Osinbajo Meets With APC Governors, NA Leadership On FG Appointments

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo monday met with Senate President Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and five governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) behind closed doors at the State House, Abuja, to resolve the rising discontent among APC governors and other stakeholders over the absence of consultations by President Muhammadu Buhari in his federal appointments.

The governors who attended the meeting were Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, Sanni Bello of Niger State, and Jibril Bindow of Adamawa. Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola arrived after the meeting had been concluded.
Also in attendance were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David, and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

Although there was no official statement from the presidency on the two-hour meeting, it was gathered that Buhari who departed the country for Morocco yesterday, had mandated his deputy to meet with the National Assembly leadership and the governors to allay concerns and hold talks with them, after mounting complaints that they had not been carried along on several of the federal appointments previously made by the president.

Feelers from the meeting heightened the suspicion that all may not be well among the front line leaders of the ruling party, as the meeting was said to have been very heated.

Sources  said that the meeting was essentially a meeting involving the governors representing the five geopolitical zones in the country and that Osinbajo had been mandated by Buhari to broaden the scope of consultations by bringing in the governors and National Assembly leaders who had been feeling disenfranchised since the outset of the administration.

Since the APC has no governor in the South-south zone, there was no governor to represent the zone at the meeting.

During the meeting, presidency sources said the issue of board appointments to federal parastatals and ambassadorial nominees was discussed, and the governors made their feelings abundantly clear that they were not happy that they had been shut out in past appointments made by the Buhari administration.

Also, the sources said party unity and the state of the party was emphasised by the vice-president against the backdrop of deepening cracks in the APC.

After airing their grievances, it was agreed that a committee head by the SGF, which had recently drawn up a list of nominees to the boards of federal parastatals, would be reviewed by the governors.

What Buhari, APC Governors Discussed In Closed Door Meeting (SEE PHOTOS)

The All Progressives Congress on Monday said the lingering economic crisis in the country should no longer be blamed on the 16-year streak of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The party said it could no longer continue to blame past administrations for the enormous hardship Nigerians are grappling with.

The party’s new position was disclosed by the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, when he briefed reporters shortly after he and other APC governors met with President Muhammadu Buhari in the State House on Monday afternoon.

“We must take responsibility and we must never shift the responsibility to anybody,” Mr. Okorocha said. “We are responsible for everything happening in Nigeria.”

“The good, the bad, the ugly but we are promising Nigerians that we shall fix it,” Mr. Okorocha said.

The admission followed months of stern denial from the leadership of the APC and the Buhari administration, who maintained that Nigerians should direct their anger towards the PDP.

Between mid-August and early September, the APC joined issues with the PDP for the latter’s role in bringing Nigeria to its current unbearable state.

The party’s chairman, John Oyegun, admonished the PDP to desist from commenting about economic matters, saying the party should apologise for its 16-year rule instead.

“It was stomach-churning and downright immoral for the ruinous PDP, which has yet to show remorse or exhibit any form of penitence for presiding over the mindless looting of the nation’s treasury, to now put itself up as the saviour of Nigerians,” Mr. Oyegun said in an August 22 statement.

Mr. Oyegun reiterated his position on September 5, a week after the country officially plunged into recession.

Barely a week later on September 22,President Buhari again blamed the PDP for ruining the economy.

“After 16 years of PDP regime, there was no power supply, no much infrastructure, no rail and no security; this is what it left for us,’’ Mr. Buhari said.

But Mr. Okorocha, who is also the chairman of APC Governors’ Forum, said the party had now recognised that Nigerians are experiencing untold economic pains and his party had commenced initiatives that would address them.

“We share the pains of Nigerians, every human being must feel it,” Mr. Okorocha said. “We also feel what they are going through but we are asking for a little patience let us do things the right way and do it once and for all.”

We Will Not Intervene In The Budget Padding Scandal – APC Governors

The governors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have said they would not intervene in the current budget-padding scandal rocking the House of Representatives.

The governors had last week met President Muhammadu Buhari and obtained permission from the president to mediate in the crisis.

Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State stated this during a chat with journalists in Abuja.

“I assure you that we are not going to delve into cases that are before the courts or tribunal. We are not going to delve into the current issue of the moment. We are only going to touch on the political issues pertaining to the National Assembly.

“What is before the court, those of us who are lawyers, know that it is subjudice and the current issue is just coming up and it is not politics.

“As far as I am concerned, if any proof is found to any of the allegations, these are criminal offences. So, there is no way any committee of governors can delve into that, I assure you,” he stated.
