Nigerian government to commence registration of unemployed citizens

The Nigerian government is set to begin online registration of unemployed Nigerians from April 5, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

A statement released, Monday, by the Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations of the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, Edmund Onwuliri, said the registration was aimed at collecting up-to-date data of unemployed Nigerians.

Mr. Onwuliri said the registration was in compliance with NDE’s mandate to obtain and maintain a data bank on unemployment and vacancies in the country.

The deputy director, according to the statement, said the exercise would enable the directorate to serve as a clearing house linking job seekers with existing vacancies in government agencies and the private sector.

“The online portal which goes live on Wednesday April 5, 2017, is designed to capture the relevant details of any unemployed person,” he said.

“It will equally serve as a job exchange portal that will link job seekers and employers,” he added.

The NDE chief also reiterated that there will be a practical demonstration of the workings of the portal at the NDE stand at the ongoing 28th edition of the Enugu International Trade on Thursday.

“The directorate sees this initiative as a bold step toward deepening the effectiveness of its employment creation strategies and a critical input into the process of designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating programmes and schemes,” he added.

Mr. Onwuliri explained that the online portal would henceforth serve as a meeting point for millions of job seekers and their prospective employers.

He also added that the initiative would go a long way to eliminate the cumbersome process of recruitment by employers of skilled labour in private and public sectors.

The address of the portal, the statement noted, is www.jobsforall.ng

Buhari Never Promised Unemployed Youths N5,000 Stipends- Presidency

The Presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari never promised to pay N5,000 monthly allowance to unemployed graduates.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, said this in an interview
last night.
According to Akande, the N5, 000 monthly stipend provided for in the 2016 budget is for one million vulnerable Nigerians and the extremely poor.
“The 2016 budget submitted to the National Assembly has made an allocation of N500bn; the first time in the history of this country’s budget where you’ve that huge chunk of money allocated for social investment. In that N500bn, close to about 20% of the entire budget, there are six social safety net programmes. One of them is the conditional cash transfer where the government is going to pay N5, 000 monthly to the vulnerable and extremely poor Nigerians. That promise stands.
“The president never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5000; the president never made that promise, and the government never made that claim that it’ll pay N5, 000 to unemployed graduates,” he stated.
He said the programme for unemployed graduates was the direct creation of 500,000 teaching jobs for which they would be trained and deployed to schools, assuring that “That still stands.”
Akande clarified that: “In addition to that, there is also a scheme to train 370, 000 non-graduate youths for skill acquisition and vocational training. During the time of that training, they’ll also be paid. So, the president did not say that he’d be giving unemployed graduates N5, 000.”

Personality Types That Are Most Likely To Be Unemployed

If you’re wondering why it’s so difficult for you to hold down a job, you might consider taking a personality assessment. Science suggests there’s one personality type that’s more likely to be unemployed than others.

A new report from Truity Psychometrics, a provider of online personality and career assessments, found that, overall, being a “Perceiver” significantly predicts your tendency to be jobless.

ISFPs (people with a preference for Introversion, Sensing, Feeling, and Perceiving) were the most likely of all 16 personality types to report being unemployed. And INFPs, INTPs, ENTPs, and ESFPs were all more likely than average to report that they were out of a job, according to the report.

Molly Owens, CEO of Truity and developer of the TypeFinder® personality type assessment, isn’t too surprised by this finding.

She tells Business Insider the result replicates previous studies of the Big Five personality modelthat have repeatedly found that people with high levels of a trait called “conscientiousness” — or a person’s tendency to be goal-oriented and persistent — tend to earn more and be more successful in their careers.

She says Judgers are often highly conscientious while Perceivers tend to have lower levels of conscientiousness, so it’s expected that Judgers would experience more career achievement.

“Perceivers tend to be freewheeling, spontaneous types who dislike schedules and structure,” Owens says. “At the extreme, and if they haven’t developed good organizational skills, Perceivers can have trouble meeting deadlines and keeping up with demanding jobs. So they may actually be more likely to lose their jobs in the first place, if they’re not meeting expectations.”

Unemployed, Poor Nigerians To Get N5000 Monthly- FG

The Buhari Administration at the weekend declared that there are ongoing plans to implement one of its striking campaign promises that it will pay N5000 each to the poorest Nigerians across the country.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who gave the hint noted that government is “currently evaluating the best ways to collapse existing cash transfer and social welfare schemes to ensure consistency and alignment.

“Once this is completed, we will implement the first phase of this program, using recognized identification platforms and transparent payment solutions”, he added.

Osinbajo who disclosed this at the 10th Year Anniversary Lecture of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State titled, ‘The Nigerian Economy and the Future’, also said the federal government has identified the weak transmission grid, which prevents the wheeling of more than 5,000MW as a gridlock to be removed.

He assured that the Buhari administration would work with the distribution companies to ensure the necessary investment to get electricity to consumers is in place.

On the pervasive poverty ravaging the country, Osinbajo said the payment of N5000 each to poor Nigerians was necessary because “we cannot talk about the economy of the future without addressing how we move people out of poverty.

“One of the most striking promises we made during the campaign was the payment of Five Thousand Naira to the poorest Nigerians across the country”, he noted, even as he regretted that today, “about 112 million (66% of Nigerians) are deemed extremely poor, measured by World Bank parameter of those living on less than US$1.25 per day.”
