Man, 24, docked over alleged theft of 100 live turkeys worth N1.5m

A 24-year-old  man, Joseph Onafusi, was on Wednesday brought  before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly stealing 100 live turkeys and 40 male cockerels.

Onafusi, of an unknown address, faced a three-count charge of conspiracy, false entering and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Fatola, told the court that accused on Dec. 9, at about 2: 34 p.m., allegedly entered a house belonging to one Olufemi Fabunmi, to commit the offences.

“Onafusi, and others now at large, between February and November at about 11:30p.m., stole 100 live turkeys valued at N1.5m, property of one Mr Abiodun Ezekiel of Atere Layout, Agara, Odo Eja, Ibadan.

“The accused and his accomplice also on Dec. 3, at about 6:45 p.m., stole 40 male cockerels valued at N260,000 property of Omosola Poultry Farm of Ologede, New Garage, Ibadan,’’  said Fatola.

The offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 412 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The accused, however, pleaded guilty to the charge of false entering and pleaded not guilty to counts two and three, bordering on stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulateef Adebisi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adebisi ordered that the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused.

He adjourned the case till Jan. 6, for hearing.

Vice Chancellor Docked For Alleged N800 Million Fraud Returns Money To EFCC

The embattled Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,  Olusola Oyewole, and others accused of corruption have refunded N6.5 million to the anti-graft agency, EFCC.

Mr. Oyewole is facing criminal charges for allegedly misappropriating N800 million belonging to the university. He was charged to court alongside the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Adeseye Ogunlewe, and Bursar, Moses Ilesanmi.

The three were accused of benefitting from various illegal allowances not approved by Nigeria’s Salaries and Wages Commission.

Investigation showed that Mr. Oyewole  refunded N2.5 million on December 6 from the illegal allowances he allegedly collected to finance his daughter’s wedding. Four other staff  of the university also refunded a total of N4 million from similar illegal allowances.

A spokesperson of the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan, Ayo Oyewole, confirmed that some money was returned by suspects in the matter.

“The Commission will ensure that everybody who benefited from the illegal allowances return whatever they collected to the coffers of the university,” he said.

The monies returned so far are, however, a far cry from the N800 million that the EFCC says Mr. Oyewole and others mismanaged.

The university’s spokesperson, Emi Alawode, declined comment saying the matter was already in court.

Man docked over alleged theft of 4 bags of cement

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Bona Glory, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 25, around 10:00 a.m. at Olorunsogo Area, off Ogunofeke, Modakeke, in the Ife North-East local government area of Osun.

Glory said that the accused entered into the house of one Lawal Abass to commit felony by stealing his four bags of cement, with a total value of N10, 000.

He added that the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 390 (9) and 411 of the Criminal Code, Cap at of 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Abiodun Akindipe, applied for the bail of his client in most Liberal terms, saying that the offence was a bailable one, and pledged that the accused would not jump bail.

Magistrate Bose Awosan admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N5, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Awosan added that the surety must swear to an affidavit of means, be a relation of the accused, as well as provide two recent passport photographs of himself and that of the accused.

She adjourned the case till Dec. 21, for hearing. (NAN)

Woman docked for alleged theft of N60,000.

A 36-year-old woman, Abosede Oloyede, was on Friday arraigned in Osogbo over alleged theft.

Oloyede is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and theft at an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court.

The Prosecutor, SP Mireti Wilson, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 28, at about 12 p.m., at Omo West area, Osogbo.

Wilson said the accused conspired with others now at large to steal the sum of N60,000 from one Mrs Omotosho under the pretext of assisting her to secure employment at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.

He said that the accused failed to secure the employment for the complainant and also refused to refund the money collected from her.

The offences contravened sections 516, 419 and 390(9) of the criminal code cap 34vol.11laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Henry Odunayo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mrs Habibatu Bashiru, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties in the like sum.

Bashiru said the sureties must reside within the court jurisdiction with evidence of tax payments and two passport size photographs, attached with an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned to Jan. 6, 2017, for mentioned.

Man Docked Over Abduction Of Teenage Girl In Lagos

A 36-year-old man, Ezechi Uwazie who allegedly abducted a 17-year-old girl, has appeared before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused is facing a two-count charge of abduction and fraud.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large at Suru-Alaba in Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos on Aug.19 at 12.00 p.m.

According to him, the accused walked up to the girl and presented himself as an importer, who is in search of the place where his goods are kept.

“The girl, who was sent to the bank by her boss, described how he can get to Cele Bus Stop in Okota, Lagos.

“The man insisted that she should take him to the place claiming that he was new in Lagos.

“Suddenly, a man, who is also an accomplice, came to meet the girl, pretending that he did not know the man, suggested that they should accompany the man to the place.

“The girl became unconscious and accepted the offer and they boarded a bus heading to Cele Bus Stop.

“When they alighted from the bus, they told the girl that they should take a bus heading to Ejigbo, but the girl insisted that she cannot help again.

“When they were at Cele Bus Stop, a man, who noticed that something was fishy, went to a nearby police station to report,’’ Okoliko said.

“In the course of the argument, the accomplice pretending to be a Good Samaritan saw the man coming with a policeman and absconded.

“The `fake importer’ was immediately arrested.’’

The offences contravened Sections 141 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs. M.I. Dan-Oni, granted the accused bail in the sum of 200,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

Alleged False Assets Declaration: Saraki Docked Before CCT

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has been docked and trial is expected to commence before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on a 13 count charge of alleged false assets declaration.

 The Supreme Court, through its judgment delivered on February 5, 2016, had paved way for the trial to begin after dismissing the Senate President’s objection to the validity of the charges and the jurisdiction of the CCT to hear the case.

The Danladi Umar-led tribunal subsequently fixed Thursday for the commencement of the trial, but it later shifted the date to Friday, following a request by Dr. Saraki’s new lead counsel, Mr Kanu Agabi (SAN).

In the charges instituted by the Federal Government, Dr. Saraki was accused of making false assets declaration in his forms submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau as a two-term Governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2011.

Civil Servant Docked Over Alleged Assault

A 49- year-old civil servant, Abraham Omoniyi was on Thursday arraigned before an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault on one Rahman Oladele.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Ayodeji Omoyeigha told the court that the accused on Jan. 23 at Sarajoe Street, Okitipupa slapped Oladele in his office.

He said that the accused also used a knife to threaten Oladele while he was performing his official duty.

The prosecutor said that the offence was contrary to Section 351, Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State 2006.

The accused, of no fixed address, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.

The Magistrate, Mr. Chris Ojuola granted the accused bail in the sum of N30, 000 with a surety in like sum and adjourned the case till March.1 for further hearing.

Ojuola said that the surety must present one year tax clearance.

Businessman Docked For Allegedly Forging CBN Document

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 33-year old businessman, Bakare Suleiman, at a Kado Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja, for alleged forgery.

The prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, told the court that the accused, who resided in Gwako village, Gwagwalada, Abuja, was facing a two-count charge of forgery and cheating.

Obatomi said that one Jimoh Oladunjuye of new Nyanya, Nassarawa state, reported the case at Utako Police Station on Oct. 10, 2015.

She said that the accused had approached the complainant at Jabi Motor Park and falsely presented a forged Central Bank of Nigeria document that showed items for auctioning.

She alleged that the accused fraudulently collected the sum of N560, 000 from the complainant to procure a Toyota Hiace bus, which he claimed had been awarded to him by CBN from the disposable items.

The prosecutor, however, stated that the accused neither provided the bus nor refunded the N560,000 to the complainant.
She said that the offence contravened Sections 366 and 322 of the Penal Code law.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Judge, Mallam Abubakar Sadiq, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum. Sadiq adjourned the matter till April 7.

Fake 58 Year Old Police Woman Docked For Impersonation

A 58-year-old woman, Adetolani Afoke, who allegedly wore the uniform of a deputy superintendent of police,(DSP) with an intent to impersonate, was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos.

The accused, who resides at 13, Bamgboye St., Orilowo -Ejigbo, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge bordering on impersonation and possession of stolen property before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
She, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Simon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 25 at the Bolade-Oshodi axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos.

He said the accused was arrested by members of a police patrol team that had stopped the Volkswagen commercial bus loaded with building materials that she chaperoned.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused had accompanied the bus- driver under the guise of being a senior police officer.
“Afoke wore the complete uniform of a DSP and also had in her possession a forged identity card.
“My lord, there is no record of the accused as ever being enlisted as a member of the Nigeria Police, ” Imhonwa said.

The prosecutor said that investigations revealed that the accused was once a traffic warden attached to Area C Command, Surulere, Lagos State, but had since deserted her job.

“Afoke was a traffic warden, who is now a deserter, but wears a police uniform with the intent to deceive innocent citizens that she has authority to act in such a capacity”, Imhonwa said.

Woman Docked For Stealing Grinding Machine

A 38-year-old woman, Mary Irabor, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin for stealing a grinding machine.

The Prosecutor, ASP Sylvester Omor, said that the accused along with others now at large, committed the offence on Aug. 22, at No. 741 East Circular road, Benin.

Omor told the court that the grinding machine that was valued at N35,000 , was the property of one Janet Iria.

He said that the accused also obtained credit facility of N120, 480 under false pretext from one Evelyn Edobor.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 516, 419 (1) (a) and 390 (4) (a) of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. ll laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs C.A. Nwoha, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 and a surety in like sum.

Nwoha adjourned the case till Nov. 27 for hearing.

Falae Identifies Kidnappers, 5 Docked

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, who was kidnapped by Fulani herdsmen on his 77th birthday and released after paying N5m ransom four days after, has identified his abductors who were paraded before him by the police.

Falae on Tuesday, identified three of the suspects as those who kidnapped him and threatened to kill him if he failed to pay the ransom. Chief Falae, according to a police source, also identified one of the kidnappers who was kind to him.

This came as the Police, Wednesday evening, recovered N137m from robbers who raided a new generation bank on Trans-Amadi Road in Port Harcourt.

Saraki Refuses To Mount Dock At CCT

 The trial of the Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja,commenced on a dramatic note this morning, with the accused person, refusing to mount the dock.

The trial tribunal, headed by Justice Danladi Umar, called up Saraki’s case at exactly 10:32am.

Following Saraki’s refusal to stand up as his case was mentioned, the tribunal Chairman, Justice Umar, demanded that he should leave his seat and enter inside the dock.

The Senate President who is currently sandwiched by his colleagues and friends inside the court, called the bluff of the tribunal by retaining his seat.

“Where is the prosecution, is the accused person here?”, Justice Umar who was looking directly at Saraki from his vantage post, queried.

“Mr lord I cannot see him. I think the first thing is for him to enter the dock first, then we will announce our appearances. After which the charge will be read to him”, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs submitted.

“With profound respect to the chairman and member of this tribunal, I agree with my learned brother that we should enter appearances first. The order of this tribunal was that the accused should be produced today. It was not for his to enter his plea. The case was earlier adjourned for mention”, counsel to Saraki, Mr. J.B. Daudu, insisted.
