leaders.

Jose Mourinho took a swipe at his old club Chelsea as the Manchester United boss accused the Premier League leaders of lacking style.

Mourinho’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Leicester on Sunday and he was quick to highlight the difference between the dominant United display and what he perceives as the more prosaic efforts of Antonio Conte’s men.

Frustrated by criticism of the cautious nature of his teams when he was in charge at Chelsea, Mourinho made it clear that he is unimpressed the way the Blues, currently nine points clear at the top, and also Tottenham and Liverpool, have been praised despite employing safety-first philosophies.

“My team is playing very well but for many years in my career, especially in this country, when my teams were ruthless and phenomenal defensively I listened week after week to people saying that was not enough, despite winning the title three times,” Mourinho said.

“This season it looks that being strong defensively and good on the counter attack is art. That is a big change in England.

“We are Manchester United, we want to play attacking football. This is the way the fans want us to play.

“But I don’t want to be a manager of a team that doesn’t win matches. We have to score goals. Today we did and that made the difference. Today was very important.”

Mourinho’s claims seemed a little harsh, but he was in typically mischievous mood and even referenced his demise as Chelsea boss last season, which came following a defeat at Leicester.

“The last time I was in this chair I was sacked a day later,” he said with a smirk before bringing an end to his post-match press conference at the King Power Stadium.

Mourinho’s buoyant outlook was a contrast to his sulky demeanour following last week’s draw against Hull and the key to his mood swing was Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the United midfielder who tormented Leicester with his subtle passing and clever movement.

– Emotional –
Mkhitaryan scored United’s opener and set up the third for Juan Mata after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had doubled the visitors’ lead.

Mourinho acknowledged the first goal had been crucial as it boosted his team’s belief and shattered Leicester’s already fragile morale.

“We missed the first big chance but scored the next one. That is the story of the game,” he said.

“We didn’t play better than in many other matches. We were solid, but we scored goals.

“It makes all the difference. In the second half you are in emotional and tactical control.

“You kill the emotion of the opponent and the whole game looks different.”

Having left Mkhitaryan out at the start of the season, Mourinho is now convinced the Armenian has adapted to the Premier League.

“If a player isn’t playing sometimes it can seem the manager is disturbing them, but that is not true,” he said.

“Sometimes the best way to protect the player is not to play him. Henrikh is one of these cases, you see the magic things he does.”

Meanwhile, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri insists he still has the backing of his players after their fourth successive defeat left them one point above the relegation zone.

Reports have suggested the Italian has lost some support among the troubled champions, but he is adamant they are together and can still avoid crashing out of the league a year after their shock title triumph.

“Everybody is frustrated. Of course we aren’t happy, we are very sad,” he said.

“I have said if the players don’t want me they can go to the owner, but they have not.

“We are together, solid like last season but without the results. That is the hard thing.

“We will fight until the end. Leicester is a club used to fighting. I’m confident about this.”

Manchester United to employ full-time counter terrorism manager

Manchester United believe they are the first sports club in the country to have a full-time counter terrorism manager.

The appointment was revealed at a recent fans’ forum, and Press Association Sport understands the role will be filled by a former inspector from Greater Manchester Police’s specialist search unit.

The development comes at a time when Old Trafford’s security is under increased scrutiny.

United saw the final match of the 2015-16 season against Bournemouth called off after what proved to be a fake bomb, left behind following a training exercise, was found in a toilet.

There was another incident in November when two individuals managed to break off from a stadium tour and stay overnight at Old Trafford ahead of the match with Arsenal.

On the whole, security has been beefed up around the club since the Paris attacks in November 2015 when the Stade de France was targeted on a night when 130 were killed.

Vehicles are now routinely checked as they enter the premises, while individuals heading into the stadium are searched.

More security supervisors have been deployed after fans complained at the time it took for searches at turnstiles.

Former Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal retires from coaching.

Ex-Manchester United and Netherlands manager, Louis van Gaal, says he has retired from coaching after a 26-year career.

The 65-year-old van Gaal has been out of work since being sacked by United hours after winning the FA Cup in May 2016.

“I thought maybe I would stop, then I thought it would be a sabbatical, but now I do not think I will return to coaching,” Van Gaal was quoted as saying by a Dutch newspaper .

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that van Gaal also had spells in charge of Ajax, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ.

He made the announcement on Monday after receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Dutch government for his contribution to football.

He cited family issues for his decision, with the newspaper saying it was partly motivated by the sudden death of his daughter’s husband last month.

“So much has happened in my family. You become a human being again with your nose pressed to the facts,” he added.

The Dutchman also revealed he turned down lucrative offers to continue his coaching career in the Far East.

Van Gaal played as a midfielder for Ajax, Royal Antwerp, Telstar, Sparta Rotterdam and AZ between 1972 and 1987.

He then moved into coaching, first as an assistant at AZ and followed by the same role at Ajax.

He replaced Leo Beenhakker as Ajax head coach in 1991 and went on to preside over a period of sustained success.

Van Gaal won the Dutch league title on three occasions as well as the 1992 UEFA Cup and the 1995 Champions League title.

Van Gaal was asked to emulate that success at Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

He inherited Bobby Robson’s side in 1997 and led them to two successive La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey.

His country came calling in 2000, but his first stint in charge lasted less than two years when The Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup.

It was the first time they had missed the competition since 1986.

The Dutchman’s second spell at FC Barcelona was even shorter —- eight months —- as he left midway through the season with the club hovering just above the relegation zone.

He then guided AZ Alkmaar to the 2005/2006 Eredivisie title before moving to the Bundesliga, where he helped Bayern Munich to the 2009/2010 Bundesliga title.

The Dutch national side approached Van Gaal again in 2012 and this time The Netherlands became one of the first two European countries, along with Italy, to qualify for Brazil 2014.

There, they went on to finish in third place.

After much speculation, he joined Manchester United in May 2014, signing a three-year contract to succeed David Moyes.

However, United replaced him with Jose Mourinho after just two years following a fifth-placed Premier League finish in the 2015/2016 season.

NAN reports that the club’s first FA Cup triumph since 2004 was even not sufficient to save him.

EPL: Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp Satisfied With Draw.

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, wants his players to stop spurning chances after they needed an 84th-minute equalizer from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to rescue a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Only seven of United’s 32 Premier League goals this season have been scored in the first 35 minutes and Mourinho wants his team to stop letting their opponents off the hook.

United, who had won their previous nine matches in all competitions, remain sixth, four points off the top four.

On the flipside, Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp believes his team dominated play and deserved more from the game.

A James Milner penalty handed the visitors the lead in the 27th minute after Paul Pogba handled the ball in the box.

After the game, Klopp was quick to praise the performance of his Liverpool side but admitted that while a draw was satisfactory, the performance merited more.

Manchester United are victims of double standards – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho claimed he is being judged unfairly by critics after Manchester United conceded a late Leighton Baines penalty in a damaging 1-1 draw at Everton.

Mourinho’s team have won just twice in the league since the end of August, a run which has featured numerous draws and has derailed United’s hopes of winning a title in their manager’s debut season at Old Trafford.

However, Mourinho, who earned a reputation for not always winning in the most attractive style when in charge of Chelsea, insists his side is playing well and that he is being held to a double standard.

“You have to make a decision because when my teams are playing pragmatic football and winning matches and winning titles, you say it is not right and nice,” Mourinho said.

“When my teams play very, very well, there is a huge change in relation to the past two or three years. Now you say what matters is to get result, no matter what.

“At the moment teams are getting results, defending with 11 players, keeping the ball and playing on the counter-attack. You have to make a decision.”

The last comment may have been a thinly-disguised reference to Chelsea and their current style of play.

But, in any case, United had only themselves to blame for their latest disappointment as late substitute Marouane Fellaini tripped Idrissa Gueye and Baines struck the equalising penalty.

Mourinho, whose side are 13 points behind leaders Chelsea, did not take kindly to questions about his decision to bring on the Belgian and said: “I thought you would know more about football than you do.

“It is obvious. Everton is not a passing team. They play direct. Everything is direct.

“When a team is losing it plays direct, when you have a player on the bench with two metres (height) you play that player in front of the defensive line to win the match.

– Emotional –

Baines’s penalty cancelled out the opening goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a strong spell from United who also saw Ander Herrera hit a post.

“It was another game with a very good performance in a very difficult place to play,” said Mourinho

“A very emotional stadium against a team with very good players.

“We are playing very well at home, being super dominant. We are playing very well away controlling matches and performing really well with some amazing performance but not getting the results we deserve.”

United defender Phil Jones, who continued his impressive recent form after returning from injury problems, articulated the frustration in the visitors’ camp.

“It’s happened too many times, we’ve dropped too many points,” said Jones.

“That’s four or five games I can think of where we have completely dominated and didn’t win. It’s happened again.”

United might have had greater problems had defender Marcos Rojo been dismissed in the first half, instead of earning a yellow card, for a horrific lunge at Gueye, although Everton manager Ronald Koeman refused to criticise the Argentinian.

“It’s difficult,” said Koeman who made three excellent substitutions to rescue the point.

“Maybe if the referee could watch it back, maybe it would be a red card. We always have discussions about red or yellow, if it’s a penalty, but finally it’s a fair result. Both teams didn’t deserve to lose.

“We can fight back, we showed that today. It was disappointing to go 1-0 down but we didn’t deserve to lose the match.

“We showed that commitment and qualities and the three subs had a big impact on the game. We deserved it because we were dangerous in the second half.”

Manchester United’s Mourinho needs to play attacking football – Eto’o

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho needs to keep playing attacking football, his former Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto’o has said.

Eto’o played under Mourinho at Inter when the club won the Treble in 2010 and also worked with him at Chelsea in 2013-14.

Success in Italy was built on a solid defence — something Mourinho has become strongly associated with — but this week he praised the “beautiful, attacking football” he feels United are playing.

Eto’o told Telefoot: “Jose has changed a lot, because I got to know someone exceptional when I arrived at Inter.

“At Chelsea, it was a bit more difficult. We saw each other not so long ago in Mexico. He seemed to have changed again. He asked for three years to relaunch Manchester United.

“Today, you have to want to play football, to make your boys play football. You can’t defend all the time. Football isn’t like that any more.

“If you don’t want to play like Barcelona or Manchester City, you’re going to have problems.”

Discussing his relationship with Mourinho, Eto’o said he had “no problem with Jose.”

“I like him a lot,” he added. “He has things that no other coach does.

“He can take a security guard, tell them: ‘You’re the best,’ and the person goes to the stadium and has a great game. He’s very good at that, talking, but football isn’t just that any more.”

Mourinho: I dropped Rooney because he isn’t fast enough

Jose Mourinho has revealed that Wayne Rooney’s lack of pace meant he had to start from the bench in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal over the weekend.

There were fears that Rooney could be punished by Mourinho for his boozing antics while on England duty, and those fears were seemingly confirmed when the United captain was named on the bench for the clash with Arsenal, but Mourinho says he started Rooney from the bench because he wasn’t fast enough for what he wanted.

“I thought we were going to have the ball,” said Mourinho. “Arsenal are a team who let the opponents play.

“I thought we would have space and the ball would arrive quite easily to the attacking players.

“I believed ones like Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were faster than Wayne — better attacking opponents one-to-one in the last line. I thought it was the best option.”

United led the Gunners in that game and looked set for a certain victory, before conceding a late equalizer but Mourinho insists he cannot fault the performance of his players on the day.

And the United boss also praised his midfield combination for the game, as he looks to have found his most effective combination in Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick.

“The midfield is playing very well,” said Mourinho. “Pogba, Carrick and Herrera are playing very well. The defenders, the way Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo performed, were so solid and confident. We defended high and were compact when we had to be.

“It was a very good performance, but I go home with the feeling that I lost against Arsenal in the Premier League.

“Pogba is adapting much better in relationships, with the intensity of the competition and he’s much more confident.

“Obviously he plays with some guidelines over his position, but at the same time with some freedom to occupy some attacking areas where he feel and thinks he can be important.”

Hector Bellerin out for a month but Alexis Sanchez could face Man Utd

Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin is out for four weeks with an ankle injury, Arsene Wenger has revealed.

The Gunners boss said “a strong tackle” from Tottenham’s Danny Rose was responsible for ligament damage which will sideline the right-back for an important run of games, starting at Manchester United on Saturday.

Alexis Sanchez will need assessing ahead of Old Trafford after a hamstring problem kept him out of one of two Chile World Cup qualifiers during the international break.

And there is still no date set for the return of Santi Cazorla, who is yet to take part in training a month after suffering a recurrence of his Achilles trouble.

“Hector is out for four weeks,” Wenger said at his press conference on Thursday. “He got injured in the last 10 seconds against Tottenham in a very strong tackle from Rose.”

Wenger had urged Chile not to play Sanchez against Uruguay this week after he sat out their goalless draw with Colombia, but in the end the Arsenal forward started and scored twice before he was substituted in the 84th minute.

“He texted us that he’s in good shape,” said Wenger, who stopped short of criticising Chile’s decision. “We have to wait and see tomorrow morning to see if he can be involved in the squad.

“What I will consider is the risk of injury because he played recovering from a hamstring injury. It depends a lot on the honesty of the player.”

Bellerin, meanwhile, will miss the Champions League game with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and must now be considered a doubt for the Premier League trip to Manchester City on December 18.

Mathieu Debuchy has been out of the picture all season so Carl Jenkinson, who last month made his first Arsenal appearance since May 2014, is in line for a run in the side.

Cazorla’s absence is also a concern, and Arsenal have failed to win two of their three league games since the Spain midfielder was injured.

Wenger said: “Cazorla is still out. For how long exactly I don’t know. He’s not even out training.”

Fee for Pogba move to Manchester United not too much – Juventus

Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta has defended the payment of a €27 million representation fee to Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola as part of the midfielder’s transfer to Manchester United in the summer.

Raiola earned the sum when Pogba, 23, returned to United from Juve for a world-record fee of €105m in August.

Marotta says the fact that the France international’s move was the biggest transfer in football history means the agent’s slice was not extraordinary.

“We’re talking about a deal over €100m and it’s absolutely normal that whoever contributed to the operation’s conclusion should receive a significant financial return,” Marotta told Il Corriere della Sera.

Marotta added that Raiola had not only been acting in Pogba’s interests, but also working to find the right solution for Juve, further justifying such a substantial payment.

“From being simply an advisor, agents have now become intermediaries who also work on behalf of the club,” Marotta said. “They propose offers and conduct negotiations.”

Deducting Raiola’s fee, Juve still made a considerable profit on Pogba, as Marotta explained at the club’s AGM last month.

“He [Pogba] came from United for a price of around €1.5m,” Marotta said. “After four years with us he decided to return to England. He wanted to leave at all costs. Our asking price was €105m plus €5m in bonuses, which is payable if the player renews with United or leaves for a fee of more than €50m.

“That brings us to a capital gain in the budget of €95m. Mino Raiola and his company will be paid €27m. Taking fees into account, the total gain for Pogba was €72m.”

Juve reinvested that profit plus a further €18m to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, while further investment in Miralem Pjanic and Marko Pjaca saw them spend more than any other club in Italy in the summer.

However, with an earning of €76m from last season’s participation in the Champions League and further sources of revenue, the Turin-based club announced a profit for the second year running in 2015-16.

Manchester United set to make a move for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil

Manchester United are ready to make a move for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, with the midfielder yet to tie his future to the Gunners, according to The Sun.

The Germany international has been in superb form this season and has helped the Gunners make an appreciable impact following their opening day disappointment, but he is yet to agree a new deal with Arsenal, which could see United sneak in, the report claims.

Ozil’s current contract expires in 2018 and he is holding out for a huge increase on his £140,000-a-week deal, something the Red Devils would be very willing to offer.

United boss Jose Mourinho has already described Ozil as ‘the best No.10 in the world’, when the pair worked together at Real Madrid and the Portuguese would surely love a reunion with the 28-year old and the prospect of pairing him with Paul Pogba in midfield.

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has cried out that Chile are in danger of making a ‘suicidal decision’ which could rule out star man Alexis Sanchez out for up to three months.

Sanchez was ruled out of Chile’s game with Colombia but have instead kept him in Santiago for treatment in the hope he may be fit to face Uruguay on Tuesday, rather than send him back to London.

The Gunners’ boss has revealed that he has been told that Sanchez has suffered a hamstring injury rather than a calf problem while away on international duty, and is now ready to go to war with the Chilean FA to stop them from taking any chances on Sanchez by playing him and making the injury worse.

Rooney rejected move from Manchester United to China.

Wayne Rooney’s agent met with Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan, according to the club’s chairman

Wayne Rooney said he wanted to stay at Manchester United when offered a move to China, says Beijing Guoan’s honorary chairman.

Lou Ning claims the Chinese Super League side approached the 31-year-old United captain in the summer, and met with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford ahead of the new Premier League season.

However, according to Ning, Rooney has shown a desire to remain in the English top-flight until factors out of his control determine otherwise.

“We indeed made an approach for Rooney at the beginning of the season but he’s informed us that he wants to stay in Manchester United,” Ning told a Beijing radio sports show.

“Rooney says he’ll keep playing in the Premier League as long as his health allows. We even met with his agent.”

Jose Mourinho has left Rooney out of his starting line-up on a number of occasions this season, while the England skipper also lost his place in interim manager Gareth Southgate’s team.

Rooney is under contract at United until 2019 and Mourinho has insisted the former Everton striker is “going nowhere”, despite being linked with a move back to the Toffees as well as abroad.

Ronald Koeman also fuelled suggestions Rooney could return to where he began his career when the Dutchman admitted he would be pleased to have him back at Goodison Park.

Jose Mourinho reveals why he may be forced to drop Wayne Rooney again

Rooney could be left out of Manchester United’s Europa League starting lineup after Jose Mourinho claimed he needs to “protect” the striker.

Rooney was dropped for last Saturday’s rout of Leicester and has not trained fully this week due to a back injury.

The England captain returned to training today at Carrington and United manager Mourinho will discuss whether he should start against Ukraine side Zorya Luhansk or be on the substitutes’ bench.

But Mourinho is mindful that the endless debate over Rooney’s form means he must carefully weigh up whether he will be able to perform to his best.

“Wayne Rooney is selected (in the squad). I did not decide yet if I start with him,” said Mourinho.

“He didn’t train yesterday. He did just a little bit of the session on Monday. He had a back problem. So today was the first time he had a training session with the other players and today it was a training session where the intensity and complexity is obviously reducing because we have a game tomorrow.

“I am not sure if I will play him from the start because of the situation you (the media) created with him.

“He can’t afford to have a performance that is not really good.

“Because I am here to protect him, and not to put him in difficult situations, I have to analyse whether the best thing for him is to start the game if he is not totally ready for it.

“So I am going to discuss that with him and the medical staff and decide whether he starts or is on the bench.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luke Shaw will both be absent, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic will start as United look to recover from their opening group defeat to Feyenoord.

“It is very important,” said Mourinho, who intends to play a strong team. “To be honest I think we have to win.

“If we don’t win we have four matches and we would have to win all of the last four matches, which is difficult. I think tomorrow it is very important that we win the game.”

“My Brief Spell At Manchester United Has Made Me A Better Manager” – Moyes

David Moyes believes he was harshly treated by former club Manchester United as he looks ahead to his tenure with Sunderland.

Fronting the media as Sunderland manager, Moyes opened up on his time at Old Trafford, where he was sacked less than a season into a six-year deal with the Premier League giants.

However, Moyes – who was ultimately replaced by Louis van Gaal ahead of the 2014-15 campaign – has now hit back at his former employers after his move to the Stadium of Light.

“I’ve said all along that I was (unfairly treated). When you sign a six-year contract and you end up there ten months, yeah, I believe I was,” said the Scot.

“But that is life in football. Ultimately the key is to win football matches. I didn’t win enough football matches.

“You must say there were mitigating circumstances. And I think you could say there are maybe things that have gone on since then, that would actually justify that even more so.”

Nevertheless, Moyes believes that his brief spell at United did wonders for his career.

“It gave me an unbelievable idea of what it is at the top,” he added.

“I believe that’s where I can work and that’s where I should be working, and my level is that, because that is what I saw in the time I was there.

“You don’t get offered those jobs, you don’t get offered big jobs, if you’ve not done something. You don’t get offered the Real Madrid job, the Barcelona job, the Manchester United job, if you’ve not had something to suggest that there’s a reason for that job.

“Yeah I am better [as a manager]. I have had several opportunities, big ones, but timing is so positive. The timing for this job at Sunderland was right. It feels good to me.”

After being fired from Old Trafford, Moyes went on to coach Real Sociedad in La Liga, where he was also sacked after a promising start.

I’m Joining Manchester United– Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic said on Thursday that he is joining Manchester United, ending intense speculation about where the 34-year-old Swedish superstar forward will be playing next season.

Ibrahimovic, who was a free agent after ending a hugely successful stay at Paris Saint-Germain, becomes the second signing of new United boss Jose Mourinho after that of highly rated Ivory Coast centre-back Eric Bailly from the Spanish outfit Villarreal.

“Time to let the world know. My next destination is Manchester United,” he wrote on Instagram and Facebook, complete with a picture of the United badge, as comments approving of the move — one of the biggest of the summer so far — flooded in.

Ibrahimovic reunites with Mourinho, after they enjoyed a good relationship while together at Italians Inter Milan, in what is likely to be the last major move in a career spanning five countries, starting with Malmo.

The towering Swede, who hit 62 goals in 116 international matches, had toyed with questioners for weeks about where he would be going and it will be his first time playing in the Premier League.

Ibrahimovic, who quit international football after Sweden crashed out of Euro 2016, has also played at Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona and AC Milan during a career in which he has become as well known for his colourful personality as his prowess in front of goal.

He had also been linked with a return to AC Milan and his agent had suggested that Major League Soccer in the United States was another potential destination.

Wenger: ‘World-class’ Ozil Needs To Score More Goals

The Germany international scored against Manchester United and Bayern Munich but the former Monaco boss feels that he needs to continue finding the net as well as creating chances.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed the “world-class” Mesut Ozil but says that the playmaker needs to score more goals.

Ozil has provided six assists in eight Premier League appearances but has scored just one top-flight goal this season.

The £42 million midfielder scored in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday night and Wenger has now challenged him to produce more in front of goal.

“A player of his calibre, you want him to add goals to his assists. He is world class,” Wenger told reporters.

The Gunners take on Everton on Saturday and the manager will be forced to make changes to his side after the hamstring injury suffered by Aaron Ramsey in midweek.

Wenger says that Ramsey is expected to miss three or four weeks of action and is joined on the sidelines by Mikel Arteta but that defender Gabriel is fully fit and available for selection.

The Frenchman has not decided whether to start with Theo Walcott or Olivier Giroud up front but wants a repeat of the memorable performance that his side produced against Bayern.

He added: “The most important thing is [the strikers] contribute goals. You have to accept no club in the world can play one striker for the whole season.

“You want to do well in the big games at home. We want to produce the same performance again.”

Sergio Ramos signs new five-year deal with Real Madrid

29-year-old Real Madrid defender, Sergio Ramos, has shut down speculations of moving to Manchester United this summer  after signing a deal to stay with the club until 2020.

In a statement,  he said…

“I know this renewal has taken a while but my heart and head have always been with Real Madrid so I couldn’t be happier,” explained Ramos at a press conference on Monday, standing alongside Perez.

“Whatever the press want to say I respect but the reality is a bit different.

“I have never said I wanted to leave Real Madrid, my idea was to always be here and I always wanted to retire here.

“Honestly, if it was an economic decision I wouldn’t have stayed. It wasn’t a question of money.

“I was quiet. I never said anything out of respect for my team-mates. I want to stay here for the rest of my career.”

Ramos joined Madrid from Sevilla in 2005 and has won La Liga three times, the Copa del Rey twice and the 2014 Champions League during his time at the Bernabeu.

FUMBLING EAGLES, MANCHESTER IS STILL UNITED, CHELSEA CRUISE, ARSENAL’S BLIP AND THE AUSSIES

The so called Super Eagles finally met their waterloo against a depleted Ghana team. Their pretense to the semi finals of the Nations cup was finally exposed when they were shown the better way to play the game against the Ghanaians. It is a regular thing for Nigeria to get to the semi-finals of the African cup so Amodu will not come over here to tell us he has done enough to lead to South Africa. 2010. He needs to work with someone who is more technically adept and who will be ready to motivate this obviously limited footballers we deceive by calling Eagles. More on this later but I already stated my position on another article

They may be neck deep in depth but Manchester United will be at Wembley for the umpteenth time. They may not yet be backed by sort of money their neighbours can call on whenever there is a need for that but still they showed to us again, there is still only one united and only one king in Manchester and you know who it was and still is, Manchester United Football Club. Carlos Tevez scored three goals against his old club but those were not enough to deny United yet another shot at a trophy. Man U laughs last but not because they didn’t get the humour but because they chose to strike when it mattered most, at the tail end of the two legged affair when the venom of losing would sting harder on their city rivals. Wayne Rooney’s stoppage time header was enough what they needed to deny City a final appearance at any competition for 29 years. When Tevez levelled the tie at three apiece with an exquisite backheel flick in the 76th minute, his celebrations showed how much he believed the tie had been saved but aren’t United the masters of late goals? When Wayne Rooney is hot, no goal keeper can stop him, not even an inspired Shay Given
The Craig Bellamy coin incident may have taken a little shine off United victory but no one will remember that when they file out against Aston Villa next month in London. United have once more put City in their place.
Chelsea brought Birmingham back to earth after their over three months long unbeaten league run. The game ended 3 nil with Frank Lampard earning a brace after Malouda set them on the right path. That was birmingham’s first loss since losing 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates in October. Arsenal on their part found the bar, the post but not the back of the net as they could only manage a nil-all draw with Aston Villa. They will be hoping for a better result against Manchester United this Sunday at the Emirates . There were also wins for Everton, Blackburn .
To the Australian Open, Justine Henin will face defending champion Serena Williams in the final of the Australian Open after both women won their semi-finals in straight sets.
Williams reached her fifth Melbourne final with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-1) win over China’s 16th seed Li Na.
And wildcard Henin then thrashed the unseeded Zheng Jie 6-1 6-0 in the day’s second semi-final.
Henin is playing only her second tournament since coming out of retirement after 18 months away.
And the Belgian is now one win from emulating compatriot Kim Clijsters, who won the US Open last September in her first Grand Slam event since ending her own spell out of the game.
This weekend I will love to be at the Emirates in London but that won’t happen so I will be watching Manchester United take on Arsenal at home. Y’all know what’s at stake…Have all the fun you can get, celebrate your victories BIG or small.cheers
