Ash Wednesday: Cleric urges Christians to be peaceful, loving

A cleric, Rev. Fr. Philip Jamang, has urged Christians to be peaceful and loving throughout the lent season, as Catholics and other orthodox churches all over the world mark the Ash Wednesday.

Jamang, who is the Parish Priest, Church of Assumption, Chongo Pyel, Jos, made the call in an interview on Wednesday in Jos.

Ash Wednesday kick starts the lent season; the 40-day prayer and fasting season. The cleric said the lent season operates on a tripod that encourages Fasting, Prayer, and Alms Giving.

He said Christians must use the lent period to imitate Christ by showing undiluted love and kindness to those in need.

He also urged Christians to remain peaceful in all their dealings and at all times. “It is fitting for Christians to imitate Christ during this 40-day fasting and prayer.

“Jesus used this period to show his supernatural love for mankind, and so we are oblige to do same to one another devoid of religious differences.

“Jesus during his fasting period showed how peaceful he is, and that was why even in the face of serious challenges, he remained peaceful “As much as Christians are facing series of challenges today, I still want to urge us to be peaceful and kind to our fellow Christians and Muslims alike.

“We must eschew violence and embrace peace, for most of these challenges are man made, and certainly, God will bring succour soon, ” he assured.

The cleric further admonished Christians to reach out to the needy in the society, so as to make them have a feel of the dignity of life.

Muslim Cleric Stabs Lagos Landlord to Death

An Islamic cleric, Alfa Ganiyu Umaru, is being detained by the police for allegedly killing his landlord in one-storeyed building in Agbotikuyo bus stop, Ipaja, Lagos State.

This is just as relatives and friends of the 45-year-old victim, Tajudeen Popoola, said they had yet to come to terms with the reality of his death.

It was learnt that Umaru, who hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, and Tajudeen had been at loggerheads for some time over Umaru’s alleged immoral behaviour

He was said to have criticised the cleric for drinking and performing rituals on the ground that such acts contravened Islamic doctrines. It was said the criticism usually resulted in exchange of words between both.

The matter, however, came to a head when Tajudeen returned from a football viewing centre around 8pm on Sunday and reportedly met Umaru and his friends drinking alcohol in front of the building.

The landlord was said to have rebuked the suspect, leading to an altercation after which they both retired to their respective apartments.

The deceased’s brother, Azeez Popoola, said Umaru came to Tajudeen’s apartment a few minutes later and attacked him with a shard of broken glass.

He said, “Alfa usually quarreled with my brother because he used to correct his excesses. Any time they had a disagreement, he would threaten to kill my brother. On Sunday, he made good his threat.

“Everywhere was dark that evening. He sneaked into the passage where my brother was resting on a bench. Alfa didn’t know I was resting at a corner in the passage. I suddenly heard my brother scream and before I knew what was happening, blood was gushing out from his neck while Alfa fled.

“I went after him and with the help of neighbours, he was apprehended and the shard was recovered from him. We rushed my brother to the Ile Epo General Hospital; but before we got there, he had lost a lot of blood. He died a few minutes later. Alfa stabbed him in three different places in the neck.”

Azeez, who described Tajudeen as a diligent mechanic, said he had never fought the suspect although the cleric owed him two-year rent.

“He is a widower. His only daughter lives in the East. The daughter and our ageing mother had not been informed of his death,” he added.

Our correspondent, who visited the residence on Tuesday, found bloodstains on the staircase and walls, while Umaru’s paraphernalia, including a horn and a black pot, was seen at the entrance to his apartment.

It was gathered that his wife and children had fled immediately the incident happened.

Tajudeen’s friend, David Aluko, said, “I am devastated. I can’t still believe that my friend is gone forever. The whole thing still appears to me as a movie. We both returned from the viewing centre that day and he told Alfa to stop drinking outside the building.

“Alfa said Tajudeen’s comment embarrassed him and he threatened to kill the landlord. I was discussing with people outside when I heard Azeez shouting upstairs that Alfa had stabbed his brother. Tajudeen was kind to everybody.”

A tenant, who identified himself only as Quadri, said Tajudeen was generous to him and other tenants, urging the police to ensure that Umaru faced the full weight of the law.

“I live in his house in Dopemu. The last time I paid rent was 2014. I explained my challenges to him and he said I shouldn’t worry. He helped people a lot. There were occasions he gave tenants money from the rent they paid,” he added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, had yet to reply to a text message sent to her mobile phone line as of press time.

However, a police source told our correspondent that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

If Buhari fails, we’ve all failed – Cleric

Supreme Head of Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, Dr. Solomon Alao, has said if President Muhammadu Buhari is to succeed with his economic reforms, the support of Nigerians are needed.

Alao, who is fondly called Baba Aladura, called on Nigerians to unite and pray for Buhari’s success.

The prophet made this call when he delivered a keynote address at the 91st Seraphim Day anniversary with the theme “I Have Set the Lord Always Before Me” held at Seraphim Land on Kilometre 40, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.

“Buhari needs our collective prayers.

“If he fails, we have all failed, but, if he succeeds and the economy becomes buoyant, we will all reap the benefits.

“So, there is the need for all of us to cooperate with him for our own benefit,” he said.

The cleric also advised Nigerians to patronise locally-made goods in order to strengthen the naira and urged political leaders to think inwards.

He said government must go back to the drawing board and learn from the country’s founding fathers, who, despite religious and tribal sentiments, enthroned peace and economic stability in the regions in the First Republic.

Alao said Nigeria is destined for greatness and stressed that Nigerians must change their present attitude of deep-rooted tribalistic sentiments as well as religious intolerance as witnessed in some parts of the country for the country.

Baba Aladura explained that God is the only way out of Nigeria’s predicament, adding that Nigerians must strive to stand on the path of truth, respect for human dignity and love towards fellow human being.

He also tasked Christians all over the country to shun corruption, especially members of the C&S Unification of Nigeria.

The cleric threatened that any member of the church found to have corruptly enriched himself/herself would be ostracised from the church.

He added that members must shun all forms of profane acts, adding that all sacrifices are fetish and against the liturgy of the church.

While enjoining all members to be fully involved in the development of the Moses Orimolade University, Omuaran, Alao urged all members of Cherubim & Seraphim family worldwide to come together in unity. According to him, the unity of the Church remains a crucial cause that must be pursued tirelessly.

Muslim Cleric Arrested In Pakistan For Inciting Teenager To Saw Off Hand

A Muslim cleric has been arrested in Pakistan on terror charges after a teenage boy he accused of blasphemy responded by sawing off his own hand.
Anwar Ali, 15, performed the act of self-amputation with a scythe after attending a religious gathering in his local mosque last Monday.
Shabir Ahmed challenged anyone who did not love the prophet Muhammad, the most revered figure in Islam, to raise their hand. The boy misunderstood the question and put his hand up, prompting a chorus of shouts from those attending the Milad, a traditional event where songs and poems praising Muhammad are performed.
Ahmed, the cleric at the mosque in the small Punjab town of Hujra Shah Muqeem, reportedly
denounced the boy as a “blasphemer who was liable to be killed”.

Nausher Ahmed, a police officer, said an emotional Ali rushed home and returned with his severed hand on a plate, which he presented to the mullah.

The police registered a case against the cleric on Friday, five days after the incident, after coverage of the case in local newspapers. Police said they had been unable to take immediate action as no one had lodged a complaint.

However a town resident Sajid Ali said the mullah had been arrested and was later released after pressure from other clerics. He said the boy had been given only rudimentary medical care at a clinic where his wound was bandaged.
Sajid Ali said:

“The mullah has no right to exploit the emotions of Muslims and test their love for the prophet. The environment at the Milad put him under such deep pressure that he was forced to take this step.”

The boy, said he had no regrets. “What I did was in love for prophet Muhammad,” he said. His father, Muhammad Ghafoor, said he was proud of his son.

The cleric was arrested under counter-terrorism legislation designed to prevent incitement to violence. Disrespect for Islam is an extremely sensitive issue in Pakistan where people who have killed to protect the honour of the religion are folk heroes.

Blasphemy is a capital offence under Islamic laws that are routinely condemned by human rights groups who say false accusations are often levelled against religious minorities or by people embroiled in personal disputes.

European Union Raises ‘Concerns’ Over Saudi’s Execution Of Shiite Cleric

The European Union on Saturday raised serious concerns over Saudi Arabia’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, warning it could have “dangerous consequences” for a region already fraught with sectarian tensions.

“The specific case of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr raises serious concerns regarding freedom of expression and the respect of basic civil and political rights, to be safeguarded in all cases, also in the framework of the fight against terrorism,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement.

“This case has also the potential of enflaming further the sectarian tensions that already bring so much damage to the entire region, with dangerous consequences,” she said.

One of 47 people executed in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, the 56-year-old cleric was a charismatic religious leader who delivered fiery speeches demanding more rights for his minority in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.

He was one of driving forces between protests that broke out in 2011 in the kingdom’s east, and his execution sparked a furious response across the Middle East, with Iran warning Riyadh would pay a “high price”.

Among others executed were Sunnis convicted of involvement in deadly Al-Qaeda attacks, with the Saudi government saying all 47 were guilty of adopting radical ideology, joining “terrorist organisations” and implementing various “criminal plots”.

Mogherini urged the Saudi authorities “to promote reconciliation between the different communities” and called on all parties “to show restraint and responsibility”.

She reiterated the EU’s “strong opposition” to the death penalty, especially mass executions.

Cleric Advises Buhari To Lead Nigeria With Fear Of God

President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders have been urged to imbibe the fear of God in leading Nigeria.

Dr Jerry Modibbo, President of Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ (ERCC), gave the advice during interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on Friday.

He said the advice had become imperative for unity and lasting peace among the diverse ethnic, religious and political groups in the country. “Our role is to preach peace and unity and to advise our members and other Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliations. “No society can develop in an atmosphere of rancour and confusion.

“The security challenges facing our state and some parts of the country have affected our lives and socio-economic development negatively.

“I appeal to our president, Buhari and other leaders to lead Nigerians righteously and with the fear of God in the interest of peace and national development.

“If Buhari and others lead with the fear of God, this would go a long way toward uniting Nigerians as well as taking the country to greater height.”

According to him, if the new administration leads Nigeria with the fear of God, it will foster unity and peace and promote socio-economic development. Modibbo urged Nigerian leaders to live exemplary lives and shun evil acts. He also called on Nigerians to intensify prayers for president Buhari and others to enable them to succeed in fighting poverty, unemployment and other social vices.

The ERCC president congratulated Buhari for his successful inauguration and urged him to fulfil campaign promises by tackling corruption, unemployment and insecurity. He urged youths to be law-abiding and respect constituted authority in addition to embracing peace.

Cleric Urges Buhari To Be Transparent To Electorates

An Islamic cleric in Nasarawa State, Malam Ishaq Adudu, has called on the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari and other elected leaders to be transparent in the discharge of their duties. Adudu, who is the Chief Imam of Kidi Magoron Mosque in Lafia, made the call in an interview on Sunday in Lafia.

He said it was imperative for all elected leaders to ensure prudence in the management of public resources and be transparent in the discharge of their duties. “As religious leaders, our role is to preach peace and unity because no meaningful development can be achieved in any society without peace.

“Peace is priceless and non-negotiable and Nigerians must embrace peace for speedy development to be achieved.

“I also want to task our president-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and other incoming leaders on the need to be prudent and transparent in the discharge of their duties.

“Corruption, injustice, violence, among other social evils have affected the socio-economic development of the country negatively for too long; there is need for all hands to be on deck to redirect the affairs of this country.

“For Nigeria to achieve speedy development, all incoming elected leaders, political office holders, civil servants and ordinary Nigerians in general must do away with sentiments, corruption, injustice, abuse of office among others social ills.

“We must all imbibe the culture of transparency in the discharge of our duties in order to improve on the standard of living of the ordinary people.”

According to Adudu, henceforth, every public office holder will be expected to exhibit exemplery traits in the management of public resources.

He called on leaders at all levels to be fair and just in order to earn the confidence of the public, adding that people would account for their actions before God on the Day of Judgment.

The cleric urged Nigerians to pray for the new leaders to take up the task of restoring the glory of Nigeria with vigour.

He said the leaders would need God’s guidance to execute luadable projects, alleviate poverty, reduce youth restiveness and unemployment as well as boost the country’s economy.

The cleric enjoined people of the state and all Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliations, for the overall development of the country.
