Abacha Loot: FG Wins Case As Malami Heads To U.S. Next Week For Repatriation

The Federal Government has won the case to have the country’s money looted by ex-head of state, Sani Abacha repatriated from the United State of America where the fund has been stashed.

This is equally as the Attorney-General, Malami is billed to visit US next week for the fund’s repatriation. This was disclosed, Friday, by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Shehu was reacting to some claims making the rounds that President Buhari had donated USD 500 million to Democratic Hillary Clinton’s campaign in the recently held Presidential elections in U.S which saw the Republican Donald Trump emerge the President-elect.

According to Shehu, Nigeria has no such money to throw around and even if it does have, President Buhari who has zero tolerance for waste cannot do such unjustifiable act. “What is the craziest accusation made against President Buhari?”

“That he donated USD 500 million to Hillary’s campaign and that Donald Trump is angry. This has gone viral, sadly Nigerians are believing it!”

“President Buhari’s Nigeria doesn’t have this kind of money to throw around. Even if the money is there, this President is the least likely person to give it as donation, and for what?”

“As we speak, President Buhari is concluding agreements with the U.S. to return our stolen money in their banks. A FGN account has already been given for the return of one million Dollars from Alamisiegha.”

“Judgement on the USD 480 million Abacha loot has been won and our Attorney-General, Malami (SAN) will be in the US next week to speak to the Department of Justice, USDOJ on the next steps for the return of that as well.”

Heads May Roll As FG Restructures Aviation Agencies

Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has said that restructuring of the agencies under his Ministry was one of the key policy initiatives of the Buhari administration.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja when members of the Senate Committee on Aviation visited the Ministry on an oversight function, Sirika said other key programmes of the regime include safety and security, infrastructure and airport concession, establishment of a national carrier and a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Others are establishment of agro-allied cargo infrastructure and establishment of aircraft leasing company. He added that all the projects would be realised through Public Private Partnership (PPP) procurement method.
On the restructuring, Sirika noted that most of the parastatals suffered from manpower imbalance, adding that their operations were not in conformity with the Acts establishing them.
“That is why we want to restructure them so they become more efficient and service-oriented,” he said.
However, fears are rife that the exercise may lead to further sack of workers as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Adamu Aliero,  toed the Minister’s path as he insisted some of the agencies were top heavy, a development, he said, gulped a huge chunk of their budgets.
On the performance of the 2016 budget as at November 9, Sirika revealed his Ministry got N19,858,571,749 as appropriation for personnel, overhead and capital, adding that the total amount released stood at N8,457,010,646, while N4,290,948,284 was spent.
He stated that the balance on appropriation was N11,401,561,102 while balance on amount released stood at N4,166,062,362. In his submission, he said the total releases was 43 per cent while the total average performance was 65 per cent.
In his remarks at the event, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Adamu Aliero, lamented that some agencies were over bloated.
“There is one agency that has 10 General Managers. Paying salaries alone could take up to 30 per cent of what was appropriated as capital. That’s not good for this country,” Aliero said.
He expressed joy in the performance of the Ministry with regards to the budget, assuring that his committee would always support the Minister where necessary.

Pope Heads To Sweden To Commemorate Martin Luther

Pope Francis goes to Sweden on Monday to help start commemorations of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation, a trip that has won him praise from Lutherans but criticism from Catholic conservatives.

Martin Luther, a German, started the Reformation in 1517 when he wrote 95 theses criticizing the Catholic Church for corruption in Rome, including the buying of ecclesiastical privileges, nepotism, usury and the selling of indulgences.

It led to a violent, often political schism throughout Europe and Christianity, prompting among other things the 30 Years’ War, the destruction of English monasteries, and the burning of numerous “heretics” on both sides.

Francis is traveling to the southern Swedish city of Lund, where the Lutheran World Federation was founded in 1947, for a joint service with Lutherans to launch Reformation commemorations that will continue throughout the world next year.

On Monday Francis and Lutheran leaders will hold an ecumenical prayer service in Lund’s Lutheran cathedral and another inter-religious event in nearby Malmo.

Last January, Francis, who is keen to continue Catholic-Lutheran dialogue, asked Protestants and other Christian Churches for forgiveness for past persecution by Catholics.

Conservative Catholics believe their Church has conceded too much to Lutherans and should not be taking part in any event that praises Luther.
