Voigt wants D’Tigers coaching role full-time

Coach of Nigeria’s men basketball team, Will Voigt, has expressed his confidence that he will sign a new deal to continue coaching the team.

The 40-year-old led D’Tigers to their first-ever continental title at AfroBasket 2015 and led the team to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Voigts has been in charge on a temporary basis, but wants the job full time.

“I am very hopeful of getting everything in place soon with the federation so I can begin the preparations for the AfroBasket this summer,” he told FIBA.com.

“I’ve said all along I would love for the position to be full time, to be able to invest all of my time and effort on growing the game in Nigeria and that’s from the bottom up, from the grass roots system, working with our youth teams, doing clinics, working with our coaches.

“That’s how I would like to see that job. As of right now, the job has only been part-time and for qualifying tournaments.”

Voigts is currently coaching in China with CBA side Shanxi Dragons.

Why Ifeanyi Uba FC sacked Japanese Coach — Club owner

The Chairman of FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Chukwuma Ubah, has given detailed reasons why Kenichi Yatshuhashi was relieved of his jobs as the Head Coach of the Nigeria Professional Football League side.

The billionaire businessman stated that the decision was taken in good faith after players and fans had become disgruntled and disillusioned by Kenichi’s display of technical incompetence, regressive training regime and disregard for the Management, the Chairman of the Anambra based club.

“You do know we are a very professional outfit, driven by excellence while aiming for success and achievement of any stipulated goal at any point in time,” said Mr. Ubah.

“When the position of the Head Coach became vacant, we immediately swung into action to scout the planet for the perfect man for the job who had the right experience, passion, vision and above all, team spirit in order to help us achieve our lofty ambitions in the forthcoming season,” he said.

“We identified acting Head Coach, Black Stars of Ghana, Yaw Preko, who we believed had a reputable pedigree to take our club to the next level. However, Yaw Preko whom we held in high regards suggested Kenichi Yatsuhashi to us based on his previous working relationship with him and we adhered – which Yaw Preko who is still with us can attest to. This was the biggest mistake we made as we failed to carry out our due diligence on whom we sought to employ, depending solely on the recommendation of his former assistant.

“All demands, financial and otherwise made by Kenichi were met by the club, including all the requests which the club deemed as exorbitant and irrelevant. We did all we could to make him comfortable as we wanted results.

“The first red flags were raised when Kenichi started disbanding the team, leaving out our major star players including national team players Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Stephen Eze, Adeleye Olamilekan, Tamen Medrano, Kojo Baah, Wasiu Jimoh amongst a host others. This action led to the exit of some of our core players who were frustrated at being frozen out, notably Ismaila Gata, Bello Koformata and Okereke Maduabuchi. While we got torrents of complaints from the players, we allowed him to take his chosen and preferred route as we felt he had a masterplan. His training regimes were strange as he totally eliminated aerobics while insisting that the players undergo massive weight lifting, lifting weights as heavy as 100kg across 100 metres, culminating in lots of injuries. While all these were not approved by the club, we overlooked his actions on the back of his assumed expertise.”

Kenichi Yatsuhashi did not last beyond 30 days at FC Ifeanyi Ubah as he was sent packing even before the NPFL Super 4 Tournament held in Enugu.

On the direction of the club, Chukwuma Ubah assured fans of FC Ifeanyi Ubah that the goals and interest of the club will remain paramount. “Our fans should rest assured that all decisions taken and executed by the club are driven with the best interests of the Club at heart. The Club is moving in the right direction and nothing will be made to derail or stunt the progress we have made.

With the new season slated to kick off on the 7th of January 2017 with a match against Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium being the first hurdle for the Warriors, fans of FC Ifeanyi Ubah will be hoping for a winning start.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah will be looking to improve on the league record finish of 4th last season and at least advance to the latter stages of the CAF Confederations Cup which will see the Anambra Warriors make their continental debut.

I was sexually abused by my football coach for four years – Paul Stewart

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Paul Stewart and two other ex-players have come forward to allege sexual abuse at the hands of youth coaches when they were children.

Stewart, capped three times by England, said he was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a man who threatened to kill his family if he told anyone.

The 52-year-old, who also played for Liverpool and Manchester City, joins former Crewe Alexandra players Andy Woodward and Steve Walters in speaking out about abuse they suffered.

“The mental scars led me into other problems with drink and drugs,” Stewart told Wednesday’s Daily Mirror.

“I know now it was a grooming process. The level of abuse got worse and worse.

“I wanted people to know how difficult it was to come forward. It stirred up a lot of my past which I thought I had buried.”

Stewart, a married father of three, said other players were also abused by the man, who was not named.

Stewart was encouraged to speak out after Woodward told The Guardian he had suffered years of abuse at the hands of convicted paedophile Barry Bennell, a former youth coach at Crewe.

Bennell was jailed for nine years in 1998 after pleading guilty to sexual offences against young boys.

He was imprisoned for two years in May 2015 for a historic sexual offence against a boy and has also spent time in jail in the United States.

Cheshire Police, responsible for policing the Crewe area, said six people had come forward saying they wanted to speak to police in the light of Woodward’s interview.

– ‘Immense courage’ –

Woodward told The Guardian: “My life has been ruined until the age of 43, but how many others are there?

“I’m talking about hundreds of children who Barry Bennell cherry-picked for various football teams and who now, as adults, might still be living with that awful fear.”

Walters, who became Crewe’s youngest debutant in 1988, said he had also been abused by Bennell.

“All these years, I’ve had this secret inside me,” he told The Guardian.

“But I have to let it all out now. It’s the only way. I want closure and I know, for a fact, this is going to help me move on.”

Based in northwest England and currently in England’s fourth tier, Crewe have a well-established reputation for developing young players.

Crewe chairman John Bowler, who was in position at the time of Bennell’s offences, told the BBC the club were “distressed” by the accusations and would review the situation.

He added he was “very sorry for the distress caused” to Woodward and Walters.

Woodward has been praised for speaking out by Britain’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

“It is time for the government and sports organisations to work together to close gaps in child protection and make sure that the thousands of sports clubs across the country have robust safeguarding policies in place,” said an NSPCC spokesman.

England’s Football Association has set up a helpline for former players to report abuse.

In a joint statement, the FA, the Premier League and the Football League described Woodward’s story as “heartbreaking” and praised his “immense courage”.

Lagos Football Club Manager Arrested for Defiling Teenage Players

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a football club manager, Frank Darlington, for allegedly sodomizing three of his teenage players in the Agege area of the state.

It was gathered that Darlington, the manager of Soccer Warriors Football Academy, Pen Cinema, was arrested last Thursday by the Elere Police Division after one of the victims reported him to the police.

Darlington, a native of Imo State, allegedly took three footballers to his house on separate occasions after training sessions and sodomized them.

The police said the suspect allegedly penetrated the victims’ anuses and would be charged for sodomy.

The suspect told newsmen that he started to rape his players in February 2015.

He added that he committed the act to derive pleasure.

He said, “I have a female daughter, and she is three years old. I manage the Soccer Warriors Football Academy in the Pen Cinema, Agege area. It was in February 2015 that the rape started. I usually had sex with my boys just to play with them. It was romance. We had fun together. The last one I did was in July 2016, knowing that it could get me into trouble.

“I slept with only three of my footballers. There was one of my boys that had not been coming for training since last week. When I asked him, I was told that he was sick. I did not know that he had reported to his mother and she had told the police.

“I do not know what moved me to be sleeping with them. I have been coaching for about 12 years. My wife stays in the South-East. She left me in March 2016. The sex with the boys was not for any ritual. I only derived fun from it.

“I knew it was a crime and that was why I stopped this act since July. I pledged not to go back into this.”

One of the victims, Kehinde (pseudonym), told Punch that Darlington threatened him that he (Kenny) would die if he told anyone about the sodomy.

The 18-year-old said he was forced to tell his mother when Darlington made it a habit.

He said, “He always had sex with me and with most of us. He started last year. The first time he approached me was after a training session. We were on the football pitch and he said my performance was bad and I should meet him at home for a discussion.

“When I went, he and two boys were at home. His wife did not stay with him. He sent the two boys on an errand and asked me to come into his room. He then instructed me to remove my trousers, and he molested me.

“He did not use any protection. He did not give me any money, but he threatened that I would die if I told anyone. I cannot count how many times he had done this to me. I told my mother when I was tired of his abuse. My mother reported him at the police station.”

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the club manager, said the suspect would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.

“There is no place for criminals to hide in the state. We enjoin the residents of Lagos to report suspicious movements and persons to the police,” he added.

Rohr success with Eagles, proof that foreign coaches work best for Nigeria – Babayaro

Former Super Eagles left-back, Celestine Babayaro is pleased with the current form and spirit in the Nigerian squad and their style of play under new manager, Gernot Rohr, saying it brings back memories of the glory days of Nigerian football.

The Franco-German coach, since assuming the post of the Nigerian technical adviser, has won all three games he has handled as coach, starting from the 1-0 win over Tanzania to the 2-1 and 3-1 win over Zambia and Algeria respectively.

Babayaro, who was one of Dutchman, Jo Bonfrere’s 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold winning Under-23 team, said the success of Rohr in the three games he handled so far has proven right, the assertions that foreign coaches are the best for Nigeria.

According to him, “The performances of the team under Rohr is a strong proof that foreign coaches work best for Nigeria.

“There’s an identity to the team and how they play. It’s like watching the 94 Eagles all over again.

“It is not rocket science but the team has evolved under him. They play with a whole lot of confidence and above all defensively they have the mentality of the German defence. Very mean.”

Referee robbed us against Eagles in Uyo – Algeria coach

Algeria coach Georges Leekens claims the Desert Foxes were robbed by Gambian referee Bakary Gassama against the Super Eagles in their Russia 2018 World Cup Group B qualifier in Uyo on Saturday.

Chelsea right wing-back Victor Moses struck a brace as Nigeria beat Algeria 3-1 to pick up their second win in the World Cup qualifiers and open up a four-point lead at the top of the table – after Cameroon were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Zambia in the group’s other fixture.

The North Africans, who have just a point after two games, are left with a mountain to climb to keep alive their chances of qualifying for the World Cup for the fifth time, having played in the tournament in 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014.

And the Greens’ Belgian manager Leekens, who vowed the 1990 African champions would strive to get their qualification hopes back on track, believes the result of the Uyo encounter could have been different had the referee not accepted Nigeria’s second goal from Mikel Obi when the score was 1-0.

Mikel, who is out of favour at Chelsea, fired in from close range three minutes before half time after receiving a through-ball from Oghenekaro Etebo with the Algeria defence attempting keep him offside.

“Nigeria’s second goal is not valid. There was indeed an offside position,” the 67-year-old former Belgium manager was quoted as saying by the influential Algerian newspaper Le Buteur on Sunday.

“The goal somewhat disorganised my players, especially before the break. If the score had remained 1-0, we would have returned in the second half.”

Lekeens says he is disappointed his team did not take their chances in the clash, lamenting a lack of killer instinct among his forwards.

He said, “When you play at this level, you do not allow yourself to miss many good opportunities in front of goal. We missed no fewer than four chances. In a match like this and against an opponent like Nigeria, it was necessary to have a better efficiency. “

The former Lokeren manager refused to blame his team’s defeat on injuries to key players ahead of the fixture.

Leekens added, “Let us also not forget that we played a quality Nigerian team. We found it difficult against them. This is what explains the result.”

#Rio2016: Coach Accuses Seven Countries Of Systematic Doping

Germany’s weightlifting coach has called for seven countries currently competing at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games to be banned from international competition — and named an eighth — for doping abuse.

“Besides Russia and Bulgaria (who are already banned from weightlifting at the Rio Games), many other countries also have systematic doping,” Germany’s coach Oliver Caruso told daily newspaper Bild.

“Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine should also be banned.

“These countries are robbing us of starting places (for other athletes), perhaps even medals.”

In an explosive interview, given to Bild in the Olympic village in Rio, Caruso also pointed the finger at Azerbaijan, who have no weightlifters competing in Rio after being stripped of two spots by the sport’s governing body last month.

“In Kazakhstan, there have been 27 positive doping cases since 2012, in Azerbaijan there have been 24 — and so it goes on,” said Caruso.

“Kazakhstan and Belarus should have been banned (due to the number of doping cases) for a year before the Olympics, but that will only come after the Games.

“It’s like they’re winding us up.

“Some get banned, some come back from a ban and can start again.

“That doesn’t help much, because they’ll probably be back again in time for the next world championships.”

Caruso’s words come after a Kazakh weightlifter Nijat Rahimov, who only completed a two-year doping ban last year, smashed a world record to claim Olympic gold on Wednesday.

Caruso says the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should take a tougher stance on any nation with a track-record of systematic doping.

“My Brief Spell At Manchester United Has Made Me A Better Manager” – Moyes

David Moyes believes he was harshly treated by former club Manchester United as he looks ahead to his tenure with Sunderland.

Fronting the media as Sunderland manager, Moyes opened up on his time at Old Trafford, where he was sacked less than a season into a six-year deal with the Premier League giants.

However, Moyes – who was ultimately replaced by Louis van Gaal ahead of the 2014-15 campaign – has now hit back at his former employers after his move to the Stadium of Light.

“I’ve said all along that I was (unfairly treated). When you sign a six-year contract and you end up there ten months, yeah, I believe I was,” said the Scot.

“But that is life in football. Ultimately the key is to win football matches. I didn’t win enough football matches.

“You must say there were mitigating circumstances. And I think you could say there are maybe things that have gone on since then, that would actually justify that even more so.”

Nevertheless, Moyes believes that his brief spell at United did wonders for his career.

“It gave me an unbelievable idea of what it is at the top,” he added.

“I believe that’s where I can work and that’s where I should be working, and my level is that, because that is what I saw in the time I was there.

“You don’t get offered those jobs, you don’t get offered big jobs, if you’ve not done something. You don’t get offered the Real Madrid job, the Barcelona job, the Manchester United job, if you’ve not had something to suggest that there’s a reason for that job.

“Yeah I am better [as a manager]. I have had several opportunities, big ones, but timing is so positive. The timing for this job at Sunderland was right. It feels good to me.”

After being fired from Old Trafford, Moyes went on to coach Real Sociedad in La Liga, where he was also sacked after a promising start.

A Mexican ‘drug ballad’ singer killed his daughter’s basketball coach as revenge for leaving her out of the team.

Angelico Reyes opened fire on Guillermo Cordero, 33, after being told his daughter could not be in the starting team – or even a substitute – because she arrived late.
The 11-year-old student had hoped to play a local team at a university court in Oaxaca city, southwest Mexico, but was told to sit out after her family failed to arrived on time.

Children’s Football Coach At Chelsea Repeatedly Raped School Girl Atleast 15 Times

A children’s coach at Chelsea repeatedly raped a 12-year-old girl at their training centre in Surrey, a court has heard.

Shane Hughes, 31, allegedly abused the girl 15 times over four months in a physiotherapy room, where she was supposed to be getting treatment for a knee injury.

Prosecutor John Livingstone told the court that the first attack happened after he told her to take her clothes off and get on the massage table.

Mr Livingstone added: ‘She said “No, what is happening?” He then pushed her back on the massage table and told her not to scream and, though she did, he put his hands over her mouth and forced her clothes off.’

It alleged that he raped the girl and forced her to perform a sex act, Kingston Crown Court heard.

Hughes, who is the Premier League club’s children’s coach, is said to have carried out the offence in 2011 at their training headquarters in Cobham, Surrey.

The girl is now 16 years old, and Hughes is facing 14 counts of rape in relation to a child under the age of 13. He however denied raping her while the case was adjourned for continuation.

Keshi Finally Returns As Super Eagles’ Coach

Stephen Keshi has been re-engaged as the coach the Super Eagles after nine months the initial deal expired. Keshi’s initial contract ran out at the end of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in July, after Nigeria crashed out in the Round of 16, losing to France.

A new administration of the Nigeria Football Federation was voted in in September with the promise that Keshi’s contract will be renewed without delay. But it too the Amaju Pinnick led NFF till April 21, 2015 to meet the promise, after almost sealing a replacement for Keshi.

Keshi in presence of top NFF executives and the media on Tuesday signed the contract to head the Super Eagles for a two year period. “We lost in the past, we drew and we won. But we have to move forward now. This is a new page in Nigerian football and what happened in the past has happened. I have what it takes to take d country forward,” Keshi said after signing his new two year contract.

“We need the media. I cannot do this alone. I will work with office of the NFF to move our football forward.”

NFF vice President Seyi Akinwunmi explained the reason behind the delay. “The delay in Keshi’s return was occasioned by the elongated and unwarranted crises we had last year. The NFF have agreed to continually sponsor Keshi on refresher courses.”

With the latest development, Keshi will now swing into action as the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup begins in June.
