Jang, Rep Kick Against Grazing Reserve In Plateau

Immediate past governor of Plateau State and senator representing Plateau North in the National Assembly, Jonah Jang, has described the issue of grazing reserve as irrelevant and one that portends grave danger to people of the state.
He therefore asked the Governor Simon Lalong to do away with the policy in the interest of people of the state.
Lalong had earlier endorsed the policy and had already concluded plans to introduce grazing reserves for herdsmen in some designated areas in the state. But in a statement issued yesterday in Jos by his aide, Comrade Clinton Garba, Jang noted that the issue has generated a lot of controversy amongst Plateau people because the government of the day had decided to play politics with issues that affect the very fabric that defines the people’s heritage, culture and their land.
He urged Plateau people to rise against any subtle attempt or otherwise, to cede their land for the purpose of satisfying the selfish and egotistical whims of a few who are hell bent on disturbing the peace.
The former governor, who berated the All Progressive Congress, APC led administration in the state for non-performance, wondered how a government which he said had not shown any interest in developing agriculture in the state in the last one year, had suddenly awoken to support a policy that is neither in the interest of Plateau people nor to the public good, except for “the outrageous contract to supply fertiliser which farmers are yet to receive.”
Jang added: “For the Federal Government which owns no cattle, to connive with willing state governors to impose a grazing reserve policy on hapless citizens who have suffered the brunt of rampaging herdsmen in the no distant past, is not only abuse of their rights but an assault on their already battered psyche.
This must be vehemently resisted.” Jang said his position on grazing reserve policy remains the same both on the floor of the senate and at any other forum that Plateau people have not land to cede the federal government or any group for grazing.
“As a people, who have experienced the atrocities of those who seek to take over their land by whatever means, Plateau people must be resilient in rejecting any law or request that seeks to tamper with their heritage, not even the involvement of the government of the day should deter them,” he warned.
He therefore called on the people to “rise up against any subtle attempt or otherwise to cede their land for the purpose of satisfying the selfish and egotistical whims of a few who are hell bent on disturbing the peace of the state.”
Also, member representing Barki Ladi/Riyom federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Istifanus Gyang in a statement signed by his media aide, Mr Chuwang Dungs, cautioned Lalong against taking actions that would be regretted in the long run, noting that its aftermath could plunge the state into crisis.
He warned that no portion of lands within his constituency should be gazetted for such grazing plan because his people vehemently disagree with it.

I Won’t Rest Until Appeal Court Sacks Jang From Senate- Gov. Lalong

The Plateau State governor, Hon. Simon Lalong, on Wednesday said that the All Progressive Congress (APC) would soon regain its mandate stolen in the March 28 Plateau North Senatorial elections.

It would be recalled that the immediate, past governor of the state, Jonah Jang, was declared winner of the elections.

Lalong stated this, on Wednesday, while addressing a crowd at Government House, Little Rayfield, following his victory at the tribunal.

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Jos, the state capital, on Monday, affirmed the April 11, 2015 election of Lalong.

The chairman of the tribunal, Justice Johnson Candide, dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party

Candidate (PDP) candidate in the election, Gyang Pwajok, for what he called lack of credible evidence to prove his petition.

According to Lalong “the APC in Plateau would not sleep till the Court of Appeal also recover our senatorial mandate from Jang. We are in court because we are confident that we won the elections and we would ensure that our mandate is given to us.

Lalong also offered an olive branch to members of the opposition, stressing that his administration would carry along the 53 tribes along.

Transition Committee Lied on Report, Says Jang

Former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah David Jang has described the report of the transition committee set up by the incumbent Governor of the state, Mr Simon Lalong, in which he was alleged to have left a debt of N222.3bn as untrue.

He insistied that he left debts and liabilities of N103.9b.Observing the new debt figure paraded by the committee as mischievously manufactured, a statement signed by Barrister Olivia Dazyem, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, said the comprehensive breakdown of the debt is well documented in the handover notes and leaves no one in doubt.

He therefore urged the committee to go back and study the handover notes properly.

Describing the committee’s report as “a clear distortion and manipulation of facts, aimed at personal vendetta, witch-hunt and smearing the good name and achievements of the outgone PDP government led by Dr. Jonah David Jang”, Dazyem said “a quick look at the compositions of the committees reveals that they were deliberately selected and made up of persons that have grudges with the immediate past administration.”

I Leave Office As Nigeria’s Poorest Gov.- Jang

The Plateau State Governor and factional Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Jonah David Jang, has said he will be leaving office as the poorest governor in Nigeria.

Jang said this while speaking on Sunday at an interdenominational service to mark this year’s Democracy Day, which happens to be his last after eight years of stewardship in the state.

He challenged his critics to go check the records and prove otherwise, insisting his government is submitting a detailed handing over note, which copies he said he wished every Plateau State citizen has.

Jang, who made his last appearance in such a capacity, said he will be meeting for the first time face to face with his successor, Barrister Simon Baki Lalong, during the May 29 hand over.

He told the worshipers not to blame President Goodluck Jonathan for the woes of the country but rather the fall in oil price.

The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Titus Ayuba Alams, apologized to workers of the state for the lack of payment of their salaries.

Alams said it was not intentionally done but was largely as a result of the dwindling income of the state government. The Plateau State Governor and factional Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Jonah David Jang, has said he will be leaving office as the poorest governor in Nigeria.

Plateau Governorship Election, How Jang Lost…

Governor Jonah Jang’s bid to exchange positions with Senator Gyang Pwajok in the Plateau governorship and House of Assembly election comes unstuck after voters shot down his proposal to position his alter ego as his successor

Many residents of Plateau State are still basking in the euphoria of the victory of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Barr. Simon Lalong in last Saturday’s  governorship election as they go about celebrating the victory with drums and songs waving brooms as they go round the city.

Residences of the winner at the Federal Low Cost area and that of his deputy, Prof. Sonny Tyoden at the Rayfield area are being besieged by supporters who dance to various tunes in celebration of the election victory.

Besides the politicians, citizens also show solidarity waving brooms as they stand in front of their houses cheering the convoy of vehicles carrying supporters round the city and discussing the factors that led to the upset victory of Lalong over the establishment candidate, Gyang Pwajok of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP

Many who are unhappy with the defeat of Pwajok blame incumbent governor, Jonah Jang for “bringing the APC to Plateau State because of his selfishness.”

It would be recalled that several pleas for the governor to rescind the decision of making Senator Pwajok his successor fell on deaf ears hence the decision of the people to give their votes to the APC candidate.

However, the chances of the candidates were not unconnected with different affiliations the people had as reflected in the manner in which the votes were cast.

2015: Jang, Pwajok and the Anger on the Plateau

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Gubernatorial Primaries in Plateau State has come and gone. But it appears that the dust it raised before its conduct has remain. Although about fifteen candidates participated in the Primaries, one man that caught and has remained in the Spotlight is Senator GNS Pwajok.

Senator Pwajok was the Chief of Staff to Governor Jonah Jang until the demise of Gyang Dantong, the Senator representing Plateau North in the National Assembly. Senator Pwajok’s nomination to contest the Bye Election and subsequent emergence as the Senator replacing the Late Sen. Dantong was the beginning of what is now a very tough albeit unnecessary political situation on the Plateau especial fr the Peoples Democratic Party.

Initially the speculation was that Sen. Pwajok was just on a money to hold the Plateau North Senatorial Seat for his mentor until the signs emerged that it was going to be a Swap Game between him and Gov. Jang. And that’s when the people began to see intrigues that played out in the build up to; and the eventual outcome of the PDP Primaries.

And now a majority of the people especially those from the Southern Senatorial Zone are signing the song of marginalization. Their main grouse is that the Central and Northern Senatorial Zones have enjoyed eight years each in the Governorships of Senator Joshua Dariye and Da Jonah Jang; and so the natural logical thing to do is to allow a Governor enmerged from the Southern Zone. And if the allegations are only political then there will surely be solutions politically. But from what is being peddled on the Plateau, there seems to be more to the Jang – Pwajok affair that political.

Stories have it that Senator Pwajok is not only from the same Jos South LGA and Du Village like Jang, but that he is actually a cousin to the Governor. Now this appears to add an entirely new twist to the drama. Many are not interested in the merits of having Pwajok as a Governor for they simply are seedling Jang remaining in Office after eight years; with the possibility of Gov Pwajok spending another eight and then the possibility of also grooming one of the sons of Jang to take over after Pwajok.

Truth be told, the electorate on the Plateau will have a very tough choice to make during the governorship elections next year. And how they navigate this will be up to every stakeholder. There could be compromise on all sides within the body polity especially the PDP because it appears to have a better grip. The chances of the opposition cashing on this is also there. Already a conversation with someone who’s eye is on the situation revealed a gang up plan to have just about anyone but Pwajok as Governor.

Nigeria’s political consideration since 1999 seemed to have hinged on ethno religious inclinations. And in States like Plateau where Christians are in clear majority, the ethnic card is quite handy. Senator Pwajok is a fi e gentleman. Having been a Chief of Staff and a Senator, I think with a little mentoring will an excellent Governor. Will the people on the Plateau calm down and give him a chance to prove that he’s not a Jang Stooge but a Governor for all? Will Pwajok begin from now build confidence in both the Stakeholders and the electorates that he is not going to be a Berom Governor but that of every ethnic stock on the Plateau? Will Governor Jang be satisfied with a Governor Pwajok and allow other political appointments especially Ministerial and Ambassadorial go to the Southern Zone especially with him likely replacing Pwajok as Senator?

How Plateau is able to get out of this will inspire a new shift in the way we regard ethnicity and religion over competence and capabilities in our quest to have the best hands govern us.
