Loescher said he estimated the lobster to be 30 or 40 years old, due to its size.
Bemused by its gargantuan presence, Loescher took a few photos before contemplating whether to donate the crustacean to a local aquarium.
But since he was fishing at night, aquariums were closed, and did not answer his calls.
“After never seeing something that size before,” Loescher said, “I decided it was best for it to go back to the home he came from.”
The fisherman said he returned him back to the water, and went swimming with the creature for nearly a half hour before watching the lobster regain strength, and take off.
Despite questions on Facebook about why Loescher would set the animal free, he said he never intended to keep the lobster to eat because of its size.
Most lobsters for sale weigh between 1 and 3 pounds.
At nearly 14 pounds, some commenters also speculated its flesh may have been tough, and nearly inedible due to its age.
