Magnus Abe: Wike bought cars for PDP lawmakers but those in APC use taxis.

Magnus Abe, senator representing Rivers south-east senatorial district, has alleged that lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Rivers state house of assembly take taxis to work.

Abe said while the state government bought vehicles for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislators, no provision was made for the six lawmakers of the APC.

He accused the administration of Nyesom Wike, the governor, of divisiveness, saying the action of the governor could lead to disunity in parliament.

Abe was speaking in Port Harcourt during a stakeholders’ meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

“Mr. President Sir, the Rivers state house of assembly has 32 members. Out of the 32 members, six are of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Only these six people take taxis to the assembly,” he said.

“All other members drive cars that were bought by the Rivers state government, and the governor tells us it is his personal contribution to the house and these other six people are not entitled.

“In an atmosphere of that nature, it is clear that there can be no unity because it is not the words that we say in the front of television cameras that will bring unity. It is the actions that we take when nobody is watching.”

Efforts made to reach Simeon Nwakaudu, spokesman of the governor, did not yield the desired result. He neither answered his call nor responded to a text message sent.

However, Abe also alleged that there was a “deliberate scheme” by the state authorities to prevent APC stakeholders from attending the meeting.

Abe, who is the chairman, senate committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), said the publicity materials which the APC mounted in strategic places to welcome Osinbajo, were destroyed by PDP members.

“At the forum, people talked so much about unity. How we all are united and how what was happening in government house is the united position of all Rivers people,’ he said.

“But, Mr President Sir, let me say that unity is not what we say or do when the acting president of Nigeria is seated and all the television stations are tuned in to what we are doing, unity is what we do when the acting president is not there; when the cameras are not there.

“As a senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, I did not receive an invitation to the meeting. It was at the airport your own staff tried to give us invitation. That is not an act that will promote unity.

“We put up our banners to welcome you to this state, a leading member of PDP had the boldness to go and pull them down. We have reported the matter to the Police. We believe that action must be taken so that the impunity that existed before can no longer exist under this administration.

“I want to thank you for coming here today because if you did not come here, you will not have known that these numbers of Rivers people were shamelessly excluded from the forum.

“Let me use this opportunity to call on the federal government to take a very clear and decisive step to try to bring peace in Rivers State.”

Breaking: Saraki swears in Rivers Senators as Senate adjourns till January

Senate President Bukola Saraki has administered oath of office on Magnus Abe, George Sekibo and Osinakachukwu Ideozu, newly elected senators from Rivers State.

The three lawmakers were elected in the Rivers legislative re-run elections that held on Saturday.

The exercise – still ongoing as results are yet to be known for nine constituencies – was characterized by widespread violence and irregularities.

Mr. Abe represents Rivers South East; Mr. Sekibo; Rivers East; and Mr. Ideozu, Rivers West.

The seats for the three senatorial districts from Rivers State had been vacant since December when the Court Appeal invalidated legislative elections held during the 2015 general elections in the oil rich state.

“They just came from a tough election,” Mr. Saraki said after congratulating the newly sworn in Senators.

Mr. Sekibo (PDP) is in the Senate for the third time, Mr. Abe (APC) the second time and Mr. Ideozu (PDP) is a first time senator.

Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned sitting till January 10.

The resolution for adjournment was reached after the Senate reconvened Thursday afternoon to approve votes and proceedings of the day.

BREAKING: PDP rejects Magnus Abe, demands fresh election.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has questioned the victory of Magnus Abe, senator-elect of Rivers east, in Saturday’s rerun election, demanding a fresh exercise.

Dayo Adeyeye, spokesman of the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party, said this in a statement.

Adeyeye alleged that the military and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) worked against the PDP in the election.

“The result which declared Magnus Abe of the APC winner is an unprecedented massive manipulation of the electoral process in active connivance with the security agencies. The whole world knows that elections did not take place in the Rivers south east senatorial district,” he said in a statement.

“We therefore reject the declaration of Magnus Abe with the fabricated results, and demand INEC to conduct election in that constituency. We promise to avail ourselves every opportunity to seek redress on this matter in the interest of democracy and that of the constituents who are denied their right to vote.”

Adeyeye challenged INEC to declare results of the election in the remaining areas.

He said information from polling units shows that the PDP has won the remaining two senatorial districts, and some federal and state constituencies.

“The results that are being withheld are: Rivers west senatorial district, Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro federal constituency and Andoni state house of assembly constituency,” he said.

“We have the results declared at the various polling units which show that Senator Osinakachukwu Ideozu also of the PDP won the Rivers west senatorial district.

“Equally, we make bold to state that Hon. Abiante and Ikunyi Ibani both of the PDP won their respective elections into Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency and Andoni State Constituency, respectively.

“INEC is currently witholding these results in cohort with security agencies to pave way for the APC to manipulate the outcome of the elections. We urge INEC to immediately release the affected results intact. Anything short of this is unacceptable.

“We again condemn in totality, the adverse role of the Nigerian Army, the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other security agencies during this re-run elections in Rivers state. It was a nightmare and a complete reversal of their constitutional mandates of safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country and the protection of lives and properties.

“There are incontrovertible evidence that the security agencies worked for the APC against the interest of the Rivers people. They followed the directives of the APC Chairman, John Oyegun and Governor Ganduje of Kano State during the mega rally of the APC. They killed, they maimed, they harassed all in the desperate need to help the APC win at all cost.”

Magnus Abe: My victory is a reward for faithfulness.

Magnus Abe, senator-elect of Rivers east, has described his victory in the legislative rerun election as a reward for faithfulness.

Expressing appreciation to his constituents, Abe said there is “no victor, no vanquish”.

He extended hands of fellowship to Olaka Nwogu, his opponent in the race, and called on Nyesom Wike, governor of the state to congratulate him on his victory.

Abe also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari; Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation; and his wife for the role they played in his emergence.

“First is to say that this has been a titanic struggle; it has been a very difficult two years for Rivers people and for all of us,” he said in a statement.

“My victory in this election is a reward for faithfulness. I have been faithful to my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).  I have been faithful to my people, the people of the Rivers south east senatorial district and I have been faithful to my leaders and I think God in his infinite mercies has rewarded me with this unprecedented victory. There is no victor, no vanquish.

“I want to thank my friend and brother, Distinguished Senator Olaka Nwogu for his very kind and peaceful words, which he has expressed to the people of this state.

“I also want to use this opportunity to extend a hand of friendship to the executive Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike and to say to him that he had promised that there was nothing personal in this contest and he has said that if I win he will congratulate me. The only barometer for measuring success in an election in this country is the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the commission has declared me the winner, I want to call on the governor to keep his words and send me his letter and words of congratulation because I have won.

“I want to also say that Rivers state has suffered enough and that it is time for us to bring this contest to an end.

“I want to thank my leaders, President Muhammadu Buhari, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, my wife, my family and most importantly, the people of Rivers south east senatorial district. You have spoken and you have spoken loud and clear. We should respect your views. We should work together to make this district a better place for Nigerians to live.

“I want to thank my colleagues in the senate for their kind words, friendship and support and I look forward to joining them in the red chamber as soon as possible.”
