PDP National Caucus Endorses Move To Reconcile Members

The extended national caucus of  PDP has endorsed the peace move by the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee to reconcile with the disputed National Chairman of the party, Alhaji  Ali Modu Sheriff and his faction.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen after the party’s caucus meeting.

Adeyeye said that the purpose of the meeting was to brief the caucus on the move and get its endorsement.

The caucus is made up of PDP governors, National Assembly caucus, Board of Trustees and other stakeholders.

“Members of the caretaker committee are not there on their own, they were appointed by the party and they have to carry the party along in all they are doing.

“The peace move has been finally endorsed and supported by members of caucus without any dissent voice,” he said.

Adeyeye, however, said there were no factions in the party but aggrieved members.

“We don’t have factions in PDP. There are some of our members who are aggrieved.

“We are making moves to ensure peace in the party,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls  that Makarfi and Sheriff in September expressed determination to settle the party leadership crisis.

The peace committee is expected to be inaugurated on Monday to reunite the party.

PIB: NNPC Concerned Over Move By Petroleum Ministry To Assume Control Of Proposed IJVs

The attempt by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to assume control over the proposed Incorporated Joint Ventures (IJVs) and the Asset Management Company to be created by the new Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) may set the ministry on a collision course with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), investigations have revealed.

The original PIB submitted to the National Assembly by the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua administration had provided for the corporatisation of the oil joint venture (JVs) assets held by NNPC and the international oil companies (IOCs) into IJVs.

But the IOCs had opposed the establishment of the IJVs following concerns that the NNPC, which controls majority stake in the existing joint venture oil assets, might insist on operating the incorporated entities.

As a result, the IJVs were removed from the revised reform bill resubmitted by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 to the National Assembly.

However, the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has unbundled the PIB into three legislations for easy passage and also reintroduced the IJVs in the revised bill to resolve the cash call challenged hampering the existing JVs, which have accumulated to unpaid arrears of over $6 billion.

It was also gathered that splitting the PIB was done to ensure that regulatory and fiscal issues are dealt with separately.

The Ministry of Petroleum, it was learnt from a top NNPC source, is in the final stages of completing the comprehensive executive drafts of the split PIB.

It was also gathered that the first of the three pieces of legislation under the revised PIB being prepared by the executive arm of government is called the “Governance PIB”, while the version drafted by the Senate is called the “Petroleum Industry Governance Bill, 2016”.

Investigations have, however, revealed that the NNPC is not happy with the attempt by the Ministry of Petroleum to take over direct control of the proposed IJVs, Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) and the Asset Management Company.

PDP Leaders Move To Begin Peace Talks With Sheriff

In the aftermath of the botched convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Port Harcourt, leaders of the party have again initiated moves to reconcile with its former chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, who has continued to lay claims to the leadership of the party, despite court ruling declaring him a usurper.

It was gathered in Abuja, yesterday, that two governors of the party and the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT, have met with Senator Sheriff after the convention to bring him on board in a one united party.

A former member of the House of Representatives and staunch supporter of Senator Sheriff, who craved anonymity, said that at separate meetings with the governors and the Board of Trustees chairman, Senator Sheriff reiterated his demands which, among others, include the dissolution of the Makarfi-led caretaker committee and the composition of a new committee made up of his nominees and others to conduct a fresh convention for the party.

The member said: “The governors came begging and Senator Sheriff reiterated his earlier demands. Having come this far in trying to salvage the party, we cannot afford to hand over the party to the governors so that they can continue with their impunity.

“What happened at the so-called convention in Port Harcourt has vindicated Sheriff’s position that the governors have not learned anything from the results of the 2015 election.

“Sheriff is out to salvage the party and return it to its owners who are the masses. Nigerians should commend Sheriff for standing up to the shenanigans of the governors.”

Tambuwal, Osinbajo’s Wives Move To Improve Children, Woman’s Welfare

In an effort to improve the well-being of Sokoto women and children by ensuring access to education and health opportunities, wife of the Sokoto Governor, Hajiya Maria Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Thursday visited the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

The meeting was designed to help Sokoto state become the champions of change on issues like women’s health, girl-child education, improving child mortality, and boosting women’s economic empowerment.

In her remarks, Mrs Tambuwal said the state government is mapping out modalities to increase the number of women entrepreneurs so they can build themselves and help their families and communities at large.

This, according to her, becomes imperative because it will reduce poverty rate across the state.
She said women in Sokoto are receptive to new ideas, and have in the past shown the need to work with the authorities and development agencies to improve their lots and seek a better future for their children.

“We need the support of the Federal Government in that regard,” she added.

Responding, Mrs Osinbajo appreciated the fact that Mrs Tambuwal had come with a clear agenda to tackle the problems of girls education and women empowerment.

APC Senators Frustrate Move To Summon Buhari Over Fuel Scarcity

Efforts by senators of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to convince the Senate to summon President Muhammadu Buhari to give reasons for the ongoing fuel scarcity in the country, were frustrated, yesterday, by their counterparts in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The PDP senators, who berated the President’s handling of current economic situation in the country, insisted that he be made to a appear before the Senate to give explanations on the cause of the fuel scarcity and how he intended to solve the issue as Minister of Petroleum.

Their frustrated efforts came following a motion, tagged: “The current fuel scarcity all around the country and the need to urgently resolve the crisis,” sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North and 23 other senators, which was debated upon.

Speaking through Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia South, the opposition senators accused the President of mismanaging the country’s oil sector, causing untold hardship for Nigerians, barely six months after being in the saddle as president.

But the Senate, in a reaction to the development, said the President could not be summoned even as Minister of Petroleum.

The red chamber, reacting through its chairman on Media and Publicity, Aliyu Sabi, insisted that the fact that the President was overseeing the Petroleum ministry as a substantive minister, did not make him to be easily summoned like other ministers.

Abaribe had, while contributing to the motion, urged the Senate to summon President Buhari to explain why the Federal Government was yet to find solutions to the continued fuel problem in spite of its claim that the refineries in the country were working.

He said the unnecessary hardship occasioned by the scarcity could only be resolved if lawmakers were adequately briefed on the true state of affairs. Senator Abaribe‘s submission received wide support from other PDP senators, as they all hailed him.

Senator Abaribe supported his call with a prayer for adoption but it was defeated when the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, put it up for a voice vote.

At this point, the APC Senators, who were more in number, defeated their PDP colleagues with overwhelming shout of “yes” against the PDP’s “nay.”

100,000 Ink UK Petition To Move Transgender Woman Out Of Male Jail

More than 100,000 people had by Thursday signed an online petition demanding the UK prison authorities move a transgender woman out of an all-male prison on grounds of safety.

According to the petition on change.org, 26-year-old Tara Hudson, who is serving a 12-week sentence for assault in a bar fight, has lived her entire adult life as a woman.

The petition says the Bristol prison where Hudson is being held is a particularly violent one and that she faced “extreme danger of abuse, sexual violence, and even death”.

“People like Tara Hudson are still paying a high price at the hands of an outdated and outmoded judicial system, simply for being who they are,” it said, asking that she be moved to a women’s prison.

Hudson has undergone six years of reconstructive surgery and is considered a woman by her doctor but is still awaiting final reassignment surgery and does not have formal recognition of the change.

A prison service spokesman said offenders were placed “according to their legally-recognized gender”.

“However, our guidelines allow room for discretion and in such cases, medical experts will review the circumstances in order to protect the emotional wellbeing of the person concerned,” he said.

PDP Divided Over North-East’s Move To Fill Mu’azu’s Vacancy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is divided over agitation by top politicians in the North-east to fill the vacancy created by Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, a former national chairman of the party.

Mu’azu resigned on May 20, following pressure that he led the party to a humiliating defeat in the last general elections when his tenure had not expired.

According to the provisions of PDP constitution, he was supposed to be replaced by someone from the North-east.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the 67th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, PDP national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh said the party leaders had divergent views on the issue, stressing that the NWC would liaise with the party leadership in the North-east to re-consider the issue.

“The NEC did not discuss the issue of Mu’azu’s replacement but there is a kind of subtle understanding that the NWC will work with the North-east in that regard. Some members raised the issue but others did not key into it same way,” he said.

Govs Move To Access $500m World Bank Funds

Nigeria Governors Forum has begun steps to access $500 million dollars from the World Bank to improve infrastructure and other development activities in the 36 states of the federation.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar disclosed this yesterday after receiving briefing alongside other governors from some international and local agencies on the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, at the State House, Abuja.

According to him, the governors received assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, that it was fully ready to fund the country’s economy through efficient delivery of its mandate.

“There are funds from the World Bank which states cannot access because we don’t know how to move forward as a result of lack of expertise. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health briefed us on how we can access the $500 million in that area.

“Second, we used to complain of the NNPC, but with the facts we have got today, it is different in the sense that the NNPC is going to be a different organisation. It is going to fund the economy fully in the sense that there won’t be any question of pipeline breaking or stealing of oil. We have taken care of that Instead of using the military only, why don’t we use technology to safeguard our pipelines?” he said.

PDP Supports PMB’s Anti-Corruption Move, Warns Against Victimization

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supported the anti-corruption war by President Muhammadu Buhari, noting however, that the war should not be blind to the impunity of the present leaders of the country in terms of borrowing and spending without recourse to the statutory organs of government.

The party also insisted on due process in order to ensure that it is not used as a guise to victimize innocent citizens and curtail the freedom of Nigerians.

The PDP in a statement issued by its national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, said the clarification has become necessary to remove any misconception that it is against the decision of the present administration to probe some past officials of government because they are PDP members.

“The PDP supports the decision of the federal government to fight corruption in our country. However, we make bold to state that it should not be used as a guise to victimise innocent citizens”.

“Democracy has come to stay in Nigeria and no citizen, irrespective of political, religious or ethnic affiliation should be denied access to due process and the rule of law in the process.”
