Plateau Plans Naming Ceremony For Lion Named After Gov. Lalong

The Ministry of Tourism in Plateau on Saturday said it was planning an elaborate naming ceremony for its new “Lion King Lalong” brought in from the Sanda Kyarimi Zoo in Maiduguri.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Peter Mwankon, told newsmen in Jos that the prime beast was named after Gov. Simon Lalong in appreciation of his commitment to the tourism sub-sector of the state’s economy. He said that the one-and-half-year-old cub replaced the older lion killed last year following its escape from cage during routine feeding in the Jos Wildlife Park.

Mwankon added that authorities regretted the killing of the lion which was due to some limiting circumstances. He explained that the involvement of marksmen from the military and the police in tracking and killing the lion was to save the immediate community from danger as it could have turned untamed. The commissioner said it was unfortunate that some animal rights campaigners claimed that the act constituted cruelty to animals.

He noted that the new replacement was through a trade by barter with the Sanda Kyarimi Zoological Park in Maiduguri, Borno, to add to the tourism potential of the Jos Wildlife Park. He described the lion as a prime attraction to the park, expected to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue and developmental projects.

He gave an assurance that the management of the park had put modalities in place to forestall animals escaping from their cages within the park. “The administration of Gov. Simon Lalong is poised to ensure the escape saga of last year does not occur again and more varieties of animals are acquired.

“The state government is also working toward getting tranquilizers in quelling animals when an escape incident occurs rather than kill them.

“Such drugs require some bureaucratic process to get because of its function.” Besides, he said, more personnel were being trained on captivity skills, animals’ husbandry and other related skills to build their capacity in discharging their duties.

Another Lion Escapes In Kenya, Mauls Man

A man was injured by a lion that was subsequently shot dead by wildlife rangers as it was roaming outside the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Wednesday.

It is the fourth time this year that lions have roamed outside Nairobi National Park and the second time someone has been injured by a lion in less than two weeks.

The dark-maned male lion was shot by a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger after it hurt a passer-by near Isinya, a built-up area south of the capital where onlookers were gathering to stare at the agitated animal.

“The stray lion that was roaming in Isinya has been shot dead after injuring a person,” said KWS spokesman Paul Udoto.

Udoto said the injured man had been taken to hospital and the animal shot “after it (had) become wild”.

In previous incidents this year the lions have either been herded back to the 117 square kilometre (29,000-acre) park or have returned of their own accord.

The reserve is almost surrounded by a fast-growing city of over three million people.

Earlier this month a 63-year old man was injured when a lion clawed at him close to a busy highway where motorists were honking their horns and snapping photographs and videos as they drove by.

The park is not entirely fenced to enable traditional migration by animals in search of grazing.

The big cats are under growing pressure as one of Africa’s fastest growing cities expands onto ancient migration routes and hunting grounds.

Conservationists say lions lived there before people in the area and are not “escaping” the park nor “straying” into human settlements, rather people have moved into the lions’ habitat.

In mid-February, two lions spent a day wandering through Kibera, a densely-packed city slum, before returning to the park, and days later more lions were spotted in town.

Sorry State Of Caged Animals In Jos Wild Life Park (PHOTOS)

A facebook user shares photos of the sorry state of caged animals in the Jos Wild Life Park. Responding to the report of the missing Lion that escaped confinement earlier today, the facebook user alleged that carnivorous animals are given Eba to eat, adding that it is the reason why the caged lion escaped.

It is not certain whether the eba allegation is a joke or not, but the animals seen behind the cage do not look like lions. They look more like malnourished dogs.

Lion Escapes Unfenced Jos Zoo During Feeding Routine

A tweep reports that a lion is on the loose in Jos. The tweep claims that the lion escaped from his confinement at the Jos Wild Life Park, in Jos South local government of Plateau State.

Mr John Doy, the Acting General Manager, Plateau Toursim Corporation,  confirms the report saying the lion escaped “at about 8 a.m. while it was being fed”.

Doy said that the lion, which had been caged since 1972,“ slipped through the gate of the cage when it was opened for its routine feeding”.

“The animal is still within the vicinity of the Park but our fear is that the Park is not fenced.

“We are struggling to recapture it, but we want members of the public to be vigilant,” he said.

Mugabe Rages Against Killing Of Cecil The Lion

President Robert Mugabe on Monday criticized the killing of Cecil the Lion, saying the animal was a key part of the country’s heritage.

“Our wildlife, all our animals, belong to us. They should not be shot with a gun or with an arrow,” Mugabe told thousands who gathered at a shrine on the outskirts of the capital Harare to commemorate Heroes’ Day.

“Even Cecil the lion is yours. He is dead. He was yours to protect and he [was] there to protect you,” said the ageing president, who is often the target of condemnation over the country’s human rights record.

Adding to the sadness, conservationists had warnedCecil’s six cubs would also likely be killed by a rival male lion seeking to establish dominance in the pride.

“As you probably know, the natural law in lion society is that when a male dies and his weakened coalition is usurped, the new incoming males kill their predecessors’ cubs,” David Macdonald, project manager of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Unit wrote.

Almost $470,000 has been raised so far, Macdonaldsaid, leaving his team “overwhelmed and inspired.”

American philanthropist Tom Kaplan and his wife Daphne have even agreed to pledge around $150,000 to match every dollar raised to help the Oxford team reach a $780,000 goal.

“We have to seize this moment where we can all make a difference,” Tom Kaplan said. “Jimmy Kimmel nailed it: If the tragic, illegal, death of Cecil can lead to the saving of many more lions, then some good can come from tragedy.”

Two Zimbabweans Appear In Court For Helping American Dentist Kill Cecil The Lion

Two Zimbabweans accused of helping an American dentist hunt Cecil the lion have appeared in court amid growing anger over the protected animal’s slaughter. Professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst (right) and local landowner Honest Ndlovu (left) allegedly assisted Dr. Walter Palmer, who has since received death threats, catch and kill the lion.

Dr Palmer claims he had trusted his local guides to meet legal guidelines on his trip to Africa, during which he shot Cecil with a crossbow on July 1 before skinning and beheading him. Continue…

The two Zimbabwean men appeared at Hwange magistrates’ court charged with poaching, about 435 miles west of the capital Harare and were both released on bail of $1,000.

The Zimbabwean prosecutors’ documents accuse Bronkhorst of failing to ‘prevent an unlawful hunt’ and documents say Bronkhorst was supervising while his client, Palmer, shot the animal. The court documents made no mention of Palmer as a suspect.

But Americans while reacting to the killing of the loved lion stormed Dr Palmer’s working place and home leaving different messages there for him. Dr Palmer’s whereabout at the moment is unknown according to reports but he has issued an apology letter which a lot of people say is not enough. See the protests in photos below;

The Real Life Empire Record Company Strikes Back At ‘Empire’

FOX’s new hit, hip-hop show “Empire” was a ratings juggernaut this season, but not everyone is a fan. The show follows the ups and downs of fictional record label Empire Entertainment, and now, the real life Empire Distribution claims that Luscious Lyon’s house of hits is infringing on its trademark.

In particular, the real life Empire is concerned about the show’s no. 1 soundtrack, which has been dominating the iTunes charts since it was released earlier this month, so they have now filed an lawsuit.

“Fox, through the ‘Empire’ program, advertises, distributes, and streams music and sells downloads under the ‘Empire’ mark. This music shares the same search terms as EMPIRE’s music, the musical genres are identical, and the songs and albums are positioned in close proximity in online outlets such as iTunes, Google Play, Amazon.com, and Spotify,” Empire Distribution founder and CEO Ghazi Shami said in a press release sent to MTV News on Wednesday (Mar. 25). “It isn’t just a fictional show; they are functioning as a record label in the real world. This only makes the public confusion worse.”

Empire: Original Soundtrack From Season 1 is distributed by Columbia Records and features popular songs from the show like “Drip Drop” and “You’re So Beautiful.” The tracks are mostly performed by the show’s actors and artists Jussie Smollett and Yazz, but also features tracks from more established musicians like Jennifer Hudson and Rita Ora.

Empire Distribution may not have made as many headlines as FOX’s “Empire,” but the company has made quite a name for itself since it was established in 2010 by partnering with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Migos, Cam’ron and Sage the Gemini to distribute some of their biggest hits independently.

“Empire was started over five years before the first broadcast of the show, the marks are identical, and they sell the same products to the same customers. The significant number of incidents of actual public confusion is disturbing,” said Michael Hobbs, an attorney representing Empire Distribution.

According to the release, the real life Empire reached out to FOX to try and resolve the matter, but now are taking things to court.
