Singer Madonna wins permission to adopt two children from Malawi

Madonna has been granted permission to adopt two more children from Malawi after the High Court in the impoverished southern African country gave its approval.

The U.S. singer’s previous adoptions stirred anger among some Malawians who accused the government of allowing the pop star to skirt laws that ban non-residents from adopting children.

Madonna was inside the courtroom when the approval ruling was delivered, Mlenga Mvula, a spokesman for Malawi’s judiciary said on Tuesday.

“Today the High Court made a ruling that she should go ahead and adopt the two children,” Mvula told Reuters, adding that the singer was smiling after the court’s ruling.

Mvula could not provide details on the children Madonna will adopting, saying it was against the law to divulge such particulars at this stage.

“Within a year she should provide us with a home survey report which the court has ordered her to provide,” Mvula said, referring to one of the conditions of the adoption.

Madonna, 58, adopted Malawian children David Banda and Mercy James in 2006 and 2009. The mega-selling pop singer has two other children, Lourdes and Rocco, from previous relationships.

Madonna had denied reports that she wanted to adopt again after she visited Malawi last month, at the time saying her trip was for her charity work.

Madonna established the non-profit Raising Malawi in 2006 to provide health and education programs, particularly for girls, in the southeast African country.

Madonna in Malawi court to apply to adopt 2 more kids

US pop superstar Madonna appeared in person at a court in the Malawian capital Lilongwe on Wednesday to apply to adopt two more local children, a court spokesman told AFP.

Madonna, who runs a charity called Raising Malawi in the southern African nation, adopted Malawian children David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009.

Local media reports said the singer appeared before Justice Fiona Mwale amid tight security, accompanied by two unidentified children and several other people, before being driven away in an SUV vehicle.

“The court is looking at the application now to determine whether Madonna can adopt these two children,” said Mlenga Mvula, spokesman of the Lilongwe High Court.

“The… process requires the court to make a ruling on the adoption.”

The 58-year-old singer last visited Malawi in July, taking her two adopted Malawian children with her.

She also inspected her charity’s work, including progress at a surgical unit for children at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre.

It was Madonna’s first visit in nearly two years to Malawi, where she has at times been embroiled in controversy after her earlier adoptions.

– Adoption controversy –
She was stripped of VIP status by former president Joyce Banda’s government in 2013 and accused of being “uncouth” and wanting eternal gratitude from the impoverished country for adopting the two children.

But Banda was ousted in 2014 elections and the new president, Peter Mutharika, moved to repair relations, saying “my government has always been grateful for the passion Madonna has for this country”.

Last July, Madonna said she would not revive plans for a $15 million academy for girls in Malawi, which was cancelled amid allegations of mismanagement — leading to her tiff with Banda.

The singer, who divorced film director Guy Ritchie in 2008, reportedly landed in Malawi by private jet and was staying at a exclusive lodge outside Lilongwe.

Madonna, who has four children, is reportedly among the biggest individual donors to children’s projects such as orphanages in Malawi, which is ranked by the UN Human Development Index as one of the world’s 20 least developed countries.

On Saturday, she made an unannounced appearance in Washington at a rally protesting against US President Donald Trump a day after his inauguration.

Madonna had campaigned for Hillary Clinton to become America’s first woman president, and told Billboard Magazine after the Democrat’s loss that women had a “tribal inability” to accept a female president.

Madonna defends ‘blowing up the White House’ remark

Madonna’s speech, which was criticised on social media, led some television networks to abruptly stop their live feeds of the march.

The march drew hundreds of thousands of people in demonstrations across the U.S. to protest the election of Donald Trump as president.

“I am not a violent person,’’ the singer songwriter said on Instagram.

“I spoke in metaphor and I shared two ways of looking at things — one was to be hopeful, and one was to feel anger and outrage, which I have personally felt.’’

The 58-year-old led the crowd on Saturday in chants of, “Yes, we’re ready’’ to take on policies promoted by Trump, who alienated many women during the election campaign.

He had made comments about rivals’ attractiveness and promised to outlaw or diminish abortion rights.

Trump’s comments in a decade-old video declaring that women would allow him, as a celebrity, to kiss and grope them without their consent further outraged many women.

But Madonna preceded the chants with coarse words for critics of the march.

“To our detractors that insist that this march will never add up to anything, fuck you,’’ the pop star said.

She then repeated the expletive.

Her words drew immediate criticism on social media.

On YouTube, where the speech was posted live and in recorded formats several users called the singer “evil.’’

Others expressed outrage over her comment that she had thought about blowing up the White House. On Twitter, some users demanded that she be investigated for making terrorist threats.

Turnout for Saturday’s march was unprecedented, as organisers took credit for mobilising five million marchers worldwide.

Official crowd estimates for the Washington centerpiece of the demonstration were not available, but turnout in the nation’s capital clearly exceeded the 200,000 projected in advance by organisers.

The march filled long stretches of downtown Washington around the White House and the National Mall.

Guy Ritchie & Madonna Finally Settle Bitter Custody Battle Over Son Rocco

Guy Ritchie and Madonna have settled their bitter custody battle over where their son Rocco should live. The custody disagreement began in December 2015 during a falling out between Rocco and his musician mother when he abandoned her Rebel Hearts tour, heading to London to live with his father and his wife Jacqui and refused to return to America to start the school term in January.

This triggered a legal battle between his parents, especially when the teenager ignored a court order to fly back from Ritchie’s London home to live with Madonna in New York. They have fought constantly over child-rearing issues as Madonna was the disciplinarian and felt Guy was way too permissive.

The 47-year-old director has now reached a settlement with the pop star, 58, hours before they were due in court in New York on Wednesday. Although the terms of their agreement remain confidential, it was revealed that Rocco will be schooled in London, with regular visits from his mother, whom he reconciled with some months ago.
Speaking outside the court Guy’s lawyer, Peter Bronstein, said that the 16-year-old-year-old would continue to live with his father in London. Everyone’s agreed to that and there’s no further need for any kind of a court case.’
A Court spokesman confirmed Madonna and Guy reached a settlement. Madonna’s attorney however declined to comment on the matter.

“Don’t Go To Awards Shows Looking For Justice,” – Madonna To Kanye.

Exhibit A: The 2015 Grammys, where the “Only One” rapper, 37, caused a stir by following Beck on stage after the Album of the Year announcement and then saying later that the Morning Phase rocker should have given his award to Beyonce, who was also nominated in the category.

“Don’t go to awards shows looking for justice,” Madge advised West, who worked with the singer on several tracks for the new album, including the provocative, celeb-name-dropping “Illuminati.” “That’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Just go and have fun. I never got too engaged with who wins awards or not, because I don’t honestly think it’s that important.

See Video! Madonna’s Epic Fall At The BRIT Awards 2015!

Madonna ended up putting on a performance that was memorable for all the wrong reasons, when she was pulled off the stage backwards as she closed out Wednesday night’s BRIT Awards 2015.

With the final, much-anticipated performance of the night singing Living For Love, Madonna failed to untie her cape in time for her dancers to rip it away as she took to the stage at London’s 02 Arena.

The 56-year-old looked shocked – and briefly stopped singing – after she fell down a set of stairs, but picked herself back up and continued to the end.
