The Director-General, National Orientation Agency, (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri on Tuesday said the agency would embark on sensitisation campaigns on the new electricity tariff regime.
Omeri told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the campaign would educate Nigerians on the requirements and benefits of the new Multi -Year Tariff Order 2015 (MYTO).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government on Monday commenced the 45 per cent new increased electricity tariff which was introduced in 2012.
The NOA boss told NAN that Nigerians want sustained power supply but needed proper sensitisation on the provisions of the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act.
“If fully implemented, the Act will enable even the indigent Nigerians have access to power supply and improve their general quality of life. NOA will immediately develop messaging in both English and local languages to sensitise Nigerians on the new MYTO which took effect Feb. 1,’’ he said.
Omeri said that the Nigerian power sector reforms must provide an appropriate pricing template which had been lacking, leading to a deficiency in revenues from power.
He said that this necessitated the new MYTO which would aid generation, transmission and distribution companies to provide needed infrastructure for higher generation and supply of electricity to meet the needs of Nigerians.
He said that under the new MYTO, all premises must be metered and consumers who subscribe to specific metering models must be supplied meters within 60 days.
Omeri said that after which they would not be disconnected or charged on estimation if a meter was not supplied.
“If you apply for a prepaid meter and it is not supplied after 60 days, nobody has the right to charge you on estimated bill or disconnect your light. These are some of the conditions attached to MYTO that Nigerians, especially those at the grassroots need to know in order to avoid being conned by some unscrupulous elements,’’ he said.
Omeri said that Power Consumer Assistance Fund had been put in place to cater for the electricity needs of the less privileged in the country.
