No Apology Calling For Mu’azu, Others Sacking- Fayose

Ekiti State Governor has insisted that his call for the dissolution of the Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu-led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party was in good faith, and in the overall interest of the party, saying, “I have no apology on my position on the NWC because their responsibility as a party does not take away their failure in the last general elections.”

The governor, who also challenged the NWC to provide evidence of money released to him to prosecute the last elections, added that, “only N30m was received for the last two elections and to the glory of the Almighty God and support of Ekiti people, we won all elections outright. I therefore demand for the mode with which money was released to me by the NWC.” In a release issued in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose reiterated his commitment to the PDP, pointing out that if it remained only him in the party, he would continue to defend its cause.

“If it remains only me, I will continue to defend the cause of this party because some people are born to stand up at difficult times, and I believe I am one of such people born to stand up for the PDP at this difficult time,” he said.

Reiterating his call for the dissolution of the NWC, Governor Fayose said, “In saner climes, when a war commander leads his troupe to an embarrassing defeat, such commander does not need anyone to tell him that he needs to leave the war front for another commander to take over.”

Reps Elect Demands 50% Pay Cut For Buhari, Lawmakers, Others

A House of Representatives member-elect, Abdullahi Gaya, from Kano State, on Monday asked the in-coming administration of Muhammadu Buhari to slash the wages and allowances of the Presidency and National Assembly by 50 per cent.

Mr. Gaya, who spoke to journalists at his residence in Kano, said the reduction in salaries would cater for the nation’s capital expenditure.

Until his election as a legislator, Mr. Gaya was the Commissioner of Finance in Kano state.

“In my opinion I think it will be better for all the elected representatives, beginning from Mr. President to members of parliament, to Ministers, to other Advisors and special assistants, to agree that what we will be receiving is slashed to 50 per cent,” he said.

Mr. Gaya, who will represent Gaya/Ajing/Albasu federal constituency, said Nigerian leaders need to reduce their expenses for the country to have positive changes.

“Since we believe the country needs positive change we should therefore accept it as such. The slash in the expenses should continue till when our dear nation gets to execute capital projects. May be from the time we were inaugurated to another two years,” he said.

His call came days after a Senator-elect, Dino Melaye, pledged to lead a campaign for the reduction of Nigeria’s federal lawmakers, who are ranked the highest paid legislators in the world.

Mr. Melaye also said the government should use the funds realized from pay cut to develop the nation.

Boko Haram Stone Girls To Death, Crush Others With Armoured Tankers To Avert Rescue

Even with the crackle of gunfire signaling rescuers were near, the horrors did not end: Boko Haram fighters stoned captives to death, some girls and women were crushed by an armored car and three died when a land mine exploded as they walked to freedom.

Through tears, smiles and eyes filled with pain, the survivors of months in the hands of the Islamic extremists told their tragic stories to The Associated Press on Sunday, their first day out of the war zone.

“We just have to give praise to God that we are alive, those of us who have survived,” said 27-year-old Lami Musa as she cradled her 5-day-old baby girl.

She was among 275 girls, women and their young children, many bewildered and traumatized, who were getting medical care and being registered a day after making it to safety.

Nigeria’s military said it has freed nearly 700 Boko Haram captives in the past week. It is still unclear if any of them were among the so-called “Chibok girls,” whose mass abduction from their school a year ago sparked outrage worldwide and a campaign for their freedom under the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

Musa was in the first group of rescued women and girls to be transported by road over three days to the safety of the Malkohi refugee camp, a dust-blown deserted school set among baobab trees opposite a military barracks on the outskirts of Yola, the capital of northeastern Adamawa state.

N25Bn Scam: Judge Convicts Igbinedion, Others

Justice J. Liman of the Federal High Court, Benin, on Wednesday convicted Charles Eboigbodin and Michael Igbinedion, younger brother to Lucky Igbinedion, former Edo State governor.

The duo alongside their companies: Gava Corporation Limited; Romrig Nigeria Limited; PML Securities Company Limited and PML Nigeria Limited, were prosecuted on an 81-count charge of money laundering, misappropriation of funds and abuse of office brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The convicts pleaded not guilty when they were arraigned, setting the stage for a full trial. In the course of trial, the prosecution called several witnesses to prove its case.

One of them, Ajoyo Sowale, an Accounts Officer with the Guaranty Trust Bank, identified various account statements and account opening documents of the convicts and confirmed to the court that several lodgements were made into the accounts, and that he printed the account statements and got them certified by the appropriate authority.

The parties adopted their written addressed in November 14, 2014, while judgment was fixed for December 1, 2014. But a series of adjournments delayed the delivery of the ruling till April 29.

When justice Liman finally delivered his ruling today, he found the two accused persons guilty on some of the counts. The judge convicted Mr. Eboigbodin for money laundering on counts 50-59, while Mr. Igbinedion was pronounced guilty as charged on counts 79-81. The judge however deferred the sentencing of the convicts till tomorrow April 30, 2015.

Some lawyers in court said they were shocked that while the suspects committed the same offence and faced the same charges, the judge found Mr. Igbinedion guilty of a lesser offence. “As it is now, Igbinedion may get away with a slap on the wrist while Eboigbodin may face a more severe punishment.”

U.S. Likely To Sanction Patience Jonathan, Orubebe, Others

The United States government appears set to sanction Nigeria’s ?first lady, Patience Jonathan, a former Niger Delta minister, Godsday Orubebe, ?and ?the ?governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, and other Nigerians accused of either disrupting the just concluded elections, or instigating violence.

The U.S. said Monday that it will impose visa restrictions on any Nigerian found to have incited violence or interfered with the electoral process.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said in a? statement that the U.S. will shut its doors on people involved in any form of violence during the polls.

“Anyone found to have incited violence or interfered with electoral processes will be unwelcome in the United States and subject to visa sanctions,” Ms. Thomas-Greenfield said.

Although Ms. Thomas-Greenfield did not give names of those considered for sanctions, Mr. Orubebe, appears one of the most likely targets.

The former minister openly disrupted the process of collation of the presidential election results in Abuja on March 31, as the event was broadcast live by the international media.

Accusing the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, of bias, Mr. Orubebe for several minutes asked Mr. Jega to stand down before the process could continue.

The former minister received worldwide condemnation for his actions, and later apologised.

Mrs. Jonathan had said at the ?ruling ?Peoples Democratic Party Women Campaign in Calabar, Cross River State, early March, that anyone chanting change should be stoned.

“I’m telling you, anyone that comes and tell you change, stone that person,” she said. “What you did not do 19 kilikili, is now that age has caught up with you, you want to come and change? You can’t change rather you will turn back to a baby. You will turn back to a baby. From old age nothing, so nothing like change. Rather (it) is continuity.”

Fayose, Deputy, Others Lose Bid To Stop Impeachment

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and his deputy, Olusola Kolapo, yesterday lost the bid to stop moves for their impeachment. A Federal High Court in Abuja rejected their prayers for interim orders restraining House of Assembly Speaker Adewale Omirin and other All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola and others from proceeding with the impeachment plot.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in a ruling on their motion ex-parte, granted them leave for substituted services of all processes in relation to the suit, on the defendants.

The judge ordered Omirin and other defendants in the suit to appear before the court on April 16 to show why the restraining orders sought against them by the plaintiffs should not be granted. The plaintiffs include Joseph Dele Olugbemi (who claimed to be Speaker), the  House of Assembly, Fayose and Kolapo. Listed as defendants are Omirin, the inspector general of Police (IGP), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the chief judge.
