Agency Says Violation Of Environmental Laws, Greed Responsible For Flooding

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) says distortions of town planning guidelines and disregard for environmental laws are responsible for floods and environmental challenges in the country.

NIHSA’s Director-General, Mr Moses Beckley, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

“There are environmental laws and there are also town planning guidelines and restrictions.“In other words, for any town, for any place there are guidelines as to where you should construct, build or erect anything or where you should not.

“Of course there are places that are meant for building the house.

“But in a situation whereby people now disregard such restrictions and then build in the areas where they shouldn’t build, then they are looking for trouble.

“Who is to blame?

“I was in Zaria and I discovered that the river channels were tampered with, therefore, reducing the flow of the river.

“Consequently, that had a flash back which eventually flooded on the environment and affected the people staying in that environment.

“Unfortunately, most of our people tend to do these things deliberately in order to attract relief, rights, financial relief and that shouldn’t be the case, especially in these days where you have resources dwindling.

“Such release does not come regularly and then what happens to all the properties destroyed and sometime if live lost, how do you replace, so we need to be wiser and do the needful.’’

Monies Collected From Dasuki By Dokpesi, Bafarawa, Others, Not For Arms Purchase– Agency

PRNigeria, an agency which distributes press statements for organisations and individuals in Nigeria, has said that contrary to public perception, not all funds disbursed from the office of the National Securty Adviser, ONSA are meant for arms procurement.

The firm in a statement Thursday denied that former NSA, Sambo Dasuki implicated some past governors and officials of the Peoples Democratic Party.

It also said “not all funds in Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) are related to arm procurement as being alleged.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes, EFCC, is presently investigating how over $2.2 billion meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition for Nigerian armed forces were allegedly diverted for political and other purposes.

The investigation is the outcome of a presidential investigation committee, which has now indicted a lot of officials within and outside the ONSA.

President Muhammadu had on receipt of the interim report of the committee directed that all those indicted in the report be arrested.

EFCC so far have in detention the former NSA, Dasuki, and former Minister of state for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, owner of AIT/Raypower, Raymond Dokpesi as well as a former governor of Sokoto state, Attahiru Bafarawa.

Others in detention include the son of Mr. Bafarawa, Sagir Bafarawa, and that of a former Minister of Defence, Bello Mohammed, Abba Mohammed.

Agency Cautions Complacency After Rescue In Sambisa

A United Nations entity said while the rescue of women and children from the Boko Haram was welcome, this should not get the country carried away to the extent of the ongoing violations against these vulnerable members of the community.

“The release of women and children held captive by Boko Haram in Nigeria is welcome news, yet we mustn’t forget that women and children bear the brunt of this relentless violence in neighbouring countries as well,” said Denise Brown, WFP Regional Director for West Africa.

She said the women and children were vulnerable to impending hunger. “Women displaced by conflict have lost their husbands, walked for days to safety and rely on the support of already vulnerable communities. The lean season is upon us, and as local granaries are emptying, women tell of their families going hungry,” Brown added.

Brown’s sentiments come in the wake of the military rescuing hundreds of women and children from the Sambisa Forest, a stronghold of the Boko Haram terrorists.
