Seven Niger Soldiers Killed By Boko Haram

 Seven Niger soldiers were killed and eight others wounded in two separate attacks by Boko Haram Islamists over the past week, the army has said.

The two attacks took place in the southeastern Diffa region near the border with Nigeria, according to a military statement released late on Tuesday.

Five of them were killed in an ambush on Monday morning carried out by “members of the Boko Haram terrorist group” which also left six others wounded.

In an earlier incident on September 8, two soldiers were killed and another two wounded when their patrol vehicle went over “an improvised explosive device”, the statement said.

Earlier this month, five villagers were killed and two others wounded in the same area in another attack by the Nigeria-based jihadist group in the first such incident since early June.

Boko Haram’s seven-year insurgency has left at least 20,000 people dead in Nigeria and border areas of neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, and made more than 2.6 million homeless.

Olympics: FINA Bans Seven Russian Swimmers From Rio

Swimming’s world governing body on Monday banned seven Russians from competing at next month’s Rio Olympics in the fall-out from Russia’s state-run doping.

FINA was the first sport to impose bans in light of Sunday’s IOC decision, which ruled against a blanket ban on all Russian competitors in Rio, instead leaving it up to each sports federation to decide whether to accept Russians.

Vladimir Morozov and Nikita Lobintsev, both 4x100m freestyle bronze-medal winners with the Russian team at the 2012 Olympics, and Yulia Efimova, another 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, were among the seven banned.

Seven Die As Nigerian Air Force Aircraft Crashes

Seven people have been killed after an aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force crashed at the old site of the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna , Northwest Nigeria.

The casualties include all four crew members and three passengers. The victims were travelling from the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kaduna en route Abuja.

Emergency officials say the helicopter crashed less than ten minutes after taking off.

Boko Haram Attacks Village, Kills Seven

Boko Haram extremists on Monday raided a village in restive northeast Nigeria’s Borno state near the border with Niger, killing seven people, community leaders told AFP.

Dozens of gunmen stormed Awonori, a farming and herding village near the fishing town of Damasak, and carted away food supplies and livestock, they said.

“They killed seven people, looted grains and took away all the livestocks in the village before fleeing into the bush,” Muhammadu Modu Wan-Wan, head of the Damasak fishermen’s union, told AFP.

“The gunmen who came in vans and on motorcycles around 7:00 am (0600 GMT) besieged the village and opened fire on residents as they were having breakfast before moving to their farms,” he said.

Wan-Wan said the attack forced the villagers to flee but they returned after the assailants had left.

Abubakar Gamandi, the head of Borno’s fishermen’s union, confirmed the attack.

“I received report from my members in the Damasak area that Boko Haram gunmen attacked Awonori village this morning where they killed seven people and took away food and livestocks,” he said.

Last month, residents of Damasak and surrounding villages fled their homes and crossed the border into the Niger town of Diffa, fearing Boko Haram attacks.

But Wan-Wan said many residents have since returned to their farms.

“People have no food to feed their families which is why they take the risk of going back to their villages to work on their farms now that the rainy season has started,” he said.

PDP’s Disciplinary Committee Summons Former Deputy Governor, Seven Others

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned a former acting governor of the state, Werinipre Seibarugu and seven others to appear before a disciplinary committee set by the party’s leadership.

The committee was set up to review cases of anti-party activities levelled against members of the party during the just concluded general elections.

Other leaders of the party summoned to appear before the committee was a former Chairman, Ekeremor Local Government, Robinson Etolor and the personal assistant to incumbent Senator Emmanuel Paulker, Osomkime Blankson.

Others are  Leghemo Kaizer, Stephen Kayama, Ebikapadei Dibiya, Hon. I. E Brigidi and Benimor Conliff Fiebai.
