2 Shot Dead As Police Foil Easter Day Bank Robbery

Two suspected armed robbers were yesterday shot dead by policemen in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital following a failed bank robbery operation  along Melford Okilo Road, Yenagoa.

It was gathered that the four- man armed robbery gang had invaded the Stanbic IBTC Bank along Melford Okilo Road at about 11.30 pm with a dynamite on Easter day.

An eyewitness told the reporter that unknown to the robbers, the policemen on duty had sighted them and subsequently opened fire.

One of the armed robbers was killed on the spot while another was badly injured, while the others two escaped.

A police reinforcement team, which was dispatched to the scene, was able to apprehend one of the fleeing robbers and he was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa where he later died.

On Monday, policemen deployed to the bank stooped people from using the ATM as they were carrying out further investigations.

A reliable police source said the police are on the trail of the fleeing robbers and assured that they would be arrested.

“Yes the Police foiled a robbery attempt on another bank. One of the robbers was killed on the spot” he said.

“It was on Easter Day at about 11.30 pm when some four men came to the gate of the bank posing as people that wants to use the ATM, but on closer look, it was discovered that they had guns. It was then the police man on duty immediately alerted the patrol team. In the process the police gunned down one of the robbers and wounded another one.

Troops Foil Boko Haram Attack On IDP Camp, Kill 26

Military troops have killed 26 suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram sect in an attempted failed attack on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno state. The IDP camp in Dikwa with a population of over 40,000 refugees has witnessed series of attacks by insurgents recently. Unfortunately, sources said, a soldier, civilian JTF member and some IDP members also lost their lives in the fresh encounter that took place in the early hours of Wednesday.

In an email message to our Correspondent, Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman said, “Following dislodgement of Boko Haram terrorists camps in the border towns of Kumshe and Talala by joint operations of Nigerian and Cameroonian forces, the terrorists made a futile attempt on Dikwa early today. Col. Usman said, from all indications, the terrorists aimed at causing havoc at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp located at Dikwa. Troops Foil Female Suicide Bombers’ Plan In Borno State

Nigerian troops and the Borno Youths Empowerment, otherwise known as Civilian JTF on Wednesday foiled planned attacks by four suicide bombers in the outskirt of Maiduguri.

A military source said at about 7.30am four female suicide bombers were intercepted by troops and the Civilian JTF, ahead of a checkpoint about 25km away from Maiduguri the capital of Borno State.

A spokesman for the military, Colonel Sani Usman, said preliminary investigation revealed that the suicide bombers were earlier observed trying to bypass a military checkpoint through a close by village before they were ordered to take the right road.

Few metres to the checkpoint, however, one of the bombers swiftly detonated her vest while the troops gunned down the other three suicide bombers before they could detonate their explosives.

Colonel Usman said one of the Civilian JTF died while four other persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

“The Nigeria Police Explosive Ordinance Device team in the area safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Device carried by the other suicide bombers,” he further stated.

Troops Kill 30 Boko Haram Insurgents, Foil Suicide Attack In Borno

Over 30 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect were killed in a gun duel with Nigerian troops assisted by local vigilantes yesterday morning.

Nigerian troops with the assistance of local vigilantes had laid an ambush for the insurgents between the border villages of Kirchinga/Imirsa which came under Boko Haram attacks in recent times leading to the death of innocent residents.

A local vigilante operative who participated in the campaign told our reporter that following intelligence report about the movement of the Boko Haram insurgents, an ambush was laid which resulted in the killing of many Boko Haram members.

“Following information about the movements of the Boko Haram we got, we decided to lay an ambush in the early hours of Sunday. Our efforts yielded results as we succeeded in killing over 30 of the insurgents after a fierce gun duel.

“We confiscated many weapons from the invading terrorists, including AK 47 assault rifles, bows and arrows and other dangerous weapons,” the source said.

The onslaught against the insurgents followed increased attacks on parts of Madagali local government leading to the death of three soldiers and the abduction of one senior military officer alongside his operational vehicle.

Police Foils Attack By Unknown Gunmen in Bauchi

About 07:30am, unknown gunmen stormed Tafawa Balewa town in a convoy of eighteen Hilux vehicles and started firing sporadically in different direction.

Joint Police and local vigilante group in the town who got wind of the approaching hoodlums engaged them into a fierce gun battle which forced them abandoned four Hilux vehicles mounted with Anti aircraft machine guns and retreated back towards Bununu after sustaining heavy casualties.

However, rampaging youth in the town numbering over 3000 burnt down four corpses of the attackers and the recovered Hilux vehicles. Two empty shells of 12.7mm ammunition of AA were recovered at the scene.

Meanwhile, same hoodlums went back to Jitar village in Bauchi LGA and killed three male vigilante members of Jitar village. Police detectives attached to Township Division visited the scene and evacuated the victims to the ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi for postmortem examination. The entire surrounding has been cordoned off by combined security forces and intensive patrol is ongoing to flush out fleeing miscreants.
