Ijaw youths attack NIS operatives, seize riffles.

Gunmen suspected to be Ijaw youths from Ogbe-Ijoh community in the Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, on Saturday evening attacked the patrol team of the Nigeria Immigration Service, injuring one and then collected two riffles belonging to the officers.

Our correspondent learnt that an operative of the Marine Police team who rushed to the scene to rescue the officers also sustained a gunshot injury in his hand during the attack which lasted for over 30 minutes at about 6:40pm on Saturday.

The NIS operatives were attacked by the gunmen who chanted in the Ijaw language war songs along the creeks of Fegenegbene community, opposite Ogbe-Ijoh while heading towards the Warri Main Market.

A source attached to the Marine Police Post in Warri said, “If not for the swift intervention of the police, three operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service and a civilian speedboat pilot would have been abducted by the heavily armed men numbering about ten.

It was learnt that the attack was not unconnected with the recent rivalry over the disputed land boundary between Aladja community in Udu Council and Ogbe-Ijoh community in Warri South West Council areas of the state.

One of the victims who spoke under a strict condition of anonymity said, “At about 6:40pm our patrol team was heading towards Warri Main Market when armed youths shot continuously at our boat. They demanded that we follow them after disarming us. They accused us that we were Urhobo people and they will kill us.

“As we were arguing, one of the youths confirmed that our pilot (boat driver) is an Urhobo boy and they wanted to kill him, luckily he jumped into the water. Our team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of the NIS was hit with the butt of their riffle. They also engaged operatives of the Marine Police. One of them was shot in his hand before they fled.”

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Delta State Command of NIS, Joy Obikwe, an Assistant Superintendent, confirmed the incident but said she has not been briefed with details.

NIS urges Plateau residents to report illegal immigrants

Mr Lipdo Nangwang, Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Plateau, has called on Nigerians to promptly report suspicious illegal immigrants and aliens living in their midst to the relevant authorities.

He said in Jos on Friday, that immigrants who do not possess relevant documents were the people usually being used to undertake nefarious activities in the state.

“It is very risky to allow aliens live in your area without reporting them; such persons usually avail themselves for nefarious acts.

“You will observe those who indulge in acts of destruction during crises are usually not from Nigeria.

“Since Nigeria is not their country, they have nothing at stake,” Nangwang said.

He said that if the residents avail the relevant authorities with information on illegal immigrants in their midst, they would be arrested and dealt with appropriately.

He called on illegal immigrants and aliens living in the state to ensure that they get resident permits to enable them go about their businesses without fear of prosecution.

Wike urges NIS to assist ensure expatriates pay tax

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has urged the Nigerian Immigration Service to assist the state with the statistics of the entire expatriates working in the state for effective taxation.

Wike made the remark when he received the Controller of Immigration, Aminu Yarima, who paid him a courtesy call in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

He said the statistics was necessary to ensure that the expatriates did not evade tax.

Wike alleged that most foreign companies in the state deliberately withhold the accurate number of foreigners working with them.
According to him, this makes it difficult for the state Revenue Service to collect the legal taxes.

Wike said: “We need the support of the Nigeria Immigration Service on the number of expatriates working in the state.

“This information is vital to our revenue drive.”

Wike said that a partnership between the NIS and the state Internal Revenue Service would go a long way to improving the state revenue base.

He also urged the NIS to step up security measures to stop suspected terrorist and illegal immigrants from filtering into the state.

According to him, the international nature of terrorism requires the Nigeria Immigration Service to be on top of the situation at all times.

In his remarks, Yarima commended the governor for improving the security in the state.

How Abba Moro, Others Cut Cost Causing NIS Recruitment Tragedy– Witness

Despite raking in about N1 billion from sale of forms, only N45 million was released for the conduct of the tragic 2014 immigration recruitment exercise, a witness told the court on Friday

Tabugn Sylvanus, a retired Director and Secretary of the Board of the National Immigration Service, NIS, said N201 million was actually required for a proper conduct of the exercise.

Mr. Sylvanus also told the Federal High Court that a last minute adjustment made to the recruitment exercise moved the number of expected participants at the Abuja test venue from 6,800 to over 66,000.

Mr. Sylvanus is the second persecution witness to testify in court during the ongoing trial of former Interior Minister, Abba Moro.

Mr. Moro, who was also the chairman of the board of the NIS, is accused of defrauding hundreds of thousands of job seekers, who paid N1,000 each for the recruitment test.

Despite raising about a billion naira from the job seekers, the tests were poorly organised at different centres across the country, resulting in deadly stampedes with at least 18 deaths confirmed, majority from the Abuja stadium stampede.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said part of the proceeds of the recruitment fees was used to buy choice property in Abuja.

NIS Scandal: We will invoke ‘Alekwu’ gods on Abba Moro’s Persecutors – Idoma Group

A group under the aegis of Okela Kach’Idoma has threatened to invoke the gods of the land, ‘Alekwu’ on anyone behind the prosecution of their son and former minister of Interior, Abba Moro.

Moro is currently facing trial alongside three others on an 11-count charge bordering on procurement fraud and money laundering over the failed 2014 Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise.
The group said the prosecution was politically motivated just to rubbish the image of the son, Moro.
Addressing newsmen Thursday in Otukpo, the national president of Okela Kach’Idoma, Gabriel Adejor Ogidi, said the people of the Idoma community were not happy with the way Moro was being rubbished in the media.

Accroding to Ogidi, Moro, who is happily married with children, would not set out to organize any exercise that would lead to the death of other people’s children.

The group also faulted the earlier claim by the Comptroller- General of Immigration and Principal Witness (PW1) to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),Mr. David Paradang that he was not a member of the Steering Committee which conducted the ill-fated recruitment exercise.

“How is that possible? Paradang was in charge of Immigration during the recruitment exercise and as such he cannot deny knowledge of the entire process.
“Now the truth is out. It has been discovered that the former Immigration Boss was actually a Member of the Steering Committee which conducted the ill-fated recruitment exercise. Who is lying now?

“The truth is that he is being used to pull Moro down. The whole drama is staged just to tarnish the image of our son and we will not hesitate invoke the wrath of Alekwu K’Idoma on anyone trying to persecute Comrade Moro,” Ogidi said.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to allow his good image and that of his administration, which he had built for years to be rubbished by some persons he tagged enemies of progress.

“We are calling on the peoples’ president, Muhammadu Buhari to intervene into the case in order not to allow his reputation and that of his government be dragged into the mud,” he added.

#NigeriaImmigration2000: “Reinstate Us”, Expelled Recruits Cry Out For Help.

Months after application, selection, and training of new immigration recruits, 2000 of them are still in a confused state in regards to their position in an ongoing recruitment crisis.

Documents obtained by Omojuwa.com correspondent revealed that 2000 of these new recruits are being dispersed by the Ministry of Interior on the basis of illegality. It is quite worrisome that the same ministry that facilitated the training of the new recruits in a swift and surprising move turned around to rule them illegal.

While majority of the affected recruits have taken to social media to show their grievances, the ministry reiterates its position by not making any move to address the situation.

Despite calling the new recruits illegal, exclusive documents obtained by Omojuwa.com clearly shows that they all underwent a proper screening/training exercise carried out by the immigration service under the ministry of interior. This present situation poses a huge question which no one is answering; “Where does the illegality come in?”

A dangerous trend is being set and of course will have it’s own negative effects.

Months back, there was a secret recruitment scandal that rocked the Central Bank of Nigeria, Federal Inland Revenue Services and Nigerian National Petroleum Company. These antecedents is fueling a suspicion that this latest development is as a result of a new recruitment racketeering plan as the ministry is yet to give a tenable reason for the laying off.

The hashtag #NigeriaImmigration2000 is already trending on Social Media Platforms demanding not only explanations to the ill-advised decision of the ministry of interior but also a reinstatement of the sent off recruits.

If truly the immigration service needs 25, 000 recruits to effective man our borders, this fact begs the question; “why then are we laying off 2000 recruits especially when they have gone through examinations and training?

The demand is clear cut and simple; FG should reverse the decision to disperse these 2000 trained immigration recruits. In a country that has a high population of unemployed youths, such decisions will have not just destructive but catastrophic effects on the nation.
