BREAKING: Neymar loses final appeal, to stand trial for transfer fraud.

Neymar, Barcelona and Santos will stand trial on fraud and corruption charges over the transfer of the Brazilian forward after their appeals were turned down by Spain’s High Court today.

Neymar’s mother Nadine Goncalves and the family company N&N also had appeals rejected.

They cannot appeal against the Court’s decision.

The case stems from a complaint by Brazilian investment group DIS, which owned part of Neymar’s transfer rights and alleges that it received less money than it was entitled to when Neymar joined Barcelona from Santos in 2013.

Investigations were carried out in Spain and Brazil into whether any part of Neymar’s transfer fee had been concealed when he moved to Barcelona from Santos.

Neymar’s clubmates Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano were both convicted of tax fraud last year, while former Barca and current Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez admitted to fraud of almost €1m last month.

All three cases related to income from the players’ image rights.

“I don’t know when Jesus will return” – Man City Boss, Pep Guardiola admits.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty over the injury of Gabriel Jesus even though, Pep Guardiola is confident Gabriel Jesus’ injury will not rob Manchester City of their momentum.

City’s have found greater consistency in recent weeks with new signing Jesus at the heart of their improved form.

But the impressive 19-year-old, who has scored three goals in five appearances, now faces up to three months out after breaking his foot in Monday’s Premier League victory at Bournemouth.

Manager Guardiola said: “We played Tottenham without Gabriel and we played really good against one of the best teams in the Premier League. We did very good things with Gabriel but also without him.

“So I am sad and also I am sad for him. Like (Ilkay) Gundogan, we miss them a lot, it’s tough for them.

“But we had seven strikers, we are going to use another one and of course Sergio (Aguero) will be so important for us.”

Jesus is now in Barcelona having been operated on by renowned surgeon Dr Ramon Cugat.

There is a possibility the youngster could be back in action before the end of the season but Guardiola admits he is unsure.

He said: “He comes back when he is fit, I don’t know, at the end of the season or next season. People say between two and three months.”

Rohr set to poach Everton youngster, Lookman to the Super Eagles.

Everton attacker, Ademola Lookman, has the option to represent Nigeria at international level and the African country has made an approach to seek out his allegiance, according to The Liverpool Echo.

The blistering young forward has moved to the Premier League outfit from Charlton Athletic and has impressed for Ronald Koeman’s men since his January transfer.

Lookman has already represented England at both under-19 and 20 level, with the Wandsworth-born starlet being tipped as a player that could feature in senior international football in the future.

Lookman qualifies for Nigeria through families ties and as such the former Charlton starlet seemingly has a tough decision to make over his national alliance.

The teenager has made five Premier League appearances so far for Everton this term and scored his first Premier League goal in the 4-0 win over Manchester City.

Lookman has played three games for the England national team and scored one goal. Considering that he will be of high probability to make the Three Lions first team in the near future and also because he was born in England and spent his entire life there, he may opt to represent England.

However, Nigeria boss, Gerard Rohr, will visit Lookman in the coming weeks after Lookman’s representatives held talks with the Nigerian FA last month.

“Attention seeking” Bash Alli was never assaulted, says Sports Minister’s aide.

Former World Cruiserweight boxing champion, Bash Alli, has accused Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, of luring him to his office to assault him and treat him like a common criminal. But the office of the minister has denied the allegation, saying Alli is seeking attention.

Alli had in a text message to The Guardian alleged that the minister lured him to his office to conclude plans with officials of the Bank of Industry (BOI) on his pet project, the Guinness Book of World Record boxing bout to be staged in Nigeria.

“After waiting for over three hours, I and six members of the LOC went to remind his personal assistant that we were still waiting when a European identified as an ambassador came and was ushered in,” Alli said.

“Now, I am on admission at the Trauma Ward, National Hospital, Abuja.

All he is pleading is for Nigerians to find out from the minister or his aides what offence he has committed to warrant such treatment.

Reacting to Alli’s allegation yesterday, the Special Assistant on Media to minister, Nneka Ikem Anibeze, described the text message as an unsubstantiated claim with intent to deceive the public.

According to the SA Media: “Ali came to see the Minister and was told to wait at the minister’s waiting room with the 10 people who accompanied him.

She said: “The Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Prof. Gabor Ternak who had an earlier appointment for 2.00 p.m. arrived a few minutes later and was ushered in by the Protocol officer. Bash Ali barricaded the entrance to the office of the minister with the men who accompanied him as he questioned why the ambassador would be allowed to see the minister while he, who came earlier was not given access.

“The uniformed security tried to persuade Alli and his men to leave the minister’s secretary’s office but to no avail. The boxer who was carrying a file and mobile phone carefully went to the secretary’s table to drop his valuables and then fell flat on his back across the doorway.

“Bash Ali was neither touched, shoved nor manhandled by security operatives of the minister. He feigned that he had been beaten up but we challenge him to produce physical evidence of assault, gun butt bumps, and bruises, swelling or otherwise as being presented to the public.

“He has a record of such antics following his despair to defend a world boxing title at over 60.

“In 2013, he alleged that he was beaten up by security operatives of the then Minister of Youth and Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.  In 2015, the WBF cruiser weight boxing champion was detained in Kuje prison following an altercation with the MD of a bank over funds for his title fight.”

Anibeze described Ali as an attention seeker who would stop at nothing to get funds for a purported World Guinness book of records fight.

“His allegation of assault by security personnel of the minister is cheap blackmail and won’t fly. Moreover, his forceful attempt to stop the Hungarian ambassador from gaining entry to the minister’s office is a national embarrassment by a legendary boxer like Bash and he should tender an unreserved apology for his public misbehavior,”Anibeze said.

The incident has already been reported to the police while other security agencies have been duly notified.

Iheanacho, Iwobi, Success key to Nigeria’s dominance of African football, says Rohr

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr, is one of the newbreed German coaches trying their hands in African football. Following in the footsteps of such renowned German coaches including Otto Pfister, Rudi Gutendorf and Burkhard Ziese, Rohr has already started building a reputation as a very bright tactician.

In an interview published by FIFA.Com yesterday, the 63-year-old, who took over the Super Eagles in August last year, revealed his plans to reduce the average age of the players to create a formidable squad that would be unrivalled in the continent.

The German has already started on a bright note with victories over Zambia and Algeria in the Russia 2018 qualifying series. But he says he would not rest on his oars until he gets a team that would surpass the achievements of the Super Eagles of the 1990s.

“Winning our first two matches was a great start, but we will not play again until the end of August and early September, when we face Cameroun,” said Rohr. “They of course are African champions and will be highly motivated to take the form from Gabon into the World Cup qualifiers.

“I do not get carried away. It is a very tough group and nothing has been decided. But I admit that, at the moment, we have a small advantage and if we win our two matches at home against Cameroun and Zambia, we will qualify.”

Although Rohr is banking on the large pool of talented youngsters thrown up by recent age grade competitions to build a formidable Super Eagles, he has also kept faith with the older players to give the team the needed balance.

“As the team and the country had been deeply affected by failing to qualify for the finals in Gabon, I wanted to bring in some younger players into the squad. This, of course, is without closing the door on anyone.”

Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon and Troost-Ekong have already cemented their positions in the new Super Eagles, but the coach is still on the look out for emerging talents to create competition in the squad.

Messi, Ronaldo, To Storm Nigeria

Reigning World Footballer of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, his arch rival and FC Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi, former France captain and coach of Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane, former African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Ayew Pele, among others are set for an international novelty football match in Abuja, between the African football stars and the rest of the World aimed at campaigning against trafficking, insurgency and terrorism.
The match which will be played at the Abuja National Stadium on May 21 is being organized by Next2None Support Initiative with the theme; Africa My Africa.

Addressing the media in Abuja over the weekend, chairman of Next2None Support initiative, Barr. Ndukwe Sam Obu said his organization decided to use football for its campaign because it speaks the language of love, peace, hope and unity.

According to him, other such football icons like Diego Maradona of Argentina, Ruud Gulit, former African and World footballer of the year, George Opone Weah, Thierry Henry, former African footballer of the year, Nwankwo Kanu and former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha amongst others have confirmed their arrival for the match.

Ndukwe further said since most of the victims of human trafficking with those that play football, the event will help them know that they can do other meaningful activities.

Guardiola: It will be difficult to catch up with Chelsea

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has admitted it will be difficult to catch up with Premier League leaders, Chelsea.

The Citizens are now just eight points behind leaders Chelsea after extending their unbeaten run to five games.

Manchester City defeated Bournemouth 2-0 on Monday night to close gap to eight points.

The Catalan told post-match conference, “It’s so difficult because they have to lose three games.

“You have to win all the games and you know how difficult it is to win all the games in the Premier League. We have to do is game by game: now the cup and after we’ll see but we’re so happy.

“Last season before the game against Swansea, we were fifth in position and finished third. Now, before the game, we’re five in position; now we’re second.

“The gap between second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth is nothing; if you lose a game, you’re going to go below. But of course we’re so happy to be second position and reduce the gap a little bit, the distance from Chelsea.

“But still the gap is massive – it’s eight points.”

Copa del Rey final to be played at Vicente Calderon

This year’s Copa del Rey final will be played at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Barcelona defeated Atletico over two legs in the semi-finals to book their place in the final, while Deportivo Alaves saw off Celta Vigo.

Atleti will host the game after Real Madrid refused to allow the Santiago Bernabeu to be used because of construction work.

The game will be played on Saturday, May 27, the weekend after Atletico’s final match at the Calderon against Athletic Club in La Liga.

They will be moving to the 73,000 seater Wanda Metropolitano next season.

Barca are looking to defend the tophy they have won for the last two seasons, defeating Sevilla at the Calderon last year and Athletic at Camp Nou in 2015.

Franck Ribery Set to Miss Arsenal UCL Clash

Bayern Munich will be without in-form winger Franck Ribery and central defender Jerome Boateng for their Champions League clash against Arsenal on Wednesday.

The Bavarians had hoped that the duo would return in time for the first leg of the round of 16 encounter at Allianz Arena.

However, it appears coach Carlo Ancelotti will have to make do without them, with Ribery being restricted to individual training.

The news comes as a blow to the Italian given the veteran winger had been one of Bayern’s form players following the restart of the Bundesliga season after the lengthy winter break.

Ribery notched an assist against Freiburg and then Werder Bremen in consecutive 2-1 wins in January, although the German champions did not fully convince.

The 33-year-old suffered a thigh problem against the latter, however, and had been working – unsuccessfully – to regain fitness against Bayern’s old adversaries Arsenal.

‘Nothing done yet’ regarding Manchester United future – Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says “nothing is done” with regards to his Manchester United future, but claims he has fulfilled the option needed to extend his contract.

The 35-year-old arrived in the summer on a one-year deal with the option of another season, although the make-up of that extension clause is shrouded in mystery.

On Friday, United boss Jose Mourinho said he was convinced Ibrahimovic would still be at Old Trafford when 2017-18 got under way, but the 20-goal striker is giving little away just yet.

Asked if he has triggered the extension clause with goals and appearances, the veteran striker said: “Something like that. I have to score 100 goals!

“The option is already fulfilled. But there’s nothing done yet.”

When asked whether it was case of having to wait and see, Ibrahimovic said: “From my side. We’ll wait and see. Let’s see what happens.”

It would be a huge surprise if Ibrahimovic does not remain at Old Trafford given the way he has excelled this term.

But whenever the Swede does depart, he will do so having left a mark on fans and teammates that belies his brief time at the club.

United sources said at the start of the season that the players were standing taller next to Ibrahimovic and a number of his teammates have spoken about his impact.

Anthony Martial appears to be one of those benefiting from the well-travelled striker’s knowledge and experience.

Having endured a difficult season and found himself watching from the sidelines recently, the 21-year-old marked his return to the starting lineup by setting up one and scoring the other as Watford were beaten 2-0 on Saturday.

“He’s not going around with his head down,” Ibrahimovic said of Martial. “He’s positive, training hard and has a lot of energy. Obviously he wants to play.

“It’s not like we go around to everybody and talk. It’s about the moment, when the situation is there.

“When we eat breakfast he sits beside me and we talk. Everybody talks to everybody.

“It’s not like you go to one and try to cheer him up. It’s a good atmosphere, the guys are very professional. Positive vibes.”

Ozil lacking confidence ahead of Bayern clash – Wenger

Arsene Wenger believes club-record signing Mesut Ozil is lacking confidence as Arsenal prepare to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

The Germany international has been on the periphery of games in recent weeks and his contribution has split opinion among fans.

Ozil, 28, was defended by Wenger ahead of Saturday’s win over Hull after criticism of his performances in the defeats to Watford and Chelsea which have seen Arsenal all but drop out of the Premier League title picture.

It is in games such as Wednesday’s Champions League trip to face Bayern at the Allianz Arena where Ozil is expected to produce the goods.

But having not scored since the win over Stoke on Dec. 10, Wenger feels the former Real Madrid man needs to find the back of the net to rediscover his self-belief.

“It’s time for him to score again,” Wenger said after Alexis Sanchez netted both goals in a 2-0 win over Hull.

“Maybe he will find confidence back as well, because he misses chances. He has chances and he misses the chances that don’t look not feasible for him.

“I felt he did not feel confident [against Hull]. It’s always a problem because you think he can deliver something special but it’s true that technically he missed things that he is not used to.”

Wenger is at a loss as to why the World Cup winner has dropped from his usual high standards in recent weeks but said he had talked to the player, reportedly a summer target for Bayern, about the situation.

“I don’t know — it can happen,” Wenger said, when asked if he knew why Ozil had been underperforming.

“I don’t know any specific reason. I had a chat with him [on Friday].”

Arsenal returned to winning ways with victory over the Tigers and now Wenger is looking forward to the prospect of coming up against Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern.

The teams have met six times in the past four years, with Bayern thrashing the Gunners 5-1 in Germany in their last meeting.

“You have to enjoy football,” Wenger added.

“At the end of the day you have to keep that as well. It’s true that it’s not always easy but it’s important that you feel happy. So what we want is to do well and qualify against Bayern Munich.”

North Korea declares ballistic missile test ‘success’

North Korea said it had successfully tested a new ballistic missile, triggering a US-led call for an urgent UN Security Council meeting after a launch seen as a challenge to US President Donald Trump.

The North’s leader Kim Jong-un “expressed great satisfaction over the possession of another powerful nuclear attack means which adds to the tremendous might of the country,” state news agency KCNA said on Monday.

The missile was launched on Sunday, near the western city of Kusong, and flew east about 500km before falling into the Sea of Japan (East Sea), South Korea’s defence ministry said.

Photos released by KCNA showed the missile blasting into the sky with a smiling Kim watching from the command centre, and standing on the launch field surrounded by dozens of cheering soldiers and scientists.

It said Kim “personally guided” preparations for Sunday’s test, which it described as a surface-to-surface medium long-range Pukguksong-2, a “Korean-style new type strategic weapon system”.

KCNA said the missile was powered by a solid-fuel engine, which requires a far shorter fuelling time than conventional liquid fuel-powered missiles, according to Yun Duk-min of the state-run Institute for Foreign Affairs and Security in Seoul.

“They leave little warning time and, therefore, pose greater threat to opponents,” he said, adding that such missiles are harder to detect before launch by satellite surveillance.

Pyongyang’s latest announcement was the first time a Pukguksong-2 has been mentioned, although last August it test-fired what it said was a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) marked as a Pukguksong-1, a name which translates as “North Star”.

Kim said at the time that the missile, which was launched towards Japan, put the US mainland and the Pacific within striking range.

North Korea claims it has developed an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of hitting the US mainland, but it has not tested one as yet.

The longest-range missile it has tested is the intermediate Musudan, which is theoretically capable of reaching US bases on Guam, but most have ended in failure including one last October, which exploded shortly after launch.

Claudio Ranieri ready to drop Mahrez, Vardy

Leicester City manager, Claudio Ranieri, has admitted that he may have been too loyal to some of his players and says he is ready to drop some of them.

The Premier League champions are firmly in a relegation fight, after losing 2-0 to Swansea at home on Sunday.

It was their fifth consecutive loss and the Foxes have not even scored a goal in the league this year.

The likes of Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater have underperformed this season and Ranieri has hinted at getting ruthless.

“I could be [too loyal], could be,” he said.

“It is difficult when you achieve something so good, you want to give them one chance, two chances, three chances. Maybe now, it is too much.”

He added: “Of course I must change something because it is not possible to continue in this way.”

The 65-year-old however insists he is still the man for the job, in a week where the Leicester owners declared their support for him publicly.

“Yes, I think I am still the right man for the job,” he said.

“I always question myself but I always say ‘come on, we can do something good.’

“I think the strength of the man is to have the right balance. Not to be so high when you win; not to be so down when you lose.

“You can remember what we did last season but you need to stay with your feet on the ground and say we have to react together.

“I don’t think the players have lost belief. When I listen to them speaking, they want to react and do something better. That is important because I am confident when I listen to these words.

“But we have to find a solution soon.”

Rafael Nadal and his coach Part Ways

Rafael Nadal’s uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, has confirmed that he will no longer accompany the tennis star on tour.

He claimed he was being left out of decision-making.

“From next year, I will no longer follow Rafael on the circuit and I will focus exclusively on our (tennis) academy,” he was quoted as saying on the Italian website tennisitaliano.it.

“Relations with my nephew are still excellent. During all these years, we have never been through a crisis.

“Until he was 17 years old, it was me who decided everything. Then Carlos Costa arrived as manager. Then his father became closer, each having his opinions.

“And the truth is that every year I had less decision-making, until the day when I will decide on nothing.”

Carlos Moya joined the Nadal coaching team at the end of last year.

Nadal recently lost in the final of the Australian Open to Roger Federer.

Luis Suarez to Serve Two-Match Ban after Barcelona’s Appeal is Rejected

Luis Suarez will miss the Copa del Rey final on May 27, after Barcelona’s appeal against his sending off  during their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday  was thrown out.

Suarez has also been handed a two-game ban by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), for his actions after being sent off in the final minute of the game. This means he will miss the final and also the first game of Spain’s domestic cup competition next season.

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano wrote in his report, that Suarez was sent off for throwing his arm in Koke’s direction after he received a yellow card for a foul on Juanfran.

He also wrote that Suarez delayed his exit from the pitch, ignoring repeated warnings from the officials and then refused to leave the tunnel area when asked to do so by the fourth official.

The Uruguay striker was the third player sent off against Atletico Madrid, after Sergi Roberto and Yannick Carrasco also saw red.

However, Sergio Busquests’ yellow card for kicking the ball away, has been rescinde

Alexis Sanchez the only Arsenal player good enough for Tottenham XI – Merson

the Chilean has been one of the Gunners’ key men this season, and a former favourite in north London says no one else comes close at the Emirates

Alexis Sanchez is the only player in the Arsenal team who is good enough to get into the Tottenham starting XI, according to former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson.

The 28-year-old Chile international has scored 15 Premier League goals, supplying eight assists, and has been one of the key players at the Emirates this season.

Despite Sanchez’s efforts, Arsenal are currently fourth in the table, three points behind second-placed Spurs, and they find themselves some way off the pace of league leaders Chelsea.

Their hopes of closing the gap to the Blues were dealt a blow at the end of January when they suffered a defeat at home to Watford before succumbing to Antonio Conte’s side at Stamford Bridge last week.

Merson, who won two league titles with the Gunners, has been critical of Wenger’s men in the aftermath of their loss against Chelsea and suggested that Sanchez is, in effect, carrying the team.

“I don’t know where they would be [without Alexis Sanchez],” Merson told Sky Sports.

Mourinho wanted me at Manchester United – Willian

Brazilian midfielder, Willian has revealed that Jose Mourinho tried to bring him to Manchester United last summer, but insists he is happy home at Chelsea.

Mourinho resumed at Old Trafford in July, eight months after he was dismissed by Chelsea for the second time.

His dismissal followed a disastrous Premier League title defence and what technical director Michael Emenalo described as “palpable discord” between players and management.

While Chelsea struggled, Willian was one of few reliable performers in Mourinho’s final season, scoring five goals and registering six assists as well as being voted the club’s Player of the Year.

Reports in England last summer suggested that the pair were set for a move to United.

Willian told Globo Esporte, “Concrete [offers], I have no idea. But Manchester United were interested in me, since Mourinho is there now.

“Other clubs I am not aware, but there is always something on the internet. In any case I am happy that there are clubs who admire my work.”

The forward has continued to perform do well under Antonio Conte despite fighting with Pedro Rodriguez for a place in the starting lineup.

Rohr: Playing in China better than sitting on the Bench in England

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr says the recent move of Captain John Mikel Obi as well as striker Odion Ighalo to different clubs in the Chinese Super League, CSL, is a good development.

The Franco-German noted that the transfer will positively rub off on the senior national team when the qualifiers for the AFCON 2019 and World Cup 2018 commence in June and August respectively.

He made the claim in Sagamu where he watched a Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, match between Remo Stars and Niger Tornadoes yesterday.

Rohr dismissed fears that it could affect the form and performance of the Super Eagles stars.

He claimed that moving to China to play consistently was a far better option than sitting on the bench at Chelsea and Watford respectively.

“The first thing to note is that these guys were not playing at all in their former clubs and now that they have got new clubs it means they will be playing regularly.

“This is good for the Super Eagles and for our aspirations to be at the World Cup. Playing in China is certainly better than sitting on the bench in their former clubs. As professionals I expect them to raise their game as they have been doing even when not playing regularly.

“They play good football in China now. It’s no longer the exotic football they used to play. Now they play ‘real’ football there. They have a real football league with very good players from all over the world and I’m happy that our captain has been able to secure a very good contract.

“Now he gets to play regularly and he’s also the captain of his team. I’m also happy for Ighalo because he will get to play and score plenty of goals.”

Manchester United wouldn’t celebrate top-four finish – Carrick

Manchester United midfield Maestro Michael Carrick insists a top-four finish in the Premier League would be no reason to celebrate.

Despite a 15-match unbeaten league run, Jose Mourinho’s men are sixth in the table, albeit just two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

With Chelsea seemingly running away with the title, as many as six clubs are fighting for the three spots behind Antonio Conte’s team.

But Carrick – a five-time league winner whose future at United is uncertain – said no celebrations would be had if Mourinho’s side secured a top-four spot.

“It’s not something we’d celebrate, if we finished third, fourth or even second,” he told the Mirror.

“You only celebrate when you win, but the Champions League is a big part of this club. It’s where you want to play, it’s where the best players want to play.

“So in terms of attracting players and all that type of stuff, the club is geared up for that, of course it is, but you can only celebrate winning, really, and finishing top.”

Part of their long unbeaten run has seen United held by the likes of Stoke City and Hull City in recent matches.

Carrick said qualifying for the Champions League was the minimum expectation at Old Trafford.

“In terms of the top four, you can’t say it’s unthinkable not to make it because it’s there. You’ve got to achieve it, you’ve got to earn it,” he said.

“We’ve certainly got everything there to give us the best chance of reaching that goal, but the top four has got to be the bare minimum, really.”

United look to continue their top-four push when they host Watford on Saturday.

Wenger Urges Arsenal to Keep Title Belief

Arsenal welcome fast-improving Hull City to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday looking to recover from two deeply damaging results that have all but ruined their Premier League title hopes.

Defeats at home to Watford and away at Chelsea have left Arsene Wenger’s side a mammoth 12 points behind the latter, who lead the way.

But Wenger is refusing to give up on his side’s chances of clawing back that deficit and has urged his players to respond following their twin setbacks.

“It’s never over,” the Arsenal manager said. “We cannot behave like that. Even if you think it is, I don’t. We cannot even think like that.

“We look at the teams around us and we are all in a pack that is very tight, where the fight for every position will be massive like it has always been in the Premier League, maybe even more this season than ever before.”

Wenger goes into the game under heavy pressure, with fan protests at Chelsea including one banner reading “enough is enough”.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and again refused to elaborate on what may happen when his current deal expires.

“My future is not the most important thing,” he told reporters at his weekly press conference on Thursday.

“My future is in front of me every time I make a half-turn. What is important for me is that Arsenal Football Club does well and I dedicate my whole energy to the club doing well.

“Arsenal is made of special strengths and that strength is to be united when things go wrong.

“It’s very nice for you to take care of how I feel, but it’s not the most important. I am a professional and I have to do a job and that’s what I want to do.”

– Hull lose Dawson, Hernandez –

Wenger added: “You cannot be a fan until last Tuesday (when Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Watford) and not be a fan anymore and not be behind the team this Saturday. It doesn’t make sense.

“We are in a fight there. We absolutely have to be united or we have no chance to do it, even if we had two disappointing results.”

Mohamed Elneny is back for Arsenal after returning from Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, but Wenger still has to assess whether Hector Bellerin can play after he was concussed against Chelsea.

“We have a question over Bellerin,” said the Frenchman. “He’s going every day for tests and process. We will only know tomorrow (Friday) if he gets the green light.”

Hull have taken seven points from a possible 12 since Marco Silva’s appointment as manager last month, including a 0-0 draw at Manchester United and a 2-0 win over Liverpool last weekend.

But while they are now just a point from safety, their survival hopes have suffered a blow after injury ruled out key players Michael Dawson (calf) and Abel Hernandez (hamstring) for up to a month.

The loss of the pair is offset by the return of Elneny’s Egypt team-mate Ahmed Elmohamady, while on-loan winger Lazar Markovic is available again after being ineligible against his parent club Liverpool.

Dawson and Hernandez have scored six goals between them in the league this season, with the rest of the squad collectively accounting for only seven following the exits of Robert Snodgrass, Jake Livermore and Oumar Niasse.

Silva is also without Ryan Mason, Curtis Davies, Markus Henriksen and Will Keane, but the 39-year-old remains upbeat.

“We’ve got some players coming into contention so I have a few more difficult decisions to make in terms of team selection and that can only be a good thing,” he said.

“We have done well, but we know there is still a long way to go.”

Wilfried Ndidi’s match-winning performance excites Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri has expressed excitement at Wilfried Ndidi ’s match-winning performance in Leicester City ’s 3-1 victory over Derby County in an FA Cup replay on Wednesday.

Immediately after the restart, Andy King got the curtain raiser for the Foxes before Abdoul Camara’s 61st minute deflected freekick took the tie into extra time.

Ranieri introduced the 20-year-old after the regulation period and it took him just four minutes to settle the tie.

The former Genk midfielder was released through the middle by Riyad Mahrez before making forward strides and unleashing a 25-yard missile that cannoned in off the post. Winger Demarai Gray capped off the encounter with a superb solo effort.

The Italian manager was happy with the choice they made in signing the Nigeria international from Belgium.

”I’m happy with Ndidi. This young player is full of personality and good character. We’ve chosen well,” Ranieri said in a post-match interview.

“For me it (the win) is important for Leicester. When I speak, I speak for Leicester.

“It’s very important this victory and to go through in the cup. It gives us confidence. It was a difficult match.

“When we scored, we played better. Then we scored again and we kept the ball well.”

Ndidi will look to build on this performance when his side, placed a low 16th on the English Premier League log, face fellow strugglers, Swansea City in their next topflight outing on February 12.

Manchester United debt increases by £71.6m

Manchester United’s net debt has increased by £71.6 million in the space of three months to £409.3m, the club’s quarterly financial report has confirmed.

The report, which covers three months up to December 31, 2016, shows that the club’s total overheads rose 27.1 per cent between September 2016 and the end of the calendar year. This comes despite the new Premier League TV deal coming into effect, with the gains being offset by the loss of Champions League revenue.

United have put the loss down in no small part to the significant drop in the value of the pound since the referendum in favour of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, citing the strengthened US dollar as another factor.

However, United do expect to return record revenues once more after topping the Deloitte Football Money League for the first time in over a decade in 2015-16.

In delivering the report, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “We are pleased to be competing for the first available trophy of the season when we travel to Wembley to face Southampton in the EFL Cup final this month.

“The robustness of our business model continues to be reflected in our strong quarterly financial results and we remain on track to deliver record revenues for the year.”

One curiosity in the report is the inclusion of Bastian Schweinsteiger under ‘exceptional items’, with the German midfielder’s return to Jose Mourinho’s plans in recent months being reflected in the accounts as a £4.8m boost to the squad’s value.

Schweinsteiger was excluded from the first team by Mourinho at the start of the season but has since made a comeback and has been added to their list of players eligible to feature in the Europa League. United begin the knockout stage with the first leg of their tie against Saint-Etienne on February 16.

Ballack tells Ozil to quit Arsenal for Bayern Munich

Former Chelsea midfielder, Michael Ballack, has told Mesut Ozil to leave Arsenal for Bayern Munich, if he wants to win major trophies.

Ozil is in talks with the Gunners over a new deal, with the current one running out in June 2018.

Ballack feels he should not extend his stay at the Emirates and should return to Germany.

“Mesut is an amazing player. He knows that he is one of the undisputed stars at Arsenal,” Ballack told Sport Bild.

“A lot of clubs would love to have him.

“But if he wants to win a major title, he has a bigger chance to achieve that at Bayern.”

Ballack also admitted that Arsenal will not allow Ozil leave except a big transfer fee is paid.

“If you look at the recent developments in England and China, it seems inevitable that Bayern will soon pay transfer fees of €50million or so as well,” he added.

“They have to if you want to keep competing with the best.

“If you want to bring in a world-class player, you will have to invest.”

‘I’ll like to be president of Real Madrid – Rafael Nadal

Nadal, 14-time  Tennis grand slam champion has revealed he’ll like to become president of Real Madrid even though he thinks it’ll never happen.

Nadal, a native of Spain has been a vocal Madrid supporter for a very long time and watches Real Madrid’s games, but the 30-year-old greatest clay court player of all time, knows being at the helm of the 11 time European champions will be nice for him and also praised the work being done by current Madrid president Florentino Perez.

“If you ask me if I would like it, of course I would, why not?”  Nadal said, via El Mundo. “But there is more to it… I think it will not be.”

“We are very good as we are,” he said. “We have a great president right now and I don’t think Real Madrid need me, but we never know what can happen in the future. “It is not something I can raise today.”

South Africa introduces $260 monthly minimum wage

South Africa will introduce a national minimum wage of 3,500 rand (261 dollars) per month in 2018, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday, following protracted negotiations between the government and labour unions.

Supporters of a minimum wage say it can stimulate growth as workers can spend more, as well as reducing inequality.

Critics say it could lead to increased unemployment as employers will be unable to afford higher wage bills.

Credit ratings agencies have said agreeing a minimum wage would help Africa’s most industrialised economy hold onto its investment-grade rating by stabilising the labour market and reducing the number of strikes.

“The balance we have sought to strike is that it must not be too low, so that it doesn’t affect the lowest paid workers, but not too high that it leads to massive job losses,” Ramaphosa told a news conference.

Ramaphosa said the national minimum wage, which equates to 20 rand (1.50 dollars) per hour, would come into effect in May 2018.

Businesses that are unable to afford the minimum wage would be permitted to apply for an exemption of up to 12 months, Ramaphosa said. The Treasury had also thrown its political weight behind the policy initiative.

Chief economist at Nedbank Dennis Dykes said the agreement was a sign of an improving relationship between labour, business and government, but warned that its implementation needed to be monitored.

“It is by no means certain this will lead to job creation. “It needs to be watched carefully for any negative effects,” Dykes said.

Monthly earnings for employees averaged 18,045 rand (1,200 dollars) per month in May 2016, according to Statistics. Mmany workers earn far less than that, with domestic workers and farm labourers among the lowest paid.

Some unions had asked for a minimum wage of as much as 4,500 rand.

South Africa’s mining sector was brought to its knees by a crippling five-month stoppage over pay in 2014,pushing the economy to the brink of a recession.

South Africa’s unemployment rate hit its highest level on record, 27.1 per cent of the workforce, in the third quarter of 2016, and it remains amongst the world’s most unequal societies.

Super Eagles focused on South Africa, not Cameroon – Rohr

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has insisted that they are thinking about the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and not the 2018 World Cup qualifying double header against Cameroon.

Rohr says that the game against Bafana Bafana is more pressing, as Nigeria will not play the newly-crowned African champions until August.

“I understand that Nigerians are concerned about our progress to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but don’t forget that we have not qualified for the AFCON since 2013 and the crucial game against South Africa is in June, so I want to focus on that,” Rohr told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“We have six months between now and August when we play Cameroun. Between now and then we are going to play two friendly games, as well as the qualifier against South Africa. If we do well in those games, it will help our confidence against Cameroun,” Rohr said.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group E of the AFCON qualifiers with South Africa, Seychelles and Libya.

They are top of their Group B of the World Cup qualifying Africa section with six points ahead of Cameroun with two points. Zambia and Algeria have one point each.

Pinnick behind my FIFA ban – Giwa

Factional President of the Nigeria Football Federation Chris Giwa has protested against the five-year worldwide ban placed on him by FIFA on Tuesday due to the leadership tussle in the NFF.

The world football body extended the national ban imposed by the NFF Disciplinary Committee on Giwa on May 12, 2016 to have “worldwide effect” on him. The Amaju Pinnick-led NFF board banned Giwa and four others for five years for impersonation and taking football matters to a civil court.

The four other officials are Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson Effiong.

A statement on FIFA’s website read, “FIFA can today (Tuesday) confirm the worldwide extension of sanctions imposed by the Nigerian Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee on 12 May 2016 against the officials Christopher Giwa, Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson Effiong for breaches of the NFF Statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics.

“In accordance with art. 136ff of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the Chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the five-year ban from taking part in any kind of football-related activity imposed on the five officials to have worldwide effect. The relevant member association as well as CAF has been duly notified of the chairman’s decision.”

But a statement signed by Habila Ardzard, lawyer for Giwa’s NFF board, said the ban extension by FIFA was orchestrated by the Pinnick-led NFF board.

“The purported ban resulted from the legal actions the Chris Giwa-led NFF board instituted in the court of law to sustain its mandate given to it on August 26, 2014. We find the said correspondence a disingenuous ploy by the Amaju Pinnick-led pretentious board of the NFF to divert attention from the credibility and integrity baggage it is currently in,” the statement read.

“For the avoidance of doubt Article 1(1) of the NFF Statutes guarantees that the NFF is set up under Nigeria’s law and is bound by same.  The issue of whether or not football matters can be resolved in ordinary court of law has been resolved by the Court of Appeal in Nnaji vs Nigeria Football Association (2011), where it was held that FIFA and CAF statutes, which have not been domesticated into Nigeria’s Municipal Law, have no binding effects on citizens of this country.”

Despite the non-recognition of the August 2014 poll by FIFA, Giwa has insisted he was duly elected NFF president. Pinnick was elected a month later in an election that has been backed by the world football body afterwards.

Giwa said he had yet to get notification of his ban.

“They (FIFA) have not communicated to us directly and reading something on FIFA’s website is not a direct communication,” Giwa told BBC Sport.

“Once we hear from FIFA  then we will take the necessary steps and we cannot rule out (filing an appeal with Court of Arbitration for Sport) over something so excessive.”

Maria Sharapova returns, to play Madrid Open

Former world tennis women’s number one Maria Sharapova has been invited to play at the Madrid Open in May, tournament organisers said on Wednesday.

The event takes place less than two weeks after her 15-month doping ban expires.

The five-time Grand Slam winner has been given a wildcard for the event, which begins on May 5.

It is scheduled to be her second comeback tournament after her suspension for doping, with the Russian set to return to action at the Stuttgart Grand Prix in April.

“Sharapova requested an invitation to play… (She) is one of the best players of the last 15 years and also a past winner of our tournament,” said event director Manolo Santana.

“In Madrid she always plays well and I’m sure she will come back to the courts highly motivated and hoping to do well.’’

Following a positive test for the drug meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open, the Russian was suspended for two years by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) cut the ban by nine months last October, allowing her to return from April 26.

NAN recalls that her case divided opinion in the sport.

The Florida-based Sharapova, who turns 30 on April 19, had called the ITF’s original ruling “unfairly harsh’’ because she had not intentionally violated anti-doping rules.

Meldonium was only added to the World Anti-Doping Agency list of banned substances at the start of 2016 after mounting evidence it boosted blood flow and enhanced performance.

CAS cut Sharapova’s suspension but said she “bore some degree of fault’’ by relying on agent Max Eisenbud to check the banned list for changes.

I will never feel great again – Tiger Woods

Former world golf number one Tiger Woods has accepted that he will “never feel great’’ again after suffering a number of back and knee injuries in recent years.

The 14-times major champion returned to action in December following a 15-month layoff but was forced to pull out of the Dubai Desert Classic last week.

After playing in the first round of the event, he withdrew due to a back spasm.

“There were a lot of times I didn’t think I was going to make it back. It was tough, it was more than brutal,” Woods said.

The 41-year-old American has racked up 79 PGA Tour victories in his career but has not won a major championship since 2008.

“There have been plenty of times when I thought I would never play the game again at the elite level,’’ Woods, ranked 674th in the world, said.

“It was tough, it was more than brutal. There were times I needed help just to get out of bed.

“I feel good, not great. I don’t think I will ever feel great because it’s three back surgeries, four knee operations,” he added.

Woods is hoping to play in the U.S. Masters in April, the first major of the year.(Reuters/NAN)

Manchester United should be winning more games under Mourinho – Yorke

Manchester United Treble winner Dwight Yorke says that while the Red Devils have improved under Jose Mourinho this season, they have paid the price for their failure to convert draws into victories.

United have gone 15 games unbeaten in the Premier League yet three of their last four matches have ended in draws and they have been stuck in sixth position in the table for the past 65 days, despite a big summer spending spree.

“This team under Jose have improved, they have brought in exceptional players like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] and [Paul] Pogba to add quality and some personality,” Yorke told ESPN.

“But they haven’t been able to convert enough wins. This was different under my time [at United]. When we played under Sir Alex Ferguson, even though we weren’t dominating games at times, the resilience and belief kept coming back.”

In cup competitions, Mourinho’s men have reached the EFL Cup final against Southampton on Feb. 26, while they also remain in the FA Cup and Europa League.

But with United having drawn three of their last four Premier League matches, including a 0-0 stalemate at home to Hull on Feb. 2, they are now 14 points behind leaders Chelsea and two points outside of the top four.

“The United of now should be able to win games against Hull,” Yorke said. “Despite dominating games, they haven’t found a way to win them.”

Yorke won the Premier League three times during his four seasons at Old Trafford, scoring 65 goals in 147 games in all competitions. The former Trinidad and Tobago captain was also part of the side that won the Treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in the 1998-99 season.

In the same campaign, he was the Premier League’s joint-top scorer after netting 18 league goals in 32 matches.

Yorke, who captained Sydney FC to the inaugural A-League title in 2006, retired from professional football at the age of 37 in 2009. He earned 89 caps for Trinidad and Tobago between 1989 and 2009.

Wenger Should Remain in Charge of Arsenal – Henry

Thierry Henry has told disgruntled Arsenal fans that Arsene Wenger should not leave the club, but says the Gunners boss has a difficult task to turn the team into Premier League champions.

It has been 13 years since Wenger guided the North London club to the last of the three English top-flight titles he has won since taking over in 1996.

With just a trio of FA Cup wins since, some supporters at the Emirates Stadium have become restless, but Henry believes the man who brought him to Arsenal in 1999 should keep his current job, even if there is much work to be done.

“Personally, I think Arsene shouldn’t leave,” Henry, who was handed his professional debut by Wenger while at Monaco aged 17, told RMC. “Should he change tactics or his way of doing things? I don’t know if he’s ready to do that. But the work he has to do right now is difficult, because it’s work on the mental side of things.

“Tactics help, but what I saw [in Saturday’s 3-1 loss] against Chelsea, it’s a mental problem. It’s what I’ve seen for a little while now. That’s where Arsene’s work is really difficult, because it’s a mental problem. It’s not easy to handle.

“Arsenal haven’t won the title for 12 years, and you get the impression they maybe won’t win it this season. I think there’s quality in the team. Is there enough to win the title? At the start of the season, when you look at Chelsea and Arsenal on paper, there’s not an enormous difference. So, that means it’s possible.

“If Chelsea are ahead, Arsenal can also do it. But to do that, you have to be at it every day. You have to be good in training all the time. You have to get stuck into yourself from time to time. I think the Arsenal players aren’t aware of what they could achieve. There comes a time when you have to believe in your chances of winning. It takes looking after yourselves, auto-discipline within the squad.”

Henry, who became Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer before leaving for Barcelona in 2007, had been working with the club’s youth players as he progresses towards his ambition of becoming a coach following the end of his playing career in December 2014.

However, Wenger said he could not devote himself to both a full-time position with Arsenal’s under-18 team and his work as a pundit for Sky Sports. The 39-year-old Henry has since taken up a role as an assistant coach to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.

“The youth academy director gave me the under-18 coaching role,” Henry said. “Arsene thought it wasn’t compatible with my role as a pundit. It stopped there. I have enormous respect for Arsene. I left, I’m not disappointed. I don’t have priority.

“I have to prove that I’m good to coach. I’m not there yet. I don’t even have my third [UEFA pro] licence. Don’t ask me to look forward. I’m starting. I’m trying to become a coach.

“I don’t think I can know whether I’ll go somewhere one day. I am living a dream, I work in the world of football. I will go where I’m wanted. People think I dream of Arsenal. Yes, but it’s just a dream. How could I be pretentious enough [to consider that]?”

Ghana FA Ends Avram Grant’s Reign As Coach of Black Stars

Ghana Football Association will not extend the current contract of Avram Grant as Black Stars coach when it expires at the end of February 2017.

Both the GFA and Grant have reached an agreement to part ways when their current contract expires on February 28 2017, according to a statement published on the Ghana FA’s website on Tuesday.

The former Chelsea manager assumed the Black Stars job on December 1, 2015, and led the team to finish second at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. But the Black Stars’ fortunes plummeted since that AFCON silver medal feat.

Grant’s Black Stars finished fourth at the recently concluded 2017 AFCON in Gabon,  a feat widely dismissed by Ghanaians as an underachievement.

“It’s time for Wenger to leave Arsenal” – William Gallas

Former Arsenal captain, William Gallas, has said the time could be right for Arsene Wenger to step down as manager of the club.

Wenger’s current deal runs out at the end of this season and there has been speculation that he could leave after 21 years in charge.

“Maybe it is time to change something at the end of the season,” Gallas told talkSPORT.

“We can’t forget what he did for the club. He did a very, very good job so sometimes you can’t sack the manager like this. You have to respect the manager.

“That is why I said at the end of the season maybe the board has to speak with Arsene and try to find a solution.”

Gallas also stated that Wenger is being criticized a lot, because of the lack of trophies in recent seasons.

“You get criticism when you don’t win trophies, when you don’t win games, and that is maybe the difference between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger,” he continued.

“Mourinho wants to win every game and at the end of the season sometimes he has success but, for Arsene, Arsenal didn’t win from 2004 so everybody starts to criticise him because football has changed.

“Football is about victory, about trophies. Players want to lift trophies. If you don’t lift a trophy in your career, you will feel disappointed at the end of your career.

“I don’t know what Arsenal are going to do but they have to win trophies again.”

Cameroon can never beat Nigeria in 2018 World Cup qualifiers – Onazi

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, has said that Cameroon will not beat Nigeria in their 2018 World Cup double header later this year.

The Eagles are top of their qualifying group with six points and will host the newly-crowned African champions in August.

The return leg will be played four days later.

“I believe Cameroon can never beat us,” Onazi said.

“Not just Cameroon, but any other team.

“We will face them just as we approached our first two World Cup qualifiers. We are looking forward to the games.

“We wish to congratulate Cameroon for their AFCON success, they have done very well.

“But that notwithstanding we are also working on our own. All our players are doing well all over Europe and as a team we are doing very well.

“We wait for them and we will see what will see what’s going to happen as I believe so much in our team.”

Nigeria and Cameroon last clashed in a 2015 friendly in Belgium, with the Super Eagles running away 3-0 winners.

FIFA Hammers Chris Giwa, 4 Other With Five-Year Worldwide Ban

World football governing body FIFA has banned five Nigerian football administrators; Christopher Giwa, Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson Effiong for five years for breaching the Nigerian Football Federation’s Statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics.

The ban  have worldwide effect, FIFA said.

The five persons who were banned by the NFF Disciplinary Committee last year from taking part in any kind of football-related activity, for staging a factional NFF board, saw their sanction extended in accordance with Article 136ff of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

Christopher Giwa’s trouble started after he laid claims to being the legally elected NFF President and filed a lawsuit aiming to depose the sitting president, Amaju Pinnick, who emerged from the September 30 2015 elections in Warri.

Giwa was guilty of breaching the rules of conduct as stipulated in Article 13 of the FIFA Code of Ethics after he invaded the premises of the Nigeria Football Federation and falsely presented himself as President of the NFF on 6th May, 2016.

According to the media release on the official website of FIFA, relevant member associations of the world football ruling body, as well as CAF, have been duly notified of the decision .

South Africa Rugby legend passes away after long battle with motor neurone disease

South African Rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen, widely regarded as one of rugby union’s best-ever scrum-halves, has passed away today at the age of 45 after his long fought battle with a motor neurone disease.

Joost was rushed to the hospital on Saturday in very critical condition and despite efforts by the medical team to stabilize him, he died today.

He played over 80 games for his country between 1999- 2003.

Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, in tribute to Van der Westhuizen said;
‘Joost will be remembered as one of the greatest Springboks – not only of his generation, but of all time,’

‘He also became an inspiration and hero to many fellow sufferers of this terrible disease as well as to those unaffected. We all marvelled at his bravery, his fortitude and his uncomplaining acceptance of this terrible burden.

‘He could do things no one else could and it was his unpredictability as a scrum-half that dazzled opponents and gave his supporters so much reason to cheer,’

‘Joost epitomised what it meant to represent South Africa on the rugby field and always showed a remarkable fighting spirit throughout his career, but also in recent years during his illness

AFP: How prison term transformed Watford captain Troy Deeney’s life for the better

Watford striker Troy Deeney’s “light bulb” moment came when the cell door slammed and he contemplated a 10-month jail term for affray five years ago, he told AFP.

The 28-year-old, locked up for assaulting a student outside a pub, entered prison with words from his mother ringing in his ears — that it was at times like that she wished he had not been born.

But Deeney rebuilt his life and his career and two years after he was released having served three months, he was appointed Watford captain, a role he retains to this day.

“It was survival mode after that. People will go ‘right yeah survival mode’ and say that’s a bit drastic but it was that.

“All my feelings and emotions cut off as I said to myself ‘you’ve got to get through this next few months’.

“I didn’t have enough time to sulk or cry and do all the things you would think are natural reactions.

“If my mum died now I’d be a mess. I’d be crying all over the place and drinking loads of beer like everyone else would. I didn’t have that luxury.”

Deeney said incarceration transformed him for the better.

“I always knew I would come out better but it was about how I went about doing it,” said Deeney.

“Part of the course was alcohol dependency which was compulsory if I was to be eligible for a tag (to wear on early release).

“I got into speaking, I used to be closed and have a lot of anger in me, at the group sessions.

“I still speak to a psychologist. People feel sorry for themselves and think the world owes them something and then you realise it’s not that bad.”

Deeney, now teetotal, was particularly close to the man he called his father, Paul Anthony Burke — his biological father left home early on. He has a tattoo which bears Burke’s date of birth and death.

It was to Burke that Deeney’s thoughts turned when Watford gained automatic promotion to the Premier League in the 2014/15 season.

“I just cried,” admits Deeney. “I remember I found out on the bus that we got promoted as other results went our way — everyone went crazy.”

He added: “I always wanted to be a footballer and always liked the idea of playing in the Premier League. I had played in League One (the third tier) with Walsall, then the Championship.

“My dad and granddad would be so proud. I rang my wife (Stacey and mother of their two children, Myles and Amelia) and said I’m going there to his graveside.

“However, at 6 in the evening it was shut so I went out with the team.

“Then the next morning I went with a thermos of tea to the cemetery and had a cup of tea and sat there talking to his gravestone.”

Deeney, who has set up his own foundation to help seriously ill children and distributes football kit to youngsters on the tough estate where he once lived in Birmingham, says he has used his prison experience to advise young offenders.

“I would probably stay away from talking in prisons because I had a career going in and I had one going out,” said Deeney, who invited two of the prison guards to the Championship play-off final in 2014 as a way of thanking them for encouraging him to go to the prison gym and keep fit.

“I can’t resonate with a lot of people there as there are a lot who have lived on that same road (crime) and once they are out they go back to doing the same thing.

“Driving out there in a Range Rover probably doesn’t sit well with them,” added Deeney, who nevertheless stays in touch with two of the inmates he considers friends.

Deeney spoke to AFP after speaking at Sport Industry NextGen in partnership with Barclays.

Sergio Aguero hints at Manchester City exit

Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero, has dropped a big hint, that he could leave the club at the end of the season.

The Argentina international was left on the bench for the second consecutive Premier League fixture on Sunday, as they defeated Swansea City 2-1 at the Etihad.

Aguero has lost his place to new signing Gabriel Jesus and although manager Pep Guardiola insists he is still part of his plans, the player will consider his future in May.

“Yeah, fine, normal,” he said of his current situation when asked by Goal.

“Sometimes this happens. When you’re on the bench you have to wait for your opportunity. I have three months to do my best and try to help the team and we’ll see what happens with my future.”

Asked about whether he has thought about changing clubs, Aguero replied: “No, no. I have to help the team as much as I can in these three months, afterwards we’ll see what the club wants to do with me.”

Aguero signed a contract extension last January and has three years left on it.

“In three years my contract is up, that’s why I say I’m happy at the club. In these last three months that are left I have to help the club and as I say the club will decide if I have a place here or not,” he added.

Real Madrid has been linked with a summer move for the player recently.

I was lucky not to be shown red card against Leicester City – Mata

Manchester United midfielder, Juan Mata, has admitted he was “a bit lucky” not to be sent off for a challenge on Jamie Vardy, during their 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday.

Mata caught Vardy with a late lunge in the first half, but was only shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor.

The Spain international went on to score United’s third goal, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also getting on the scoresheet.

“I was late, I tried to reach the ball, I didn’t want to hurt Jamie,” Mata explained to Sky Sports.

“Probably I was a bit lucky but I just wanted to get the ball because I lost it 10 seconds before.”

He continued: “I think the performance was quite good. Even before scoring the first goal I think we were trying to control the game through passes and trying to have the ball.

“Mkhi’s was an incredible goal and after that we played very good and could have scored twice more. We’re very happy because today we took our chances.

“It was very important for Mkhi and me to score because Zlatan is scoring a lot but we need goals from us as well.”

Forbes names Ronaldo highest-paid sportsman of 2016 ahead of Messi, LeBron James

Forbes has named Real Madrid superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s highest-paid sportsman of 2016 for the first time ever.

The 32-year-old also becomes only the second person from a team sport to make it to the top of the list.

Ronaldo reportedly earned $88million last year, ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi ($81million) and NBA star LeBron James ($77million).

Kurt Badenhausen of Forbes, explains that the Portugal captain has overtaken boxer Floyd Mayweather and golfer Tiger Woods.

“With Mayweather hanging up his gloves and Woods hampered by injuries, there is an opening at the top. Filling the gap is the biggest star in the biggest sport on the planet,” Badenhausen wrote.

“This year, soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo is the world’s highest-paid athlete, with earnings of $88m over the past 12 months from salary, bonuses and endorsements. Ronaldo is only the second team athlete after Michael Jordan to rank as the top-paid since Forbes began tracking athlete earnings in 1990.”

Other footballers who made the top 50 include: Barcelona star Neymar in 21st place ($37.5m), Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic at 23 ($37.4m), Madrid’s Gareth Bale at 25 ($35.9m) and Wayne Rooney of United at 49 ($26.1m).

Ronaldinho returns to Barcelona as ambassador

Ronaldinho has returned to Barcelona as a club ambassador, the La Liga outfit have confirmed.

The Brazil legend spent five seasons at the Camp Nou during his playing career.

Between 2003 and 2008, he made 207 appearances for Barca and scored 94 goals, winning the 2005/2006 Champions League and back-to-back Liga titles.

Ronaldinho eventually retired from football last year.

“FC Barcelona and Ronaldinho have reached an agreement whereby the Brazilian will become a Club ambassador and representative at various events and activities over the coming years,” a club statement read.

“Ronaldinho will also form part of the Legends project, a team of former players who, through matches around the world, will help to globalise the Barça brand and its values, and will take part in clinics, training sessions and institutional events, among other activities organised by the Club.

“Through FCBEscola, FC Barcelona and Ronaldinho’s football academies will be seeking different ways to collaborate both in terms of the brand and possible associations with the same. The player will also appear in the opening and closing ceremonies at some schools and take part in activities in which he will share his experience in educational talks.

“Ronaldinho will also take part in FC Barcelona Foundation events related to UNICEF. The Masia 360 project will be another one of the Club projects where the Brazilian will be present, helping with the training and coaching of the athletes involved.

“The agreement will be signed on Friday at 5.30pm CET at the Camp Nou directors’ box with the presence of Ronaldinho and president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Then, the media will be to take photos of the Brazilian star at the club museum.”

Cameroon beat Ghana to reach Cup of Nations final

Michael Ngadeu and Christian Bassogog both netted in the second half as Cameroon beat Ghana 2-0 in Franceville on Thursday to reach the Africa Cup of Nations final.

A finely-poised tie remained goalless until the 72nd minute, when Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah failed to deal with a free-kick into his area and John Boye’s weak defensive header merely served as an assist for Ngadeu to control and fire home.

Bassogog then broke away to clinch the win and spark wild celebrations as Hugo Broos’s side progress to a final against Egypt in Libreville on Sunday.

Ghana, who have still never beaten Cameroon at the competition, will now go to Port-Gentil for a third-place play-off against Burkina Faso on Saturday.

This was their sixth consecutive Cup of Nations semi-final, but their wait to win the trophy for the first time since 1982 will go on.

Just as in their quarter-final win against DR Congo, Ghana were once again without Asamoah Gyan at kick-off as their captain struggled to shake off a groin injury.

In his absence, the Black Stars were second best for most of the first half and Cameroon were unfortunate not to be in front after a lively start to the match.

Adolphe Teikeu saw his header from a Benjamin Moukandjo corner cleared off the line by Harrison Afful and Razak had to get down to save when Robert Ndip Tambe swept a Moukandjo cross towards goal.

Moukandjo, the France-based captain of this inexperienced Cameroon side, also headed onto the roof of the net as the Ghanaians weathered the storm.

With Andre Ayew struggling to get into the game from his position on the left flank, Avram Grant’s side made little impression going forward until five minutes before half-time.

That was when Christian Atsu’s pass into the box split the Cameroonian defence and found Jordan Ayew, whose shot from a tight angle whistled just wide of Fabrice Ondoa’s far post.

In a reversal of roles, Ghana were the better team at the start of the second half with the lightning quick winger Atsu their main source of danger.

When one of his runs was illegally halted outside the area, Mubarak Wakaso whipped in the resulting free-kick and Ondoa flew high to his right to turn the ball behind.

The Indomitable Lions steadied themselves and got the breakthrough from a set-piece of their own, the goal Cameroon’s first in almost five hours since Ngadeu netted the winner against Guinea-Bissau in the group stage.

Ghana then sent on Gyan for the closing stages but as they pushed men forward Bassogog broke downfield and beat Razak to make it 2-0 in the third minute of added time.

Iwobi’s Arsenal Success Will Motivate Me At Brighton – Akpom

Nigerian forward, Chuba Akpom, says Alex Iwobi’s success at Arsenal will motivate him to do well at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Akpom joined Brighton on loan before the close of the January transfer window – his fifth loan move since his promotion from the Arsenal youth team.

Speaking on his loan move, Akpom states that he wants to prove that he has what it takes to achieve at Brighton.

“Just seeing Alex doing good is a really proud moment for me because we grew up together and he’s like a brother to me,” Akpom tells Brighton’s website.

“To see him doing well and pushing on is good and I use it as a motivation. I’ve come here and I want to play games for the first team and show everyone what I can do.”

Akpom was in the Hull City squad that got promoted to the Premier League last season. And now he wants to help Championship leaders Brighton to get promotion also.

“Everyone gave me advice and every game we were just looking to win and push for promotion. Everyone was eager to get back into the Premier League and I’m sure it will be the same here, everyone will come in for training every day with the same winning mentality and I’m looking forward to it.”

Ivanovic’s contract at Stamford Bridge was set to expire at the end of the season, and he has opted for a new challenge at Zenit, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Klopp: I could never be friends with Diego Costa

The Liverpool boss was not impressed with the Chelsea’s striker’s antics during Tuesday’s clash, but still revealed his admiration for his qualities

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he could never be friends with Diego Costa if he had to face him on the pitch, but acknowledged his “warrior” attitude has been crucial to Chelsea’s success.

Costa has not been far from the headlines and found himself the talking point again in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with the Reds at Anfield, with some feeling the Spain striker went to ground too easily under a challenge from Joel Matip in the penalty area.

The former Atletico Madrid star assumed responsibility for the penalty, but saw his effort denied by Simon Mignolet 14 minutes from time.

Referee Mark Clattenberg’s decision to award the spot-kick was one of the main talking points, but while Klopp admits he would not enjoy a friendly relationship with Costa, he refused to condemn the striker without seeing the incident again.

“If I had played against Costa I could never be friends [with him], that is how it is,” Klopp told reporters following the draw with the Premier League leaders.

“But when you have him in your team it is much more fun. He is a warrior. What [Antonio] Conte is doing with Chelsea is outstanding, but Chelsea without Costa this season [who knows where they would be?].

“He is not the nicest guy on the pitch but I saw no real big incident and until someone tells me something…

“If someone tells me it was a dive maybe I will be angry Wednesday but that would be wrong decision what, number 27? But it does not make it better.”

Dalung’s wife to be buried on February 4

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has confirmed that his late wife will be buried on Feb. 4 at Sabongida, Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau.

Dalung confirmed this in a statement signed in Abuja on Wednesday by Tolu Makinde, the Director of Information in the Ministry.

According to the statement, Dalung is still pained by the demise of his wife.

It said the minister had expressed gratitude to Nigerians from all works of life for the outpouring of love, sympathy and condolences over the tragic loss of his wife.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari who personally called him last night to condole with him and his family at this period of grief.

Mrs Briskila Dalung passed on in Jos on Jan. 29 after a protracted illness.

We are going to show Arsenal we have changed since the 3-0 defeat – Conte

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has urged his side to complete the job in “a big week for the club”, as they prepare to face Arsenal this weekend.

Conte’s men lost 3-0 in the reverse fixture at the Emirates last September, as the Gunners blew them away in a first-half blitz.

“We have to concentrate and prepare for Arsenal, because we face another great team – that’s what they are. They can fight for the title,” he said after their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday

“This week is very important for us and we want to finish in the right way.

“This was a good result for sure, but we wasted a lot of energy in a difficult atmosphere, and don’t forget in the previous game we lost 3-0 away to Arsenal. This could be a good chance for us to show now in second half of season we are a totally different team if you compare the previous game.”

Conte also added that his squad is now secure until the end of the season, even though the Chinese transfer window is still open until February 28.

He added: “Is it still open in China? For us, the market is finished. Not buy, not sell, and I am very happy with that – our market is finished.”

I Miss The Champions League – Mourinho

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has urged his players to step up their quest to qualify for the Champions League next year, as he misses the competition.

Mourinho has had to play in the Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils in the last 32 of the competition, where they will take on St Etienne this month.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is among a small group of coaches — including Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Carlo Ancelotti — who have taken charge of 100 Champions League games. And he is desperate to return to the big stage.

“Personally, I miss the Champions League,” Mourinho said.

“Every match I don’t play in the Champions League means an incredible number of matches is not going up. I am the youngest one to be in the club of 100. Every time I don’t play I am not happy.

“But obviously Manchester United is much more important than me. What matters is Manchester United, and as everyone knows, it’s a club that belongs to the Champions League.

“We shall do everything possible to make sure we are in it next season.

“We have two chances to be there: one is by winning the Europa League, the other is by finishing in the top four. Both achievable, both difficult, but we are going to work hard for that.”

Enyimba’s Ezekiel Bassey Signs Two-Year Deal with Barcelona

Enyimba International striker, Ezekiel Bassey, has joined FC Barcelona until the end of the season.

The La Liga club announced the deal on their official website on Tuesday and revealed that the 20-year-old will be undergoing his medicals.

It is understood that Bassey could be handed a two-year contract at the end of the season, because of his impressive performances for the Barcelona B team.

“FC Barcelona and Enyimba Football Club have reached an agreement for the transfer until the end of season of the player Ezekiel Joseph Bassey for Barça B,” The club said on their official website.

“The agreement includes a purchase option for two more seasons. The 20-year-old Nigerian striker will undergo medical examination in the next few hours.”

Bassey was included in the Nigeria Professional Football League All-Star team, that travelled for the Spain tour, as part of the partnership between the League Mangement Company (LMC) and the Spanish La Liga.

La Liga to Introduce Video Referees in 2018

The Spanish league is expected to introduce the use of video referees in 2018, according to their president, Javier Tebas.

This follows widespread criticism after Barcelona were wrongly denied a goal in their 1-1 draw with Real Betis on Sunday.

Betis had taken the lead in the second half through Alex Alegria. Barca thought they had drawn level, when Aissa Mandi attempted to clear a Jordi Alba shot off the line.

The goal was ruled out by referee Hernandez Hernandez, but replays showed the ball had completely crossed the line.

La Liga initially said they would not comment on the wrong call, but Tebas later told local media that video refereeing will be implemented, as soon as FIFA sends approval.

“We have always defended the use of technology in soccer and in this case we believe that video referees is the most advanced option,” Tebas said.

“The tests are already underway. I believe that beginning in July 2018, if FIFA approves it, we will start using it.”

Tebas explained that they were choosing video referees over goal-line technology which is being used in other European leagues, because systems such as Hawkeye were too expensive.

“This year there were three other similar cases and nobody said much about it,” he said.

“Maybe people are making such a big deal this time because the ball went in by a big margin.”

“I can’t continue to warm the bench in Watford”, says China-bound Ighalo.

Odion Ighalo, Super Eagles and Watford FC striker, says he got tired of sitting on the bench, hence, his decision to join the Chinese league.

Chinese club, Changchun Yatai, and Watford have reportedly agreed on £20 million for Ighalo.

Walter Mazzari, manager of Watford, had confirmed that the club was considering a “very important” offer for Ighalo.

The striker told TheCable that he would have loved to remain at Watford, but the yearn for playing time enforced his decision to move on.

“I can not continue to sit on the bench anymore here. Yes, I wish to remain at Watford but no team in England can pay the 20 million pounds Watford are asking for. So I just need to leave,” Ighalo told TheCable.

Interestingly, Chinese clubs have been on the trail of Odion Ighalo for some years.

In July 2015, Watford received and rejected a £10m offer for Ighalo from Chinese first division side, Hebei China Fortune.

A year later, Watford again rejected a £37.5m bid from Shanghai SIPG for the striker.

The club’s Swedish coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, had planned to partner Ighalo with Brazilian striker Hulk but the deal failed to materialise.

The latest bid for the striker, it appears, was accepted and from all indications, Ighalo will be on his way to China to join Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi.

“Hopefully, everything will be sorted with Changchun Yatai today,” Ighalo said.

Ighalo scored a total 36 goals in 99 games for Watford since joining the team on loan from Granada in 2014.

I Am An Icon, I Don’t Care What Other People Think – Mourinho

The Red Devils boss acknowledges that he is a recognisable figure around the world and feels any criticism he gets is often driven by ‘fear’

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho considers himself to be an icon because he feels “at ease” with himself and does not “care what other people think”.

Confidence has never been an issue for the charismatic Portuguese coach, with his exploits at Porto helping to put him on the world map.

He famously announced his arrival at Chelsea by declaring himself to be a ‘Special One’, with further success at Stamford Bridge, Inter Milan and Real Madrid helping to enhance his profile.

A return to the dugout last summer with the Red Devils has offered an altogether different challenge, with a rebuilding job required at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho Manchester United

He has set about that task with his usual verve and vigour, though, and considers his achievements in the game so far to have put him in a bracket that allows for a sense of self-fulfilment.

Mourinho told GQ: “The people who get it right are the ones who feel good with themselves.

“I think I am an icon without being an icon. I am an icon for feeling at ease with myself.

“For me, that is the best concept of an ‘icon’. You don’t care what other people think, or what they say, you just care about the way you feel. To be ready and adapted for a specific moment.”

HD Jose Mourinho Manchester United

Mourinho also believes that his reputation can go before him at times, with the criticism levelled at him by rivals often driven by a fear factor that surrounds his success.

He added: “I am recognised in the four corners of the Earth, in every stadium in the world there will be some reaction from the fans.

“It normally starts with an insult – or a song. For me to sit down, or perhaps… to do other things. But I just wave and in the end they are happy, and then they want a picture.

“So I feel good among the football lovers around the world.

“During the game, they don’t like me, maybe they fear me or fear the team, but before or after the match it feels good.”

Icardi will pay for taking over Maxi Lopez’s ex-wife – Maradona

Argentina legend, Diego Maradona has told Inter Milan captain, Mauro Icardi to wait patiently for nemesis after taking over the wife of his former teammate and compatriot, Maxi Lopez.

Maradona labelled the promising striker a ‘traitor’ due to his involvement in the messy and much-publicised divorce between Lopez and his wife Wanda Nara.

An Argentine media personality, Wanda Nara had been married to Lopez while he and Icardi were still team-mates at Sampdoria, but became intimate with Icardi despite being in wedlock.

Icardi and Nara later got married in 2014, shortly after divorce proceedings with Lopez had been finalised, and Maradona is disappointed by the player’s action.

Maradona told Canale 5, “Icardi is a traitor.

“He will be a great player, but [Serie A icon Gabriel] Batistuta is worth ten of him.

“He [Icardi] can’t go to dinner with his team-mates then get married to the wife of his friend.

“He’ll pay for what he did to Maxi Lopez.”

Wenger Slapped With Four-Match Touchline Ban

The Arsenal manager will miss the crucial Premier League match against Chelsea after being sanctioned, even though he insists he said “nothing bad”

Arsene Wenger has been handed a four-match touchline ban and fined £25,000 for pushing fourth official Anthony Taylor during Arsenal’s win over Burnley.

The Frenchman was sent to the stands in injury time of the 2-1 victory after clashing with Taylor, towards whom he was also charged with using abusive or insulting language.

Wenger was also penalised for remaining in the tunnel area to watch the final minutes of the match.

As a result, he will not be in his technical area for the Gunners’ crucial Premier League fixture against Chelsea on February 4 as well as three other games.

Wenger will begin his suspension immediately, sitting in the stands for the FA Cup tie at Southampton on Saturday before Arsenal take on Watford, Chelsea and Hull City in the English top flight.

‘Juju’ not responsible for my injury – Success

Nigerian and Watford forward, Isaac Success, has described his injury setback at the club as frustrating, adding that he does not believe ‘juju’ is playing a part in his niggling knocks.

The 21-year-old just returned to light training after a hamstring injury.

The former Nigeria Under-20 player’s first season in England has not been a successful one so far as he has featured in only seven league games, scoring once.

The former Granada forward said he still has a lot to contribute to the Hornets despite his injury problems.

He told Watford’s official website on Thursday, “I’m good and I’m getting better.

“I’m hoping to train with the team on Monday.

“It’s frustrating as I’m trying to make my name in the Premier League.

“I haven’t had the chance to impress. Everyone knows my ability but I’ve got more to offer to the fans and the team.”

Success further debunked claims that his injuries were as a result of some African curses, known as ‘Juju’.

“I heard that.

“I’m a Christian and I really don’t believe in that. Injury comes when you are a professional and most of the time hard work can help prevent it.

“I’ve really started working harder than before to prevent injuries. I believe I’m coming back stronger and stronger than before.”

Man United are Not Favourites for EFL Cup- Jose Mourinho

The Red Devils boss suggested his side do not have any advantage over Southampton in the EFL Cup, seemingly in a veiled dig at the Liverpool manager

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that his side are not favourites to lift the EFL Cup – using Jurgen Klopp’s ‘windy’ excuse to play down his team’s chances.

The Red Devils defeated Hull City 3-2 on aggregate to set up a winner-takes-all clash with Southampton on Sunday, February 26.

Mourinho’s men have been installed as early favourites to win the final, despite losing on the night against the Tigers in Thursday’s meeting at the KCOM Stadium.

The Portuguese does not, however, believe his side should be considered as having a better chance than the Saints, claiming that the weather conditions could play an important part in deciding the winners.

“I don’t think we are favourites against nobody,” Mourinho told reporters after the game.

“It doesn’t matter against who, we are never favourites.

“Normally the stadium is windy and it’s difficult.”

Mourinho’s quotes could be perceived as a veiled dig at Klopp, with the German having blamed the wind for his side’s defeat to the Saints on Wednesday.

“First half, it was difficult – the wind was really strange, it was difficult to handle,” Klopp said.

“You saw one or two balls when the ball stopped in a moment when nobody knew about it. That was difficult for a football-playing side.”

The final is Southampton’s first major final since the 2003 FA Cup, while United are looking to lift the trophy for the fifth time.

It will also be Mourinho’s fourth League Cup final, having won the trophy on all three previous occasions as manager of Chelsea.

Celtic warn Chelsea off goalkeeper Craig Gordon

Celtic have told Chelsea that goalkeeper Craig Gordon is not for sale, Press Association Sport reports.

Chelsea have been linked with the Scotland international, who has resurrected his career with the Scottish Premiership champions after a knee injury seriously threatened to end it prematurely.

The Blues could be in the market for a new keeper as backup to Thibaut Courtois after sources told ESPN that Bournemouth are looking to sign Asmir Begovic.

But they were given no encouragement by Celtic, whose manager Brendan Rodgers outlined his desire to keep Gordon on Wednesday night as he said he was not surprised by Chelsea’s interest.

“His contract is up at the end of the season but there is an option for the club,” Rodgers said.

“Craig is very much a part of what I am doing here. He is 34 years old and can go on for a number of years yet and can be a real pillar of this team.”

Shanghai FA denies reported bid for Wayne Rooney

The Shanghai Football Association (FA) strongly rejected reports that either Shenhua or SIPG have made bids to lure Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney to the Chinese Super League.

United’s all-time leading goalscorer Rooney, 31, continues to be linked with a move to China after manager Jose Mourinho declared he would not stand in the skipper’s way.

Shenhua, who already boast Carlos Tevez, Obafemi Martins, Fredy Guarin and Giovanni Moreno, have since emerged as a possible destination.

However, the Shanghai FA dismissed the speculation and insisted both CSL clubs are committed to obeying the league’s new foreign quota, which only permits three foreigners in a starting XI.

“For all we know, both Shanghai clubs in the CSL [Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai SIPG] have finished their transfer business and there is no vacancy for foreign players whatsoever,” the statement read.

“The head of Shanghai FA described the report as totally groundless and sheer fictitious.

“Both Shanghai clubs have reiterated their promise to obey those 18 new rules introduced by the Chinese Football Association [CFA] to promote the healthy and stable development of the professional football leagues.”

No stranger to reports linking him with the CSL, Rooney – who was subject to a bid from Beijing Guoan before the start of the season – surpassed Bobby Charlton with his 250th United goal against Stoke City last week.

Rooney came off the bench in Thursday’s 2-1 second-leg defeat to Hull City as United progressed to the EFL Cup final 3-2 on aggregate.

Arsenal Vs Southampton Gets New Date

Due to the fact that Southampton will play in this season’s EFL Cup final, having beaten Liverpool in the semi-finals, Arsenal’s league game against the Saints will have to be rescheduled.

The game was set for Saturday February 25th, but with Southampton in action on the Sunday at Wembley, it will be postponed until later in the season.
Arsenal won the previous league encounter 2-1 in October thanks to a Laurent Koscielny overhead kick and an injury time penalty from Santi Cazorla, but went out of the EFL Cup in November losing 2-0 at the Emirates.

West Brom, Shanghai Shenhua fight over Ighalo

Watford striker, Odion Ighalo, is the subject of a transfer tussle between Premier League side, West Bromwich Albion and Chinese Super League outfit, Shenghai Shenhua.

West Brom have offered between £10m and £11m for the Super Eagles player, but Watford want in excess.

The DailyMail reports that there is a chance Ighalo could join Carloz Tevez in China. Talks are believed to be ongoing.

However, another Chinese club, Hebel China are monitoring the situation and could be ready to pay the Nigerian up to £200,000-per-week.

According to Talksport, the Pozzo family who owns Watford, are hoping they can keep Ighalo until the summer window.

The Chinese transfer window doesn’t close until February 28. But Watford would want a deal tied up in time, as the deadline for English clubs is January 31.

Wenger Gave Al Pacino-style Inspirational Speech – Walcott

Theo Walcott has said Arsene Wenger has tried to inspire Arsenal players to the Premier League by giving an impassioned speech reminiscent of Al Pacino’s in “Any Given Sunday.”

Arsenal beat Burnley 2-1, thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s penalty in added time, to go second in the Premier League but they trail leaders Chelsea by eight points.

The Gunners haven’t won the title since 2004 but Wenger’s determination to secure it again is as big as ever.

Walcott told Arsenal’s YouTube channel: “He did a speech the other day. I won’t be able to do the speech because it was that good. It genuinely reminded me of that film ‘Any Given Sunday’ and I actually said that to him.

“I was a bit embarrassed and didn’t know if he’d seen the film, but he showed his passion and how long it’s been since we’ve won the title.

“He wants it like all of his players, but you can tell he really wants it which is really good to see.”

Memphis: It Wasn’t Easy Under Mourinho

Although the Netherlands winger was snubbed by the Red Devils manager during his time at the club, he has described the Portuguese as a good person

Memphis Depay insists he holds no grudge against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho following his transfer to Ligue 1 side Lyon, describing him as “a great coach and person”.

The winger’s £16 million switch to France was confirmed on Friday following a frustrating campaign in the Premier League this season under Mourinho.

Memphis played just 20 minutes of league football under the Portuguese this term, following an impressive debut campaign under countryman Louis van Gaal last time out in which he made 45 appearances in all competitions.

And though Mourinho did not consider Memphis as a key player in his Red Devils squad, the United boss praised the 22-year-old’s attitude upon his departure and welcomed a return to the club in the future, something which the player appreciated.

“His words were nice. In Manchester, I always worked as I had to. For me personally, it wasn’t all that easy,” Memphis, whose transfer could earn United up to £21.7 million with add-ons, told OL TV. “I needed to play. But we didn’t have a bad relationship.

“He’s a great coach and a great person. Now we’ll see here how I play. In any case, I think he has said good things about me.”

Man United’s Wayne Rooney working on coaching badges to be manager

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has reiterated his plans to go into management, confirming he is currently undergoing his coaching qualifications.

Rooney, 31, is contracted with United until 2019 and became the club’s all-time record goal scorer with his equaliser at Stoke on Saturday, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton.

Speaking at a Football Writers’ Association dinner to celebrate the England striker’s achievements, Rooney said: “I’ve publicly said before I’d like to go into management.

“Obviously I’d have to complete my badges, which I’m doing at the minute.

“I feel it’d be a shame to have the knowledge I feel I have about football and walk away from it once I’ve finished playing.”

Upon receiving the award, Rooney added: “I’m humbled to be here and to receive this award. As a football player it’s great to receive awards and to get records like I did yesterday.

“The reaction to the record has been great and I thank everyone for their messages. For people to send me messages yesterday, mostly across social media but also some private ones, was brilliant and I really appreciate them all.”

Last week, Rooney’s former England teammate Steven Gerrard returned to Liverpool to become the club’s academy coach, with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp backing the midfielder to go on and be a manager.

Ex-England and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has also previously voiced his desire to one day manage the Blues.

Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, has denied reports claiming that she is about to leave English Women’s Super League (WSL) side, Arsenal Ladies, for an unnamed Chinese club.

The reigning CAF African Women Footballer of the Year, says the transfer only exists in the imagination of the reporter.

“I’m 100% at my club, Arsenal Ladies, I do not know the source of the report that I’m moving to China,” she told SuperSport.

“I’m 100% Arsenal Ladies nothing more than that I’m on a break in Nigeria, a longer break after a major championship, Africa Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon.”

Oshoala also spoke on her CAF award and promised to impact on upcoming youngsters in football.

She added: “I feel really happy and excited winning the African best player award for the second time.

“I will continue to work hard to steadily better my previously performances both at club and national levels.

“Of course, I have charity work as well as foundation aimed at helping the upcoming player.

“I hold a yearly U17 football championship as a way of giving back to the society and the younger ones.

“I will continue to do my best to ensure more ‘Oshoalas’ are discovered and brought to football limelight.”

Nadal survives Monfils fightback to reach quarter-finals

Rafa Nadal has returned to the Grand Slam big-time by fending off Gael Monfils 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-4 in a tense clash on Monday to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that former champion Nadal had not reached the last eight in a major since the 2015 French Open.

This explains why he celebrated wildly after closing out the two-hour 56-minute clash at a packed Rod Laver Arena.

It was not the most convincing of wins for the 30-year-old Spaniard, who was rattled when Monfils rallied in the fourth set.

However, the 14-times Grand Slam champion was clinical when it counted to keep his pursuit of a 15th major title alive.

Nadal will meet third seed Milos Raonic for a place in the semi-finals.

I’m ready to help Gerrard become the best manager he can be – Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has labelled Steven Gerrard’s decision to join Liverpool’s Academy staff as “wonderful news for football” as he builds a base to enter management.

The 36-year-old called time on a stellar playing career last November and will help shape his boyhood club’s next generation as a coach at the same youth system that developed his talents.

The former Reds skipper will begin his duties at Kirkby in February, initially in a floating role, and Klopp commended Gerrard’s willingness to swerve shortcuts as he works towards taking full control of a side in future.

“We had a very, very good, very long talk together,” the German detailed at Melwood on Monday.

“Probably everybody in this room knows better than I do that he’s a wonderful guy.

“For me, it was only important to know what Steven wants, actually, and he said he wants to be a manager in the future. So, that’s cool.

“I said from my side, everything I can do to help him on this way, to make him the best manager he can be, I’m ready for this and I would like to do it.”

Klopp helped advise Gerrard on how to kickstart the next phase of his career and has no doubt the Liverpool legend will succeed in a challenging environment given his diligence and dedication.

“We spoke about different things, different options and now he’s at the Academy,” the manager said.

“That’s great for us as a club, and I think for him it’s perfect because being a manager is a job you have to learn.

“When a person like Steven Gerrard – the player he was, but more the person he is – is ready to make the steps, that’s wonderful news for football.

“Combining the playing experience with all the things he’ll learn from now on, that’s a bright future and is brilliant.”

Moses Doing Great Job For Chelsea – Alonso

Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso has paid tribute to Super Eagles forward Victor Moses for his impact for the English Premier League leaders so far this term.

Moses has been a regular in the Chelsea team this term and has been one of the key performers in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation.

The Nigeria international had previously struggled to make much of an impact at Stamford Bridge but seems to have blossomed under the former Juventus manager, scoring three goals in 21 league appearances from his wing-back position.

Speaking to Chelsea’s website, Alonso said: “I think it is a good balance for the team (Moses’ right wing-back role).

“There was no need for us to talk to each other before about what we were going to do. A lot of games he goes more forward and I maybe stay more at the back, but that also depends on how the other team plays and it’s good to have variation and different options.

“Victor is doing a great job and hopefully we can keep helping the team as we have been doing in the previous games.”

West Brom pull out of Ighalo’s deal

West Bromwich Albion have apparently lost interest in signing Odion Ighalo, because of the high price Watford are demanding for the player.

The Baggies manager, Tony Pulis, is hoping to use the £12million received for Saido Berahino to strengthen his squad in the final days of the window.

Last week, they reportedly bid £17million for Ighalo, but it seems that will not be enough to land the Nigerian striker.

Pulis said: “I’ve spoken to the chairman John Williams about it and John is keen on us to get a couple in.”

“The squad is quite thin and we need to do that.

“But in respect of us getting him (Ighalo), no. I think Watford want too much so I don’t think we’ll be in that one.”

Ighalo has endured a miserable season so far with the Hornets and has only scored twice in all competition this season, after netting 17 times last season.

Several weeks ago, the 27-year-old was rumoured to be close to joining compatriot John Obi Mikel, in the Chinese Super League.

Ighalo has long been linked with a big-money transfer to China and Watford rejected a £38million pounds bid for him from Shangai SIPG last year .

“Yes, it’s a possibility he could move to China,” a source disclosed to journalists at the time.

“There should be an update in this regard this week.”

Ighalo only signed a new five-year contract with ‘The Hornets’ last summer.

Nwankwo Kanu, Brown Ideye and Osaze Odemwingie are other Nigerian strikers who have played for West Brom in the past.

I’m Open to China Move – Rooney

England and Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney says he is not ruling out a move to China.

The Manchester United’s all time highest goal scorer concedes that he wants to play more games and is open to a change after his contract ends.

He,however, insists he is happy at the club.

Rooney surpassed Bobby Charlton as United’s top scorer with his 250th goal in their 1-1 Premier League draw at Stoke City on Saturday.

The 31-year-old came in as a substitute in that match and his future is not certain, with the player no longer an automatic starter under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese gaffer had earlier pointed out that Rooney is free to join a club in the Chinese Super League, CSL.

Rooney told Sky Sports after collecting the Football Writers’ Association’s Tribute Award on Sunday, “I’m committed.

“I have been at the club for a long time.

“Football is a strange game. Anything can happen and things change very quickly but I am happy at Manchester United.

“Of course, as I have said before, I want to play more games.

“I am in a happy place, a good moment personally, so I think I have a year, with an option [of a] year to go. We will see what happens and what happens after that.”

Rooney could possibly join CSL side, Beijing Guoan that have been on his trail since the end of last season.

“Arsene Wenger should be given a lengthy ban for pushing referee”- Graham Poll

Former Premier League referee, Graham Poll, has called for Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, to be handed a lengthy ban for shoving fourth official Anthony Taylor, during their 2-1 win over Burnley on Sunday.

Wenger was sent off by referee Jon Moss, after his protests following a penalty awarded to the visitors, in the third minute of stoppage time.

The Gunners boss continued to watch from the tunnel and was ushered away by Taylor. He was then seen throwing his arms towards Taylor, before going down the tunnel. Wenger has since denied pushing Taylor.

Writing in his DailyMail column, Poll said: “Jon Moss often attracts criticism but it was one of his assistants, Andy Halliday, who was at the centre of the big decisions at the Emirates on Sunday. First up, there was Granit Xhaka’s third red card of the season — and second for Arsenal — for a ‘scissors’ tackle on Burnley’s Steven Defour. The actual contact wasn’t extreme but it endangered the safety of the opponent and Moss was absolutely correct to dismiss him after being advised by Halliday.

“Then, Moss had the easiest decision of the day when Francis Coquelin clearly brought down Ashley Barnes for Burnley’s penalty. Inexplicably, Arsene Wenger went berserk and was asked to leave the technical area. He reluctantly did so but tried to stay in the tunnel which he is not permitted to do. Fourth official Anthony Taylor advised him to move at which point Wenger appeared to shove Taylor. He must face a lengthy touchline ban. Wenger and his team have benefited from plenty of close calls by officials this season and he should have remembered that and stayed calm.

“There was more fortune for them in the last minute as Laurent Koscielny was fouled in the penalty area by Ben Mee. Halliday again assisted an unsighted Moss and indicated the foul but replays showed he had missed that Koscielny was in an offside position as Sanchez crossed.”

Iwobi could be like Payet in a few years, claims Henry

The former Gunners striker has backed up Arsene Wenger by insisting that the Premier League title hopefuls do not need the wantaway West Ham forward

Thierry Henry says Arsenal have no need to sign Dimitri Payet during the January transfer window as Alex Iwobi can be as good as West Ham’s wantaway Frenchman.

Payet is pushing for a move away from London Stadium, with a return to former club Marseille seemingly his most likely destination.

Arsenal have also been linked with the talented 29-year-old, with Arsene Wenger rarely out of the market for creative influences in the final third of the field.

The Gunners boss has, however, been quick to play down any suggestion that he could be tempted to table a bid for a prized asset on the books of a Premier League rival.

Dimitri Payet West Ham

Arsenal legend Henry understands that stance, with a man who netted a club record 228 goals  during his time in north London of the opinion that Nigeria international Iwobi should be allowed to work on fulfilling his potential without seeing his path blocked.

Henry told Sky Sports: “I don’t think Arsenal need a player like Payet at the moment.

“They have Iwobi who could be like Payet in a few years’ time, he has been good for Arsenal playing through the middle.

Alex Iwobi

“Iwobi needs games to fulfil his potential and signing a player like Payet could limit his playing time, and it could spell doom for his development.”

Iwobi made the breakthrough at Emirates Stadium last season, making his debut in a League Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday in October 2015.

He ended the campaign with two goals in 21 appearances across all competitions, and has added another three to that tally this term.

At just 20 years of age, there is still plenty of time for him to work on his game and bring the consistency to his performances that the likes of Payet have been showing in the Premier League for some time.

Gabriel Jesus Cleared To Make Debut Against Tottenham

Manchester city have been cleared to play 19-year-old Brazilian winger, Gabriel Jesus, against Tottenham on Saturday, after formally completing his £27 million move from Palmeiras.

The Brazil international, Jesus, has agreed to a five-year deal with City in August.

He stayed with Palmeiras until the end of the Brazilian season in December.

The footballer has won an Olympic gold medal with his country, having scored three times in the men’s football tournament in Rio, after which he was promoted to the senior Brazil team, for whom he has scored five times in six games.

Jesus arrived City at the start of January but registration to play for his new club was delayed while the English football association examined documents relating to his move.

Manchester United to employ full-time counter terrorism manager

Manchester United believe they are the first sports club in the country to have a full-time counter terrorism manager.

The appointment was revealed at a recent fans’ forum, and Press Association Sport understands the role will be filled by a former inspector from Greater Manchester Police’s specialist search unit.

The development comes at a time when Old Trafford’s security is under increased scrutiny.

United saw the final match of the 2015-16 season against Bournemouth called off after what proved to be a fake bomb, left behind following a training exercise, was found in a toilet.

There was another incident in November when two individuals managed to break off from a stadium tour and stay overnight at Old Trafford ahead of the match with Arsenal.

On the whole, security has been beefed up around the club since the Paris attacks in November 2015 when the Stade de France was targeted on a night when 130 were killed.

Vehicles are now routinely checked as they enter the premises, while individuals heading into the stadium are searched.

More security supervisors have been deployed after fans complained at the time it took for searches at turnstiles.

Xabi Alonso set to retire in June 2017.

Spanish World Cup winner and double European champion Xabi Alonso is set to retire at the end of the season when his Bayern Munich contract expires, a report in Germany said.

Leaders Bayern kick off the second half of the Bundesliga season at Freiburg on Friday in their bid for a fifth straight German league title with the 35-year-old Alonso poised to end his playing career in June.

It would mean the German giants could lose significant experience for next season with club captain and ex-Germany skipper Philipp Lahm also reportedly considering retiring in June to take over as Bayern’s team manager.

Having joined Bayern for the 2014/15 season, Alonso is bidding to finish with a third straight German league title with Munich currently three points clear in the table.

Alonso has won 16 titles for clubs and country, including the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European championships with Spain, making 114 international appearances.

He retired from international duty in August 2014.

He has won the Champions league twice with two different clubs.

He started out at Real Sociedad and joined Liverpool in 2004 after being named Spanish player of the year in 2003.

He was part of the Liverpool side which famously won the 2005 Champions League title in a penalty shoot-out, coming back from 3-0 down against AC Milan in Istanbul.

After five years and 143 English Premier League appearances with Liverpool, Alonso joined Real Madrid in 2009.

He again won the Champions League in 2014 when current Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti steered Real to a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid before Alonso transferred to Germany for the 2014/15 season.

Former Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal retires from coaching.

Ex-Manchester United and Netherlands manager, Louis van Gaal, says he has retired from coaching after a 26-year career.

The 65-year-old van Gaal has been out of work since being sacked by United hours after winning the FA Cup in May 2016.

“I thought maybe I would stop, then I thought it would be a sabbatical, but now I do not think I will return to coaching,” Van Gaal was quoted as saying by a Dutch newspaper .

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that van Gaal also had spells in charge of Ajax, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ.

He made the announcement on Monday after receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Dutch government for his contribution to football.

He cited family issues for his decision, with the newspaper saying it was partly motivated by the sudden death of his daughter’s husband last month.

“So much has happened in my family. You become a human being again with your nose pressed to the facts,” he added.

The Dutchman also revealed he turned down lucrative offers to continue his coaching career in the Far East.

Van Gaal played as a midfielder for Ajax, Royal Antwerp, Telstar, Sparta Rotterdam and AZ between 1972 and 1987.

He then moved into coaching, first as an assistant at AZ and followed by the same role at Ajax.

He replaced Leo Beenhakker as Ajax head coach in 1991 and went on to preside over a period of sustained success.

Van Gaal won the Dutch league title on three occasions as well as the 1992 UEFA Cup and the 1995 Champions League title.

Van Gaal was asked to emulate that success at Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

He inherited Bobby Robson’s side in 1997 and led them to two successive La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey.

His country came calling in 2000, but his first stint in charge lasted less than two years when The Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup.

It was the first time they had missed the competition since 1986.

The Dutchman’s second spell at FC Barcelona was even shorter —- eight months —- as he left midway through the season with the club hovering just above the relegation zone.

He then guided AZ Alkmaar to the 2005/2006 Eredivisie title before moving to the Bundesliga, where he helped Bayern Munich to the 2009/2010 Bundesliga title.

The Dutch national side approached Van Gaal again in 2012 and this time The Netherlands became one of the first two European countries, along with Italy, to qualify for Brazil 2014.

There, they went on to finish in third place.

After much speculation, he joined Manchester United in May 2014, signing a three-year contract to succeed David Moyes.

However, United replaced him with Jose Mourinho after just two years following a fifth-placed Premier League finish in the 2015/2016 season.

NAN reports that the club’s first FA Cup triumph since 2004 was even not sufficient to save him.

Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi truly on the path to greatness – By Andrew Mangan

After a November night that saw him struggle to find his best form and score an unfortunate own goal in the 2-2 draw against Paris Saint-German in the Champions League, Alex Iwobi found himself taken out of the firing line by Arsene Wenger.

Although he started an EFL Cup game and the European match against FC Basel, Iwobi was kept in reserve in the Premier League. He was unused in the 3-1 home win over Bournemouth, came on in the 88th minute of the 5-1 win at West Ham and got about 20 minutes in each of the games against Stoke and Everton.

It was smart management from Wenger, who has illustrated his belief in the 20-year-old attacker’s talent and potential more than once.

Selecting him away at Barcelona in the Champions League in March of last year was a way of giving a side that needed it something fresh, but it wasn’t a change merely for the sake of change. Wenger saw the maturity and quality in Iwobi’s game, felt confident he could perform on a stage that grand and wasn’t let down by this belief.

Yet as with most young players, fluctuations in form are normal. There’s almost a carefree nature to the early part of their breakthrough. Expectations are low, there’s no real pressure as people understand the circumstances, and that allows them to play with real freedom.

Over time, though, that changes. Once you show you can perform to a certain level, that’s what people begin to expect. With that comes pressure, perhaps some self-doubt, and more difficulty playing to your potential.

Having given Iwobi some time out of the spotlight to work things out on the training ground and take stock of his situation, Wenger was rewarded with an excellent performance from the attacking midfielder in the 4-0 win over Swansea.

He helped force two own goals — although Iwobi says he’s going to try and claim the first — and was involved in the buildup to the fourth, which was tucked away in the end by Alexis Sanchez.

It was a display of creativity, pace and power from a young man who has serious potential and who, if he stays on the right track, is destined to be one of Gunners’ great homegrown stars. Iwobi joined the club at age nine and has come up through the academy system to become a fixture in the first team.

Only Sanchez, defenders Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal, and Mesut Ozil have started more games for Arsenal this season, and the progress Iwobi is making as a player is hugely exciting.

It might also be to his benefit that he declared for the country of his birth, Nigeria, when it comes to international football. He had represented England at junior levels, but over the last couple of years was completely ignored by the FA, thus making his decision to follow in the footsteps of his legendary uncle Jay-Jay Okocha even easier.

There’s no doubt that if he were an England international playing this well and showing so much verve in his performances, people would be talking about him a lot more. It is a double-edged sword, though, because with that comes increased scrutiny and perhaps greater pressure.

And there is not much certain sections of the football press like more than building a young player up so that they can knock him down again. Look at some of the treatment received by Raheem Sterling, for example, to see how that works.

17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer wins opening Australian Open match

Swiss 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer won his first match at the Australian Open Monday after coming off a injury-blighted 2016.

Federer downed his one-time junior rival Jurgen Melzer of Austria 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in 2hr 6min on Rod Laver Arena.

The Swiss 17th seed will now play American qualifier Noah Rubin in the second round.

“I hope I can stick around for a bit longer yet.”

Federer, at 35, is bidding to become the second oldest man in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title after Australian Ken Rosewall.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion, playing in his 69th major, is seeded 17 at this year’s Australian Open after a knee injury restricted him to just seven Tour events last year.

Federer dropped out of the world’s top 10 rankings for first time in 734 weeks or over 14 years last November and his 17th ranking is his lowest position since May 2001.

He fell behind to an early break against Melzer in the opening set but once he gained his playing rhythm he broke back and then again in the 11th game.

Melzer, who grew up in the juniors with Federer, levelled the match taking the second set.

But the Swiss legend whipped through the third set in 28 minutes with the Australian crowd cheering his every winning point.

Federer finished off in style with two breaks of serve to run a convincing winner.

AFCON 2019: Super Eagles to battle South Africa, Libya for qualification

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will have to battle against South Africa and Libya in their bid to return to competing at the biennial Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2019.

Placed in Group E in the draws conducted on Thursday, the Super Eagles will also be facing Seychelles in the AFCON 2019 qualifiers.

The three-time African champions have failed to qualify for two straight AFCONs – the 2015 and 2017 editions – and the third in four editions, after also missing out on the 2012 edition.

The next AFCON will be hosted by four-time African champions, Cameroon.

Only group winners are guaranteed a place at the next edition of the AFCON tournament

Cameroon will be hosting Africa’s biggest football event for the first time in 45 years, having last hosted in 1972, and edition which was won by Congo.

The central African country already hosted the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) last year, which Nigeria won.

Meanwhile, Chad, who pulled out of the qualifiers for the 2017 AFCON from Nigeria’s qualifying group, are banned from this edition of the competition as a result.

This year’s AFCON begins on Saturday in Libreville, Gabon.

Makelele appointed as Swansea assistant coach

Former Chelsea defensive midfielder, Claude Makelele has been contracted by English Premier League side, Swansea City as assistant coach to new manager, Paul Clement until the end of the current campaign.

The former Real Madrid player has worked alongside Clement when he was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s background staff at Paris Saint-German.

They have previously been at Chelsea together when Clement started working with the first-team under former coach, Guus Hiddink.

Clement took over first-team duties at Swansea at the start of 2017, replacing Bob Bradley after he was sacked  and has been given the task of saving the team from relegation.

The club said Makelele will be on the bench on Saturday’s home game against Arsenal.

A statement on the club’s website noted, “Swansea City is pleased to confirm that former French international Claude Makelele has joined the club’s coaching staff.

“The 43-year-old, who has signed a deal until the end of the season, reunites with head coach Paul Clement, who he worked with during his playing stint at Chelsea and as a coach with Paris Saint-Germain.

“The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSG midfielder has been named as an assistant coach… Makelele will get his first taste of the Liberty on Saturday when he’s in the dug-out for the Swans’ Premier League fixture with Arsenal.”

Asisat Oshoala Denies China Move Reports

two-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala has denied media reports that she is on the verge of dumping Arsenal Ladies to join an unnamed club in China.

Nigeria striker Oshoala, through her media representative Tobi Onayade, revealed to Completesportsnigeria.com that she has not considered leaving England at the moment and she is focused on preparing for the coming Women’s Soccer League season.

The former Liverpool forward failed to hit top form for the Gunners Ladies last season scoring only twice in 13 appearances in the league.

“Asisat is not leaving Arsenal even if there are offers,” Onayade told Completesportsnigeria.com on Wednesday. “Her focus is to prove a point at Arsenal this season in England after her slow start.

“At 22 why would she opt for China because of the financial gains now? No, she’s fast becoming a brand that will earn more on and off the pitch.”

With Oshoala in the Arsenal Ladies squad last season, they finished third in the Women’s Super League table behind winners Manchester City and Chelsea.

Arsenal Ladies will begin their Football Association Women’s Super League season with a home clash against Notts County LFC in April.

Manchester City charged by FA over anti-doping rules

The Football Association has confirmed that Manchester City has been charged in relation to rules on anti-doping.

Every club is required to provide accurate details of training sessions and player whereabouts, so they are available for testing at all times.

“Manchester City have been charged in relation to the FA’s rules on anti-doping. It is alleged that the club failed to ensure that their ‘club whereabouts’ information was accurate, contrary to Regulation 14(d),” an FA statement read.

A source told ESPN FC that a charge is brought if the FA alleges it has not been kept up to date on the club’s whereabouts on three occasions.

City have until January 19 to respond to the charge and may be fined if they are found guilty.

Mayweather Offers McGregor $15m To Fight With Him

Former welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather said Wednesday he was “interested” in a fight with Conor McGregor and had already offered the mixed martial arts star $15 million to climb into the ring with him.

Mayweather, who retired in 2015 with a perfect 49-0 record, told ESPN’s First Take program that a McGregor bout was the only thing that could tempt him to end his exile from the ring.

The 39-year-old was responding to a question about whether he would consider a rematch with Filipino star Manny Pacquiao following the duo’s much-heralded “Fight of the Century” two years ago.

“Only thing I’m probably interested in is the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said. “I’m a businessman and it makes business sense. I believe in what me and (business adviser) Al Haymon talk about every day — I believe in working smarter, not harder.”

Mayweather revealed initial talks with McGregor’s representatives had taken place, but stalled.

“We tried to make the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said. “They know what my number is. My number is a guaranteed $100 million. That was my number.
“We are willing to give him $15 million and then we can talk about splitting the percentage — the back end — on the pay-per-view.
“But of course, we’re the ‘A side.’ How can a guy talk about making $20 or $30 million if he has never made $8 or $9 million in a fight?”

Mayweather appeared to suggest that McGregor’s recent comments calling for a fight were insincere.

“You guys keep hearing all these different rumors about different fighters want to face Floyd Mayweather,” he said.

“Everybody keeps talking about Conor McGregor. He’s blowing smoke up everybody’s ass. Dana White, the UFC — let’s make it happen. Bring him over to the boxing world and I’ll show him what it’s like.”

In November, McGregor challenged Mayweather to a fight under mixed martial arts rules and said he would only face Mayweather in a boxing ring for $100 million.

“Much respect to Floyd. He’s a solid businessman… as far as real fighting — true, pure unarmed combat — Floyd don’t want none of this,”
McGregor said.
“He does not want none of this. He wants it under boxing rules. He wants a boxing match. He doesn’t want a fight.
“Give Floyd a shout, tell him I’m coming. Tell him to run around Showtime offices. I want $100 million to fight him under boxing rules because he’s afraid of a real fight.”

Chinese Super League Can Rival Premier League – Oscar

New Shanghai SIPG recruit Oscar believes that the Chinese Super League could eventually compete with the Premier League if more star names make the move to Asia.

Oscar made a massive €60 million (£51m) switch from Premier League leaders Chelsea to SIPG earlier in January, linking up with fellow Brazil international Hulk and coach Andre-Villas Boas.

The 25-year-old, who scored in his first appearance in a friendly win over Al Batin, arrives at a time when Carlos Tevez, Axel Witsel, Ramires, Alex Teixeira, Ezequiel Lavezzi, John Obi Mikel, Graziano Pelle, Burak Yilmaz, Paulinho, Renato Augusto, Fredy Guarin and Jackson Martinez all call China home.

And Oscar feels that the lucrative CSL will only get better with further investment.

“If they continue in this way, maybe yes, because they have lots of good projects,” he told Sky Sports.

“Of course the Premier League [has higher] level of players in the world but the Chinese guys are very good. They help the new players a lot and I hope they continue this because I come to help.

“The transfer was good for me, good for Chelsea, good for Shanghai, and I’m so happy to come to the Chinese Super League.

“I think the Chinese clubs [spend] a lot of money for the players to go to China, to make the league stronger. They made me an offer and I’m very happy to come.”

‘I Was Like a Ghost’ – Hazard Reflects on Chelsea Struggles in 2015-16

The Belgian forward admits he wants ‘to be the best again’ after enduring a tough time as the reigning PFA Player of the Year last season

Eden Hazard’s transformation from Premier League title winner and PFA Player of the Year to Chelsea also-ran surprised the Belgian as much as it did those watching from afar.

The talented forward enjoyed a sparkling 2014-15 campaign, with a 19-goal haul from 52 appearances in all competitions seeing him land prestigious personal and collective honours.

He was, however, to endure a humbling fall from grace last season, alongside many of his Stamford Bridge colleagues.

Hazard – having been billed as a contender to challenge Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the right to be called the best player on the planet – was a shadow of his former self as he was forced to wait until January before opening his 2015-16 goal account.

The 26-year-old admits he performed “like a ghost” as the Blues stumbled their way to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League.

He has been back on form this season, though, and is setting his sights of more major silverware, with nine goals added to a cause that has Chelsea sat five points clear at the top of the table.

Hazard told Fox Sports: “I learned a lot [from last season].

“Sometimes you are at the top like we were two years ago and sometimes it is difficult for everyone.

“For me, I was the best player two years ago, but last season I was like a ghost.

“I want to be the best again and win titles.”

It is not just the English top-flight crown that Hazard has in sights, though, with the FA Cup very much there to be shot at.

Chelsea have enjoyed considerable success in the competition in recent times – emerging victorious four times in six seasons between 2007 and 2012 – but Hazard only joined after the most recent of those triumphs and is yet to get his hands on the famous trophy.

On the back of a 4-1 third round victory over Peterborough on Sunday, he added: “The league is important, but the FA Cup even more as I’ve never won it.

“So I hope that this season I can win this trophy as I have won the league and the League Cup – now I just need the FA Cup.”

Kanu’s Goal Against Chelsea In My Arsenal Top 5 – Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says Nigeria legend Nwankwo Kanu’s goal against Chelsea in 1999 ranks among his top five since joining the London club in 1996.

Wenger made this known while commenting on Olivier Giroud’s stunning goal against Crystal Palace on Sunday which he also ranked in his top five Arsenal goals.

Trailing 2-0 to Chelsea and with 15 minutes left, former Super Eagles superstar Kanu scored two quick goals to make it 2-2.

And on the stroke of 90 minutes, close to the corner flag, Kanu whipped in a right-foot curler into to the roof of the net to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback win for Arsenal.

The French manager also listed Dennis Bergkamp’s goals against Leicester City and Newcastle (1997, 2002 respectively) and Thierry Henry’s solo goal against Real Madrid in the 2006 UEFA Champions League, as part of the best five goals he has witnessed as Arsenal manager.

“I’ve been spoiled in my career, I had many great players and many great strikers. [Giroud’s goal is] certainly in the top five,” Wenger told standard.co.uk.

“I remember Bergkamp, Henry with special goals.

“Bergkamp at Leicester, Newcastle. Thierry Henry at Real Madrid, Liverpool. Kanu at Chelsea. It’s difficult for me not to forget goals over 20 years.

“When you score 70, 80 a year by now that makes 1,600 goals. It’s difficult to get the best five.”

Arsene Wenger Urges Alex Iwobi to Score More

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has called on Alex Iwobi to add goals to his game.

Iwobi was in fine form for the Gunners on New Year’s Day, scoring the second goal as they defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 at the Emirates.

After the match, Wenger praised the Nigerian’s “exceptional” abilities as a playmaker, after he filled in for the sick Mesut Ozil.

It was his first Premier League start in the no. 10 role, as Wenger usually deploys him on the wings.

“I think he had a very good game, on top of that now he starts to score goals,” Wenger said afterwards.

“His quality of pass, of availability, is exceptional for a young boy. It lacked a little bit quality of reception in dangerous areas.

“And I hope that these goals he scores now will give him the taste as well to go [into positions] where he can finish it off. Scoring goals is always a science, when a guy starts to score goals in training they come in games. And he has that now, in training he starts to score goals. I’m sure he will score as well in the games.”

#Rumours: Ryan Giggs Favourite for Swansea manager’s job

Bookmakers have installed former Manchester United winger, Ryan Giggs, as the favourite to replace Bob Bradley as Swansea City manager.

Bradley was fired on Tuesday, after only 11 games in charge of the Welsh club.

“Unfortunately things haven’t worked out as planned and we felt we had to make the change with half the Premier League season remaining,” chairman Huw Jenkins said in the statement confirming the club’s decision.

“With the club going through such a tough time, we have to try and find the answers to get ourselves out of trouble.”

Giggs is the 4/6 favourite to take the vacant position, ahead of Gary Rowett, Chris Coleman and Alan Pardew.

The former Wales international almost took over at Swansea, but he was not appointed at the time due to “mixed messages”.

“There I was enjoying my year out, and I get the call off Swansea,” Giggs told ITV.

“I met with them a couple of times but in the end there was just mixed messages from the football side and the ownership side of the club.

“I just felt their ambitions did not really match mine, so it didn’t quite work out.”

Wenger Blasts Chelsea’s Loan System

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said one of football’s “big problems” is the system used by clubs like Chelsea, to stockpile many young players and repeatedly loan them out.

The Blues currently have 30 players out on loan.

“It is one of the big problems in the modern game,” Wenger told Arsenal’s official magazine.

“You’ve invested a lot of money into players because we’re paying more and more money, and then at the age of 20 you don’t usually get much money for any of the players, so the reflex is to stockpile the players. That’s not right.

“When you look at the number of loans that happen here and there, the whole system has to be thought about again because we have two kinds of solution in there.

“The first is to continue developing players, the second step is just to make sure your investment is safe – that’s not the right way to think about it but it’s the natural reflex for the clubs.”

Wenger suggested the solution is for smaller sides to be part-owned by Premier League teams and used as feeder clubs.

“Maybe you could create a possibility for some clubs to own part of a League One club as a feeder club,” he added.

“After that, a limitation on the number of players on your books could work.

“The way a youth team is organised now is that all the best young players go to the richest clubs, which is where they have fewer chances to develop, so you have to make sure the system shares out the best young players equally.

“It’s difficult because the development of the players depends on the concentration of the good players. The more good players you have together, the more chance they have of becoming even better players.”

Official: Oscar Signs Shanghai SIPG Deal

The Brazilian midfielder’s switch to the Chinese Super League is made official as the Blues say goodbye to a Premier League and Europa League winner after four years

Chelsea have announced that midfielder Oscar has agreed to join Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG.

The Brazilian midfielder spent four years at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League, Europa League and League Cup during that time.

He is now set for a contract reportedly worth as much as £20 million-per-year in the Chinese Super League, while the £52m (€60m) fee being paid to the Blues makes him the club’s most expensive ever sale as well as one of the biggest deals to ever take a player out of the Premier League.

“Oscar will arrive in Shanghai in the coming days and he will become a member of our team,” read a statement from Shanghai SIPG. “The playmaker, who is renowned for his attacking abilities, will help the club push for the title in the new season.”

After Chelsea confirmed that a bid had been made for Oscar earlier in December, Blues manager Antonio Conte expressed his sorrow that such a talented player was leaving his squad.

“I am sorry because he’s leaving as a really good player and a really good man,” the Italian remarked. “I must be honest about this but I also understand him and his decision.”

The 25-year-old had struggled to nail down a regular place in Conte’s team at Stamford Bridge, having made only five starts in the Premier League this season and a further four appearances off the bench, as well as playing twice in the League Cup.

Over his full Chelsea career, Oscar racked up 203 total appearances in all competitions, scoring 38 goals in the process.

He now joins a former Blues boss in the form of Andre Villas-Boas, although the two’s spells with the London club never overlapped.

Shanghai become Oscar’s fourth senior club, the midfielder having previously turned out for Sao Paulo and Internacional in his native Brazil.

He joins a growing list of increasingly high-profile players making the move to China as the economically powerful nation sees more and more money flood into its game.

#Rumours : Sam Allardyce set to replace Pardew as Crystal Palace manager

Crystal Palace are eyeing Sam Allardyce as their new manager, after they sacked Alan Pardew on Thursday.

According to Sky Sports News HQ, the London club will meet with Allardyce’s representatives in the next 24 hours for talks.

There is no agreement in place yet between Palace chairman, Steve Parish and Allardyce.

Allardyce lost the England job in September after only one game in charge.

His position became untenable, after footage emerged of him giving tips on how to get around FA transfer rules, to undercover reporters from Daily Telegraph, who posed as businessmen from a Far East firm.

But he made it clear he is keen to return to football management in the near future.

Nobody Endorsed you for CAF Position – Dalung tells Pinnick

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has insisted that nobody has endorsed president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), for the CAF position he is running for.

“I received a communique of the Congress which referred to my action as uninformed. Instead of providing me with the minutes, the Congress went ahead to endorse its president, two weeks after its Secretary-General had sent a letter of his nomination to CAF,” he said.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports wants to make it clear that Nigeria has not endorsed anybody to contest. The Ministry will constitute a committee to screen and recommend to government a suitable candidate who will represent Nigeria.”

Dalung had asked the NFF to appoint an independent auditor to look through their finances. The Minister says since that has not happened, the government will now embark on a full-scale investigation.

He said: “FIFA’s forensic audit has raised concerns about documentation of the federation’s accounts. Nineteen grave issues were identified in FIFAs audit report which needs to be looked into. The federal government has already set machinery in motion to embark on a full scale investigation of those issues.

“We are committed to getting rid of all obstacles capable of destroying probity, credibility, transparency and accountability in sports administration in Nigeria.”

Falcons Finally Release AWCON Trophy

The Super Falcons have released the African Women Cup of Nations trophy they won to the Federal Government.

Nigeria’s senior female national team, had embarked on a sit-in protest at their Abuja hotel, over the failure of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to pay their outstanding bonuses and allowances.

They held on to the trophy they won in Cameroon and also refused to vacate their hotel.

However, after the FG released funds for them to be paid, they have finally released the cup.

It was handed over on Thursday, to the NFF Secretary-Genral, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.

Sanusi said the trophy would be presented to the appropriate authority and thanked the Federal Government for the release of funds to pay the team.

Pardew Sacked as Crystal Palace Boss

The London club sit just one point above the relegation spot after 17 games, and have taken the option of getting rid of the former Newcastle United boss

Alan Pardew has left his role as manager of Crystal Palace, the club have confirmed.

Pardew left Newcastle United to take over at Selhurst Park in January 2015 and led them to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League.

But his first full season in charge did not prove as successful in the league, Palace enduring a dreadful second half of the campaign as they finished just five points above the relegation zone.

The former Southampton and Charlton Athletic boss led Palace to the FA Cup final, only to see his side beaten 2-1 in extra time as Jesse Lingard scored the winner for Manchester United.

And Pardew has failed to turn around their fortunes in the first half of the 2016-17 season, with Palace just a point above the bottom three with 15 points from 17 games.

Chairman Steve Parish said: “I would like to put on record our sincere gratitude for the tremendous service Alan has given us, both in his time here as manager and previously as a player.

“Following a fantastic second half of 2014-15, the 2015-16 season culminated in only narrowly missing out on winning the FA Cup as well as securing our Premier League place for a record-breaking fourth time.

“During his tenure Alan’s hard work and dedication were without question, he has improved so many areas of the club and we wish him the very best for the future.

“With games now coming thick and fast over the holiday period the club are hoping to put someone in place as quickly as possible but have nothing to say about a replacement at this time.”

Chapecoense Officially Handed Copa Sudamericana Trophy

The Brazillian club that left the world mourning recently following a plane crash which killed their players, Chapecoense, have been given the Copa Sudamericana trophy.

Chapecoense’s plane crashed on the to the Copa Sudamericana final in Medellin, Colombia in late November.  Seventy-one people died in the crash, 19 of them players of the Brazillian team, who had risen from second-tier domestic football to a continental final within a short period.

CONMEBOL, the South American governing body, handed over the trophy to Chapeconse on Wednesday evening at the draw for the 2017 Copa Libertadores tournament.

Atletico Nacional, the Colombian club Chapecoense were billed to face in the two-legged Copa Sudamericana final agreed that the trophy should be given to the tragedy-stricken team.

New Chapecoense president Plínio David de Nes Filho, whose predecessor Sandro Pallaoro was killed in the crash, accepted the trophy on behalf of the club.

“I would like to thank everyone, all the nations. But let me, in a very special way, a very tender and grateful way, on behalf of our club, Chape, to share the trophy we just received with the one who gave us this possibility, with their gesture of humanity and respect. Of dignity and demonstration of kindness,” De Nes Filho said.

Chapecoense were included in the Copa Libertadores draw and will face Uruguay’s Nacional, Lanus of Argentina and Venezuela’s Zulia as part of Group 7 in the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.

Why I Retired Early from Football – Okocha

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha’, has revealed that his decision to retire early from active football, was due to lack of enough playing time.

Okocha made the shock decision to hang up his boots in 2008 at 34.

“I must confess that [not getting a lot of playing time] was one of the main reasons why I retired from playing at a very young age,” Okocha told media men at a press conference organised by Star Times.

“I believe that it is not worth it to train from Monday to Friday just to have 20 minutes on the pitch or sit on the bench on Saturday. I am very competitive.”

The midfielder who last represented Nigeria in 2006, made 75 appearances for the Eagles and scored 14 times.

FIFA boss wants video referees at 2018 World Cup

FIFA president Gianni Infantino hopes to see video referees used at the 2018 World Cup in Russia — if its teething problems have been fixed in time.

Colombia’s Atletico Nacional slammed the new video assistant referee (VAR) technology being trialled at the Club World Cup in Japan after the first-ever penalty awarded under the system helped knock them out midweek.

Real Madrid were also lukewarm after confusion around a Cristiano Ronaldo goal in another game, but Infantino promised FIFA would iron out the glitches.

“But I hope at the next World Cup the test results will be positive enough to be able to implement it.”

Infantino praised the decision to award Japan’s Kashima Antlers a penalty against the South American champions.

“The referee didn’t see the play and his non-decision could be corrected thanks to the video technology,” he said on the eve of the final between Real and Kashima.

“The time it took (to award the spot kick) lasted too long, that’s something we can work on.

“But the right decision was taken and the penalty awarded, which was correct.”

Chaos followed Ronaldo’s late goal in a 2-0 victory over Club America a day later, when it appeared video technology could have ruled out the effort.

Ronaldo’s celebrations were briefly cut short before the goal was confirmed.

Infantino blamed the confusion on the video assistant pressing the intercom while consulting colleagues, confusing the match referee.

“The Ronaldo goal was a communication issue,” said Infantino, who later confirmed that 12 national associations have signed up to trial the system.

– Unhappy fellow –
Real midfielder Luka Modric criticised the system after the game.

“I’m sure Modric will be happy next time, if he wins a match because of it,” said Infantino. “Even if it takes a few seconds to make the decision, the bottom line is the decisions were right.”

FIFA’s technical development chief Marco van Basten echoed his boss’s sentiments.

“It can only be better with VAR because there are more eyes,” said the former Dutch goal machine.

“Modric was a little bit confused like everybody was after Ronaldo’s goal,” he added.

“That happened unfortunately, but it probably won’t happen next time so I’m sure Mr Modric will be a happy fellow.”

Players have complained that it holds up play, with Nacional midfielder Mateus Uribe calling it “annoying.”

But Infantino hit back, arguing that players spend more time feigning injury than it takes video assistants to review footage.

“We don’t want the flow of the game interrupted but what is 30 seconds or one minute in a World Cup if you can win or lose a final because of a mistake by the referee?” he said.

“How much time do players waste in a match when they fall down?

“For over 50 years there has been discussion and FIFA has been criticised for refusing to use video assistance,” Infantino added.

“Now we have made history here in Japan. We are in a test phase and it needs to be fine-tuned but VAR can deliver minimum interference for maximum benefit.”

FIFA Again Gives Lazio More Time To Address Wage Dispute With Nigerian International Ogenyi Onazi

World football governing body, FIFA, has yet again given Italian Serie A club SS Lazio more time to respond to the wage dispute brought before it by Nigerian international Ogenyi Onazi.

The 23 year old midfileder left Lazio for Turkish side Trabzonspor in August but alleges the Italian club owe him two months wages before the transfer. Lazio however failed to respond to email, fax and telephone calls by Onazi’s representatives over the issue. This prompted the Super Eagles player to approach FIFA for dispute resolution.

Lazio was given until November 29 to respond to Onazi’s claims but the Italian side failed to do so and instead asked for a 20-day extension to FIFA’s deadline, claiming they are struggling to translate written letters from Italian to English even though such process should take only a few days.

In the latest twist, FIFA has again granted Lazio an extended time to state their case after club sent partially illegible documents to the football governing body. Lazio now has until 11th January 2017 to turn in all documents on the issue after which a decision shall be taken by FIFA.

Onazi spent five years at Lazio, scoring seven goals in 110 appearances before his transfer in August.

Remember this Afghan Boy? He is meeting Lionel Messi today. [VIDEO]

The five-year-old Afghan boy who captured hearts all over the world in his Lionel Messi ‘bag shirt’ has finally met his hero.

Young Murtaza Ahmadi was an online sensation in January when a picture of him wearing a plastic bag with ‘Messi’ scrawled on the back was circulated.

The Barcelona superstar sent a signed Argentina shirt to the child earlier this year, but has now gone a step further and met his biggest fan.

While in Doha for a money-spinning friendly with Barca against Al Ahli, Messi posed for a picture with the youngster.

“The image the world wanted to see,” tweeted Qatar’s World Cup organising committee. “The six-year-old boy who dreamed of meeting his hero, #Messi, finally comes true.”

Ahmadi was forced to flee the eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan in May, travelling to Pakistan.

Messi was denied a sixth Ballon d’Or title on Monday evening when great rival Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned with his fourth title.

NFF Denies Plan To Ban Falcons

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has debunked reports that it is set to ban some players and coaches of the Super Falcons, over their ongoing protest.

The Falcons have been on strike in Abuja after they won their 10th African Women Cup of Nations title, following the failure of the NFF to settle their outstanding bonuses and allowances.

Last week, reports made the rounds that about 10 of the players and some officals would be banned for life, for “ridiculing their fatherland before the international media”.

USA-based striker, Francisca Ordega, was specifically mentioned as one of the players to be banned, over alleged comment that she regretted playing for Nigeria. Orderga has since denied saying that .

“How can people cook up such a story? There is nothing of such,” NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, told The Guardian.

“They are our players and we will continue to appeal to them to see reason with the NFF in view of the tight economic situation we are currently. Their wages will be given to them as soon as we get money. To say that the NFF is planning to ban some of the players and coaches for life is out of it.”

Soccer: Pogba to face brother as Man United meet St Etienne.

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, could face his brother Florentin after Jose Mourinho’s side were drawn against St Etienne in the Europa League round of 32, a tie which will also stir memories of the dark days of hooliganism in the 1970s.

The sides met in the old European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977-78, but the first leg in St Etienne was marred by violence involving United supporters.

The English side were kicked out of the competition by UEFA but were reinstated on appeal and ordered to play their home leg outside Manchester, choosing to stage the game in Plymouth in south-west England.

They won the match 2-0 to go through 3-1 on aggregate.

Florentin Pogba, a Guinean international, is a defender for St Etienne although he has only been picked intermittently this season.

His brother Paul, who plays for France, joined United from Juventus in the close season for a world record fee.

Also, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Florentina, two of the most familiar names in European club football, will meet for the first time.

AS Roma, the only other Serie A team left in the competition after Inter Milan and Sassuolo failed to get past the group stage, are involved in another high-profile match against Spain’s Villarreal.

Israel’s Hapoel Beer Sheva, who beat Inter during the group stage, were rewarded with a tie against Besiktas, one of eight teams parachuting in from the Champions League.

Two of the other top ties pitted AZ Alkmaar against Olympique Lyonnais and PAOK against Schalke, a repeat of their Champions League playoff tie in 2013-14 which the Bundesliga side edged 4-3 on aggregate.

Enyimba to play home games in Calabar next season

Former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba, will now play their home fixtures in the new season in Calabar.

This new development was confirmed by the club’s chairman, Felix Anyansi-Agwu.

Enyimba have played their home matches in Umuahia and Port Harcourt last season, as the Enyimba International Stadium is under reconstruction.

“Playing in Calabar will help our preparations,” Anyasi-Agwu said.

“We have previously played in Calabar and we chose to return there because there is no premier league club based there, so Enyimba we will be the focus there.”

The Peoples Elephant will welcome Sunshine Stars on the opening day of the new season.

Rivers United Wins 2016 Super 4 Tournament

Rivers United have emerged winners of the 2016 Super Four Tournament, organized by the League Management Company (LMC) in Enugu.

The competition which began last Wednesday, featured all the teams that finished top four in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) last season.

The Port Harcourt club finished above champions Enugu Rangers with six points from three matches. Rangers came second with five points, while Wikki Tourists finished third with four points. IfeanyiUbah FC ended up in bottom place with just one point.

Rivers lost 2-0 to Rangers in their first fixture. They bounced back with a 1-0 victory over IfeanyiUbah and also defeated Wikki 1-0.

Enugu Rangers and Rivers United will play in the CAF Champions League, while IfeanyiUbah FC and Wikki Tourists will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Jose Mourinho Cancels Christmas for United Players, Staff

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has reportedly ordered his players to report for training at 4.30pm on Christmas Day and has also instructed staff to come to work.

In past seasons, United trained at Carrington on Christmas morning like other clubs, before spending the rest of the day with their families and friends.

Even Mourinho’s predecessor, Louis van Gaal, gave the players and staff the day off.

“Everyone is seriously pissed off. They’ve never heard anything like it – not even under Fergie,” a source told SunSports said.

“All the staff are used to coming in and sorting training out at Carrington but having it at Old Trafford adds a whole new level of organisation and brings more staff in.

“Jose’s had a face like thunder at the training ground for most of the season and is clearly not happy with results.

“Some staff will even have to stay later on to sort out the pitch and stadium for the next day’s home game. He’s effectively cancelled Christmas.”

United welcome Sunderland in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Bolivian aviation official reveals Chapecoense plane crash cover-up

While the air traffic control official warned that there would not be enough fuel to reach their destination, she had no authority to stop it before it crashed in Medellin

Celia Castedo, a Bolivian aviation official, has revealed that she was “harrased and pressured” into covering up the truth behind the Chapecoense airplane crash which killed 71 passengers and injured six others.

Ms Castedo told Bolivian media that she had previously warned that the plane did not have enough fuel to reach the intended destination in Medellin, Colombia, where Brazilian club Chapecoense were travelling to to face Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final.

The plane crashed into a mountainside near the city, with the pilot, Miguel Quiroga, claiming a “total electric failure” and “lack of fuel”.

Castedo, who was working in air traffic control, said that, instead of authorising the flight, she had tried to stop it but the authority was with Bolivia’s civil aviation agency, and has accused superiors of a cover-up.

In a letter, Castedo wrote: “I was subjected to harassment and pressure from my superiors […] who ordered me to change the content of the report which hours earlier [before the flight] I had presented.

“Based on a careful examination, I had made five observations, one of the most important of which referred to the fuel economy of the flight, which happened to be equal to the flight time.”

Chapecoense were later awarded the 2016 Copa Sudamericana title and, with it, a place in next season’s Copa Libertadores and Supercopa Euroamericana, while Atletico Nacional were rewarded with a fair-play award.

Bolivian authorities have arrested Gustavo Vargas, the chief of the airline involved in the crash, while Castedo is now reportedly seeking asylum in Brazil.

Iwobi Needs To Score More Goals – Ian Wright

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has advised Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi to step and improve on his goal sense and  score goals on a more regular basis.

Iwobi scored his first goal of the season for Arsenal in their 4-1 win against Basel in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match-day 6 tie.

The 20-year-old got Arsenal’s fourth after Lucas Perez had scored a hat-trick.

Last season, he scored two goals after breaking into Arsenal’s first team.

Speaking on BT Sport, Wright said: “That’s what I think he (Iwobi) needs more goals).

“I think he’s got everything and it’s good that Arsene Wenger eased him out of the team for a bit because he started to get a little bit stale with what he was doing.

“This goal [against Basel] will pep him up and he really did celebrate it with gusto.”

Mercy Akide-Udoh: My kids will never play for Nigeria

Former Super Falcons striker, Mercy Akide-Udoh, has said her children will never play for Nigeria, as long as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues to treat players poorly.

Akide-Udoh emerged the first ever African Women Footballer of the Year in 2001 and was named in the FIFA World All-Star in 2004.

The 41-year-old was reacting to the face-off between the current Falcons squad and the NFF over unpaid bonuses and allowances despite winning the 2016 African Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

“They fought with everything, so it should have been a happy ending. These kids have families, their parents are waiting for them to come back and put food on the table,” Akide-Udoh told BBC Sport.

“They’ve done their part and should be paid their money. I won’t be surprised if some of these kids don’t come back; opting to stay with their clubs rather than play for Nigeria.

“I am sorry, My kids are Americans, with the situation going on if something does not change my kids will never play for Nigeria. Who wants to suffer? We did it in our own time, this is a new generation, they should not be suffering what we suffered”, she added.
