Gabon Police Arrest 200 Over Post-election Looting

More than 200 people have been arrested for looting in Gabon’s capital, Libreville, where violence broke out following a disputed presidential election result, the police chief said Thursday.

“We have arrested more than 200 looters since last night,” national police chief Jean-Thierry Oye Zue said. “Looting is currently continuing in the poorer districts.”

“Six police officers have been injured,” Oye Zue said, adding that several civilians had also “most likely” been hurt.

He did not confirm however there had been any deaths.

“I can’t tell you that,” he said.

Violence erupted on Thursday after President Ali Bongo was declared the winner of the contested polls, with thousands of angry protesters taking to the streets of Libreville accusing the government of stealing the election from rival Jean Ping.

The opposition leader said security forces killed two people and injured 19 more at his headquarters.

APC Describes PDP Looting As Spine-Chilling, Mind-Boggling

The governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were back in the trenches once again on Sunday.

While the APC described looting of the nation’s treasury under the PDP, from which it recently wrested power, as spine-chilling and mind-boggling, the latter expressed fears that the governing party is eroding the basic tenets of democracy.

A press statement by the APC was issued by its spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, while his counterpart in the PDP, Olisa Metuh, penned the opposition party’s position.

The APC accused the former ruling party of “massive looting”, adding that nothing but the total recovery of the funds would be acceptable to all patriotic citizens.

According to Mohammed, “anyone who attempts, either by deeds or words, to sabotage the recovery efforts is not a patriot and deserves nothing but public opprobrium.”

A National Peace Committee led by former military ruler, General Abdulsalami Abubakar has advised President Muhammadu Buhari against probes, urging the new government to concentrate on governance.

But the APC, which thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support for the Buhari administration “in its tough but important task of tracing and recovering the loots,” pledged to ensure “that the looters face justice.”

James Ibori Has Suffered Enough! Grant him Presidential Pardon – Ijaw Group Urges President Jonathan

A call has been made for president Jonathan to grant presidential pardon to James Ibori before his exit from Aso Rock. The call made by the Ijaw People’s Development Initiative, IPDI, in Delta State says the former governor of the state ,deserves to be pardoned .

Speaking to newsmen, the National President the group, Mr. Austin Ozobo, said:

“Chief Ibori has suffered enough and there is no justification for not granting him clemency, as had been done to others.Ibori should be freed. Hundreds of persons, who looted heavily from government coffers are walking freely in the streets. The continuous incarceration of one corrupt man among a million other corrupt citizens cannot change the menace of high level corruption in the country.Ibori’s imprisonment could be seen as a witch-hunt and such is highly barbaric and provocative and the Nigerian government must quickly do something about his matter. ‘’Despite the ordeals Ibori is passing through, Deltans hold him in high esteem and his great achievements while in office cannot be discountenanceded. There should be no sacred cow among political office holders. Ibori’s case is not different, he is a victim of circumstances. Release him and let him breathe fresh air and let other corrupt public office holders be tried as well.”
