Queen Elizabeth II marks sapphire jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest reigning sovereign, on Monday set a new record as the first British monarch to reach her sapphire jubilee, with 65 years on the throne.

The queen, now 90, rose to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25 upon the premature death of her father, King George VI.

As with previous milestones in her long reign, Queen Elizabeth is likely to spend Accession Day privately at her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, eastern England.

Despite her reluctance to celebrate publicly, the occasion will be marked in Britain.

At the Tower of London, in the capital’s Green Park and all around the kingdom, gun salutes will be fired in tribute.

Sapphire is the 65th anniversary gemstone and a photograph has been reissued of the sovereign wearing a suite of sapphire jewellery given to her by her father as a wedding gift in 1947.

The 2014 portrait by David Bailey shows her wearing the glittering necklace, dating from 1850 and made of 16 large oblong sapphires surrounded by diamonds.

“She has very kind eyes with a mischievous glint. I’ve always liked strong women, and she is a very strong woman,” the photographer said at the time.

– Coins, stamps and salutes –
The Royal Mint is marking the anniversary with specially-designed commemorative coins, ranging from a £5 coin to a £1,000 solid gold one-kilogram coin — which actually costs £50,000 to buy.

The £5 ($6.25, 5.80-euro) coins feature the imperial state crown, rotated to show off the Stuart sapphire.

They also bear words from the famous quote in her 21st birthday speech to the Commonwealth back in 1947: “My whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.”

Meanwhile the Royal Mail has issued a £5 stamp in a sapphire blue colour.

“It’s very, very difficult to dislike her,” Andrew Gimson, author of “Gimson’s Kings and Queens”, told AFP.

“She’s never answered back, she’s always been above politics.

“On the whole, our politicians are very unpopular” with ordinary citizens.

“They’d much prefer having this dutiful woman carrying out this role.”

– Victoria’s record eclipsed –
Queen Elizabeth became Britain’s longest-serving monarch ever in September 2015, surpassing the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, a record she said was “not one to which I have ever aspired”.

She also became the longest-reigning living monarch in the world in October last year following the death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Queen Elizabeth’s three big jubilees were the silver jubilee in 1977 — after 25 years — marked by street parties and a world tour; the 2002 golden jubilee — at 50 years — featuring a pop concert at Buckingham Palace; and the diamond jubilee in 2012 — for 60 years — which saw a river pageant on the Thames in London.

As head of the Commonwealth, she has also been the monarch of Australia, Canada and New Zealand for 65 years.

With her advancing age, Queen Elizabeth is gradually handing over more duties to younger members of the royal family.

Her 34-year-old grandson Prince William, who is second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, is stepping down as an air ambulance pilot this year to carry out more royal duties on his grandmother’s behalf.

Queen Elizabeth Narrowly Escapes Being Shot By Palace Security

In what would have been the most disastrous domestic accident of this century, a Security personnel at the Buckingham Palace, nearly shot Her Majesty, as she was mistook for one of the several intruders.

The Queen was said to be taking a stroll around the palace following insomnia, a sleep disorder, she suffered. Palace sources say, the queen occasionally takes a late-night stroll when suffering from insomnia. The sources however added that, she most times fails to let her security staff know.

Experts in the working of United Kingdom monarchical system say, such incidences are the experiences one gets, as a member of the archaic hereditary UK monarchy that you have armed guards watching over you at all hours.

But that apparently almost backfired for the Queen when she decided to take a late-night walk around the palace grounds and came close to being shot.

From time to time her majesty is said to struggle to sleep. During a spell of insomnia, the 90-year-old will occasionally put on her coat and go for a short stroll, an ex-guardsman told The Times.

Late one night, he said he was patrolling inside the perimeter of the Palace walls when he spotted a figure in the darkness.
Thinking that he had caught a potentially dangerous intruder, sneaking into the Royal residence at 3am, he shouted: “Who’s that?”

But to his surprise, it was actually the Queen.
“Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you,” he is reported to have said, on impulse.

Perhaps realizing this wasn’t the tone to be used when addressing the Queen, he told The Times he expected a telling off. But the Queen reportedly took responsibility for putting him in such an awkward position.

“That’s quite all right,” she replied. “Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”

It is believed the encounter happened at the Queen’s normal weekday residence, Buckingham Palace.

In 2013, Prince Andrew was also mistaken for an intruder and confronted by armed police as he walked in the vast gardens.
Police said no weapons were drawn but issued an apology to the prince, despite the palace having been subject to several real security breaches in recent years.

In August, a 22-year-old man was arrested just after 4am after climbing over a security fence. He was spotted by officers monitoring CCTV.

In May, Denis Hennessy, 41, climbed over barbed wire and roamed the palace grounds for  about 10 minutes while The Queen, Prince Philip, and Prince Andrew were in residence.
When he was found by officers he repeatedly asked them: “Is Ma’am in?”
Before that, in 2013, a man scaled the perimeter fence and was found at around 10pm actually inside the building, in one of the State Rooms. None of the royals were home at the time.
The news of the near-shooting comes at a time when the public is particularly tuned into the Queen’s wellbeing. The elderly monarch was not seen for a fortnight over the Christmas period due to poor health.
She missed a New Year’s Day church service at Sandringham because of a lingering heavy cold, and just a week before that she and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, were forced to delay their journey from Buckingham Palace to their Norfolk estate after she fell ill.

Queen Elizabeth To ‘Step Down’ From Royal Duties Dec 31

Queen Elizabeth II of England is to step down as patron of more than 20 national organisations at the end of this month, Buckingham Palace revealed yesterday.

The Queen, who celebrated her 90th birthday in April, will relinquish her association with the bodies – just as the Duke of Edinburgh broke formal ties with some of his patronages when he turned 90 in 2011.

The move is likely to be seen as a common-sense decision which acknowledges the Queen’s advancing years but Buckingham Palace stressed the monarch is still patron of more than 600 organisations.

The patronages will be taken on by members of the Royal Family and organisations involved include Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Barnardo’s, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Association.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “At the end of the Queen’s 90th birthday year, Her Majesty will step down as patron from a number of national organisations. The patronages will be passed on to other members of the Royal Family in the coming months.”

Queen Elizabeth Begins Commonwealth Summit With Climate Focus

Queen Elizabeth II opened the 2015 Commonwealth summit on Friday with a colourful ceremony attended by world leaders gathered for pressing talks on climate change.

The Queen dressed in an aqua blue coat with pink flowers adorning her trademark hat, was serenaded by a harp as she arrived to a red-carpet welcome at a huge sandstone conference centre on the seafront in the Maltese capital Valletta.

As the clock ticks to a UN climate conference in Paris starting Monday, leaders at the summit including France’s Francois Hollande, Britain’s David Cameron and the UN’s Ban Ki-moon will try to open the door to a landmark accord for limiting greenhouse gases.

“At this meeting, the Commonwealth will be charged with demonstrating leadership, often in practical ways, on an agenda of global issues,” Queen Elizabeth said in her opening address on the Mediterranean island.

“I wish you every success in this endeavour.”

Queen Elizabeth Celebrates Record Reign With New Photo

Queen Elizabeth II, on September 9, beats the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, 63 years and seven months.

In honor of this momentous occasion, Buckingham Palace has released a commemorative photo of the Queen. The picture, which was taken in July by Mary McCartney (the daughter of Paul McCartney and the late Linda McCartney), shows the Queen seated at her desk in her private audience room at Buckingham Palace with one of her official red boxes.

Queen Elizabeth Upset With Kate Middleton Over Wardrobe Malfunction?

Queen Elizabeth is upset with Kate Middleton over a wardrobe malfunction, according to new reports.

Kate recently appeared in public for the first time in over a month to welcome the president of Singapore to the United Kingdom. While outside with her husband Prince William waiting for the president and his wife, Kate’s dress was caught by the wind and hitched up a bit.

Pictures show a glimpse of Kate’s underwear.

Reports suggest that Queen Elizabeth is upset over the malfunction, although it’s unclear what the origin of the reports are.

“British tabloids are reporting that an anonymous source claims both the Queen and Camilla Parker-Bowles spoke with Kate afterward about being more careful in her wardrobe selections,” reported The Hollywood Gossip.

And gossip website Celeb Dirty Laundry said that “it’s not shocking to hear that neither Queen Elizabeth nor Camilla Parker-Bowles are happy about Kate’s billionth wardrobe malfunction” without citing a source.

“The Queen is probably furious, Camilla is probably running around and [complaining] about Kate to everyone who will listen, and Kate is once again in the hot seat for all the wrong reasons,” it added.

While it’s not confirmed that the latest malfunction–which was not nearly as bad as some of the previous ones–upset the queen, she has voiced displeasure with Kate’s wardrobe in the past.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this year that Kate would start wearing longer dressed than she had previously favored, in a makeover supported by the Queen.
