Agency Says Violation Of Environmental Laws, Greed Responsible For Flooding

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) says distortions of town planning guidelines and disregard for environmental laws are responsible for floods and environmental challenges in the country.

NIHSA’s Director-General, Mr Moses Beckley, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

“There are environmental laws and there are also town planning guidelines and restrictions.“In other words, for any town, for any place there are guidelines as to where you should construct, build or erect anything or where you should not.

“Of course there are places that are meant for building the house.

“But in a situation whereby people now disregard such restrictions and then build in the areas where they shouldn’t build, then they are looking for trouble.

“Who is to blame?

“I was in Zaria and I discovered that the river channels were tampered with, therefore, reducing the flow of the river.

“Consequently, that had a flash back which eventually flooded on the environment and affected the people staying in that environment.

“Unfortunately, most of our people tend to do these things deliberately in order to attract relief, rights, financial relief and that shouldn’t be the case, especially in these days where you have resources dwindling.

“Such release does not come regularly and then what happens to all the properties destroyed and sometime if live lost, how do you replace, so we need to be wiser and do the needful.’’

Boko Haram Not Responsible For Kano Blast– Zakzaky

Leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky has said last week’s bomb explosion in Kano which killed 24 persons during Arba’een symbolic trek, was not carried out by Boko Haram even when it claimed responsibility for the attack.

Spokesperson for the group, Ibrahim Usman in a statement, quoted Zakzaky as saying, “we know the names of the contractors and those contracted to commit the massacre; their identity is not hidden from us.

“Therefore, we cannot be cowed by an imaginary Boko Haram tale; let them tell it to the fools and the ignorant. They should know that they are dealing with those with foresight, wisdom and intelligence, and above all, with the real religion.” 

The Muslim cleric opined that the attack was manipulated to make the public believe that Boko Haram launched the attack through a suicide bomber, alleging that the media was used to suppress the news of the attack and limit it to a so-called suicide bomber. There was nothing like a suicide bomber. They torture and drug unsuspecting captives and made them carriers of the explosives which they detonated among people”.

Sheikh Zakzaky further alleged that perpetrators of Kano bomb attack were the same people, who seven years ago, in broad daylight, attacked us and killed two people, attacked the Ashura procession, killed people in Potiskum and killed 34 people during Quds Day procession in Zaria in 2014.

Boko Haram, ISIS Responsible For More Than Half Of World’s Deaths From Terrorism, Study Says

The number of people killed globally in terrorist attacks jumped 80 percent last year to the highest level ever recorded, the Institute for Economics and Peace said Tuesday.

The Global Terrorism Index found that 32,658 people were killed by terrorists in 2014, up from the 18,111 fatalities of the previous year, the largest increase on record.

The study defines terrorism as “the threatened or actual use of illegal force and violence by a non-state actor to attain a political, economic, religious, or social goal through fear, coercion, or intimidation”.

Nigeria-based Boko Haram and the Islamic State group were responsible for more than half of the deaths, according to the study, which measures attacks, deaths and damage from terror attacks in 162 countries.

“Terrorism is gaining momentum at an unprecedented pace,” said Steve Killelea, the executive chairman of the Institute of Economics and Peace, which produces the study.

The increase followed a 61 percent rise in 2013.

The study found that terrorism was highly concentrated, with the five countries ofAfghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria accounting for 78 percent of deaths last year.

Iraq was the worst affected with 9,929 deaths from terrorism — suffering both the highest number of attacks and the most fatalities from terrorism ever recorded by a country.

The biggest rise in fatalities from terrorism however was in Nigeria, which saw an increase of over 300 percent in deaths to 7,512.

Hold PDP Responsible For Osun’s Inability To Pay Workers’ Salaries- APC Group

Coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups (COASG) South-West zone has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led government should be held responsible for the inability, of Osun State to pay its workers’ salaries.

The chairman COASG, Hon. Adebisi Abraham said that there is no smoke without fire and that the Osun State government led by Governor Rauf Aregbesola has done credibly well in terms of providing basic infrastructure for the state compared to his predecessors.

He said, “Despite the financial shortage, even the most virulent critics of this government cannot deny that the administration has performed creditably well.”

Abraham said, “Governor Aregbesola’s government built roads, schools, supplied students with Opon Imo (Tablets of Knowledge), distributed uniforms to all public students in the state, created welfare programmes for the old and vulnerable people as well as supporting farmers.’’

He said that you cannot compare Aregbesola with other PDP governors which have failed totally in terms of payment of salaries and infrastructural development in their states.
