20 APC Senators Set to join PDP – Akpabio

The Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio says about 20 serving senators of the ruling APC have perfected plans to join the PDP once the leadership crisis in the opposition party is resolved.

Speaking at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP held yesterday at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Akpabio, who did not give names of the senators, regretted the leadership crisis bedevilling the party, which he said was responsible for the loss of Edo and Ondo states governorship elections.

“As I speak, so many senators from the ruling party are eager to join PDP. All they want is return of peace to the party. Once that is done I can assure you that 20 senators are on their way to joining the PDP,” he said.

Also, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said those who left PDP for the APC in the South- East have no electoral value, saying they only defected to look for contracts and employment opportunities.

“We should allow them get the contract they are looking for, to get employment they are looking for. At the appropriate time we would know who is who in the South -East. There is nothing to worry about, we are completely in control,” he said.

Thirty-nine All Progressives Congress Senators signed the letter demanding the replacement of Ali Ndume with Ahmed Lawan as the Senate Leader, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

The ruling party has 63 members in the 109-member Senate.

The letter – with list of those who appended their signatures – was captured in the Senate’s votes and proceedings of Tuesday, approved on Wednesday.

The letter titled ‘Notice of Vote of No Confidence/Change of Leadership’ was read by Senate President Bukola Saraki shortly before the Senate adjourned on Tuesday.

Mr. Ndume, who said he was removed because his disagreement with Mr. Saraki over the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said the letter sacking him was read while he was out of the chamber to observe afternoon prayer.

The Borno lawmaker has since accepted his exit and thanked his colleagues for giving him the opportunity to lead them.

The ruling APC has also commended Mr. Ndume while supporting the emergence of Mr. Lawan.

On Wednesday, Senate President Bukola Saraki told reporters after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari that there was no crisis in the Senate despite Mr. Ndume’s removal.

“Everything is calm, solid and fine,” he said.

APC Senators Frustrate Move To Summon Buhari Over Fuel Scarcity

Efforts by senators of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to convince the Senate to summon President Muhammadu Buhari to give reasons for the ongoing fuel scarcity in the country, were frustrated, yesterday, by their counterparts in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The PDP senators, who berated the President’s handling of current economic situation in the country, insisted that he be made to a appear before the Senate to give explanations on the cause of the fuel scarcity and how he intended to solve the issue as Minister of Petroleum.

Their frustrated efforts came following a motion, tagged: “The current fuel scarcity all around the country and the need to urgently resolve the crisis,” sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North and 23 other senators, which was debated upon.

Speaking through Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia South, the opposition senators accused the President of mismanaging the country’s oil sector, causing untold hardship for Nigerians, barely six months after being in the saddle as president.

But the Senate, in a reaction to the development, said the President could not be summoned even as Minister of Petroleum.

The red chamber, reacting through its chairman on Media and Publicity, Aliyu Sabi, insisted that the fact that the President was overseeing the Petroleum ministry as a substantive minister, did not make him to be easily summoned like other ministers.

Abaribe had, while contributing to the motion, urged the Senate to summon President Buhari to explain why the Federal Government was yet to find solutions to the continued fuel problem in spite of its claim that the refineries in the country were working.

He said the unnecessary hardship occasioned by the scarcity could only be resolved if lawmakers were adequately briefed on the true state of affairs. Senator Abaribe‘s submission received wide support from other PDP senators, as they all hailed him.

Senator Abaribe supported his call with a prayer for adoption but it was defeated when the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, put it up for a voice vote.

At this point, the APC Senators, who were more in number, defeated their PDP colleagues with overwhelming shout of “yes” against the PDP’s “nay.”

Melaye Blames Absentee APC Senators For Ekweremadu’s Win

The Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has said that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ike Ekweremadu, emerged Deputy Senate President because some APC senators did not attend the inauguration.

Mr. Melaye, an APC member who supported the candidacy of Bukola Saraki for Senate President as opposed to the All Progressives Congress’ choice of Ahmed Lawan, made the comment while briefing the press at the Senate on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mr. Melaye said if all APC senators were present at the inauguration, they would have voted for the APC contestant, Ali Ndume.

“Those who made APC to lose the Deputy Senate Presidency yesterday are those who stayed away from the Chamber,” he said, referring to pro-Lawan lawmakers who say they missed the session to meet President Muhammadu Buhari.

“If they had come, we would have won.

“For you to know that we stood by our party, we nominated Ali Ndume. We who were in the chambers as at the time of the election were 20 APC members and we voted for Ndume as at that time,” he said.

APC Senators May Dump Zoning Of Senate Presidency

Senators elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) may dump the zoning arrangement of the party in the selection of the next Senate President.

The senators have vowed to go against the party’s wish if the zoning arrangement will not guarantee fairness and justice.

Senator Ahmad Sani, Senate Deputy Minority Leader, who spoke on behalf of some senators, stated that if the party does not zone the seat correctly, the senators may defy it and vote the right candidate.

He stated that the senators have the right to vote for the best candidate that they think will lead them more properly and more efficiently.

He noted that National Assembly was now made up of more independent minded individuals who hold national interests above that of the party.
