Firm Plans $150 Million Power Project In Plateau

CT Cosmos Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Communication Towers Limited, has disclosed plans to establish a Solar plant power project in Panyam community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State which will cost over $150 million . Chief Operating Officer of the firm, Mr Henry Opara, who led a delegation of the company to meet with the community members at the weekend, said the project when completed will generate over 70 megawatts which he noted would be sufficient to sustain Plateau and neighbouring states. Opara said; “Presently, We have gotten the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, license, and we’ve been shortlisted for Power Purchase Agreement, PPA, with Bulk Energy Purchase Company of Nigeria; the working tools we’ve been awaiting for final take-off to the site.

Once the PPA gets to our hands we would then put a timeline on how to progress with the work, stage by stage. “Because of the high cost of the project, foreign investors are involved; and what they are just waiting for is just the paper from government, and thereafter, I believe before the end of this year, the project should have taken off. Total period for the completion and kick should not be longer than 18 months. He noted that though the Federal Government is involved in the project, it is not funding it; it is a private company initiative.

At the end of the day, the power will be directed to the National Grid and will be sold to the Federal Government. Opara said CT Cosmos has chosen a technical partner in Siemens, a leading supplier of system for power generation and transmission, and global giant in electrification, automation and digitalization for the execution of the solar photovoltaic (PV) project due to the company’s proven expertise in delivering high quality solutions, technical support and services. He said the Solar Farm, which is expected to be completed in about 18 months, will cover a land space of about 103 hectares, where the solar radiation is excellent, and will add-up to Nigeria’s efforts to generate needed power to its citizenry.

Enumerating its many benefits to the Panyam community, Opara said the over $150 million project will bring the comto the world map, provide employment opportunities to the youths that have the capacity, and will take off hazardous CO2 from the air in the community, providing healthy air for the people. The traditional ruler of the community, Mishkaham Panyam, Engineer Aminu Derwam, who was obviously delighted over the intention of the investor, took time to enlighten his subjects of the many benefits accrued to them as host community for the multi-billion naira project. Flanked by his chiefs, including a former member of House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Jonathan, the monarch said he facilitated the meeting of the company with the original land owners in the spirit of transparency so that the company could confirm to the land owners what they are paying as compensation.

Nigerian Govt. Recovers Over $14million In Unpaid Oil Royalty From This Firm

The Nigerian government has succeeded in compelling the Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited, Jide Omokore to cough out over $14m, being crude oil royalty which his company failed to remit to the federal treasury, administration insiders said.

High ranking federal officials familiar with the development told this newspaper that the funds were supposed to have been paid between 2011 and 2012 by Atlantic Energy which was, in controversial circumstances, awarded oil assets by the Goodluck Jonathan government shortly after it was incorporated in 2010.

Sources said the money was finally paid into the Federal Government’s account with JP Morgan Chase on January 29, after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission waded into the matter of recovering taxes due to the Federal Government.

“The investigation of tax defaulters in the dollar-soaked oil industry is continuing,” a source at the EFCC said Wednesday. “Those who failed to willingly pay up stand the risk of arrest and prosecution for tax fraud.”

Operatives of the EFCC had on January 27 questioned Mr. Omokore, an ally of former President Jonathan in connection with a series of multi-billion dollar crude export deals.

Mr. Omokore could not be reached for comments Wednesday. But his company recently issued a statement saying it was getting back on course after submitting its plan to settle outstanding financial commitments to the Nigerian authorities.

Collapsed Bridge: Firm Will Pay Compensation To Victims’ Families, Says Kwankwaso

Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State has vowed to ensure that the local construction firm handling the pedestrian bridge, which collapsed along Sheik Jafar road paid adequate compensation to families of the seven victims of Sunday evening incident at Dorayi suburb in the metropolis.

The state police command confirmed that no fewer than seven people were killed when the bridge collapsed, saying that ”Criminal investigation has commenced against the contractor and he would face charges if found wanting.” This was even as a man on tricycle escaped death by whiskers when the concrete slab on the collapsed foot bridge caved in and broke the rickshaw into two yesterday.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya, spoke on the incident in an interview with newsmen in Kano. However, the governor’s position was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Press in the Government House, Halilu Dantiye. “Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso has vowed to ensure that the victims and their families are adequately compensated by the company,” Dantiye said adding that “doing so will avoid a lot of of unnecessary consequences.”

The statement further admonished citizens to be patient and continue to be law abiding. The statement further urged companies undertaking numerous construction work in the state to continue doing their work in a manner that would ensure minimum discomfort to road users. The governor, who condoled with the families of the victims also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured ones who are currently in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Majiya said the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. when the bridge, which was still under construction, caved in and collapsed on a car passing underneath it. “The workers at the site had warned motorists not to pass because they were working on the bridge but the driver of the taxi allegedly ignored the warning.

‘’So, the moment he moved; before he passed, the bridge caved in and collapsed on the vehicle, which led to the death of seven persons,” he said. According to him, the vehicle has since been evacuated from the scene while the corpses have been deposited at a hospital morgue.
