Ondo Elections: Why We Held Primary Election In Ibadan – Sheriff

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has explained that the basis for taking its primary election to Ibadan, Oyo State, was to prevent crisis in Ondo State.

The faction had earlier announced the conduct of the primary election at its secretariat on Oyemekun Street, Akure but later changed the venue to Ibadan where it was eventually held on Monday.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the faction, Mr Yemi Akintomidesaid the change of venue became imperative to avoid political crisis in the state.

He added that the change in the venue was also to avoid any legal action which may be taken by the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party which is led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Earlier, the Ali Modu Sheriff faction led by Mr Jimoh Ibrahim had shifted its primary election following an order of an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure.

The factional chairman of the party, Prince Biyi Poroye had said during a Press Conference that the faction would hold itsprimary poll either in Abuja or Ibadan, Oyo State.

Eventually, at the end of the primary poll, Mr Ibrahim defeated Hon. Sola Ebiseni and Prince Bamiduro Dada.

It would be recalled that the former Commissioner for Justice andAttorney General of the State, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) had emerged the candidate of the PDP at a primary election supervised byofficials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

PDP Holds Convention, Extends Makarfi, Others’ Tenure

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday defied attempts by the police and the Department of State Service (DSS) to scuttle its national convention, as delegates relocated to the state secretariat of the party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to hold the convention.
The police had sealed off the Sharks Stadium venue of the convention and barred delegates from gaining access to the venue.

But at the state secretariat of the party at Aba Road, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, declared the convention open.
The convention approved the extension of the tenure of the caretaker committee led by Makarfi by 12 months and also increased its membership from seven to 13 through a motion moved by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and seconded by a former Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Zainab Maina.

The Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, pushed for the extension of the caretaker committee, which was unanimously approved.
The convention had earlier adopted a motion moved by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Leo Ogor, and seconded by the Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the PDP, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, to amend the agenda of the convention and step down the issue of election.

Markarfi, addressing the convention after the extension of his committee’s tenure, assured the delegates that his committee would effectively position the party for 2019 and would organise another convention within the period.
Markarfi had earlier inaugurated the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
Performing the inauguration at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Makarfi said the NEC included the PDP governors, National Assembly Caucus, Board of Trustees (BoT), National Caucus, the 36 state PDP chairmen and national officers of the party.

He said in the absence of the elected national officers, the National Caretaker Committee members would be part of NEC, adding that his committee members would cease to be NEC members once national officers are elected.
At the meeting were the PDP governors, National Assembly Caucus, members of the PDP BoT, National Caucus, 36 state PDP chairmen and National Caretaker Committee members of the party.

Breaking: Police Seals Off PDP’s Convention Venue

Armed mobile policemen have taken over Shark Stadium, venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention, in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

Security men are all over Moscow Road, where the stadium is located. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the street, and those who decide to walk are being questioned.

Omojuwa.Com will keep you posted as the situation further escalates.

Our Convention Will Go On As Scheduled Despite The Illegality – PDP

Okon Abang, a judge of the federal high court in Abuja had earlier ruled that the caretaker committee was illegal and could not conduct any function on behalf of the party.

But in a statement issued on Thursday, Dayo Adeyeye, spokesman of the committee, accused Abang of “deliberately” engaging in acts capable of derailing the country’s democracy.

“We have just received information that Justice Okon Abang of the federal high court in Abuja has granted an order of interlocutory injunction stopping our scheduled national convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, but we want to state that the judgment of the 4th of July, 2016 supersedes any ex-parte order or interlocutory Injunctions,” he said.

“So, our national convention will hold as scheduled in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

“He has penchant for abuse of court processes and actions of legal impunity. This judge Nigerians will recall, issued judgment against the governor of Abia State that led to INEC re-issuing another certificate of return to a man who did not contest election thereby causing unnecessary hardship on the people of that state.

“He also issued an order to INEC to recognise senator Sheriff’s candidates in Edo and Ondo states before they could even plan their purported congress in Edo.

“In today’s case, this same judge out rightly denied the PDP representation in court which is unheard of by serving the plaintiff (Sheriff & Co.) who instituted the case also as PDP (defendants).

“His excesses are extremely absurd, strange and unbecoming of a judge who enjoys putting the judiciary on the spot. We therefore bring this matter before the highest level of Judiciary in the country to stop this judge forthwith from waging war against the PDP.

“Finally, the party calls on all its members and teaming supporters nationwide to remain calm and law abiding and be rest assured that the PDP national convention will hold as scheduled and all preparation towards the August 17, 2016 national convention remains the same.”

Apologise, Refund N10bn Wasted On PDP Convention, APC Tells Wike

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has been told to apologise and refund the N10 billion from the State coffers which he wasted on last Saturday’s inconclusive National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made the demand in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, and issued on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.

Rivers APC said: “The well advertised PDP National Convention in Port Harcourt has come and gone with its disastrous outcome. With the party now factionalised into three, the demise of the once greatest political party in Africa is not far from sight. “As much as we sympathise with the endangered party of the torn umbrella, we hereby unreservedly condemn Chief Nyesom Wike for wasting a whopping sum of N10 billion belonging to the good people of Rivers State on this charade, especially in these lean times. This is not only condemnable but also abhorrent and unacceptable to the good people of Rivers State. We therefore request Chief Wike and his cotravellers to account for and return this huge sum to the Rivers State treasury as we cannot continue to fold our hands and watch him mortgage the future of Rivers State through his shocking financial recklessness.”

Rivers APC berated PDP leaders who turned up for the ill-fated convention, saying that they should have known better.

“Those PDP leaders who gathered in Port Harcourt to waste the scarce resources of Rivers State are as guilty as their host, Chief Wike. For crying out loud, they should have known that the so called National Convention would be a charade in view of the court order barring any such exercise and with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stating from the very beginning that it would neither participate nor recognise the outcome of the purported convention,” Rivers APC said.

The party sympathized with PDP Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, who was unceremoniously removed in Port Harcourt after being lured with the fake promise that he would be made to contest and win election as the party’s substantive chairman.

The statement, however, wondered how Sheriff despite his wealth of political experience could fall into the hands of treacherous Wike who, together with out-voted former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, destroyed PDP when they ensured that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi and other party pillars were forced out of PDP, thus inadvertently laying the foundation for the party’s loss of power.

“We wonder why Sheriff is crying that he was betrayed at Port Harcourt,” Rivers APC said, adding: “If we may ask, does a leopard change its spots? If Wike could betray and ridicule Amaechi, who did everything humanly possible to make him Obio-Akpor Local Government Chairman, his Chief of Staff and nominated him as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, then we wonder why Sheriff or any other PDP leader should trust him not to betray them.”

The Ali Modu Sheriff-led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has commenced consultation on the outcome of the Saturday’s Port Harcourt national convention of the party.

Inuwa Bwala, the Special Adviser on Media to the former Chairman Sheriff, disclosed this during an interaction with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr. Bwala said members of the NWC were already meeting in an undisclosed location to look at legal action that could be taken on the decision reached at the convention.

“I can tell you that the Sheriff and other members are still meeting to deliberate on what transpired at the convention.

“They have invited their lawyers to advise them on the next line of action,” Mr. Bwala said.

He said the meeting might continue till Monday.

Mr. Bwala Mr. Sheriff did not receive any court order stopping the convention until Friday, adding that the four court orders received on that day were “parallel and conflicting.”

He said in order not to violate any of the orders, Mr. Sheriff called a meeting of the NWC and other organs who advised that the convention be suspended.

Various stakeholders and interest groups within the party have been mounting pressure on the leadership of the party to set in motion programmes for the national convention tentatively fixed for May 21.

The pressure was a reaction to a directive by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) mandating the National Chairman to set up the committees, for the purposes of conducting the convention.

In a dramatic U-turn, the same BoT, through its acting Chairman, Senator Walid Jubrin, said on Tuesday that the board is now on the same page with other organs of the party to stand behind Sheriff in steering the affairs of the party. The decision to offer three months life line to the National Chairman came after a meeting between the PDP Governors’ Forum, the BoT, the NWC and the PDP National Assembly Caucus at Ondo State Governor’s Lodge. Mimiko pointed out that all organs of the party were represented at the meeting. Speaking on the outcome of the meeting by the former PDP ministers, the Governor declared that every past minister is a product of the state caucus of the party. His words, “They (the former PDP Ministers) emanate from the state. The caucus of the party is all designed that every state is represented by the chairman of the party.
