Aisha Buhari’s Book: Guests Refuse To Disclose Donations

Dignitaries who on Thursday attended the public presentation of a book written by the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, deliberately refused to make their donations public.

 It was not clear whether their decision was based on the present administration’s anti-graft posture.

 The prominent Nigerians converged on the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for the presentation of Mrs. Buhari’s book, “The Essentials of Beauty Therapy: A Complete Guide for Beauty Therapy.”

 The proceeds from the presentation, the organisers said, would be sent to parents of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted from Chibok in April, 2014 and the parents of the boys abducted in Buni Yadi.

 Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo started the secret donation when he announced that Mrs. Buhari should not expect any big donation from him because he and the President were on half salaries.

 He added that he would not be able to donate big money because “Buhari is very strict on money matters.”

 “The President and I are on half salaries. The President is very strict on money issues. So, don’t expect me to make a large donation,” he said.

 Osinbajo said the presentation of the book highlighted the importance of the girl-child education as he observed that if the wife of the President had not got the opportunity to go to school, she would not have been able to write the book and teach others.

 He said, “Girl-child education is still an issue, girls not having the opportunity to go to school. If the wife of the President didn’t have the opportunity to go to school, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to reach others.

 “It emphasises the importance of education. Her desire to dedicate the proceeds of the presentation to the victims of insurgency and particularly the families of the Chibok girls is commendable.”

 The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was the chairman of the occasion, also failed to announce his donation.

 Tinubu, who was represented by his wife, Oluremi, however, commended Mrs. Buhari for her decision to invest the proceeds in charity.

 On the importance of the book, the APC leader said Nigeria and Nigerians needed to begin to pay attention to beauty industry which he said was capable of generating income and employment.

 He also stressed the need to set up beauty and therapy schools where interested persons would be properly trained.

 The book presenter, Senator Daisy Danjuma, also failed to make her donation public.

 She however commended Mrs. Buhari for writing the book.

 The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who spoke on behalf of the 36 state governors, also followed the same line.

Although, he promised that state governors would make the books available to all the local government areas in the country, he did not announce how much they would pay.

Others who spoke but failed to announce their donations were the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Dr. Musa’udu Kazaure; the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Abdusalami Nasidi; and the wife of Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Zainab Bagudu.

Why Buhari Is Yet To Disclose Recovered Loots- Aide

The presidency has said monies recovered from corrupt government officials and their accomplices cannot be made public now because they are to be used as evidence against the looters during prosecution.

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media to the President, Malam Garba Shehu, who disclosed this to journalists in Abuja at the weekend said the recovered funds, which he noted was running into billions of naira, have been kept in a special account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Shehu said the delay in making public what has been recovered was engendered by the need to ensure that those who stole public funds are made to face the wrath of the law.

His words: “On the issue of how much has been returned, let me state that the money so far retrieved is money to be used as evidence in court, and this is in line with the position of President Muhammadu Buhari who said two things; we will recover and we will prosecute. So as it is now, you don’t go and bring out all these millions returned. I am aware that there is an account in the CBN where some of these funds are being kept, but they are evidences for a judge to see, they are not for public display. I think that is the challenge we have at the moment.”

Assuring Nigerians yearning for employment opportunities that the good times are around the corner with the passage of the budget, Shehu said Buhari-led administration was living up to its campaign promises to Nigerians.

He disclosed that Vice President Yemi Osibajo would soon begin a town hall meeting which would accord him the opportunity to educate Nigerians on the policies of the current administration. “I want to congratulate Nigerians for supporting the administration and especially, during the period most people consider to be a difficult one. A lot of people had expected jobs by way of key appointments in boards, ministries and the parastatals and so on, that have been held back by the fact that the president has promised a major restructuring of the executive arm of the government, including the reduction of ministries from 42 to about 24. That will not go without concomitant challenges on the existing parastatals and agencies of government, which obviously have to be modified to fit into the existing ministerial structure.

“Also, I congratulate Nigerians on the achievements the President has recorded fighting Boko Haram terrorism. The military has said its technical victory. I think that as citizens of this country, we must be able to say something and defend that, this is well beyond technical victory; no city in the country is under curfew now, all military roadblocks have been removed except when they are necessitated by a crime situation and people are freely moving, and normal life is been restored to the Northeast geo- political zone.”

Why We Are Yet To Disclose Details Of Corrupt Officials Returning Stolen Funds- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday explained why his administration was yet to release names of corrupt former officials of the past administration who voluntarily surrendered their loot.

Speaking in Abuja at this year’s edition of the annual Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation Lecture, President Buhari said “any disclosure now may jeopardize the possibility of bigger recoveries”.

Mr. Buhari said, “As I stated recently, a good number of people who abused their positions are voluntarily returning the illicit funds. I have heard it said that we should disclose the names of the people, and the amount returned.

“Yes, in due course, the Central Bank of Nigeria will make information available to the public on the surrendered funds, but I must remark that it is yet early days, and any disclosure now may jeopardize the possibility of bigger recoveries.

“But we owe Nigerians adequate information, and it shall come in due course. It is part of the collective effort to change our land from the bastion of corruption it currently is, to a place of probity and transparency.”

Code Of Conduct Bureau Chair Refuses To Disclose Own Assets

The Code of Conduct Bureau has said that assets declared by public officers would not be available for public inspection.

In a response to the Advocate for Peoples Rights and Justice, the CCB said that assets declarations by public officers contain personal information ?that fall within the exemptions of the Freedom of Information Act.

The advocacy group had filed an FOI request demanding the assets declaration forms of the heads of both the CCB; the Code of Conduct Tribunal; and Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State (while he was the FCT minister).

“This is to ensure the citizens’ right to know, in line with your fight against corruption,” the group stated in a letter dated September 28 and signed by Victor Giwa, its National Coordinator.

The request came a week after the CCB slammed? a 13-count charge of false asset declaration and corruption against? Bukola Saraki, the Senate President.

The ?b?ureau accused Mr. Saraki? of offences ranging from anticipatory declaration of assets to failing to declare some assets – which were beyond his legitimate earning – he acquired while in office as governor.

Bullet Proof Cars: Court Orders First Bank To Disclose Loan Details To NCAA

Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court, Lagos on Tuesday ordered First Bank of Nigeria Plc., to disclose details of a loan facility it granted to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, over alleged purchase of some bullet proof cars.

The court also gave an order of mandamus compelling First Bank to grant access to or make available to Enough Is Enough, EIE, Nigeria, the information it requested, in a letter dated October 30, 2013.

The judge issued the order while delivering judgment in a suit instituted by EIE Nigeria against the bank over its refusal to disclose the information to the organisation.
