North Central records highest road accidents – FRSC

Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, has said that zone 4 of the corp made up of Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states has the highest rate of accidents in the country.

Oyeyemi, who spoke on Wednesday at the flag off of the sensitisation rally on the speed limiting devices and then 2016 ember months campaign in Jos, said last year the zone recorded 905 accidents, while 279 people died.

He, however, added that in 2016, road accidents decreased to 784, but had the highest number of fatalities of 331 deaths.

He said these accidents were largely caused by human error, like speeding and urged motorists to exercise caution while driving in these ember months.

Oyeyemi said, “Over time, the corps, through research and statistics has established that speed and speed related offences have been responsible for high percentage of crashes (over 60 per cent)and this prompted the introduction of the speed limiting devices.”

APC Denies Zoning Of Senate President To North-Central

APC has denied a published report that its National Working Committee (NWC) met on Monday night and decided to zone the Senate Presidency to the North-Central and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the South-West, saying nothing like
that ever happened.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the party said it was deeply embarrassed by the story, which was apparently planted in the media to sow the seeds of instability in the party.

”The NWC never discussed the issued of zoning at its meeting.

Therefore, the report of its decision on zoning is a figment of the imagination of whoever concocted the story,” it said.

APC said nothing has changed since the President-elect said he is ready to work with anyone from any part of the country who occupies any of the principal offices of the incoming National Assembly, including those of the Senate Presidency and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Saraki, Akume Divide North-Central Senate Caucus

The race for the Senate President seat has divided current and newly elected senators from the North-Central. The division is over who to support between the two leading candidates for the position from the zone.

Senators Bukola Sariki and George Akume have shown interest in the post. The ambition of the two senators has divided the caucus into two camps with those in support and those against each of the candidates throwing up their advantages and disadvantages.

The split has led to some other senators from other zones to be looking outside the North-Central towards the Northeast and are said to be putting Senator Ahmad Lawan as their preferred candidate.

North Central Scrambles For Senate Presidency Slot

As the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, plans to meet to take final decision on the zoning of the offices to the six geo-political zones, the North Central caucus of the party yesterday met in Abuja and asked the party to zone the position of the senate presidency to the zone.

The APC caucus in the North Central in a communique signed by the zonal chairman chairman of the party, Mr. Zakari Ede, and the six states chairmen in region, said it was clear that APC will form the majority in the forthcoming 8th Assembly based on the results of the general elections.

The group which demanded for the position of senate president to be zoned to their area noted that in due course the “Senate President will be chosen from one of our Distinguished Senators.”

Their demand as they stated was hinged on the fact that the zone performed well in the election by giving adequate support to the party, adding that ceding the seat of senate president to will will be a reward for their performance.

Insisting that the North Central being a vulnerable zone, its success and victory should not be taken for granted, they said that it would only be just and equitable for the position of the Senate President to be allotted to the North Central.
