US Police Kills Mentally Ill Unarmed Black Man

Police in the California city of San Diego shot and killed a mentally ill, unarmed black man after his sister called the department for assistance.

Police from the El Cajon suburb released a statement late Tuesday night, several hours after the shooting outside the Broadway Village Shopping Center, confirming that the man died in hospital. His family have named him as 30-year-old Alfred Olango.

Police had been called over by Olango’s sister, who said that he was acting strangely and not himself. The aftermath of the fatal shooting was filmed by a bystander who posted the clip live to Facebook. That video has been viewed almost 40,000 times.

“Why couldn’t you tase him? I told you he is sick. And you guys shot him!” Olango’s sister can be heard telling officers in the video. “I called police to help him, not to kill him.”

El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis said that the man was not armed. He added that Olango ignored calls to remove his hands from his pockets and pulled out an object out. Olango then pointed the object in a “shooting stance” toward two officers, prompting one of the officers to open fire, Davis said.

Deaf Driver Shot Dead By US Police During Traffic Stop

Authorities in the southern US state of North Carolina said Monday they are investigating the death of a deaf man who was fatally shot after a trooper tried to pull him over for speeding.

Daniel Harris, 29, who used sign language to communicate, led trooper Jermaine Saunders on an eight-mile (13-kilometer) chase on Thursday that started on an interstate highway and ended outside his home in Charlotte, local television station WSOC reported.

The driver exited his vehicle in the neighborhood and an “encounter took place” that led to a shot being fired, North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Michael Baker said in a statement.

The driver died at the scene, Baker said. No weapon was recovered from Harris, the State Bureau of Investigation told WSOC.

Saunders has been placed on administrative leave while investigators review evidence, including dashboard and body camera videos.

A neighbor called the shooting “totally unacceptable.”

“He didn’t even hear the siren, he didn’t hear anything… You’re pulling someone over who is deaf, they are handicapped,” Mark Barringer told WSOC.

Harris’s family has launched an online fundraiser to pay for funeral expenses.

Leftover money “will be used to set up a foundation in his name to educate and provide law enforcement proper training on how to confront Deaf people,” the family’s YouCaring.com fundraising page said.

They hoped to change drivers’ registration systems so that a “deaf” alert will show up when police look up a car’s license plate.

“With this change, Daniel will be a hero in our deaf community”.

Another Black Boy Shot by US Police (Watch Video)

A video was released on Wednesday showing the police officers involved in the killing of the 12-year-old African-American boy who was carrying a fake gun in Cleveland, Ohio.

Tamir Rice was shot by officers on Saturday and was rushed to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead on Sunday morning.

The officers involved said the boy refused to raise his hands and tried to pull the fake gun from his waistband outside the Cudell Recreation Center in Cleveland.

However, the video released by the state police on Wednesday clearly shows that one of the officers shot the boy seconds after he got out of the patrol car.

The video, containing stuttered images with no sound, shows the boy walking and pointing his fake gun in different directions. He then enters a gazebo before officers arrive in their patrol car. The first officer, Timothy Loehmann, gets out of the car and shoots the boy instantaneously.

Deputy Cleveland Police Chief Edward Tomba said the release of the video should not be regarded as a way to explain actions taken by the officers or the young man.

“This is not an effort to exonerate. It’s not an effort to show the public that anybody did anything wrong,” said Tomba. “This is an obvious tragic event where a young member of our community lost their life. We’ve got two officers that were out there protecting the public that just had to, you know, do something that nobody wants to do.”

The incident has sparked anger among the residents of the community. The US is already reeling from the aftershocks of a grand jury decision over the death of another black teenager in Missouri which sparked massive protests across the country over the past two days.
