Gunmen suspected to be political thugs on Saturday stormed Angwan Mangu and disrupted the ongoing re-run elections for Lafia-Obi federal constituency in Nasarawa state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared inconclusive the Lafia -Obi federal constituency elections and fixed Saturday 18 April for re-run in Chiroma ward before announcing the final result.
The gunmen, who came in three different vehicles, shot sporadically into the air to disrupt the exercise and possibly snatch election materials meant for the exercise.
Although the gunmen did not shoot anyone, but people took to their heels scampering for safety to avoid stray bullets.
However, unlucky for the gunmen, security agencies drafted to man the polling unit located close to the ECO bank along Jos Road, called for re -enforcement and arrested them with 7 Ak47 in one of their vehicles.
Witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES that the suspects were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad with seven AK47 in their cars after shooting in the air to disrupt the exercise.
John Tsaku said they came in three different vehicles, shooting in the air, scaring people during accreditation of eligible voters.
“The boys armed with AK47 first tried to snatch election materials but when voters on the queue resisted, they started shooting before the police, who were invited to arrest them, caught them with seven AK47 in the vehicle they parked across the road,” he said.
