Lagos State Govt. Commences Road Reconstruction In 40-Year-Old Gowon Estate

The Lagos State Government has commenced road reconstruction in Gowon Estate, a Federal Housing Estate built about 40 years ago in Egbeda, Ipaja area of the state.

The residents say it is the first of its kind as successive governments in the state had not remembered that some tax payers live there.

The rehabilitation, which started early this month, is being carried out through the Alimosho Local Government/Mosan Okunola Local Government Council Development Areas.

The work which has a 16-week completion schedule, is being carried out on one of the estate’s major access roads, 41 Road. The kerbs, this is, the concrete pavement and the coal tar have been excavated.

The Chairman, Community Development Association (CDA) of the Estate, Mr Nathaniel Okoro, told NAN that the residents were happy that for first time, the state government remembered those who pay taxes into its coffers.

An apparently joyful Okoro expressed the hope that it was the beginning of the good things to come to the estate from the government after about 40 years it was constructed.

“We want to believe this is the beginning of good things to come because there are so many other roads that are bad in this estate.

“While we express our joy for the reconstruction of 41 Road, we pray that other roads will receive due attention. These are 4th and 5th Avenues, 3rd, 411, 401 and 1st Avenue,’’ Okoro said.

The CDA chairman noted that the community was not informed of the specification or scope of the work to be done by the contractors, Wetland Construction Nigeria Ltd.

“This will make it difficult for the community to check whether the work is according to specification or not.

“Secondly, we don’t know if there will be walkways, because if there will be, the contractors will need the community’s co-operation to inform those who had built shops around the road to shift backwards.

“They could also be asked to remove them from the sides of the road so that they will do their work.

“We don’t know what plans they have for the median, whether there will be beautification; if there will be beautification, there will be need to tell the residents not to setup businesses on it.

A top official at the Engineering Department of the Council, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the drainage ?systems in the area were already being worked on.

The official said the drainage system in the estate was underground and that was why the ongoing work was not noticeable.

According to the official, the drainage must first be cleared before the actual reconstruction can commence.

The official decried the extent to which the drainage system was ?blocked with disused tyres and other non-biodegradable refuse by the residents.

“It is so bad and unfortunate for some residents to turn the drainage system into refuse dump; our men have been working underground for some weeks clearing the refuse.

“If the refuse is not cleared and the drainage system properly ?opened, the reconstruction cannot commence.

“The recent rainfall testifies to the fact that the drainage has been worked ?on as there was no flood in the area, unlike when the drainage was blocked,’’ the official said.

He also said ?that the laying of concrete kerbs to divide the road verges and create walkways was also ongoing.

“Our men have also started scrapping the bad portions of the ?road because we are embarking on construction of new roads and not repair.

“The existing drainage system will be repaired and maintained,’’ the official said.

According to him, the council was constructing only the 41 Road in the estate ?and Street lights will be provided at the end of the construction.

“It is important to note that Gowon Estate is ?Federal Government-owned but the state government in collaboration with the local government has been magnanimous to repair a portion of it.’’

The official said the decision to repair only 41 Road was in line with the state government’s directive that the local government councils choose two roads within their jurisdiction for reconstruction.

“The council chose Remi Ogunjimi at Okunola and 41 Road in Gowon Estate; others may be done later.

“Work at Remi Ogunjimi seems fast because there are no underground drainages ?being worked on, but the repair of the drainage system in Gowon Estate makes the work seemingly slow.

“But it is not in actual sense, a lot of work is ongoing’’ the official said.

According to the official, the council is working assiduously with the site engineers to ensure that the reconstruction is completed within the 16 weeks stipulated on the project’s bill board.

This was confirmed on the official website of the Governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode.

On Monday, Governor Ambode, who spoke at the Lagos House in Ikeja while receiving senior management staff of Barcelona, said he was delighted with the development, as it was in sync with his administration’s philosophy for sports development.

The Governor, who described the development as an historic moment for the state, said it was indeed a thing of joy coming at a time when the state was still basking in the euphoria of the successful hosting of the Lagos City Marathon.

“This visit by FC Barcelona is coming at a point where I believe strongly that we have nothing else to say than to say we are committed into this partnership because we know the partnership will give us the first FCBEscola in Africa,” Ambode said. “I was made to understand that this is the first of its kind in Africa and so Lagos is priding itself as a major receptor of the next academy to be established in Africa.

“I know that this will create a very good platform for youth development, grassroots empowerment and also for the value of sportsmanship. We share the same values with FC Barcelona which are respect, courage, humility, social integration and community service.

“So, I just want to say that you have our blessing; you have our go ahead. Whatever it is that we need to do to ensure that this project take off as quick as possible as a government, we are hundred percent ready to support you in the interest of all of us.

“I believe so much that sports, entertainment and arts can actually contribute together to lift Lagos and Nigeria away from the problem of unemployment and that is why this government will continue to support sports in its ramifications and ensure that we take our youth off the street and make them productively engaged.”

According to Pau Vilanova i Vila-Abadal, Director of Business and Member of FC Barcelona Management Board, who led the team to the State House, thanked Governor Ambode for the support given to them so far in actualizing the project.

He said FC Barcelona decided to establish their Academy in Lagos due to the impressive population of the state, and the opportunity to share the philosophy of the team with the state.

On his part, Oscar Grau, Worldwide Director of Barcelona Academy, said it was indeed a big honour for the club to establish its Academy in Lagos, as many of the big names in the team started from such Academy.

He said players like Messi, Iniesta, Sergio Busquet, Pique, among others, all started from such Academy, and that the club has a unique methodology of instilling great virtues in footballers, apart from footballing skills and education.

He added that through the Academy, the club also aims to raise excellent players for Nigeria, and that the core values of the club included efforts, team work, humility and respect.

Also speaking, NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, congratulated Governor Ambode over the successful hosting of the Lagos International Marathon, saying it was one of the most successful tournaments in the world.

We’ll Innovate, Build On Last Marathon’s Lapses In Future Hosting – Tinubu

The Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commissioner, Deji Tinubu, said on Sunday that the state would build on the lapses of the last Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in hosting future editions.

Apart from building on the lapses, there will be innovations that will involve more people of the state in the race, Tinubu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, while reviewing developments at the maiden marathon staged by Lagos State.

He said that the lessons from it would make for a better hosting as the race had become a yearly competition.

“First of all, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, has confirmed that the race an annul competition, and we are already excited about hosting the 2017 edition because 2016 showed us more that we can build upon.

“We had lapses in some places and there were some incidents that we did not envisage, all those things will get us fully prepared.

“Another thing is that it opened our eyes to many other things that we can incorporate into the marathon, so, we are quite excited about the next year’s competition.

“There are lot of things we have already listed for next year’s competition which will involve the people of Lagos more,’’ he said.

Tinubu disclosed that the last marathon was hugely successful in spite of the lapses owing to the large turnout of marathoners for the
competition.

“We are delighted that over 20, 000 people came out to run which is amazing; also we are delighted that people lined up the streets to cheer the marathoners.

“From this feat, we want to go to the next stage where all these people would be in one way or the other involved in the next marathon.

“I will not like to disclose other things this early, but there are a lot of things that will involve more people of Lagos in the race,’’ he said.

Lagos State Govt. To Commence 2016 Immunisation Campaign Tomorrow

The Lagos State Government said it would commence the 2016 Measles Follow-Up Campaign on Thursday, Jan. 28, to run through Monday, Feb. 1.

Dr Jide Idris, the Commissioner for Health, stated this on Tuesday in Lagos during a media briefing. He said that healthcare providers at all levels had been trained to ensure the success of this year’s campaign. Idris said that the measles campaign would last for five days in wards and communities.

“We have mounted 521 fixed posts in health facilities and 2, 216 temporary posts in public/ private schools, churches, mosques, town halls, bus stops, motor parks and markets, where immunisation will be provided.

I appeal to parents and caregivers to ensure that their children between ages nine months up to five years are taken to the health posts for the vaccination.

The service is free; the vaccine is safe and effective and is to be administered to children irrespective of their previous immunisation status.

Though the duration of immunity conferred by measles antigen is lifelong and it is 85 per cent efficient,” he said. Idris explained that measles was one of the six childhood killer diseases that could be prevented via complete and effective vaccination.

“Children do not need to die from vaccine preventable diseases such as tuberculosis, pertussis, tatanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis and yellow fever. Every child is expected to complete the routine immunisation schedule before the age of one to boost the immunity of the child against killer infections.

“The symptoms of measles infection include fever, running nose, sneezing, ulcer of the mouth, skin rashes that starts from the head and spreads to other parts of the body.

Complication of measles infection is swelling of the brain tissues, ear and chest infection, blindness and even death.

It is therefore, crucial for us to prevent children from this deadly disease by ensuring they receive a dose of measles immunisation during this campaign period,” Idris said.

Environmental Health Officers Kill 4,400 Rats In 6 Markets In Lagos State

The Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Lagos State Chapter, on Monday said that it had killed no fewer than 4,400 rats at six major markets in the state under its de-rat market programme.

Its president, Mr Samuel Akingbehin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that his association carried out the exercise at Onigongbo, Oshodi , Oke-Odo,Ikotun Idanwo, Ojuwoye and Mile 12 Markets. He said that de-rating the markets was part of the association’s efforts to curb the spread of Lassa fever in the state.

“The exercise is strategic in our effort toward the prevention of communicable diseases,’’ he said.

NAN reports that this was part of efforts by the public and relevant agencies to de-rat markets that were the causes of the Lassa Fever that had broken out in many states.

The disease, since its outbreak, had killed no fewer than 76 of its victims and over 200 cases across 17 out of the 36 states are quarantined and under observations.

Akingbehin appealed to traders from across the state to show an understanding toward the efforts of the association to rid the markets of rats and rodents. He said that the plan was to de-rat markets in one local government area per day starting from 5p.m. The association decided on this time to allow traders and buyers transact their legitimate businesses.

“We also decided to put the exercise in the evening due to the nocturnal nature of rodents and our members had recorded successes in the markets visited till date. “It took us about three hours to cover the Oshodi market when our members went there for the exercise.

“Today, Monday, we will be visiting Suru-Alaba Market in Orile-Ifelodun LCDA by 5p.m. with about 400 EHOs to de-rat it. We are still calling on all other executive secretaries of the local government areas to assist us toward the elimination of rodents in our markets and our environments,’’ he said.

We Have Declared Ambode Enemy Of Ndigbo – Ohanaeze

The apex socio-Igbo cultural organization, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has declared Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode as number one enemy of Ndigbo.

The development is sequel to the demolition of Oshodi market, which is believed to be largely occupied by Ndigbo on the first week of the New Year.

Speaking at a press briefing in Enugu on Monday, the national President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, alongside the National Secretary, Okwu Nnabuike said Ambode by his actions had drawn a battle line between himself and the entire Igbo land.

While describing the demolition as “an action done in bad faith”, the group wondered why the Lagos State Government should carry out such act at a time when it clearly knew that the owners of the shops were in their villages for the Christmas and the New Year festivities.

He said, “it is instructive to observe here that contrary to all principles of common justice, the traders were merely given few days quit notice. It is equally shocking that the government chose such a wrong time for the demolition exercise, thereby not only taking the shops from them but making sure that their wares were looted.

“We are forced to ask: could this be the starting point in implementing Oba of Lagos’s earlier threat during the election period that Ndigbo would be thrown into the Lagoon? Could it be another round of deportation of exercise, similar to what former governor Fashola did? These appear to be so considering that a witch cried in the night and a child died in the morning.”

While maintaining that the Lagos State Government’s action was a threat to the unity of the country, he demanded for adequate compensation of the traders who had suffered great losses as a result of the demolition.

He stressed that “it is quite inhuman for people’s means of livelihood to be taken away from them in such a manner. The government’s claim that arms were recovered from a section of the market does not fly at all here because it cannot be a reason for such a wicked treatment purely targeted on a particular people.

“We demand that the Governor of Lagos State should direct relevant government agencies to adequately compensate these traders; anything short of that, Ndigbo will henceforth regard the Governor as their number one arch-enemy.”

Lagos Govt. Commences Transformation Of Oshodi Market, Bus-Stops

The Lagos State Government says it has shut the Owonifari Market within the Oshodi Market and relocated affected traders and shop owners to the newly-built Isopakodowo Market stalls at Bolade in the area.

This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde.

He said that the government had also commenced the fencing-off of the set-back on the Agege Motor Road that stretches from the Ilupeju end of Oshodi, all the way to the PWD/Ikeja GRA end of the area.

Ayorinde said the move was geared toward the need to sanitise and beautify the entire Oshodi area and bring transformation, particularly to the Owonifari loop, as well as the entire bus stop terminals, which had constituted a menace and an eyesore within the locality.

He said that the Owonifari loop would be transformed into an ultra-modern bus terminus with new bus shelters that were befitting of a structured park in a mega city.

“The fencing-off of the long stretch of the set-back is being undertaken to assist the Federal Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation in particular, with a view to beautifying it and safeguard lives along the railway corridor by discouraging street trading and indiscriminate use of the space,’’ he said.

Ayorinde said the ongoing fencing-off and beautification of the road set-back from the Ilupeju bypass to PWD/Ikeja GRA would constitute the first phase of the transformation of the area.

He said the second phase would begin from PWD/Ikeja GRA and stretch all the way to the Agege/Pen cinema axis.

Ayorinde said that residents should expect from the transformation exercise, a new Oshodi that would be sane, safe and where both traders and commuters would be pleased to visit and trade.

He assured that the traders being relocated had been properly allocated shops within the Isopakodowo market and that the demolition of the loop was in the best interest of the people who should expect a world-class bus terminus there.

The commissioner reiterated Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s commitment to bring development to every area of the state.
He, therefore, urged the Local Council Development Areas and other stakeholders to cooperate with the State Government in achieving the governor’s vision of making the 2016 budget work for every resident.

8 Years After, Lagos Assembly Pardons Impeached Deputy Governor Femi Pedro

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday invalidated the 2007 impeachment of a former deputy governor of the state, Mr Femi Pedro.

The resolution followed the adoption of the recommendation of an eight-member Ad Hoc Committee constituted on July 2, to review the circumstances that led to Pedro’s impeachment.
Pedro, who was deputy to former Gov. Bola Tinubu, was impeached for gross misconduct on May 10, 2007, days to the end of the tenure of the administration.

He had urged the House to revisit his impeachment in a letter sent to the 8th Assembly on compassionate grounds.
The House, after considering the ad-hoc committee report on Thursday, passed a vote of confidence on Pedro, saying the allegations leading to his impeachment were not connected to criminal charges.

The committee, headed by the Majority Leader, Mr Sanai Agunbiade, in its report had said:

“In line with Rule 51 (6) of the Business Rules and Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the committee recommends that this House should, by a substantive motion, review the impeachment passed on Otunba Femi Pedro on Thursday May 10, 2007 by the 5th Assembly.

“Pardon him and pass a vote of confidence on him as a fit and proper person that can be entrusted with political and administrative responsibilities.’’

Discussing the report at plenary, Mr Rotimi Olowo, the Chairman, House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, urged the Assembly to reverse the impeachment of the ex-deputy governor for him to live a normal life.
Olowo said that Pedro had shown remorse and needed to be forgiven.

“To err is human, to forgive is divine. Pedro has shown much remorse and obedience; let’s pardon him to have his sanity back. Pedro has passed through much psychological trauma,’’ he said.

Olowo said the purpose of the impeachment then was not based on fraud or criminal tendencies.

Contributing, Mr Segun Olulade, Chairman, House Committee on Health, commended the ad-hoc committee for its recommendations.

Olulade also commended Pedro for withdrawing court cases challenging his removal, to allow the Assembly wade into the matter.

According to the lawmaker, Pedro should be forgiven and allowed to contribute to the society.

Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho (APC- Mushin I) said: “I am in agreement with the report of the committee; all the allegations against Pedro were not criminal. The former deputy governor has displayed a lot of maturity and honourable behaviour. His name has to be cleared. He is a man of integrity and we should clear him of the allegations.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 36 members of the House were in support of the pardon while only one lawmaker voted against it and another abstained.

The Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, said that the House decided to pardon Pedro because he had shown remorse.
Obasa said that since Pedro was not convicted of any crime by any court of law, the Assembly had decided to pardon him and undo the impeachment served on him in 2007.

Lagos: Ambode Presents N662.58bn Budget Proposal For 2016

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday presented a 2016 budget proposal of N662.58 billion to the Lagos State House of Assembly for approval.

Ambode, who tagged the budget “The People’s Budget”, said that it would promote massive investment in security, transport/traffic management, physical and social infrastructural development as well as enhance job creation.

The budget is made up of capital expenditure of N383.678 billion and a recurrent expenditure of N278.909 billion in the ratio of 58:42 respectively as against 51:49 in 2014 and 2015.

“This represents an improvement of 26 per cent over the budgets of 2014 and 2015 respectively, which stood at N489.69 billion,” Ambode said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the N489.69 billion year 2015 budget was later reordered and signed into law on Sept. 23, 2015.

The reordered budget comprised N19.7 billion capital expenditure and N5.7billion recurrent expenditure within the initial budget size.

Ambode said that the total revenue estimate for 2016 fiscal year was N542.87billion.

He said that this showed that the balance of N119.71billion would be funded through deficit financing that would be 0.41 per cent of the state GDP based on 2016 budget alone and a cumulative debt to GDP ratio of about 3 per cent.

The budget breakdown revealed that Economic Affairs had the highest allocation of N211,04 billion followed by General Public Services, N120,50 billion.

Education and Health had N113.37 billion and N64.67 billion respectively.

Housing and Community Housing and Community Amenities got N62.71 billion while Environment got N53.04 billion and Public Order and Safety N28.55 billion.

Others are Recreation, Culture and Religion, N4.63 billion and Social Protection N4.02 billion.

Ambode said that the 2016 budget would be used to strategically build new infrastructure, while existing ones would be maintained.

“Wealth and employment creation will receive a lot of attention as we commence the implementation of the Employment Trust Scheme which will set aside N25 billion over a four-year period for job creation,” he said.

Ambode pointed out that the Federal Government still owed the state N50 billion expended on federal roads in the state.

“Fiscal federalism and according Lagos a special status will benefit the state as we implore the Federal Government to look into this as soon as possible.

“We look forward to an early refund to enable us utilise the fund on other infrastructure that require attention,” he said.

“To say that the dwindling oil revenues is affecting the revenues of the state and the nation is to state the obvious.

“Our Internally Generated Revenue has been our saving grace in Lagos State, but that does not imply that we are immune to the crisis rocking other states,” Ambode said.

He, therefore, implored residents to make it a point of duty to pay their taxes appropriately as and when due.

“On our part, we promise that this budget shall be implemented faithfully and in the best interest of Lagosians,” he said.

Receiving the budget, the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, said the presentation was necessary to obtain legislative consent for the amount of money to be spent in the coming financial year.

“We have all listened with rapt attention to how the wealth of our state will be utilised for our common good in year 2016.

“The responsibility is now on the members of this honourable house to do the needful; and I assure you that we will meticulously perform our constitutional duty.

The speaker, who commended the governor on road infrastructure and procurement of mass transit buses, urged him to do more to ensure traffic flow.

NAN reports that the speaker handed over the demands of the residents collated from the town hall meetings held by the lawmakers across the 40 constituencies to the governor.

Ambode said this while presenting the year 2016 budget proposal to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor presented a budget proposal of N662.58 billion.

Ambode said that the programme would be done in collaboration with the Federal Government, which would provide 60 per cent of the funding. He said that the state government would provide the remaining 40 per cent.
“This programme promises not only to improve the daily nutrition of our children. It will also create an economy of its own, with opportunities for job creation, income generation, poverty alleviation, and so on,” he said.

Ambode said that the state government’s intervention in education would continue in the areas of maintenance of public school buildings and facilities, and provision of basic instructional materials. He listed other areas of intervention to include free textbooks for schools and mandatory capacity building programmes for teachers in public schools.

“We will deliver this project in year 2016,” Ambode said.

“We will place the completion on-going road construction projects and pedestrian bridges on our priority list in year 2016. He said that the government would promote environmentally friendly habits among the populace and complete on-going drainage projects.

On Agriculture and Food Security, Ambode said that state would collaborate with other states in the development of a commodity value chain, specifically for rice production.

“In 2016, we will invest more in Ayobo Fish Farm Estate at Alimosho to boost fish production and provide employment opportunities for our people. In order to secure ourselves food-wise, an Agric Park will be established in 2016,” Ambode said.

Lagos Raises Alarm Over Contaminated Poultry Products

The Lagos State Government has warned residents not to buy or consume contaminated poultry products like chicken and turkey currently in circulation in the state.
On the dangers inherent in consuming such products, state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Toyin Suarau, who disclosed this at the weekend, said imported contaminated poultry products were seized and buried by men of the Nigeria Custom Service in Badagry but were later exhumed by some unscrupulous individuals with the intent to sell same to some unsuspecting consumers.
While receiving officials of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, who came on the directive of the Federal Government to appeal for support on how to sensitize the teeming populace in Lagos on the danger posed by this act, Suarau noted that the exhumed poultry produce were poisonous and could lead to death if consumed.
He said: “This visit by officials of National Orientation Agency was based on the circular received by NOA about the recently exhumed contaminated poultry produce being destroyed by officials of the Nigeria Custom Service somewhere in Badagry. The need for sensitization on the dangers associated with consuming these exhumed poisonous poultry produce cannot be overemphasized especially in view of the havoc it poses to the public.”
In the same vein, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Food Security, Mr. Okanlawon Sanni, added that the state Ministry of Agriculture would assist in mobilizing and sensitizing its poultry farmers and members of the public to be their brothers’ keeper and be alert to happenings around them.

Lagos Dep. Gov. Urges Public School Managers To Shun Negligence

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule, on Monday urged public school Head Teachers and Principals to be diligent and take ownership of their schools to improve learning.

Adebule made the plea during an inspection tour of some primary and secondary schools in the State in the company of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Olabisi Ariyo.

She expressed displeasure over the dilapidated and dirty condition of some of the physical infrastructure and environment of the schools.

The Deputy Governor said in spite of the massive work the state government was doing to refurbish the public schools, their managers were still unable to take proper care of the facilities.

”I am not happy with the state of some the schools and it is because there are no consequences for such negligible act by school head teachers, principals and teachers.

”We can see some school environment so dirty and bushy, the classrooms and toilets are in bad shape, some were rowdy and noisy even when teachers were there.

”These school managers are seeing the schools as government properties and have refused to take ownership of these schools.

“I urge public school managers to imbibe maintenance culture, as this would make the schools comfortable, inhabitable and conducive for learning, ” she said.

Adebule said that there would also be consequences for Principals and Head Teachers whose schools were dirty, to serve as a deterrent.

She said that government would continue to place high priority on education by ensuring adequate human resource and infrastructure development.

The deputy governor urged public school managers to collaborate with the government.

Some of the schools visited were Agidingbi Junior and Senior Grammar schools in Agidingbi, Estate Primary School and Ogba Primary school in Ogba.

Other are All Saints Primary School, Holy Trinity Primary School, Bishop Oluwole Primary School, Sonmori Senior Comprehensive High School and Ifako Ijaiye Senior Comprehensive High school, all in Ifako-Ijaiye, as well as Ahmad Memorial and Muslim Primary School in Agege.

Fashola Is My ‘Greatest Achievement’ – Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, said that choosing a worthy successor was his greatest achievement.

Fashola, now Minister in charge of Power, Works and Housing in the present dispensation, took over the governorship of Lagos State from Tinubu in 2007. Before then, Fashola was Tinubu’s chief of staff.

In “Asiwaju, Untold story of the Leader,” a special publication of TheNEWS, Tinubu reacted to a question of what he would consider his best legacy after spending eight years in office. His reply was that apart from the financial engineering of Lagos, especially to bring financial autonomy to the state and eliminate wastage and mismanagement, “my greatest legacy is Babatunde Fashola.”

He added: “I identified and endorsed him. That was when my corporate background as a recruiter for Deloitte came to play. Part of the training when you go on operational audit is that the first things you evaluate are the personnel and the questionnaire given to them and how they answer it. You look at the ability of individuals to really take and develop others. There is nothing unique about any leadership. Everybody can come up with different ideas. You can take different routes and arrive at the same answer.”

Tinubu went further that no matter how much steel and metal you put together, “the greatest achievement and legacy is the ability to develop other leaders who can succeed you, otherwise your legacy will be in shambles.” He added that though it was a very difficult and challenging period for him, “I thank God I stuck to my guns.”

He revealed another model his government set up in Lagos: to separate politics from governance, a situation that gave Fashola ample time and concentration to perform.

As he put: “The model we set up is working well and I will recommend it for Nigeria. Let the governor take care of the administration and its nitty gritty, if he is scholarly enough and sharp, while other political leaders take the political pressures off him. I don’t have files to sign. Let them go and sign the files and deal with the routine of governance so that he can focus on the developmental goals of the state.”

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday reassured that he would effectively address the issue of traffic congestion and improve road networks in the state.

“The commissioning is a milestone in public transportation system in the state.
“It is a delivery of world class transport infrastructure that will bring comfort and convenience to commuters, particularly Ikorodu residents,” Ambode said.
He said that the BRT system was initiated as part of strategies to modernise the public transport, like other major city states in the around.

“It is intended to provide efficient service that will encourage patronage by the middle-class thereby reducing the number of private vehicles on our roads.
“Today, the BRT system has to a large extent lived up to that expectation,” Ambode said.

Also speaking, a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bola Tinubu commended Ambode and his predecessor, Mr Babatunde Fashola for being creative, intelligent and making Lagos a model city.

He urged Lagos residents to embrace, peace, discipline, accountability and continuity.

Governor Ambode Pledges Support To Bone Marrow Transplant Centre In Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday pledged the support of the state government to see to the completion of the Bone Marrow Transplant Centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), which will go a long way to save the lives of those suffering sickle cell disorder.

The Governor spoke when the Chairman, Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN), Professor Olu Akinyanju and National Direction and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Anneite Akinsete, paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, where he was adopted as the Patron of the Sickle Cell Club, Lagos, Nigeria, a position only previously occupied only by former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

????????????????????????????????????

Commending the Foundation for intervening and providing succor to victims of Sickle Cell in Nigeria, Governor Ambode expressed optimism that the establishment of the Centre will be a major breakthrough, saying that the state government will provide support in line with the cardinal programmes of his administration to touch as many lives as possible.

“I want to say that I am surrounded by people who have sickle cell disorder, so I understand the depth of what you are doing. In my private life, I have also tried to touch lives, but again I want to commit officially here that we would support the establishment of that Bone Marrow Stem Cell Technology, even though it’s in LUTH, Lagos state as part of our own contribution, we would make sure that it takes off next year”.

“The reason is very simple; we’ve already sent like five patients to Rome and have come back and that technology has proven that we can go away from our past belief always thinking that people with sickle cell are condemned to death. But this new technology is a proof that we can save lives. As far as this is situated in Lagos, we as a government must ensure that everyone who visits that centre, somebody’s live must be saved and we are committed to doing that”, he said.

The Governor also thanked the Foundation for deeming it fit to adopt him as a Patron of the Lagos Sickle Cell Club, saying it was for him, a great honour to be accorded the privilege to contribute his own quota to alleviate the sufferings of sickle cell victims.

“I know what sickle cell disorder means to the average Nigerian family. Like you rightly pointed out, every extended family in Nigeria is affected by this and for a non-governmental organisation to come up and be in existence for almost two decades with the strides that you have actually articulated in the speech speaks volume about your level of commitment and your need to touch humanity which is something that also touches me”.

“Whatever it is that we have had in terms of partnership with the ministry of health, we are going to scale that up because I know that it is not only on your own level that we can form relationship but relationship that brings value and a win-win situation to all of us. I know that doing that, we would have been doing that major assignment given to us by God and that is touching humanity and I want to thank you greatly for bestowing this honour on me”, he said.

Earlier, Professor Akinyanju said the visit to Governor Ambode was to commemorate his adoption as Patron of the Sickle Cell Club Lagos and also solicit for continued partnership and support of the state government, saying it will go a long way to benefit victims of the disorder and their families.

Lagos State Govt. Promotes 150 Firemen

Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State, has promoted 150 officers and men of the state Fire Service as part of efforts to save lives and properties.

Ambode, who decorated some of the officers with their new ranks on Monday in Lagos, said the safety of Lagosians and their properties would not be taken for granted.

Represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Seye Oladejo, he described the job of the firemen as dangerous.

Ambode said that the promotion was part of government’s commitment to the improvement of the service and the officers’ welfare.

“The Lagos State Government is indeed very proud of the state fire service.

“The approval of such number of officers for promotion at the same time in one organisation is a sign that the government is proud of their commitment.

“At the same time, I want to assure them of the government’s support to the service. We promise to always improve on the equipment and the welfare of the officers.

“As a government, we have also noticed improvement to response by the firemen to different incidents which is worthy of commendation.

“We are aware of the risk attached to your vocation, we promise to always provide the needed support,’’ Ambode said.

The governor, therefore, urged the promoted officers to put in more efforts as more was required of those that had benefitted.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Ibironke Sodeinde, urged the officers for more commitment to service, noting that there were people watching the performance of individuals.

Sodeinde said that any one that had done well would be rewarded by man and God.

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, commended the governor for the promotion, noting that the exercise would serve as a booster to his men to be committed.

Fadipe said that one Assistant Director was promoted to Grade Level 15, six Chief Fire Superintendent to level 14 and five Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent on level 13.

Also, 47 Principal Fire Superintendent on level 12 were among the promoted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 114 of the promoted officers were jointly decorated with their new ranks by the commissioner, permanent secretary and fire director at the Ministry’s board room, Alausa Secretariat.

Ogunlewe’s Allegation Against Ambode Untrue, Irresponsible – LG Bosses

The Conference of Local Government Executive Secretaries in Lagos State has debunked an allegation by the former Minister of Works and chieftain of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Adeseye Ogunlewe accusing the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode of causing under-development in the grass-roots by deducting 80 percent from funds accruing to Local Governments in the State.

The Executive Secretaries, in a press conference on Thursday, described the allegation by Ogunlewe as a “blatant falsehood” which is nothing short of “an act of gross irresponsibility and a clear evidence of desperation of a man whose political diminution has inflicted an advanced state of abnormal behaviour”.

Executive Secretary of Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Chairman of Conference of Local Government Executive Secretaries, Hon. Alabi Kolade David, who addressed journalists alongside his colleagues, recalled the shameful role played by Ogunlewe in the past against the people of Lagos, and wondered where the former Minister “suddenly and mischievously discovered his love for Lagosians so much that he felt it was his responsibility to raise false alarm”.

“For the information of teeming Lagosians, it is on record that in 1999, the people of Lagos East Senatorial Constituency voted Senator Seye Ogunlewe on the platform of the progressive party, Alliance for Democracy. In a classic case of betrayal of trust, he crossed to the rival PDP and became the Minister of Works”.

“As Minister, Senator Seye Ogunlewe actively conspired with other members of the PDP to withhold the funds due to the Local Governments of Lagos State for 23 months in violation of an order of the Supreme Court, the highest court of the land”.

“Through the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, he (Ogunlewe) unleashed mayhem on Lagos motorists and engaged our Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a war from which many still carry the scars till today,” David recalled.

The Executive Secretaries said in the last five months, they have had the opportunity of working with Governor Ambode, whose deep passion for the autonomy of the Local Government is immeasurable, adding that the respect which the Governor has for the political and administrative personnel is equally exemplary.

While urging the public to disregard the allegation, the Executive Secretaries said rather than deduct from the funds of LGs, Governor Ambode instead elected to empower the twenty LGs and 37 LCDAs in the State.

They added: “Governor Ambode’s 23 years in the Local Government service enabled him to see the strength which lies within while others see only the weakness. Governor Ambode has resolved to promote, protect and propagate the autonomy of the Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas, in the conviction, that the old system of looking down on management of councils is unhelpful and unsustainable”.

“For instance, his insistence that Local Governments and their management must take charge of the forthcoming construction of two roads per each Local Government is an eloquent testimony to this ideology”.

While assuring that the LGs and LCDAs in Lagos are up to the task of speeding up development and responding to the demands of Lagosians, the council bosses emphasised that it is on record that since the administration of former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lagos has never defaulted to pay salaries to all teachers and staff.

Besides, the Executive Secretaries urged the National Assembly to legislate the 37 LCDAs in Lagos into Local Governments and allocate one percent of the revenue of the federation to Lagos, which is the highest contributor to the Gross Domestic Product.
