CBN Plans Financial Services in Villages By 2020

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emeifele yesterday announced plans to render financial services to villages across the country by the end of 2020.

Emefiele who made the disclosure at a two-day CBN fair tagged, “Promoting Financial Stability and Economic Development,” said the CBN now has a Central Complaints Center where customers can present their challenges which would be resolved immediately.

Represented by the Benin Branch Controller, Mr. Richard Jumbo, the CBN governor said it has become pertinent to sensitise the people on their rights and duties as a customer, urging participants to be dedicated to preaching the CBN gospel of actualising a full cashless society by the year 2020.

According to him, “The banking sector has improved to the extent that you can buy and transfer money with your phone. You can use your ATM to pay for goods in shops through POS.
He said the programme was also aimed at teaching those looking for loan for agriculture and business to be taught how to get the loan.

His words: “We want to bring financial services to the villages that there are things that can be done with the phone not when you want money you have to travel for miles to another town. Now you can seat in your house and send any amount of money you want to send. Now the Central Bank has a channel where you have your complaints and they will be resolved”.

On his part, the Deputy Director and Leader of the Team, MrSam Okojie who spoke on handling the currency said the naira need to be treated with respect as the cost of producing the currency is higher than the denomination itself.

He reiterated that the sales of currency on the streets is punishable by the law setting up the apex bank, noting that a total of 17 states have been covered so far on the preaching of the need to keep the naira clean and neat.

According to him, “We are here as part of efforts to bring our initiative closer to the people and sensitise the masses. We are moving from state to state, lack of information or misinformation is a problem.

Many people are not aware so we have thought it wise to move out, meet the people, explain to them what we are doing, let them ask their questions and they will get feedback.
“We have covered about 17 states, we have gone round and we are going second round with Cross Rivers remaining.”

NCC Explains Proposal, Reversal Of Plans To Hike Data Price

The Nigerian Communications Commission on Wednesday announced the immediate suspension of the new minimum pricing template for data services by mobile operators in the country.

The director, Public Affairs at the NCC, Tony Ojobo, said the decision to rescind its earlier directive to telecom operators to commence charging the new floor price rate for data from December 1, was to allow for further consultation with industry interest groups.

“Following concerns that visited the directive to introduce price floor for data segment of the telecommunications sector beginning from December 1, 2016, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has suspended any further action in that direction,” Mr. Ojobo said in a statement.

“The decision to suspend this directive was taken after due consultation with industry stakeholders and the general complaints by consumers across the country.”

Mr. Ojobo said the Commission has already asked all operators to maintain the status quo until the conclusion of study to determine retail prices for broadband and data services in the country.

Prior to the suspension, Nigerians had raised concerns about the impropriety of the decision by government to hike price of data at this time.

Several Nigerians accused the NCC of insensitivity, considering the high cost of living in the face of the current economic recession in the country.

Social media users expressed fears the government planned to limit citizens’ access to the Internet.

Donald Trump Reveals What He Plans To Do 100 Days In Office (WATCH VIDEO)

Nearly two weeks after winning the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump has yet to hold a single news conference — an unprecedented move for the president-elect and a sign his administration will likely be one of the least accessible to the press (and therefore the public) in recent history.

Dodging reporters altogether, the president-elect instead opted to release a “video message” on Monday via the Transition 2017 social media channels, explaining his plans for his first 100 days in office and giving a brief, non-update about how the transition is going.

As with his campaign, in the video, Trump claims his overarching goal is to put “America first.” This allegedly entails withdrawing the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership on his first day in office; removing restrictions on energy production; reducing the number of regulations (his idea: with everyone new one, remove two old ones); developing a plan to protect America’s infrastructure from cyber-attacks; investigating “abuses” of all visa programs; and imposing a five-year ban on lobbying.

“These are just a few of the steps we will take to reform Washington and rebuild our middle class,” he said. “I will provide more updates in the coming days, as we work together to make America great again for everyone, and I mean everyone.”

Kuje Riot: NPS Plans Forensic Test On Recovered Handsets

The Nigerian Prisons Service would subject handsets and SIM cards that were recovered from the Kuje Prison inmates including a Boko Haram prisoner to forensic analysis.

It was learnt that the analysis would allow the authorities to determine who the inmates had been communicating with while in custody.

The service had seized about 25 cell phones from the inmates on Monday resulting in a riot, which led to the lockdown of the facility.

The officers fired gunshots and tear gas to subdue the unruly inmates.

The NPS’ Public Relations Officer, Francis Enobore, said that the seized handsets would be subjected to analysis after which a full investigation would commence to determine how the handsets found their way into the prison cells.

Enobore explained that cell searching operation was normal, adding that the prison authorities usually carried out periodic and routine searches of cells, workshops and other places the inmates could hide weapons or prohibited substances.

He said, “The seized objects will be subjected to analysis after which a report would be collated and necessary investigation initiated; that is the tradition. Indicted officers will also be sanctioned.

“The analysis of the phones will help us to know who the inmates have been talking with; this will give you a good lead on the investigation. When you hear cases of riots or jailbreaks, it is usually carried out through unauthorised communication. That is why the CG has made it very clear that he will not tolerate trafficking of banned materials in the prisons.

“Our existence as the prisons service rests on our ability to maintain tight security in the prisons and the CG is bent on ensuring that any trafficking of articles will not be tolerated.”

Enobore added that any officer indicted for bringing the prohibited materials into the prison yard would be sanctioned.

“Am not denying that some unscrupulous members of staff may be involved, but there are so many means through which unauthorised articles go into the prisons — from relatives, lawyers and even our members of staff.

“If you don’t have people compromising standards, where will the inmates have access to these banned articles?” he said.

The spokesman observed that it was normal for the inmates to resist the search because they were always looking out for things that could aid their escape from custody.

“From time to time, we carry out searches and remove these things; there is nothing unusual in finding all these things (banned materials). You are keeping people against their wishes, and it is natural for them to want to look for things they could use to escape incarceration,” he stated.

$321m Abacha Loot: Govt Sends Plans To Switzerland

In line with Switzerland’s request, the Federal Government has submitted five proposals on how it will spend the $132million Abacha loot if returned.

Switzerland had asked for how the cash would be spent before releasing it.

The proposals are based on social benefit projects to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

The government is, however, weighing options on another condition bordering on the payment of monitoring fees to the World Bank on five projects.

To cut cost, the government is thinking of reducing the projects to two for the World Bank to monitor.

If the $321million loot is released, the amount to be repatriated to Nigeria by the Swiss authorities will amount to $1.044billion in 11 years.

Switzerland has released $723million to the country in the last 10 years.

But, a matter before a court by a Nigerian lawyer based in the United States (U.S.) has stalled the return of $480 million by the American government.

But both the U.S. and the Federal Government are collaborating to overcome the legal hurdles at the appeal court.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN)  said that the government was trying to meet the terms of Switzerland.

Malami said: “We got a request from Switzerland that we should provide a list of projects that we will spend the $321million on.

“The government has done its homework and submitted five proposals that have bearing with social benefit projects.

“Some of the projects have been captured in this year’s budget. They will impact on all Nigerians.

“They wrote back to us on the fact that they will want the World Bank to be directly involved in the monitoring of the projects with a caveat that we have to pay monitoring fees.

“We have not come to terms with paying monitoring fees for all the projects. We have not taken any decision to pay the bills for all the projects or to restrict the payment to two of the projects,

“We are already collaborating with World Bank on three projects which will accelerate the nation’s development.”

Plateau Plans Naming Ceremony For Lion Named After Gov. Lalong

The Ministry of Tourism in Plateau on Saturday said it was planning an elaborate naming ceremony for its new “Lion King Lalong” brought in from the Sanda Kyarimi Zoo in Maiduguri.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Peter Mwankon, told newsmen in Jos that the prime beast was named after Gov. Simon Lalong in appreciation of his commitment to the tourism sub-sector of the state’s economy. He said that the one-and-half-year-old cub replaced the older lion killed last year following its escape from cage during routine feeding in the Jos Wildlife Park.

Mwankon added that authorities regretted the killing of the lion which was due to some limiting circumstances. He explained that the involvement of marksmen from the military and the police in tracking and killing the lion was to save the immediate community from danger as it could have turned untamed. The commissioner said it was unfortunate that some animal rights campaigners claimed that the act constituted cruelty to animals.

He noted that the new replacement was through a trade by barter with the Sanda Kyarimi Zoological Park in Maiduguri, Borno, to add to the tourism potential of the Jos Wildlife Park. He described the lion as a prime attraction to the park, expected to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue and developmental projects.

He gave an assurance that the management of the park had put modalities in place to forestall animals escaping from their cages within the park. “The administration of Gov. Simon Lalong is poised to ensure the escape saga of last year does not occur again and more varieties of animals are acquired.

“The state government is also working toward getting tranquilizers in quelling animals when an escape incident occurs rather than kill them.

“Such drugs require some bureaucratic process to get because of its function.” Besides, he said, more personnel were being trained on captivity skills, animals’ husbandry and other related skills to build their capacity in discharging their duties.

Boko Haram: FG Plans To Recharge Lake Chad At Estimated Cost Of $15bn

The Federal Government has successfully conducted a feasibility study towards recharging the Lake Chad through inter-basin water transfer from Congo basin at an estimated cost of $15 billion.

This is part of the projects envisioned to transform the region into a more stable economic hub after the counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations against the Boko Haram terrorists in parts of the North-East.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed this at the weekend on the sidelines during the just-concluded 2nd Regional Security Summit in Abuja.

Onyema noted that even though the figure is a rough estimate, it is going to be executed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement when it comes into force.

“We also have the issue of environment and economic activities. Also the issue of recharging the Lake Chad basin, which is extremely expensive. So we will be looking at financiers and the mechanism of Public Private Partnership (PPP).

“Yes, it’s a rough estimate and there is research that was done and the rough patch was that its going to cost $15bn,” he stated.

In the same vein, the Executive Secretary, Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), Engr. Sanusi Abdullahi, gave a few details about the planned inter-basin recharging of Lake Chad as part of grand post-conflict rebuilding projects in the region.

Firm Plans $150 Million Power Project In Plateau

CT Cosmos Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Communication Towers Limited, has disclosed plans to establish a Solar plant power project in Panyam community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State which will cost over $150 million . Chief Operating Officer of the firm, Mr Henry Opara, who led a delegation of the company to meet with the community members at the weekend, said the project when completed will generate over 70 megawatts which he noted would be sufficient to sustain Plateau and neighbouring states. Opara said; “Presently, We have gotten the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, license, and we’ve been shortlisted for Power Purchase Agreement, PPA, with Bulk Energy Purchase Company of Nigeria; the working tools we’ve been awaiting for final take-off to the site.

Once the PPA gets to our hands we would then put a timeline on how to progress with the work, stage by stage. “Because of the high cost of the project, foreign investors are involved; and what they are just waiting for is just the paper from government, and thereafter, I believe before the end of this year, the project should have taken off. Total period for the completion and kick should not be longer than 18 months. He noted that though the Federal Government is involved in the project, it is not funding it; it is a private company initiative.

At the end of the day, the power will be directed to the National Grid and will be sold to the Federal Government. Opara said CT Cosmos has chosen a technical partner in Siemens, a leading supplier of system for power generation and transmission, and global giant in electrification, automation and digitalization for the execution of the solar photovoltaic (PV) project due to the company’s proven expertise in delivering high quality solutions, technical support and services. He said the Solar Farm, which is expected to be completed in about 18 months, will cover a land space of about 103 hectares, where the solar radiation is excellent, and will add-up to Nigeria’s efforts to generate needed power to its citizenry.

Enumerating its many benefits to the Panyam community, Opara said the over $150 million project will bring the comto the world map, provide employment opportunities to the youths that have the capacity, and will take off hazardous CO2 from the air in the community, providing healthy air for the people. The traditional ruler of the community, Mishkaham Panyam, Engineer Aminu Derwam, who was obviously delighted over the intention of the investor, took time to enlighten his subjects of the many benefits accrued to them as host community for the multi-billion naira project. Flanked by his chiefs, including a former member of House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Jonathan, the monarch said he facilitated the meeting of the company with the original land owners in the spirit of transparency so that the company could confirm to the land owners what they are paying as compensation.

The Nigerian Army has announced plans to close designated markets in Yobe and Borno where traders have been found to be aiding Boko Haram terrorists with logistic supplies.

The acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, made the disclosure at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said the plan was part of measures adopted to contain attempts by some unscrupulous elements to sabotage recent gains recorded by the military in the war against insurgency in the northeast.

“It has come to the knowledge of the Nigerian Army that as concerted efforts are being made to finally clear all remnants of Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast, some unscrupulous elements have been thwarting the efforts for pecuniary gains.

“They engage in all manner of illegal commercial activities, such as trading and smuggling, especially during late hours, all aimed at sustaining terrorism and insurgency.

“Consequently, the Nigerian military and, indeed, the Nigerian Army are highly concerned with these unpatriotic acts .

Delta State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned kidnappers in the state to repent from the nefarious actions or be ready to face intense spiritual offensive from the ‘soldiers of Christ’.

The Christian body insisted that if the unholy act of kidnapping persists in the state, it will not hesitate to mobilize Christians for appropriate massive actions against herdsmen suspected to be perpetrators of the act.

CAN was specifically reacting to the recent kidnap and subsequent brutal murder of the Obi of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom in Aniocha South Local Government Area, HRM Akaeze Ofolue III, as well as last weekend kidnap of the traditional ruler of Olomoro Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area, HRM Josiah Aghaza I.

In a statement signed by the state chairman of CAN, Rev. Gideon Oyibo and secretary, Rev. Ole Akokotu, the body said it was worried by the rising spate of kidnapping and condemned the dastard act in strong terms.

The statement also implored calling security agencies in the state to be alive to their responsibilities in nipping the re-occurring but ugly incident in the bud.

CBN Plans Soft Loans For One Million Graduates

The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday announced that a low-interest loan scheme for one million young graduates would commence next year.

The governor said the special loan scheme, which would be managed by the central bank in collaboration with commercial banks, was part of the strategy of the Federal Government to boost the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sub-sector and curtail unemployment among the youth.

Emefiele made the disclosure in Lagos during the opening ceremony of the seventh Annual Bankers’ Committee Retreat.

The CBN governor said, “We need to get more and more people to be employed, and we will need the support of the banks to begin to see how we lower our risk acceptance criteria to give support to our young graduates.

“In the course of the next few weeks, we will be unfolding a plan of support of the CBN to create employment for at least one million young graduates in Nigeria in 2016. That will entail support from Nigerian banks and our development institutions to see how we will channel these concessionary loans to companies that are MSMEs.”

Emefiele said the plunge in commodity prices, especially crude oil, had led to sharp fall in the nation’s revenue, adding that Nigeria and other oil exporting countries were facing hard times, a situation that necessitated the need to diversify the economy away from oil.

Police Uncover Plans To Import Thugs, Arms For Kogi Governorship Poll

The Police said on Friday said it has uncovered plots by some unknown persons to “smuggle in” thugs and ammunitions with the intention to disrupt Saturday’s governorship election in Kogi State.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Leroy Sotonye, who disclosed this while briefing journalists in Lokoja, the state capital, also said travelers going through the state would be restricted, screened and properly searched in order to forestall breakdown of law and order during the poll.

Mr. Sotonye, who was briefing journalists on the rules of the election, urged travelers to either postpone their journeys, seek alternatives routes or go by flight in order to avoid the inconveniences that might be experienced on Election Day.

“If you know you are going to travel through Kogi State, you are advised to either postpone, suspend the trip, go by flight or take alternative routes because you will be stopped by the police,” Mr. Sotonye said.

“We have intelligence that some people are trying to smuggle in thugs and ammunitions and all sorts of things.

“You will be screened and searched. It will be a distraction to the police and we don’t want to be distracted.”

NFF Plans Testimonial For Enyeama

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick has said a testimonial will be organised for Vincent Enyeama, saying he deserves “an honourable exit” from the Super Eagles.

On Saturday, Enyeama returned to Belgium to meet with NFF president Pinnick, NFF 1st Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi and 2nd Vice President Shehu Dikko.
Pinnick told Enyeama in clear terms that the country is bigger than any individual, and that even if he was determined to quit international football, he did not have to do so in a situation of acrimony.

“I told him that he did so well for Nigeria over the past 13-and-half years that he had been there, and by all means, is deserving of a honourable exit,” the NFF boss said.

“Whatever the situation, whether he decides to return to the team or not, the NFF will organise a worthy testimonial match in his honour because he served the nation so well.

“However, the head coach is in full charge of the team and the camp at all times, and that fact must be respected. The NFF will support and respect the decision of the head coach of any of the national teams at all times.

“Both Oliseh and Enyeama are true heroes of Nigeria football, if you look at what they achieved at different times. But Oliseh is head coach now and in charge of the team. We will continue to respect his contract; our role as a federation is advisory.”

Rivers APC Supports Plan To Recover Looted Funds

The All Progressives Congress in the Rivers State welcomed the announcement by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate and recover the funds allegedly looted by the immediate past administration of Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

“We received with great joy news of the resolution by President Buhari to go after those who stole Nigeria blind and virtually grounded the country’s economy,” Rivers APC Chairman, Dr Davis Ibiamu Ikanya, said.

“For six years we shouted ourselves hoarse that Jonathan’s administration was the most corrupt in the history of this nation and sadly nobody believed us but the recent revelations have proved us right.”

Ikanya added, “If not by the grace of God and the resolve of Nigerians to vote out that visionless government, the ship of our nation would have been grounded by now.”

He said the ruling party commended the governments of USA and Britain for supporting the APC Government in its efforts to recover Nigeria’s looted funds stashed in foreign banks by “agents of wickedness.”

Ikanya pleaded with Nigerians to see reason and support the administration of President Buhari in his efforts to clean the rot of the past administration and put our nation on a sound footing.

“The next three months may be hard as predicted by Mr. President but we wish to assure our fellow countrymen and women that these are necessary steps and for the good of our dear country,” Ikanya said.

Dangote Reveals Plans To Buy Arsenal Football Club

Respected businessman, Aliko Dangote, has admitted that he is still interested in buying English Premier League team, Arsenal.

Dangote, who is Africa’s richest man, is worth $15.7billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index and was rebuffed in his attempts to buy a stake in the club in 2010. “I still hope, one day at the right price, that I’ll buy the team,” Dangote said in an interview on a flight between Addis Ababa and Lagos.

“I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won’t want to resist. I know my strategy.”

If the 58-year-old is successful with a future bid, it would make him the first African owner of a club in England. Billionaires like Roman Abramovich (Russia) and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan have purchased Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.

Arsenal is currently valued at £988m ($1.49bn) and Stan Kroenke, owner of the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams holds 67% shares in the club. Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov and Farhad Moshiri, own 30%. Dangote, who has interests in sugar, flour, cement, oil etc, however, says he is not planning to make a bid soon.
