Footballer killed in crocodile attack

A young Mozambican football player was snatched and killed by a crocodile while training along the banks of a river, his club said on Monday.

Estevao Alberto Gino, 19, who played for Mozambique’s second division club Atletico Mineiro de Tete, lived near the Zambezi river in the western province of Tete. The incident happened last Thursday.

“On that night, he was training and after jogging he stretched his hands into the water and that was when the crocodile caught him,” coach Eduardo Carvalho told AFP.

Crocodile attacks are common along the Zambezi river.

Local police spokesman Leonel Muchina confirmed the incident to AFP saying the footballer’s body has not yet been found.

Egypt adds ex-footballer, Mohamed Aboutrika to terror list.

Egypt has added ex-football star Mohamed Aboutrika to a terror list for his alleged links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, his lawyer says.

Mr Aboutrika is accused of financially supporting the Brotherhood, which Egypt considers a terrorist organisation.

In 2012, he endorsed the successful presidential bid by Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member.

The move by the 2008 BBC African Footballer of the Year alienated some of his fans.

Any person named on the country’s terror list is subject to a travel ban and faces having their passport and assets frozen.

Mr Aboutrika’s lawyer, Mohamed Osman, said the move was “contrary to the law”, adding that his client had “not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him”.

“We will appeal this decision,” Mr Osman said. Mr Aboutrika has strenuously denied the allegations.

A former star of Cairo’s al-Ahly club and the national team, Mr Aboutrika was dubbed The Prince of Hearts, The Magician and The Saint during his playing days.

But his decision to publicly support Mr Morsi, who lasted just one year in power, split opinion.

In 2015, he had a string of assets, including shares in a number of companies, seized by the Egyptian authorities.

The army’s crackdown on Brotherhood members, left hundreds of people dead and thousands in jail.

Mr Morsi was ousted following days of mass anti-government protests in 2013.

Mr Aboutrika, one of the most successful African footballers of his generation, retired from football in the same year.

Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt set to join Borussia Dortmund as footballer

Borussia Dortmund CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that nine-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt will join the Bundesliga side.

Bolt had earlier stated in an interview with The Guardian UK that he has, “genuinely been talking to some people,” regarding a switch from athletics to football, and later appeared on the Dortmund training ground.

The CEO of the German giants has now made it clear the 30-year-old sprinter will join the club’s training although he seems to have little chance of securing a permanent deal.

Watzke told Kicker,”It is not a joke that Bolt will train with us at some point.

“This decision was made a while ago. Puma chief Bjorn Gulden, who is also part of our board of directors, told me some time ago that Usain had asked him if he could train with us sometime.

“I immediately said that was not a problem and the coach [Thomas Tuchel] is okay with it as well.

“It will obviously not happen when we have two games in one week, but probably when things are a bit more quiet. The team will like it as well.

Watzke however, dismissed any suggestion that Bolt could soon be walking out on Signal Iduna Park as part of Tuchel’s squad.

He added, “We do not have to talk about us offering him a contract.

“But we feel flattered that he wants to train with us. It is an honour.”

The Jamaican sprinter will go down as one of the all-time great Olympians having claimed nine gold medals across three Games in 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.

Argentine Player Shoots Referee Dead & Injures Another Player After He Was Given Red Card

An amateur football match was marred by violence after a player shot and killed a referee and also injured another player after he was given a red card. The match took place on Sunday in the Campo de la Ribera area of Cordoboa, Argentina. The referee, Cesar Flores, 48, was killed after being shot three times – once in the head, neck and chest, according to police.

According to the report bt MirrorSport, Police say referee Cesar Flores, 48, showed the assailant a red card for making a heavy tackle on an opponent. The player, who is at large, then retrieved a gun from his bag and shot Flores three times. He also wounded another player, 25-year-old Walter Zarate, before fleeing the scene.

Walter Zarate, was taken to hospital, though he is not in critical condition.

“It all happened during the match,” a police spokesman said. “We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”

The shooting appears to have taken place during an amateur game that the Argentina’s Football Federation might not have organized. If so, this looks like a case of social problems in the South American nation spilling onto the field of play.
