Man Arrested For Impersonating Movie Star, Defrauding Fans

A 23-year-old man, Sylvester Onakpobe, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly impersonating a Nollywood actor, Michael Ifeanyi, on social media and defrauding his fans.

The suspect was nabbed by operatives attached to the Maroko Division in Victoria Island following a petition filed by the action on August 17.

He was alleged to have used the actor’s name and photograph on Facebook to collect huge sum of money from unsuspecting persons under the guise of organising a film festival.

It was gathered that the suspect was trailed and arrested while on the verge of collecting N3.5million from one of the actor’s fans who resides in France.

Confirming the arrest, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the suspect confessed to the crime, adding that he was part of a syndicate.

“Effort is on to arrest other members of the syndicate. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO, Abdulmajid Isah, to charge the suspect to court.

“He also warned all internet fraudsters that the command will do everything possible to stop their nefarious activities and ensure diligent prosecutions of the arrested ones,” she said.

Supervisory Councillor, Another Arrested For Allegedly Defrauding Teachers

Crack police detectives have arrested the Supervisory Councillor for Finance and Education, Sapele Local Government, Mr. Eric Ojuromu, and the Special Adviser to the Sapele Local Government Chairman, Joseph Okpereogho, for allegedly defrauding some primary school teachers from the council area through a fake screening exercise.

Ojuromu and Okpereogho, it was gathered, were allegedly caught in the act and arrested on Tuesday morning in the council premises by men of the State Police command and were immediately taken to Asaba where they are currently being detained.

Security sources disclosed that they were alleged to be counting to confirm the sum of N500,000 brought by one of the primary school teachers (name withheld) from Okotie-Eboh Primary School, Sapele, when the police swooped on them.

It was gathered that Ojuromu allegedly embarked on the fraudulent screening exercise by telling some of the primary school teachers, who are being owed months salary arrears, that they have fake certificates and allegedly demanded for varied amounts of money to cover for them without verification by the issuing authorities.

It was learnt that most of the victims of Ojuromu, though have genuine certificates but were afraid to confront him.

Lawyer Arrested For Defrauding FG Of N928 Million

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has said it arrested a lawyer, Mr Adeola Adeyanju, for allegedly defrauding the Federal Government of N928 million.

The commission made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lagos in its recent in-house news bulletin.

The bulletin said that the suspect allegedly forged the payment mandate of the Ministry of Environment.

The commission, according to the bulletin, alleged that the suspect moved the said amount from First City Monument Bank where the money had been domiciled with his Zenith Bank’s personal account.

“On the same day the money hit his account, he again moved it to a Bureau de Change’s account where the money was converted and paid to him in dollars,’’ it said.
