Court grants Abba Moro permission to travel abroad for treatment

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday granted former Interior Minister, Abba Moro, permission to travel abroad for medical checkup.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that Mr. Moro was granted similar permission on July 14, 2016 to travel for medical treatment.

The former minister is standing trial over alleged N676 million Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment scam.

When the matter was called up for hearing, counsel to Mr. Moro, Akinlolu Kehinde, told the court that the application for leave to travel again was to follow up on the earlier treatment.

“There is an urgent need for him to go for a follow up checkup on his health as he was given an appointment for April 26.”

Mr. Kehinde said to achieve this, his client was praying the court for an order permitting him to travel to Dubai for three weeks and an order directing the release of his international passport.

The lawyer said that he attached a 24- paragraph affidavit in support of his application.

He said that the last time the court granted his client leave to travel, he promptly returned to face his trial on completion of his treatment.

Although the prosecuting counsel, Steven Odiase, did not oppose the application, he urged the court to attach conditions since Mr. Moro was granted bail on own recognisance.

The judge, Nnamdi Dimgba, granted Mr. Moro the permission to travel, but ordered him to provide a letter of undertaken from a surety with landed property in Abuja.

Alternatively, the court asked his counsel to guarantee him that he would come back to face his trial.

“I am disposed to granting the application in favour of the applicant because the reason is a follow up to the earlier treatment.

“However, considering the concerns raised by the complainant, I will impose some conditions,” Mr. Dimgba said.

He adjourned the case till May 18 and 19 for resumption of trial.

Mr. Moro alongside two others are on trial over alleged N676 million Nigeria Immigration 2014 recruitment fraud.

Immigration Recruitment Scam: Court adjourns ex-Minister Abba Moro’s trial.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed February 7 for continuation of cross-examination of prosecution witness, Tabugn Sylvanus, in the on-going trial of former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, and three others over recruitment fraud.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba adjourned the matter to enable the prosecution produce a letter allegedly written by Drexel Nigeria Ltd, one of the defendants.

The said letter was written to the Board of the Nigeria Immigration Service for conduct of the botch 2014 recruitment.

The defence counsel, Paul Erokoro, requested the letter to enable him carry out a proper cross-examination on the witness.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the NIS conducted recruitment on March 15, 2014, that led to the death of 15 applicants, while several others were wounded.

The Federal Government docked Mr. Moro over alleged N676 million recruitment fraud.

Others charged along with him are the former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Anastacia Nwobia and a Deputy Director in the ministry, F.O. Alayabami.

At the last adjourned date, a former Controller-General of the Service, David Paradang, told the court that he was not aware of the 2014 recruitment.

Mr. Paradang was Controller-General between June 2013 and August 2015.

Jonathan is one of the greatest presidents Nigeria ever produced – Abba Moro

Former Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, has described the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan as one of the greatest Presidents Nigeria has ever produced.

In a statement he personally signed, Morro said Jonathan was a great leader, who contributed in no small measure to the advancement and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria and Africa.

Felicitating with the former President on his 59th birthday, the Benue-born grassroots politician said Jonathan recorded tremendous achievements as President through his transformation agenda.

He recalled how the former President created a solid foundation in the country’s electoral system by conceding defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

The ex-Minister further noted that the current clamour and appeal by Nigerians for the return of Jonathan to power, was an indication that the people have come to realize their mistake in voting him out in 2015, despite efforts he was making to take Nigeria to the ‘promised’ land.

According to Moro, “Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a great icon and hero of democracy in Nigeria, Africa and the entire world. He subordinated personal interest to the national interest when, even before the votes for the presidential election were tallied, for the first time in the history of democracy in Nigeria, called his challenger, General Muhammadu Buhari to concede defeat.

“This doused the pent-up tension and shamed the West’s orchestrated prophecy of Armageddon and the disintegration of Nigeria. By this singular act of statesmanship, a rare political demonstration in Africa, indeed the world, President Jonathan stabilized the polity and ensured a smooth transition of power, again for the first time in the history of democracy in Nigeria from the candidate of the ruling party to the candidate of the opposition party.

“By putting in place a platform of credible, free, fair and transparent elections, Jonathan laid the foundation for sustaining and deepening democracy in Nigeria.

“Today, he remains one of the greatest presidents ever produced by Nigeria since the country’s attainment of Independence in 1960.

“Congratulations to a worthy Nigerian symbol of democracy at 59; a man who via good governance and sterling leadership style brought Nigeria to the path of glory and made significant impact in the lives of the Nigerian people. ”

How Abba Moro, Others Cut Cost Causing NIS Recruitment Tragedy– Witness

Despite raking in about N1 billion from sale of forms, only N45 million was released for the conduct of the tragic 2014 immigration recruitment exercise, a witness told the court on Friday

Tabugn Sylvanus, a retired Director and Secretary of the Board of the National Immigration Service, NIS, said N201 million was actually required for a proper conduct of the exercise.

Mr. Sylvanus also told the Federal High Court that a last minute adjustment made to the recruitment exercise moved the number of expected participants at the Abuja test venue from 6,800 to over 66,000.

Mr. Sylvanus is the second persecution witness to testify in court during the ongoing trial of former Interior Minister, Abba Moro.

Mr. Moro, who was also the chairman of the board of the NIS, is accused of defrauding hundreds of thousands of job seekers, who paid N1,000 each for the recruitment test.

Despite raising about a billion naira from the job seekers, the tests were poorly organised at different centres across the country, resulting in deadly stampedes with at least 18 deaths confirmed, majority from the Abuja stadium stampede.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said part of the proceeds of the recruitment fees was used to buy choice property in Abuja.

NIS Scandal: We will invoke ‘Alekwu’ gods on Abba Moro’s Persecutors – Idoma Group

A group under the aegis of Okela Kach’Idoma has threatened to invoke the gods of the land, ‘Alekwu’ on anyone behind the prosecution of their son and former minister of Interior, Abba Moro.

Moro is currently facing trial alongside three others on an 11-count charge bordering on procurement fraud and money laundering over the failed 2014 Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise.
The group said the prosecution was politically motivated just to rubbish the image of the son, Moro.
Addressing newsmen Thursday in Otukpo, the national president of Okela Kach’Idoma, Gabriel Adejor Ogidi, said the people of the Idoma community were not happy with the way Moro was being rubbished in the media.

Accroding to Ogidi, Moro, who is happily married with children, would not set out to organize any exercise that would lead to the death of other people’s children.

The group also faulted the earlier claim by the Comptroller- General of Immigration and Principal Witness (PW1) to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),Mr. David Paradang that he was not a member of the Steering Committee which conducted the ill-fated recruitment exercise.

“How is that possible? Paradang was in charge of Immigration during the recruitment exercise and as such he cannot deny knowledge of the entire process.
“Now the truth is out. It has been discovered that the former Immigration Boss was actually a Member of the Steering Committee which conducted the ill-fated recruitment exercise. Who is lying now?

“The truth is that he is being used to pull Moro down. The whole drama is staged just to tarnish the image of our son and we will not hesitate invoke the wrath of Alekwu K’Idoma on anyone trying to persecute Comrade Moro,” Ogidi said.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to allow his good image and that of his administration, which he had built for years to be rubbished by some persons he tagged enemies of progress.

“We are calling on the peoples’ president, Muhammadu Buhari to intervene into the case in order not to allow his reputation and that of his government be dragged into the mud,” he added.

Former Minister, Abba Moro Granted Bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro and two others accused of defrauding graduate applicants to the tune of N675m in the March 15, 2014 National Immigration Services recruitment exercise.

Justice Anwuli Chikere granted bail to Moro on self-recognition, but imposed on the two others, bail sum of N100m each with one surety in like sum.

All the accused persons including Moro are, however, to deposit their passports and other travel documents with the court registrar throughout the period of their trial.

The other accused persons, who were granted bail, are a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel-Nwobia?, and former director in the ministry, Mr. F.O Alayebami.

Moro, Daniel-Nwobia and Alayebami? were on Monday arraigned along with the firm contracted to execute the recruitment exercise, Drexel Tech Nigeria Ltd.

The prosecution said one of the suspect, Mahmood Ahmadu, who was also involved in the alleged scam was on the run.

Shortly after they pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday, Justice Chikere had remanded Moro and Alayebami in prison pending the hearing and determination of their bail applications.

The judge had on the other hand, allowed Daniel-Nwobia to continue enjoying the administrative bail earlier granted to her by the EFCC.

Moro and Alayebami were, however, ordered to remain in prison until they would be able to meet the bail conditions.

Court Sends Abba Moro Back To Kuje Prison, Adjorns Bail Application

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday sent former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro back to Kuje prison, having adjourned the consideration of his application for bail till tomorrow, Thursday.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had on Monday arraigned Moro alongside a former Director in the Ministry, F.O. Alayebami and former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Anastasia Daniel Nwobia on an 11 count charge bordering on complicity in a N676m immigration recruitment scam.

The presiding judge, Justice Anwuli Chikere had, during the last sitting of the court, remanded Moro in Prison pending the consideration of his application for bail, while the 2nd defendant, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel-Nwobia, was granted administrative bail on the ground that she is currently nursing a baby. The case was then adjourned to today, Wednesday.

In her ruling on Wednesday, Justice Chekere held that Moro and the former Deputy Director in the Ministry, F.O.Alayebami be sent back to Kuje prison while Daniel-Nwobia remain on the administrative bail the court earlier granted her.

EFCC Arrests Ex-Minister, Abba Moro, Others Over 2014 Immigration Recruitment Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arrested a former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, over the Nigerian Immigration recruitment scam in which no fewer than 20 job seekers died.

Also arrested by the anti-graft agency were former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Anaesthesia Nwaobia, and a deputy director who allegedly facilitated the scam.

A source at the commission, who cannot be named because she is not authorised to speak on the matter, said the three suspects were picked up in the evening.

“They were brought into the commission’s headquarters today and will be arraigned on a 12-count charge in the Federal High Court Abuja on Tuesday,” the source said.

Some of the charges against Mr. Moro and his colleagues include obtaining by false pretence, procurement offences, corrupt practices and money laundering.

At least nine job seekers died on March 15, 2014 at the Abuja National Stadium while scrambling to secure seats for a recruitment test into the Nigerian Immigration Service.
?
The stampede ensued after the over 200,000 job seekers scrambled through a poorly organized barricade at the stadium.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, four applicants died from the stampede while 12 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Rivers government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital.

EFCC Arrests, Quizzes Abba Moro Over NIS Job Scandal

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are reportedly currently interrogating former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, over the Saturday, March 15, 2014 job test scandal in the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

The scandal, which led to the death of about 20 applicants in various recruitment centres across the country, involved over 520,000 Nigerian graduate applicants who paid N1, 000 each to be qualified to take the test.

The NIS under Moro generated a tune of N520 million from the job test.

After the NIS tragedy, several Nigerians demanded the resignation or dismissal of Mr. Moro and the then Comptroller-General of Immigration, David Parradang, as well as their criminal prosecution for involuntary homicide.

Sources said the anti-graft had quizzed the ex-Comptroller-General of the NIS, Parradang on the same matter.

An official of the EFCC who confirmed the arrest of Mr. Moro said a team of investigators have already begun interrogating him.

Another EFCC official said: “It will be a deservice, to sweep under the carpet, the job scandal allegation against the former Minister, which led to the death of innocent job seekers. So, operatives have to invite him for interrogation.”

Abba Moro Sued By ICT Firm, Claims N350m Damages

Former Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, has been dragged before a Benue State High Court, sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, by Bosmos Infotech Limited, claiming the sum of N350 million as damages for false, wicked and malicious defamation to tarnish its hard earned reputation.

Counsel to the plaintiff, Barr Ocha Ulegede and Co, who instituted the legal action for his client following public declaration by the former minister that Bosmos Infotech Limited, during the ill fated Immigration Service recruitment exercise went through the ministerial tenders’ board, but upon investigation it was not registered to recruit along with three other companies.

He revealed that to the bewilderment of his client’s imagination Bosmos Infotech Limited has at no point sought for any bidding; talk less of tendering any proposal to engage in any recruitment transaction whatsoever.

The Men And Women Who Really Failed Goodluck Jonathan By Bello Imam

In the next few days, Goodluck Jonathan will hand over the nation’s mantle of leadership to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari. The five-year tenure of the President was topsy-turvy because of the motley crowd in his cabinet. In this piece, The Nation’s BELLO IMAM takes a look at cabinet members who actually failed to deliver, which later rubbed off on Jonathan as he lost the goodwill of Nigerians.

The reality of leaving the posh Aso Rock Presidential Villa has finally dawned on President Goodluck Jonathan…

Before stepping aside, the President has spent the past few days on retrospection climaxing in an emotional thanksgiving service last Sunday at the Presidential Villa chapel. A penitent Jonathan asked for forgiveness and specifically admitted that “we should not have done certain things we did.” In a rare spirit of sportsmanship, Jonathan decided to bear the liabilities of his administration, some of which he never knew; some he inadvertently ignored; and some he did not imagine could cost him a return ticket to office.

While the President recedes into a solitary retirement, having been abandoned by some friends and associates, the activities of some of his cabinet members remain in the realm of public discourse on how they failed Jonathan. Jonathan’s troubled mandate has led to a $60billion debt for his successor, Muhammadu Buhari. It is inconceivable in Nigeria’s history that the nation will run into another debt trap because his predecessors, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, left the economy in a stable condition. While Obasanjo secured debt relief for the nation, Yar’Adua left about $40billion in foreign reserve. Yet, some members of Jonathan’s team failed him. These powerful cabinet members wore a larger-than-life image and were actually untouchable. More importantly, their latitude placed the majority in servitude.

Namadi Sambo
Constitutionally, Vice President Namadi ought to be the coordinator of the nation’s economy but he was technically denied the opportunity by his boss. He was, however, in charge of the National Economic Council, the management of the power sector, the privatisation of government-owned companies, especially the power sector. Although seven new plants have been inaugurated under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs), only 4,700 megawatts will be added to the national grid. Two major challenges affecting the energy sector are poor gas supply and transmission of the megawatts.

Persistent outage nationwide in spite of the over $16billion invested was one of the campaign issues against Jonathan. In fact, Jonathan in 2011 assured the nation that before the end of his tenure, Nigerians would have sold their private and noisy power generators. Instead of fulfilling the promise, most homes, offices, Ministries, Departments and Agencies are in perpetual darkness. The crisis of confidence between the VP and ex-Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, also slowed down progress and almost eroded the little gains made in the sector. Sambo was seen as unfair to the North in the privatisation programme and it was one of the reasons most Northern elite conspired against PDP.

Anyim Pius Anyim
Though the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is an appointee of the President; he is the spirit of the cabinet because of his role as the political guardian angel. Apart from his primary duty of giving the presidency a direction, the SGF is expected to advise the President on the application of the principles of equality and Federal Character in appointments in order to preserve the unity of the country. The outgoing SGF, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, came into the cabinet with a cosmopolitan credential but he has ended as a tribal bigot and a local champion. Worried by the marginalisation of the South-East in the past, Anyim used every opportunity to favour the zone in flagrant violation of Section 14(3) of 1999 Constitution. The section says: “The composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the Federal Character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity…”

Out of 50 key appointments made by President Goodluck Jonathan, the South-West belatedly had three. It was evident that Anyim never forgave his clash with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo when he was the President of the Senate and he went all out to deal with the region. The same neglect of the North-East, North-West and even North-Central accounted for the loss of the presidential election by Jonathan in these four zones. As at the time Jonathan was seeking re-election, he was already wearing a tribal cloak. This reflected in the huge votes he got from the South-East and the South-South on March 28. The President realised the tribal colouration of his administration very late in the day. He sacrificed and attempted to salvage the situation but he could not survive the gang-up by these four zones. Anyim also veered off his mandate by engaging in partisanship with the coordination of the selection of 12 million signatures for the re-election of Jonathan by the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN). Unsuspectingly, the President did not realise that TAN was a deft move by Anyim to escape being purged from the cabinet. He had his cake and ate it but Jonathan was the ultimate loser.

Okonjo-Iweala
The apparent collapse of the economy under the watchful eyes of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, showed that she might have been over-priced or over-rated for the job. The indices have clearly indicated a sick economy but the minister kept on reassuring the nation that it is healthy. The liabilities are as follows: fuel subsidy scandal; outstanding N200billion fuel subsidy; $60billion debt for Buhari administration; the mismanagement of the controversial $20 billion or $1 billion oil cash; borrowing of N473billion to pay salaries; the depletion of Excess Crude Account to a paltry $2billion and arbitrary granting of waivers. Today, annual budget implementation is less than 50 per cent, capital projects are stalled and most states cannot pay salaries to workers. Even Oknokjo-Iweala’s colleagues knew that her economic pill was voodooist. It was in this hard-time circumstance that Jonathan sought the mandate of the electorate who rejected him at the poll. Nigerians voted for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to change the status quo. Notwithstanding her braggadocio, three major newspapers in the country have written editorials to write off Okonjo-Iweala’s so-called performance. In his verdict, a former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, said: “Our public finance is haemorrhaging to the point that estimated over N30 trillion is missing, or stolen or unaccounted for, or simply mismanaged.

“Under you as Minister of Finance and Coordinator for the Economy, the basket of our national treasury is leaking profusely from all sides. Just a few illustrations! First you admit that oil theft has reduced oil output from the average 2.3-2.4million barrels per day (mpd) to 1.95mpd, meaning that at least 350,000 to 450,000 barrels per day are being stolen. On the average of 400,000 per day and the oil prices over the past four years, it comes to about $60billion stolen in just four years.”

Bala Mohammed
About emerging as the worst Minister of Federal Capital Territory since 1975, under Sen. Bala Mohammed’s watch, a less than three to five-kilometre road leading to his office from the NTA axis could not be completed for five years. He was more preoccupied with allocation of plots of land than building on the legacies of his predecessors. Once Bala Mohammed gets praises from the Presidential Villa, he is okay even if the residents are in pain.

He struggled to manage his predecessors’ projects haphazardly. Some of these projects are the Vice President’s residence, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua highway to the airport, Kubwa-Zuba expressway, and Senate President’s and Speaker’s official quarters. A few days ago, Mohammed wanted the President to inaugurate the Umaru Yar’Adua highway when it was obvious that the project (paid for upfront by the administration of the late President) has not been completed. A clever Jonathan said he was only around to inspect the project (not to commission it).

The ‘legacies’ of Bala Mohammed include non-functional street lights, decrepit six districts in the FCT, high rate of crimes, general insecurity, dysfunctional CCTV, dilapidated school structures, poor waste management system, importation of one-year life span buses for mass transportation.

The inability of Mohammed’s administration to live up to his promise to rehabilitate the UN Building destroyed by Boko Haram and insecurity in Abuja contributed to the erosion of confidence in Jonathan’s administration by some countries like the US, the UK and others.

Diezani Alison-Madueke
Arguably the most powerful minister Nigeria has ever produced, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke presided over the oil sector with such a tight grip as if she is on an everlasting assignment. In the last five years, she has incurred the wrath of the International Oil Companies (IOCs) which are divesting in Nigeria’s oil sector. Some of her defects in office are unending fuel scarcity nationwide; fuel subsidy scam; instability in NNPC having worked with five Group Managing Directors; alleged lavish spending of a whopping N10billion on chartered flights by NNPC for her use and other operations; $20b oil funds unaccounted for; fall in the sale of crude oil; non-passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill(PIB); award of N4billion pipeline contracts to ex-militants and militia leaders; increase in oil theft and lack of accountability.

The oil sectors stank to such extent that an external auditing firm, PWC was commissioned by the presidency to look into the account of the NNPC. Under Diezani, the nation does not know how much oil it is selling, the whereabouts of the proceeds and the accruals from the excess funds gained from crude oil benchmark. The minister by her actions and inactions became a liability to the presidency, to the extent that Jonathan’s government was judged by the rot in the oil sector. Unfortunately, the President could not muster courage to check the perceived excesses of the minister. Nigerians, however, voted out Jonathan on March 28 because they were tired of the story of corruption in the oil sector.

Musiliu Obanikoro
The lousy ex-Minister of Defence, Amb. Musiliu Obanikoro virtually abdicated his constitutional responsibilities and used the influence of his office to embark on ‘Operation Conquer South-West’ for Jonathan. Backed by the Armed Forces and other security agencies, he went about the conquest mission as if there will be no tomorrow. Along the line, he burnt his fingers in Ekiti State where he was accused along with others of engaging military intelligence to rig the governorship poll for Governor Ayo Fayose in 2014. The video of the plot went viral and Obanikoro’s gangster politics was a stigma for Jonathan.

But Jonathan tolerated him because he needed votes from the South-West electorate. Rather than support Jonathan, the sophisticated South-West voters proved a point that the region believes in Omoluabi (a perfect gentlemanly conduct) and not gangster politics. Obanikoro was one of the reasons Jonathan lost South-West and why Lagos State was impenetrable for PDP. When Jonathan realised this, it was too late. The President made Obanikoro a Minister of State for Foreign Affairs to drum a message into his ears that he knew all along that he was not an asset. The ego of Obanikoro was deflated on the date of his swearing in when he was announced as a Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. It took the intervention of some of his colleagues to cheer him up by saying “a minister is a minister.”

Jelili Adesiyan
Twice, the President was shocked that the Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, is a political paper weight. As part of the dummy sold to the President, Adesiyan was touted as a politician who could tackle the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West having been part of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD). Jonathan was oblivious of the fact that Adesiyan’s appointment was used by the lobbyists to shore up his image, which was battered as a result of his arrest over the assassination of the late Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

Since coming on board, Adesiyan attracted more controversy to Jonathan administration with the use of policemen to intimidate political opponents. His impunity reached its peak with an assault on a former Governor of Osun State, Chief Isiaka Adeleke, by his police/security aides. That singular thug-like assault cost the PDP a big loss in Osun State during the governorship, presidential and National Assembly elections. Since the humiliation of PDP, Adesiyan has withdrawn to his shell pretending to be concentrating on a job he has not made any impact since he was appointed.

Abba Moro
The tardiness of the Ministry of Interior, especially the Nigerian Immigration Service, under Abba Moro led to a disastrous recruitment exercise which caused the death of 15 graduates in March 2014. For a year, the administration of Jonathan suffered an image crisis and it could not recover during the poll. The rating of Jonathan fell when he succumbed to pressure from some National Assembly leaders and governors to retain Moro, a former local government chairman who adopted local benchmark in his attitude to issues, including such a recruitment tragedy.

While Jonathan treated Moro with kid gloves, a minister in the same shoes in South Korea resigned from the cabinet. By the time Jonathan came up with N75million compensation for the families of the recruitment scandal on March 15, 2015, it was obvious that it was because of his re-election bid rather than empathy for the deceased. Nigerians voted for change, not the re-election of Jonathan.

Mike Onolememen
In February, the Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen, wasted no time in scoring himself a little below 50 per cent in office. Speaking on a radio programme, he said the Federal Government had completed only 62 out of the 133 projects awarded.

He said: “What is important about all these projects embarked upon by this government is that out of 133 of them awarded by the Jonathan administration, 62 have already been completed and tremendous progress has been made on the rest. When we set out to reposition our roads, we noticed a gap in the funding of road infrastructure in Nigeria. If you merge our requirement, which was an average of about N500billion yearly, against the budgetary provision of about N120billion, it is clear that we needed to do something quick to bridge the gap.”

The reality is that most of the arterial roads in the country are bad; they include Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway; Lagos Ibadan Expressway, Ajebandele-Shagamu Road. Onolememen, in September 2014, assured the nation that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will be completed 18 months earlier than

Chinedu Nebo
The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, is a prayer warrior in the cabinet but the magic wand has not effected any change in the power sector. He does not have the capacity to manage the sector like his predecessor, Prof. Barth Nnaji. The installed capacity of the power sector is now 4,700 megawatts but generation is a little over 2,000megawatts in spite of the privatizsation policy. As at May 19, it was reported by a daily that eight distribution companies have declared force majeure in their operations. Besides the eight, the Bureau of Public Enterprises has engaged in a share buyback deal leading to the payment of N29.2billion to Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Company(IEDM), which is the investor in Yola Electricity Distribution Company.

The situation in the power sector is clumsy, unstable and scaring to investors. The epileptic power supply nationwide worked against Jonathan during the poll.

Aminu Wali
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Aminu Wali, has been running a lack lustre ministry, which has not earned the confidence of the diplomatic community unlike the case when the late charismatic ex-Minister, Olugbenga Ashiru, was in charge. Jonathan’s administration is bowing out with its international reputation at its lowest ebb because there is no effective salesman in charge. This setback was obvious during the last elections when the US and the UK issued a joint statement warning against alleged plans to tamper with the results. The conspiracy was obvious because the foreign affairs policy has been on a wheelchair.

Immigration Employment Saga: Abba Moro Denies Alleged Substitution

The Minister of Interior, Mr Abba Moro, has denied claims that the Ministry substituted the genuine list of victims of the Immigration Recruitment Exercise stampede with strange names.

According to Mr Moro, the said list was compiled by the Presidential Committee that investigated the stampede and had nothing to do with the Ministry .

The Minister added that the names of victims who were not included in the first list are being collated, and they would be forwarded to the committee which is responsible for screening of the victims to ascertain the veracity of their claims.

Mr Moro also assured the victims of the stampede that all those that are proven to be genuine in their claims would be adequately compensated.

President Jonathan had given automatic employment to some unemployed relations of 15 job seekers who lost their lives during the stampede. He said the gesture was not a compensation for the lives lost, but simply to identify with the families of the deceased.
