Lagos Urges Residents To Volunteer Information To Security Agencies To Combat Crime?

The Lagos State Government yesterday reassured residents of its ability to combat all forms of crime within the state just as it reaffirmed its commitment to prompt response to all crime incidents reported by residents to the various security agencies.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities and Communication, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, spoke at the monthly interactive session held at Ikorodu with the theme ‘Securing our Communities’ organised by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs for Community Development Committees (CDCs), Neighbourhood Watch, Community Development Associations and other relevant stakeholders.

In a statement, Bamigbetan urged residents not to hide any vital information on crimes from security agencies, saying that, “information gathering is an integral part of securing the environment as it is fuel on which both offensive and defensive operations are based.? “If proactive information intelligence is not provided to security agencies about a threat, the threat will eventually manifest,’’ he said. He said that the state government has provided enough equipment and resources, human and materials, to wipe out criminality in the entire state and is exploring ways to foster a structured relationship with all informal security agencies with a vision to holistically and collectively combating crime in the state.

He assured Ikorodu residents that the state government had zero tolerance for crime, be it kidnapping, stealing, and other criminal acts, urging them to remain calm as the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) was on top of the security challenges being faced at present.

“Lagos State Government has established a RRS Marine Police and is now working with the Naval authorities to ensure that the creeks are taken care of; monitoring and surveillance of these areas has increased and Lagos State is contributing its own quota to ensure that both the marine police and naval authorities are able to respond to challenges facing our creeks,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Sole Administrator, Ikorodu Local council, Gbolahan Ogunleye, earlier in his address assured all the security agencies in Ikorodu Division of his administration’s support in ensuring that operations are carried out judiciously, adding “security is everybody’s business and we all need to work hard to ensure a crime free society.”

In his own contribution, representative of the State Security Service, Ikorodu Division, Mr. Funsho Adeleke, implored residents not to leave security issues to government alone because people in the neighbourhood have vital information about those who reside in their various localities.

Adeleke, therefore, urged all residents in Ikorodu to volunteer vital and useful information that will be helpful to the office of the State Security Services in ensuring that all areas of the state are safe and secured.

Special Forces Begin Exercise For Combat In Niger Delta- Army

Prospects of a confrontation between Niger Delta militants and the military heightened yesterday as the Nigerian Army announced that its Special Forces had started exercises in preparation for combat in the restive oil rich region.

The Army in a statement by its Director of Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, said it had started conducting exercises for its Special Forces on maritime warfare. “The Nigerian Army will from this weekend commence another training exercise code named ‘Exercise Crocodile Smile’ in 82 Division and part of 2 Division areas of responsibility traversing the South-south geo-political region,” he said.

But Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson wednesday met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja and said force was not the solution to the problem that had massively constrained the country’s crude oil production output.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, had warned last week that if the militants failed to accept the federal government’s offer of dialogue over their grievances, the military would have to step in to protect the nation’s oil and gas assets that had been the target of a militant group, Niger Delta Avengers’ (NDA) consistent acts of sabotage.

The federal government’s strategy for dialogue would appear to be experiencing some hiccups as the main militant group, the Avengers, has consistently expressed reservations about the sincerity of the process even as some other stakeholders query the government’s option of using proxy for the proposed talks.

Obviously not wanting to be caught unawares, the Nigerian Army has started preparing for a possible confrontation with the militants, conducting exercises for its Special Forces on maritime warfare.

Army Inducts Combat Motorbike Battalion Into Fight Against Boko Haram

The Army has inducted a combat motorbike battalion at the Headquarters of 25 Task Force Brigade, Damboa, Borno State.

It also launched the second set of 100 wanted suspected Boko Haram terrorists.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai, while inducting the unit stated that the essence of the battalion is to open and secure motorways from various towns to and fro Maiduguri and other parts of Yobe State.

Prior to the induction and launching ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff addressed troops located at Delwa and Bulabulin before arriving Damboa where he inspected a Quarter guard at the Brigade’s headquarters.

Thereafter, he was briefed by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Lawrence Adeleke Araba, who showed him some weapons, vehicles and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) making machines and equipment the formation recovered when they cleared Boko Haram terrorists camps at Talala and Ajingin.

The Commander, 7 Division Garrison, Colonel Solomon Babatunde Kumapayi, also showed the COAS vehicles, weapons and Improvised Explosives Making Devices (IEDs) his formation recovered from the terrorists at Kotokuma on Friday.

Inducting the combat motorbike unit, the Chief of Army Staff said the battalion will serve as a force multiplier in the clearance operations of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists. He said with the induction of the unit, troops presence will be available along the roads thus keeping the roads open and safe.

100 Local Hunters Volunteer To Support Military Combat Boko Haram

About 100 local hunters from Kaduna State have expressed readiness to join in the war against Boko Haram in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The hunters said they are ever ready to bring the activities of Boko Haram to an end by December ending.

Addressing newsmen in Kaduna, the head of the local hunters, Alh Shehu Musa Al-Jan disclosed that about 100 local hunters have declared their interest to go to Maiduguri and fight the dreaded Boko Haram.

According to him, the hunters were aware of the December deadline given to the military authorities by President Muhammad Buhari, saying that, ‘‘we are ready to go and fight the insurgents to a standstill.’’

Al-Jan remarked that the fight against the Boko Haram was a call to duty, adding that, ‘‘the military alone cannot end the psychological war. We want to go there and assist them, we are not joking.’’

‘We have contacted our members across the Northern region and we know who and who are ready. We just want an invitation from the government, and we will land in Maiduguri without delay.’

‘We are ashamed of ourselves and inspite of the fact that we have brave and courageous men in the region, we cannot fold our hands and continue to see the senseless killing of our brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and wives by this blood thirsty and heartless men[Boko Haram].”

SON, CBN, Customs Integrate To Combat Substandard Goods

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have commenced an online data sharing initiative to check the influx of substandard goods in the country.

The move, which would be implemented through SON’s e-certificate platform, would see the agencies collaborating and integrating SON’s e-certificate into the Nigeria Integrated Customs Information System (NICIS).

Under the arrangement, SON’s e-product certificate and SONCAP certificate will now be tied to the relevant processes for the generation of form M and generation of PAAR for clearance of goods at the port.

Commission To Deploy 8,700 Troops To Crush Boko Haram

Member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission are to deploy 8,700 troops to stem the activities of Boko Haram insurgents in the region.

Director of Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, said in statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday that the decision arose from a Meeting of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Ndjamena, Chad, recently to finalise arrangements for the deployment.

It said resolutions from the meeting reinforced President Muhammadu Buhari’s earlier directive to his security chiefs to end the insurgency in three months.

The statement said Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, led other defence chiefs to the meeting aimed at eliminating insurgency in the region.

“Olonisakin visited Chad Republic where he joined other regional military chiefs to deliberate on agreement to accelerate the deployment of the 8,700 strong force.

“The Chiefs of Defence Staff from the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), member countries met in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad Republic and finalised details of deployment of the joint force.

“Gen. Olonisakin has been working round the clock towards actualising the presidential directive to end Boko Haram terrorist activities within three months.”

Army To Establish Motorcycle Battalion To Combat Terrorism

The Nigerian Army is considering setting up of a special force that will use motorcycles to check the activities of terrorists. The new battalion, when established will complement efforts of the ground troops.

It has been learnt that the Motorcycle Battalion will be a special unit out of the initiative of the army chief, Major General Tukur Buratai, in his efforts to wipe out Boko Haram within the shortest possible time.

Reports say that the new military high command brought up the idea as it had become evident that troops were finding it difficult to penetrate terrorists’ hideouts using military vehicles, especially in the dreaded Sambisa Forest.

Reports point that it is difficult pursuing the terrorists in some parts of the North East as a result of the topography being a muddy area and this hinders the movement of the troops.

The troops in this contemplated motorcycle unit would be selected for training in the use of customized bikes and they will now be playing complementary roles to the ground troops.
