BBC: Nigeria has ‘more female entrepreneurs’ than any country in the world

Nigeria has the highest number of female entrepreneurs in the world, according to BBC.

The organisation spoke with two women who sell moi moi, a traditional meal made from beans, to make a living.

Ayo Megbope started by selling moi moi, but now has a restaurant and a catering service, while Aminat Salau, a market seller is also doing well.

“Forty percent of Nigerian women are entrepreneur, that is higher than anywhere else in the world,” BBC said.

Megbope described her business journey, narrating how she relied on family and friends because traditional financial institutions would not help.

“I started my business about nine years ago with a seed capital of $3. Nine years after, we are turning over about $250,000 annually,” she said.

“My access to education and information has helped me a great deal. Family and friends have also been good to me.

“There have been times that I got stuck and I needed to raise capital and I ran to family and friends because the traditional financial institutions would not listen to me.”

On the other hand, Salau depends on human traffic to determine her sales.

“Sales are good, on some days we sell 60 or 80 wraps in the morning. When we have more time or more people passing by, we sell till late in the evening,” she said.

BBC said it would be difficult for traders like Salau to grow their business.

“Female entrepreneurs in Nigeria often struggle to secure investment, banks normally require collateral, like property, which women often do not have. Without access to capital, it will be difficult for Aminat to grow her business.”

Sade Adu’s daughter officially begins medical transition into a man.

Mackalia ‘Ila’ Adu, the 20-year-old daughter of Nigeria/British Pop singer, Sade, has officially begun transitioning from a female to a man.

Ila, who is the product of a romance between her famous multi-Grammy award winning mum and a Jamaican-American music producer, Bob Morgan, has been very open about her desire to become a man.

The ‘proud’ lesbian who is reported to suffer from ‘gender dysphoria’ (a condition where a person experiences discomfort or distress because there’s a mismatch between their biological sex and gender identity) also flaunts her very committed relationship to her white partner on social media.

Although she has never hidden the fact that she longs to become a man, she excitedly revealed to her 3,503 followers on Instagram that her transition begins today.

She wrote, “Today is the first day of the rest of my life.

04/10/16#shotday#firstshot#finally#selfmademan#transman#proud#yaas#.

As a build up to her final identity as a man, Ila, whose mantra is, ‘I came in like a lamb, but I intend to leave like a lion’, is always clad in only male clothing and footwear. In addition, she has since begun taking male hormones, which has seen her breasts gradually diminish and her voice huskier.

Despite the entire uproar about her daughter’s new identity, her mum, Sade, hasn’t publicly acknowledged Ila’s transition.

Scandal Rocks IDP Camp as Female IDPs Offer Camp Officials Sex For Food

Given the living condition of Internally Displaced Person’s (IDPS’s) in the North East, there is an indication that about 66 percent of camp officials, 28 percent from host communities and 6 percent of elders are sexually molesting the vulnerable ones, a situational

Assessment survey on IDP’s in North-East conducted by NOI Polls has revealed.

NOIPolls, incorporated in 2007 has been in the forefront of championing public opinion research in Nigeria and across the West African sub-region in technical partnership with Gallup (USA).

Among startling revelations from the report is that some of the female IDPs voluntarily offer camp officials sex for food and for freedom of movement within and outside the camps just as others offer themselves for basic female sanitary requirements.

The major aim of the survey was to highlight the controversies surrounding the general welfare of IDP’s in the North-East. It was conducted between July 4th to July 29th, 2016 where a total of 400 contacts attempted the questions.

A breakdown of the report indicated that 190 respondents were drawn from Borno, 128 in Adamawa and 82 in Yobe states.

The respondents were aged between 18 years and above while the face-to-face survey technique enabled NOIPolls to capture the reality of the IDPs.

According to the findings, “Though the provision of firewood is the responsibility of local government areas and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) as stipulated in the Memorandum of

Understanding signed between federal government and state government, thousands of IDP’s including lactating mothers, children and elderly starve due to the absence of firewood.

The survey however revealed increase in social vices at the camps like drug abuse, consumption of illicit drugs, prostitution and petty crime as a result of the general poor welfare and deplorable living conditions of the IDPs.

“There are also rising cases of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDs while some IDP’s had fallen prey to unscrupulous members of host communities who take advantage of their plight to force them into early marriages and even kidnap them for child labour”, the report added.

The report highlighted that 85 percent of IDPs in Adamawa and 84 percent in Yobe are facing incidences of discrimination compared to 76 percent in Borno which was linked to ethnic problems that had existed between the northern and southern Borno natives.

Presenting the survey, the Chief Executive Officer of NOIPolls, Dr Bell Ihua confirmed that only 10 to 20 percent of IDP’s lived in camps while 80 to 90 percent lived in host communities stressing that petty crimes and drug abuse were also on the increase at the camps.

Ihua regretted the rising cases of mortality, which he said that 88 percent IDP’s died on daily basis as was witnessed during the survey adding that there was a cholera outbreak in the camps.

He requested for unannounced presidential visit by Muhammadu Buhari to Maiduguri as a way of boosting the morals of security agencies fighting insurgency in the area even as he advocated for increased funding for the IDP’s.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Civil Society Organisation Network, Borno state, Amb Ahmed Shehu expressed worry over the increasing cases of prostitution at the camps which may result to HIV/ AIDS and other infectious diseases.

“In camps and host communities, women need cash-based assistance to establish livelihoods such as tailoring, processing and selling flour or groundnut oil, milk and among others”, he said.

On his part, the Director of Forefront Media, Mr Mohammed Alfa who is a native of Gwoza called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) to visit Borno state and access the financial impropriety of Borno government towards the starving IDP’s

Troops neutralizes female suicide bomber in Borno (VIEWER DISCRETION)

The Nigerian Army has said it has killed a female suicide bomber who was carrying an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Kara Cattle market axis, Dikwa Local Government Area, Borno State.

In a statement on Monday by Army Spokesperson, Col. Sani Usman, the incident which happened on Sunday led to minor injuries on two soldiers and a Civilian JTF member.

Usman said the troops had suspected the suicide bomber and insisted that she stopped but she refused to.

According to Usman, one of the soldiers shot at her and the IED exploded just as she fell to the ground.

The statement also revealed that some of the Boko Haram remnants now pose as mad men  in order to gain access to some locations especially in Maiduguri.

It urged Nigerians to be vigilant and security conscious especially during the Eid festivities.

The statement read, “On Sunday 11th September 2016, evening, a suspected female suicide bomber was seen approaching troops check point located at Kara Cattle market axis, Dikwa, towards Antul and Mukdala, Dikwa Local Government Area, Borno State.

“She was challenged from afar by the vigilant duty sentry, she refused to stop claiming to be coming from Monguno to see her parents in Dikwa.

“Troops sensing the direction of approach was suspicious and abnormal, fired a shot at her and the sentry gallant sentry was proven right as she was carrying a Person Borne Improvised Explosive Device (PBIED) which exploded with a loud bang, killing her instantly and causing minor injury on 2 soldiers and a Civilian JTF assisting them.

“The injured soldiers and the civilian have been treated and have continued with their duties.

“This incident has shown that there are a few of the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists that are determined to carry out criminal acts to create panic and insecurity in some areas.

“In a related development, there is also very reliable information that remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists now disguise or pretend to be mad men or women in order to gain access to some locations especially in Maiduguri.

“Consequently, all should be very wary of any seemingly mentally unstable or mad men or women found wandering and report same.

“Therefore, it is imperative for all to be more security conscious and vigilant especially during the Eid festivities and public holidays.

“The public are further enjoined to report any suspicious persons or movement to the security agencies.”

Female Genital Mutilation: Two Girls Die After Circumcision.

Freetown – A teenage girl died after undergoing a botched female circumcision in Sierra Leone, police said on Thursday, just days after the death of a 10-year-old girl in Guinea.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is widespread in the neighbouring West African countries, with about 90% of women in both countries undergoing circumcision.

Teenager Fatmata Turay died after she was circumcised in an initiation ceremony in the village of Mabolleh in north Sierra Leone and three women involved, including the girl’s aunt, have been arrested, police said.

“There will be an investigation into the circumstances which led to the death of this girl,” said vice minister of social affairs Rugiatu Turay.

The death comes just days after a 10-year-old girl in Makpozou, a forested area in the south of Guinea, died in similar circumstances, according to the country’s social action ministry.

The child died in a circumcision camp for young girls, the ministry said.

Guinea’s government urged communities that practise FGM to “stop sacrificing the girls”, and said it was committed to the fight against the “vile practice”.

Female circumcision is common in West Africa, where it is considered a female rite of passage and where practitioners can earn up to $50 per girl.

Sierra Leone recently ratified a 2003 African Union protocol that seeks to ban FGM.

Controversy Trails Shekau’s ‘New’ Video, Chibok Girl Female Suicide Bomber

There were indications last night that the latest video purportedly released last week by the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau, might not have emanated from the Boko Haram leader after all.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said that the video, in which Shekau was said to have said that the end of the sect’s campaign was near, was shot about two years ago. The source said the video was actually given out by Shekau to a delegation sent by a top Islamic sect leader, Darun Sijjirah, when he pledged allegiance to the Boko Haram leader.

According to the source, it was not possible for Shekau, leaders of the Islamic State for Africa to have released such a document at this moment. “The video is a fake one intended for ulterior purposes and does not emanate from Shekau,” the source said.

Responding to a question, the source also disputed the claim by a female suicide bomber arrested by the Cameroonian authorities that she was one of the Chibok girls taken by the Boko Haram sect since April 14, 2014.

“The truth is that the female suicide bomber arrested in Cameroun is not one of the Chibok girls,” the man said. It was learned that the release of the video, which the Nigerian military had since dismissed as a possible diversionary tactics by the sect, was causing disquiet in the camps of the sect leaders.

This, coupled with the claim by the female suicide bomber arrested in Cameroun, is believed to have compelled the leadership of the sect to contemplate releasing a statement disputing the two issues and to ‘put the records straight’.

It was learned that the group close to Shekau might issue a disclaimer on the two issues within the week, given the erroneous impression and the controversy they had generated within its camps. Boko Haram has killed over 13,000 persons and abducted many men, women and children in its six-year-old campaign against the Nigerian state, which is seeking to end the activities of the group. Nigeria has also dispatched a group to Cameroun to ascertain if, indeed, the female suicide bomber in its custody belongs to the missing Chibok girls.

Tragedy struck in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on Sunday night as a member of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, serving in the state, Miss Yetunde Shukurat Idowu, was found on the street, dead.

Vanguard reliably gathered that her last visit before she was found dead was to the popular shopping mall, Shoprite, located along Fate Road.

Consequently, concerned roommate and neighbours constituted themselves into a search party that found Yetunde stone dead on a street at GRA, Ilorin.

Vanguard also gathered that the family of the late youth corps member had been contacted, while her corpse would be released today (Wednesday) on the insistence of the family.

It was also gathered that the deceased, who was an indigene of Ogun State but lived along the popular Fate Road, Ilorin, was of the NYSC 2014 Batch ‘B’ set.

Vanguard investigations, however, revealed that the corps member who went to Shoprite on the fateful day, must have been given a free ride.

Contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, but could not confirm whether or not the late corps member was given a ride, saying they were still investigating.

Asked whether she was given a ride, he said: “All these are guess work. Nobody has volunteered any statement to us. If anybody has any information, maybe they should get to us.

“As far as we are concerned, it was a reported case of ‘found dead’ with a broken skull and bruises. For now, I cannot tell you whether it was a case of rape, abduction or kidnapping.

“We are still investigating. We cannot conclusively say it is a case of abduction or ritual killing because no part of the body was missing.

“It could be a case of a hit-and-run by a careless driver or an outright accident. I cannot confirm that she was raped because all the examinations conducted on her does not show any sign of rape and we are still investigating. But I cannot say exactly what happened.”

He said the corpse would be released today, while investigation was ongoing.
