MMM Will Lead To Losses, Access Bank Warns Customers

Access Bank Nigeria Plc has warned its customers to avoid dealing with Mavrodi Mondial Movement, a Ponzi scheme, which has been declared illegal by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The bank in an emailed statement to its customers said it had come to its attention “that some customers are engaged in the Ponzi scheme called ‘MMM’”.

“Please be advised that this scheme is not in line with any applicable or known investment product and may ultimately lead to loss of funds in the long run,” the bank warned.

“We advise that customers avail themselves of genuine and approved investments and products in the Nigerian banking environment.”

Despite the warning by the Federal Government, thousands of Nigerians have continued to patronise the scheme with its website ranking as one of the five most visited in the country, ahead of Facebook.

UN Under Fire For Picking Wonder Woman To Lead Campaign

The United Nations on Monday defended the choice of comic book character Wonder Woman to lead a campaign for the empowerment of girls following criticism that the choice was demeaning to women.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is due to attend a ceremony on Friday to officially designate Wonder Woman as the UN honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls.

The announcement came a few days after Antonio Guterres, the former prime minister of Portugal, was chosen to be the next secretary general, disappointing women’s groups who had campaigned for the first woman to be appointed the world’s diplomat-in-chief.

“It’s ridiculous,” said Shazia Rafi, one of the leaders of the She4SG campaign and a former secretary general of Parliamentarians for Global Action.

“The campaign for women’s empowerment is represented by a cartoon when there are so many real-life women who could have been chosen,” she said.

Rafi, who has written to Ban urging him to skip the ceremony, is pushing for a boycott of the event on Friday, demanding that Wonder Woman be dropped from the campaign.

“It should be scrapped,” she told AFP.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric hit back at the criticism, saying the choice of Wonder Woman was simply an attempt to reach younger audiences.

‘Pregnant’ Male Politicians Lead Japan Housework Drive

A trio of male Japanese politicians has gamely strapped on “pregnancy vests” that simulate swollen bellies in a lighthearted campaign for men to pick up the slack in a nation where women do most of the housework.

The three governors of southwestern prefectures are taking to the airwaves with the public awareness campaign that loosely translates as: “The governor is a pregnant woman.”

Japanese men are not very helpful husbands when it comes to housework: they do just one hour of unpaid work daily compared to five hours for their wives, according to a 2014 study by the 35-nation Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The three-minute spot, which started running last week, shows the hapless lawmakers being outfitted with seven kilogramme (16 pound) vests that mimic the belly of a woman who is about seven months pregnant.

Then it is time to clumsily navigate stairs, carry groceries, or wait for someone to give up their seat on the bus.

One politician struggles to put on socks, while another wipes sweat from his brow after hanging a load of laundry, as an upbeat tune plays in the background.

“I can see how hard it is to be carrying a child and do house chores,” says 52-year-old Shunji Kono, the governor of Miyazaki prefecture.

“I think I have to be much kinder,” the father of three adds in the video.

Suspending New Electricity Tariff Will Lead To Darkness- DISCO

The umbrella body of the 11 electricity distribution companies (discos), Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), yesterday reacted to the directive from the Senate ‘suspending’ the new electricity tariff.

The association warned that suspending the implementation of the tariff would leave the country in continued darkness, with diminished and no future prospects of growth of the economy.

Besides, the discos said the new tariff would guarantee adequate investments in the sector, which would ultimately lead to a reduction in tariff in the future.

Meanwhile, Executive Director, Advocacy and Research of the association, Mr. Sunday Oduntan, in a statement yesterday, also cautioned that the absence of a market priced tariff would create the possibility of performance failure by the operators.

The statement said: “The Senate on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 passed a resolution directing the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to suspend the recently-implemented electricity tariff (MYTO-2015).

“However, implementation of this resolution is not without consequences and the following are a few of them. A market priced tariff is a fundamental requirement under the agreements signed between distribution company (disco) operators in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), raising the concern for sanctity of contract.

“Such a failure will be at a price that the government can ill-afford in these times of die economic challenges.”

Pastors Adeboye, Bakare To Lead Over 300 Clerics For Hannah Awolowo Burial

The family of late Hannah Awolowo on Thursday released her burial arrangements, disclosing that over 5,000 guests would attend the funeral at the Ikenne hometown of the deceased.

The burial committee chairperson, Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, made this known at a press conference held at the family home in preparation for the burial scheduled to hold between November 15 and 25.

Accompanied by her elder sister, Tola Oyediran, and other members of the burial committee, the chairperson said that arrangements for the event were in top gear.

She listed priority areas as security, transportation, church service, medical services.

She also disclosed that, Pastors Adejare Adeboye of Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, and Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly, as well as 60 Anglican Bishops, 300 Priests, would be among several ministers of God who would participate in the two-week burial programme.

?The daughter of the deceased, who is a former Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands, said that since Our Saviour Anglican Church, where the service would hold has capacity for 619 people, large television screens would be provided around the church and Awolowo Square for guests.
?The committee gave the programme of events as follows:
November 15 at 12 pm: Lying-in-state at Park Lane, Apapa, Lagos, followed by Christian interdenominational service.

November 16: Body would depart to Ibadan and lying-in-state at Oke Bola, Ibadan.

November 17-24: Lying-in-state at Ikenne, home town of the Awolowos.
The organising committee noted that there would not be vehicular movement in and out of the town on the last day of the programme, adding that many musicians, including Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey, as well as Adewale Ayuba, Funmi Aragbaye and Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, would be on the bandstand.

?The Ogun State Government on its part said it has invited all the 35 state governors to be guests at the burial, adding that special fanfare would be organized for the celebration of the late matriarch at Sagamu stadium of November 23.

Chad, Cameroun, Others Adopt Buhari’s Proposal For Nigeria To Lead Boko Haram War

An extraordinary meeting of Heads and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Benin has approved that Nigeria retains the position of the force commander in the war against Boko Haram until the end of the mission.

It also approved that the slot of the deputy force commander and chief of staff be rotated between Cameroun and Chad every twelve months.

Their decision followed an earlier rejection of a rotational six-month tenure of the Multi-National Joint Task Force’s Commander, by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr. Buhari suggested instead that Nigeria heads the force for the period of the war against the insurgents since it was providing the bulk of troops.

Mr. Buhari had earlier argued that such a process will undermine the military’s capacity to sustain the push against the insurgents “who also have the uncanny ability to adapt and rejig their operational strategies”.

“This command will be to the effectiveness of military strategy, since Nigeria will be providing the bulk of the troops and the main theatre of the war is on Nigerian soil,” he said.

Cleric Advises Buhari To Lead Nigeria With Fear Of God

President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders have been urged to imbibe the fear of God in leading Nigeria.

Dr Jerry Modibbo, President of Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ (ERCC), gave the advice during interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on Friday.

He said the advice had become imperative for unity and lasting peace among the diverse ethnic, religious and political groups in the country. “Our role is to preach peace and unity and to advise our members and other Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliations. “No society can develop in an atmosphere of rancour and confusion.

“The security challenges facing our state and some parts of the country have affected our lives and socio-economic development negatively.

“I appeal to our president, Buhari and other leaders to lead Nigerians righteously and with the fear of God in the interest of peace and national development.

“If Buhari and others lead with the fear of God, this would go a long way toward uniting Nigerians as well as taking the country to greater height.”

According to him, if the new administration leads Nigeria with the fear of God, it will foster unity and peace and promote socio-economic development. Modibbo urged Nigerian leaders to live exemplary lives and shun evil acts. He also called on Nigerians to intensify prayers for president Buhari and others to enable them to succeed in fighting poverty, unemployment and other social vices.

The ERCC president congratulated Buhari for his successful inauguration and urged him to fulfil campaign promises by tackling corruption, unemployment and insecurity. He urged youths to be law-abiding and respect constituted authority in addition to embracing peace.
